CAPTAIN'S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain

A

fternoon all, so another nail biting bank holiday weekend down, we do like to make things interesting don’t we. First of the two games was the home game with Stratford, a team that surprised us massively. Time after time teams come to Tatnam, sit 10 men behind the ball and say “go on then break us down” but Stratford were different, they went for it, a team with nothing to lose, completely gambled, basically played the whole game with 3 up and went for it. Something we hadn’t expected at all. The conditions helped there cause with their 1st goal, a 40 yard effort moving all over the place. We did get back into the game but then instead of going on to win it, they went all out to win it too, leaving numbers forward they attacked us and an error cost us and they took the 3 points. We had to move on quickly, we only had 48hours before derby day. Weymouth away is a fixture we all enjoy and we had to make sure we were mentally right, we had no time to be down. The gaffer gave us a good positive team

talk, made a couple of changes and helped us believe we could pick ourselves up and kick on again. That’s exactly what we then proved over the next 90 minutes. We worked so hard for each other, we got our early goal and then it was a real team effort. We showed fantastic team spirit a fought so hard to earn a massive clean sheet, this was so big for us after Saturday’s result. We now need to go again, game by game and nothing more. Nobody should be looking at any fixture past this one Chesham are a good side and on their day can be very dangerous, they proved this beating Bristol rovers away earlier this season in the FA cup. Get behind the lads, the support at Weymouth was the best I’ve ever heard it, if that can continue that really could kick us on. Up the Dolphins Whisk

T

he ups and downs of football, the ups and downs of being a Poole fan(many more ups of course in that respect!) and even the ups and downs of life generally were all encapsulated in just three days over the last Easter weekend. The most joyful day in the whole Christian calendar Easter Sunday was a pretty miserable one for those that follow the Dolphins as the cruel memories of a totally out of character inept performance by the lads the previous day against Stratford festered on our minds and refused to go awayhad we blown our chances? Mathematically of course not but psychologically and with a fierce battle away at Weymouth in prospect-there was perhaps more than enough to be concerned about. We reckoned without the character and determination of our players, their resilience and their desperation to put things right-how could we have doubted them? A quite superb show of grit and battling qualities coupled with a text book headed goal from Marvin proved too much for Weymouth and put our destiny right back in our own hands again. Awesome! For the next episode in the drama that is unfolding as we strive for that league title we welcome the players officials and supporters of Chesham Utd FC to Tatnam. Chesham are in a good run of form and will definitely be looking to uphold the integrity of the Division by doing their best to topple us-more of that courage and drive from Monday please guys-that together with a reasonable display of the ability in our side’s locker should hopefully be enough to secure

the three points come five o clock today. With so many of the teams at the top having to play each other over the next few weeks there will as sure as eggs are eggs be plenty of twists and turns to come-let’s hope thy happen to other clubs and that ours are behind us! Although nothing to do with us I must extend both an apology and a huge thank you to our travelling support at Weymouth. For you all to be subject to a last minute unexpected announcement of segregation and to thereby deprived of seating and access to the bar was unacceptable-with warning and the ability to make other arrangements no problem but the way it was done was not good and all credit to our fans for the good natured way it was accepted and also the brilliant support the team received from behind the goal-that means so much to the players. Tuesday we are off to Paulton-ko 7.30 not 7.45,and next Saturday we have another showdown in prospect away at Hitchin. Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50 tickets. Chris

arvin Brooks scored for the second time this season against Weymouth, as the Dolphins triumphed over Weymouth again this Bank Holiday. Ashan Holgate was given his first start in Poole colours, with Abdoulai Baggie still absent. Thus, Luke Roberts moved to the wing and Jack Dickson dropped to the bench. Whilst Weymouth had the first chance of the game, Poole were quick to even things up – Jamie Whisken heading wide from a well struck Devlin Free Kick.

Next up for the Dolphins was goalscorer Brooks, who managed to pass the ball before being clattered into, setting up Luke Roberts – whose run was prevented by a Weymouth defender, the loose ball bouncing possibly off a hand, but nothing was given. Will Spetch would be next up for a penalty claim, as he thought he had been fouled when he crossed in a low ball – the referee waving play on, leading to Burbidge firing a shot towards goal, with Holgate fastening onto the effort, unable to send

YESTERYEAR

I

n the words of the great John Lennon and Paul McCartney, “it was 20 years ago today”(ish) that our beloved Dolphins brought to an end one of the worst/greatest losing streaks in Association Football, drawing 0-0 at the County Ground against our old foes from Bashley, ending a run of 39 straight defeats. It’s 1995/96. The previous season we finished third bottom, saving our Southern League lives in the last couple of games. We went into the match on Saturday, April 6 on the back of three defeats: 4-0, 6-0 and 5-0. Against Tonbridge at home, we had our best result for a couple of months, losing 0-1. Just to put you all in the picture of how poor we were, our goals for/against read: GF 17, GA 188! If you include cup goals, it read GF 18, GA 218. Quite phenomenal and the press lapped it up, with a variety of Fleet Street’s finest travelling to Dorset with the smell of blood in their nostrils. This group of Fleet Street’s finest included Kenneth Wooldstenholme, famous for his “they think it’s all over...” line. Even I got collared, as a semi-regular phone guest on Danny Baker’s Radio 5 Sunday show. The game was watched by our biggest crowd of the season, around 400. The game began and our present kit manager, Paul Ayley, and myself had spent the entire season cheering corners and free-kicks because, with only nine home goals across the season, there wasn’t a lot to shout about. We got through to half-time level by more luck than judgement. In the second half, our hapless custodian Jamie Smith

was transformed into a superhero, pulling off two magnificent reflex saves. To add to the tension, Louis Harewood was sent off for violent conduct with two minutes and stoppage time left. Paul and myself were always checking our watches from 30 minutes in, so this was the longest five minutes in the club’s history. The whistle came and we’d done it... a 0-0 draw was never celebrated with such enthusiasm. It meant we were in the Guinness Book of Records, sharing the worst losing run with Stockport United. The season ended with a 5-0 home defeat to Braintree. The rest is history, Keith Miller and our secretary Mark Willis resigned, as did most of the squad. We were relegatred into the Hants League Division 1. In came Trevor Parker as gaffer and secretary Bill Reid, but staying on were Clive & Arthur Robbins and Chris Reeves. And here we are, nearly 20 years to the day. We still don’t have a permanent home as such and hopefully about to leave the Southern League again. I’ll end with another Lennon McCartney tune: “it’s getting better all the time”. TEAM: J Smith, Launder, Hillyer, Harewood, Purkiss, Cuffie, Shaw (c), C Smith, Collinge, Diaz, S Smith By Steve Park

elcome to today’s match, particularly to our visitors from Chesham – we wish you a safe journey home, and I wish everyone Happy Easter. As football supporters we experience the ups and downs of life in the fluctuating fortunes of our teams. At Poole Town, our optimism after the resounding Bedworth victory gave way to despondency after the Stratford defeat, and hope again after the Weymouth game. Everyone experiences both highs and lows in life. When the risen Jesus said to his disciples “Peace be with you”, he wasn’t saying that their lives would always be peaceful – indeed we know that was often not the case. But he was saying that it’s possible to have peace with God whatever our circumstances, as a result of historic realities rather than our fluctuating feelings. One of the great things about the Christian faith is that trust in God is based on the rock solid foundation of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. If Jesus’ resurrection had somehow been

faked, the authorities could simply have produced Jesus’ body to kill off Christianity once and for all. But of course they couldn’t, and people around the world still celebrate God’s love shown on Good Friday and His power revealed on Easter day. Among the most memorable examples that I have heard of a person knowing peace with God even in a very tough situation was a soldier caught up in a fierce firefight with friends dying all around him. He said peace was possible even then because his faith was built on reality rather than feelings. Whatever the ups and downs of life that you experience, I hope you will know the reality of God’s love and power – Happy Easter! COMMERCIAL MATTERS We had a mixed Easter weekend, with a disappointing 1-2 defeat at home to Stratford and then a great battling 0-1 win in El Jurassico at Weymouth on Monday. With other results largely going our way, we are once again one point behind Redditch, with a game in hand. As they play 4th placed Lemington today and 3rd placed Hitchin play away at in form 5th placed Kettering, then the table could look quite different at 5pm today. It is

absolutely critical that we win again today and keep the pressure on the other teams in the top five. Come on you Dolphins. I would like to thank Meridian Leisure Services Direct Ltd for Sponsoring the Stratford game and Andrew Keen of CityIR who sponsored the Ball. Also thanks to Bobby Griffin who was our Mascot on the day (Grandson of Martin (Cheeso) Smith) and to all of you who contributed to the Julias House collection on the day. For today’s game, we have Funky Peach back again as Match Sponsor (See their Advert Elsewhere) and

35

the Ball is once again sponsored by Chillfrome Delicatessen represented by our friend Martin Smith (Cheeso), also see his advert. Today’s Mascot is Lewis Rose (see details elsewhere). Let’s hope you all have a great afternoon and hopefully the right result. We are now completely sold out for Match and Ball Sponsors for the remainder of this season and all the players and staff have been sponsored. I would like to thank all those companies and individuals that have supported us over this season. We have just one Mascot (£40) place left available this season – Bideford on Tuesday 19th April (our last home game of the season). Please get in contact if you are interested. If you have never tried Tatnam Trebble, I promise you it will be the most tasty Cheddar you have ever had. Seek out Martin Smith (Cheeso) on the Cheese table at home Saturday games. Try one of his Pork pies as well, you will not be disappointed. Chillfrome and Martin have sponsored the Ball today. Have you heard about Last Man Standing? Just £10 to enter, pick a premier League side to win, get it right and stay in. Winner takes half the pot and the club gets the other half. It’s as simple as that. See Pippa for details.
