Arrow-Arrow? What have we got here? by Daniel Brock Yesterday, the sky above Poacher 2013 was coloured red, white and blue by the Royal Air Force Aerobic Team, also known as The Red Arrows. The group of 9 pilots are based at RAF Scampton, just 1 mile away from the showground and flew over especially for us. As the team flew over, everyone stopped to marvel

at the impressively choreographed and very colourful display, regardless of whether they were halfway up the climbing wall or submerged underwater in the diving pool. 10th Airedale Scouts said that the “unbelievable sight” was ‘amazing’, as were The Arrows’ ‘unique skills and formations’. This was truly an amazing way to mark the first day of activities.

@poacher2013 Get in touch!

by Emily Crookes Amongst the hundreds of activities going on at Poacher this year, caving is so one of the most unusual and unique. Using a cave simulator to try and recreate the experience of being underground, the activity promises to be a fun challenge. The aim is to crawl, climb and pull yourself through the simulator, which is not

as easy as it may sound. However, when we asked Niamh from 1st Wittering Guides, who was preparing to enter the activity, how she was feeling, she said ‘excited’. Brian, the leader of the team explained “we also do a tree climbing activity to demonstrate the vertical techniques needed when caving”. This involves a ladder activity which would be used for up to 15 metres and the single rope technique activity which would be used for climbing further. A lot of excitement involving ropes, trees, ladders and harnesses! The challenge is open for everyone; youngsters and adults. Many campers have been trying the activity out already with at least 12 people having a go every half an hour. So make sure you head down to the guys and try out this ‘different’ and ‘unexpected’ activity!

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

EXPLORATION

DEAR SANTA...

NEW LEADER ENROLLED

by Emily Crookes The festive spirit is definitely in the air at 6th Boston Scouts. As well as a fantastic gateway full of decorations to create the atmosphere of Christmas, the group has a ‘Letters to Santa’ competition for their fellow Poacher campers. Helen and Karen, the Scout Leaders, explained “the Scouts thought up of the competition themselves when we were

doing our Poacher Preparation … they wanted to include it on the gateway.” To get involved, write your letter to Santa, telling him what you want for Christmas and deliver it to the postbox. The most outlandish, outrageous and original letter, which has the ability to make the group laugh the most, will win a special prize! Find the group

and their postbox on the Spirit of Christmas sub camp, near the phone box and flying a Lincolnshire flag. Make sure your letters include your name, the group you’re camping with and your sub camp and all entries should be posted by Thursday night, when the competition closes. So, get your thinking hats on, put pen to paper and may the funniest letter win!

Sunday was a very special day for Holly Rawsthorne, 19, who was newly enrolled as a Rainbow Leader in the Gainsborough Division. She was enrolled by a very special person....her mum, Zanetta Rawsthrone! Holly was enrolled as a Senior Section member at Poacher 2008, at which point she was paragliding – exotic, I know! Five years later, she now has a leadership role. We would like to wish Holly, who is staying in Exploration sub camp, a very happy and successful career in guiding!

by Catherine Sharp 1st Wivenhoe Scout Group have set up a pedal-powered Scalextric track! With the help and inspiration from their local cinema, also powered by bicycles, the Scouts built a mini Les Mans in just four meetings! These eco-friendly Scouts are very keen to be green and they’re raising

awareness with other Scouts about the importance of living sustainably. This track has proven popular with other groups who have come to see the track and try it out for themselves. Their sub camp, Wheels n Wings, was the initial reason for the sustainable Scalextric, and the popularity of Scalextric through the years

provided the link for the ‘Past, Present and Future’ theme of the camp. The group are putting on a series of competitions including an endurance test and a 10 lap race. If there’s a racer in you, go along to their campsite on the Wheels n Wings sub camp and have a go!

by Daniel Brock Meet Julie and Kristoffer from the 8th Moss Scout Group in Norway! They’re part of a group of 4 Scouts, 3 Rangers, and 2 leaders who have travelled hun-

dreds of miles to be here this week. To the 8th Moss Scout Group, attending Poacher is very much a tradition, having attended every one since the very first camp in 1977. How-

ever, to Julie and Kristoffer, the experience is brand new, so to prepare them they attended the Norwegian National Jamboree in Stavanger two weeks ago. Amongst other things, Kristoffer is very keen to try go-karting, whilst Julie’s eager to try climbing and parascending. Ultimately though, they are just very keen to have a great time. The whole unit are very much enjoying their time in the UK so far and would love for anyone to drop by their campsite and say hello, or even the Norwegian equivalent – “hallo”. To find the very friendly group, simply look for the Norwegian flag on the Spirit of Christmas sub camp.

by Jak Williamson The Media team want to give a massive Poacher welcome to Charles, a Scout from 7th Lincoln. Charles has been hired as a junior reporter for The Time Machine, after he visited the Media Centre interested in all things newspaper related. He is

also working towards his writing badge at Scouts and will be completing some of the clauses at Poacher 2013. Charles came over to say a big hello to us here in the Media Centre and asked how he could possibly be involved, and he jumped at the chance with such excitement and enthusi-

asm to write a report for Poacher, with that he was hired! Charles told us how excited he was to be given this chance to be apart of the newspaper. We’re all sure he will make a brilliant reporter for the newspaper and we are extremely happy that he would like to join us! Watch out for Charles’ reports throughout the week & congratulations from all in the Media Centre :) If you are interested in being involved with anything media related: be it newspaper, radio or website – pop in and see what opportunities are available.

Five minutes with Becky Craven

by Rebecca Craven Activities are what keep Poacher-goers busy and happy - they give you guys a chance to try new things or hone their existing skills. Some are high octane, others more peaceful, and if it weren’t for the people behind the scenes, lots of you would be sitting in the field all week twiddling their thumbs!

Why did you choose to be on the activities team? I was asked by my daughter Cat as she is leading this activity base. Is this your 1st Poacher? No, it’s my fifth. I used to come with by Scout group but last year and this I’m on the activities team. What’s your favourite part of being on the team? Helping the kids to have fun and seeing them enjoying themselves. Which sub camp are you staying on? Top of the Pops How long have you been in Scouting? 18 years officially, many more as a helper. Do you have a favourite

camp memory? Yes, on one of my first Poachers I abseiled down the Bat Tower! Any camping no-nos? Don’t forget your toothbrush, and don’t wake your Leaders up too early! What’s your favourite camp food to get you through the days? A lovely roast dinner. It needs preparing beforehand but it is really easy to cook at camp! And finally, if you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I’d be a dog because they’re always loved. All are welcome to visit Angie and try out lawn games for themselves!

Meet the Team: The Zorbers

Top five tips of the day 1)

2. 3. 4. 5.

Make sure your tent is pegged out properly. If not, your tent could fly away or you could be sleeping in a very soggy sleep ing bag! Have showers! No one likes a smelly camper. Keep applying sun cream. You can still get sunburnt when it’s cloudy! Don’t leave your shoes too close to the shower, a moist sock can very uncomfort able. Make sure your airbed will stay inflated before you go on camp, the ground is very hard!

Jak’s Daily Camp Joke!

by Danni Souter After seeing all the fun participants around camp are having in the zorbing zone, Danni decided to collar the Zorbing team and introduce the team behind the activity. Zorbing is located behind the craft village and has been very popular with our participants already!
