vening all, so we go in to tonight’s on the back of a tough week for us on the pitch, a week we need to quickly learn and move on from starting with a win tonight. We lost our last 3, all on the road but we have to take 1 positive from it if we can and that is that only 1 of the games was in the league. Yes cup runs are nice and bring great income in to the club but the league is our aim, that was our target at the start of the season and that remains. We’re not going to win the FA cup and very doubtful the FA trophy but we can win our league and that’s what we aim to do. So tonight we need to get straight back to winning ways, it’s nice to have a fixture at home after a lot of travelling of late, it’s seemed like we’ve spent the whole week on the coach. Whatever side is put out this evening I expect us to have more than enough to win the game, the youngsters

3

at the club have real prospect and it’s great to see some of them breaking into the first team. If they are called upon tonight I’m sure they’ll once again show why they are held in such high regard. Either way I want to see a win for the Dolphins and in to the next round. Get behind the boys Whisk

BOARDROOM NOTES Chris Reeves Vice Chairman

T

onight we extend a warm welcome to the players officials and supporters of Shaftesbury FC for this Dorset Senior Cup tie. Hopefully they will enjoy the occasion and I have no doubt but that they will contribute to a fine evening’s entertainment. This competition is one that we at Poole have always taken seriously. The splendid trophy that is awarded to the winners of the competition reflects appropriately the level of Dorset bragging rights that success in the final brings with it. We have had a fair degree of success in recent years in securing those bragging rights and this season’s journey to a repetition of that success starts tonight. I am expecting Tom to field a young side this evening - that policy has already produced a spectacular 3-1 victory at Dorchester in the Red Insure Cup and the youngsters deserve another shot at fulfilling a first team fixture. Last Wednesday our superbly talented u21 side comfortably dismissed Gosport 5-1 here in their first league fixture so add that to the Dorchester victory and there is little doubt but that they are chafing at the bit for another chance to show what they can do. Saturday’s lone goal defeat at Merthyr in the FA Trophy was bitterly disappointing. After 84 minutes we were looking good for a replay and hopefully progress in what is a financially lucrative competition. It brought to an end a wretched eight days of three defeatsnot what we are used to. We have had the squad depleted by Gilly’s injury,by Jamie Gleeson’s injury and also Steve Devlin was not able to be involved at

Chesham and Merthyr. To be deprived of three such talented players is immense. Devs is back now and we must hope that Gilly and Jamie are soon fit enough to return to the fold. This coming Saturday we are away once more this time to Dunstable in the League and then a week tonight we travel to Weymouth in the Red Insure Cup. Don’t forget the Sportsmanship Dinner on 12th November - see elsewhere in the programme for full details. That night is so crucial to us in financial terms and it is always good to see a clutch of diehard supporters among those attending. Finally we can trust Tom and the lads to put our recent run of defeats firmly to bed very quickly - of that I have no doubt. We remain top of the league and that is where we intend to stay! Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50 tickets. Chris

oole remain in just three competitions, as they fell to a late defeat in South Wales. Still without 4 key players, (Gillespie, Devlin, Gleeson, Connell) The Dolphins lost out to an 84th minute winner, in an extremely tight game. Merthyr also made quite a few changes from the team that played at Tatnam, as they were also suffering a injury crisis. Poole started the brighter team, their early pressure ending up in a corner, which resulted at multiple Dolphins flinging their feet, swinging at the ball, but Merthyr managed to clear their lines. At the oth-

7

er end, Walker was just able to get a toe to a dangerous throughball, that would have seen the Poole defense split wide open. Slowly Merthyr were growing into the game, and would have the ball in the back of the net – a dangerous free kick was met by an unmarked attacker, but play was rightly called back for offside. Poole would go the closest out of the two sides in the first half, Luke Roberts firing just wide after some decent linkup play around the box. Poole perhaps edged the first half, but neither team could do anything particularly

Facebook: ‘Poole Town Football Club (Official)’

MATCH REPORT dangerous with the ball. The Second half started completely differently – neither team could do anything at all with the ball, passes sent wayward, both overhit and underhit balls flying round the pitch, possession changing hands frequently. It would take until around the hour mark for the game to settle down, and Merthyr almost took the lead when Scotcher struck the post from a dangerous free kick. Burbidge would fire a Poole Free Kick into the welcoming arms of Bradley at the other end, and it looked like this one was heading for a replay. Poole almost caught the Martyrs out with a quick throw, but the hosts quickly switched back on at the vital moment to keep the scores level. This would be Poole’s last dangerous piece of play until the last 5 minutes, as Merthyr were slowly piling on the pressure, committing more and more forward. Their consistent battering of the Poole backline would finally produce a goal, as

Gethin Jones rose up at the back post to head home and win the tie for the hosts. Toby Holmes, a substitute for Marvin Brooks, had a chance to bring the Martyrs back down to Tatnam on Tuesday, but he couldn’t get a clean shot off after a brilliant run on to a dangerous throughball. Poole’s equaliser would not come, and thus Merthyr are into the next round of Non-League’s premier cup competition. Poole’s next game is another cup competition, as they entertain Shaftesbury in the Dorset Senior Cup, looking to set up a Quarter Final tie against either Bridport or Sherborne. The Fan’s View Jack Tanner A gutsy performance saw the lads fall just short, but tonight is another game, and a chance to see more of these new promising young guns. The County Cup may not be extremely prestigious, but silverware is always nice! Hopefully results will go our way again sooner rather than later!

SECRETARY’S NOTES WELCOME BACK: Welcome back to Tatnam this evening for our latest Cup game of the season and tonight we welcome Shaftesbury Town from the Dorset Premier League in Dorset Senior Cup 1st Rd action. Welcome to all from Shaftesbury and our refereeing team who are all from the local area and we wish all a safe journey home. TONIGHT’S FORMAT: Tonight’s game will be played over 90 minutes with 30 minutes extra time if required and settled on the night by penalties at the last resort. The winners of tonight’s game will advance to the Quarter Final stage with a home time v either Sherborne Town or Bridport which is due to be played on Tuesday 1st December. EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE NEWS: Just 2 clubs from the Southern League made it through to the FA Cup 1st Rd Proper - Chesham Utd and Didcot Town. Chesham travel to Bristol Rovers and Didcot entertain Exeter City. EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER FIXTURE NEWS: Next up is this Saturday the 7th November when we are on the road again this time to Dunstable Town in the league. Then we have another away trip this time just down the coast to Weymouth for a Red Insure 2nd Rd Southern League Cup tie on Tuesday 10th November this will probably be another chance to see the U21’s in action again and see if they can repeat their success as per the Dorchester game. Saturday 14th is a very rare beast of late when we actually have a home league game v Cambridge City!! In fact since the 10th October we will have played at home just twice in 10 games.

Tuesday 17th we have one of our shorter road trips when we travel to Chippenham Town with more home action on Saturday 21st with St Neots Town the visitors. The rearranged trip to Histon in Cambridgeshire is on Tuesday 24th November and this is followed by another long trip to the Midlands on Saturday 28th when we journey up to Kettering Town. The home game v Hitchin Town has a new date of Tuesday 22nd December. All the teams we are due to play over the next week or two also went out of the Trophy on Saturday so the fixture road is clear for now. WITH THE CUP COMPETITIONS GETTING UNDERWAY PLEA SE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR FIXTURE CHANGES. CUP NEWS: Dorset Senior Cup - 1st Rd draw – Home to Shaftesbury Town on Tuesday 3rd November – 7.45 pm. POOLE TOWN U21’s: They got off to a winning start in their league campaign on Wednesday 28th October with a fine 5 – 1 home win v Gosport Borough goals from Toby Holmes (3) + Taylor Leonard and Anthony Harris. AWAY COACH TRAVEL NEWS: The coach for Dunstable should leave no later than 9.45 am. No team coach for Weymouth but hopefully one will run to Chippenham details asap. See the poster board. Main pick up point is by the Tatnam Coop at the end of Tatnam Rd. As before bookings at the club office (behind the main dressing room block) see Bill or Daphne. YOURS IN SPORT – BILL REID.

C0MMERCIAL MATTERS

O

ur last home game seems an age ago. It resulted in a 3-0 win against Cirencester. Since then we had the emphatic 1-5 win at Dorchester follwed by FA Cup heartbreak, losing 0-2 at Whitehawk. A return to league football saw us beaten 3-1 at Chesham and then on Saturday we unfortunately exited the FA Trophy 1-0 at Merthyr. Tonight we take on local opposition in the shape of Shaftesbury Town in the Dorset Senior Cup. Come on you Dolphins, let’s get back to winning ways! I would like to thank Portman Stone for Sponsoring the Cirencester Match and choosing Steve Devlin as their Man of the Match. Also Cliff and Cathy Goddard who sponsored the Ball and as season ticket holders, have secured reserved seats in the stand for the rest of the season. I would also like to thank Ellie Bumford who celebrated her 50th Birthday as our Mascot for the Cirencester game. For today’s game, we welcome a new sponsor On the Roxx as Match Sponsor (you will see and hear more of them in the coming weeks) and the Ball has been sponsored by Stephen Allen and Carol Garland. Let’s hope you all have a great evening and hopefully a Poole Town win. I would also like to thank Sylvia Palmer who has sponsored Michael Walker and Steve Devlin this season. By the time this match comes around,

we could be sold out of Match Sponsors packages and only have a few Match Balls and Mascots left this season. If you or your company would like to sponsor a Ball (£60), Player (£85), or know someone who would like to be a Mascot (£40) please get in contact. At the time of writing, Jack Dickson is still looking for a Sponsor and we are looking for Mascot for the home game against Cambridge in the League on Saturday 14th November. The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to shape the future of the club. Interested parties are to contact any member of the board. The annual Sportsmans Dinner will be on Thursday November 12th with Michael Otton providing the entertainment and details elsewhere in this programme.
