Poacher makes a splash at the Water Village!
Gimme a taste of Poacher...
by Jak Williamson As thousands of kidlets descend upon the Lincolnshire Showground for a day of action-packed fun, current participants welcome our guests from all over the region. Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows and Brownies have been given potentially their first opportunity to experience an international camp with activities, crafts and projects taking place in all the sub camps over the last two days. Maisie, from 2nd Metheringham Brownies told us that “I am so happy I climbed all the way to the top of the climbing wall AND then abseiled back down...I’d love to come to Poacher when I’m older, it’s so much more fun than normal everyday things like watching TV.”

Disco, Disco, Disco Reminder: the disco is down in the Sheds every evening, starting after Poacher’s Got Talent and finishing at 9:45pm. Get down there for all the latest banging tunes and to party with all your friends; new and old. See you down there! by Danni Souter For those who have not made it to the water village yet, I definitely recommend you go. Yesterday, I took a trip to see what was going on there and it is fantastic! There is so much to do from sailing to raft building. While I was there I caught a group of Scouts and Guides trying out some kayaking. Ryan from 10th Waddington Scouts said “it was really good, the best part was filling the boat with water”. The raft building looked like so much fun. The floating ducks team made a
fantastic raft that even managed to float on the water, which was due to them working as such a great team. At the water village, there is a large team of around 60 staff! They are working hard to make sure you have an awesome time while
you’re there but also keep you safe and make sure you know what you are doing. Before I left I managed to speak to some Scouts that had just finished sailing. Alex from 15th Lincoln Scouts said “i really enjoyed it, it was the first time I’ve been in a boat that big.”, while Jacob (also from 15th Lincoln Scouts) agreed and said “we had a water war with some Guides, we won in the end!” The water village is a amazing place to have waterbased fun and with so much to try maybe you could have a go at something you haven’t done before!

From making bird boxes to melting trash aluminium and moulding it into the emblems of Scouting and Guiding to making recycled paper (guaranteed messy fun), there are a whole range of activities for you to try. Minibeast hunting and pond dipping are particular interesting things to do; rooting around in the woods and pond to see what you can find, catching all kind of fascinating beasties with nets, and using the identification chart to discover exactly what you have found. Don’t worry if you haven’t got tickets either; there are a variety of environmental games to get involved with. So come along and check it out!

Down at the International Tent, they are offering the chance to have a go at the ‘Round The World Challenge’ by completing 10 activities from the little blue booklet which you can collect from

At least one challenge from each section must be done; including sections like Adventure, Creative, Entertain and Relax and challenges like send a digital postcard and watch a whole film in the Poacher cinema. It is open to anyone from the age of 10 to 15, with at least 600 booklets already being worked on by Poacher campers.

Fantastic First Day!!
by Charles, 7th Lincoln Scouts If I could sum up my first day at Poacher with one word, that word would be phenomenal. The activities had me jumping with excitement and anticipation, the sweets sent me rushing to the tuck shop and the whole day was an absolute blast. I was not the only one who thought this, however, Dylan
(10) from 7th Lincoln Scouts said “This was the most fun I’ve ever had so far. I can’t wait for tomorrow.” This was also echoed with very similar enthusiasm by Steve, Callum and Rob from Sale near Manchester, they told me “It has been fantastic so far. It’s the best camp I’ve ever done and there have been the most fun activities ever.” My first day at Poacher 2013 was packed with fun activities from start to finish. First, we were woken up by the sound of clashing frying pans by our leaders followed by a delicious cooked breakfast. I then explored the site
A day with Gill Slocombe, Chief Guide
by Rebecca Craven and Catherine Sharp At midday yesterday, onlookers awaited the arrival of Chief Guide Gill Slocombe, who was accompanied by North East England’s Chief Commissioner, Hilary Cooper. As she arrived the ‘paparazzi’ snapped away as both were presented officially with Poacher 2013 neckers, and a site map – just in case we lost them!
Sunday 28th July 2013

The first stop was Exploration HQ where Gill and Hilary were given a much needed cup of coffee and chatted with sub camp chief Jo about the activities taking place. After the refreshments, Gill visited the taster day heroes, who were enjoying their lunch as the thunder rumbled above. She chatted to the Rainbows and Brownies who were huddled from the rain in the craft tent, and
for a while with my friends before taking a tour of my home city Lincoln with them. Next, I made some spider lollies from the Lincoln College craft tent before having a water fight back at my camp. Finally, we mucked about on the site for a while before we crowded into our crazy tent, which full of Scouts high on sugar. At the end of the day, one thing was certain - nobody could wait for the next day. Oliver (13) from Lincoln agreed with me, saying “I’ve really enjoyed the the first day. I can’t wait to see what the next day brings.” as a weather-appropriate guiding song ‘Thunderation’ was belted out by a few Brownies, the clouds began to clear and the VIPs were set to go. On the way to the pyrography and teabag folding tents, we came across a lost, upset little Guide who was cold from the rain. Gill showed her wonderful guiding spirit by giving her hoody to the girl. We were greeted at the pyrography tent by a gentleman wearing a rather funky wooden hat, and at the teabag folding tent, we learned that it is actually very similar to origami, except smaller, and on patterned paper or card which can then be used as decorations. Gill spoke to the Leaders and the Guides who were eagerly anticipating the next session. Lunch was next, and when the caterer saw
Rain won’t stop the Danes British culture and experience the sights of London. Throughout their trip, they’ve noticed many differences between the UK and Denmark but when but they put particular emphasis on the differences in architecture of the two nations and described the UK as fun by Daniel Brock and exciting, partly Today, our search because London was for new international so busy and scary! friends leads us to These Scouts are this very welcomno strangers to the ing group of Scouts UK however; their from Svendborg in unit has formed a Denmark. The 16 strong tie with the strong group took 3rd Sleaford Scout their 2 hour flight Group, having met from Copenhagen to them at a previous Stansted airport a few Poacher. The units days before Poacher have shared many in order to have some experiences together, time to soak up some as they regularly visit
each other and participate in their own mini ‘HoHos. Over the last two days, the Scouts have tried a wide range of activities despite the weather . Among their favourites were: go karting and high ropes, however there seemed to be a mutual fondness for the POD’s funky roller disco! The Danes are looking to make lots more new friends, having already met representatives from several different countries. They are an extremely warm and friendly bunch. To find them, just search for the Danish flag near the main entrance. They’d be more than happy to meet you!
who she was serving, Gill was presented with a Guide unit’s scrapbook to sign of which she happily wrote a paragraph for the group to keep forever. She also posed for a photo before being whisked off to Splodge Supermarket and then up to the Media Centre for her slot on Poacher FM. Gill was also asked to pick a song, choosing John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’. After her radio slot, we moved on to the gift shop where Gill was presented with a gift – her own Poacher teddy bear! I later asked the bear’s name (he’s called Poacher). From here the tour continued, visiting other ‘behind the scenes’ staff, the International tent, and the Tower. Leaving Poacher does not mean that Gill can rest however, she has other camps to visit.
I couldn’t believe I was actually in the Prime Minister’s house! When I was younger, all my best memories are from camping. I went to three camps as a Guide, none of them were international or on the scale as Poacher 2013, but they were great fun! I used to love outdoor cooking and because I lived in Devon we did a lot of barbeques on the beach! What are your future hopes for Guiding, and do you have any messages for campers? I hope that in the future, guiding continues to expand. For girls who are Guides at the moment, I’d say stick with it because it is such an important thing to do especially in later life. It helps shape girls and gives them so much confidence in the adult world.
Chief Guide Q&A
How long have you been in Guiding? I started as a Brownie aged seven and continued through Guides to Sea Rangers. I volunteered on and off as a leader. What’s been your favourite memory of Guiding? I have so many great memories from guiding! I attended the World Conference in 2010 in Edinburgh – it was the first time I’d ever been to a World Conference and it was fantastic. I also went to a meeting about national awards at Downing Street which was surreal. It was almost difficult to concentrate because

Five minutes with Becky Craven
by Rebecca Craven Today, Becky talks to Caroline Relton, Sub Camp Leader on Top of the Pops. So, ‘Crazy Cazza’, why the nickname? I do stupid things all the time and am always in the thick of it. Being crazy keeps me young, I can relate to my campers. Give us an interesting fact
about yourself... Nobody can touch my feet, not even my husband. So, what’s your favourite camp moment? There are so many, but I would have to say it was at the World Scout Jamboree in 2007. My day job is a sister in A&E, so on camp I was a nurse. Me and a doctor grabbed a golf buggy and were screaming along camp to get to the medical centre, when three boys jumped out asking for a lift. We let them on and kept driving, until security started racing along behind us thinking we had stolen the buggy! As we sped up, we forgot about the boys until
they piped up from behind us saying they’d need the medical team if we kept up the pace, and when we said we were the medical team, they jumped off! What’s your ‘must do’ at camp? To be mad and have fun. I always say work hard and play harder! Why do you enjoy being the Sub Camp Leader? I enjoy the fact that these young people pay to come and work at Poacher, and put so much effort into their roles – they’re so enthusiastic! I love that they enjoy themselves so much I tend to hear later that they’ve gone on to be Leaders, or even set up their own unit.

Top five tips of the day 1) Wear your pyjamas to breakfast! This means you can go straight there from bed and cause uproar in the staff catering hall. 2) Flip-flops are great to wear in the shower, especially when the shower blocks are a bit dirty. 3) If you find yourself with nothing to do, why not try a different activity? 4) Invite another Scout group around for dinner. Not only will you make new friends, your Leader may be a better cook than theirs! 5) To keep your activity passport safe, attach some ribbon to the bag and then attach that to your necker.
