CAPTAIN’S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain

A

fternoon all, so since I last wrote my notes we’ve picked up 4 more points and kept 2 clean sheets, strengthening our league position. In one of our worst performances of the season we were held 0-0 at home to Hungerford, a result that seems to be a regular occurrence against them, but this was a game we were just not at the races. We were ok defensively and managed to keep another clean sheet and earn ourselves a point but that has to be the only real positive. Our attacking players have been excellent recently and all it was was an off day for them, they were straight back to their best Saturday away at Bedworth, we were just too much for them going forward. They still had their threats and we did well to keep yet another clean sheet. It was another great 3 points on the road for us and we just have to keep on picking up points, were not too interested

3

in the league table at the moment, what’s important is our next game and that’s today vs Slough. We’ve had a good week’s training leading up to this and were fresh and ready to go, we know today will be tough, but we remain confident in doing what we do. Get behind the lads!! Whisk

BOARDROOM NOTES Clive Robbins Chairman

T

his afternoon I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Directors, Players and Supporters of Slough Town F.C. It is only recently that we have been matched in the same league as Slough but our few encounters have always been good natured, full blooded affairs and I am sure this will be no different. Our visitors have had a mixed season so far with some notable victories and some disappointing defeats and they sit mid table at the time of writing these notes, with a difficult home fixture against Merthyr Town on Tuesday. Poole Town ,on the other hand, have carried on from last year with some outstanding performances in the League and we deserve to be at the top of the pile this weekend. I know Tom is determined to succeed this year and with all Cup commitments out of the way we are set fair to concentrate on winning this very competitive division. I, personally, believe we have the inner strength it takes to stay the course this time around and the fixture backlog which cost us so dear last time appears to have been completely turned around with points in the bag rather than games in hand. The performance at Bedworth has strengthened our position at the summit with all reports pointing to a clinical performance against resurgent opponents who had improved their performances in recent weeks. Toms comments on Lee Wort in the Echo were particularly effusive and, with Richard Gillespie’s continued absence, it is comforting that we will have Lee for at least a few more games. I would also like to congratulate Luke Roberts on some outstanding performances up front and Marvin Brooks looks to be peaking at just the right time! Our defence has proved to be one of the best and meanest in the Southern Premier and the midfield continues to dominate most matches with the talents of Carl Pettefer and Steve Devlin providing chance after chance for the tireless running of Luke Burbidge. All in all the omens look good but it is only by keeping up a

relentless pressure in every match that we will reach the near pinnacle of Non league which is the Conference South. Whilst writing I wish a speedy recovery to those players who have suffered long term injuries playing for PTFC and the time is approaching when they will be demanding a place back in our side, giving Tom a real headache when preparing his Team Sheets. As Chris Reeves mentioned in his last notes, before jetting off to warmer climes, the Board would like to welcome Eddie Mitchell as our latest Director and we are fortunate to have his expertise and new ideas to invigorate the Club in our relentless climb up the pyramid. With all the hype surrounding the success of AFC Bournemouth of late it is too easy to forget the one man who put all the pieces in place ready for ultimate success and, albeit on a lower level, we hope his stay with us will duplicate the process. Don’t forget the Weymouth game on the 2nd January here at Tatnam. They will bring hundreds of fans and I would like to think that we can sing just as loudly and support the boys. League positions mean nothing in a local derby such as this and we will give everything to win ‘El Jurassico’ as it has become known!

Buy your usual 50/50 ticket and maybe one more this week!! Clive Robbins. Chairman. .

COMP League DATE 12/12/2015 WRITTEN BY Jack Tanner for South Coast Journalism

P

oole put even more breathing space between themselves and their fellow title rivals as they saw off a side from the other end of the table – 23rd place Bedworth United. With three other title rivals out of the picture (Leamington has their Trophy trip to Altrincham cancelled, whilst Chippenham didn’t play and Hungerford were also on Trophy duty), Redditch and Hitchin drew 0-0. However, it wouldn’t exactly be plain sailing for the Dolphins, as the first half saw an extremely open half, which Poole just about edged out, early on. It was topsy-turvy, but neither side had the penetrative power to take the lead, at least until the 38th minute. As Jack Dickson floated in a corner, Denham Hinds in the Bedworth goal came to claim – but dropped the ball, before blocking his own defender’s clearance, the ball falling back to Poole, and eventually to Lee Wort,

7

whose acrobatic overhead kick saw the ball turned in by the outstretched Marvin Brooks, who grabbed his second goal in three games. It wouldn’t be the ‘keeper’s sole mistake of the game, as moment later he spilled again, allowing Luke Burbidge to get a shot off on goal – only for it to be well blocked by Craig Kelly on the line. There would be even more last-ditch heroics, as Luke Rowe was forced into making another goal-line clearance from the resultant corner. After a large spike of activity, the game died down again, and by the time the half time whistle went, the two sides were equal again. By now the wind had picked up – just in time for Poole to kick against it. Bedworth seemed to sense they could perhaps grab an equaliser, but apart from the a few shots over the bar, the hosts never really threatened, even if they had the lion share of the possession in the second half.

LAST TIME OUT Poole were resigned to hitting the home side on the counter, and it paid off. Luke Roberts picking up the ball, before driving into the Bedworth box – his cutback left by Dickson, allowing Wort to slot home for his first goal in Poole colours. With 9 minutes to go, the hosts couldn’t muster anything of any real note, meaning the Dolphins returned to Dolphins victorious, with their 4th clean-sheet in 5 games. Speaking with Killick after the game, the Poole manager stated: “I didn’t think we played particularly well, but we were resilient when we had to be.” “The second goal just came at a good time for us really, because at that point, it looked like they had momentum – we were defending for long periods. So, the second goal was precious.” With Poole now 12 points clear, Killick said that: “I did look at some of the fixtures today and thought that if we looked after things here then there might be some dropped points elsewhere – that’s how it’s proved. I’m just pleased to have a free week this week – we’ve had a lot of games, it’s nice to have a free week where we can do a bit of training and get ourselves ready for Saturday.” With 25 games played this year, Poole have amassed 53 points – last year they had 44 points from 18. This is a stat Killick is aware of: “[Last season] it was before the end of January that we’d play the amount of games we’d played this year – you can almost say we’re over a month ahead of our fixtures, and that is a

really positive thing from our point of view, to have a little bit more breathing space between games, time to recover from games, has to stand us in good stead.” Poole were renowned for their defensive steel last term, and look to be back at their usual standard – they have conceded just the one goal in their past 5 league games. “We pride ourselves on working very hard when the opposition have the ball, we try and restrict teams in terms of space, possession, opportunities and I think we have been good lately – people should bear in mind, although a couple are longer term, we’ve gone into this game without Richard Gillespie, Jamie Gleeson, Steve Devlin and Lewis Lindsay. That’s four very strong players to be without.”

The Fan’s View Jack Tanner A controlling win over a title rival - important in the grand scheme of things! However, it’s important not to get carried away, as Hungerford are a very strong, physical side, it’ll be a tough game. A win over one of the chasing pack would be vital! Come on you Dolphins!

MEET THE OPPOSITION Luke Williams – Goalkeeper - 19 year old goalkeeper Luke Williams joined the Rebels in January 2015 from Hereford United. Luke came through the ranks at Aldershot Town before joining Hereford United in the summer of 2014, where he gained rave reviews for a number of outstanding performances. Mark Scott – Goalkeeper - ‘Scottie’ signed for the club in the summer of 2015 from Conference North club Oxford City. At 24, he has a great deal of experience having spent four years with Swindon Town, and within that time he went out on loan with Salisbury City in the Conference South, the highlight of which was winning the man of the match in their FA Cup Third round game at Sheffield United. Sean Fraser – Defender - Sean is a 20 year-old midfielder or full-back who signed for the club in August 2012 and is a former Reading, Coventry City and Falkirk youth academy player. In his first season he made a string of impressive performances, which helped Slough to the First Round of the FA Cup. Previous clubs include Marlow and Southern Premier, Banbury united. Guy Hollis – Defender - Guy is a strong, quick defender. Equally comfortable at right back or centre back, Guy spent several seasons at Ashford Town (Middx.) and then moved up to the Ryman Premier with Carshalton Athletic. Guy’s partnership with Adam at the back has seen numerous clean sheets and with powerful surges from defence Guy is a strong and exciting player to watch. Billy Jeffreys – Defender - Centre-back Billy Jeffreys joined the club from Hampton & Richmond Borough, where he was club captain, in October 2014.Billy was previously at Ashford Town (Middx), and was at Millwall as a young professional. Craig Scott – Defender - Craig is another of the summer 2015 signings, joining the Rebels from local rivals Marlow.. He comes highly rated from Marlow boss Mark Bartley, and was their skipper last year. He is a no-nonsense centre half, and

17

a leader on the pitch. He originally comes from Newcastle and has played for a number of sides in the Northern League, however his job brought him to the south. Daniel Hicks – Defender - 24-year-old central defender Dan Hicks rejoined Slough in September 2015 from Marlow, where he was club captain. He came through the youth team at Slough in the 2008/2009 season and made one substitute appearance under Derek Sweetman, before leaving to join Burnham. He then had spells at Chalfont St Peter and Windsor, where he was also made club captain. Leigh Rumbold – Midfielder- Rummy joined the Rebels in December 2013 from Fleet Town. He made a huge impact at the club with his no nonsense displays. Leigh did not start the 2014/15 season with the Rebels, but came back in to the squad in November 2014 upon his return from the US, where he played for Lansing United. Whilst at Lansing, he won the National Premier League (Mid West Conference). He departed the club again in January 2015 and his footballing adventures continued after signing for Team Taranaki of New Zealand’s Central League before returning in October 2015.. Jake Parsons – Midfield - Jake re-joined the club in November 2013 with a view to getting himself fit after having a knee operation last summer. He immediately integrated into the squad and proved his ability. He can operate on either wing, and also down the middle. His previous clubs include Windsor and Eton and Windsor FC. Jake is a fans favourite, picking up several awards in the 14/15 season. Warren Harris – Midfield - Warren is a right winger who was signed as a loan player for Godalming by Neil Baker and Jon Underwood from Conference South, Staines Town. Warren is the younger brother of fellow Rebel Scott, and is a great talent. He is hard-working, quick and has a real eye for goal, having scored 23 in season 2012/13, including 21 league goals. Warren has also represented Ashford Town (Middx).

MEET THE OPPOSITION Gurkan Gokmen – Midfielder - Gürkan Gökmen joined Slough Town on loan from Conference South Wealdstone in February 2015.Gürkan is a 20-year-old Dutch midfielder who was a professional at Watford, and has recently been playing professionally in Turkey for Ankara based club Sekerspor A.S. He was highly recommended by Gordon Bartlett at Wealdstone. Adrian Sear – Midfielder - Former Burnham, St Neots Town and Histon midfielder Adrian Sear joined Slough Town in September 2014.Sear joined Burnham briefly on loan from St Neots at the back end of season 2013/14, and decided to join Slough following his release in the summer. Sear has also represented Beaconsfield SYCOB and Ruislip Manor. Nathan Webb – Midfielder - Joined the club in July 2015. He is one that Neil Baker and Jon Underwood have been interested in for a while, having played against Slough numerous times for Beaconsfield and Burnham. He started out at Hayes and Yeading in their youth team, and made the step up to the first team as a 17 year old playing in the Conference National. He then had spells at Farnborough and Wealdstone, before moving to Beaconsfield initially on loan. His best position is central midfield where he has bundles of energy and quality, and he will give the joint managers great options in there. Edward Smith – Striker - Striker Ed Smith joined the club in August 2012 on a dual-registration basis from Metropolitan Police. Ed wasted little time in making an impact, striking up an excellent goal scoring partnership with Danny Burnell as the Rebels made it through to the First Round of the FA Cup. He scored 33 goals in all competitions in his first season with the club, and won the club’s Golden Boot award. His previous clubs include Chertsey Town and Fleet Town. Edward has had a fantastic start to the season and is currently high up the league’s leading goal scorers table. Scott Harris – Striker - Scott Harris known as ’Hatchet’ has previously played for Ashford Town (Middx) in the Premier division, where

he spent a number of seasons. He is a strong hard-working centre forward with an excellent goal scoring record at this level. He is an incredibly strong forward, who works himself into the ground for the team; always on the move he certainly keeps the opposition defenders on their toes! Dan Read – Striker - Dan Read joined from Egham Town in March 2015 having previously played under the management of Jon Underwood and Neil Baker whilst at Godalming Town, and the striker was top scorer for the ‘Gs’ in his first season, notching 23 goals in the 2011/12 season after joining from Fleet Town in 2011 Lewis Putman – Striker – Putts was the first summer signing in 2015. He is a player that the joint managers have been tracking for two years. He is a prolific striker who made his name at Oxhey Jets at Step 5 level, where in one season he scored 84 goals. An unfortunate ACL injury sustained shortly after joining Wealdstone, meant that he missed that entire season. The 14/15 season was spent at Step 4 clubs on his fitness comeback, and the joint managers feel that they are signing him at an ideal time, and are delighted to have him on board where he can fight it out with the other strikers at the club. Charlie Mpi – Striker -Accountant Charlie Mpi joined the Rebels in the summer of 2011 after impressing in the club’s pre-season campaign. The former Wealdstone and Maidenhead United striker scored three times and impressed Steve Bateman with his direct running and work ethic. Mpi won the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Championship whilst at Loughborough University, scoring the opening goal of a 1-1 draw in normal time against UWE Hartpury, before firing home the winning penalty kick in a tense shoot-out, which eventually finished 12-11. He has also played in the England Universities team.Charlie also spent time on loan at Aylesbury, with spells dual registered with Burnham and Thatcham Town before returning to the Rebels early in the 2015/16 season
