Sharing the amazing Poacher Spirit

The Lincolnshire Showground yesterday welcomed a local celebrity - Leigh Milner from BBC Radio Lincolnshire to broadcast live from Poacher 2013. Leigh co-hosted a segment for Scott Dalton’s breakfast show with some of our international participants from Hong Kong, as she certainly enjoyed a breakfast...Poacher style! The broadcast came live from the Wheels n Wings sub camp and featured Guides from home and abroad. Leigh quizzed Guides from Whitton and Barnetby about their time so far at Poacher. Charlotte (12) told BBC Radio Lincolnshire that “catapulting was the best activity she had done on site – and her trip on Monday into Lincoln to visit the BBC studio was amazing”.

During the live broadcast, Leigh spoke to some of our international participants from Hong Kong. She was interested to know why the girls where here in Lincolnshire and how long it had taken the girls to get to England.

weather W E D N E S D A Y

Natalie (14) explained that the flight took 12 hours and she had to “watch lots of movies and eat stuff to stay awake”. Leigh was also interested to find out what the girls where most looking forward to. Charmaine (16) told her that her visit to Lincoln cathedral

“would be a highlight of her trip” as her favourite thing whilst being in England had been the architecture! Here at The Time Machine we are excited to announce that we also got a very big boost after Leigh told listeners that the daily paper was phenomenal and was keeping

sunny with chance of showers

all participants of Poacher on the pulse! She also gave a shout out to Poacher FM. The interview concluded with Leigh talking about the antics at the POD during the evening and had heard camp gossip about the girls being party

animals – Carmen (14) didn’t waste any time and outright admitted that “we are party animals, the raves in the disco are awesome and Poacher is amazing!”. If you want to listen back to the interview visit BBC iPlayer at:

The Dambusters Fly Again! By Catherine Sharp On a warm and sunny day, the sight of gliders silently roaming the skies is a very inviting sight. On closer inspection, it turns out that these gliders are being piloted by Poacher participants! Flying on an exWorld War Two airfield, (in fact, ‘Dambusters’ was filmed there!) participants are winched up into the air at 60 miles an hour to a height of about 12,00 feet. Their gliding experience lasts around 10 minutes, flying over beautiful Lincolnshire scenery! The gliding club was established in

1965 in Sturgate and then moved to Kirton-in-Lindsey in 1974 where they’ve been since. All the instructors are volunteers and are very keen to help others achieve their gliding licence. Mark, an instructor at the club, said that ‘all the Scouts and Guides had a great time and really enjoyed themselves. We’d love to have more people in the club, its an exhilarating feeling flying solo and it would be great if more people could experience it.’ Joanna, a Scout with 3rd Ashton Scouts, said she was ‘very excited,

I’d never been on anything like this before! I felt happy and free!’ This seemed to sum up the general tone of the participants at the gliding activity. Nick, with 8th Staly Bridge Scouts, said it was ‘one of the best experiences of my life’ while Harry, also with 8th Staly Bridge Scouts said it was ‘all he wanted to do all week!’ You can begin to glide from the age of 10, but it’s never to late to learn! Pop along to Kirton-in Lindsey Gliding Club for a taste of freedom!

Let’s knot be lazy... agement and helpful tips from their Young Leader Aden and all in just 15 minutes!

By Daniel Brock A group of 6 Scouts from the Hornsea and Brandesburton Scout Groups have displayed great initiative and really shown that traditional Scouting skills are alive and well by deciding to pioneer a stretcher

from poles and rope to carry ‘casualties’ as part of their water gun wars. Will, Dan, Morgan, Adam, Euan and Alex assembled the handy structure independently, with only a few words of encour-

“It was so fun to do and we would really recommend taking on a project like this to anyone as you can improve your knot tying skills whilst having a great time”. The boys are looking to take on a new challenge, but what will their next project be? Early speculation suggests that they may build a tepee but we’ll have to wait and see…

and kept a straight face the whole time, even through the dodgy jokes. The 'ceremony' then finished with basmati rice, left over from the chilli con carne they were planning for tea, being used as 'confetti' and the brides throwing the 'bouquet of flowers', made with straws and hair scrunchies.

GLADRAGS

by Emily Crookes When the newspaper were asked to attend a wedding at 1st Belton Guides, we were all intrigued about what we were letting ourselves into. It turns out that Chloe and Olivia, who were the 'brides', had participated in a small unit challenge which had spiralled into a big ceremony created by the Guides' vivid imaginations. The activity was to draw a present they wished to give to their partner and one drew EXPLORATION

After being greeted with a drink and a lolly, we were shown to our seat and guests from 5th Rotherham Scouts were also invited. The 'brides' and their 'bridesmaids' walked down the aisle to Rory from the Scouts playing the bagpipes. The 'registrar' Shannon ensured there were no objections, asked for the vows to be read Yesterday evening was definitely exciting for Charlie Parry who officially enrolled into 1st Sutton Guides, camping with Cheshire Border on the Exploration sub camp. At 5pm, she headed down to the pioneering zip line

Just some of the unusual things Poacher campers do in their spare time!! with her Guide unit and with us following in tow, she dragged her Leader up to the top of the platform. Charlie then made her Promise proudly and launched into the air, legs dangling, as she zipped down the line!

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

Find Frankie a fitty

Black Hole by Daniel Brock Poacher 2013 is all about experiencing new adventures and challenging yourself, and of course there’s no better activity to enable you to do this than the intimidatingly named ‘Black Hole’. The activity involves participants navigating their way through a cleverly formulated and cunning system of tunnels in absolute darkness. In order to prevent yourself getting fooled by the maze’s deceptive dead ends and reach the finish line, you’ll need to work together as a team and communicate effectively, in order to compen-

sate for the lack of light. Heather, Lara and Charlotte from the 4th Stamford Guides are amongst many intrepid explorers who have taken on ‘The Black Hole’ and won. “We would love to do it again; it was so fun!” they said, “We would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a new challenge.” Heather told us “I took the lead, but to get through we all had to work together and support each other.” The group of three were successful in beating the challenge, but are you brave enough to take on ‘The Black Hole’?

Stay safe in Camp photo of the day the sun A reminder from the medical team to ensure that you are drinking plenty of fluids and applying sun cream regularly in the warm weather. If you start to feel unwell in the sun, please return to your leaders at your sub camp and ensure that you drink plenty of water, before returning to your activities.

Congratulations again to 2nd Seaton Delaval on Exploration (and there were lots of great entries, making it really hard to choose!). Let’s have some new winners tomorrow.

by Danni Souter Are you male, single, aged between 20 and 30 and fit? Then we have the woman for you! 3rd and 4th Radcliffe Guides are trying to find (their leader) Frankie a fitty.

She is in her mid 20s and incredibly kind. Her Guides describe her as funny, amazing, enthusiastic and a little childish. She is very sporty and really into basketball. She is looking for some-

one who is around 6 foot without facial hair and preferably Irish or Australian but that doesn’t matter too much as long as you’re fit. If this sounds like you, then you can meet Frankie on the mound near the main arena or on The Spirit of Christmas sub camp. 3rd and 4th Radcliffe Guides would also like to say a big thank you to all of their leaders, Marian, Nicola, Susan and of course Frankie.

TOYBOX

Adult challenge complete!

by Catherine Sharp Two Guide Leaders are the first and second adult helpers to complete and receive their Adult Challenge badge! Natalie Taylor and Kate Taylor from 3rd Wisbech Guides completed the award in just seven hours, racing around the campsite to ensure they didn’t miss out on the limited number of awards available. This award is the first of its kind – there has never been an adult award at Poacher

before! To complete the award, Natalie and Kate had to complete at least three challenges from four subchallenges; ‘Leaders Activities’, ‘International Tent’, ‘Make New Friends’ and ‘Sub Camps’. Challenges included drinking tea and indulging in relaxing massages, finishing a wordsearch and meeting everyone on their subcamp, Toybox. Natalie and Kate

have said that this award was a great way to meet lots of new people and see around the campsite. They both agreed that the award was a really brilliant way for adults to experience the full spirit of camping and would definitely recommend that other leaders and volunteers do it too! A big congratulations to Natalie Taylor and Kate Taylor for being the first and second adult helpers to complete the award!

Scouts and Guides dig Archaeology

by Emily Crookes Fancy doing something a bit different this week? Have you thought about heading over to the Archaeology activity hut? Ran by experts from Bishop Grosseteste University, the team have a range of fascinating activities available. These include foren-

sic facial reconstruction, making mosaics and Roman sandals, studying cave art, recording different buildings, digging up skeletons and bones, bones and more bones! And the best bit? You don't necessarily need a ticket to get in as the team will find you things to get involved in! Zoe from

Bishop Grosseteste University Community Archaeology Team told us“everyone is loving it and coming back for more!” We asked Molly who was at the hut what her favourite part of the session was and she explained “I found the Roman and Victorian finds really interesting”. The chance to handle real artefacts from the historical period is a rare occurrence so make sure you head down to the Action Project area to visit the hut and see what fascinating things you can find and learn about!

A massive THANK YOU to everyone on the Site Services team who are cleaning the toilets and showers, and keeping them all well stock. To make their lives easier, please could you put all of your rubbish in the bins in the toilets.

Lord Williamson Grylls The Apprentice

by Jak Williamson Charles has now been in post for a full day and as our junior reporter, we wanted to you to get to know him better, so we thoroughly quizzed the young budding reporter. Before we got down to the nittygritty of the Q&A session, Charles wanted to thank all of us here in the Media Centre for allowing him the opportunity of being a junior reporter... what a lad!! Where are you from? Lincoln When did you first discover your enthusiasm for writing? I did a topic in literacy about a fantasy

dragon when I was in Year 3 and I loved it. When you’re not Scouting, what is your favourite hobby? Drumming, writing & reading – they're all amazing! If you could be any vegetable, what would it be and why? Cucumber, because its not horrible. Do you think it is acceptable to wear your PJs to breakfast? Definitely - I do it all the time! If you could be a day of the week, which would it be and why? Friday, because you have the whole weekend to look forward

RV’s Evening Toi-lets work together! Entertainment Popular Lincolnshire folk band will be performing in RV’s Leaders’ Bar this evening.

by Daniel Brock If you’re finding yourself a bit peckish or fancy a break from your usual camp meal of spag bol with watery, tasteless sauce and overcooked pasta, then pop down to the bistro. It’s located between the international tent and Skip’s

kitchen on the village green. Opening hours are 9am – 4pm for breakfast and lunch, then 5pm – 7pm for dinner. Please note that dinner will have to be pre-booked. The bistro may stay open later than 7 on some nights and hot chocolate will be available.

The evening will start at 8pm, and the usual drinks etc will be avaliable as you relax and enjoy a popular local band who are keen to get their music heard by a wider audience. See you there!

by Danni Souter If you’re passing the Epic Centre today or tomorrow, head to the Anglian Water stall. They have some fantastic activities for

you to try. The first is a water supply challenge. Using pipes and connectors, you need to get the water to the businesses efficiently and evenly.

to! If you had to sacrifice your favourite book, what would be? Fantastic Mr Fox (reluctantly!) What is your favourite biscuit and why? Bourbon, because of the three layers of chocolate. Well, now you know our junior reporter a little better, we hope if you see him around Poacher and you feel like you have a story he could report on please stop him and say hello! Also, keep a beady eye out for Charles' reports in the paper.

This challenge also comes with a prize if you do it well! Another activity is to make a chooser for you to play with your friends. The chooser has many slogans on it about what should and should not go down the toilet. The slogans include ‘Don’t be in a rush think, about what you flush!’ and ‘Bin wipes to avoid blocked pipes.’ This is a great activity to have here at Poacher, as toilet blocking appears to be a bit of a problem at the moment!

Beavers hit the big time!

by Daniel Brock One month ago, 19th Evington Beaver Colony took a new approach in their attempts to recruit new Beavers and Leaders by uploading a video to YouTube starring themselves. At first, the video was gaining just a few views every day and one month on it had pretty much reached expectations, gathering a respectable

500 views. However, against all odds, this week, within just 48 hours the clip’s views had spiralled out of control and at the time of writing had reached over 50,000 views – approximately the equivalent to everyone at Poacher watching it 7 times each! This overnight hit has not only broken, but destroyed all expectations. The man behind the

camera, and responsible for this success story is the group’s ABSL, who was also supported by: Pam Sloan, Jack Payne, and Jackie Pickett (all leaders within the group). Originally, the group had completed a video of the now famous ‘Harlem Shake’ which itself proved very successful, reaching 7,000 views. This time however, the video was a lip sync set to the mod classic ‘Time For Action’. The 19th Evington Beavers will certainly be expecting an increase in membership after this video went viral!

Poacher’s Definitely Got Talent! by Emily Crookes 61 people auditioned on Sunday, 72 people on Monday and by 2pm, 59 people had signed up already for Tuesday… just from these stats, it’s safe to say, Poacher really has Got Talent. With the final closely looming on Thursday evening, today is the last time for all of you to show the world of Poacher

your talents! A whole range of amazing acts, including comedians, ventriloquists, unit dancing teams and instruments like saxophones, have auditioned this year and we must say well done to every single one of you, especially the three from each evening who won the semi-finals at the Shed. Donna, aka Mush, from Team Talent told us “I was

really surprised about how many kids have actually come prepared for Poacher’s Got Talent … they brought their instruments with them and even had pre-made backing tracks”. So being the last day, make sure you come down to the Poacher’s Got Talent audition tent and amaze the audience with your talent.

Visit to Lincoln Cathedral at the moment and inside some workmen were seen putting a stain glass window pane back in.

by Rebecca Craven Lincoln Cathedral is more than 1,000 years old and has had millions of worshippers and visitors pass through its doors. Yesterday it was Poacher’s turn! Split into two groups, the kids were given a guided tour of the Cathedral. The Cathedral is undergoing some renovation

It was a great opportunity for the international participants and those not from Lincolnshire, to learn about our history and culture, whether they were religious or not. Looking up in awe the groups learned the story of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, as depicted on a huge stained glass window. As everyone meandered along,

they passed a wall carved with dozens of squares, each filled with a flower. These squares were an apprentice’s test to see if they were good enough to become a real stonemason. All but two were exactly the same; the rebellious squares showed a bird catching a worm, and, for some reason, an upside down face. “It was good to learn about the stonemasons and the bird,” said Elspath from Lincoln. At 3pm the bells chimed and a message played asking for a moment of reflection while a prayer

was read. Afterwards the story of the Lincoln Imp was told – how a mischievous little imp disobeyed an angel who consequently turned him to stone where he forever stays onlooking the visitors. The Cathedral is so grand and intricate that it is not always easy to see so the group found it helpful when the guide shone a torch on interesting features.

Girl Guides of Hong Kong. “It is a tour I would recommend,” said Chantelle from Brigg. As we left, a busking guitarist serenaded visitors photographing the Cathedral. It was a very tranquil way to end the peaceful day.

The group also viewed the Magna Carta and other artefacts and at a nearby noticeboard filled with prayer requests we

saw that someone had prayed for everyone at Poacher. We had a guided tour but as we reached the cloister, the participants sat between the columns and had shots taken with the garden square and the steeple in the background. “The architecture is beautiful, it’s my favourite part,” said Natalie from

They’ve come a Kong way! by Daniel Brock We have a lot of international participants at Poacher 2013, but none have travelled quite as far as this bunch of very cheerful Guides who took a 12 hour flight to get here, all the way from Hong Kong! The group of 4 Guides and 2 Leaders are camping as part of a large group consisting of 8 other contingents, all of whom are from the UK. Poacher will form the main part of the Guides’ trip, but they did spend 2 days in London beforehand in order to experience the country’s culture and will spend a further 5 days there after Poacher. Amongst the attractions that they have visited so far are Big Ben, The London Eye, Westminster, and Buckingham Palace. They intend to continue their tour of London

by visiting China Town and Oxford Street. “Visiting London was such fun, even though the weather was a bit cold!” they exclaimed! Then, when asked what their opinion of the camp was, they replied: “Everyone is so friendly. We have already exchanged phone numbers and emails with many new friends - we love being here! Tree climbing was a great challenge and was certainly my favourite activity!” they shouted with enthusiasm. The group of Guides come from several different Guide companies across Hong Kong Island and West Kowloon. When questioned about the differences between the UK and Hong Kong, unsurprisingly, the weather was the first thing that came up - “Your summer feels like

our winter!” one said. As the conversation shifted to Scouting and Guiding, they pointed out that whilst they do wear neckers in Hong Kong Guiding, Guides in the UK don’t. However, they appeared to be disappointed that in Hong Kong, pins perform the role of a woggle – which are completely unheard of here! Some of the Hong Kong Guides had never met each other before their preparation for the camp, so to prepare for their trip they had about 10 preparation meetings, during which they choreographed a martial arts routine which will be performed in the international tent tomorrow. The Guides wouldn’t be here if it were not for the Hong Kong Girl Guide Association, who paid for the majority of their trip, so are very grateful to them. The group

are staying on the Wheels n Wings sub camp, right next to the Taster Day entrance. Please pop along to meet them, they’re very warm and friendly and are only too keen to meet new people!

Leaders’ Pyrography A pyrography evening session for leaders will be Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm till dark! Come and make your favourite patterns or burn a design for your troop or group. Find Bob Neil in the craft activities for more details, if not, see you there!
