CAPTAIN’S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain
E
vening all, so after Saturday’s great win against Leamington we have to back it up tonight otherwise it means nothing. We face Hungerford who are doing well this season and it’ll be a very tough game for us, but with the lads full of confidence and playing well I back us all the way. Saturday was a top drawer performance and we played some great football at times. We were too much for Leamington, even before the sending off, 1-0 flattered them, but with a win and a clean sheet we had a very happy changing room after the game. Apparently the table is looking quite pretty, but were refusing to look at it this year. We’ll just take it game by game, we know we have to get a result in every one. Saturday evening we had our team xmas do, something I think is very important for a bit of team bonding, all the lads had a great time and 3
spirits are high right now, but they need to stay that way, Starting tonight! It’s so important we back up Saturday’s result, we know it’s going to be a battle but the lads are ready for it, we know what Hungerford bring. Get behind the lads and sing us on to another 3 points. Up the Dolphins

BOARDROOM NOTES Chris Reeves Vice Chairman
W
hat an afternoon we had on Saturday! Yet again our lads produced the silky smooth passing high tempo game that we have come to love from them and yet again our opponents despite their lofty position in the league table, had no answer for it. Their goalkeeper was superb and undoubtedly prevented a much heavier defeat whilst the strange penalty issues we witnessed also played their part in keeping the score down. Three absolute nailed on penalties denied us-quite bewilderingly only for one of the harshest penalty award I have seen in many a year to be given our way only then for the most reliable penalty taker anyone could wish to have in the shape of Steve Devlin to step up and miss it!! The lack of discipline which saw Leamington reduced to nine men by the end of the game was sad to see and certainly they will need to address that aspect of their game if they are to make the swift return to the National League that they hope for. Suffice to say that the Non League Paper was left open on the Reeves breakfast table Sunday for quite some time with the league table prominently displayed! Now to tonight’s game. Hungerford and Poole games are always do tightly contested - the Clubs get on really well off the field- always good banter in the Boardroom, whilst on it you will usually struggle to get a cigarette paper between the sides. Cast your mind back to the last few encounters and reflect on that play off game here a couple of years ago and you will see what I mean! Our first ever involvement with Hungerford
came when we were both two of the English representatives in the Anglo Italian tournament of 1981.We didn’t play each other as the games were exclusively against the Italian sides. We of course got to the final and played live on national Italian tv going down gallantly 4-1 to full time professional Modena before a ten thousand crowd on their own patch- happy days! Suffice to say the players officials and supporters of Hungerford are most welcome to our Tatnam home. As these notes are being read I will be nervously trying to get a wifi connection ready to log on to the MLT as a long anticipated and look forward to holiday has come around-I hate missing games! I will be back for the Hitchin game on 22nd so give the lads a cheer for me while I am away. Finally I can’t let these notes pass without mentioning Eddie Mitchell. I am delighted Eddie has agreed subject to FA formalities to join the Board. We have as everyone will be aware had an association with him for a couple of years now and during that time he has done many good things for the club and shown himself to be not only a good friend to us but a real supporter.J oining the Board is a logical progression of that association. We have some exciting times ahead and his enthusiasm drive and initiative will be put to good use! Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50 tickets! Chris

oole consolidated their lead at the top in a game that they dominated but failed to have the goals to show for it. Leamington finished the game with only 9 players but Poole had to settle for Marvin Brooks diving header to settle the game, with Leamington having their keeper, Tony Breedon, to thank for a string of excellent saves including Devlin’s penalty. Loanee Lee Wort, who had an excellent debut for Poole, broke through on 10 minutes showing his strength but when trying to round Breedon was thwarted by the keeper. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when Burbidge’s

lovely cross was met by a a diving header by Brooks which went in to the corner of the net. The game was then dramatically stopped – a smashed floodlight been the cause (to misquote a famous phrase: “the stewards are on the pitch, there’s glass all over”). When play continued Poole continued their domination but failed to make few real chances. Leamington were reduced to 10 men on 37 minutes following 2 poor tackles by Edwards. The first was a very late nasty challenge on Roberts which may have merited a straight red. Edwards failed to make the most of his reprieve when he

LAST TIME OUT kicked out at Devlin and was rightly dismissed. From some neat build up play Wort had a strong shot go just over. Another Wort shot brought a good save from Breedon. Leamington threatened little, their best chance just on the half time when from a corner a shot looped up but Hutchings caught. Poole dominated the second half but it was a rather dull affair with Poole failing to really press home their 1 man advantage. Lewis Tallack almost found himself through on goal but the ever alert Breedon got their first. On 75 minutes Roberts shot was adjudged to have been deliberately handled by Hook. A penalty was awarded and Hook sent off. This appeared harsh from the half way line but the referee had no hesitation. Devlin stepped up but his firm shot was well saved by Breedon who guessed correctly. Now with a 2 man advantage Poole just kept possession. Burbidge played himself nicely through just before the end but then took too long to get his shot away and the ball was
cleared. Poole will be pleased with the 3 points which they deserved, but disappointed not to have won by more in the circumstances. Dickson did well coming in to defence at short notice with Lindsay out. Wort looks a strong addition to the team.
The Fan’s View Jack Tanner A controlling win over a title rival - important in the grand scheme of things! However, it’s important not to get carried away, as Hungerford are a very strong, physical side, it’ll be a tough game. A win over one of the chasing pack would be vital! Come on you Dolphins!

oday we welcome Hungerford Town to Tatnam. Our games against them are always close run affairs and I don’t think this one will be any different. They are a well resourced club who have a strong squad of players and we will need to be on top of our game to emerge as victors. Kettering was a disappointing result after we had put a good sequence of wins. However the conditions were atrocious and it was so hard to play any type of football. After missing two or three good chances we conceded an unfortunate own goal and that was the difference come full time. We fielded a youthful side against Sherborne in midweek in the DSC. This was always going to be my policy this season in every round. It’s a competition I value and care about but clearly trying to achieve promotion is our overwhelming priority. At the end of the season we have to be able to say that we gave ourselves the best chance of achieving that and if we fail there cannot be any excuses. Also with all the talented young players we have at the club we have to give them encouragement and belief that there is a clear pathway to first team football. I thought the young players were very good and it was only poor finishing that prevented us progressing. On Saturday we returned to winning ways in the league against Leamington.. I thought we dominated the game from start to finish and them finishing with nine men should not detract from how well the players did. Thanks to the supporters club generosity we were able to bring Lee Wort in on loan from Gosport and I thought he was exceptional. He will be
a big player for us over the next month I am sure of that. Richard Gillespie should be back in the squad on Saturday and I’m hoping that Jamie Gleason could also feature. It’s been such a frustrating time to be missing both players for so long but hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel. James Wood has left the club and I wish him well in his future career . He has been a great assistant manager over the last 4 years and I am sorry to see him go. However with Callum’s arrival he thought his role was somewhat restricted and I understand his thought process. Enjoy the game and let’s hope for a positive result

OBITUARY
E
veryone at Poole Town would like to pay tribute to George (Larry) Best, Luke Burbidge’s granddad, after he sadly passed away He was seen at every game supporting Luke and the Dolphins. His last game was the 1-1 draw over Dunstable, in which Luke scored a last-minute equaliser. Luke described his granddad as a “funny, witty guy who always had a comment about anything.” “He was a caring guy who loved supporting the lads and loved Michael Walker.” Luke’s fondest memory of his granddad was the fact he was always there to support the winger. Everyone’s thoughts are with Luke and his family at this sad time.

COMMERCIAL MATTERS We won 1-0 on Saturday against one of the early season favorites Leamington. That leaves us 8 points clear of Chippenham and 9 points clear of Hungerford who we play tonight and both having played the same number of games. Come on you Dolphins, let’s get the win and put even more point between us and the chasing pack! I would like to thank Portman Stone for Sponsoring the Match on Saturday and Chilfrome Delicatessen who sponsored the Ball. Between them, they chose Carl Pettefer as their Man of the Match. If you are not familiar with Chilfrome, then seek out Martin Smith on the right in the photo and on the stall at all home games selling his popoular Pork Pies and even more popular Tatnam Trebble. If you have never tried Tatnam Trebble, I promise you it will be the most tasty Cheddar you have ever had. See their advert elsewhere in this programme. Orders being taken for Christmas. I would also like to thank Gabby (Tom Killick’s granddaughter) for being our Mascot on Saturday. She had a great time meeting all the players and getting their autographs in the changing room before the match. For tonight’s game, Rockley Park are Match Sponsor and the Ball has been sponsored by Mike Christopher again, who will be picking the Man of the Match. Let’s hope you all have a great evening and hopefully the right result. We are now sold out for Match Sponsors for the remainder of this season. We have a limited number of MatchBall packages left this season, including the next two home games angainst
Slough and Hitchin. Please check the website for availability. If you or your company would like to sponsor Ball (£60), Player (£85), or know someone who would like to be a Mascot (£40) please get in contact. At the time of writing, Paul Ayley (Kitman) and Matt Fisher (Physio) are still looking for a Sponsor. The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to shape the future of the club. Interested parties are to contact any member of the board. The Skittles night after the St Neots game was the usual great fun and raised important funds for the Supporters Club, funds which were then used to contribute towards the loan spell of Lee Wort. Many thanks to all those who help to organise and run such event and for agreeing to support the club with the loan. We are also planning another Legends Night (Hall of Fame). This is likely to take place on 19th February. Speak to Dick behind the bar for further details. Mark Bumford, Commercial Director, 07787 600392, mark.bumford@pooletownfc.co.uk
