ustainability has become a significant future success factor. Every company emphasises the perspectives on which it can have most impact, and about which it is most excited. We are excited to serve our customers in the best possible way, also addressing the perspectives of sustainable development. At Ponsse, sustainability comes from a shared set of company values that emphasise honesty, respect shown towards one another and our striving to achieve the best possible results, including for the environment. In 2021, we revised our mission and vision, emphasising the significance of sustainable development as ”Our shared set of company values emphasise honesty, respect shown our future success factor and towards one another and our striving as a prerequisite for continuity. to achieve the best possible results, This change prompted news of including for the environment.” doing and thinking. We have calculated Ponsse Group’s carbon footprint, our roadmap for emissions reductions is almost complete, we have specified our sustainable development goals based on a stakeholder survey, and sustainability has become an integral part of our company’s strategy. However, the best part is that everyone at Ponsse has taken sustainability and responsibility to heart. It gives us an enormous asset when every small step leads in the same direction. Here at Ponsse, we are committed to following four sustainable development goals based on stakeholder feedback and our strategic goals. We want to 1) improve our people’s wellbeing; 2) innovate sustainable solutions that respect nature; 3) avoid burdening nature through our operations; and 4) be a reliable partner that values community. These goals will not change Ponsse into another company, but they outline our activities in a new way. Everything continues to focus on the customer, customer-based development of products and services, honest operations, and confidential relationships that have enabled our long-term growth-driven operations. Our stakeholders’ needs for environmentally friendly solutions guide our development, and harvesting that fosters the environment remains a prerequisite for industrial wood processing. At the same time, respect for cooperation is extremely important right now. We still have a lot to do and a long way to go. However, we also firmly believe that we and our stakeholders have the excitement, will and skill to constantly make things better.

NEWS / SCORPION GIANT

NEW SOLUTIONS FOR RESPONSIBLE FORESTRY Our excellent new solutions for improving productivity in responsible forestry were demonstrated to audiences for the first time in Surahammar in Sweden in May. The new solutions have been developed together with customers, listening to their needs.

At Scorpion harvesters the stabilisation system and the even weight distribution minimise the pressure directed to the ground.

PONSSE SCORPION GIANT POWER IN VARIOUS CONDITIONS

T

he PONSSE Scorpion Giant is only a giant in terms of productivity and power. The new harvester adds to the Scorpion product range, which was upgraded in 2021. Machines in the Scorpion product range are not only effective, but also agile and balanced tools. According to customer needs, the Scorpion Giant has more traction, which helps the machine be agile even in challenging conditions, including snow, steep slopes and soft terrain. The new C50+ harvester crane fitted in the Scorpion Giant is in a league of its own when it comes to lifting power, also when handling larger stems. The PONSSE Scorpion Giant is the most powerful harvester in the Scorpion product range, while the PONSSE Bear offers the most power of all Ponsse harvesters. The Scorpion Giant is available equipped with the H6, H7, H7 HD Euca or H8 harvester head. UNIQUE ERGONOMICS

Cabin ergonomics and usability have been one of the leading themes in Ponsse’s research and development in recent years, alongside the development of safety. In PONSSE Scorpion machines, including the new Giant, visibility has been improved in all directions – the new cabin features a one-piece windscreen that extends to the roof of the cabin, offering even better visibility and ensuring safe working in all conditions. The cabin is like a practical and quiet office with a view, developed to support the operator’s comfort and wellbeing. The Scorpion Giant consists of all the familiar features of other Scorpion machines, and they

have been developed even further, including more tractive effort and C50+ crane whose fork boom offers excellent visibility of the logging site and increased lifting power. The Scorpion Giant also includes unique active levelling and stabilization system known from other Scorpion models. With the introduction of the Scorpion Giant, the H8 harvester head can now be fitted to a machine in the Scorpion product range. The Scorpion Giant is available with the highly advanced and modern Opti 5G system and the Opti 8 touchscreen computer. MORE PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH NEW FEATURES

Opti 5G, the most modern user interface on the market, combined with the Opti 8 computer, elevates the usability of PONSSE forest machines’ information systems to an entirely new level. The powerful C50+ crane connected to the Opti 5G information system also enables the installation of the PONSSE Harvester Active Crane control system, offering a new way to control the crane and make working more efficient. With Active Crane, operators can directly control the locations of the harvester head, instead of the individual operations of the crane. This allows the operator to focus on wood processing, not only controlling the crane. Harvester Active Crane, available as an option, requires the Opti 5G control system, which is currently available in the Scorpion product range’s harvesters in certain market areas.

NEWS / MAMMOTH

PONSSE MAMMOTH AN UNPRECEDENTED LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY

W

hen it comes to productivity, the powerful PONSSE Mammoth forwarder raises Ponsse’s forwarder product range to a new size category. Equipped with the stepless Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system and the K121 loader, the Mammoth’s sturdy frame structures make it the most powerful forwarder on the market. Super strong power line ensure that large stems and heavy loads can be transported effortlessly, even in the most challenging terrain.

ERGONOMICS ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

In the PONSSE Mammoth forwarder, operator ergonomics has been addressed every step of the way. One of the most prominent new features is the PONSSE Active Seat, available as an option, which is an excellent new product that has been developed with a focus on ergonomics and usability according to forest machine operators’ requests. The new Active Seat improves usability, as it turns and follows the work environment according to crane movements, increasing the forest machine operator’s productivity. The Active Seat, developed by Ponsse, is only available for PONSSE forest machines. NEW FEATURES IN THE PONSSE MAMMOTH FOR INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY

• The PONSSE Active Cabin, an effective cabin suspension system with a simple structure, helps forest machine operators keep going, even during longer shifts, by suspending any stress on the cabin. • The long rear frame enables the transport of long stems at plantations, for example. The forwarder features the largest load space in the Ponsse product range: 6.8 or 8.0 m 2.

trate effectively on working with the loader. Active Crane is easily controlled using two levers, one of which controls the grapple height from the ground, and the other the direction of movement. • The Mammoth’s transmission is based on the CVT technology, the stepless changing of gear ratios. In a forest machine equipped with CVT, the conventional hydrostatic transmission is replaced by a separate CVT system. This enables higher fuel economy and tractive force. The advantages of a high tractive force are especially evident when working at demanding conditions

The PONSSE Mammoth offers the highest productivity when driving distances are long. For example, less driving is required on plantations, because more stems can be transported each time.

• The K121 loader combines high slewing and lifting power, longer reach, new loader geometry and good controllability. The K121 loader improves the effectiveness of working in conditions where load handling takes up a large part of working hours. It also makes working easier at worksites where large trees are processed. Mammoth can be equipped with loader tilt that facilitate works at slopes where the loader is required to produce power, and the crane pillar needs tilt angle for the smooth processing of loads.

• With the PONSSE Active Crane control system, the operator controls grapple movements instead of individual functions, allowing the operator to concen-

powerful feed, firm grip and solid yet agile frame are characteristics of the H8 harvester head. The saw box area is even wider, making the harvester head an excellent choice for trees with a high butt diameter. Active Speed is available for the harvester head as a new feature, giving the harvester head superior performance. ACTIVE SPEED – IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY REGARDLESS OF THE STEM SIZE

with this new function, working with the H8 harvester head is smooth and productive, no matter what the tree diameter is. “We have developed our product range of harvester heads actively with our customers. Many of our customers work in challenging conditions, which is why their development ideas give us the best possible feedback for product development. With its completely new structure, the new H8 harvester head is ideal for processing large trees,” says Janne Loponen, Product Manager for harvester heads.

With Active Speed, the harvester head’s speed rate can be adjusted based on the tree species and stem diameter. Equipped

The new harvester head can be fitted in PONSSE Ergo, Scorpion Giant and Bear, the strongest harvesters in our product range. The design of the saw box area has been further developed to make it easier for snow and sawdust to leave the saw box. The harvester head’s structure has been designed for easy maintenance, and the frame has been built to be even more durable. A powerful feed, combined with a geometry that firmly supports larger stems on feed rollers, guarantees high productivity and good fuel economy. The automatic features of the Opti control system, developed and built by Ponsse, control the feed speed and saw movement, according to the tree diameter, and ensure fast and precise sawing.

INNOVATION / MANAGER

“We installed PONSSE Manager in our Ergo harvester. I wanted to start using the system to monitor productivity and expenses, especially now that fuel prices are so high,” says Robert Gillies, director of Gillies Timber Ltd.

PONSSE MANAGER ALREADY HAS MORE THAN 1,000 CUSTOMER ACCOUNTS

T

he forest machine sector has undergone major changes in recent years, driven by the development of digitalisation, and the processing and management of data will play an even greater role in responsible harvesting in the future. THE 1,000TH ACCOUNT CONNECTED TO THE MANAGER SYSTEM

The popularity of the PONSSE Manager data management system has increased year after year among forest machine entrepreneurs. A significant milestone was reached at the end of March, when the 1,000th PONSSE Manager account was activated for Gillies Timber Ltd, one of our customers in Scotland.

10

PONSSE MANAGER IS A CONTINUOUSLY DEVELOPED DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

PONSSE Manager is a modern system for forest machine monitoring and data transfers. The system helps forest machine entrepreneurs boost their efficiency and productivity through the real-time monitoring of field operations. For example, the system provides forest machine entrepreneurs with data on the location, productivity and fuel consumption of their machines. With Manager, entrepreneurs can monitor the progress of stands, plan and manage machine transport, keep track of machine outputs according to assortment and print out measuring certificates. In addition, Manager informs entrepreneurs of machine maintenance needs and displays any maintenance-related notes made by the operator.

TIMBER CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF OPERATIONS Timber, operating in Brazil, has extensive experience in business and customer service.

T

imber, Ponsse’s dealer in Southern Brazil, has operated in the country for 20 years. Established in 2002, Timber’s journey started on a small scale: the company had one old Ford Pampa maintenance vehicle with which it served its customers. Today, Timber operates in three states, has three offices and delivers comprehensive solutions for cut-to-length harvesting. Timber also represents four other brands. Currently, Timber employs more than 100 people. CLOSE AND VALUABLE COOPERATION SINCE 2014

Timber started cooperation with Ponsse in 2014, and it acts as Ponsse’s forest machine dealer in three southern states in Brazil. “Our cooperation with Ponsse has enabled us to deliver comprehensive solutions to forest sector companies,” says Jober Fonseca, director of Timber. This close cooperation has consisted of the exchange of information and helped to develop Ponsse’s product range based on customers’ practical experiences. For example, the H7 HD Euca harvester head has been specifically developed for customers specialising in debarked eucalyptus.

”Our cooperation with Ponsse has enabled us to deliver comprehensive solutions to forest sector companies,” says Jober Fonseca, director of Timber.

PONSSE SERVICES / ACTIVE CARE

“Harvesting is only one part of silviculture. We are a trusted partner for our customers in all phases of silviculture and forest development”, Leonards Grīgs says.

MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT

KEEPS MACHINES UP AND RUNNING

With maintenance agreements, the customer can focus on their key business and ensure that their machines remain productive and effective. The guarantee and coverage of maintenance and repairs are key factors for the customer company. AS PATA Strenči operates in demanding conditions in Latvia with 13 PONSSE machines.

12

T

he development of Latvia-based AS PATA Strenči is driven by appropriately and thoroughly planned silviculture, producing long-term value for owners. “Harvesting is only one part of silviculture. We are a trusted partner for our customers in all phases of silviculture and forest development,” says Leonards Grīgs, director of the technical department of the company, which was established as long ago as 1947. Conditions are challenging at AS PATA Strenči’s logging sites in the Vidzeme region in eastern and north-eastern Latvia. The ground is soft, even boggy, but level. To keep machines up and running in these demanding conditions, AS PATA Strenči selected maintenance agreements. “We have maintenance agreements for all our machines with SIA Baltic Agro Machinery, Ponsse’s dealer in Latvia. This means that our machines are maintained and repaired by an authorised dealer,” Grīgs says. “In Ponsse’s customer base, AS PATA Strenči is part of the rapidly growing group of maintenance agreement customers. The number of maintenance agreements has increased significantly, especially during the past two years,” says Eveliina Pölkki, product group manager at Ponsse. “Companies of all sizes in different market areas have realised that it is better to focus on effective and productive harvesting and let Ponsse take care of machine maintenance,” Pölkki says. PONSSE Active Care maintenance agreements are available for new and used

machines. Active Care+ provides extended care for new machines, and it is available for main components up to 6,000 hours. AS PATA Strenči’s two newest machines – PONSSE Ergo and PONSSE Buffalo – are covered by Active Care+. “We recently had our first extended care case. The contractual service supported and helped us immediately, and the faults in our Buffalo’s differential gear and brake system were repaired quickly. The machine was delivered for maintenance on Monday morning, and it was returned to us at noon on Tuesday,” Grīgs says. Engaged in cooperation with Ponsse since 2015, the company will replace two of its oldest PONSSE machines with new ones later this year. The company’s positive experiences of the service ensure that it will also acquire Active Care+ for its new workhorses. “We appreciate that extended care has such a large coverage, including the engine, transmission, hydraulic pumps and motors, to name but a few. Of course, brief stoppages are required, but it is important that repairs are included in the agreement, and everything has gone as promised. Now our investments in Active Care agreements are starting to repay themselves.” Eveliina Pölkki says that when forest machine contractors give their machines to Ponsse’s large and trained service network for maintenance, the machines’ resale value is also higher. “If two similar machines are placed sideby-side, the buyer will certainly select the one maintained by Ponsse, as its maintenance history has been accurately recorded.”

PONSSE ACTIVE CARE MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT

A maintenance agreement customised for each customer’s operating environment and business. Available for new and used PONSSE machines. EXTENDED PONSSE ACTIVE CARE+

A maintenance agreement with extended care, available for new PONSSE machines. Coverage for main machine components up to 6,000 hours. PONSSE FRAME AND CRANE CARE

MARKO TURUNEN AREA SERVICE MANAGER, EASTERN FINLAND / PONSSE PLC, MIKKELI, FINLAND

In his free time, Marko Turunen plays American football: he is a linebacker for the Mikkeli Bouncers.

Marko Turunen’s first role at Ponsse was as a summer employee in Mikkeli’s service centre back in 2005. After a few years with the company, Turunen mentioned to his supervisor that he would be interested in working abroad as well. “I got a phone call from a co-worker in 2013, and he asked if I would like to go for a threemonth-long trip to Brazil. That rather short trip turned into four years”, Marko says. The original purpose of the trip was to go to Brazil and train the locals on how Ponsse’s harvester heads peel eucalyptus better. During Marko’s trip to Brazil, a Full Service project was launched which Marko was asked to join. “Along with the new Full Service cus-

tomer, we established a new location in Brazil in Ipantiga. Almost immediately, close to a hundred local employees were hired. Most of my time was spent working in that project, as well as with other Full Service-related tasks,” shares Marko. He returned to Finland in 2017. “Working abroad taught me patience and perseverance. I also learned a new language. I learned how to look at the bigger perspective, and of course, the journey to Brazil taught me how things are done elsewhere. All of this is important in my current role.” “The best part about working at Ponsse is the great atmosphere and the fact that the company wants to develop constantly,” Turunen says.

PEKKA TERÄVÄ SPARE PARTS MANAGER / PONSSE S.A.S, PEYRET LE CHÂTEAU, FRANCE

”It is important to be open to a new culture, customs and people to be able to integrate.”

14

It was in the late 90s in Finland that Pekka Terävä noticed a job posting in a newspaper. Quite quickly, he found himself working as a mechanic in France for Ponsse. Pekka was first to be hired to work for a year in France, but the trip grew longer and longer. Now over two decades have passed. Today Pekka works as a spare parts manager in central France, at Peyrat le Chateau. Pekka says that it is important to be open to a new culture, customs and people to be able to integrate. ”At the beginning, learning French was difficult. But I managed to learn a new language while working and living in France,” Pekka recalls and adds that the Finnish accent can still be recognised in his speech, but it’s not an issue he gets along well and is understood in French.

A big factor for staying in France was family. In France, Pekka met his wife and eventually their family grew bigger, with two boys. The older son is now an adult and works for Ponsse as well. “Every day is different in the role of a spare parts manager,” shares Pekka. He travels monthly between different Ponsse locations in France. Different events and partnerships also bring variety to his work. The Ponsse spirit is important to Pekka. People work together, and everyone can have an impact on their own work. ”Even though Ponsse is a big company these days, the family business feel is still there, as is the Ponsse spirit – those are the things I like most about this company,” notes Pekka.

EEVA-LIISA SALONEN SALES COORDINATOR / PONSSE NORTH AMERICA, COBURG, OREGON

Eeva-Liisa Salonen has been on her Ponsse journey for over 26 years, of which 19 years was at Ponsse North America. It all started back in 1995 when Eeva-Liisa’s then-boyfriend Jouni Viitikka was asked to start the parts and service center in Rhinelander, Wisconsin for Ponsse – and Eeva-Liisa was asked to come along. “We had to start everything from scratch! There was just an empty space without electricity, phone lines, furniture, parts, and so on,” recalls Eeva-Liisa. A few years later, Ponsse’s journey took them to Sweden, then to Ponsse’s dealer

A.L.P.A Equipment in Canada, then to Finland, back to Rhinelander in 2006, and finally, in 2016, to Coburg, Oregon. Eeva-Liisa enjoys her independent job as a sales coordinator. It’s an interesting mix of dealing with brokers, shipowners, truckers, and of course, with our customers and salespeople. Even though life has been in the States for almost two decades now, Eeva-Liisa returns to Finland regularly. “We usually spend our summer holidays remodelling our lakeside summer house in Finland, and we sometimes even have a few moments for relaxing.”

Eeva-Liisa Salonen and her husband Jouni in Salida, Colorado in the summer of 2021.

FELIPE CERPA TECHNICAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST & SERVICE TRAINER / PONSSE PLC, IISALMI, FINLAND

“Working at Ponsse feels like being a member of a big family!”

Felipe Cerpa’s story aligned with Ponsse in 2014 when he was working for a Ponsse dealer in Chile. He worked in after-sales and took care of training and technical support. One day he got a hint from a friend to apply for a job – which was based in Finland! “The reason I applied is because I really like the Ponsse environment, the concept that the customer comes first, the values of the company and the opportunity to develop in my career while enjoying what I do every day,” Felipe recalls.

Felipe accepted the work offer and a few steps later, he moved from Chile to live in Iisalmi, Finland with his wife and two young children. This was in the autumn of 2021. Now he works as a technical support specialist and service trainer for Ponsse. In his work, he enjoys solving problems with his team and having the opportunity to work with different people from many different locations. “The Ponsse spirit and customer closeness are very important to me. Working at Ponsse feels like being a member of a big family!”

DIANA OLKOWSKI MARKETING MANAGER / PONSSE NORTH AMERICA, RHINELANDER, WISCONSIN

Diana Olkowski has worked for Ponsse since 2006. She joined the Ponsse team right after her graduation from Finlandia University, which is located in Hancock, Michigan, USA. She also became familiar with Finland during her studies as she studied in Jyväskylä during her junior year in college. “I still have some distant relatives in Finland. My grandparents spoke fluent Finnish, and I’m very proud of my Finnish heritage. My dream growing up was to work for a Finnish company in the USA, and Ponsse made that dream happen,” she continues. She currently works as a marketing manager for Ponsse North America.

“My husband also works for Ponsse, so we are a true Ponsse family,” Diana, who is also a mother of three boys, says with pride. While working for Ponsse, Diana has travelled for work to several countries. “I’ve travelled to Finland many times while working for Ponsse for meetings, customer trips and media visits. I’ve also travelled to Sweden, Estonia, Spain, Portugal and Canada while working for Ponsse.” “Ponsse really does have a lot of great people working for them. Ponsse also treats its employees well, so the respect goes both ways,” shares Diana,, who has been working for Ponsse for 16 years.

PROFILE / GLENN NYMAN

GLENN NYMAN Age: 59 Years at Ponsse: 25 Title today: Warranty handler Hometown: Västerås, Sweden Hobbies: Fishing and being on the sea with my boat, reading, watching movies Motto in life: Seize the day

GLENN NYMAN 25 YE AR S AT PO N SS E

Glenn Nyman has worked at Ponsse for a quarter of a century, and not one day has been the same. This 59-year-old expert in financial administration says that although many things have changed over the years, many things have stayed the same.

I

t was 1996, when Ponsse Ab in Sweden was recruiting a financial officer for their Västerås organisation. Glenn Nyman saw the posting and decided to apply. Following an interview with the president, the position was Nyman’s. The tasks and work in the 90s were very different from today. The accounting software, which Nyman acquired for the still small Ponsse AB, was managed manually. Invoices were created with a word processor, and warehouse accounting was done with pen and paper. There was a total of about 10 employees, and the company sold the same number of machines per year. According to Glenn, it was an exciting and fast-paced time.

16

Today, Ponsse AB has a total of 68 employees. Nyman says that the company today is very different from its founding years. FAST-PACED EARLY YEARS

At the turn of the millennium, financial administration had a lot to do, and there were constant changes in the operation. It was normal for computers to crash every now and then, which caused no end of grey hairs for Glenn, the financial officer. In the fast pace of the early years, Ponsse AB went through personnel changes, because the operating model was not yet complete.

Nyman has spent most of his career in financial administration. Over the years, he has accumulated a wealth of knowledge. Information moves faster, through various channels, and everything requires a quicker reaction. “The amount of information is massive, and people are expected to react to everything very quickly. The way we work is very different from the early years.” Nyman says that there have been many good and many challenging times over the 25 years. The operation has expanded and, as the years have gone by, Ponsse’s position as one of the world’s leading forestry machines has solidified. “The machines have developed in leaps and bounds. I think the changes have been massive! High quality is still required for the machines to withstand the work, which is very hard. Our machines are developed with feedback from our customers. Operator comfort and the cabin have been given a great deal of attention.” CUSTOMER FOCUS STILL DRIVING FORCE

There is one thing, Nyman says, that has not changed in the past 25 years: Ponsse’s focus on the customer. “Focusing on the customer has been clear since Einari’s time. That is something that has not changed in all these years.” “At a point when the company was growing rapidly, I was afraid we could lose sight of the customer, as that has happened to many a large company. Many of our customers told me, when talking about large companies, that they weren’t being considered or listened to. I hoped that we wouldn’t end up in the same situation. Thankfully, that didn’t happen.” “I think it’s impressive that our company’s management still meets with customers when visiting Sweden. Customers continue to be welcome at our events, which makes them feel important. They feel like they’re being listened to. In a large, international company, this is fairly rare.” “I believe the secret to our growth is listening to our customers,

which is a strong guiding force in our business.” EVERY WORKDAY IS DIFFERENT

The Ponsse spirit, which is, believe it or not, the same around the world, is an indication of the company’s early legacy. Nyman believes that this is still a guiding force, and that Einari’s legacy is being upheld in an exemplary manner. “We focus on the future, without forgetting Einari’s hopes and way of thinking. I think that’s fantastic.” When Nyman is asked for the most memorable moments of his career, he mentions the entire Ponsse network’s cruise to Estonia. “This particular year, we went on a 24-hour cruise to Estonia with our customers and employees from around the world. We had reserved the whole ship and had our machines presented on the deck. It was such a fantastic trip that I still remember it!” Currently, Glenn works with warranty matters. “Not one workday is the same, and I like that. The colleagues around me are skilled, and everything gets done,” he says. When Nyman is asked for something he would like to say to new Ponsse people, he mentions the atmosphere and the freedom: “The atmosphere here is good, and you can work freely. There’s a lot to do, but it’s all possible as long as you do your own tasks.” “LIFE IS HERE AND NOW”

Nyman has had the opportunity to see the world and travel for work to Ponsse subsidiaries in Finland, China, Brazil and Uruguay. That is something he is very grateful for. Today, Glenn’s thought is that life is here, and now. Time passes quickly and the years go by. Remote work also gives freedom and opportunities for Glenn, as he can work from anywhere in the world when he needs to. Nyman says: “Life is here and now. There’s a lot I have seen, and there’s still much more to see.”

WE ARE PROUD OF OUR UNIQUE PONSSE SPIRIT

D

uring decades, the global Ponsse network and its employees have built their own unique culture and spirit, following the ideas of Einari Vidgrén, the company’s founder. Last autumn, Ponsse’s employees took a mobile quiz on Ponsse’s updated mindset. The quiz asked Ponsse’s employees to define the part of the Ponsse spirit which they most related to. Available in nine different languages, the quiz recorded more than 800 responses. The quiz showed that each part of the Ponsse spirit was found important. Most responses highlighted helping co-workers and taking others into consideration, assuming responsibility, as well as constructive humility and a tenacious work ethic. The characteristics to which employees related the most varied from one country to the next. INNOVATION / REMAN & PARTS RECIRCULATION

LEADING THE WAY IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY For more than ten years now, Ponsse has remanufactured components for used PONSSE forest machines, and the company has been engaged in the trade of used machines throughout its history. Ponsse’s pioneering role in the circular economy is, above all, based on its customers’ requests.

T

he Ponsse Reman & Parts Recirculation unit in Iisalmi processes damaged parts sent by customers, the factory or the sales network. After remanufacturing, parts are sold to customers at affordable prices or used in the modernisation of used forest machines. Remanufacturing provides customers with low-cost products, minimises material loss, and also solves challenges related to the availability of spare parts. The goal is to also implement remanufacturing operations in subsidiaries outside the EU, close to local customers. Life cycle assessments for forest machines verify the envi-

20

ronmental benefits produced by remanufacturing operations: the carbon footprint of a remanufactured component is only a quarter of that of a new part. “The better we can reuse machine components, the fewer emissions there will be during the machine life cycle,” says Ville Ohukainen who is responsible for the Reman & Parts Recirculation unit’s operations. The parts sent for remanufacturing are typically the largest and most valuable machine components, such as engines and gearboxes. The range of remanufactured products also includes large cylinders, hydraulic components and such cabin parts as seats and computer systems. “Remanufacturing doubles the

service life of components. Most of all, we remanufacture mechanical transmission components that also otherwise have a long life cycle,” Ohukainen says. Remanufactured parts include a security deposit, which customers get back when they return the damaged part for remanufacturing. This ensures that spare parts do not end up as waste. Remanufactured parts carry the same warranty as new products. THE LONG LIFE CYCLE OF A FOREST MACHINE

Alongside remanufacturing, Ponsse is strongly engaged in the circular economy in its used machine services that it offers in all of its market areas. In used machine services, used forest machines are delivered to Ponsse for refurbishing and resale when a new machine is purchased. As a result, the machine life cycle continues

in the hands of the new owner. Even based on a conservative estimate, the service life of a forest machine is at least ten years, and you can even see machines of 20 to 30 years at logging sites. Performance packages offer another way to upgrade used machines. They are sets of parts that professional mechanics use to upgrade machines to meet modern requirements and maintain the performance of older machines. When a machine finally reaches the end of its service life, it can be dismantled. Usable parts will be refurbished to make low-cost spare parts, while any unusable parts will be recycled as material. More than 90 per cent of a forest machine’s weight constitutes recyclable material, mainly steel and cast iron.

In 2021, Ponsse was selected on the list of the most interesting circular economy companies of the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra as a pioneer in circular economy solutions.

”The better we can reuse machine components, the fewer emissions there will be during the machine life cycle,” says Ville Ohukainen

NETWORK / CHILE

FROM A DEALER TO PART OF THE COMPANY

PONSSE ESTABLISHES A SUBSIDIARY IN CHILE In Chile, the news received a positive welcome. There are currently about 170 PONSSE machines in operation across Chile.

P

onsse’s subsidiary Ponsse Chile S.p.A will be responsible for sales, spare parts and maintenance services in Chile. “Our customers in Chile heard really good news when Ponsse announced its intention to establish a subsidiary in Chile. Together, we want to develop Ponsse’s services, maintenance network, training opportunities and the availability of spare parts in Chile,” says Martin Toledo, managing director of Ponsse Uruguay, who is also in charge of operations in Chile. The subsidiary was established when Ponsse acquired the operations of its dealer F.C. Ventas. The transaction started in November 2021, with Ponsse’s subsidiary in Chile seeing the light of day on 16th March 2022. The transaction included the service centre and its operations, spare parts stocks, and maintenance vehicles. “WE ARE DEDICATED TO HIGH-QUALITY WORK AND OUR CUSTOMERS”

Nearly 20 employees transferred from F.C. Ventas to Ponsse, and they were pleased after hearing news of the transfer. Service mechanic Miguel Gustavo Riquelme believes that he can develop his skills even more by working for

22

Ponsse. What he thinks is special about Ponsse is that it keeps its promises, as defined by its values. “We are dedicated to high-quality work and our customers,” Riquelme says. He enjoys working as a service mechanic and says that it is like a never-ending adventure. “I can visit different places every day on my own or with my colleagues. It’s great to talk with customers and forest machine operators. At the end of the day, I’m happy that I’ve been able to help them and meet their expectations,” says a satisfied Riquelme.

director, has high expectations now that Ponsse has gained a firmer foothold in Chile. “Ponsse establishing a subsidiary in Chile is good news for the country’s forestry and especially for everyone who has selected a PONSSE machine. I hope that Ponsse’s dedication to its customers and the level of maintenance can be seen even better than before,” Jorge says. Jorge believes that, as a major international forest machine company, Ponsse will develop and improve the quality of its services and machines even further. ROOTS IN THE 1990S

GOOD NEWS ACCEPTED WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Ponsse has a good reputation and high expectations in Chile. Its Chilean customers work especially for local sawmills, plywood, and wood processing plants. Jorge Arce y Cía Ltda is a family-owned business located in Coelemu, in the region of Nuble. It started by using chainsaws and by transporting wood pulled by horses but, come the 2000s, it put forest machines to work. In 2013, the company bought its first PONSSE machine. Jorge Arce, the company’s managing

The first Ponsse machines arrived in Chile in the early 90s to a company named Monte Aquila. The first machines were HS15 Ergo and S15 Ergo. In addition to forest machines, Ponsse has shared its knowledge about the use age of cut-to-length forest machines in forestry operations. After the mid-90s, HS16 Ergo and S16 Buffalo models were also exported to Chile. The very first machines in the 90s were delivered straight to the customer, but all the way until 2022, Ponsse has operated in Chile via dealers. Currently, there are 170 PONSSE forest machines operating in Chile.

CHILE & HARVESTING • Approximately 47.6 million cubic metres of wood is harvested annually in Chile • The CTL method accounts for almost 30 per cent of harvesting, and its role has increased during the past ten years • At present, Ponsse’s market share in CTL-based harvesting is roughly 40 per cent

Ponsse’s facilities are in Chillán, a town some 400 kilometres to the south of Santiago de Chile, the capital city. Ponsse provides not only machine sales, spare parts, and maintenance services, but also training. “We started to develop our training range even further and work with local educational institutions to train more forest machine operators for customer companies and mechanics for Ponsse,” Toledo says.

THE ROLE OF DATA ALSO INCREASING IN SILVICULTURE IN CHILE

Chile’s forestry is based on planted forests, with pine and eucalyptus trees mainly being harvested. The sustainable annual harvesting volume has grown steadily thanks to the trees’ quick lifecycle and well-managed forest plantations. Currently, harvesting is mostly carried out using the full tree method. However, the role of the cut-to-length

method has increased during the past ten years. In the future, the need for digital services will increase in harvesting. Data is needed to support operations, all the way from planting to thinning, harvesting, and transporting. “The change will be a big one, and Ponsse definitely wants to be part of it and grow alongside our customers, supported by data,” Toledo says.

NETWORK / CZECH REPUBLIC

THE PRINCIPLES OF A FAMILY- OWNED COMPANY CONTINUE THEIR STORY IN PONSSE’S SUBSIDIARY

PONSSE ESTABLISHES A SUBSIDIARY IN THE FORESTCOVERED CZECH REPUBLIC Ponsse continues to operate in the Czech Republic under its subsidiary and is continuing the excellent work done by Krenek Forest Service, its former dealer.

T

he subsidiary was established when Ponsse acquired Krenek Forest Service, a family-owned company and dealer responsible for PONSSE forest machines and services in the Czech Republic. Ponsse Czech, Ponsse’s subsidiary in the Czech Republic, officially saw the light of day at the beginning of April. Krenek’s employees will continue to work for Ponsse. Established in 2003, Krenek Forest Service has acted as an official Ponsse dealer since 2013. Before that, the company operated through Wahlers Forsttechnik, Ponsse’s dealer in Germany. “We’re proud to continue Krenek’s work in the Czech Republic. It’s been

24

an honour for Krenek’s family-owned business to take care of customer relationships with relentless honesty and commitment, which also lays the foundation of our operations,” says Juho Nummela, Ponsse’s President and CEO. NEWS ACCEPTED WITH A POSITIVE MIND

Ponsse Czech’s head office is located in Hostinné. The company will continue to operate in Krenek’s service facilities. In the Czech Republic, Ponsse provides not only full-range machine sales, but also maintenance and spare parts services and training. When Jakub Hacura, Ponsse Czech’s managing director, started at Krenek, he

knew that there was something special about Ponsse. “I’ve always been a fan of Ponsse. Even my first visit to Ponsse’s factory in Vieremä was like nothing else. I felt that Ponsse was much more than just a forest machine manufacturer,” says Jakub Hacura, managing director of Ponsse Czechia. A total of 16 employees will transfer to Ponsse from Krenek Forest Service. “Our employees accepted the news with a positive mind and are eager to continue to work for Ponsse. We’ve also received very positive feedback from our Czech customers on the transaction,” Hakura says. Vratislav Šimek and Michal Lejdar,

new members of the Ponsse family, work in Ponsse’s shop. They are both pleased about the change. “I believe that Ponsse is one of the best forest machine companies in the world. I’ve had the opportunity to test different brands, and Ponsse stands out from all the rest,” Šimek says. “Ponsse is a great company with high potential! What I’m expecting the most is that stock management will develop in a better direction,” Lejdar adds. SERVICES TO IMPROVE EVEN FURTHER

Martin Novák is one of Ponsse Czechia’s customers. His harvesting company operates in the Hradec Králové region in the Czech Republic, close to the Polish border in the east. “Not only are Ponsse’s services located very close, the quality and simplicity of its products are Ponsse’s advantages,” says managing director Martin Novák. The company operates six PONSSE forest machines. Novák’s company expects Ponsse’s maintenance services

to improve even further. Now that Ponsse has started operating in the Czech Republic, it is also expected that local forest machine repair shops will receive high-quality training. “I expect Finnish colleagues to also provide excellent maintenance training for Ponsse’s local service mechanics,” Martin Novák says. A SPRUCE-DOMINATED COUNTRY

Currently, there are 290 PONSSE forest machines operating in the Czech Republic. Ponsse accounts for roughly 20 per cent of the cut-to-length harvesting market in the country. Ponsse is a household name in the Czech Republic, and its service level is trusted. “With customer orientation being one of its values, it always develops new solutions that are even better than the last ones. Ponsse builds its solutions from its customers’ perspectives. As a result, Ponsse can succeed with its customers,” Hacura says. The Czech Republic is dominated by

conifers. In recent years, bark beetles have troubled the country’s forestry. Due to bark beetle damage, more spruce forests have been harvested than normal. Nearly 35 million cubic metres of forests were harvested in 2020. Almost all harvesting operations were carried out in areas damaged by bark beetles. The normal annual harvesting volume is 13–17 million cubic metres in the Czech Republic. Any wood left over by Czech sawmills is exported to other countries such as neighbouring Austria and Germany. Czech wood is also exported to China.

Jakub Hacura was appointed as managing director of Ponsse Czech s.r.o. at the beginning of April 2022. He has worked in managerial positions in PONSSE forest machine sales and maintenance at Křenek Forest Service s.r.o. since 2017.

INNOVATION / HARVESTER ACTIVE CRANE

PONSSE HARVESTER ACTIVE CRANE SYSTEM SUPPORTING THE OPERATOR

EASY TO USE, STRAIGHTFORWARD AND SMOOTH The Harvester Active Crane system improves crane control and work efficiency. The system has received excellent feedback from its users.

W

ith Active Crane, operators can directly control the movements of the harvester head, instead of the individual operations of the crane. This allows the operator to focus on wood processing, not only controlling the crane. The system also slows down all movements automatically before the end of travel to protect mechanical structures and the operator from straining impacts. “The system helps operators and allows them to focus on the quality and efficiency of work instead of crane control,” says Markku Savolainen, product manager of equipment automation at Ponsse. Active Crane also makes the training of new forest machine operators easier, helping them learn how

26

to work economically, while saving the machine’s structures. The crane can easily be controlled using two levers, one of which controls the harvester head’s height from the ground, and the other the direction of movement. The typical movement ranges of harvesters have been addressed in the design. The crane only includes one additional module and a magnetic sensor in the extension cylinder, ensuring simple and reliable technological solutions. Harvester Active Crane, available as an option, requires the Opti 5G control system. The option is currently available for Scorpion machine models in selected market areas. The availability of Harvester Active Crane will be expanded to other machine models and market areas.

HANNU LIIKANEN, KARTTULAN METSÄTYÖ OY, FINLAND

“ “

”I’ve used Harvester Active Crane for a few years now. I wouldn’t go back, as the system has made working so much more easily. When you control the harvester head’s movements instead of individual functions, you can keep going longer. You don’t have to focus on crane operations in so much detail. It’s great to see how systems like this are developed to make working easier.”

RONNY BENGTSSON, UGB SKOGSSERVICE HB, SWEDEN ”The crane is always in the correct position and offers maximum strength and added smoothness. It makes working easier, and the crane never hits the ground. I’ve also noticed that Harvester Active Crane reduces fuel consumption, making working even more effective and economical. I’ve been using the system since the autumn of 2021.”

HARRI KIVELÄ, METSÄ-MULTIA OY, FINLAND ”After a few months of using the system, I’ve noticed a difference. Using the crane isn’t as tiring. Especially in thinning sites you notice it: after a long work day, you still have energy left for the last few hours of working. Harvester Active Crane makes working easier and helps you keep going.”

LOGGING NEWS LAPLAND EDUCATION CENTRE REDU AND PONSSE LAUNCHES A SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Lapland Education Centre REDU and Ponsse have launched an advanced simulation-based learning environment in Rovaniemi. This was also the largest simulator deal in Ponsse’s history. REDU now has a total of 11 PONSSE simulators: one Basic, three Full and five new Multi simulators. Students use the equipment in different stages of their learning path from basic studies to the most advanced assignments. The new equipment enables more students to be trained at the same time. “Simulator training is safe, economical and effective,” says Harri Savonen, training development manager at Ponsse. Simulator training effectively supports forest machine education and provides a good basis for work before students start operating an actual machine.

NEW FOREST MACHINE OPERATORS IN CHINA COULD NOT WAIT TO START WORKING The beginning of 2022 was a cause for celebration at Ponsse’s unit in Beihai in China. Newly trained forest machine operators celebrated their graduation and were eagerly waiting to get started. At best, more than 30 forest machine

operators complete their training every year, and they can choose from various forms of continuing training. Ponsse, together with Stora Enso, has trained nearly 200 forest machine operators since 2007. The operators

work at logging sites in China’s forests. Ponsse has operated in China from 2007 and employs nearly 30 people in the country.

THE PONSSE PATH STARTED TEN YEARS AGO

Ponsse and Vocational College in the Northern Savo region (YSAO) have cooperated for ten years enabling advanced on-the-job learning for students completing a basic vocational degree. The cooperation is called the Ponsse path. The Ponsse path was created out of a need to learn forest machine engineering in real-life conditions, for which Ponsse offers an excellent setting in Finland and globally. Students selected for the path start their on-the-job learning period during the very first year of their studies, and all training periods are completed at Ponsse. “The idea of the Ponsse path is to provide students with a flexible study path and a

practical basic vocational degree. Our aim is to constantly develop the Ponsse path and the quality of on-the-job learning in cooperation with YSAO, and to provide students with an ideal learning environment. After completing the path, Ponsse receives skilled employees,” says Paula Oksman, HR director.

PONSSE URUGUAY: SOLAR POWER AND RECYCLING

SMALL ACTS MATTER

I

n Uruguay, solar power is used in various ways. Locally, it is called “clean energy”. A total of 168 solar panels have been installed on the building’s roof, generating roughly 40 kW of energy every hour, depending on the weather. Repair vehicles at field maintenance stations also partly run on solar power, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

30

Waste and material are also recycled actively in Uruguay. All material that can be recycled or reused will be utilised as effectively as possible. In addition, new trees are planted outside buildings to sequester carbon dioxide. Planting indigenous trees is important to protect any threatened species. “Ponsse Open House” visits are arranged for students and schoolchildren

to demonstrate the operations, facilities, responsible way of working and Ponsse solutions built for our customers.
