The Gin and Tonic has been the Polo Players’ choice™ of refreshment for over 150 years, since the first polo match involving British Officers in 1859; hence the creation of British Polo Gin®. Made in honour of the first ever polo in England, held at the Hurlingham Club in 1869, our fourth delicious gin offering has proudly been released to coincide with the 150th anniversary of this prestigious date. Our long awaited Strawberry & Rose gin is made from our Classic Gin with added strawberry juice and rose botanicals. There are no added sugars in this gin resulting in a spectacularly aromatic gin that critically is not overpoweringly sweet, as some flavoured gins on the market tend to be. Based on the polo player with the most control and finesse, No.4; this gin really does deliver the taste of a Great British Summer. Serve with Elderflower Tonic and a slice of tangy lime for the ultimate new age G&T. The red colour comes of this gin directly from the 100% natural strawberry juice that we use to create our delicious Strawberry & Rose Gin.

from the Publisher With polo in the UK having finished several weeks ago, the English 2021 summer season has literally flown by. The many ‘highs’ eclipsed the very few ‘lows’, and all told, as has been reported in recent issues of Polo Times, polo firmly made its mark, reasserting itself that, with or without restrictions, polo was here to stay. Having enjoyed watching the polo pitch-side this year, with the warm autumn sun still streaming into my office as I write, I feel compelled to ask, “Is it just me who feels that polo finishes too early nowadays?” Accepting that no one likes change, least not governing bodies, I personally champion that we need to accept what the changing climate delivers: April is invariably too wet to play on the grass when the season should be starting, yet early October, provides the most perfect conditions, but yet is when the outdoor season has already finished. For our part, Polo Times is happy to run a ‘straw poll’ on this idea… if you agree, please drop us a quick email: editorial@ polotimes.co.uk As the October issue of Polo Times was being put to bed, the HPA’s Ollie Hughes was about to run the Manchester Marathon, raising money for two charities whose work aims to prevent male suicides, Papyrus (www.papyrus-uk.org) and James’ Place (www.jamesplace.org.uk). Having played Pony Club Polo, both with and against Ollie in the 80s when we were in our teens, I do not recall either of us running anywhere, so I have to commend Ollie for now putting on his running shoes for two such worthy causes. Polo Times looks forward to reporting on the marathon epic in a forthcoming issue. Whilst this issue hopefully provides a full ‘wrap’ of the 2021 English season, and shines a spotlight ahead to the 2021/22 season overseas, it is with incredible sadness that we include an obituary for Momin Sheikh who sadly passed away at just 57. Mo was a true gentleman in every sense of the word, both on and off the field, and polo is all the poorer for having lost another of its stalwarts. Our thoughts go to Mo’s wife, Sapna, and the wider Sheikh family. Enjoy the read, be kind, on and off the field, and – as always – play safe. Nick Hine, Publisher

Post-Brexit Right to Work On Tuesday 31 August, the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) released an announcement and links from the Home Office regarding the checking of EU workers’ right to work following Brexit: The temporary provisions in place to allow for manual right to work checks to be completed remotely during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic were due to end on 31 August 2021. These adjusted right to work checks will now be extended to 5 April 2022. These adjustments mean that for carrying out manual right to work checks: • checks can currently be carried out over video calls • job applicants and existing workers can send scanned documents or a photo of documents for checks using email or a mobile app, rather than sending originals • employers should use the Employer Checking Service if a prospective or existing employee cannot provide any of the accepted documents Checks continue to be necessary and you must continue to check the prescribed documents set out in right to work checks: an employer’s guide or use the online right to work checking service. It remains an offence to knowingly employ anyone who does not have the right to work in the UK.

Argentine Legends Return This season sees a new tournament announced by the Argentine Association of Polo (AAP) – The Legends Cup. The tournament aims to welcome top players from previous years back to the polo field to show their talent, players such as Milo Fernández Araujo, the brothers and cousins Heguy or Alejandro Díaz Alberdi will be part of the first edition of the Legends Cup, this new series of competitions that involves players over 45 and players over 40. The first two tournaments will be played between 19 – 24 October and 23 – 30 October, with each team needing to reach at least 190 years between its four players. The AAP has appointed a new Sub-Committee made up of Milo Fernández Araujo, Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Bautista and Eduardo Heguy, Alejandro Díaz Alberdi, Justo Saavedra and Gonzalo Azumendi to evaluate the individuals after the team registrations to ensure parity between them.

AAP Reaches 99th Year Milestone On Tuesday 14 September, the Argentine Polo Association (AAP) celebrated its first 99 years. The AAP was founded in 1922 after the merging of the River Plate Polo Association (1892) and the National Polo Federation (1921) on the opening day of the Argentine Open Championships that year, which were held at the Hurlingham Club. In 1927, in conjunction with the leaders of the War Horse Commission, they ordered the construction of the famous fields 1 and 2 of Palermo, inaugurated in 1928, which became theatres of world conquests and historical records that made it win the nickname of the World Polo Cathedral. www.polotimes.co.uk

Coming soon ... Polo Educational Program

g’s udwi

From my 40-plus-year experience of teaching polo, I have developed an educational program that will help you improve your game. My efforts at teaching polo have not been to make improvement easy, but to make it certain. Within this educational program, my intention is the same. Regardless of your playing experience or handicap rating, this program is the tool that can help you achieve improvement. Consider, when you are playing the polo horse more efficiently, hitting the 12 shots of polo with more consistent accuracy and executing the strategy of the game more effectively, other players will be wondering how you did it and want to be the polo player you have become. This instructional package contains: 1. Four books of approximately 100 pages each A. An Overview B. The Polo Style of Riding C. Mechanics of Hitting D. Executing the Strategy 2. Approximately 25 booklets of about 10 pages each, describing how to hit each one of the 12 shots of polo. The other booklets describe how to most effectively ride, control and play the polo horse. 3. Approximately 25 videos demonstrating what is described in the booklets

The instructional package will be available for purchase in early 2022.

News Obituary Momin Sheikh December 1963 – September 2021

Photograph by ©www.imagesofpolo.com

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Mo Sheikh, a well-respected and long-standing playing patron, has died at the age of 57-years-old. Mo was familiar to so many through his range of competitive polo teams. Mo achieved much success in polo, especially at Guards Polo Club. He added his name to some coveted trophies including the Duke of Cornwall, the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary, the Duke of Wellington, the Autumn Nations Tournament and the Town & County Championship. He was also successful in raiding Cowdray Park’s trophy locker, registering wins in the Holden White Cup and Dollar Cup in past seasons. This patron’s love of polo also saw him create an opportunity for the next generation of players. Alongside his brother, Amar, they created The Copenhagen Cup schools tournament at Guards Polo Club. This competition allows the polo-playing schools to compete competitively on the top-quality grounds at Smith’s Lawn, delivering an unprecedented opportunity for student players. Mo will always be remembered as a true gentleman of the sport who contributed a great deal to so many. Ever-smiling, immaculately presented and always ‘flat out’ on the pitch is the way many will recall him. The extended polo community send their deepest condolences to Mo’s wife, Sapna, their children and the wider Sheikh family. Mo’s funeral was a private occasion and Guards Polo Club will host a memorial service to this much-loved patron at Smith’s Lawn in the near future. He will be missed by so many. May he rest in peace.

There are not many sports where three generations can all compete together, on the same team, simultaneously, but polo allows just that. On Wednesday 15 September, the R&R team took to the field for their match in The Associates Trophy at Cirencester Park Polo Club, against OKL Equestrian; but this was not any ordinary team as it featured not one but three generations in the same team – left to right in the picture are Nina Clarkin, sister Tamara Fox, their mother Rosie Vestey and Elizabeth, Nina’s daughter. w Photograph by John Hankin

Victor Ludorum 2021 Series

2021 Series Culminates With the door to September 2021 firmly closed and autumn firmly upon us, it is time to bid farewell to another Victor Ludorum series. This year saw a plethora of teams playing at a variety of clubs across the country, from Rutland to Cowdray and Druids Lodge to Beaufort Polo Clubs, there is something for everyone with 4 goal up to the 22 goal. Cowdray Park Polo Club rounded off this year’s series with The Autumn Cup Final on Sunday 19 August, which saw yet another win for Ojo Caliente, securing them the 12 goal title.

n impressive fourteen teams entered the final 12 goal tournament of the Club’s season, The Autumn Cup, also part of the HPA Victor Ludorum series. Christian Staubach’s Bamboleo/Madams Farm and Ana Escobedo’s Ojo Caliente met in the Final. Having won the Cup in both 2019 and 2020, Ojo Caliente were in pursuit of the hat trick. Conceding half a goal on handicap due to Glenn Sherriff substituting for injured Chris MacKenzie, Ojo Caliente quickly took control of the game, outshooting Bamboleo/Madams Farm six to zero in the opening chukka. Jonny Good opened the scoring on an uncontested run to goal with all three teammates effectively keeping the defence away from him as he ran the ball in. John Paul Clarkin led the early attack for Ojo Caliente, contributing one goal and an assist, while helping Ojo Caliente carry their momentum through the rest of the first half. Unable to convert on their only field shot and penalty shot attempt, Bamboleo/Madams Farm saw their deficit grow as a relentless Ojo Caliente team continued to push forward. Clarkin added two more tallies, while Zac Beim completed the impressive first half, leaving Ojo Caliente with a commanding 5-½ advantage. 14

Ojo Caliente, winners of The Autumn Cup & the vL 12 Goal

With two chukkas standing between them and victory, Ojo Caliente’s defence kept Bamboleo/Madams Farm away from goal, creating turnovers to begin their counterattack. Clarkin and Jonny Good extended their team’s consecutive goal streak to seven for the seemingly unstoppable Ojo Caliente team. Nick Johnson finally put an end to the run in the third chukka, receiving a long pass and sending it through the posts for Bamboleo/Madams Farm’s first goal of the match. However, it was a brief reprieve from an outstanding Ojo Caliente performance as Good completed the victory with two goals in the final chukka to secure the 9-21/2 win. The X-Zony Best Playing Pony rug was presented to Centrickle, owned and played by John Paul Clarkin, who was also awarded the Most Valuable Player prize. Earlier in the day, Ferne Park narrowly defeated Vendetta 5-4 in the Subsidiary Final, led by two goals each from Joaquin Pittaluga and Louis Hine. Taking an early 3-0 advantage in the first chukka, Ferne Park struggled with their shooting accuracy in the remainder of the game, converting just one of their final eight shot attempts. Vendetta’s comeback attempt was led by two goals from Matt Perry, but they ultimately fell one goal short in the 5-4 defeat.

ix teams competed in this year’s FIP European Championship (Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Italy and Germany), which due to the pandemic were moved from their original location in Azerbaijan to Spain, with the Real Federación Española de Polo, Ayala Polo Club and Minuto 7 all working together to organise The FIP XIII European Championship. The event takes place every two years and continues to grow in popularity, with the proximity of competing teams allowing for many players to bring their own horses, which of course raises the playing quality. The Championship title was first played for in 1993 in St. Moritz, Switzerland, with England currently holding the most number of wins with six. Following a week of action between the six teams, it was Italy and Austria who took

Before the Final, Spain and the Netherlands went headto-head for the La Reserva Cup to decide third and fourth place; the match ended with a convincing 10-4 victory for the home team, Spain. Italy had secured their place in the Final following their 5-3 victory against the Netherlands in the Semi Finals, whilst Austria surprised everyone in the Semi Final by defeating the home team, Spain, 6-5. Following a closely fought first chukka with the scores tied at 1-1, Italy managed to begin to pull ahead with a two goal difference opening up in the second chukka, meaning they led 3-1 going into half-time. Despite Austria’s best efforts, Italy were able to maintain their lead through strong defensive plays and ran out the winners, 6-5. www.polotimes.co.uk

ix teams between 30 and 34 goals entered the 56th Jockey Club Open Thai Polo Cup, which saw the tournament organised by Harald Link’s Thai Polo, with the support of Minuto Siete Polo, and the tournament was hosted at its iconic home – The Jockey Club in San Isidro. Before the Final between La Ensenada and La Hache, there was a minute’s silence in memory of Miguel Pío Uriburu, an outstanding personality of The Jockey Club. La Hache got off to a flying start and by the end of the first chukka had secured themselves a 4-1 lead, which they managed to sustain throughout the first half. It was not until the last three chukkas that La Ensenada really found their rhythm and managed to take the lead on the scoreboard. By the sixth chukka, the goals were flying in thick and fast for La Ensenada, with Barto Castagnola – later named Most Valuable Player – making his mark for the young side. La Hache attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh chukka, scoring three goals in quick succession, until La Ensenada’s Alfredo Bigatti stopped their progress in its tracks, with the youthful team ultimately securing themselves a 17-12 win.

fter their 2020 event was postponed due to the pandemic, The British Beach Polo Championships 2021 (Sandpolo) hosted their 14th event slightly later in the year than usual (the event is usually held in July), but the weather gods were smiling as the sell-out crowds enjoyed the Indian Summer sunshine on Sandbanks Blue Flag Beach. Excitingly, this year also saw the organisers announce U.S. Polo Assn. as apparel partner for the event in collaboration with U.K. licensing partner Brand Machine Group. Both teams were evenly matched, but it was the success of the strong teamwork from team Whispering Angel that took the British Beach Championships 2021 title with a 19-14 victory against Team Lightening Commercial Finance. Whispering Angel’s Adolfo Casabal not only scooped up the Most Valuable Player award, but also secured success in the spectacular charity race with his polo pony racing across the sand against an Audi Q7. The after-parties, always a big highlight at the event, did not disappoint and the celebratory mood was heightened after a year away; party goers enjoyed the beach backdrop at Friday’s Boogie on the Beach and there was an electric atmosphere at Saturday’s Gold closing party. Sandpolo Director, Johnny Wheeler commented, “It is nothing short of a miracle that all of the infrastructure supplies event staff, security and players delivered this perfect event given the initial uncertainty we always had – we never quite knew we could pull it off until the last minute but it all came together. A perfect finale to the Summer season”.

The concluding tournament of the season for the coveted Billy Walsh Cup was hotly contested by six teams this year. The competition was spread over two weekends, culminating with the Finals day on 12 September. So it was that, on this warm late-summer day, Benn Shepherd’s Oriflamme and Abi Anderson’s Avengers found themselves stepping out onto the turf to vie for the trophy. The match started with Oriflamme a man down, Jason Warren having received a double yellow card in the last 30 seconds of the previous match. This meant he had a further spell to serve in the ‘sin bin’ before he could The Billy Walsh Cup finalists join the game. Segundo Darritchon, filling in for Juan Cruz Araya, wasted no time in pressing the advantage, scoring three goals by the end of the chukka. Oriflamme recovered with two goals from Will Penfold in the second. But the second half was dominated by the young partnership of Darritchon and Logan Anderson, and although Warren and Penfold fought hard, with some moments of brilliance from patron Shepherd, the order was too tall, Avengers running out winners 8-3½.

FIP Women’s European Championships

Italy Snatch Half Goal Win FIP Women’s European Championships Nina Clarkin Reports

T

eam England and their ponies pulled up to La Mimosa Polo Club late Sunday night after a long journey with many COVID related border delays and started their preparations for the third FIP Women’s European Championships. First up for the English team was Team Ireland who came out all guns blazing and really threw down the gauntlet and put England on the defensive from the start. England rallied well and after half time, stemmed the Irish flow and the final score of 7½-3 did not reflect the hard work and effort that England put in. There were many missed opportunities and England struggled to convert their frequent runs to goal. A disappointed England crew were treated to supper at the Team hotel by Nick Moffat, team sponsor and owner

of Moorgate Capital, and the team enjoyed delicious homemade pasta, some questionable fizzy rose (not the players!), and the best banana cake anyone had ever eaten.” An early start on day two to prep the ponies was followed by a breakfast meeting to watch videos and talk tactics surrounded by the resident owl, a gaggle of geese, two parrots and a blackbird. England were up against Italy and came out firing on all cylinders. Italy started with a 2½ goal lead but England had quashed that lead within the first three minutes and were 2½-2 by the end of the first chukka. The format for this tournament is six 4½ minute chukkas and England looked set to dominate throughout. Unfortunately for the Italians Constanza Marchiorello fell and broke her ankle at the end of the third chukka and she was taken to hospital and a replacement was found. After an hour’s delay and a long wait for another ambulance, England re-took to the field with a 4-3½ lead but slightly struggled to find their previous form. The lead bounced between the countries with England

trailing by ½ a goal with a minute to go. A fantastic near side backhand by Emma Wood found Heloise Wilson-Smith who roared to goal. The Italians fought her and hooked Heloise before she could convert but Milly Hughes was in the perfect position to score the goal and take England into the lead, moments before the final bell struck. England looked to have found their form but now faced Germany in the Semi Final who were fantastic in their game against Ireland. Day three, England were treated to a trip to Milan where they took in the sights and enjoyed a trip to the fashion hub, which is the centre of Milan fashion week, and they met some designers and were treated to tours of their collections. After this they had a delicious lunch in Milan and went to the Duomo for a team photo shoot in the most spectacular surroundings. The team then partook in a local tradition which involved standing on a mosaic of a bull, specifically his testicles with their heels, and spinning three times for good luck before heading home for some R and R at the hotel. Day four saw England up against Germany in the Semi Final and they once again came out in fighting form and took an early lead of 3-0. The German team played well but could not convert their penalties and this allowed England to dominate the game and they fought off a last minute comeback by the Germans to win 4-2. Fran Townsend played a blinder and marked her man well out of the match and made some crucial passes.

Italy clinched the win by half a goal

FIP Women’s European Championships Finals day was mired by a terrible forecast so the Final was set for 9am. At 8.45 the heavens opened and lightening lit up the sky and we were called for a meeting to discuss our options. After deciding to wait until midday to make a decision on whether we would hit penalties there was a miraculous break in the weather and it was all stations go to play before the weather set in again. Heavy rain made the pitch hard going but it stood up remarkably well considering.

England again started well and took an early lead of 3-1½ with a cracking goal from Heloise Wilson Smith and two solid penalties by Emma Wood. Milly Hughes worked tirelessly on Camilla Rossi and created space for Heloise and Emma to attack the Italian goal. The Italians clawed their way back with some good penalties and scored a good running goal to take the lead 4-4½. England lost some momentum towards the end of the fourth and some bad luck and tricky conditions allowed the Italians to take the lead 6 ½-4. England rallied impressively in the sixth with Emma and Heloise combining beautifully to score and Milly Hughes slotted one from 60 yards out to keep all our hopes and dreams alive. Sadly, time was not on our side and the slow field meant the Italians managed to hold their lead and denied England the goal to win it. A valiant effort by England against a strong Italian team made for a great game displaying some fantastic skills despite the tough conditions. Heloise Wilson Smith won MVP of the tournament and Fran Townend won The Sportsmanship award. It was a long road to the finals and the England Team could not have done it

Nutrition Focus

Lorna Edgar – specialist equine nutritionist

No Foot, No Horse!

The health of the hoof is an extension of the health of the horse, when overall health is compromised, hoof health is often negatively affected. How often do the farriers get a little fed up with shoes coming off during the summer when polo is busy? Before we blame the farrier and question how well is he putting on the shoes, we might just have to take a little responsibility and look a little closer to home first.

Considering the effect of nutrition on our horses’ feet

Why? Polo ponies are generally fed in the summer months when in work and very often they are fed a lot of concentrate feed, so, by the time the foot growth reaches the area for shoes to be fitted it is the end of the season or they are turned out for their winter holiday, therefore what the pony is eating over the winter is more likely to determine hoof integrity during the summer. How can we help? Research has shown that a balance of good quality proteins, vitamins and minerals aid hoof growth and integrity, so maintaining a balanced diet all year round is necessary to ensure this happening.

Photography by Aaron Tyler dip WCF

Nutrition is essential to proper hoof growth

The old saying “No foot, no horse”, is absolutely true to its word, and something I feel, is over-looked when we consider the nutrition of our horses. Too often we reach for a supplement to solve a problem that has occurred four to six months before, and will take four to six months to recover again, rather than considering what the horse is eating that may affect its feet. When on a yard visit, particularly a yard that is new to me and I am not familiar with the management and set up, I stand back and look at each horse as an individual – taking in conformation, muscle development, body condition, skin and coat condition, legs and then absolutely, the feet! 48

Polo Times, October 2021

The feet can tell me what possible nutritional changes have occurred in the diet over the last few months, and in the polo pony, this is often indicative in the dietary changes that occur in the autumn and spring – being turned out and again when they come back into work in the spring. Are the feet smooth, or do they have lots of ridges, or perhaps one big ridge/ring in all four feet? Are there cracks or do they look weak and crumbling? Rings/ridges on all four feet can be indicative of sudden/drastic changes in the diet, such as turn out over winter when hard feed suddenly stops and coming back into work when hard feed is fed again.

Energy The horse, like humans, requires energy for all basic body functions, including the digestion and utilisation of nutrients in its feed, and to help sustain the growth and development of tissues, including the hoof wall. If the horse does not have sufficient energy to fully utilise the supplement or feed, it will not be able to reap the benefits. A Balance – All Year Round It is as simple as maintaining a balanced diet all year round to ensure healthy hoof growth without the need for supplementation. What can we do? • Feed a balanced diet all year round • Provide at least a Paddock/Field Licks during winter turnout • Don’t rely on grass alone to provide a balanced diet in the autumn/winter months – nutritional values deplete considerably and lacks good quality protein, vitamins and minerals • Provide good quality hay/haylage to substitute grass • Don’t give out to your farrier until you have looked at what you do!

www.polotimes.co.uk

Nutrition Focus

Inadequate nutrition can lead to poor hoof growth

Knowledge

Aaron Taylor works wonders on foot care

What are those key nutrients we consider with hoof health? Biotin – (also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H) has a lot of emphasis put on it when considering foot health, however, biotin alone, is not enough to correct poor hoof quality, it is however one of many essential nutrients required by the horse for hoof integrity. • What is Biotin? • It is a sulphur-containing B vitamin which plays a part in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism • It also helps maintain healthy skin & hooves and functions as a co-enzyme • Horses manufacture B vitamins in the large intestine during the breakdown of fibre, and the absorption of these vitamins, plus those obtained from a well-balanced diet, usually provides adequate levels for the horse • Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, so is not stored in the body, it is either used by the body cells or excreted in the urine meaning it is difficult for it to become toxic when fed in larger quantities. Protein – is an essential nutrient which is vital for correct and healthy hoof formation. The hoof wall is comprised predominantly of the protein keratin, so not providing sufficient dietary protein can negatively affect hoof health and condition. Protein is made up of amino acids which can be divided into two groups; those

that the horse can produce sufficient amounts of itself and those which have to be supplied in the diet and are referred to as “essential”. Methionine is one of the essential amino acids important in the make-up of keratin so a shortfall in the diet may lead to poor hoof growth. Vitamins & Minerals – are essential in the diet, but over supplementing can be as detrimental as underfeeding, and again thinking of the polo pony, it will often swing from an ‘all or nothing diet’. Equally, supplementing with one key mineral, rather than a balance, will lead to an imbalance and can cause deficiencies of other minerals which may be “tied up” by the one in excess. • Key vitamins & minerals in hoof nutrition include: • Calcium – Key mineral in bone development and structure • Zinc – Plays a role in carbohydrate & protein metabolism as well as being a component of an enzyme responsible for collagen synthesis • Manganese – Important in the skeletal make-up as well as being a major component of cartilage • Copper – Significant in bone and connective tissue formation • Vitamins A and E – have an important role in tissue growth & strength.

Now or Never

Lateral clavicle fracture treatment

Shoulder panorama X-ray to control the symmetry in a standing position

The upper extremity is the hot spot for injuries in polo. It’s either the fall from height with the outstretched arm or the direct landing on the shoulder, which leads to an overload of the collarbone. When this impact happens, the clavicle is the inelastic restraint against upward or forward forces. The clavicle serves also as a strut connecting the upper extremity to the appendicular skeleton. Fluid scapula-thoracic motion is dependent on a stable relationship between the distal clavicle and the scapula. This stability is provided by the acromioclavicular (AC) joint capsule, AC ligaments, and coraco-clavicular (CC) ligaments.

50

Polo Times, October 2021

The clavicle also serves as an important origin and site of insertion for several muscles involved in motion of the shoulder and the cervical spine, including the sternocleidomastoid, anterior deltoid, and trapezius. Depending on the fracture pattern, these muscles can create deforming forces. Most clavicle fractures heal without difficulty and good shoulder function returns. However radiographic non-union after distal clavicle fracture has been reported in 10 per cent to 44 per cent of patients. So, the question is which injury needs repair and when is the right time to return to play and fully load the shoulder.

Mechanics of injury

Most distal clavicle fractures are the result of a fall onto the distal clavicle or a direct blow to it. Direct impact occurs at the acromion, usually with the arm in an adducted position, and force is transmitted through the AC joint to the CC ligaments and the distal clavicle. Associated injuries should be ruled out, such as other injuries to the shoulder girdle, rib fracture, ipsilateral upper extremity injury, and injury to the thorax or cervical spine. These are particularly likely to occur in conjunction with high-energy mechanisms as falls from the horse.

Treatment

Distal clavicle fractures, which involve displacement, are associated with the highest incidence of non-union. Nonsurgical and surgical management provide mostly similar results. The decision whether to operate may be influenced by the amount of fracture displacement and the individual demands of the patient. Surgical options to achieve bony union include transacromial wire fixation, use of a tension band, screw fixation, plating, and arthroscopy. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages; insufficient evidence exists to demonstrate that any one technique consistently provides the best results.

Classification of lateral clavicle fractures

Diagnostics

Clinical Examination Players with distal clavicle fractures typically present with shoulder pain. Physical examination findings include swelling, ecchymosis, and tenderness over the distal clavicle, as well as painful active and passive range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder. Fracture displacement may cause the proximal fragment to tent the skin, with an appearance similar to that of AC joint separation. Impaired sensation resulting from swelling or injury to the supraclavicular nerves are common. Neurologic examination of the shoulder and upper extremity should be performed and documented. Weakness on external rotation with the arm in adduction and disproportionate reports

of pain could be indicative of a nerve injury. Careful examination of the remainder of the upper extremity, as well as the cervical spine and the thorax, is essential. Radiographic Evaluation Basic radiographic evaluation should be executed when the clinical examination is revealing deformity or on-going pain. These X-Rays include different angles to views of the shoulder, which is helpful in evaluating for intra-articular involvement. A radiograph showing the bilateral clavicles and including the AC joint is useful in assessing fracture displacement. These radiographs can provide an overall assessment of fracture pattern, location, and displacement.

Non-Surgical Treatment Most distal clavicle fractures are managed non-surgically. Sling immobilisation for two weeks is instituted for comfort, and shoulder motion is initiated as soon as the initial pain improves. Pain management is essential. Repeat radiographs are obtained at six week follow-up to monitor for fracture displacement and evidence of healing. Some of the fractures are at risk of delayedonset symptomatic AC arthritis, which can be managed with distal clavicle resection, if necessary. However, the likelihood of subsequent displacement and possible non-union should be recognized, discussed with the player, and monitored with repeat radiographs or MRI. Surgical Treatment A variety of methods of surgical management of distal clavicle fractures has been proposed. Wire fixation, use of a tension band, screw fixation, plate fixation, and arthroscopic treatment. Transacromial fixation supplemented with ligament repair or reconstruction has also been shown to improve results and decrease complications. No single surgical technique has been shown to be superior to the others.

Recommendations

Full initial assessment with X-Ray and MRI is key to clarify if a surgical intervention is being superior and indicated or if conservative treatment is more likely to restore natural movement of the shoulder. Gradual loading of the shoulder after injury is key even if complete bone healing is not fully achieved – good to very good shoulder function is possible. Early MRI can detect additional tendinous or ligamentous injuries which may prolong recovery.

Playing Tips

Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Offside Fore Powerhouse

Generating power within the offside fore shot Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game Relative to hitting the offside fore shot with power, I share with you an experience from which I gained tremendously while conducting a penalty lesson with Carlos Gracida. Before starting the lesson, I explained to Carlos my theory about there being two forms of upper body rotation from which to develop power within the offside fore shot. I started out explaining how the torso should lean right and rotate clockwise, or laterally, to put the player out and over the ball. Then the player should rotate their shoulders vertically around their spine to create torsion, or twisting, within their torso. Because the player’s shoulders are rotating vertically, and parallel, to the horse’s spine; that torsion, or twisting, creates the power with which to swing the mallet down. Before I could get any further into my explanation, Carlos said, “When I want to hit an offside fore shot with power, I concentrate on pointing my left shoulder down toward the ball. My mind immediately started processing that thought. “Wow, that is so simple; why did I not think of that. If you want to rotate your right shoulder back and up for the purpose of generating power; rotate your left shoulder forward and down toward the ball”.

I remember telling Carlos, “Wow, this is great; I now know what to tell students who want to hit the offside fore shot harder, “Do like Carlos Gracida, point your left shoulder down toward the ball. Pointing your left shoulder down toward the ball facilitates pulling your right shoulder back, lifting it up, and rotating it within the shoulder socket. And, those three things help in generating the power you will need to hit the offside fore shot hard. The fact of the matter is, the more power you want to generate, the more you should rotate your left shoulder down toward the ball, to facilitate pulling your right shoulder back, lifting it up, and rotating it within your shoulder socket for the purpose of generating that greater power.”

Coincidentally, your right arm and shoulder are positioned to initiate the downswing of the offside fore shot. The difference between polo and baseball is: when swinging the polo mallet, your torso is rotated laterally and is bending down and over the ball, which will have you swinging, or throwing, the mallet down; as compared to the more vertical and forward facing throwing position of a baseball player. However, the arm and shoulder mechanics of swinging a polo mallet and throwing a baseball are close to identical. As the mechanics of the polo swing would have it, the farther down you point your left shoulder toward the ball; the greater the degree to which you can pull your right shoulder back, lift it up and rotate it within the shoulder socket; thereby, you are increasing the power with which you can execute the downswing of the offside fore shot. A reasonable degree of vertical shoulder rotation for the offside fore shot is when your left shoulder is pointing forward and down toward the ball to between the 4:00 and 4:30 positions, while your right shoulder is pointing back and up to between the 10:00 and 10:30 positions.

The Throw That pulling back of your right shoulder, lifting it up, and rotating it within the shoulder socket is not so different to throwing a baseball forward. As the mechanics of the polo swing process would have it, pointing your left shoulder down toward the ball facilitates engaging your right shoulder in a manner that is similar to throwing a baseball forward. When your right arm and shoulder are

left shoulder pointing to approximately 4:00/right shoulder to approximately 10:00 For greater power – left shoulder to 5:00/right shoulder to 11:00

Playing Tips To create even greater power, get to where you can point your left shoulder down to the 5:00 o’clock position, while your right shoulder is pointing up toward 11:00 o’clock. That degree of upper body rotation necessitates a significant degree of upper body flexibility. And, that degree of flexibility necessitates maintaining the stability of your hitting platform by way of a strong and constant upper leg gripping effort. I am compelled to tell you that maintaining a strong upper leg gripping effort into your horse’s shoulders is essential to generating power within the swing process; as well as, for maintaining stability and control of the hitting platform from which power is generated

Ideally, at the top of the offside fore shot downswing, there should be a line extending from your mallet hand, to the top of your right shoulder, down to your left shoulder, and down toward the ball between the 4:00 and 5:00 o’clock positions.. Another factor to keep in mind when rotating your torso laterally and your shoulders vertically around your spine – your mallet arm should not become straight in getting the mallet to the top of the downswing. Your arm straightening before reaching the top of the downswing position produces the effect of restricting your right shoulder from moving back, lifting up, and rotating within the shoulder socket. That restriction reduces the power that you can generate.

Knowledge

Additionally, at the top of the downswing position, your elbow should be slightly bent to where there is an approximate 150-degree angle between your upper arm and lower arm when the downswing is initiated. With your right shoulder and mallet hand pointing back and up toward the 11:00 o’clock position, that 150-degree angle should be almost automatic. When the downswing has been initiated, your arm should not become straight until it has reached the 9:00 o’clock position. With your arm continuing to straighten, up to the 9:00 position, you are adhering to the Law of Sequence theory; and are continuing to generate power with which to hit the offside fore shot just that much harder.

Tola Performance

Player Interview

Photograph by Emily Gordon

Jason coaches professionals to help and support them throughout their season, working with clients to help them maintain a good headspace and work on their personal development on and off the field.

One thing I wanted to work on was my consistency, we spoke about this in sessions and throughout the season I started to gain clarity on the reality of my performances rather than a magnified version of how I saw my performances. Overall, the coaching allowed me to have a more rounded season and gave me an outlet when things didn’t go as planned; polo can be so up and down I feel this is an important part of being content and consistent in polo.

Matt Perry – 5 goals (Murus Sanctus La Magdeleine)

Q: How can it help others? A: I guess for the same way it helped me, polo can be very volatile and getting all the help you can is wise. Building a team of people around you that have your back is always going to be a good decision, whether it’s your parents, wife or a coach, all the support you can get helps!

Matt Perry has been working with Jason since April 2021

This season it was great working with Matt during his high goal campaign and watching him performing so well with Murus Sanctus. Matt’s great to work with due to his work ethic, attitude, and modesty. This summer we focused on Matt’s performances on the field rather than any areas off the field. One of the key areas he wanted to develop was his consistency throughout the season. I think the most significant outcome came from him gaining perspective on how he was really playing, rather than how he perceived his performance. To be successful in sport you must have a competitive and self-critical mindset, which Matt has, this has its pros and cons. It helps you to improve to strive for more, but also can leave you feeling a little ‘cooked’ a term we like to use in the polo world. An average performance can feel very bad post game, and this could affect your confidence and playing form. By going over the games and breaking the performance down Matt could often gain more clarity on the game and see why things didn’t go the way he wanted. It also gave us an opportunity 54

Polo Times, October 2021

to focus in on the things he did well. This allowed him to see he was more consistent than he thought and even on a not so good day he was putting in a big shift on the field, working hard and impacting the game. We talked the day before his games to think about areas he wanted to focus on and to mentally prepare for the game. Q: When did you start coaching with Jason and why? A: I started in April 2021 leading into my high goal season with Murus Sanctus La Magdeleine. Jack Richardson had been working with Jason and he recommended him to me, so I wanted to give it a try. Q: How has it helped you with your performance or life? A: For me the most significant benefit I got from working with Jason was my ability to have more perspective throughout the season. I felt more focused on my career as a whole and didn’t get as hung up on individual and performances. This helped me to keep my confidence and motivation.

Q: Does ‘Performance coaching’ have a place in polo and why? A: If you look at how polo has changed over the last 10 years with team trainers and physios, mental support must be the next step for the sport. People didn’t do anything other than stick and ball or play, now players are putting much more into their physical fitness. I know more and more people are getting help with the mental side of the game. People don’t talk about it as much, as it’s not necessary. For example, Personal Trainers you see at games warming teams up and helping, whereas this type of help goes more under the radar and is less tangible. It has a space in polo, not only with on field performance but also off field work; Jason helps with all aspects of your life which in turns helps you to focus on your polo and career. Q: Do you think it’s important for people to have this sort of help? A: I think it very much depends on the person, some focus more on their development than others. If you want to progress you must look at all aspects of your life and performance. If you feel you’re not progressing the way you want to or know you could progress more, it’s worth a try. You don’t need to commit to long periods of time and Jason is willing to chat so I would say have a chat and decide whether you think it’s important. Gossip

#HACK1000MILES

Ex-polo pony, Palomo, and his new owner Cathy Dance, have completed 1,000 miles of hacking after two years and a month. Cathy commented, “I got Palomo just two weeks after he retired from a lifetime of playing polo. I don’t know too much about his career, except that he came over from Spain in 2009, and played until he was 20 years old. His polo groom told me he’d stayed playing to such an age because he was fast — super fast!... As he’s an old boy we only ride four to eight miles in an outing, and at best I ride three times per week.”

CONGRATULATIONS CHIALVOS! Sebastian Chialvo and Kim Croutear tied the knot surrounded by friends and family – congratulations!

Horses at grass or in training thrive on PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL lick with added protein and a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. This is no ordinary lick it’s a balancer in a bucket! Paddock Power will help your horse prepare for the winter months by supporting it’s immune system and giving it the internal tools to fight mud fever, rain scald and the annual ailments over the winter months. We all like to watch our budget over the winter but sometimes www.polotimes.co.uk

you need to invest to reap the rewards. By supplementing RRG 0DOOHWV TXDUWHU SDJH SRUWUDLW FRORXU LQGG the grass and hay/haylage over the winter with Paddock Power you can really boost your horse’s resilience to our unpredictable English winters. Right now, our horses are changing their coats from summer to winter, and this requires PT p76-81 Polo directory and Classified.indd 3 a lot of energy, vitamins, and minerals. These vitamins and minerals are not abundant in the traditional English pasture, and most of us have stopped hard feeding our horses. Paddock Power Original will supplement what we are no longer getting from hard feed.

Heloise Wilson-Smith holds a women’s handicap of 6 goals and can be seen playing across the country as well as representing England overseas in tournaments such as the recent FIP Women’s European Championships. Heloise started playing polo at 13-years-old and after a brief pause in her polo while she had her sons, Oscar and Lucas, Heloise’s successes have included being part of the victorious England Ladies Teams who defeated the USA in 2017 and won the 5th Manipur Statehood Women’s Polo in India What is your biggest passion and why? Family, friends and polo. Family first always, friends are your chosen family and polo is always a passion for life for any player. What is your all-time best polo memory? The first time I represented England against USA in 2017 with Nina Clarkin, Tamara Fox and Izzy McGregor, it was very special. Playing alongside these iconic players made for a treasured and unforgettable memory.

Hardest opponent? I think for ladies it has to be Nina, Hazel and Lia. They are all very sharp to seize any windows of opportunity to attack and are very effective in defence. Which sports do you like outside of polo? X-country skiing, swimming, snowboarding, sailing. I enjoy all sports really. Favourite film and why? The Butterfly Effect. Can I add Gladiator in as a classic? Favourite song/album? Dog Years by Maggie Rodgers. Favourite food/dish? Tuna Sashimi.

Who were/are your favourite teammates? Aah that’s an impossible question to answer, I have a long list of players. I could sing praises for each and every single one, they know who they are I do that about them in life already. I would hate to leave anyone out by naming just a few, but I’ve been very fortunate to play with incredible players both professional and non-professional that I thoroughly enjoyed playing with past and present. A lot of them are also close friends. 64

Polo Times, October 2021

Favourite hobby outside of polo? Outside of polo, I highly rate downtime with family, snuggled up on the sofa together with a movie. I am very happy and content like that. However, we are going to start paddle boarding together now we have just bought one for our boys to share, so I’m looking forward to starting that relatively relaxed family hobby. Before they get older and want to do faster paced hobbies. Most prized possession? My horses without a doubt. Favourite celebrity and why? Jim Carry. He is hilarious in a number of films in the goofiest of ways and very much reminds me of my brother being just like Jim growing up, he always had me in stitches.

Best holiday destination & activity? Safari in the Mara, Kenya (where my husband Sean was born and grew up). It is simply life changing when you see it for the very first time you are forever changed in that moment. There are no words to describe the powerful overwhelming beauty of nature at its most splendid. Best pony and why? Ah very difficult to pick just one, I’ve had a number of very special horses over the years and currently have a number of excellent horses. But if I had to choose it would have to be all-rounder…Locura. He is not only awesome fun to play but has the sweetest personality. He’s a tiny, very sensitive gelding off the field. But on the field, he’s fearless, fast and fabulous. I would keep him at home if I could, he’s more like a dog than a horse. Are you passionately superstitious? Just magpies! If I see just one on its own I have to greet it with a salute and say this ridiculous line. Those who know, know. It’s ridiculous but an inbuilt reflex now. Describe yourself in three words… Emma Boers is here for supper so I asked her and she said quickly… Friendly, sharp and honest. I’ll take them. One thing which would surprise us about you? I can play the didgeridoo.
