“Matt got a bit more wet than me”. The VIPs then gathered together after lunching in the cafeteria; Julie exclaimed “I was amazed how they could cater for 500 odd people at the same time.”

Poacher Lincs to the outside world Congratulations to all of the nominees:

by Catherine Sharp Yesterday morning, Poacher 2013 had a visit from Lincs FM! Bringing cupcakes and flowers for the winner of the Lincs at Large competition, Lincs FM experienced Poacher 2013 first hand. Jackie Selby was the lady lucky enough to win the prize – she won for her dedication to Poacher 2013. Jackie has been on site since 20nd July to help set up the site and is staying after everyone leaves to take it back down! Jackie is also a Guide Leader and is currently looking after 28 Guides.

After presenting Jackie with her cupcakes and flowers, Sam Kirk and Rob Hammond were shown around Poacher. Both had been Scouts – Rob had even been to Poacher 1987! They were able to take part in activities on the camp and both abseiled and rock climbed on the tower. They then visited 2nd Louth Scout Group, Rob’s old group. They admired the elaborate gate and chatted to some of the Scouts in the group. Rob was also sneakily pegged by one of the Scouts! After a period of necker signing, Rob and Sam moved on to visit the Stamford Guides.

At the Guides’ camp, Rob and Sam interviewed three Guides and their Leader for their sister station Rutland Radio. The Guides told Lincs FM about how much fun they were having on Poacher 2013, and revealed that they were glad to be free from the constraints of home for the week! After a busy morning at Poacher 2013, Rob and Sam left for the studio. A big congratulations again to Jackie for winning Lincs at Large, and an even bigger ‘thank you’ for all her dedication and hard work to make Poacher 2013 so successful!

As part of her National Citizen Service, Tabitha went on two residential visits and had to plan a positive social action; with her team choosing to have a charity fun run in their local park. However, Congratulations to the date clashed Tabitha, a Young with Tabitha’s week Leader at 1st Usat Poacher, so she worth Guides, for decided to do her part THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

www.poacher2013.org.uk of the run at Poacher itself. Running around the site, wearing a Squadron boiler suit, she completed it in 10-15 minutes. The money raised will be going towards the TOMA fund (Cancer research fund for children and teenagers) so please visit the unit on the Wheels ‘n’ Wings sub camp to sponsor Tabitha.

Franky finds fitties! Following on from yesterday’s appeal, Franky of 3rd and 4th Radcliffe Guides on The Spirit of Christmas has been inundated with offers from fitties around Poacher! Fitty Number 1 is Dylan (pictured), and he’s

part of the Grantham contingent, who are camping on theToybox sub camp. Fitty Number 2 is Sean from The Spirit of Christmas, who handed in a note to the Media Centre. Good luck finding a fitty, Franky!

Come and try mop hockey this evening on Exploration sub camp. We also have a treasure hunt and you can make bead animals.

Some of our campers on sub camp exploration have been organising their very own sport competitions. Gemma

leader who is part Jedi and has an oversized heart similar to his belly size! He is willing to do anything, and when we say anything we mean it! From cleaning the toilet to being an 80's rock star, he loves the Scouts!

On the first day of activities, his role

was crowd control for glass engraving! He had to control the difficult masses fighting over the limited supply of pattern books. On the first day, he controlled over 300 keen glass engravers – but they only have 1800 glasses for the whole week. Unfortunately, on day two he was demoted to assistant pattern finder for some unknown reason. His new role

If you are heading to glass engraving at any point this week, you will have the chance to use the glass engraving team’s newest addition: the limited edition Poacher 2013 pattern.

The highlight of the night was when an example lava lamp suddenly popped open, shooting the contents high up onto the marquee roof! After that, the lesson was learnt and the quantities were changed! Everyone was pleased to see that the lamps worked – little bubbles wobbling up and

down the tube. That was until, around ten minutes later, when all five lamps spontaneously combusted! It may have sounded like Bonfire Night in Gadgets and Gizmos' HQ but at least it was chorused with hysteric laughter and the pitter-patter of vinegar landing on the table.

It’s Boxing Day on The Spirit of Christmas sub camp which means it’s time for our Santa Fun Run. We also have our presentation to Nomad Trust.

by Rebecca Craven On Tuesday, Gadgets and Gizmos hosted a kitchen science night for Leaders. One of the activities was making 'magic goo' from cornflour and water. When left alone, the goo was rock-hard but when tipped it began to pour like liquid, and when on your palm, it 'melted' – pretty cool!

HIYA-land

By Daniel Brock Say hello to the Scouts of the 7th and 9th Louth Scout Groups who’ve come all the way to Ireland to be here this week. The 11 hour journey, by boat and ferry was clearly worth it because the groups have described their first jamboree as

“astonishing” and “brilliant”. Amongst the activities they’ve tried so far are water rockets and go-karts, but the standout favourites are certainly the “AMAZING!” swimming trips every morning. “Not only have we enjoyed meeting other groups, but the camp

has helped us bond with each other and we are now all a lot closer because of it.” they said. “The camp has been really fun and it’s great because we have been encouraged to try stuff we wouldn’t normally do”. At their camp, the two groups have assembled their own volleyball court and would like to invite you to challenge them in a game. If you think you can win or are just looking for something new to try, then visit their site on Wheels ‘n’ Wings, near the climbing wall.

Sub aqua by Catherine Sharp Scouts and Guides have been giving the opportunity to experience the unique experience of breathing underwater! With the help of the British Sub Aqua Club, participants can learn the basics of diving. After a short briefing, the participants are

let loose in the water, playing underwater noughts and crosses, finding hard-to-spot metal disks and many other games all with the aid of compressed air! Go along to the Sub Aqua activity for a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Hop on down! by Rebecca Craven Over in the far corner of the Showground, near the off-site transport and Taster Day area, there are team games and activities going on so I went to investigate a quirky one – space hopper football. The game has the same basic rules of football but instead of running participants bounce around on space hoppers. It’s a competitive, energetic, quirky game which

requires strong legs and speed. Teams can have a maximum of seven members. Grab yourself a team and hop on down towards the off-site transport!

New Scouting Ambassador

by Daniel Brock Meet Richard Sargent, the newly appointed county Scouting Ambassador. Richard was a torch bearer at the London Games, has played wheelchair basketball for Great Britain since he was just 15 and is now the team captain. Unfortunately, when he was a Cub, Richards’s spine was broken in a car crash which meant that he now must use a wheelchair. Despite his injuries, Richard was still able to remain

involved in Scouting due to the movement’s diversity and inclusive ethos. Richard is a perfect example of how Scouting is accommodating to all and offer unique opportunities to everyone regardless of faith, ethnicity or ability. Richard used basketball as his rehabilitation following the accident, but the sport has since become his full time profession and, having just signed for a side in the professional wheelchair basketball league in Italy. The

The next Robin Hood of Poacher Wood?

by Jak Williamson Whilst here at Poacher, did you know that you can work towards your Master At Arms or Outdoor Pursuits badges by the end of the week down at the Archery area? If you feel inspired and motivated, this is an opportunity for you to participate in a staple

activity of Guiding and Scouting but at Archery, there are weird and wonderful targets to hit and challenge yourself and possibly even the staff! We headed down to Archery yesterday and spoke to some Scouts that had de-

cided to take up the challenge. Speaking about his first Poacher experience, Jack, a Scout from 6th Cleethorpes said how much he had learnt from the instructors today and declared “I am going to be like the next Robin Hood - I can’t wait to get my arrows in the gold!”

new Scout Ambassador said: “Unfortunately I haven’t been able to become a volunteer due to my career. So when the Scout Association asked me if I’d become an ambassador for them, I was over the moon!” He then went on to explain “I want to give something back to the Scouts because they gave me so much when I was a kid.”. We are sure that Richard will make an amazing ambassador for Scouting and do us all proud.

Five minutes with Becky Craven

by Rebecca Craven After a long day staffing activities, looking after Guides and Scouts, going off site, or anything else, lots of adults like to go and relax with a cold drink without the kids. Today’s five minutes is with Charlie Fontaine, one of the bar staff.

Why did you pick to be on the bar staff this year? I chose it because it’s fun! What does your role involve? Serving drinks and selling awesome Poacher glasses. How long have you been in Guiding? My entire life. What’s your favourite camp food? Eggy bread, yum! Is this your first Poacher? It’s my third. I came to the first one as a Young Leader participant and on the last two I’ve been as staff. Do you have any crazy stories from the bar? Not particularly, although yesterday we had to

dismantle the side door of the marquee in order to let Stiff ‘n’ Stilted in – they towered over the bar! Give me one interesting fact about yourself I can roll my tongue And finally, if you could be anything in the world what would you be? I would be a sloth because then I’d have an excuse for being lazy! If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? Money, a nice house, my own business - a pet hotel and rescue centre. Best camp moment? Being dragged up on stage to dance and wiggle my bum for Poacher’s Got Talent!

Meet the Team: The Karters by Danni Souter Today Danni meets the go karting and off-road buggy team - another of the exciting activities avaliable here at Poacher!

Danni first spoke to the youngest member of the team, Wilfie.

Put your clean socks in your sleeping bag at night, they will be nice and toasty in the morning. If you’re going to the toilet, aim for it! Bring your own toilet roll and remember to take it with you to the loo! Be careful when walking past tents, espe cially when it is dark, guy ropes are a trip hazard. Keep drinking plenty of water to stop dehydration.
