fternoon all, derby day is here, the ones we look forward to every season. Hopefully we’ll have a good crowd and the atmosphere will be decent. Weymouth have had good start to the season and today will be a tough test for us. They have some good footballers that can cause us problems and we’ll have to be at our best to stop them, but as always were confident in our own ability and believe we can get a result. Boxing Day saw us go to Frome, a game we thought we should have come away with three points from, we had chances but it was just one of those days where

it wouldn’t go in for us. We hit the bar and post serveral times. The pitch was awful, it made it hard for us to play any sort of football and made it a lot more even. Luckily other sides failed to take the opportunity on us dropping points and failed to win also. Three points today will be a massive boost to us and a great start to the new year, so really get behind the lads and make Tatnam as loud as possible. Up the Dolphins Whisk

hat a game in prospect this afternoon. As these notes are written the main hope is for good weather so that the fixture pulls in the biggest possible attendance for a clash that has eagerly been awaited ever since the fixture list came out last Summer. The players, officials and supporters of Weymouth FC are genuinely most welcome to Tatnam this afternoon and I truly hope that the efforts we have gone to to make the occasion enjoyable work in the manner we anticipate. The Clubs huge thanks are due to the management at Poole Stadium for agreeing to provide free parking and also to agreeing to lay on free admission to anyone attending today’s game to the greyhound meeting this evening- just hang on to your ticket stub and you will get free admission. Also thanks must go to the Poole Labour Club for making their bar facilities available to Weymouth fans before the game today. Our bar is just too small to cope with the expected attendance and the Labour Club’s willingness to solve that particular problem is very much appreciated. To manage a crowd here which will hopefully exceed four figures is not easy and I do so hope that everyone who attends the game this afternoon will have a good match day experience and will respect our efforts to organise the day as best we feel able. When I first started to watch Poole play in the mid sixties Weymouth were by far and away the top team in the Southern League - the very first league game I saw at the Stadium saw the Terras inflict a 4-0 defeat on the home side
which had just won promotion to the Premier Division. To be playing today’s opponents in circumstances where we now lead the way in the league table is hugely satisfying not that anything will be taken for granted in terms of the result-Jason Matthews’ side are more than capable and will provide fearsome opposition today. This afternoon I hope to have the privilege of making a presentation to Roger Bazeley - a true Poole Town legend- more on Roger elsewhere in the programme. 2016 promises to be an exciting year for the Club with so much happening both on and off the field. This incredible journey that we have been on ever since Tom became our manager has a fair few twists and turns left in it yet of that I have no doubt so fasten your seat belts and hang on in for the rest of the ride!! No midweek game this week- away at Stratford next Saturday and then back here on a fortnight for a game v Kings Lynn. Enjoy the game and don’t forget the new style 50:50 tickets. A huge vote of thanks to Pete Blundell for all he has done selling those tickets over the years and and a huge vote of thanks to Pete Lewis for agreeing to take over and carry on Pete B’s good work raising alongside Geoff of course much need income to assist the Poole Town cause. Happy New Year. Chris

oole remain 12 points clear at the summit, but slumped to their second successive draw in two games, as relegation threatened Frome Town managed to battle to a 0-0 draw. Most will look at the scoreline and presume the game was a dull affair – but there were a catalogue of chances in both halves, the majority falling to Poole. The visitors would go close around the ten minute mark, as Marvin Brooks’ shot rattled the crossbar, before Lee Wort saw his shot well saved by Darren Chitty in the Frome goal. Poole would continue piling on the pressure – and their next best chance came as a ball

was scooped over the Frome backline, allowing Lindsay to fire a shot off – the rebound falling to Wort, who spurred his opportunity by tapping wide of the goal. After the break and Frome became more confident on the ball – and quickly looked to keep it, their grasp of the game growing larger. However, Poole would still have the better chances – including hitting the post twice. Both near-misses came amongst a flurry of chances, which Poole just couldn’t seem to convert. The best chance was probably when substitute Richard Gillespie countered – beating his man to the ball, before firing it past Chitty – only for it to

LAST TIME OUT bounce off the post and into the goalkeeper. Frome hung on, but the point was not enough to lift them out of the relegation zone. For the second week in the row, Poole’s promotion rivals have failed to capitalise on the leaders dropping points – no team in the top 8 won. After the game, Killick stated that it was “impossible” to play “proper football” due to the conditions. “Both sides sort of struggled to [have] any real fluency. It was always going to be a physical war, then there was very few chances – [it was a question] of who takes one.” “I felt that’s where we were a bit unfortunate – we’ve hit the post twice, we’ve hit the bar – we had the clearer opportunities. I thought Frome played well, and we didn’t have it all our own way by all means. I just feel when you look at the balance of play, and the chances we created, we probably deserved to win. But when the conditions are like this, it is difficult to create things.” “We had times in the second half where we were in quite good positions to cross the
ball – you cross the ball, it takes a bobble and it ends up in the stands. I think you’ve got to put the result in the proper context, and when you look at the conditions it wasn’t too bad.” Poole’s first game of the New Year is against Dorset Rivals Weymouth – who also drew today, as the other Dorset side in the Southern Premier equalised in the 93rd minute. “There’s going to be a really good atmosphere at the game, and that’s what players want to play, matches where there’s a lot of supporters, that’s what they prefer. For that reason alone, it becomes a big match for us to play in.”
The Fan’s View Jack Tanner Some may see it as a missed opportunity to stretch our lead further, but Frome dug their heels in and fought for the draw. With other sides slipping up it may not be costly, but form and league position is disregarded for derby games - this is going to be tough.

ROGER BAZELEY On 6th March 2014 we held the first PTFC “Hall of Fame”induction night. The following Poole Town legends were the first award winners:- Ray Ames,Mark Baber, Derek Courtney,Tony Funnell, Leigh Phillips,Martyn Jones,Taffy Richardson and Stan Rickaby. There were three others who couldn’t be there that night- Shaun Brooks being one of them and Roger another. Shaun received his award earlier this season and it is Roger’s turn today. As I am putting these notes together it has just struck me that no less than five of the names mentioned above were signed by Roger during his time as our manager- does that not speak volumes? Roger first signed for us in 1972.He ceased his playing career in 1976 through injury. He had clocked up 150 league appearances as a commanding centre back and scored no fewer than 18 league goals. He became initially reserve team manager and then very quickly accepted my offer to become the first team manager. He stayed in that role until 1985 when he stepped down due to non football related issues. A resignation he tendered with great regret which was only equal led by my sadness in accepting it. We had some great times under his reign playing sparkling football at times with probably the most successful goal scoring partnerships in our history with the likes of Gary Manson,Derek Courtney,Tony Funnell,Tommy Paterson and Robbie Russell thrilling the Stadium faithful. We had three trips to Italy in the Anglo Italian Cup with him in charge. Roger lived and breathed Poole Town and alongside Tom is by far and away one of the two best managers I have ever had the privilege of working with in my four decades on the board of this great Club. Roger is a true Poole Town legend and a well deserved recipient of the honour of being inducted into our Hall of Fame.

TOM TALKS Tom Killick
First Team Manager
T
oday we welcome Weymouth FC to the Tatnam. This is a huge match for both teams. Not only are we fierce local rivals but also both teams are well placed in the league and desperate to achieve promotion. Taking points from your promotion rivals is so important and I expect this encounter to contain passion and commitment in abundance. Motivating players for these matches is never a problem and in my view it’s the team that plays with intelligence and calmness at the vital times that normally ends up victorious . Our last two results have been disappointing. I thought we were sloppy and somewhat lethargic against Slough and it was so frustrating to score 3 goals and still drop points. I thought against Frome we were much more focused and couldn’t have put more into the game in what were horrendous conditions. We came up against a goalkeeper in inspired form and also had the misfortune to hit the frame of the goal 3 times including an effort by Richard Gillespie in the 92nd minute that agonisingly hit the inside of the post and proceeded to bounce into the goalkeepers arms. It’s great to see “Gilly” back but it will be a few weeks yet before he is ready to start a game. With that in mind I am delighted to say that we have secured a further 1 months extension to lee worts loan from Gosport. Lee is a great asset to us albeit a temporary one and I am so grateful to Eddie Mitchell for funding it the second month it was a great gesture. Jamie Gleeson is very close to fitness and joined in training fully for the first time tonight (Tuesday) . I expect him to be available for selection within the next 2 weeks. It has been a mixed calendar year for
us. The players were exceptional in getting us to the top of the league and then we had the bitter disappointment of losing out on the last day to Corby and then again in the play offs. Everyone knows it’s how you respond to setbacks that defines you not just in football but in life generally. The effort of the players in fighting back to once again top the league table is exceptional. This is particularly relevant when you consider the facilities and financial resources of some of our rivals, today’s opponents being just one example. We all now the painful truth is that it all counts for nothing if we don’t achieve promotion come April. I can assure you that the whole club is so focused and committed to trying to achieve that from the Board downwards. The will inevitably be ups and downs along the way and we have to stay united to give ourselves the best possible chance . You the supporters are so integral to us achieving success and I know the players can count on your ongoing support starting today.

CLUB CHAPLAIN
H
appy new year to all at Poole Town, and to our visitors today from Dorset rivals Weymouth. Most of us begin the year with high hopes. In football terms, at PTFC we hope that a healthy lead in the league will bear fruit in a championship and promotion, and all at the club will be working hard to make that a reality. In life outside football, people have hopes too numerous to list here – the popularity of gyms in January bears witness to that, although not everyone is willing to put in the hard work they need to make hope become reality! All of us are hoping for a new start in some way or other. As a Christian, my hopes for the new year are built on the foundations of things God has already done. A few days ago, at Christmas, we celebrated the fact that God showed himself as a person in Jesus, not in a palace or a hospital but amid the mess and smell of a stable. So whatever mess might characterise our situation, God is with us as we hope for better times ahead. You may be wondering why a football club would link up with
a chaplain. Many clubs do, from non-league to Premier League. Football clubs are gatherings of people, from spectators to players, who experience the ups and downs of life, and my previous experience as a chaplain is that people sometimes want to talk or pray about things as they arise. I am available for anyone who would like to get in touch. You can reach me on 01202-740235 or email mail@ pricefamilypoole.plus.com, or see me at Tatnam. A few words about me... My ‘day job’ is Vicar of St John’s Church on Ashley Road, where you will always be welcome. I am married to Becky, and we have two grown-up children. My woolly hats are red and white, but I confess that’s because I am a life-long Arsenal supporter. Happy New Year! Rev David Price

COMMERCIAL MATTERS Our last scheduled home game fell foul of the weather and the Saturday’s result before that was disappointing 3-3 draw with Slough. On Boxingday we were held 0-0 at Frome. However, we still remain 12 points clear of Chippenham and 15 points clear of 4th placed Weymouth who we play today. Come on you Dolphins, let’s get the win and put more points between us and the chasing pack and remind everyone just who is the PRIDE OF DORSET. I would like to thank The Funky Peach for Sponsoring the Slough Match and The Daniels/Wigmore Family who sponsored the Ball. Between them, they chose Jack Dickson as their Man of the Match. For today’s game, Portman Stone are once again Match Sponsor and the Ball has been sponsored by CityIR. Our Mascots today are Mackenzie West and the lads from Drift MicroBar. Let’s hope you all have a great afternoon and hopefully the right result. We are now sold out for Match Sponsors for the remainder of this season. We have a limited number of MatchBall packages left this season, including the Kings Lynn game on 16th Jan and Biggleswade on the 6th Feb. Please check the website for availability. If you or your company would like to sponsor the Ball (£60), Player (£85), or know someone who would like to be a Mascot (£40) please get in contact. At the time of writing, Paul Ayley (Kitman) and Matt Fisher (Physio) are still looking for a Sponsor. Keep hold of your Matchday ticket today and show it at Poole Stadium tonight, to gain free entry to the Greyhound racing. If you have never tried Tatnam Trebble, I promise you it will be the most tasty Cheddar you have ever had. Seek our Martin Smith on the Cheese table at home games. Try one of his Pork pies as well, you will not be disappointed. Orders being taken for Christmas. The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost
is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to shape the future of the club. Interested parties are to contact any member of the board. I would like to thank all of you who are using http://pooletownfootballclub.easysearch.org. uk/ as your search engine. We earn 1/2p per search and that amounts to a couple of pounds per week. That combined with http:// www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/pooletownfootballclub/ we have raised over £1,000 for the club. Thanks to all those that support these initiatives. We are planning another Legends Night (Hall of Fame). This is taking place on 19th February. Speak to Dick behind the bar for further details.
