The fun

starts here!

weather

Welcome to Poacher! You’re finally here, at Lincolnshire’s very own international Scout and Guide camp, at the Lincolnshire Showground. Our activities team have spent the last three years working away to bring you the largest range of activities that we can at a UK Jamboree, and make sure that there’s something for everyone - whatever you feel like doing! From adventurous activities on land, water and in the air, to creative crafts that make great souvenirs, the range on offer is phenomenal. Don’t forget our environmental action projects, giving you the chance to make a difference in the local area, along with trips to some of the greatest attractions in Lincolnshire, from the castle to the cathedral. The site services team have been here since Monday morning filling the site with toilets, showers, marquees and all the infrastructure that 5000 people will need to live for a week. When the camp is full, there will be more people with us than the nearby town of Horncastle. Every camper is allocated a selection of tickets at the start of the week, and you can swap them with your mates throughout the week. Enjoy the opening ceremony tonight, take part in as many activities as you can, and make loads of new friends!

Opening Ceremony

Once you’ve set up camp, had your evening meal and are all settled in, it’s time for the Opening Ceremony - a time to declare Poacher officially open, and celebrate in style! All groups need to be ready in full uniform by 6.30pm and make their way to their Sub Camp HQs to begin their short journey into the main arena in the centre of the showground. Please wear waterproofs if it’s raining! Evening entertainment continues across the site into the night, so you can celebrate the opening and party! Evening ents finish at 9.30pm and lights out at 11!

Vehicles

All vehicles should be removed from the main site and relocated into the car parking areas by 4pm. The Poacher 2013 site has a strict ‘no vehicles’ policy for both environmental and safety reasons, with the exception of the medical team and essential site services, such as waste removal. Thank you for your co-operation.

Forgot your pillow? No need to worry! Simply take your sleeping bag sack and fill with clothes! Keep your sweets in a sealed container to make sure your tent isn’t invaded by insects. Wash! No one likes a smelly camper! Don’t spray aerosol in your tent. Make at least one new friend every day. Don’t forget to wear sun cream and drink plenty of fluids. Keep your Scouts and Guides on a lead and clean up after them! Try something new every day. Listen to Poacher FM! Have fun!!!

Tables turned on the media team

SMILEY HAPPY PEOPLE: Kirsty Thorpe, video team leader, Christopher Smith, media team leader, Becky Lee, photographer and Liam Shaw, radio team member were all grilled by the newspaper team for this special feature by Emily Crookes Becky Lee What’s your role on the Media Team? I am a photographer. I will be covering all the activities and interesting things going on around Poacher. What are you most looking forward to about Poacher? Taking some good pictures and having a great time! If you were a flavour of ice cream, what would you be and why? Any flavour of Ben and Jerry’s – just because they are really nice. If you could meet a celebrity, dead or alive, who would it be? I would like to meet Don McCullen, a photojournalist, who mainly covered wars. Kirsty Thorpe What’s your role on the Media Team? My role is Head of Video. We cover the events going on, the taster days and a different type of activity each day. We plan to upload these videos on YouTube in the evenings.

What are you most looking forward to about Poacher? I just love Poacher, everything about it - the banter, making new friends, becoming like a little happy family.

If you were any type of drink what would you be and why? Sprite because it’s bubbly and refreshing.

What is the most embarrassing thing you have done on camp? I have a tendency to trip up and fall over a lot.

Christopher Smith What’s your role on the Media Team? I look after the Media Team and make sure that everybody on Poacher gets to know about everything going on.

If you could have any pet, what animal would it be and what would you call it? A guinea pig called Floppy or Fluffy. Liam Shaw What’s your role on the Media Team? I am part of Poacher FM as one of the presenters, with the breakfast show. What are you most looking forward to about Poacher? I’m looking forward to gaining experience through Poacher FM but also meeting new people and drinking lots of coffee. What is your favourite song at the moment? ‘Shi No Barado’ by Area 11

What are you most looking forward to about Poacher? I’m most looking forward to capturing and sharing the memories of people from all over the world. Hopefully, people will keep these Wnewspapers forever and they will be really nice souvenirs. If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why? I wouldn’t be a carrot – because I can’t see in the dark! What is your funniest joke? What do you call dinosaur who knows lots of words? – A thesaurus.

Gladrags are going on a bear hunt

We asked our fans on Facebook what they were most looking forward to about Poacher - this is what they told us!

GLADRAGS

Ashleigh Lacey: Meeting new friends and my first camp ever

Katie Trevor: My leader’s face when she sees all my luggage :) Diane Hutchinson: Having brought my daughter since 2000 - she finally gets to take part as a Guide and do everything she has watched the girls do Carol Ferro: The fact my son and husband are going for the week, leaving me and my daughter to a nice peaceful week! Alisdair Ferro: The fact Carol (my wife) and daughter are not going for the week, leaving me and my son to a great week at Poacher :)

by Daniel Brock Starting Sunday – The Raggy Hunt! Think you’re good at hide and seek? Ever wanted to go on a bear hunt? Raggy the bear is hiding around the Poacher site, can you find him? He’ll have two different hiding places that change every day. Whoever can mark the

most hiding places on the map will win a very special prize! Starting Sunday and ending Friday. Good luck to all! May the challenge begin… During camp, why not come and meet Edith – Gladrags nolonger-legless fashion icon! She might even pose for a pic!

As well as visiting Edith, why not come to Silly Sports Sunday. The fun starts at 6pm and continues until 7:30pm. Don’t forget your wellies! Remember to bring your personalised Group t-shirts so we can hang them on our line!

Food, glorious food - lots of it!

FOOD MOUNTAINS: Splodge Supermarket has all the food you could ever eat!

There are nearly 6000 hungry mouths to feed all week at Poacher, - no small order! So, to make sure you’re all fed, watered and happy, the team at the Poacher warehouse have been taking in tons of food, whether that be provisions for the Bistro, Staff Catering, or the Splodge Supermarket. Splodge Supermarket is open every day from 7am - 7pm. You can order in provisions for your group, which will be ready for collection at your chosen time, with provisions also available throughout the week.

Beanz Cleanz: Having my child enjoying himself and realising that there is life away from his x box and laptop :) Simon Thornhill: Meeting old and new friends

Paul Denton: Seeing my group stood at the opening ceremony with new matching group t-shirts and Xmas hats! By this point I will know that the months of planning, late nights getting everything together, ordering, collecting, borrowing, fetching, buying, making, testing, packing, travelling and finally pitching camp will be over! Although every second will be worth to see Silkstone Scouts enjoy their week at Poacher.

Watch out for our roaming reporters around Poacher this week and be sure to tell them what you think!

Book for your group photo Our photography team will be kept busy at Poacher 2013 - as well as capturing hundreds of memories from all over the site (and beyond!) throughout the week, they will also be able to take group photos within your subcamp area, for you to keep forever. Come to the media centre - on the Epic Centre balcony by the side of the main arena - and choose a slot, and we’ll send a photographer over to you. Your photos will be available for viewing, selection and purchase at the media centre sales point the next day. • All printed photos are 8x6 with a limited edition mount, and are £3.00 each, or 4 for £10.

Through the looking glass In a Jamboree first, Poacher 2013 will be linked with thousands more Scouts and Guides from around the world via a video link. The JORTAL project creates a virtual video link between us at Poacher and the campers at Kent International Jamboree, near Maidstone. The screen is running all week, on the balcony outside the media centre, so pop by and say hello!

Time for you to take over! Not only are we bringing you more media outlets than ever, at Poacher 2013 we’re even letting you join in the fun! On Poacher FM, ‘The Takeover’ runs from 1pm - 3pm from Sunday to Friday, where we let groups of three take to the air for your own 15 minute mini-show! We’ll give you all the music you need, and help you shape a schedule to be proud of! If photography is more your thing, then we’re introducing a limited number of slots for the ‘Photo Takeover’. Every morning from Sunday to Friday a couple of our photography experts will take five of you out for an hour shooting the best of Poacher - first come first served! • To book a slot, visit the media centre. Slots will be offered throughout the week. You must arrive on time or your slot may be offered to another group who are waiting. Printed by Iliffe Print Cambridge Milton, Cambridgeshire, CB24 6PP
