“The opening ceremony was a complete surprise, we couldn’t believe how many people were here and we loved seeing all the different sub camps and their displays.”

The party truly got underway with the guys from Poacher’s Got Talent with a musical whirlwind time machine, which showcased music through the ages – fitting perfectly with this year’s Jamboree theme of ‘Past, Present & Future’. Street-Beat dance troop were in their groove as they took to the stage, dancing to an array of crowd-pleasing favourites and a few golden oldies. Some members of Street-Beat were volunteer camp participants, and they certainly did their sub camps proud! As a faint cheer became a booming chant that echoed around the entire showground, the atmosphere in the showground was electric. To formally open Poacher 2013 the presenters allowed all participants to declare Poacher 2013 open. Tom, a Scout who read Poacher’s camp prayer told us “I am excited to have spoken to the entire camp – I

am most looking forward to creating memories and new friends.” Poacher 2013 opening ceremony was a truly international experience as participants from over 15 countries as well as all UK participants witnessed their country’s flag being hoisted on display around the arena, including the USA, Norway, Denmark & Hong Kong to name a few. As the Poacher flag was erected up on high, the arena erupted in to cheers and screams of glee at the thought that Poacher’s action-packed, fun-filled week had officially begun! The excitement continued well into the night with Daizy & his team who really ‘got the party started’ with a mega-mix disco, where all young people boogied and sang the night away. Clearly a brilliant night was had by all, and from all of us at the Media Centre, welcome to Poacher 2013!!

Simply visit us at the Media Centre and have your photo taken wearing your onesie before midday Wednesday, and we will pick a winner! The winner will be announced on Friday and their Poacher onesie can be collected from the Media Centre.

GLADRAGS

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

The Vikings have invaded! A frosty treat 7th Crosby Guides have brought a Christmas cake with them, all the way from Liverpool! The cake travelWled almost 200 miles to be here, and will be cut on Wednesday. There will be 400 slices, so plenty of cake for the Guides to share with all of their new sub camp friends!

GLADRAGS

Handbags and Gladrags by Daniel Brock South Holland District (nicknamed The Vikings) have invaded and whilst they didn’t arrive by boat, they’ve certainly brought quite an impressive one with them! Their longboat, constructed using chip wood and pioneering poles, features 15 shields, each with a different flag painted onto it and we want to know

who can name the most. We’d also love for you to get your photo taken in the boat so please pay them a visit; they’re located on Gladrags sub camp - just look for the big ship mast! The impressive creation took Explorer Leader Paul Derrick two and a half long weeks of hard work and a number of odd glances from

neighbours questioning his sanity. We asked Paul what inspired him to build the incredible boat, to which he replied: “Pure craziness!” Unfortunately, the boat will be disassembled at the end of Poacher but there’s no need to worry, it’ll provide plenty of campfire fuel and rather appropriately be given a proper Viking funeral!

Sub camps: What’s on? On Exploration sub camp, there will be an Exploration-style orienteering and a bead animal scavenger hunt.

Get to know your neighbours: The Spirit of Christmas sub camp are doing a giant Christmas cracker pull.

Tonight is our Leaders’ Robot Drive - so get your entries in soon!

Wacky Welly and Silly Sports night. Dress up in your wackiest wellies and take part in welly themed and other silly sports.

Esdevium games are coming to run a session of board games for the participants on Toy Box sub camp.

Challenge night: Take part in challenges in teams to win Wheels and Wings ducks.

On Top of the Pops sub camp, there is a guitar hero photo competition so see if you can get a great snap of you playing a guitar! Also at 8.30, there is a cinema club showing The Italian Job. Also from Top of the Pops, the sub camp Leaders wanted to give all staff a warm welcome message of ‘work hard, play harder’! Stay safe and make sure you pop into the sub camp HQ.

by Emily Crookes Before she even arrived at Poacher, Edith from the Gladrags sub camp caused quite the stir. The beautiful, but unfortunately plastic, fashion model is a mascot for the camp along with Raggy the teddy bear. Although she does not appear to be causing too much mischief at the moment, she upset her previous neighbours by giving them the fright of their lives. Making the most of the glorious sun, Edith prepared for Poacher by laying out in the garden on a lounger, wearing nothing but a skimpy ivy leaf bikini.

You can imagine the shocked look on the neighbour’s face when he looked over the fence and saw that sight! Luckily, Edith is now spending her time outside Gladrags HQ and the team would love your help! Currently modelling a Viking hat and a cave girl attire to create a ‘historical’ look for the ‘past’ theme, the idea is to modernise her outfit over the week, ending with a ‘space themed’ look on the final day to represent the ‘future’. However, Gladrags HQ needs you to bring items of clothing to dress Edith in on a daily basis

to continue updating her look. Don’t forget about ‘The Raggy Hunt’ which starts today. Hiding in two different locations a day, the cheeky teddy bear mascot will need to be found around the Poacher site. There is a special prize up for grabs so make sure you take part in the bear hunt! Starting at 6pm tonight, the Silly Sports Sunday will involve ‘it’s a knock-out’ style games and fun for all Gladrags campers. Don’t forget your wellies!

GADGETS & GIZMOS

GADGETS & GIZMOS

Promising to do good in the world, the Crumbed Crusader is now at Poacher and I got to chat with him – Oh My Cod!

What sort of fuel? 300 Young’s fish

fingers every day! You need to be careful in weather like this, I bet you’ll start to cook! I do get quite hot, yes.

by Daniel Brock At Poacher, we are very lucky to have a number of international units and we hope to bring you news of a different one every day. To begin with, we paid a visit to a very friendly group of Girl Scouts from the USA. The group of 10 Girl Scouts, aged between 12 and 15, accompanied by 2 leaders, spent the week in London before arriving on site yes-

terday. For most of them, this was their first time in the UK so we asked them what their first impressions were of the country and in reply we were bombarded by very enthusiastic shouts of “amazing” and “cool”. The group are called the Girl Scouts of Greenway Hill and come from Girl Scout groups across New Hampshire and Vermont. Their journey to Poacher 2013

involved a 7 hour flight and 2 hour train journey and on top of that, to make it all possible, the girls had to fundraise $3000 each. Nevertheless, they are loving every moment, even though the camp has barely begun! The group are very enthusiastic and extremely keen to meet new friends so please pay them a visit, they’re camping just to the right of the Gadgets and Gizmos sub camp HQ.

Activities Team Meeting

I’m starting to get a bit of a fishy whiff now, or could it be sweat? A bit of both perhaps! I’m sure everyone’s curious, where else have you been? I tend to enjoy camping so I’ve been to The Oaks in Lincolnshire a few times. I’ve also been on Total Wipeout in Argentina, which was broadcast on BBC so you might have seen me there! Why has someone

by Emily Crookes A huge part of your Poacher time will involve participating in a whole range of different activities; some familiar, some not as well known and some which will be a completely new experience. However, we must remember the amazing people who make these adventures possible

and appreciate the work they do. Yesterday, they all gathered together for a meeting to ensure all the plans were in place to guarantee you have a fabulous time. From the hundreds of activities which are available, here are a few to try: David and James from the Water Zorbing team summed the

activity up as ‘a hamster ball on water’. Alex, Emma and Peter were part of the Roller Disco team, promising a variety of loud music and a great time, dancing and picking up the skill of roller skating along the way.on up! For the times on camp when you may want to slow things down, Will from the

Board Games team assured us that the wide selection of games will prove interesting. Jack from the Digger Challenge team explained that the big machinery guarantees a unique, fun experience. An immense range of activities to get involved in, so make sure you grab any opportunity and most importantly, have fun!

by Rebecca Craven Deciding who to interview for five minutes isn’t an easy task – everyone is so interesting! Fortunately, I came across Keith in the car park, and he was kind enough to speak to me. Known as ‘the oldest Cub Scout in Wales’ (at 78 years old), Keith tells me a bit about himself.

Why did you choose to keep Poacher safe? I didn’t – I was allocated it! Someone had to drop out so I filled their place. This is my first Poacher but I’ve staffed many jamborees. I love events and camps like this, it is so rewarding to see the kids happy – it makes it all worthwhile. What’s your day job? I’m retired, but I used to be a sales rep. How long have you been in Scouting? I’ve been involved for 53 years and had many roles, including Vice Chairman, Assistant County and District Commissioner, and Leader Trainer. I’m also a registered volunteer for

Girlguiding so I have two plastic membership cards in my wallet! What’s your favourite camp food? A very very good cooked breakfast – black pudding and everything! Any camp no-nos? You need to be respectful to your neighbours so no loud talking when people are sleeping please! What’s your favourite camp moment? Singing Black Crow’s ‘Spirit’ at jamborees. I’m known for livening up a camp fire with that! And finally, what are you most looking forward to at Poacher? Meeting new people!

Meet the Team: The Slackers

Top five tips of the day 1)

Make sure you keep your tents zipped up. This will not only keep your personal stuff safe but will also keep the bugs out! Have a go at everything! You never know, you might find something new that you like. Drink plenty of water. You need to stay hydrated. Sleep! The activities will not be fun if you’re too tired. Remember your waterproofs, just in case we have a shower.

Jak’s Daily Camp Joke!

Q: What did the blanket say to the bed? A: Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

by Danni Souter Following on from yesterday’s media team encounter, Danni went off in search of another team to meet and greet.

Matt What is your role at Poacher? Slack lining team instructor. What are you looking forward to most at Poacher? A hot sunny week with lots

Nearly 3500 Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows & Brownies will arrive onsite for a fun packed day, acting as a participant for the day to get a feel of what life is like as a Poacher camper. The taster day theme is Heroes – the team who have spent a long time organising activities that range from climbing and inflatables, to crafts and quad biking, will be asking you: what have you done today to make yourself proud?

Danni found the slacklining team, who are located by the First Aid Point. Pay them a visit and try out slacklining for yourself! Sean What is your role at Poacher? I’m a slack line instructor. What are you most ooking forward to at Poacher? Being in the newspaper! If you were a cheese, what would you be? Probably a camembert.

Tasting the Poacher life

of music and dancing. Jaffa cakes, cake or biscuit? Cake even though you buy them from the biscuit isle! Alex What is your role at Poacher? Slack lining team instructor.

What are you looking forward to most at Poacher? Sunbathing on our sun bed and lots of dancing. What is the most embarrassing thing you have done on camp? Dancing around the campfire in a high vis tutu dressed as a fairy.

David What is your role at Poacher? Slack lining team instructor. What are you looking forward to most at Poacher? Eating and being vertical. Tent or caravan? Tent - a caravan can set on fire!

The whole point of the taster days is to give young people an opportunity to experience what Poacher is like and make them realise the potential fun, adventure and friends they could make if they chose to partake in Poacher in the future. If you see little “poacher-ets” walking around site – make them feel really welcome! POACHER 2013

First of all I need to know, do you have any super fishy powers? Every now and again I do, yes, but I need a good beat to dance to first, and some fuel.

taken a bit out of you? I bet that hurt! It didn’t hurt but I think the person was just very hungry. Sometimes I get mistaken for a chip and people try to eat me then too. I think twe need to take that message from the Crumbed Crusader that any fin is possible (get it?) here at Poacher - so get yourself on that climbing wall, shoot a bow and arrow, zip along the wire, have a go at dodgeball, and make lots of new friends! Before I had chance to say goodbye, he was gone. I’m sure he won’t be hard to spot...

Five minutes with Becky Craven

Something fishy’s going Girls on Tour on! by Rebecca Craven Long ago, on a dark and stormy night in Grimsby, factory workers were pushing through the night to produce and box fish fingers. The rain hammered against the window, the lightning flashed and the machines whirred louder than usual. The lights flickered on and off, until all the bulbs blew! The startled workers screamed in fear and a loud roar came from the crumbing room, follow by a clatter! Soon after, heavy footsteps were heard thudding along the concrete, and the doors creaked open. As the lightning struck a white light, the silhouette of a giant fish finger lumbered through the doors into the outside world... the Crumbed Crusader was born!
