CAPTAIN’S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain

A

fternoon all, finally, a home league game! What a treat! Just what we need as its seemed on the road of late we have have been battling against a lot more than just the opposition. No big decisions have gone our way, vital decisions, the sort of ones that decide games, the luck has just not been with us. We can moan about the referees all we want but you get times like this throughout the season where nothing is going for you but you just have to stick together and ride it out, it’ll even itself out over the course of the season, anyway, they say you make you’re own luck! Saying all this away at Dunstable last week that’s exactly what we did, the world was against us first half, literally the world, one of those halves where you don’t get one decision, 1 of which saw us go 1 down, most teams would have crumbled and the game would have been done, well we didn’t! The boys showed incredible character, we stuck together as a team and knew we had what it takes to turn the game. The second half we created chance after chance but it still didn’t seem to want to go in, luckily we didn’t give in and in the dying minutes Burbs produced the goods, 1-1, a point was the minimum we deserved. An away point is never bad and could be vital come the end of the season.

3

Tuesday night we went out of the red insure cup away at Weymouth, we fielded mostly youth team players and once again they were terrific, they faced some experienced players and did themselves proud. They didn’t once get out classed. We lost the game 2-1 but to two fantastic strikes. Yes it’s a shame were out but it gives us more time to work on/prepare for a all important league fixtures. So today we want to get back to winning ways, we’re all confident we’ll turn things and we’re not worried about it at all, let’s hope we can get the three points today and move onwards and upwards. Get behind the lads! Up the Dolphins! Whisk

BOARDROOM NOTES Chris Reeves Vice Chairman

This afternoon our players will have a very strange experience – a home game! We have not played any home Southern League fixture since Saturday 17th October when we had that sparkling performance here beating Cirencester 3-0. Since then, the players have shown huge commitment to the cause by a succession of lengthy away trips with game after game involving 7 – 8 hours or more on a coach – having to leave their house before most other people have thought about getting up on a Saturday morning and returning home with no other time than to watch Match Of The Day and go to bed! To be able to have a leisurely morning and turn up at Tatnam for a home fixture will be a great treat therefore. Our opponents this afternoon will themselves have arrived here after a very long coach trip. We extend a warm Tatnam welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Cambridge City. Cambridge currently lie in 12th place in the League with 24 points from their 15 games. 7 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats. Those wins however include a quite superb performance in their last away trip at Leamington, winning by 2 goals to 1. They did us a huge favour on that day in terms of our battle with Leamington at the top of the table. Cambridge always produce good sides and our lads will need to be at their very best this afternoon. Although the results over the course of the last few weeks don’t look that great on paper, there has nevertheless been much to admire during the course of many of those performances and as has been widely publicised the team has been at the wrong end of a whole clutch of very crucial decisions which could quite easily have gone the other way which, had that happened, may well have meant the results of several of those games being quite different to the eventual outcome. There is huge quality in our squad and I have every confidence that those disappointments will be forgotten this afternoon and we will resume our challenge for top spot and the holy grail of promotion to the National League South. Last Tuesday night (and indeed the Tuesday night before that), saw two spectacular performances from the younger element of the players registered to the Club. On Tuesday, against a strong Weymouth side, a very young Poole Town team produced some sparkling football and were extremely unfortunate to be the wrong end of a 2-1 score line. There were many occasions when the quality of the lads play opened up the Weymouth defence, and as I say, the score could easily have

been something of an embarrassment for the more experienced hosts. The quality of Emil Salama’s goal was just superb. At the time of putting these notes together I am not sure whether Weymouth were filming the game – they do film most of them – consequently, if you get a chance to see the goal on You-Tube, then please do take it. There was a delightful pass struck with the outside of his right foot from Jack Dickson which fell into Emil’s path and the way that he strode forward and finished clinically promised great things for the future from this talented player. All the youngsters on show enhanced their reputation. Tom Rees in goal pulling off several excellent saves, Jon May and Todd Coombes were strong and resolute in defence. Ollie Davis, Emil Salama and George Richardson dynamos in the middle of the park and Toby Holmes was quite outstanding wide on the left and could easily have had a couple of goals himself. He was substituted at half time because he was not feeling well and to have produced 45 minutes of that quality when not feeling 100% was just awesome. Substitutes Morgan Browning and Ryan Kelly also demonstrated what good players they are and all in all it was a brilliant evening. I can’t remember when I have enjoyed a 2-1 defeat so much! This coming Tuesday we travel to Chippenham for a League match. If you haven’t booked your place on the coach, then do see Bill Reid, whilst next Saturday we have another home fixture, this time against St. Neots Town. Kick-off 3pm as usual. Thanks to all who supported the annual Sportman’s Dinner, held on Thursday at the Cumberland Hotel. Once again, a brilliant night producing much needed income for the Club and on that subject, we do have a new recruit on the Commercial front, in the shape of Richy Oram, who many of you, I am sure, will quickly get to know. Welcome Richy. Enjoy the game and don’t forget to buy your 50/50 tickets. Chris Reeves

TOM TALKS Tom Killick

First Team Manager

T

oday we welcome Gary Roberts and his Cambridge city players staff and supporters to the Tatnam for what I am sure will be another hotly contested league match. They had a disappointing time last season by their own high standards but they seem to be in good form at the moment and come to us on the back of an impressive win at st Neots . It will be another stern test of our promotion credentials . It’s been a while since I’ve written any notes and seems an age since we have had a home league match . It seems like the last few weekends have involved us getting on a coach early on Saturday morning and getting back late Saturday night. It’s been an arduous schedule and it takes a lot out of the players . I would also like to mention the supporters who have made the same journeys at their own expense be it on the coach or by other means. I have said it before but it really is humbling to see that sort of commitment and I thank you all. Results lately have been disappointing on the whole and have involved us exiting both the FA cup and trophy. At Whitehawk in the FA Cup we were up against a very powerful team full of ex league players and certainly they were one of the best teams I have seen at Conference South level. It was no disgrace losing. After the Whitehawk game a midweek game away at a Chesham team riding high on the crest of a wave following their FA Cup success was always going to be a tough proposition. Having said that in the first half we were the better team. In the second half we were poor and deserved to lose. Merthyr was in my view a very disappointing performance. I thought Merthyr were poor and the game was there for the taking but we seemed lethargic and laboured. We looked like we would earn a draw only to concede near the end through a lack of concentration at a set play. We were gutted to lose as the Trophy is a great competition and I really thought we could have a good run. Against Dunstable last Saturday I actually thought we played well and deserved to win the game. A late stunning Luke Burbidge goal meant we did not leave with nothing. I was delighted with the young players that were involved in

9

the DSC match v Shaftesbury and the Red Insure game at Weymouth. They really are a joy to watch and show great promise. My particular favourite part of those games was watching a young 17 year old with the surname Richardson throwing himself into a midfield battle against a 30 something year old Mark Moseley with a few hundred league appearances under his belt. He and players like him are the club’s future and we are very lucky to have them Lastly I would like to mention Callum Brooks who has recently joined as first team coach. He has already made a big impression on me and the players. He works tirelessly with the u21’s and the first team. The other week he took under 21 training on a Monday, attended the first team match on the Tuesday, the U21 match on Wednesday then first team training on the Thursday! I’m sure he was popular with his wife that week! He will be a great asset to the club going forward On the injury front I am hoping that Jamie Gleeson will be back playing within the next couple of weeks which will be a big boost. Richard Gillespie is more of a worry and is due to see a chiropractor this week which we hope might help him get closer to a clear diagnosis and in turn accelerate his return. You the supporters haven’t seen half of his capabilities because of his injuries . It is so frustrating. I have said it before but I see him as the best striker in the league and when fit I wouldn’t swap him for any in the league above either. I desperately want him back playing and the club will do everything possible to make that happen. He is the model of professionalism and dedication as well as being a lovely genuine person. Fingers crossed he can get back to full fitness sooner rather than later Enjoy the game

MEET THE OPPOSITION GARY ROBERTS: Gary was appointed manager in January 2003. He previously took St.Albans from a relegation situation to promotion candidates and before that the same with Baldock Town. His playing career included over 200 games for Brentford and spells with Barnet, Maidstone and Welling in the Conference. In the early ‘90s he enjoyed a short time as a player at City.

He returned to Hitchin in 2012 before coming back to City and had a brief spell at Royston Town before returning to City. CHARLIE DAY (21): Charlie is a product of Histon’s Scholarship programme and made his 1st team debut at the age of 17 and has gone one to make over 50 appearances at leftback or midfield. He signed for City in summer 2014.

NEIL MIDGLEY (35): In summer 2013 Neil was appointed as first team coach. Neil is a product of Ipswich Town’s Academy but he made his name at Barnet where he scored freely. He moved on to Kettering Town via Canvey Island. Neil had a three-month loan spell with City in 2006 before returning to Kettering for three weeks when he made the move to City permanent. Neil has made over 200 appearances for City.

DURAN REYNOLDS (25): Duran can play either leftback or centre back or midfield and is a product of Histon’s Academy. He has previously played for Barrow, Dagenham & Redbridge and Boston United.

ZACHARY BARRETT (27) : Zac is a goalkeeper who joined Luton Town at the age of 11 and progressed through their colts teams into their Academy. He earned a 3 year contract and was a regular in the reserve team through season 2006/07 but injury curtailed his appearances. He was released from his contract on financial grounds and signed for City in September 2008 and has been ever present since then until last season when he missed most of the season through injury. TOM PEPPER (27): Tom is essentially a rightback but can also play on the left. He is now in his third spell at City having initially being signed from Hitchin Town.

17

LEE CHAFFEY (31): Lee is a centreback/ leftback signed by City after being released by Ipswich Town after five years in the Portman Road Academy. Lee, now in his twelfth season at City, played initially at leftback before forming a formidable central partnership initially with Glen Fuff and latterly Dave Theobald. Lee is also the teams emergency goalkeeper. DAN GLEESON (30): Dan was signed by Cambridge United Academy from Cambridge City Academy as an under 14 . He went on to earn a contract at United and played for their first team over 100 times. He then had spells with Mansfield Town and Luton Town before signing for Lowestoft Town in 2012. Dan has also earned seven England C caps. ADAM MURRAY (26): Adam is a centrehalf signed from Mildenhall Town early

MEET THE OPPOSITION last season. He was widely regarded as the best centrehalf in The Thurlow Nunn League at the time .and soon justified that status with strong performances for City. BUSTER HARRADINE (30): Buster joined City in the summer of 2014 after two successful seasons with Soham Town Rangers where he scored freely. Buster plays on either wing or centre midfield and prior to his spell at Soham, he plied his trade with several county league clubs. Buster was voted supporters player of the year last season. ALEX SERRANO (26): Spanish born Alejandro was previously with AD Colmenar Viejo in the Spanish league. Alex plays in centre or right midfield and showed great promise in his summer trial at City. DANNY KELLY (25): Danny signed for City in August 2011 having previously played for Eastbourne Boro, Dover Athletic and Barnet. Danny scored freely in this spell including two hat tricks in consecutive matches. Unfortunately for City, Danny decided to give life a chance in Australia. On his return to England in March 2014, he had no hesitation in rejoining City and helped the team to a playoff place the following season. IEUAN LEWIS (27): Ieuan was signed from Hitchin Town in October 2012 after making 200 appearances for the Hertfordshire club. He is equally at home on right or left of midfield and has played many times at rightback for City. Ieuan played for Arlesey Town and Stevenage

JOEL NORRIS (25): Joel has been a prolific scorer in lower leagues, scoring 76 goals in 84 matches for Welwyn Garden City before signing for Bedford town and continueing his form in the early stages of this season.

C0MMERCIAL MATTERS Our last home league game was almost a month ago, with only the Dorset Senior Cup tie at home since, a game which we won 3-0 against Shaftsbury setting up a home tie against Sherborne in the next round on 1st Dec. Since the DSC game we drew 1-1 away at Dunstable with a 92 minute equaliser from Burbs and then our youthful side fell 2-1 at Weymouth in the RIC on Tuesday. Today we take on 12th placed Cambridge and we have a chance to go top again today with at least a draw. Come on you Dolphins, let’s get the win and put some points between us and the chasing pack! I would like to thank new Sponsor On the Roxx for Sponsoring the Shaftsbury Match and inviting us last Sunday for a Carvery and few celebratory drinks in their High Street venue (Was Yates). I would also like to thank Stephen Allen and Carol Garland who sponsored the Ball and as season ticket holders, have secured reserved seats in the stand for the rest of the season. On the Roxx chose Tom Rees last Tuesday as their Man of the Match after some fine saves and for keeping a clean sheet. For today’s game, we welcome another new sponsor The Funky Peach as Match Sponsor (you will see and hear more of them in the coming weeks) and the Ball has been sponsored by our friends from CityIR. Let’s hope you all have a great afternoon and hopefully the right result to see Poole Town go top of the league. We are looking for a Ball Sponsor against St. Neots on Sat 21st November plus Match & Ball Sponsors and a Mascot for the Sherborne game on Tuesday 1st December. We have a limited number of Match and Ball packages left this season. Please check the website for availability. If you or your company would like to sponsor a Match (£180), Ball (£60), Player (£85), or know someone who would like to be a Mascot (£40) please get in contact. At the time of writing, Paul Ayley (Kitman) and Matt Fisher (Physio) are

still looking for a Sponsor. The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to shape the future of the club. Interested parties are to contact any member of the board. The annual Sportsmans Dinner was held on Thursday with Michael Otton providing the entertainment. This programme went to print before that night, so we will update you next home game. We have a skittles night after the next home game v St Neots. Contact Rob in the Clubshop for more details. We are also planning another Legends Night (Hall of Fame). This is likely to take place on 19th February. Speak to Dick behind the bar for further details.
