CAPTAIN’S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain
E
vening all, so after a week in which involved a lot of travelling and some horrendous conditions we’re back at Tatnam after collecting six points better off out of a possible nine. We had a great win here last sat in the match I was suspended in, 3-0 against St Neots, we were very good at both ends. Will Spetch stepped in to my slot and I thought he did brilliantly. They have gone on to pick up some good results since and prove they are still a top side so that was a great 3 points. Tuesday saw us with a long old trip to Histon, traffic was horrendous and we arrived to the game very late, with little time to prepare and get ready I never expected us to start like we did. How we were 0-3 up after 15mins I’ll never know, the boys were brilliantly and ruthless with every chance. One side was going to get a hiding off us sooner or later and it happened to be Histon, it had been coming. An I’m deadly honest when I say 0-7 flattered them. It could have been 12! Onto Kettering away, the club put us up Friday evening up there which was good of them, otherwise would have been a lot of hectic travelling in a week. It’s always nice to have that now and again as its good for the lads to bond and brings us closer. When I say closer I mean, imagine me and walks, two 6ft 4 centre halfs in a thatched cottage room where the door height was 4ft and so was the bed length. It gave the lads a good
3
laugh anyway. Luckily we were moved, but hey things like this are good for team spirit. Unfortunately the game itself didn’t go how we wanted, the pitch was like a cow field, incredible. It was non league at its best/worst. It was very hard for either team to play much football on the floor and to make it worse the wind was swirling. It was always going to be a 1 goal game and it could have gone either way, unfortunately this time it wasn’t ours, but no time for our heads to drop, were still top and we move on. Sadly we lost in the Dorset Senior Cup to Sherborne. The young Dolphins put on a very good show for the crowd but the result did not reflect that. On a positive note, we welcome Lee Wort to the club on a one-month loan deal from Gosport Borough to help us over the busy festive period. Welcome Lee! Up the Dolphins Whisk

here can be no bigger game in any league than a clash between first and second-that is what this afternoon’s fixture with Leamington was shaping up to be until Tuesday night. In the games played that evening a solitary Charlie Griffin goal for Chippenham at Bideford saw the Robins sneak into second spot ahead of today’s visitors to Tatnam who themselves dropped two precious points in a surprise 2-2 home draw with St Neots. We of course have completed our league fixtures against both Chippenham and St Neots so the stronger those two clubs get and the more points they take off our rivals for the title the better! The players officials and supporters of Leamington are of course most welcome to Tatnam and we trust they have had a good journey here and have a safe trip back home. Our opponents today are a big name in non league football and it is no surprise to see them doing so well this season. At the time of writing these notes there is the possibility that we might have a new striker in our ranks today. A player that has been on Tom’s radar for a couple of seasons now. If he has joined us it will be on a month’s loan to tide us over the frenetic December Christmas/ New Year period when we have no less than seven games. We have been able to bid for this player only because his wages have been fully covered by a donation from our marvellous Supporters Club .When the chance arose to sign him it was obviously outside of what we as a Board of Directors could responsibly commit
the club but the Supporters Club have come good in a big way,so if the lad is making his Poole debut today it is as a result of their generosity. Hot on the heels I might add of a superb £3000 donation to our finances to assist with essential works around the ground. Thank you guys what would we do without you?! After today we are back herein Tuesday with another six pointer this time v Hungerford ko 7.45 whilst next Saturday we travel to Bedworth. In the week just put gone we lost a loyal servant when James Wood made the decision to leave his role as assistant manager.J ames will always be one of us- his playing record and his time as Tom’s number two guarantee that. We have parted on the best of terms and we wish him well in whatever he does in the future. He will always be welcome at Tatnam. Finally it would not be right to let these notes pass without mention of a superb display from the Clubs youngsters who really rattled the cage of Western Premier League Sherborne last Tuesday night eventually going down 2-1 after extra time in the Dorset Senior Cup quarter final .It is a measure of the lads quality that a predominantly u18 side were disappointed at not beating their so much more experienced opponents. Our future would appear to be in good hands. Enjoy the game and do t forget the 50:50 tickets.

oday we welcome st Neots to the Tatnam. They are a talented team and it was a closely fought affair in the away fixture which we managed to win. The league table looks quite good for us at the moment but we need to be relentless in our pursuit of success and not become complacent. Our last two matches have produced two victories. Against Cambridge I thought we were very good particularly in the first half. However, we were rather wasteful when it came to the goal scoring opportunities that we had and nearly paid the price for that. It’s probably been a failing of ours for some time now that we are not converting a high enough percentage of the chances we are creating and that needs to change . It’s something we plan to work on and I’m confident we can improve. Chippenham was not a game for the purists! However Jack Dickson, who is an exceptional young talent. scored a great goal and then we defended heroically in the second half to get the points. I was proud of the play-
9
ers and the desire they showed to fight for the points. I think it shows what it means to them as a group and how much they crave success. We need to back up things today with another three points and hope results go our way elsewhere. We are have already put a good number of points between us and some good sides in the league which will be difficult for them to peg back. We know there is so much more to do but the players are fully focused and motivated which are good qualities to have. Please try and make us much noise as possible today and create an atmosphere that helps us and hinders the opposition. It makes a big difference Enjoy the game Tom

MEET THE OPPOSITION Paul Holleran (Manager) Managed Brakes since November 2009, taking the team to a play-off spot in his first full season, and after winning the Southern League Premier Division Championship in 2013 he managed at Step Two in the Conference North for the first time, achieving a respectable 13th position. A UEFA coach who moved into management early due to injury, Paul achieved initial success at Kings Norton Town before becoming first team coach and subsequently manager at Solihull Borough and leading them to promotion. 2004 saw a move to Halesowen Town, where he guided them to promotion, two Senior Cups and the First Round of FA Cup. Paul has also managed Rushall Olympic, taking them to two play-off spots and the 4th Qualifying Round of FA Cup for the first time in their history. Tim Holland (Coach) He is hugely experienced having been involved playing and coaching in non-league football since 1972. Tim had a football career of 18 years which included playing for Solihull Borough, Padget Rangers, Highgate and his zenith being for Bromsgrove Rovers in the old Southern League. A schoolteacher by profession he has successfully managed school, district and county teams. He was Youth team coach at Sutton Coldfield Town before progressing to the first team. This season will be his fifth year on the coaching team at Leamington with the aim of repeating 12-13 season, lifting the Southern Premier League title. Ian King (Coach) Paul Holleran announced in November 2015 that Ian King had accepted his offer to join the coaching staff at the club. Ian, who spent a short spell as a player at Leamington towards the end of the 2011/2012 season, has been around the club since the early weeks of the season, but will now take up a position working alongside Holleran and first team coach Martyn Naylor. Having only retired from playing in the last couple of seasons, 40 year old Ian has had previous coaching experience working for Birmingham City and also at Sydney FC in Australia, where he also played for APIA Leichhardt after moving down under to pursue a career as a PE teacher. He currently works for the Football League, overseeing education programmes. Martyn Naylor (Coach/Defender) Signed initially on a short term loan deal in October 2012 to bolster the squad, Martyn is an experienced defender who has played for both Telford United clubs, in the Football League for Shrewsbury Town, and also spent a successful 6 year spell in Wales with The New Saints as part of Championship winning sides and also playing in European football. More recently he has played for Worcester City and Rushall Olympic. His experience was vital to a relatively young squad in our promotion season. Martyn unfortunately damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in training early 2013-14 season and was out for the rest of the campaign. However, he continued his association helping with coaching and is now fully recovered. Pete Denham (Physiotherapist) Pete linked up with Brakes after leaving Solihull Moors in Summer 2014. A supporter of Moor Green since childhood he became their Assistant Physio in 1995, joining Tamworth in 1998 after becoming fully qualified. He spent 6 seasons with the Lambs as they won the Southern League and reached the FA Trophy final, before returning to Moor Green in 2004, remaining as the club merged with Solihull Borough in 2007. Then came a move to Halesowen Town in 2009 as Rob Elmes, who had been Assistant boss at Solihull, took Pete with him to The Grove, where he spent 4 seasons before returning to Solihull Moors. Tony Breeden (Goalkeeper) Tony makes a second return to the NWG after a season with rivals Solihull Moors. Originally he returned to Leamington in Summer 2013 after spending the previous 18 months playing in the Conference Premier Division with Kidderminster Harriers (28 appearances) and Tamworth (43 appearances) As one of Paul Holleran’s first signings when he arrived at Leamington in October 2009, Tony made 82 appearances for Brakes in his first spell at the club, memorably scoring a goal from his own penalty area in a match against Chesham United in April 2011. His previous clubs include Rushall Olympic and Sutton Coldfield Town.
James Fry (Defender) James Fry has spent two previous loan spells with the Brakes, the first being unfortunately cut short by an ankle ligament injury. He returned to the club again last season and made 26 appearances, scoring twice in a 4-0 win over Oxford City last Boxing Day. James spent time on loan at Kidderminster Harriers after his loan expired at Leamington but suffered a serious ankle injury and although released from his contract at Birmingham City during the summer, the club very kindly allowed him to complete his rehabilitation with them. Now fully fit and looking to kick-start his career Connor Gudger (Defender) Paul Holleran moved swiftly to fill the left back slot vacated by former skipper Stephan Morley by signing former Coventry City youngster Connor Gudger from Vanarama Conference North rivals Worcester City in February 2015. The 24 year old has played locally since his release from the Sky Blues, spending 3 seasons at Tamworth and also time on loan at Hinckley United, Cambridge City and most recently Barwell, where he also spent the second half of last season after leaving The Lambs. Connor signed for Worcester in the close season but had the opportunity to make his mark at the New Windmill Ground following Morley’s decision to leave. Jamie Hood (Defender) Jamie first joined Leamington in September 2010 from Halesowen Town, and formed a strong partnership with Liam Daly in the centre of defence that was pivotal in the Southern League Premier Division title winning season of 2012/2013. Making 112 appearances in total and scoring 5 goals for us in his first spell, Barwell will be disappointed to lose Jamie, who scored in his last appearance for them in a 2-1 victory over Coalville Town in the Westerby Cup Final at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium at the end of May. Over his two seasons at Kirkby Road Jamie made 82 appearances and scored 3 goals for Barwell. James Mace (Defender) James initially joined Brakes on trial during summer 2011 but impressed to such an extent that he was quickly snapped up by Paul Holleran, and has played an integral part over the last three campaigns. James is comfortable at either right back or centre back, possesses a good turn of pace, is snappy in the challenge and made 68 appearances for Hinckley United in the Blue Square Conference North in the two seasons prior to joining Leamington and was previously with Atherstone Town. He was voted the ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ the season before last after narrowly missing out on the Supporters’ award. Jamie Tank (Defender) 21 Year-old Jamie is the son of former Brake Darran Tank, who made over 70 appearances for Brakes along with a spell as Assistant Manager after joining the club in 2004, so has long connections with the club. He started his career with Walsall aged 13, playing with the juniors and Under 18s before being offered a contract in June 2011 and captaining both the Youth and Reserve teams, Jamie was handed a first team squad number at 17 before In the summer of 2012 he transferred to Wolves for an initial fee of £20 000, playing in the Under 21 Development Squad at Molineux, but was released in the summer of 2014. He signed for the Brakes in July 2014 after playing in several of the pre-season friendlies. Jack Edwards (Defender/Midfielder) Jack spent two seasons at Barwell, having made the step up from Midland Alliance football in 2012 after a successful season with Coventry Sphinx after beginning his career at our Warwickshire neighbours Studley. He is a young versatile player who was monitored for a while, and like many of the present squad is believed to have all the attributes to make the step up. He’s another local lad who is fast becoming a fans favourite. Comfortable playing in defensive positions or in midfield, Jack is a versatile utility player who is athletic and tidy on the ball. He captained Nottingham Trent University, and has had a good upbringing in football terms over the last few years, being involved with teams that play different styles of football. Ben George (Defender/Midfielder)

MEET THE OPPOSITION The 21 year old turned out for Brakes at right back in a friendly at Stratford Town last summer after his release from the Bescot Stadium, where he made 1 appearance for the first team in League One after working his way through the ranks. He went on to feature in over 20 games for our Warwickshire neighbours Rugby Town last season. Paul Holleran agreed a deal to bring Ben in from Rugby, where he was looked at last year after he left Walsall but he had a couple of offers in pre-season to go on trial at other clubs which he took up. Last season probably did not turn out as he would have liked, but he could be an asset to the Brakes as he can operate in a number of positions in defence or midfield. Joe Magunda (Defender/Midfielder) Leamington born Joe joined his home town club in the summer of 2012 after winning the Southern League Premier Division Championship with Brackley Town, and he added a second medal to his collection the following season with some solid workmanlike performances in the heart of the Brakes midfield. At home in defence or in the middle of the park, Joe graduated from the Academy at Leicester City and featured for the Foxes reserve side before a loan spell at Conference side Woking in 2008. After his release from Leicester, Magunda made 21 appearances for Kings Lynn in 2009/2010 in the Northern Premier League before the Linnets were wound up in late 2009. He was one of a number of players snapped up by Jon Brady at Brackley, and became a fixture in the Saints side that reached the play offs in 2010. He has also been capped by England at Under 18 level. His achievements were rewarded with the ‘Managers Player of the Year Award’. Richard Taundry (Defender/Midfielder) Paul Holleran snapped up Richard after he left Solihull Moors towards the end of last season. It was seen as a major coup when he agreed to remain at the club for the 2015/2016 campaign, and that has been reinforced by some commanding performances during pre-season. Richard worked his way through the ranks at Walsall to make his first team debut at a young age and went on to make nearly 200 appearances for the Saddlers over 6 seasons before joining Worcester City in 2013 after a brief spell with Pelsall Villa. Richard is a versatile player who is able to operate in defence or midfield, and despite being only 26 he has a wealth of experience in the professional game which will surely be of benefit to Leamington. Lee Chilton (Midfielder) Lee signed for us from Halesowen Town in spring 2012, having also played for Tividale, AFC Telford, Hinckley United and Stafford Rangers. He is an attacking wide player with an eye for goal, something which was highlighted three seasons ago as he staged his own goal of the season competition with several stunning strikes. Lee Chilton re-joined the club in September 2015 after a short spell at Stourbridge, Joe Halsall (Midfielder) Manager Paul Holleran announced in November 2015, the club have signed midfielder Joe Halsall from Stratford Town. Joe is no stranger to Leamington FC, having featured in pre-season friendlies prior to the 2013/2014 season. The 26 year old captained near neighbours Stratford to the Midland Alliance title in 2013, leaving for spells at Evesham and Chasetown before returning to play a big part in their Southern League South & West play off success last season. He had scored three times for Town in the 2015-16 season prior to departing, and has had previous experience at Premier Division level with Redditch United. James Husband (Midfielder) Set to top 300 appearances for Leamington since signing in December 2005 whilst a student at nearby Warwick University, James is a skillful left-sided player who can play full-back or wide midfield, and he has won three promotions in his time at the New Windmill Ground. Previous clubs include Tooting & Mitcham, Airbus FC and Stratford Town. Brakes fans will be hoping to see more of a player this year who has made himself available despite being semi-retired over the past two seasons.
big part to play with the Brakes. The 24 year old has gained extensive non-league experience since leaving Northampton with the likes of Rugby Town, Brackley Town, Daventry Town, Kettering Town and most recently Bedford Town. Lee Moore (Midfielder/Striker) Lee signed for Brakes a week before the start of the 2012/13 season after being released by Nuneaton Town. He enjoyed a successful 3 year spell with our North Warwickshire neighbours, making 148 appearances and scoring 29 goals, and winning promotion from the Southern League Premier Division and the Conference North in the Play Offs. Prior to joining his home town club in July 2009, Lee started his career at Bedworth United, before a spell at Tamworth. He cost AFC Telford United £5,000, a then record fee for the Bucks, in 2006. During his time there Lee scored 35 goals, and the club won promotion from the Northern Premier League and enjoyed a run to the 1st Round of the FA Cup. He has a wealth of experience, including many play-off matches with both Nuneaton and Telford. He is equally at home on either wing, or through the middle, and is a natural creator and finisher. Will Green (Striker) A promising young attacking player, Will Green re-joined Leamington on an extended loan having had appearances for the Brakes in previous seasons before joining Brackley Town. He began his career as a youngster at Northampton Town, but after catching the eye while at Banbury United he was snapped up by Brackley. After a brief spell with Leamington Will spent the rest of the season at Bedford Town, before signing Oxford City in the summer of 2012. He started 2013-14 will the Brakes but moved once again to Brackley where he scored against the Brakes last season. Striker Will Green’s loan deal from Vanarama North League side Brackley Town came to an end in November, and the 22 year old has opted to end his contract at the Northamptonshire club to join Brakes on a permanent basis. Ben Mackey (Striker) Ben had a very successful first spell for the club in the Midland Alliance and Southern League Midland Division scoring 57 goals over two seasons before moving on to Brackley Town and Corby Town in the Conference North. In Season 2013-14 he spearheaded the Hemel Hempstead attack, scoring 43 goals in a campaign that saw them lift the Southern League Premier Division title. Manager Paul Holleran stated, ‘Ben had a disrupted season last year due to a combination of work commitments and injuries. He is a local lad and affectionately remembered by the fans and has expressed a real desire to do well for Leamington. A fully fit and motivated Ben Mackey has the ability to play a significant role for us this season. I really sense that he has got the bit between his teeth and wants to make an impact for us.’ Rob Ogleby (Striker) The Coventry born 23 year old has been capped 12 times at Under 21 level for Wales, and began his career in the Sky Blues’ Academy alongside new Brakes team mate Connor Gudger before moving north of the border to Heart of Midlothian upon his release in 2010. While with the Edinburgh club Rob spent time on loan at East Fife before returning south in 2012 and signing for Wrexham. He went on to make over 50 appearances and scored 12 goals for the Dragons in a little over 2 seasons, and was a member of the clubs’ FA Trophy winning side in 2013. After leaving Wrexham last summer Rob moved back up to Scotland to play for Livingston before returning home early this year and spending the latter half of last season with our North Warwickshire neighbours Nuneaton Town. Matt Warner and Ellison Porter were both around the first team towards the end of last season. Matt is a powerfully built defender who has been a standout performer in the Brakes Under 21 side and also spent some time at Racing Club Warwick. Ellison is a young striker who was playing for Heather St Johns prior to linking up with Leamington. They have been joined by Reece Mitchell during pre-season, who is another product of the club’s Under 21 set up.
Ross Oulton (Midfielder) Ross trained with the Brakes in the past after he was released by Northampton Town. He has 200 games under his belt, and is a local lad who has moved back to the area. He is very versatile and could have a
