THE LOWEDOWN
THE support that the Green Army gave us last week at Crewe was nothing short of amazing, and the win was for everyone who travelled to the game and for backing us in such numbers. We played the football, and scored three very good goals, but they rallied behind us, and all the staff and players were pleased that we were able dedicate the win to them. We knew all about the fan-base before we came here, and now that we have experienced it in a league game on the road for the first time, we are looking forward to tasting it at Home Park for the first time this afternoon. Long may it continue.
and link-up play was very good, too. His attitude has been spot on since I arrived – he was one who wanted to put things right from last season. I was pleased with the goals and pleased with the clean sheet but there are still plenty of things we can work at. The standards are high and they will get higher, because I demand it, but we have only been together for five or six weeks and I could not have asked for a better start. We will take each game as it comes and keep ticking the matches off. We will look at where we are after the first 15 games, then the next 15, and so on. We need to make Home Park our fortress and, with the support of the Green Army, that will be our aim.
It was good to get off to an opening-day win but we are not getting carried away. We will have bumps in the road during the season, because you cannot beat everybody 3-0, but we are all happy to have got off to a good start.
We will respect all our opponents, including today’s visitors Colchester United, who we welcome to Home Park. John McGreal is a fellow Scouser who has had Colchester playing very well for a number of seasons.
Fadz’s desire and commitment to get up the pitch in the 94th minute for his second goal showed what he wants to do for the team, the badge, for me and for his team-mates. That is the type of character he is and hopefully he can get a few more goals this season.
They were one of the best teams that we faced with Bury last season and were very unlucky to finish just outside the play-off places, playing some very good stuff. They pose a real threat and we will need you behind us all the way today.
Joel’s goal was very good and his hold-up play

AMERICAN EYE
Nearly 400 years ago, the original Pilgrims embarked on an overseas tour that saw a massive result for the world. In celebration of the city of Plymouth’s historical ties with the United States of America, we look at some football connections between the club and the country.
9
BEFORE the MLS, there was the NASL. The North American Soccer League began life in the USA and Canada in 1968 and flourished under the guidance of former Welsh international Phil Woosnam – cousin of golfer Ian –for the best part of two decades. Woosnam oversaw a massive expansion in interest from fans and TV companies alike that peaked in the mid to late 1970s, not least of all because of the emergence of a New York Cosmos side that hoovered up some of the world's best players, including Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto. Other international stars, albeit ones on the wane and seeking a final lucrative pay-day, who were attracted to what became a 20-team league included Giorgio Chinaglia, Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Gerd Müller, George Best and Rodney Marsh. A large number of lesser-known British-based players joined the influx of foreign talent, some for a brief spell, many looking to cash in the tail end of their career. Midfielder Brian Bason had a spell at Vancouver Whitecaps in between his time at first club Chelsea and joining the Pilgrims in 1977. Born in Epsom in 1955, Brian was teenage star with the Blues who used his time in the NASL – playing under ex-Argyle manager Tony Waiters – to rehabilitate from a double leg fracture that threatened to end his career.
A Stamford Bridge contemporary of Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins, he served his apprenticeship while cleaning the boots of Peter Osgood, Ron Harris, Peter Bonetti, Bobby Tambling and the like. After breaking his leg in a challenge with Arsenal’s Sammy Nelson, Brian was loaned to Vancouver to regain fitness and confidence. He played 14 times for the Canadian franchise, scoring three goals and assisting another three, as the Caps finished second in their league, the Pacific Conference, Western Division, before losing the divisional championship to a Seattle Sounders team that included Harry Redknapp and ex-Pilgrim Mickey Cave. One of Brian’s team-mates on the Vancouver playing roster was Gordon Taylor, the current and long-term chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, who was then a tricky winger contributing nine assists in his 16-game spell. Brian joined Argyle on his return from the States and went on to play 149 times for the Pilgrims, bossing the midfield with some tough tackling and his range of excellent passing. He was also known for having a fierce right-foot shot, and more than a few of his 11 goals were strikes from distance. After brief post-Home Park spells at Portsmouth and Reading, Brian managed an hotel in Truro and then ran several pubs in the Home Counties before moving to Daventry to work as a sales rep. He now lives in Brittany.

Review ARGYLE ended the first Saturday of the new campaign as leaders of Sky Bet League Two but were a distant third in terms of media attention, behind the two clubs promoted from the National League last season. Salford City beat Stevenage 2-0 in their first-ever EFL match. Emmanuel Dieseruvwe's historic double gave his side, who visit Home Park in ten days' time, a winning start. Leyton Orient – Tuesday visitors to the Theatre of Dreams in the Carabao Cup – marked their return to the EFL with a 1-0 victory against Cheltenham Town. Late manager Justin Edinburgh's last signing Josh Wright scored the only goal of the emotional game, which saw Cheltenham's Luke Varney and Rohan Ince sent off in the second half. Mansfield Town came back from a two-goal deficit at half-time to secure a 2-2 draw with Newport County despite finishing the game with 10 men after Jacob Mellis' red card. Joss Labadie put Newport ahead before Padraig Amond scored from the penalty spot to double his side's lead, but Mansfield struck back in the second half with early goals from Krystian Pearce and Danny Rose. Grimsby Town scored two second-half goals in a

Carlisle United held on to record a 2-1 win over 10-man Crawley Town. Harry McKirdy put Carlisle ahead in the sixth minute, Beryly Lubala equalised, and Stefan Scougall restored the lead for Carlisle before Lewis Young was dismissed for Crawley. Today's visitors Colchester United secured a point in a 1-1 draw with Port Vale, who have not lost on the first day of the season since 2004. They took the lead in the fifth minute through Tom Pope's penalty before Luke Norris struck back for Colchester. Walsall got off to a winning start under new manager Darrell Clarke, with James Clarke scoring in his side's 1-0 win at Northampton Town. Forest Green Rovers got off to a winning start, with substitute Taylor Allen firing in the only goal of the game to give his side a 1-0 home victory over Oldham Athletic. Ryan Bowman secured all three points for Exeter City with a lucky 88th-minute strike as they ground out a 1-0 home win over Macclesfield Town. Relegated Bradford City were held to a goalless draw by Cambridge United, who had Liam O'Neil dismissed.
ELSEWHERE... FORMER Argyle Young Player of the Season Ben Purrington scored for the second game in succession as Championship new boys Charlton sealed a battling 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers. Ben scored Charlton's equaliser in the Addicks' 2-1 League One play-off win over Sunderland at Wembley in May, and was back on the scoresheet at Ewood Park at the start of the new campaign.

ANDREW PARKINSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE
GOOD afternoon and a very warm welcome to everyone ahead of our first home game of the season at Home Park. It is a little over three months since we ended last season’s campaign with such a disappointing conclusion. Relegation from League One was a massive blow to everyone associated with the club. My first day in the post of CEO followed the season end and, like everyone – fans and staff alike –we had to face into this, dust ourselves down, and look at rebuilding in a way that would give us the very best opportunity to go straight back up.
Obviously the key focus was on the recruitment of a new manager and his backroom team, and, whilst the process was more diff icult and took longer than we expected, I am a great believer in sticking with what you believe is the right path, and dealing with the challenges you may face, to get to the right end. We were delighted when our perseverance led to the appointment of Ryan, Steven, and other key members to the f irstteam coaching staff. Since their arrival and that of a number of new players, there has been a very positive feeling around the club. This has also been noticeable off the pitch, among the fans that attended the two forums held during the summer and with an attendance of over 1,000 at the open training session recently.
Design Branding & Illustration
There has been a huge amount of activity within the club, too. The Mayflower Grandstand remains on course to be completed during the last quarter of this year, in time for the city’s Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020. Those of you who have not been up to Home Park during the summer will see how advanced this exciting development is. Its completion will allow us to have a capacity of more than 18,000 fans and, more than this, will be critical in our ambition to bring financial sustainability to the club. Being able to host conferences and events for up to 500 people on non-match days will bring much-needed revenue to the club, as will the hospitality packages that we will offer on match-day. There has been a terrific response to the launch of the season-tickets for the new season. We thank everyone who has purchased these and realise the commitment in advance that people are making, which is so important to the club and its stability. The club will be striving to have a bigger presence within the community and city. Over the last couple of months, we have seen the opening of the Manadon Sports Hub and community centre and our first Day of Action at Home Park. Large number of fans and club staff gave their time to embark on a number of important activities to ensure the stadium would look its very best for the start of the season. Thank you to all who attended. Whilst we are all looking forward to the first-team fortunes, it is also a season of promise and excitement for our Ladies team, who we will hope to see at Home Park on a more regular basis this season, and, of course, our Academy youth teams. As we see the grandstand come to fruition, we will also be focussing on the fan experience, inside and outside the ground. We recognise there is much to do here and it will take some time to build across many platforms. However, we are committed to making the fan experience a more enjoyable and rewarding one. The first part to this has been the investment in a muchneeded and improved till system, which will speed up kiosk service, and enhancements to the match day food offering.
“THE CLUB WILL BE STRIVING TO HAVE A BIGGER PRESENCE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND CITY"
Lastly, we would like to welcome everyone from Colchester United who have made the long journey from Essex today. We wish you the best of the luck for the season ahead. Of course it is great to have the positive feeling around the club. However, we know that it is now down to business. We can all play our part in making this a great season for the club. I am sure it will be an exciting one. Best wishes. COYG! Andrew Parkinson

Living Legend Opens Manadon Sports Hub
ENGLAND men's all-time record appearance holder, Peter Shilton OBE, opened the new multimillion-pound sports hub in Manadon, Plymouth, recently.
14
The new facility is expected to support 30,000 people taking part in physical activity. It includes a floodlit third generation artificial grass pitch; one adult and one junior grass football pitch; a new artificial cricket wicket; eight grass wickets; and a four-team changing pavilion. The hub was made possible thanks to investment from Argyle Community Trust, Plymouth City Council, the Premier League, the FA, Football Foundation, Sport England and the England & Wales Cricket Board. Work began on the site in February 2018 after Plymouth City Council and the Argyle Community Trust netted an £880,000 grant from the Football Foundation towards the project as well as funding from Sport England and the ECB. The sports hub is based on the site of the former Ministry of Defence pitches on St Peter’s Road and is set to become an integral venue for community sport in the local area.
LEARN. PLAY. SUCCEED.
Mark Lovell, Head of Community, Argyle Community Trust said: “This space is more than just a place where people play sport, but it will be a place that the community can use at its centre for education and social events. “The project is a source of huge pride now that it is open to the public. There is no doubt the Manadon Sports Hub is the largest project ever undertaken by the Trust and a reflection of the progress we have made over the past decade.
“Working in unison with Plymouth City Council and Argyle Community Trust, it is a very special moment seeing the community enjoying this fantastic facility.” The venue will be open to everybody from schools, small sided football leagues and football development to private parties, fitness classes, health and wellbeing activities as well as disability sports, Frisbee clubs and community sessions. Guests at the official opening were given an exclusive tour of the new facility and were able to see school children competing in a football tournament on the 3G pitch as well as players from Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough cricket club using the cricket nets. There was also a surprise appearance from former England footballer and Argyle legend Shilton who was delighted to be back in the city where he secured his first management job, getting Argyle into the League One play-offs in only his second season. The Manadon Sports and Community Hub will be one of the best sports facilities in the city and will see the return of many cricket teams being based and able to play within the city boundary after many dedicated spaces disappeared for the sport in Plymouth. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “This fantastic new facility has been years in the planning but absolutely worth the wait. “It’s not just somewhere to play sport – it’s been designed with the whole community in mind, with spaces for all sorts of physical, health, education and social activities that really bring people together.”
PLYMOUTH City Council, Argyle Community Trust, and CATERed have teamed up to beat holiday hunger, isolation and inactivity that children could experience during the summer holidays.
The Fit and Fed holiday programme provides meals and activities to children on free school meals in Plymouth during the summer holidays. This year, it is being funded by the Department for Education. There are more than 45 holiday clubs offering a range of different activities, from street dance to science workshops and water sports to coding.
affordable activity programmes on offer or can be at risk of going hungry because there are no free school meals. “All the children who came along really enjoyed themselves and made new friends while keeping active and eating well.” CATERed, the award-winning school meals provider, provided healthy and nutritious lunches for the children throughout the week. Freddie 10, recently took part in a session and said: “I’m so relieved about the pack lunches at the training session, I didn’t have one and was worried I wouldn’t get anything to eat but it’s free for me. The lunches are really tasty – had a wrap, lightly salted crisps, fruit, juice and a cookie!”
Jason said: “The school holidays can be a difficult time for children, whether you’re home or hanging around with your friends – a lot of the time children are spending time indoors and we wanted to encourage them to get out and play sports with their friends.
Jason Chapman added: “Fit & Fed is an excellent project and we feel proud to be working alongside Plymouth City Council and CATERed to help make this project possible and give young people a positive sporting experience during the school holidays.”
“For some families, it can be difficult to afford to feed and entertain everyone throughout the holidays, which are supposed to be a fun time of year. Children can be isolated if there are no

Back In The Day
Mike Curno has been scouring the Argyle Archives to seek out some interesting stories from the Pilgrims’ past. JACK Hill was the first signing made by manager Robert Jack after Argyle progressed from the Southern League into the new Football League Division Three (South) in 1920. Hill was a 6ft 3in tall centre-half, a coal-miner who had played for Durham City, being born six miles south of Sunderland in Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham. It was not his just his height for which Robert Jack wanted him to sign; Jack was impressed by his forward runs and the distribution of the ball to both of his wingers. Hill liked to go forward when the opportunity for him to do so allowed. We rarely know what happens when a player’s wage is discussed but, in negotiations Jack offered Hill a weekly wage of £5 and Hill asked for £6. Jack suggested that they toss a coin; they did; the manager won; and Hill became a Pilgrim. Hill played his first match for Argyle in the fourth match of the 1920-21 season, away to Crystal Palace, where his height and his red hair made him easy to find: ‘Ginger’ became his nickname.
Hill liked to go forward when he could, using his height to his advantage in attack and in defence. His distribution of the ball was superb. He was with Argyle for only three seasons, during which scouts from most of the big clubs took an interest in him. Hill made 111 appearances for Argyle and scored 10 goals before Burnley bought him in 1923 for £5,450. He had no problems playing at the higher standard and made his England debut in 1925 against a Wales, side including former Argyle team-mate Moses Russell. He was later made captain of the England team and made 11 appearances for his country, scoring three goals. He spent six seasons at Burnley, he made 184 appearances and scored 13 goals. In 1928, Hill moved to Newcastle United, an area he loved and made 74 appearances before his final move was to Third Division (North) Hull City. After promotion as a player, he became the manager but suffered relegation. He then became a scout for a while, before a job in football pool, and died in 1972, aged 75.

EMBRACE THE EXPERIENCE I HAVE just got back from a week away with some church folk. We joined 10,000 others in what is most closely described as Christian Glastonbury, with the loos and showers marginally better, but only just. Having experienced the hottest day of the year the day before, in the East of England where, at this time of year, drought is common, as we turned into the showground, it began to rain. It continued to rain. One day it did not rain and we had a tornado rip through the camp, taking a gazebo up 80 feet into the air and landing it in a tree. Our tent leaked through the roof and the floor. I think it was also coming in sideways, but I could not tell for sure. It was a beautiful feeling, driving out and crawling along the M5 on Friday evening. My own bed never felt better. Yet, I am glad I went. There were good moments – God moments, in fact – and our family became close-knit with a kind of blitz spirit. Normally in crisis, we revert to blaming each other and getting grumpy, so I was glad for this new-found togetherness. How often is it that we embrace the whole experience – good and bad – because they sort of make each other, and the good bits would not be the same without the bad? Last season, our final game against Scunthorpe United was a microcosm of the whole season. Drama, optimism, delight, anger, disbelief, pain, joy followed ultimately by bitter disappointment. What a memorable experience.
There may have been times when you sat there wondering ‘why? Why you put yourself through this, time after time. Those thoughts do not last long and even though following Argyle has its moments, I do not think I would want to take away any of them, because it is all part of the whole – and I like to embrace the whole experience. There may have been seasons when you have trundled up to Home Park wondering why you are going to put yourself through another season of trial and tribulation, but I suspect this season is not one of those.
19
The palpable sense of optimism and forwardthinking with which we began the season has only increased after the game at Crewe. However, there will be moments this season, in amongst the great and the good, where things do not go well, the luck goes against us, or the magic sparkle disappears. Every season has them in some measure – sometimes more, sometimes less – but we would not want to trade them or airbrush them out would we? It’s all part of following your team – embracing the whole experience. Incidentally, an article in the newspapers this weekend reported on recent research that says that social interaction in your 50s and 60s reduces the likelihood of dementia (The Times: ‘What friends are for: socialising at 60 can stave off dementia at 70’). So heading off to Home Park every other Saturday is a mental health measure – well done, you, for looking after yourself. I often quote the many health benefits of belonging to a church, of which there are many. Now I can do the same about supporting football when I hear the familiar question ringing in my ears; ‘What – you’re going up there again? How many matches do they play?’
‘True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity, before it is entitled to the appellation.’ George Washington

Alex arrived at Home Park f rom Aberdeen Juniors in the summer of 1959 with his f riend, goalkeeper John Leiper, after being recommended by fellow Aberdonian Jimmy Gauld. He was conscripted into the Army soon after joining and it was not until the 1961-62 season that he established himself in the reserves as a f ree-scoring centre or inside-forward. Alex made just one first-team appearance, against West Ham United in the League Cup before moving to Ashford Town and then Corby Town, returning to Home Park for an FA Cup tie in 1966, which resulted in a 6-0 win for his old club. On behalf of the Green Army, the club has sent condolences to the family and friends of Alex.

HOME Park is a place so close to the heart of Sophia Curtis, a Year 7 student at pupil at Saltash.net Community School, she was moved to write a poem about the Theatre of Greens.
Can you hear the supporters shouting and cheering? Can you hear the away fans chanting and jeering?
Sophia, a keen footballer herelf and an Argyle seasonticket holder, attends home games with her uncle and papa and has been looking forward to the new season.
The big Argyle flag is passed over head, “I can see the players,” somebody said.
She says that watching the Pilgrims has inspired her to develop her skills and join a team and she plays for Saltash Youth Girls Under 12s. Here is her poem:
Everyone eagerly awaiting the whistle to blow, Mascot Pilgrim Pete entertains with his show. Are you as patient as you appear to be? Are you letting your imagination run free?
“Where’s the new manager?” people exclaim, “Where are the new players for this game?” The clock is ticking, as time like a bird quickly flies, Your patience seems endless as the tension does rise.
Home Park Do you feel lonely in silence standing there? Do you feel excited when crowd noise fills the air?
Will the game be as good as you hope? Will the fans with a poor score be able to cope?
Some days empty and all alone you stand, On match days you become obsessed with the band.
Like twinkling stars the players shine bright, We hope it will be Plymouth Argyle’s night!

Tickets for Troops WE have teamed up with services charity Tickets For Troops to provide a number of free tickets to servicemen and women, alongside their families, this season. As a part of our agreement with the charity, we will provide 25 free tickets to serving members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces for each of our 23 home Sky Bet League Two games this season. The charity was set up to provide the opportunity for troops who serve in HM Armed Forces – alongside those who have been medically discharged post-2001 – to attend events with their friends and family all over the country. As a club with a proud military heritage, as well as our Vision and Values, which underpins the club’s role as a force for good in the community, we are delighted to partner with Tickets For Troops. William Campbell-Lamerton, Director of Operations at Tickets For Troops, said: “It is fantastic to sign up Argyle as a supporter of Tickets For Troops. “Plymouth has a fantastic naval presence, and I am sure lots of our members will be heading to Home Park this season. We are both delighted and grateful for their support.” Interest in Argyle games can be registered at www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk.
Jephcott to Truro
LUKE Jephcott has joined Truro City on loan, linking up with former Argyle assistant-manager Paul Wotton, the White Tigers’ boss, at Treyew Road. Welsh under-19 international Luke is a second-year professional at Home Park and made his debut last season, when he became the first player born in the 21st century to have played for the Argyle first-team. Argyle manager Ryan Lowe has challenged Luke to use his loan move to Truro as a springboard to force his way into first-team contention at Home Park. Lowe, a striker himself in his EFL career, is keen to see Argyle’s Young Player of the Year rack up the goals that would see him rise up the pecking order for the Pilgrims. “I’ve said to Luke ‘now you need to kick on, play games, score loads of goals and give me a headache,” said Ryan. “It’s only a 28-day loan but go and score as many goals in that 28 days as you possibly can. “If you’re scoring goals and you’re my player, then why wouldn’t I be bringing him back to be a part of the first-team? Because that’s what I want.” During the early part of pre-season, Luke, who made several appearances for the Pilgrims in Sky Bet League One last season, struggled a little bit for fitness and form. Having worked intensively with the manager in the weeks that followed, though, he enjoyed a breakout game against Buckland Athletic, bagging four goals in the Greens’ 9-3 rout of the Western League club. Ryan said: “He’s shown me something different, so going out now to play some games is going to benefit him and benefit us.”
Ash Loan is ‘No-Brainer’ THE departure of Ashley Smith-Brown on a seasonlong loan to Oldham Athletic was a wise decision for all concerned. Ash made 37 appearances for the Pilgrims last season but a change of formation under new manager Ryan Lowe, and the arrival of Callum McFadzean possibly meant a step down the pecking order for the former Manchester City youngster. A move to Oldham takes Ash closer to
his home town and he will hopefully get regular game-time with the Latics in Sky Bet League Two. “I don’t want four wing-backs and I said to Ash he can stay here, no guarantee you can play and no guarantee you can’t,” said Ryan. “He has been fantastic all pre-season but Oldham had come in for a seasonlong loan; it was local for him, he is back home and playing games. “I’ve got plenty of cover [at wingback] and it was a no-brainer for both parties.”

Argyle Ladies
ARGYLE Ladies go into the new season in a positive mood and hope that, now they are based back in Plymouth at the Manadon Sports Hub, that they will have a good National League Southern Premier Division season. The Pilgrims are in the fourth year of a fiveyear plan which, according to manager Dave Leonard..."is in advance of what we are aiming for. We are now looking at the next five years."
There have been some changes at the club, with Trevor Rodd concentrating on his role as Director of Football to leave Dave Leonard in sole charge. Leonard has promoted Vicki Fannon as coach from the Development team, while Marc Bonney becomes Leonard's assistant; Jason Haswell remains as goalkeeping coach and Hannah Robertson as physio. Argyle are thankful to have secured a quality goalkeeper for the first team, with Becky Kyle returning to the club. The return to full fitness of top scorer Natasha Knapman is a huge bonus as she missed much of last season through injury. Midfielder Ellie Bishop has returned to the club and has impressed, as has 16-year-old flying winger Beth Everson, who has shown great promise. Leonard is hoping that the fans will turn out at the club's new base at the Manadon Sports Hub, saying: "I am proud to take the team there
this season and this is now our home. I want to make it a fortress." Leonard has retained many of last season's squad who finished in a highly credible midtable in the Southern Premier. Pre-season has gone well, with wins against a Royal Navy Representative team (9-1), Exeter City (8-3), Bishops Lydeard (8-0) and a Bristol City X1 (7-1). The Ladies conclude their pre-season at Poole Town tomorrow before starting their league campaign tomorrow week with a difficult visit to Crawley, who knocked them out of the League Cup last season. The following Sunday, they are away to Exeter City in the National League Cup, and their first home fixture is on Sunday, September 8, when they meet Keynsham Town, with Yeovil Town coming to Plymouth the following Sunday. So, if you want to support the girls, then head for Manadon - you will not be disappointed. The Development team, who were denied promotion because of FA rules, have to wait until Sunday, September 18 to open their account when they receive local rivals Plympton at Manadon. They have lost coach Simon Parnell, who has set up St Austell Ladies. He is replaced by Scott Robertson. Dan Tecza remains as goalkeeping coach. Argyle also have an Under 18 team that will be playing in the Devon Girls League under Gary Bottomley.

SEC’S FOOTBALL
GOOD afternoon, and welcome to our first home fixture of the season. Following last Saturday’s exceptional result, I am sure there will be a large crowd, and expectations will be high that we can continue our positive start to the season. What a summer that was! The last three months have been something of a blur and, to mark Ryan Lowe’s first competitive match at Home Park, it is worth reflecting on the appointment process of Ryan and his back-room staff. From the moment that it became public knowledge that we had a managerial vacancy, there was a deluge of enquiries from all sorts of applicants – out-of-work managers; managers’ agents; ex-players; and even one or two managers that were currently in employment with other clubs. The breadth of experience of the applicants was also surprising, from instantly recognisable exinternational managers all the way through to enthusiastic amateurs attempting to break through into the professional game. It would have been very easy to simply pick a ‘name’, make a ’phone call, and install a new manager in a relatively short space of time. The chances of getting the right person for Argyle using this method are, however, probably no better than 50/50. In order to maximize the chances of a successful outcome, Simon Hallett and the Board produced a detailed set of criteria describing what they wanted out of the new manager. The demonstrated ability to win football matches was clearly important, but so were communication skills; forwardthinking; the use of data for analysis purposes; supporter engagement; and a whole host of other soft skills. Crucially, we were able to enlist the help of some well-connected friends of the club to provide invaluable information about the personalities of the various candidates. The entire list of prospective managers, in excess of 50 at this time, were scored against the criteria and, following some lengthy debates, a long-list was produced, then a short-list, then it was time for what the media often like to refer to as a clandestine meeting in a London hotel. The interviews were held in London, but were not particularly clandestine. As I have often alluded to, regulations govern everything in football, and managerial appointments are no exception.
We were confident that all the appropriate regulations had been complied with, but some of the candidates quite rightly wished to keep their attendance at interview confidential. The interviews were held; the panel made an almost instant decision and offered the job to Ryan; and he accepted very soon afterwards. In many ways, that was the easy bit, and I will talk about the slightly more tricky following weeks in my next notes. However, we were delighted that, by following a process, we had secured a manager who seemed (and seems) to be someone who has all the attributes that the Board was looking for. Please give Ryan, Schuey, his staff and the players a huge welcome to the Theatre of Greens. Enjoy the match – it is going to be an exciting season. COYG!

GREENROOTS
There has been such a positive atmosphere around the club following our new manager’s appointment and we are all extremely privileged to be part of the club’s new dawn. Two first-year professionals – Klaidi Lolos and Adam Randell – were involved with the squad last weekend and second-year Mike Cooper has been given the chance to stake his claim for the goalkeeper’s jersey. From an Academy perspective, it is absolutely thrilling to see homegrown talent getting these opportunities. Our pre-season training went well and, once again, we have tried to formulate a variety of experiences for our players. Thank you to all the clubs that have shown us super hospitality during our pre-season fixtures. We have welcomed our new cohort of apprentices fulltime to the club. This is a challenging environment and they have worked hard, both on and off the pitch, during their first few weeks, including the completion of their induction modules. We also want to welcome back the Academy players who have represented the club at the Northern Ireland Super Cup. One of the highlights was an outstanding performance by our youngsters against an extremely physical O’Higgins side, from Chile. The opposition literally tried every trick in the book to intimidate our players, but we refused to give in. A penalty converted by Carlo Garside and a goal from Will Jenkins-Davies sealed the victory.
The meticulous planning by Academy manager Phil Stokes and our staff ensure the players have the opportunity to experience tournament football at the highest level: a five-day programme of matches, learning first-hand about rest, recovery and nutrition, and, for some players, being away from home for the first time can be a steep learning curve. Phil emphasised the benefits of participation for the players and asked that they use this experience to kick on in their personal development when they return to the Academy. The club received an email from the FA in which the Senior Referees Officer wanted to highlight the exemplary behavior of our players and staff during the game against Dundee, in which a young group of FA referees were officiating. This follows a tradition of commendations in previous years, endorsing the Academy’s professionalism in true Argyle fashion. Congratulations to all involved.
YOUTH ALLIANCE LEAGUE
Argyle 4 Oxford United 1
AFTER a tough pre-season for our young Pilgrims and a couple of heavy defeats, we placed a lot of emphasis on defensive organisation in the build-up to our Youth Alliance curtain-raiser. Our players went on and opened the season in fine style at Langsford Park, Tavistock. However, victory came at a price with our young side finishing the match with just nine men after Alfie Wotton and Ali Mansaray were dismissed, in the 26th and 65th minutes respectively. The game was an eventful one, with two penalty saves and some heroic performances, as we fielded a very young team against opponents who had a very good record in last season’s competition. We started well, taking a 15th-minute lead when Rubin Wilson combined well with Jeramiah Medine before firing a low right-footed shot past the Oxford ’keeper. Wotton’s dismissal came after he had handled the ball to deny Oxford a certain goal, but our goalkeeper, Tyler Coombes, superbly saved the resulting penalty. Our young team made the most of the situation as Jude Boyd received the ball from a quickly taken free-kick and beat three players before making it 2-0 on 36 minutes with a well-placed shot. Oxford predictably came at us after the break, but the team defended well to frustrate the visitors. However, Jerimiah Medine was bundled over in the box and Wilson calmly converted the spot-kick for a 3-0 lead on 60 minutes. Oxford were awarded another penalty, on 63 minutes. Once again, Tyler Coombes made a great diving save. Two minutes later, we were down to nine men when Mansaray lost his composure and received a red card, but our players refused to crumble as Medine showed great skills prior to making it 4-0 on 77 minutes.
THANK YOU
ON behalf of all at the Academy, I would like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to Ginsters, who have kindly sponsored the Academy this season. Welcome to our regular supporters, those of you just visiting us for the day, and new supporters joining the Green Army for the first time. Enjoy the football.

TO THE WISE
WE have been leafing through previous season’s copies of the Pilgrim matchday programme to reminisce about Argyle life in the past.
Argyle v Hull City, Barclays’ League Division Two, October 27, 1990, Cost £1 this type in today’s programme. The ‘Employment Service’ has undergone many branding changes since 1990, and now exists as JobCentre Plus.
PULL-OUT PLAYER: KENNY BROWN Kenny joined Argyle under the management of his father, and namesake, Ken, in 1988. A full-back with a tremendous engine and electrifying pace, Brown junior would go on to win the 1990-91 Player of the Season award at Home Park. He made 144 appearances for the Pilgrims, scoring four times, before moving on to West Ham United in 1991.
COVER STAR: ANDY THOMAS
ADVERTISEMENTS
Midfielder Thomas appeared on the cover of the Pilgrims’ matchday programme for the 4-1 victory over Hull City, on his 50th league appearance for the Pilgrims. It also turned out to be his last, with insurmountable injury problems cutting short a promising career for the Greens.
Outside of local advertisements from household Plymouth names (Beacon Electrical, Kevin Cooper and the Evening Herald – now, of course, Plymouth Live), major full-page advertising included an advert for Rothmans king size cigarettes – ‘the best tobacco money can buy’, and an advert on page seven for the Employment Service – promising to ‘make a job your goal this season’.
Joining in the summer of 1989, Thomas oozed class in the midfield, and, save for Tommy Tynan’s red-hot goalscoring form, he would have been in heavy contention for the Pilgrims’ Player of the Season award in 1989-90. In all competitions, Thomas made 58 appearances for Argyle, netting 22 goals, before leaving Home Park to become player-manager of nonleague Oxford City. On page three, for his manager’s column, David Kemp talked of his colleague, Pilgrim legend Gordon Nisbet, who was serving as his youth team manager at the time. “Some of you may have noticed that Gordon Nisbet scored for the reserves last weekend,” he wrote. “This 49-year-old teenager still retains all of his enthusiasm and much of his ability. Unfortunately, he has had to lay in a hot bath for the entire week in an effort to recover so that he could drive the mini-bus to today’s fixture at Weston-super-Mare!”
Tobacco advertising was outlawed in the UK in November 2002, which is why you do not see content of
A picture on page 24 shows a young Chris Twiddy, flanked by David Kemp, assistant-manager Alan Gillett and assistant youth-team manager Peter Distin, signing schoolboy terms – having impressed Gordon Nisbet while playing for the Camborne Lions. Twiddy went on to make 25 appearances for Argyle, primarily as a right winger, scoring once. After leaving Home Park in 1996, the midfielder headed abroad, playing for Sligo Rovers in Ireland. He was most successful at HamKam, a second division side in Norway, where he scored 18 goals in 45 appearances.

LIF E O F
RILEY
IT seems an age since the end of last season, with plenty having gone on at Home Park. About time then, we thought, that we caught up with defender JOE RILEY to find out how the summer has been for him and his family…which has increased by one during the break between seasons. I was absolutely delighted to become a dad. I was over the moon; it’s the best feeling in the world, as you can imagine. I’m just so glad everything went well, fitting in with the football. How delighted are you that competitive football is back? I’m buzzing with that, too, to be honest, because pre-season doesn’t really have that edge to it. Now the season has started, it’s down to the nitty gritty now and everyone is buzzing for it. How did you find pre-season? I think pre-season went alright; it was just a case of us getting used to what the gaffer wanted. I think we’ve all bought in to his way. Saying that, if you don’t want to play for him, or you don’t want to play the way he plays, then I don’t think you should be playing football at all, to be brutally honest, because its total football and it brings out the best in people.
What was the last thing you Googled?
“Pluto the dog because I wanted to prove that he looks like Ryan Law.”
Do you feel fitter now than you did 12 months ago? Yeah, I do feel fitter. This time last year was when I started having trouble with my knee. Pre-season has been a lot better because we have been doing a lot more gym work, which has been a benefit to me. I do feel a lot more powerful this season. Do you enjoy the role of right wing-back? It’s hard not to like the style that the manager plays. You want to get on the ball and dominate. Creating chances and scoring goals is what football is all about. I love wingback; I’ve played it before and really enjoyed it. Some people that have followed my career have said that right wing-back is my best position. I do enjoy it because you are obviously higher up the pitch and involved in attacking. That is especially something that I like to do. It is not that you don’t do as much defending, but the emphasis is certainly on attacking. Speaking of attacking, would you like to get a few goals this season? Yeah, that’s the aim. I don’t even think that I had a shot on target last season, so it would be nice to get some goals. Throughout my career, I have been known for getting one or two a season and I remember that being pretty special, so I can hopefully do that this season. What was your assessment of last Saturday’s win at Crewe? It was a great result for us and it gets us off to a really good start. We played some really good stuff in the first half and we can take a lot of positives from it. Crewe came into it in the second half but I think we showed a different side to us where we are able to hang on for certain spells, and Alex [Palmer] obviously helped us out with that. You are always going to come under the cosh at some point when you are away from home. Overall, I think we defended quite well but we got do with keeping the ball a bit better, especially in the second half. The fact that we now attack so much, do you feel that could be a potential flaw in the system if we lose possession so high up the pitch? Maybe but its probably our own downfall really because we kept giving the ball away. That meant that we were under pressure, but we spoke about it after the game and said that, if we have the ball, then they are not able to attack.
rAndOm Qs If you were to take on an apprentice and teach them all you know, what would you teach them? I would teach them to work hard and be on time. Timekeeping is massive for me. If you were wrongfully put into an insane asylum, how would you prove to them you were actually sane? I am a bit insane so I probably wouldn’t be able to get myself out.

Which person have you never met but feel like you know?
Probably Paul Scholes because his Instagram videos are really funny; I can't stop watching.
rAndOm Qs If you had to hide a giraffe, where would you hide it? Why would I need to hide it, though? I would probably put it in Jamie Ness’s car because he has a big enough car. If peanut butter was not called peanut butter, what would it be called? Butter peanut. If you were to run an adult ice cream van, what song would it play, and what would it sell? Oasis and it would sell Tribute, because everyone round here loves it, don’t they?
What are your thoughts on the style the manager plays? There is a freedom to go and get in the box when the ball is on the other side of the pitch but you definitely have freedom to go and support the attacking midfielders and the strikers. The manager wants to play with lots of crosses, so that suits me. You know the manager from previously in your career, which must help you? I think it did. He hasn’t changed. Of course his role has changed, being a manager now but, as a person, he hasn’t changed at all. I think that’s credit to him because some people who get a manager’s role, they change – he certainly hasn’t. Now, he is literally managing in the same way as how he was as a player. He wants goals and crosses into the box and he wants goals; that’s just how he was as a striker. I remember him giving me some stick when I didn’t cross the ball for him and I had a shot instead. It gives me the upper hand to know what he wanted as a player, but the biggest thing for me is that I don’t think he’s changed as a person. There are several boys from the North West in the team – that also must be good for you? Of course I know some of them; they are great lads. I’m not saying that the boys from the North West are better than everyone else but, because I was up there, you have a better bond with them and have more in common, I reckon. Certainly I feel I do, but they have settled in really well and it’s a lively dressing-room. You have been involved with Dobwalls Football Club in Cornwall – can you explain how that has come about? I live pretty much next to their pitch; I walk my dogs there. I had heard, over the summer, that they had a fire. It was one of the parents that knocked on my door. They asked if I could do a little presentation and donate a signed shirt; we went down and a great day. I said, in the future, I will always be there to support them because it’s a really great little community and that’s where I’m living. I enjoyed it – it was a good fundraiser – and I hope they get the clubhouse up and running again quite soon. I think they could do with a little bit more help, so if there is anyone out there who would like to help, I’m sure they would appreciate it.
Do you feel the Argyle fans have seen the best of you? I don’t think so, no, because I have a new role now. Last season was a frustrating one because of injury, but if I can get myself into a stride and stay injury-free, then I can have a good season in a role which I feel comfortable in. For pre-season and at the first game of the season, the fans were out in their numbers – that must be a great boost for the players? I think everyone is just buying into the new era, if you like. Everyone around the club sees that the manager and his staff have been a breath of fresh air around the place. That’s what the fans want to see – an attacking philosophy. That’s what they pay their money for.

continued with match-day improvements in the horseshoe, while the Grandstand refurbishment continues apace.
“Everyone” includes large numbers of the Green Army; some visitors from Colchester; and, I hope, many new visitors to match-day at Home Park.
Our progress towards Honesty, Openness and Integrity continues, with Fans’ Forums in Devon and Cornwall, along with publishing more details of our financial situation. Not to mention a continuing series of Chairman’s Chats!
YOUR CHAIRMAN
WELCOME, everyone, to the first game of the new season!
Of course, I also welcome the new faces in our first team. They already seem to have settled in well to the club and to have made themselves accessible to our fans. It has been an exciting and busy close season at Argyle in which we have appointed a new management team, in Ryan Lowe and his assistant Steve Schumacher, along with part of their successful back-room team from last season. Ryan and Steve have already gone to great lengths to help us raise the spirits of the Green Army after the disappointment of last season. Last week’s result at Crewe was a terrific start to this season, but equally as impressive as the result was the style with which it was achieved. In Ryan and his team, we have got what we were looking for – a forward-thinking manager, well-supported by his staff, prepared to engage with our fans and provide them with exciting, attacking football. Off the pitch, the club continues to strive better to live up to its values. In particular, I will mention the success that our Community Trust is already having with the new Manadon Sports Hub (Community Focus), and that our Fan Focus has
I will also note our Community Day of Action, which was a great success, with more than 100 supporters turning up to help make Home Park sparkle and enjoy a day that was superbly organised by your club’s staff. Spirits are high, and there is much work to be done, but our football club is in good shape. I look forward to this season, as do all fans, confident that what we see on the pitch will be entertaining, and hopeful that it will be successful in seeing us make progress back up the league. As Chairman, I am confident that we continue to improve in what we offer our fans and sponsors and to make progress towards our aim of providing outstanding football while making Argyle a club we can all be proud to say is ours. Please enjoy today, and enjoy the season. Jane and I will not always be with you at Home Park or on your travels, but we will be following closely on match-days and beyond. COYG! Simon

THE Big Green Lottery has enjoyed another fantastic summer as membership continues to grow and we have been able to plough more money into the Argyle Academy. After funding a £15,000 minibus for the Academy last season, the BGL has recently turned its attention to a more scientific project which is scheduled to arrive for the Academy in the next couple of weeks. As soon as we have this new toy, we will show you, our wonderful BGL members, how your money is being spent to benefit the next generation of Pilgrim stars. As well as raising money for the Academy, BGL members can win weekly and monthly cash prizes. Through the summer, we have given out more than £2,000 in cash prizes, and BGL members joined us to take part in the official team photograph. The £500 monthly draw for July in the Big Green Lottery has been won by a very special group of people. The Senior Greens (member 625) is a long-standing institution a Home Park, a group of experienced Argyle supporters who have seen it all down the years and meet on the final Thursday of every month, with guest speakers, raffles and the bar open. Congratulations to the Senior Greens, who you can follow on twitter @SeniorGreens. To sign up for the BGL, contact us on bgl@pafc.co.uk
50/50
GOOD afternoon and welcome to your 50/50 Lottery brief. After all the changes that have been made to the Greens over the summer, the new-look team put in a fantastic performance at Crewe. The fans certainly played their part in getting behind the team and, at the end of the match, the whole squad - including manager and coaches - came over to thank us all for the support; and I must say the noise was deafening. So keep up the good work, lads - only 45 games of the same to go. For the last two seasons, Paul Keen, of Plymouth Auction Rooms, has kindly sponsored the 50/50 team with tabards and the good news is that Paul has kindly agreed to sponsor us again for the forthcoming season. Established in 1992, the Auction Rooms have evolved into one of the Westcountry's leading auction houses. Paul not only specializes in the sale of jewellery, watches and antiques, he also holds sales for fine art and has achieved high prices for various paintings, including works by Robert Lenkiewicz and Beryl Cook. If any supporter is considering parting with any items, feel free to contact Paul and his friendly team of auctioneers for some professionally experienced advice on 01752-254740 or info@plymouthauctions.co.uk. Many thanks, Paul. Remember, if you have a winning ticket, just go along to the Argyle Superstore after the match and see the staff to claim your prize, plus you have up to 21 days after the draw is made for your claim. The results are always announced at half-time and we are also on twitter now - @50argyle Whilst at the Launceston Show recently, I met up with former Argyle Lottery Chairman Bill Pearce. Bill was the founder member of the lottery and it was great to have a chat with him. He sends his best wishes to all the team and staff for the season ahead and, of course, old friends and supporters at the Theatre of Greens. Bill is quite a character and is now involved with fund raising for prostate cancer. The prizes for today's draw are:Today's prizes First - cash; Second - a home Argyle shirt, kindly donated by the Argyle Superstore; Third prize - a pair of the famous umbrellas, kindly donated by PASOTI. Thanks for supporting the 50/50 Lottery and - remember you have to be in it to win it! Enjoy the game Ken Beale and our great 50/50 Lottery team

IU Energy
SINCE 2008, IU Energy has been Argyle’s official energy partner, supplying us with 100% green power. Soon, IU are adding to the Greens’ green credentials with 57kW of Solar Panels on the new Grandstand. When it comes to business energy, IU Energy has it covered. Based in Plymouth. they are winners of numerous regional and national awards for best UK consultancy and best UK renewable energy consultant.
In 2018, they were awarded UK Consultancy of the Year for 2018-19 by the industry Oscars, the British Gas-sponsored TELCA awards. What does this mean for their business clients? Usually it means improvements to their profits – up to 7.7% on the bottom line of businesses that go 100% renewable. How much more business would you have to do to add that? That is just one of the upsides because, with the mood of the public focused very much on climate change, businesses with green credentials are gaining trade over their rivals. Let us not forget Plymouth City Council’s, ‘climate emergency’ declaration, which has them stating that the city will be net carbon-zero by 2030, a full 20 years ahead of the UK’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. Plymouth Argyle will be ready, will you?

ARGYLE IN THE FOURTH TIER OF THE EFL (PART I)
RECORD RUN OF HOME WINS
THIS is our 12th season in the fourth tier of the EFL. We have faced 63 different opponents across the 515 games that we have played at this level – a total that will rise to 67 this season as we face Forest Green Rovers and Salford City for the first time and Oldham Athletic and Walsall for the initial time at this level. Our Devon neighbours Exeter City have been our most frequent opponents: we have played them 20 times, winning 11, drawing five and losing just four, scoring 33 goals in the process and conceding 18. Our record win is 6-1 at home to Newport County on April 17, 2017. Matty Kennedy (2), Jake Jervis (2), Graham Carey and Ryan Taylor were our scorers in a match that confirmed our promotion back to League One after a six year gap. The seven goals scored in that match is a joint club record, equalling the totals in a 4-3 home win over Torquay United on October 21, 1995; a 5-2 away defeat against Cheltenham Town on September 23, 2000; and a 4-3 defeat at Leyton Orient on April 13, 1999. Away from home, our best win is 5-0 at Bury on September 2, 1995, our first victory at this level. Michael Evans (2), Gary Clayton, Chris Billy and Adrian Littlejohn scored as Neil Warnock won for the first time as Argyle manager following six defeats across all competitive first team matches.

Our heaviest defeat is 5-1 away to Oxford United on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. This result came early in Carl Fletcher’s reign as Argyle manager, with the club still in administration. Captain Simon Walton scored an equaliser for the Greens after we trailed 1-0, but the U’s ran out comprehensive winners on the night. At home, our heaviest defeat is 4-0 against York City on February 15, 2014, when Argyle centre-back Neil Trotman received his marching orders early in the first half following a professional foul. The Minstermen took the lead from the resulting penalty. Our record run of wins is six, which we recorded in August and September of 2016. At home, this record is ten, a run which started with a 1-0 victory over Rushden & Diamonds on December 29, 2001 and continued up to and including another 1-0 win, this time against Bristol Rovers on March 30, 2002. Away from home, the record is seven in the second half of 2016, a club record in any division of the EFL. Our longest undefeated run is 19 games in the second half of 2001. Paul Sturrock’s team won 14 and drew five of those matches as they went on to win the 2001-02 Third Division championship with a record haul of 102 points. At home, Kevin Hodges’s team once went 23 games without defeat. This run started with a 2-2 draw against already promoted Cambridge United in the last match at Home Park of the 1998-99 season. It continued until a 1-0 loss to Hull City in the final home game of the 1999-2000 campaign, 364 days later. Away from home, Paul Sturrock’s 2001-02 champions went 12 games without defeat at the start of their record-setting campaign. That run ended at a snowy Scunthorpe on December 22, 2001 – the defeat that also brought to an end our 19-game undefeated run mentioned above. To be continued…

HISTORY
COLCHESTER United were founded in 1937 and spent their early life playing in the Southern League until they were elected into the EFL in 1950. They have spent most of their existence in the third and fourth tiers but during the 1980s, were relegated out of the EFL for the first time. They reached the play-offs for three consecutive years from 1995-98 before going up thanks to a 1-0 against Torquay United at Wembley. In 2006-07, United gained Championship status, winning automatic promotion from League One as runners-up, three points behind winners Southend United. A late goal on the final day for seventh-placed Newport denied Colchester the final play-off position. PROUD MOMENT A HOME-GROWN Colchester United player making his debut almost goes unnoticed these days, such is their impressive quota of academy debutants over recent years.
But Andre Hasanally’s appearance as a second-half substitute against Port Vale was nonetheless another significant watershed moment for the U’s and their youth set-up.
The 17-year-old has enjoyed an impressive pre-season and has earned his place in the first-team squad. Hasanally had been knocking on the door of John McGreal’s squad last season before an untimely injury temporarily put paid to his rapid progress. Nevertheless, he is now very much involved and almost capped his firstever U’s appearance with a goal, near the end. www.gazette-news.co.uk
Last Game:
COLCHESTER UNITED 1 PORT VALE 1
The Daily Gazette's Colchester United reporter Jonathan Waldron rates the players following the hardfought draw: DEAN GERKEN 7 Showed safe hands throughout on U's return and had little chance of saving Pope’s penalty.
KANE VINCENT-YOUNG 7
Embarked on several weaving runs and largely defended well having switched to right-back.
TOM EASTMAN 8 U’s man of the match. Dealt brilliantly will Pope’s threat; capped a fine display with a superb challenge inside his own area. LUKE PROSSER 7 U’s skipper
provided vital assist for Norris goal to atone for his error in the build-up to Vale earning a penalty.
COHEN BRAMALL 7 U’s new boy seemed to enjoy his tussle with the experienced Worrall and linked up really well with Nouble. TOM LAPSLIE 8 Conceded the penalty that led to Pope opener but was impressive after that and made several excellent tackles. HARRY PELL 7 U’s midfielder looked sharp and lasted 75 minutes after starting his first competitive league game in nearly six months. FRANK NOUBLE 8 An eye-
catching display; gave Vale right-back Gibbons a torrid time throughout and was twice denied by Brown.
JEVANI BROWN 7 Had a big hand in creating Norris goal on his full U’s debut and was always positive in his attacking play. COURTNEY SENIOR 7
LUKE Norris earned Colchester a point following a closely-contested 1-1 draw with Port Vale last Saturday. Vale made the perfect start, taking a fifth-minute lead through Tom Pope, who scored from the penalty spot after Tom Lapslie fouled the impressive Manny Oyeleke in the box. Colchester pressed for an equaliser after that, with Valiants goalkeeper Scott Brown twice denying Frank Nouble and also saving from Cohen Bramall. David Amoo’s glancing header from David Worrall’s cross flew inches wide for Vale before Colchester levelled just before half-time through Norris, who pounced to score from close range after Luke Prosser had headed Jevani Brown’s pass into his path. www.skysports.com
Experienced a rather mixed afternoon but played his part in the equaliser and showed some flashes of real skill
LUKE NORRIS 7 Was in the right place at the right time for his goal and led the line well for the U’s in the number nine role. SUBSTITUTE LUKE GAMBIN (for Brown, 70) U’s debutant looked sharp in the final 20 minutes on what was his 200th career appearance. www.gazette-news.co.uk

Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS selects ten post-war Colchester United ‘Classic Campaigns’. 1947-48
Colchester made headlines as a Southern League club by reaching the FA Cup fifth round in 1947-48. Ted Fenton’s side beat Chelmsford City 3-1, Banbury Spencer 2-1 and Wrexham 1-0 to secure a third-round tie at home to top-flight Huddersfield Town. Bob Curry’s goal clinched a 1-0 victory in front of 16,005. Team: Harry Wright, Digger Kettle, Bob Allen, Harry Bearryman, Ted Fenton, Andy Brown, Dennis Hillman, Bob Curry, Arthur Turner, Fred Cutting, Len Cater. Bradford PA were defeated 3-2 at Layer Road before Colchester lost 5-0 at Blackpool in the fifth round. Ted Fenton became West Ham’s assistant-boss.
56
1956-57
Colchester narrowly missed promotion to the Second Division in 1956-57. Benny Fenton’s side began with a thrilling 3-2 win at home to local rivals Southend United and underlined their promotion challenge by beating Southampton 3-1, then trouncing Shrewsbury Town 6-0. The U’s looked promotion certainties after a 20-match unbeaten run but the loss of key players like Bob Dale and Chic Milligan contributed to three successive away defeats and Ipswich Town clinched the Third Division (South) title on the last day of the season. Colchester finished a point behind in third place, their highest League position.
1961-62
Benny Fenton managed Colchester back to the Third Division at the first attempt in 1961-62. Summer signings included Brian Abrey from Chelsea and Mike Foster from Leicester City, with the U’s unbeaten in their opening nine league games. c i ss a Cl 1965-66
Colchester regained Third Division status at the first attempt under Neil Franklin in 1965-66. New forwards included Reg Stratton and former Ipswich favourite Ted Phillips, with the U’s emerging as early pace-setters after losing just one of their first seven games. Overcoming a disappointing spell, Colchester revived their promotion challenge with only one defeat in a ten-match run early in the New Year including a 6-3 victory over Bradford PA. Brian Hall was ever-present, while other stars included Duncan Forbes, Mick Loughton and Sandy Kennon. Colchester finished fourth despite losing four of their last six games.
1970-71
Dick Graham guided Colchester United to the FA Cup quarter-final in 1970-71. The U’s defeated Ringmer 3-0, Cambridge United 3-0, Barnet 1-0 and Rochdale 5-0 to secure a fifth-round tie at home to star-studded Leeds United. Two goals by Ray Crawford plus another from Dave Simmons gave Colchester an epic 3-2 victory at Layer Road. Team: Graham Smith, Brian Hall, Bobby Cram, John Gilchrist, Brian Garvey, John Kurila, Brian Lewis, Dave Simmons, Mick Mahon, Ray Crawford, Brian Gibbs. The U’s lost 5-0 at Everton in the quarter-final and narrowly missed promotion, but beat top-flight West Brom in the 1971 Watney Cup final.
1973-74
Jim Smith managed Colchester United to promotion in 1973-74. The U’s kicked off with a 1-0 victory at Barnsley and lost just one of their opening 19 Fourth Division games to emerge as pace-setters. Leading marksman Bobby Svarc scored all four goals as Colchester triumphed 4-0 at Chester and he was ever-present together with goalkeeper Mike Walker and central defender Ray Harford. Title hopes faded with three successive defeats in early March but Gary Moore was signed to replace the injured Steve Foley

1976-77
Bobby Roberts guided Colchester United back to the Third Division at the first attempt in 1976-77. Young players like Ian Allinson and Steve Dowman impressed as the U’s lost just two home league games all season, against Cambridge United and Southend, also taking topflight Derby County to an FA Cup fourth-round replay at Layer Road. A thrilling climax to the campaign saw Colchester finish in third position with 59 points and win promotion with Cambridge United, Exeter and Bradford City. Long-serving Micky Cook was the sole ever-present player, while Bobby Gough and Colin Garwood scored 44 goals between them.
1991-92
Colchester United won the Conference title and FA Trophy Double in 1991-92. Having finished runners-up to Barnet the previous season, the U’s regained EFL status at the second attempt. season. Colchester beat Kingstonian 3-2, Merthyr Tydfil 1-0, Morecambe 3-1, Telford United 4-0 and Macclesfield Town 4-1 en route to the FA Trophy final, defeating Witton Albion 3-1 at Wembley.
1997-98
Colchester United won promotion to the Second Division via the play-offs in 1997-98. New signings Ian Hathaway and Aaron Skelton made their debuts as they began with a 2-1 win at home to Darlington. Steve Wignall’s side were languishing in mid-table when defender Guy Branston arrived on loan from Leicester City in early February. The U’s soared up the table with ten wins from their last 15 League games and were pipped to automatic promotion by Lincoln City, but reached the Third Division play-off final with a 3-2 win over Barnet. David Gregory’s penalty clinched a 1-0 win over Torquay United in the Wembley final.
2005-06
Chris Iwelumo was top scorer with 17 goals as Colchester United won promotion to the Championship for the first time in 2005-06. Phil Parkinson’s side won just one of their opening seven League One matches but a thrilling mid-season run of 13 wins in 15 games, including a 5-0 hammering of Gillingham, catapulted the U’s to the top of the table. Colchester also reached the FA Cup fifth round for only the fourth time in their history, as well as the EFL Trophy southern final. They maintained their challenge and lost just one of their last 11 matches, clinching promotion as runners-up with a 0-0 draw at Yeovil on the final day.

"John played his part as Ipswich won promotion to the Premier League in 2000" NINO ROBERTSON looks at the career of the man in charge of today’s opponents. AFTER making a good impression in Tranmere Rovers’ various youth sections, John McGreal started his professional career as a defender in 1990 and went on to become a regular in the first team. In 223 appearances for Rovers, he scored just once. Unfortunately, his only goal was effectively cancelled out – by himself. In February, 1994, John opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City, at Filbert Street, the Foxes’ old home. Later in the contest, he scored an own goal when he sliced a header from Ian Ormondroyd, which would otherwise have gone wide, into his own net. After nine years at Tranmere, John was subject of interest from Towns Ipswich and Huddersfield. He opted for the Portman Road side as a bid in the region of £650,000 was accepted by Tranmere. John played his part as Ipswich won promotion to the Premier League in 2000, beating Barnsley 4-2 in the play-off final at Wembley, where he partnered current Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray in the centre of the Tractor Boys’ defence.
THE McGREAL THING Favourites for relegation the following season, John scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park in a season when Ipswich defied the odds to finish fifth and qualify for the 2001-02 UEFA Cup. The following season, Ipswich were relegated but again qualified for the UEFA Cup through the UEFA Respect Fair Play ranking, with John scoring in his first game of the new campaign as Town defeated Luxembourg side Avenir Beggen 8-1. He refused an offer of a new deal to remain with Ipswich in the summer of 2004 and signed for Burnley on a three-year contract. The final season was affected by injury, following which he joined Colchester United – then in the Championship – on trial, but manager Geraint Williams decided against offering him a contract. In 2009, he became a development coach in Colchester’s Academy, before being promoted to manage the Under 18s alongside his old team-mate Wayne Brown. In 2015, he found himself in the hot seat following the departure of manager Tony Humes. In his only game in caretaker charge before returning to his academy role, Colchester were beaten 5-1 by Burton Albion. When the U’s were relegated to League Two in 2016, John was appointed first-team manager in succession to Kevin Keen. In his first season in charge, Colchester finished eighth, with John winning the January Manager of the Month award, becoming the first U’s manager since Paul Lambert in 2009 to be so honoured. After a 12th-placed finish in 2017-18, Colchester again finished one place outside the play-offs, in eighth position, last time around. Today’s match will be the 140th time that John, now 47, has taken charge of the U’s.

TODAY’S match is the 41st meeting of Argyle and Colchester United in a series that stretches back to 1950, when the Pilgrims registered their biggest ever win over the men from Essex – a 7-1 win at Home Park in which Maurice Tadman and Bill Strauss each scored twice. Inarguably, the most famous meeting between the two sides came nearly half a century later, on a balmy May evening, as CHARLIE ROSE remembers.
MAY 15, 1996, ENDSLEIGH DIVISION THREE PLAY-OFF SEMI-FINAL, SECOND LEG
ARGYLE 3 COLCHESTER UNITED 1
THE TEAMS Argyle: Steve Cherry; Mark Patterson, Paul Williams, Ronnie Mauge, Mick Heathcote; Martin Barlow, Chris Leadbitter, Richard Logan, Adrian Littlejohn; Micky Evans, Chris Curran. Colchester United: Carl Emberson; Chris Fry, Simon Betts, Ton McCarthy, Gus Caesar (Adam Locke); Peter Cawley, Mark Kinsella, Tony Dennis, Scott McGleish; Robbie Reinelt (Tony dcock), Paul Gibbs (Steve Whitton). The Background After what had seemed like an eternity, but only three days after previously meeting, Argyle and Colchester went head to head once more, with a place at Wembley awaiting the winners of the two-leg contest. Going into the second leg 1-0 down to United, courtesy of a Mark Kinsella goal, Argyle and manager Neil Warnock knew that they needed to attack if they were going to advance. With the Pilgrims having never played at Wembley previously, they were nevertheless in good hands – Warnock, an EFL promotion master had already reached Wembley play-off finals three times. With both sides knowing the prize at stake, and a packed Home Park atmosphere rocking, the teams walked out to the blistering roars. The Game Just three minutes into the match, goalkeeper Steve Cherry punted the ball upfield, and a flick-on from Chris Leadbitter found its way to Michael Evans, who pulled the trigger and found the back of the net to send Home Park into pandemonium. Four minutes from half-time, Leadbitter turned from provider to scorer when he rifled home a free-kick to send the Greens into the break 2-1 up on aggregate and with the momentum. Some Pilgrims were mentally planning their route to home of football. Warnock was sent from the dug-outs in the second half for protesting about refereeing decisions and watched from the mayflower terrace as Mark Kinsella grabbed an aggregate levelling goal in the 66th minute. As extra-time loomed at Home Park, Argyle rolled the dice, and left-back Paul Williams latched himself on to the end of a Martin Barlow cross, his header hitting the back of the net and sending the Theatre of Greens into an explosion of noise. Argyle held on to their 3-2 aggregate scoreline and booked their first appearance at Wembley, where they ultimately won promotion by beating Darlington 1-0. The Keeper Goalkeeper Steve Cherry was making his penultimate appearance for the Greens after 102 appearances across two spells. His first stint saw him arrive from Walsall in 1986 and play 73 games across three seasons before moving to Notts County. For his second spell, Cherry arrived on loan from Watford and played 19 games in the back end of the 1995-96 season before signing a one-game contract for the play-off final. After promotion, Steve moved to Rotherham United. Pop Culture In the UK music charts, George Michael’s Fastlove was top of the pile, while 12 Monkeys, starring Bruce Willis, was in its fourth and final week at the top of the UK cinema box office.
