CAPTAIN'S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain

A

fternoon All, what a day this could be in the clubs history. One more win and we are there, promotion! Something we’ve pushed for for so long now. It’s so important we carry our run on from the previous few weeks, the boys have been incredible. We’ve been like a steam train and have picked up points left right and centre, also keeping clean sheet after clean sheet along the way, that needs to continue today. We’re not there yet! Dunstable today will prove a stern test as they always are against us, we know what is at stake and know we will have to be at our best, but we our confident in ourselves as we have been all season long. We’ve done so well over the past week, 1st of all going to Hitchin who were on our tales, going down to nine men after two arguable sending offs, having our backs against the wall and fighting for our lives to get a huge point in a 0-0 draw. We then kicked on from that on another tough away trip to relegation fighting Stratford, a team fighting for

3

their lives, but once again we showed incredible togetherness to get the job done, a battling clean sheet and a moment of class from Luke Burbidge proving the difference. This was huge for us and we knew it. That along we others failing to win has put us in the position we are today, but we have to remember we have no right to just go and win this game, we’re going to need everything, including you fans who over the past month have really proved the difference and have sung us through. Today we need you more than ever, to really roar us over the line. Let’s make history! Up the Dolphins Whisk

BOARDROOM NOTES Chris Reeves Vice Chairman

T

he first thing I need to say in these notes is a massive thank you to our programme editor Jack Amey as after two years of producing first rate programmes game after game and having stamped his style on the publication in a real and meaningful way he is now through personal circumstances being forced to move on and this edition will be his last.I cannot thank Jack enough for what he has done. Over the years we have had a very high standard set by firstly Bill Reid and then Ian Claxton with the editions produced by Bill and Ian regularly winning awards so to say Jack had a hard act to follow is an understatement. Follow it he did thoughsuperbly! Thanks Jack. The King is dead- long live the King! Jack’s successor is Ben Bonsey who has assisted Jack with tonight’s edition and will produce his first ever programme in his own right for our final home game of the season here this coming Tuesday v Bideford ko 7.45. Welcome to the Club Ben and thanks for your enthusiasm in taking the job on. This afternoon we welcome the players officials and supporters of Dunstable Town to Tatnam for another vital tussle in our quest for the title. As ever Dunstable will be determined to get one over on us and Tom and Callum will no doubt have been stressing that to the players in the dressing room. After the events of Tuesday night, today could of course be the day when we clinch the League Championship and promotion to the National League South- no chickens counted of course and Tom probably is none too pleased that I mention it but

the fact is that is where the lads have got us with their efforts over this incredible season. Just one word for it all reallyAwesome!! Anyone remember Haskells Rec? Before the action gets underway today I have the great privilege of presenting a Hall of Fame certificate to a Poole Town legend-- Roger Bazeley. Roger and I had a great relationship when he was our manager and previously as a long serving totally committed player and skipper. I have penned a tribute to Roger elsewhere in this programme and I would urge anyone reading this who was not supporting the club in Rogers day to focus on my words to appreciate just what a big part in our history Roger has played. Don’t forget to come back to Tatnam in your hordes this coming Tuesday for our final home game ko7.45.A brilliant chance to let Tom Jamie and co know how much we appreciate what they have done this season. Finally- enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50 tickets Chris

om Killick guided Poole Town to within touching distance of the Southern League title – and then immediately phoned his mum to give her the good news. Luke Burbidge’s classy first-half strike earned Killick’s team a 1-0 win at Stratford on Tuesday, leaving them needing just three points from as many games to be crowned champions. Poole, who were languishing in the Hampshire League just 12 years ago, would guarantee promotion to National South if they were to beat Dunstable at Tatnam on Saturday. Under Killick, who has taken charge of more than 600 games, the Dorset club have already won three promotions and four league championships. Speaking to the Daily Echo at Stratford after he had contacted parents Romilly and Ian, Killick joked: “They get a little stressed about our results so I try to let them know quite quickly. If we lose, I don’t phone them for a while! “They normally know we have won if the phones goes straight after the game. They have really helped me over the years and always been there. “They aren’t really football fans but come to our home games. I love seeing them at games and, hopefully, they will be there on Saturday. “My dad isn’t a big football man but he likes players who are polite and intelligent. He doesn’t really understand who’s good and

7

who isn’t! “Sometimes, it is really refreshing to hear what he feels about things because it is a totally different view point.” Burbidge settled the nerves in the Poole camp when he netted with a 20-yard piledriver after 17 minutes, the win putting them six points clear of their nearest pursuers. Killick added: “There were a lot of nerves, particularly early on. It was an exceptional goal and I didn’t think they threatened us too much after that. We probably looked more likely to get the next goal. “There was so much desire and commitment from the players to see it through. When we needed to, we showed a tenacity and a collective determination and I was proud of the players for that.” Skipper Jamie Whisken told the Echo: “At this stage of the season, we don’t really care what games are like as long as we win. “It probably wasn’t the best for the fans and it wasn’t the best for us to play in. It was a massive win because we are under pressure. The changing room was absolutely buzzing and we just want to get the job done on Saturday now.” Dolphins: Hutchings, Tallack, Spetch, Lindsay, Whisken, Pettefer, Burbidge (Gleeson, 66), Devlin, Lee (Dickson, 58), Brooks, Roberts. Unused subs: Holgate, Gillespie, Rees (g/k).

MANAGER’S NOTES Tom Killick

First Team Manager After the defeat against Stratford 3 weeks ago we were rightly criticised in some quarters for what was a poor performance and result against a team in the lower reaches of the league. Since then the players have bounced back to gain a tough away win at Weymouth, a good home victory against an inform Chesham and a comfortable away victory at Paulton. We then went to Hitchin and battled so hard with nine men to get a deserved point before travelling all the way to Stratford on Tuesday night to grind out a truly gutsy 1-0 victory. 13 points from a possible 15 scoring 9 goals and conceding none. That sequence of results after a bitter disappointment at such a crucial stage of the season tells you all you need about the spirit and character of this group of players. It has left us within touching distance of our dream of promotion to the Conference South. However, I know it’s boring to say it but nothing has been achieved yet. The players need to remain focused and get the remaining points we need. We welcome

Dunstable to the Tatnam today and they will prove tough opponents. My belief, confidence and deep affection for this group of players has never wavered. I am proud of every one of them. They are a really close group with a desperate hunger for success. I hope we can have a big crowd here today to generate a really positive atmosphere for the players to drive them over the line. I think they deserve to succeed and I also think you our loyal and dedicated supporters deserve it too along with all those hard working people that run this great club. Enjoy the game. TOM

SECRETARY’S NOTES WELCOME BACK: Welcome back to Tatnam this afternoon for our latest game in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division. Today our visitors are Dunstable Town who have made the long trip from Bedfordshire. Welcome to all from Dunstable and our refereeing team who are from the Hampshire and IOW area we wish all a safe journey home. EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE + OTHER FOOTBALL NEWS: RED INSURE CUP WINNERS 2016: Merthyr Town are the 2015/2016 Red Insure Southern League Cup winners after defeating Cambridge City 7 – 1 on aggregate over the 2 leg final a total crowd of 543 watched the 2 games. EVO-STIK SOUTHERN MARCH TEAMS OF THE MONTH: PREMIER: Kettering Town. DIV 1 CENTRAL: Royston Town. DIV 1 SOUTH & WEST: Taunton Town. All the clubs receive a trophy + a 4.5 litre bottle of Bells Whisky. STEP 5 & 6 PROMOTION CANDIDATES: In the Midland League – Hereford won the big showdown at Alvechurch 1 – 2 on Thursday 7th to move back to the top and are now 4 points clear but the game was marred by crowd trouble as the home side missed a late penalty. Locally Salisbury in Wessex Premier won at Blackfield on Thursday 7th April by a 0 – 1 scoreline and sit 15 points clear of Blackfield with 2 games in hand. Following the Saturday games Portland Utd lead Wessex Division 1 by 5 points with games in hand. Over in the Western League in the Premier it would seem to be a 3 way battle between leaders Odd Down and chasers Barnstaple Town + Bristol Manor Farm, while in Western Division 1 it is Wells City at present best placed to win the title race. Also in the Western Premier Bridport boss, ex Reading striker Trevor Senior has

13

stepped down from the hot seat he was due to finish come the end of the season but has gone early. Over in the Hellenic Premier the title would seem to be with Kidlington who are leaving ex-Southern League side Thatcham Town and Flackwell Heath in their wake. Flackwell missed out on promotion last season after they refused promotion after being placed in a league which would have put them under financial pressures due to excessive travelling this in turn was the reason that Winchester City got a late call to fill the vacant place in Division 1 South & West. 2015/2016 FINAL FIXTURES: The date for the final home game v Bideford has been set for Tuesday 19th April with the final league game of the season an away trip to Cambridge City on Saturday 23rd April – remember that they ground share at St Ives Town FC. WITH THE CUP COMPETITIONS UNDERWAY PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR FIXTURE CHANGES. AWAY COACH TRAVEL NEWS: The next coach trip will be on Saturday 23rd April – St George’s Day when we travel to Cambridge City at St Ives Town and it will be an 8.45 am departure. Also see the travel page in today’s programme for more information on away travel. Main pick up point is by the Tatnam Coop at the end of Tatnam Rd. ROGER BAZELEY

O

n 6th March 2014 we held the first PTFC “Hall of Fame”induction night.the following Poole Town legends were the first award winners:- Ray Ames,Mark Baber,Derek Courtney,Tony Funnell,Leigh Phillips,Martyn Jones,Taffy Richardson and Stan Rickaby. There were three others who couldn’t be there that night- Shaun Brooks being one of them and Roger another.Shaun received his award earlier this season and it is Roger’s turn today. As I am putting these notes together it has just struck me that no less than five of the names mentioned above were signed by Roger during his time as our manager- does that not speak volumes?? Roger first signed for us in 1972.He ceased his playing career in 1976 through injury. He had clocked up 150 league appearances as a commanding centre back and scored no less than 18 league goals. He became initially reserve team manager and then very quickly accepted my offer to become the first team

manager. He stayed in that role until 1985 when he stepped down due to non football related issues.A resignation he tendered with great regret which was only equal led by my sadness in accepting it. We had some great times under his reign playing sparkling football at times with probably the most successful goal scoring partnerships in our history with the likes of Gary Manson,Derek Courtney,Tony Funnell,Tommy Paterson and Robbie Russell thrilling the Stadium faithful. We had three trips to Italy in the Anglo Italian Cup with him in charge.Roger lived and breathed Poole Town and alongside Tom is by far and away one of the two best managers I have ever had the privilege of working with in my four decades on the board of this great Club. Roger is a true Poole Town legend and a well deserved recipient of the honour of being inducted into our Hall of Fame.

COMMERCIAL MATTERS The results fell pefectly for us on Tuesday night, setting up what should be a memorable day today and hopefully a bumper crowd. Since the 3-0 home win over Chesham, we had the emphatic 0-4 away win at Paulton then the 9 man battling 0-0 result at Hitchin followed by the 0-1 win at Stratford. That means, a win today is enough to secure the Championship and Promotion to the National League South. Come on you Dolphins, we know you can do it. I would like to thank Chillfrome Delicatessen for Sponsoring Ball in the Chesham game and for choosing 2 goal hero, Marvin Brooks as MOTM. Also thanks to Lewis Rose who was our lucky Mascot on the day. For today’s game, we have Portman Stone back again as Match Sponsor (See their Advert Elsewhere) and the Ball is sponsored by The Magicard. Today’s Mascots are Eve Cann, Dexter Blake and his younger Brother Fletcher Blake. Let’s hope you all have a great afternoon and hopefully the right result. We are now completely sold out for Match and Ball Sponsors and Mascots for the remainder of this

35

season and all the players and staff have been sponsored. I would like to thank all those companies and individuals that have supported us over this season. If you have never tried Tatnam Trebble, I promise you it will be the most tasty Cheddar you have ever had. Seek out Martin Smith (Cheeso) on the Cheese table at home Saturday games. Try one of his Pork pies as well, you will not be disappointed. Chillfrome and Martin have sponsored the Ball today. Have you heard about Last Man Standing? Just £10 to enter, pick a premier League side to win, get it right and stay in. Winner takes half the pot and the club gets the other half. It’s as simple as that. See Pippa for details. Finally I would like to thank an unsung hero - Jack Amey - for producing this programme over the last two seasons. This is Jacks last programme for us and we wish him the very best of luck in his future endeavours.
