Wayne pops in to Poacher by Daniel Brock Yesterday marked the visit of the UK Chief Commissioner of Scouting to Poacher 2013. Wayne Bulpitt, who plays an integral part in the running of the Association, spent the day roaming the Poacher site and exploring the unique opportunities
the camp has to offer. Wayne was led on a guided tour by Scouts Jack and Molly from 7th Lincoln Scout Group, to such activities as caving, tree climbing and scuba diving. They even took a sneaky detour to check out the roller disco! He also gave us his time to appear

on Poacher FM, as well as talk to Charles – our Junior Reporter, and surprise him with the presentation of his PR badge. Wayne was keen to point out that Poacher is great because it “allows everyone to challenge themselves and try something new”, so when we asked
him what he had done to challenge himself recently, he replied: “I tried slack lining. I wasn’t very good and made a massive fool of myself! The worst thing is that there are so many pictures!” Amongst the various visits Wayne made to points around the
cloudy with light rain
site was one to the 1st Molescroft Scout Group, when he took a moment to rest his feet and converse with Scouts who had decided to take a break from the baking midday heat, rest in the shade and reflect on the week so far. As he travelled the site, Wayne was more than happy to stop and pose for photos, as well as sign every piece of paper or necker thrust in his way– including my own (thank you)! Wayne may be a major Scouting celebrity, but he is just a volunteer like so many people here at Poacher; he’s a very down to earth and friendly guy, you might even say he’s still a Cub at heart, as was evidenced by how keen he was to pass by the tuck shop during his Poacher tour! Thanks for visiting Wayne!

Chief Execs’ messages to camp Julie Bentley and Matt Hyde have sent us the following messages following their visit to Poacher yesterday.
Julie (Girlguiding) “Make sure you enjoy the rest of the camp and try everything!” Matt (The Scout Association) “I hope that the rest of the week is fantastic and you make lots of new friends from all over the world. Of course, I hope it doesn’t rain anymore too!”

by Jak WIlliamson & Charles With our international camp well underway, we were extremely lucky here at Poacher to have a special visit from The Scout Association’s UK Chief Commissioner Wayne Bulpitt as a part of his tour of 10 international camps. Wayne’s role as UK Chief Commissioner involves him working closely with Chief Scout Bear Grylls – he is also in charge of the 110,000 adult volunteers and the support system that is in place. Charles, our Junior Reporter, was lucky enough to get this exclusive prime interview with him. Why did you want to be the UK Chief Commissioner? “I feel passionately for how brilliant Scouts and Guides are and want to expand Scouting by getting even

more people joining.” From my research I know that you having been visiting international camp around the UK – clearly you have a busy schedule, how do you fit everything in? “I believe that if you enjoy doing things, you can easily find a way to balance activities together. I also have a really supporting family who help me do things.” What’s the best part of your job? “Coming to events like Poacher is one of my favourite parts.” How many Jamborees have you been to? I have been to two World Scout Jamborees and lots of international Jamborees such as Poacher. Did you get all or most of the badges when you where a Scout?
What advice can you give to Scouts & Guides to achieve a variety of badges? “Have a go at everything! Even if you’re not sure about something, have a go and NEVER be put off. I tried slack lines recently, that was my latest new thing!” What was your favourite activity as a Scout? “Anything boating. I was a Sea Scout so I did it a lot. It is still my favourite activity!” Who has been the most important or favourite person you’ve met? “I don’t particularly have a favourite. Everyone Is different and important in their own way.” Any camp tips or messages for our Poacher campers? “Keep things away from the side of the tent, especially important things when it rains. Also, have a go at everything.”
What are your future hopes for The Scout Association? “That there will be no joining list for Scouting, so we can offer Scouting to absolutely everyone, especially in areas where Scouting currently doesn’t happen.” If you could be any piece of furniture, what would it be? “I would be a chair so that everyone else could relax.” After this exclusive interview, Wayne asked our Junior Reporter about how many badges he had achieved. Unbeknown to Charles, Wayne knew something he didn’t that because of the hard work this week with the Media Centre, he has met the criteria for the PR badge. Charles was totally flabbergasted when Wayne produced the badge from his pocket and presented him with the badge. Charles couldn’t believe it – he said “I am just so happy – this is the best thing ever!!! Thank you so much”. From all of us here at the Media Team, we would like to congratulate Charles on this phenomenal achievement, you should be very proud!
Scout Shops The Scout Shop still has items available for Poacher-goers to buy! Items include iScout woggles for £2.25, t-shirts from £10, and Scout USB wristbands for £9. They have also made a parachute, banner and bunting all with a toy soldier theme. The Guides will be dressing up in their toy solider costumes for closing ceremony – keep an eye out for them!
The Nomad Trust relies on donations to provide food and shelter for the homeless. As some of you may know, the sub camp chiefs on The Spirit of Christmas have been collecting cans of food to cre-
ate a hamper for this cause. However, the sub camp received such a large amount of cans that they couldn’t fit them all in a hamper! Malcolm said “not only do we provide food for the people in our shelters but we also provide breakfast and evening meals for those leaving on the streets. All this food will make a real difference.” He then went on to have a look around the site to see all the fantastic activities you have been doing.

The Book
by Emily Crookes Have you been down to our own Poacher 'Diary Room' yet? In a similar style to Big Brother, 'The Book' allows you to go into a comfy room, kitted out with funky fairy lights and cool air conditioning, to talk about your Poacher experience so far. All the walls are decorated with different questions about life on camp and what you have been up to so you can openly chat about it all, whilst being able to see yourself on the TV screen. Kate, who has been working on 'The Book' team, said “the best thing to do is come along in a group, chat about your amazing experiences at Poacher and most importantly, have fun!”. This is a non-ticketed activity so you are welcome to turn up at any time! While the Scouts and Leaders are out and about having fun at Poacher, they will ‘peg’ people that they see; attaching them to hoodies, t-shirts, neckers, bags and other items of clothing. The idea is that those who have been ‘pegged’ will come and visit their unit so they can receive a

Campfire’s Burning (not really)
by Rebecca Craven Have you ever been to a camp fire that didn't keep you warm? Well that's what the Gadgets and Gizmos sub camp groups did on Wednesday night! The groups met at HQ ready and rearing to sing 'Everywhere we go' en route to the sports field, but the rain
was so heavy, it was decided they would congregate in Cleethorpes' mess tent, and instead sat around a pretend fire in the centre. Spirits were high as songs were belted out though crueler campers might say that’s what caused the rain! The weather cleared enough for the procession to relocate to
the actual camp fire – lovingly made by Michael and Phil of 6th Stamford Scouts out of items they begged for, including a flashing beacon. The highlight was 'Kumbaya' was sung all together, with Guides and Scouts taking it in turns to recite their Promise while the others hummed the tune.

The people behind the scenes by Lewis Simpson
Sandra on Galapagos sub camp
There have been over 200,000 activities done by Scouts and Guides this week at Poacher, but who are the people behind this huge amount of fun? I got a change to talk to Dave from the activities team, who told me, “It’s amazing to see all these happy faces and hoping that they have enjoyed the activities that much that they choose to come back to Poacher to run the activities they’ve enjoyed. “We’ve seen Scouts and Guides doing everything from survival skills to zorbing”. Poacher has seen such a high quality of activities this time and has made it even bigger and
better than ever before, offering such a wide range of things to do. “All the young people camping with us have the ability to try something new everyday”. The team have been working on everything from action projects, crafts and also the opening and closing ceremony. They’ve
not only made it possible for everyone on Poacher to have a fantastic time, but have also helped to better the surrounding community and environment by planning the Action Projects. So the final message from the adventure team is to “go out there and don’t be afraid!”.

Lincs to Minsk Catch Up
by Rebecca Craven At Poacher 1992, Lincolnshire was visited by a group of Belarusian Guides and Phyll Sands (a Leader from Lincolnshire South) had the great idea of keeping in contact with annual visits, with Brits visiting Belarusians one year, and them coming here the next - a project called Lincs to Minsk.

Recently it has been decided that the contact should continue via online methods, a Facebook group has been set up and they talk via Skype, like they did yesterday. Yesterday's conversation got off to a slow start due to the girls being camera shy, and a confusion of which way to look – but
once everyone was relaxed there were giggles all round. Georgia, Faith, Megan and Harriet, who met Alinka, Anya, Dana and Aylar at a camp in Trusthorpe, near Mablethorpe, last year, reminisced about their camp and told each other what they are doing this summer. The Belarusians were interested in what was happening at Poacher so the webcam was lifted up above the Epic Centre balcony and the girls were shown the town of tents as they heard about different activities going on. The Brits also posed for a photo with the Belarusians by huddling together and holding the laptop. When the classic 'cheeeeese' was said by Brits, it was echoed by the laptop a few seconds later, making for laughter all round.
Everyone’s Russian to meet them!
by Daniel Brock Meet the final international contingent to be featured in our daily international meet and greet – the Russians! The girls took a long 6 hour trip to join us at Poacher this week, and will spend the week after Poacher in London, to experience yet more British culture. “We love the UK so far - everyone is so friendly!” they said, “We have really enjoyed all of the activities, especially the water zorbing and archery!” They told us “Everyone is so friendly and it is great because we have so much in common with all of the Scouts and
Guides we have met.”. The group of 3 guides, 1 scout, and 2 leaders has already established a link at Poacher with a Scottish unit who are now planning to visit Russia next year. The group have loved experiencing British culture, but have shared their own culture. They have performed Russian dancing to participants, as well as setting up a small stall on their campsite to showcase Russian culture. If you’d like to sample some Russian treats then pop along to their site, they’re located just across the path from the Toybox sub camp HQ.
Tree Climbing
by Catherine Sharp Scouts and Guides all over Poacher are climbing trees! The Lincoln Scouts Caving Club have set up the Tree Climbing activity and use caving techniques to give participants a taste of caving as well as of climbing.
Participants can use one of two methods to ascend to the lofty boughs of the tree; they can climb up a 'rope' ladder to a tree branch, or they can winch themselves up using the 'single rope techniques'. This caving taster activity has proved popular with the Scouts and Guides and Tree Climbing has a continual flow of people wanting to try it out. A fantastic view of the camp can be seen from the heights of the trees!

Poacher remembers the Battle of Britain
by Catherine Sharp Scouts and Guides have been lucky enough to visit RAF Coningsby and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby! They were able to witness the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and see one of the last three moving Lancaster bombers up close. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight took place yesterday at RAF Coningsby. The participants were able to witness a Lancaster bomber, Spitfires, Hurricanes and Chipmunks flying, as well at the newer planes that fly out of RAF Coningsby. The participants thoroughly enjoyed this because of

by Rebecca Craven Action projects are a popular activity with Poacher-goers. This particular action project saw the kids visit Sudbrooke Park Scout Camp site, just a few miles from the showground.
The group of kids and Leaders were busy raking and cutting away when we arrived and had already made good progress from when they began a couple of hours earlier. We were told that the water had gone from black to blue “it’s very rewarding to see the difference we’re making,” says Andrew from South Holland Scouts, “I’ve been stung on the nose by a nettle!”
The aim of this weeklong project is to dredge the stream in order to prevent anaerobic decomposition – when flowing water becomes thick with sludge and branches/twigs prevent-

by Jak Williamson Here at the paper, we can’t believe how popular the gateway competition has been and you have literally been voting in your hundreds – although we couldn’t cover all the fantastic gates around site, short listing was extremely difficult. We are able to announce the winning gate... and the winner is gate number 1, with well over half of all votes going to Louth District Scouts. A former Louth Scout and local celebrity Rob Hammond, Lincs FM presenter tweeted “I am very proud that my old Scout group have won – a definitely a worthy winner.”
The gate features a Lancaster bomber and a huge Union Flag – obviously the Scouts from Louth drew focused on the locality of Poacher with the home of the bomber being stationed at RAF Conningsby, only 30 miles away from us here at the Showground. Scout Leader, Rob Lynam, said “It’s a fantastic achievement and an honour for Louth District to win out of the whole of Poacher. A lot of hard work has been put into it and we enjoy pioneering projects like this” A very big well done to the Louth District Scouts, and all other entrants!
the close proximity they had to the planes! In the afternoon, the participants went to East Kirkby where they were able to look around an exRAF airfield that had been well preserved and maintained. They were able to see authentic uniforms, both RAF and Nazi, as well as log books, helmets and ammunition. They were also able to try out a flight simulator! They were also able to see ‘Just Jane’, one of the three last Lancaster bombers, within touching distance! The immense size of the plane was very apparent when they were standing next to it.

Aged 1618 these young adults are given the chance to sample what it is like to lead activities. Today’s lucky pair are Lauren and Chloe from Spalding Senior Section.
So, why did you choose to be on the Junior Staff team? Chloe: It sounded different, like a challenge What does your role involve? Lauren: It’s been varied all week, today we’re at the roller disco. We like looking after the kids How long have you been in Guiding? Chloe: About a year, I joined as a Young Leader Lauren: I’ve been in since Rainbows You can be a cake. Which one do you choose?
Chloe: Angel cake Lauren: Chocolate Have there been lots of injuries at the roller disco? Chloe: The most mild was a paper cut and the worst has been a knee injury – he fell on a recovering knee and it locked into place What’s your favourite camp song? Lauren: We haven’t really been singing them, perhaps Yogi Bear. We tend to have the radio on but lately we’ve had the ‘mango song’ in our heads Camp no-no?
Both: Being dirty! Not washing or wearing deodorant is horrible, as is leaving the showers scruffy. How far have you travelled? Both: Not far, from Spalding about and hour and 20 away What’s been your favourite camp moment? Chloe: When our Leader’s boyfriend surprised her at the gate and made her cry – it was lovely. Lauren: Eating a giant chocolate cake!
Meet the Team: The Clowns Danni’s meet and greet today was hotly contested, with numerous teams from around the site clamouring to be today’s team. She chose to meet the Circus team.

Top five tips of the day Today we have been given 5 top tips from Aaron and Charles from 7th Lincoln Scouts. 1) If you want a hot shower, turn the temperature all the way to cold.... apparently it works! 2) Don’t touch the side of the tent this will let water through and make your stuff soggy. 3) Pitch your tent in the shade. This stops the air inside heating up. If you’re not able to, then get a fan! 4) Don’t let crazy scouts into your tent, some times they can break them. 5) Keep your sweets in a good hiding place, it can be very disappointing finding them gone.
Jak’s Daily Camp Joke!
Sherlock and Dr Watson were going camping. They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and said: “Watson, look up at the sky, and tell me what you see.” Watson replied: “I see millions and millions of stars.” Holmes said: “And what do you deduce from that?” Watson replied: “Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some planets like Earth out there. And if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life.” And Holmes said: “Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody stole our tent.”
