HISTORY

My first job in this industry, after a Dealer Management course with Vauxhall, was selling Volvo in Pennsylvania, two years. Then in Mayfair, London for 11 years selling Lancia, Alfa and Lamborghini, a quick year with an Israeli Car shark that sold very expensive cars to Arabs prior to obtaining my Aussie Visa. Arrived here and worked with Ron Hodgson Ferrari / Jaguar for 6 months before meeting John Thompson and joining Chatswood Classic for 8 years. Suddenly it was 1992 and I was here with white tiles and red Ferraris mixed with new Porsches.

“My grandfather worked for Herbert Austin, of Austin Morris notoriety in Longbridge, England all his life. He was distributing parts for Japan to help them build cars! My father sold Vauxhalls in Lagos, Nigeria for Unilever, he drove a ‘57 Chevrolet! He then became MD of Lex Corp UK, so it was natural for me to go into the motor industry."

THE BEGINNING

The Sutton Group purchased SVM and kept on all their staff with Bob Atkin staying on as CEO. History shows the industry went through tough times in the eighties, culminating with a severe recession for Australia in 1987, which lasted until the early nineties.

Amazingly, in a time of recession, Suttons purchased a site in Willoughby where they built the current showroom and opened as a Porsche Ferrari centre under the now famous name of Scuderia Veloce Motors in November 1991. An enormous glass show-case to highlight the beauty of all the German and Italian thoroughbred vehicles sitting on the highly polished white floor. Only 4 minutes from the Harbour Bridge on a main arterial road, it would be a full 10 years until that all familiar glass showcase would alter. In those days one could gaze at a Ferrari F40, a 512 BB, or a 328GTB through our windows. We showcased our Porsche 944’s, 928’s and of course the 911. Remember, a new 911 was $200,000 on the road whilst an apartment or small house was a similar amount! Naturally, the number of cars we were delivering then was only a handful a month. Consequently, the carpark we designed, with 4 spaces in 1991 was ample for the odd Ferrari 328 or Porsche 911 as all cars were much smaller then. These days, we are so busy, I find myself out at the front directing traffic and attempting to help our clients drop off their cars.

Having migrated to Australia in 1984 I was lucky enough to hear that SVM were looking for leadership for Willoughby. Laurie Sutton interviewed me and Bob Atkin confirmed my appointment as GM for Scuderia Veloce in May 1992. Here I sit, some 30 years later, with the same appreciation of Porsche as I had in the early years.

THENINETIES

My personal favourite quote from Dr Ferry Porsche: "Life itself is a race, marked by a start, and a finish. It is what we learn during that race, how we apply it, that determines whether our participation has had particular value. If we learn from each success, and each failure, and improve ourselves through this process, then at the end, we have fulfilled our potential and performed well."

In the early nineties my whole focus was on generating enough income to justify the overheads and show a positive result each month. Consequently, we branched out into used prestige vehicles, including BMW, Mercedes and such like, sourced from local people and the SMH on a Saturday morning. We lined these cars up along the front of our Dealership, painted the screens in coloured pricing with the year model and a large price etc. It was survival of the quick and the fittest! Apparently a friend of Laurie Sutton called him and said

"They have used cars strewn across the front of SVM with coloured pricing! This is just terrible!" To which Laurie answered "Well, they are selling cars, that is what counts”.

I remember very vividly the first car I sold, a brand new 944 S2 Cabriolet in Silver to Malcolm Carver an architect from Pymble. We owned 6 of them at that time. He arrived with a Mercedes 190E and displayed a desire to drive the 944, the next day he owned it! We lost money on the trade, however, we were very happy, one down and five to go. Plus we inherited Malcolm as a great ambassador for us, purchasing more cars through the years and even joining me on my annual Ice-Force sojourn to Finland.

PORSCHE 928 1978-1995

When designing the 928, the focus was on lightweight construction. The doors, front wings and bonnet were therefore made from aluminium instead of sheet steel. Behind the plastic bumpers integrated in the body shape there were also aluminium profiles that could withstand a collision at up to 8 km/h (5 mph) without any damage. The 928 had round, electrically operated pop-up headlights that were integrated in the wings. The rounded fastback was dominated by the large window of the rear lid. The 928 models were powered by a water-cooled V8 engine with a 90° cylinder arrangement. The displacement of the power unit was increased from an initial 4.5 litres to 5.4 litres. Power was transmitted according to the transaxle principle. To improve aerodynamics, the models were fitted with a front and rear spoiler from type 928 S (MY 1979) onwards. The rear axle of the 928 was a completely new development. What made this double-wishbone suspension – also known as the Weissach axle – unique was its toe-in stabilising effect. This worked more or less as a passive rear-wheel steering and thus made a significant contribution to the active safety of the Gran Turismo. 928 GT (Spring 1989-MY 1991)

993 911 THE 1994 - 1998

PORSCHE MODEL SPOTLIGHT

In 1994, the 964 model line was replaced by the 993. This new model was a significant advance, not just from a technical, but also a visual perspective.

The front wings of the 993 Carrera were wider and flatter. Because of the shorter luggage compartment lid, the black rubber lip forming the seam between the body and the front bumper on the G model and the 964 was omitted.

The rear wings were also widened and ran in a straighter line towards the rear with the higher-positioned tail lights. The 993 was initially available as a Coupé and Cabriolet with rear-wheel drive. For model year 1995, there followed the all-wheel Carrera 4 and 911 Turbo versions with viscous multi-plate clutch and in model years 1996/97, the Carrera 4S and the Carrera S.

The Targa model produced as of MY 1996 featured a large, electrically adjustable sliding roof made of tinted laminated glass instead of the removable soft top and existing rollover bar for the first time. The Carrera and Targa models were powered by a new 3.6-litre engine, which initially developed 272 PS and 285 PS as of MY 1996.

STOLEN!

A 993 in oak green was stolen from the street when a delivery truck driver unloaded it and and left the keys in the ignition. Somebody had been admiring the back end of this 993 and just thought "I need that". The truck driver came into reception to say; "I have a car for you" - we went out to collect it and found it had gone! Can you imagine? I was going to have a baby!

We lost that Porsche for seven days, until I got a call from the police at 2:00 am. "We've found your car, it's in a car park can you come down?"

I go down and it's there with no damage, with mileage indicating it was driven from Willoughby to Leichhardt without plates. Somebody had become so emotional about the car they just couldn't help themselves.

13 PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU

That was me in 1990 and the glass was the new Scuderia Veloce Motors showroom at Willoughby. Anyone with an abiding interest in architecture and building design could not have failed to be impressed and to see that showroom subsequently filled with some of the world’s best sports and supercars – well it was the old adage of the whole being ‘better than the sum of its parts’. That time of course, saw the changing of the guard in terms of Porsche engine cooling, from air to water, but Porsche had something of a ‘Goodbye, Farewell and Amen’ treat in store.

Perhaps with the 20/20 vision of hindsight, the 993 generation of the 911 has often been lauded as the best of

the 911 series with advocates citing its beauty and its great performance. It is somewhat of a well-worn phrase but, ‘even by today’s standards’, it was a standout and that last gasp of fresh air that Porsche blew into the body of genuine motoring. At the peak of the pyramid of models, sat the 911 993 Turbo S. Introduced in the penultimate year of production of the 993, the Turbo S saw a power upgrade to 450 PS, from a larger Triple K K-24 turbochargers, an additional oil cooler and a modified Motronic engine management system. Its kerb weight of 1,500 kg brought up 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, 100 mph in 8.9 seconds and, in certain situations, a top speed just beyond 180 mph.

Constructed with exceptional attention to detail by Porsche’s Exclusive Department, the Turbo S was priced 50% higher than the 993 Turbo when new and worldwide production totalled just 345 cars, 26 of which were produced in RHD with only 15 cars reaching Australian shores. It was truly an enormous step up in performance, looks, exclusivity and, inevitably, price over the standard 911 Turbo.

"As a tribute to PCW, although conditions saw me purchase the 993 Turbo S privately, there was always a free-flow of information and assistance from them, a relationship which I have appreciated greatly."

STEPHEN RICHARDSON

"My 911’s motor was in pieces in the Willoughby workshop. Surely this was the perfect time to trade in? There was a Guards Red / black leather 944 Cabriolet with only 10,000 kms in the showroom. I fell in love. Two interesting points - the boot in a 944 Cabriolet must be the shallowest boot of any car, and for some reason the heated rear view mirrors are permanently on when the car is running.

In 2002 I had my one and only big accident when a driver drove through a stop sign. The 944 was brilliant and I was not injured."

PORSCHE 968 1992-1995

The last development stage of fourcylinder transaxle models at Porsche was initiated with the 968 in model year 1992. Most of the body parts for the successor to the 944 S2 were adopted from the previous model. Nonetheless, the front end of the 968 in particular was much more modern – and partly anticipated the front design of the later 911 (type 993). A sixspeed manual transmission and a Tiptronic transmission were available for the 968 for the first time. This model also heralded the first use of VarioCam variable intake camshaft control.

BOXSTER THE 1996 - P resent

PORSCHE MODEL SPOTLIGHT

There are two reasons I remember 1996, firstly and most importantly, in March, I had a client coming in to buy a car...

Not unusual for a car dealership you might say, yet this was the moment I met my beautiful wife Sharon. We were married in the last month of last century, Dec 1999.

The other important, historic, Porsche fact was the release of our Boxster which we have recently celebrated its anniversary with the Boxster 25 Year Anniversary model. It was the car that opened a new segment and saved Porsche and is still selling like hot cakes today.

The International launch of the Boxster was held in Scottsdale, Arizona in September 1996. We were able to drive this all new concept of a sports car through the mountains and across the desert plains of Arizona, along with Police escorts! There were 70 to 80 brand new Boxsters there for us to sample, all sorts of colours and all so exciting. I watched the unveiling of three Boxsters on stage whilst sitting next to Jerry Seinfeld an avid Porsche collector and friend of Dr Wendelin Wiedeking the CEO of Porsche AG from 1993 to 2009. Later at the black tie event, Liza Minelli performed for us and on another night under the stars and in the desert, Jerry Seinfeld did a few of his observational comedy routines!

Out of the crisis with a brilliant idea

The early 1990s were a very difficult period for Porsche AG economically. Declining sales figures – partly due to the fall in value of the US dollar – and the excessively high production costs of the company’s four technically very independent product lines, the 911, 944, 968 and 928, meant that the sports car manufacturer was in serious trouble. It even became a takeover target for large car manufacturers. But the introduction of the completely newly developed Porsche Boxster in 1996 marked a turning point in the company’s fortunes. The agile, midengine roadster not only opened up a new market segment for Porsche, but also attracted a significantly younger customer group, thanks to price positioning below the established 911.

NAUGHTIES THE 2000 TO 2009

With SVM Willoughby now a stand-alone Porsche Dealer, the time had come to plan a renovation, this was completed in 2003. We wrapped the building in Alucobond, moved our Parts and Service Department offices and built a new modern reception with a Scuderia Café element. Everyone received a new Corporate Identity Desk and Workstation with new furnishings throughout. We felt like we had arrived! Very soon after we officially adopted the new name of Porsche Centre Willoughby. However, we managed to alter the car rear window decals by just the letters and adopting the German flag colours instead of the Italian ones that had been synonymous with SVM for so many years. Just last week a very good client arrived with a car bought from another Sydney dealer as we did not have one, he wanted our plate frames and rear decal attached forthwith!

996 911 THE 1998 - 2004

PORSCHE MODEL SPOTLIGHT

Fans were amazed when they first laid eyes on it at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1997. It was a car that broke with multiple conventions. With the exception of the heavily modified iconic 911 design and the rear-engined drive concept, everything was new. It used water cooling instead of air cooling and a ground-breaking parts-sharing concept with the 986-generation Boxster meant that up to the B-pillars, the interiors of the 996 and the Boxster were identical. What remained unchanged was the boxer principle of the six-cylinder engine. What was new was the willingness of the engineers and designers to turn much else on its head.

"The 996 is the lightest water-cooled 911 you can buy, the same-generation GT3 included. It’s also 80kg lighter than the air-cooled 993 predecessor. And you still get the rear +2 seats – in fact, there’s a surprising amount of room, as a 996 is 18.5cm longer than the previous 993."

SEAN ENTERS THE MATRIX

I leased Keanu Reeves a car when he was here in Sydney doing his Matrix movies, he asked about a car, and we leased a 911 to him for the months he was here during movie production in 1998. That was a Porsche 911 996. He would invite my wife and I down to set when they were filming, amazing!

One Saturday, six months after, our receptionist walks into my office and says "Sean, somebody on the phone says it's Keanu Reeves, I don't know what he wants or who it is..."

Turns out Keanu was calling from the plane, to ask how many tickets I wanted for the preview, and he's got the person on the switch saying "Yeah right, who's really speaking?"

To describe Sean, I would say he’s 110% selfless. For example last night I was in my shed washing the Turbo S and I notice the tyre was near flat, I’m thinking it’s a centre lock wheel, I'm not going to take it to Bob Jane, I texted him at 9pm at night and said: “Do you guys do puncture repairs?” He said: “Sure, what time do you want to come in?” That’s what he’s like, he will talk to you at 9pm because that’s what Sean does.

"Enough said, that's just how the man is wired. With Sean customers become friends and that's exactly what has happened with us"

In model year 2001, the turbo-free time at Porsche came to an end with the 911 Turbo Coupé. In model year 2004, a 911 Turbo Cabriolet was series-produced for the first time since 1989. Its 3.6-litre bi-turbo engine delivered 420 horsepower, the Turbo featured all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The model range was extended in model year 2005 with the 911 Turbo S.

“It was apparent that the sports car had its limits on the market,” recalls Anton Hunger, head of communications for former Chairman of the Executive Board Wendelin Wiedeking. “The sales division had clearly demonstrated this using market research. In the long run, Porsche would have ended up on a downward slope again.”

24 PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU
An analysis commissioned by the department overseen by Hans Riedel, the board member responsible for sales at the time, had shown that the legendary 911 and the new mid-engined Boxster model alone would not guide the manufacturer into a secure future.

CAYENNE THE 2003 - 2006

PORSCHE MODEL SPOTLIGHT

In September 2002, a good four years after the decision to build the Cayenne was made public, the first Porsche five-seater celebrated its world première at the Paris Motor Show. “Porsche is indeed facing what might be its greatest challenge,” said Wendelin Wiedeking at the pre-show event in the courtyard of the Hotel d’Evreux. “This day, there is no doubt in my mind, will be of historic significance for the company.” The Chairman of the Executive Board, who occupied this position until 2009, was to be proved correct. The Cayenne saw the sports car manufacturer reach new customers and markets, even though there were strong reservations among some fans of the brand.

“At the company, the Cayenne was quickly accepted. But the Porsche clubs were less enthusiastic. There were some strong headwinds,” recalls Hunger. And yet the numbers proved Porsche right. This is because Wiedeking and the entire management team were wrong about one thing: the Porsche Cayenne was not, as originally planned, delivered to 25,000 customers a year. Porsche sold 276,652 examples of the first generation, known in-house as the E1, over eight model years – equivalent to just less than 35,000 vehicles per year. The third generation (E3) is now rolling off the production line, and the millionth Cayenne is already history. Well over 80,000 examples were delivered in 2021.

The dealers were given a preview of the first Porsche SUV we were transported in blacked out coaches to the secret design studio. We go in to see cars sitting up on platforms. We found ourselves walking round not quite sure what we thought. I just wanted to find a pretty angle! I though 'cause it was up high, maybe it looks better when it was on the floor. It was a massive thing, later I'd try to explain what it looked like to people, but couldn't. It was such a departure from what we knew.

“The Cayenne stands for a spirited driving experience. It doesn’t care about the surface."
25 PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU

PORSCHE CAYENNE 957 2008-2010

The developers of the first Cayenne generation already had a variant model with dedicated on-road performance in mind when it came to expanding the model series shortly after its successful debut. Oliver Laqua, now the overall vehicle project manager for the Cayenne, was already working as a concept engineer for the E1 in 1998 and, in 2004, was commissioned to design a Cayenne that was particularly sporty in every respect. The young engineer’s ambition was clear from the start, as Laqua aimed to develop a particularly lightweight vehicle under the project name ‘Roadrunner’. “We planned to dispense with the transfer case, because that saved another 80 kilograms of weight. And we thought about four racing bucket seats for further weight reduction and a more emotive feel,” Laqua recalls today. However, the fact that the ‘Roadrunner’ was to be offered exclusively with rear-wheel drive met with as little enthusiasm from the board as did the rather impractical bucket seats.

The initial spark: From the "Roadrunner" to the first GTS of the modern era

When it came to the powertrain system, however, the developers got their way: a naturally aspirated V8 engine instead of a turbocharged one. “In this project, it wasn't just the power that counted; the car also had to have real throttle response,” says Laqua. Standard equipment included a six-speed manual gearbox and a specially developed chassis. For the first time, the steel suspension was combined with the PASM controlled damping system – a concept that until then had been reserved for two-door sports cars. The front and rear resembled the Cayenne Turbo. The wheel arch extensions flared out by around 14 millimetres on each side, making the newcomer the most visually striking model. It was also 24 mm lower than the Cayenne S.

997 THE 2004 TO 2008

PORSCHE MODEL SPOTLIGHT

From 2004, the Porsche 911 was available in more different versions than ever before: Customers could choose from a Coupé or Targa, Cabriolet or Speedster, rear- or all-wheeldrive, narrow or widened bodywork, with water-cooled naturally-aspirated and turbo engines, a GTS or the GT2, GT2 RS or GT3 sport versions, or either of two GT3 RS models. Including special models, the range had a total of 24 model variants – supplemented by a wide range of personalisation options.

With the design of the type 997, Porsche made the 911 even sharper thanks to a more dynamic and powerful look. The Carrera was already noticeably more masculine with more pronounced shaping of the rear end, while the width of the S, GT and Turbo models grew by 44 millimetres. The type 997 set itself apart from its predecessor by the steeper, round clear-glass headlights, marking a return to an important style element of the air-cooled 911 models.

The 911 Carrera with a 239 KW (325 PS), 3.6 litre boxer engine, and the 911 Carrera S, powered by a newly developed 3.8 litre engine, which delivers 261 KW (355 PS). With torque of 400 Newton meters, the S model surges from zero to 100 kph in 4.8 seconds. The Carrera does this in exactly five seconds. Top speeds for the Carrera and Carrera S are 285 kph and 293 kph respectively.

28 PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU
"The 997 generation above all represented a step forward into modern times in terms of the visual styling"

Bill Pie was a very competent rally driver particularly in tarmac rallies - we were having lunch one day, in late 2007 and it was called to Bill’s attention that Sean Lygo was sitting at a nearby table.

Bill immediately said “oh ****!” Bill had ordered a 997 911 GT2 to use in Targa Tasmania but was later advised by Jim Richards that he needed 4WD to win and that the GT2, while being immensely capable was not the ideal car to take the top step of the podium due to it’s 2WD configuration. He reneged on the deal and didn't buy the car.

Bill was visibly embarrassed that day because he had not come across Sean since. After a while Sean noticed us and came over and after saying hello to all at the table said: “Billy I've got 20 grand in an account of yours that I've been meaning to call you about to see if you want me to give it back to you, or what do you want to do?”

Bill was immensely relieved because Sean gave him a side exit, and was very happy to get the deposit back without any drama. It's situations like that where Sean shows his genuine class and experience with people, he turned a potentially awkward meeting on its head with ease.

SEAN LYGO'S THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY WITH PORSCHE

Winter magic in Willoughby a place like no other

On Saturday August 6th 2022, Porsche Centre Willoughby welcomed our "PCW Family" to join in celebrating a distinguished milestone - Sean Lygo's 30th Anniversary with Porsche. Dinner guests in attendance experienced our North Shore dealership draped in a lavish alpine winter kingdom. Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate!

31 PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU
Porsche CEO Daniel Schmollinger

With everything we have endured over the last 2 years, Porsche Centre Willoughby GM Sean Lygo and Marketing Manager Bonita Jones wanted to mark Sean's 30 year milestone with an occasion in the tradition of Porsche launch events. In the thirty years he has spent with Porsche he has attended so many car releases that they must all be blending together into one extravagant celebration of Porsche enthusiasm.

Sean tell us the highlight experiences from thirty years with Porsche; The global Boxster release in Arizona was a definite highlight and a god send after many tough years. (See page 18), the 991 911 release in South Africa's Cape Town was stellar - the event featured fighter jets flying from below our lofty venue and climbed up and flying past the vast windows to everyone's wonder! Truly fantastic. Another was being lead into a secret night launch which turned out to be literally on the race track in Spain, we had no indication of where we were, until headlights appeared driving straight towards us. Little did we know we were above the track and the lights flew underneath us. Our minds were blown.

"I was lost for words a few months ago at a meeting in Melbourne when Porsche CEO Daniel Schmollinger presented me with a very special award for my 30 years with the brand."

Inspired by such events the Willoughby events team created an outdoor luxury winter dining experience, inside the dealership. Tables and guests were surrounded by a winter kingdom to celebrate Sean's 30 years spent in the driving seat positioned in the end office! He shares; I have had three sets of carpets, two new walls, 5 telephone systems, 6 different computers, 3 desks, 2 tables and hundreds of mobile phones!

While it's a singular milestone, this night is actually more about Willoughby's very special clients and really who are very much part of the PCW Family. Sean continues; Looking at the very impressive list of names, I can visualize the cars you have bought from us over the years, some of them are still in your stables at home. Is there another car manufacturer that can talk about their owners like Porsche?

When I cast my mind back to 1992, 30 years ago, Porsche Cars only delivered 55 new cars, a new 911 was $181,900, a Family home was $250,000, a big month for us was 4 new cars! Now a big month is 80!

There are times one remembers certain events in life, 1963 the Kennedy assassination, I was 12, playing billiards at boarding school in Surrey. 1969 when we landed on the moon, I was

working on USAF base in Wiesbaden, very special day. 1989 the Berlin Wall came down and east met west, I had been in Sydney for 4 years. 1992 I was offered a new job by Laurie Sutton, finally I had found my new home.

As I just said, tonight is about you, our way of saying thank you. We try to exceed your expectations and sometimes we do, I apologise now for the times we didn't.

Unexpected delays for your new car, as we are now experiencing, we have some 600 outstanding orders for new Porsches! That is models either on the assembly line, on a ship or just simply on a contract to supply one... One day soon!

On Thursday evening we held a cocktail party "Winter Warmer at Willoughby" for all clients that have cars on order which are not yet on the assembly line. Out of the 220 that came, a staggering 72% had never bought a car from us before. They have simply ordered a Porsche and are sitting at home waiting, probably in their garage, imagining! Or on the configurator adding options!

I can see a few here tonight in that predicament, Lionel Lee and Lisa for sure... Bob Forbes, David Withers, Nicky Scali, George Bushman definitely, Mayo always, Don Spencer just keeps trying to take his daughter Danielle's which was only delivered last night!

Ed Braude and Ninette have a new one and are now planning on the next new one! Paul Lee is in line for a GT3 ...we hope, Paul and Ray definitely in line for the red one upstairs as you've paid already! Dave Callus just received his 911 GTS, Michael Tang is waiting for his second GT3, Ted just bought his goodness knows which number for Sally.

Gerard and Dana cannot fit any more in their garages, Joseph has his GT3 and I believe wants to add a Cayman GT4RS, if Pauline will let him! Colin and Matt have a sensational new one at home and Colin is about to trade that Ferrari in, Jeff Krug has his GT3 Touring and just will not sell it to us, you have others Jeff! Georgia has an S and really should have a GTS James! Mark and Anna, we go back, right? So many cars.

I could go on for another half an hour, you are all BRAND AMBASSADORS for Porsche and it has been an honour to look after you these past 30 years. Andrea, you just have to sell that Ferrari Roma!

Joseph Cincotta and Pauline, also dear friends to Sharon and I, Joseph I thank you for once again always being there, especially in Berlin! When we were late for a flight. All I ask is that you keep buying cars and do not let Pauline tempt you away!

Dr Doug Hor and Judi, he is our Porsche Dr and our Family Dr, he also holds the record for the most kilometres driven on one tank of fuel in his new Hybrid. I believe it was 2,150? Thank you Doug, you are the best.

We welcome this evening Mr Daniel Schmollinger and wife Constanze from Porsche Cars Australia. Daniel took over from Sam Curtis, whom you would have known, as CEO and Managing Director of PCA, in September 2021. He has been with Porsche for some 18 years plus.

Lee Koudsy, and his wife Jill from LSR Autobody our Authorised panel shop. Lee is one of my closest friends, we go back to 1992 when he was first appointed a Porsche and Ferrari panel shop, thank you for always being there, any accident, paint problem or any other drama, he is there with a solution!

Tonight I wish to salute a long term client / friend of ours, Mr Dean Wills who passed away on July 16th, 6 days after his 89th birthday. Dean was well known as Head of Coca Cola in Australia and a prolific car collector and car buyer. He even built a wonderful track an hour out of Sydney so he could drive fast! Normally he would have 14 exotic cars in his garage, you name it, he has had it! A gentleman to the very end, one of the most decent people I have known.

While we are getting sentimental, I also want to thank Lionel Lee for his unconditional friendship, another friend who is always there and always makes my day. It is a pleasure to have you both, Lionel and Lisa, here tonight.

I truly have had the absolute pleasure to be the General Manager here at Porsche Centre Willoughby for the past 30 years, thank you.

CAYMAN THE 2004 - 2012

PORSCHE MODEL SPOTLIGHT

Introducing the Cayman, Porsche now offers another attractive version of this outstanding Sports Coupé. Power comes from Porsche's 2.7-litre six-cylinder boxer for the new Porsche Cayman.

Like the Porsche 911 models and the Cayman S, the Cayman features VarioCam Plus technology, the engine developing its maximum output of 180 kW (245 PS) at 6500 rpm, with peak torque of 273 Nm between 4600 and 6000 rpm. Specific output is 66.9 kW (91.2 PS) per litre.

With a weight of just 1300 kilos, the 2.7-litre boxer ensures acceleration to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Fitted with sixspeed manual gearbox, the Cayman has a top speed of 260 km/h, while top speed with Tiptronic S is 253 km/h.

At first sight, the Cayman S looks likes a typical Porsche sports car. At the same time, however, its autonomous design ensures that it stands out against the Boxster and 911 Carrera. The new front is accentuated by oval main headlamps and distinctive air inlets.

GEN TWO THE 2008 TO 2011

There just isn’t anything about what the 911 Carrera S does that dips down to even Very Good, let alone Mediocre. Porsche just, consistently, builds better performance cars at this sort of money than anybody else.

The bloody thing’s also got the hide to ride better than half the cars we had on PCOTY, even if there’s a fair whack of rear tyre noise. It’s a great car. Not quite perfect but bloody hell, it’s getting close. And it’s more than good enough to clean sweep PCOTY 2005.

This will go down as the PCOTY that was dominated from the first turn of the key by one car. At least, that’s how my memory has it recorded. After day one, the 997 911 Carrera S was proudly laying open its heart, soul and ability to the judges, daring them to find fault enough to hand the trophy to something else.

MOTOR - PCOTY 2005

After the success of 996 and financial strategy of parts sharing between models, Porsche put it's foot down with the 997 generation 911 after 996. We started a fire with 997.2 and PCW really started to sell cars.

GENERATION

With what was an all-new generation of 911 in the 991 firmly on the horizon, the company sought to celebrate this era with a series of run-out models that would truly leave their mark. Over a period of 730 days between 2010 and 2011, the company released no fewer than six special editions, all a consummate raid of the parts bin at least or, at best, a truly unique car, courtesy of the Exclusive department. HYPERCAR

A hybrid hypercar like no other. Two electric motors and a 9,000rpm 4.6-litre racing V8 contained within a two-seat roadster frame that’s almost entirely carbon fibre.

The Porsche 918 Spyder at Willoughby, Porsche sent the Spyder to us for 5 days, we were not to drive it, but to show it to our clients and display the wonderful thing on the dealership floor.

My Aftersales Manager Mark Blundell came to me and said we need to move it upstairs from the workshop, I said I'll drive it and you sit in the passenger seat and we’ll take it up the ramp and put in the showroom, easy. So we drive up the ramp from service, and aim to turn left into the showroom but we can't make the turn due to a car blocking the drive so I decide I’ll use the street to go around and come back in the other driveway entrance and in the front doors.

A condition of Porsche lending us the car was that we were not to take it on public roads. Of course, that's fine, no problem. BUT... In the 4 seconds I ventured out onto the road and back into the dealership driveway, a supercar loving paparazzi snapped a photograph of us! Sure enough it's on the internet! Now I'm on the internet (unbeknownst to me) driving a left-hand-drive hypercar on Sydney roads on German plates. Next, the directors at Porsche call me and ask “Sean, what are you doing, you were told not to drive that car!” I answer, “we haven’t, why would we drive it on the road”. They send me the photograph! I explained that I drove it from the workshop to the showroom etc, that was funny and luckily they saw the funny side too.

MAXIMUM POWER IN THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

The transition from cruising silently at city speeds of 60 km/h to roaring race car for the road reaching a top speed of 350 km/h took just 40 seconds, completing an achievement no other production car has ever managed on Australian roads.

The controlled test took place with a professional driver at the wheel on the only public road in Australia where such a feat is possible – the Northern Territory’s section of straight, open speed highway. The use of radios and spotters ensured the road was completely devoid of traffic at the time.

Porsche Intelligent Performance enables the 918 Spyder to perform at both ends of the driving spectrum, showcasing leading edge hybrid technology that will eventually transfer into more Porsche road cars in the future.

This synthesis of hybrid powertrain technology already exists in three Porsche road cars – the 918 Spyder, Panamera S E-Hybrid and Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

CAYENNE 958.1 2011-2014 SURF WAGON

The flicker of the garage light reveals the ultimate road going wave magnet. The 2014 Porsche Cayenne GTS, propelled by the last of the naturally aspirated V8 engines.

Surfboards, wetsuits and supplies loaded up, it’s time for my favourite moment. Wakey wakey, 309 kW (420 PS) of insanely technical V8 fury bursts to life. That dry-sumped, aluminium engine block and heads with four overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and lift with direct petrol injection are a masterpiece all working in unison at 5:30am.

At the expense of my neighbours’ sanity, it is a sound that I will take to my death bed.

A future grandson may ask me if I have any regrets, I’ll reply, “I only wish I had woken my entire street with a few stabs of the throttle in my GTS”.

Not wanting to live with regret, the revs flare and peak in a mash of metal followed by an over-run crackle that truly warms the heart.

In a blur of streetlights and cats-eye reflectors the GTS swallows up street after street, en route to the ocean. This Porsche has a menacing elegance with its gaping vented front-end borrowed from the Cayenne Turbo, side skirts and wider wheel arches filled with 21” rims… this is a good looking vehicle.

The tuned chassis is in its element in the morning haste to meet the sun. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is alive and brings the body closer to the road by 24 mm relative to the Cayenne S. Inside, the essence of the car continues, there’s leather and Alcantara but beyond the materials used, it leaves a feeling that great thought has gone into the elements surrounding you. Truly made for people with a tight grip on life, this is a place to find much needed peace.

The new Boxster’s enhanced presence is undeniable. Purposeful lines and a sharper more striking appearance commands a healthy respect on the road plus a few admiring glances.

Porsche has always had its roots firmly in motorsport on both road and track. Our Porsche Boxster S traces its roots from the Porsche 356/1 and the 550 Spyder, with the key feature being its uncompromising midengined layout. Known throughout the racing world for its agility and performance, it delivers optimum power and torque as well as exceptional fuel economy.

With history behind us and in readiness for ribbons of twisting tarmac ahead, we hit the Sport Plus button: tightening the throttle and suspension responses. Revs flair as we engage one of our state’s best drives. Bursts of light fight their way through the gum tree lined Putty Road, striking the car as we cover the coarse chip ground with an urgency delivered from the 3.4L flat six. Heart rates and confidence are both on the rise with sharp responses and seemingly infinite grip levels on tap, the Boxster makes any enthusiast feel like a professional driver.

RENOVATIONS THE

Porsche Centre Willoughby has a long history with prestige vehicles; beginning 60 years ago in 1963 when Scuderia Veloce Motors registered their name as a motor dealer.

In 1983 the Sutton family purchased the Scuderia group: building a new facility in Willoughby in 1991 for Porsche and Ferrari and later on in 1994, adding Chrysler Jeep to their stable.

By then the Porsche franchise in Willoughby was well established and in 2003 the dealership underwent a total refurbishment into the building you know today.

“Porsche stands for life dreams and for a strong community of our friends and fans. We are designing our Porsche dealerships to be forwardlooking gathering places to experience the brand.” Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG.

In 1969 Scuderia Veloce Motors, now Porsche Centre Willoughby, was appointed a Porsche dealer.

In 1996 Scuderia Veloce Motors moved Ferrari to a new location in William St, Sydney and transformed the Porsche dealership with the arrival of Boxster.

Macan brought change, with $4 million invested in redesigning and renovating our dealership showroom in line with Porsche Corporate Identity. It also brought a new level with rooftop parking, an elevator and a flexible showroom configuration.

More importantly I appreciated the open and honest nature of our relationship. At times there are differences of opinion between manufacturers and their dealers on matters for instance such as how much to spend on marketing or allocations of hard to get special models. Discussions with Sean were always tough but without politics and nonsense. When the discussion was over we agreed with a handshake and I could always rely on that as indeed also with his employers, the Sutton family."

The icon of German sports-car construction has proved once again that ambitious performance on the track can be compatible with dependability in everyday use.

Unfaltering in day-to-day use, the Porsche 911 impresses on the merits of its mechanical grip alone. On the racetrack, when all control systems are set for maximum sportiness, it holds the car to the track as if it were adhered with superglue.

The car looks fantastic with the completely revised front end but undoubtedly the best view is from the rear. With a wider rear track, wider rear tyres plus the body of the car is 44mm wider. All of that highlighted by a red rear strip, for the first time illuminated. The car looks familiar, very muscular, very powerful and very commanding.

THE 991.2 2015 - 2019

ONE.TWO

In 2015 the Porsche 911 991.2 Carrera S had a 3.0 litre flat six with two turbochargers. It generated a power output of 309 kW (420 PS) and the maximum torque was a mighty 500 Nm, available from as low as 1,700 rpm.

Yet it was not all rush and lag as the then new 911 engine had been created to appeal to an audience enthralled by the sound and peaky nature of the naturally aspirated flat six. There is no on/off switch here: it is like riding with a skilled driver where you cannot determine the transition of break and throttle. In other words, high compression and a high engine speed combined with good modulation of power output and surprisingly low fuel consumption, makes for an entertaining and fluid drive.

My 991.2 911 GT3, naturally unites superlative performance with a down-to-earth spirit. It has a striking presence on the roads and is right at home on the race track, a perfect step up from my previous GTS.

At the start of Paul’s Porsche journey he was only eyeing for an entry point into the 911 world: “I was looking for a used 911 when advice from a friend said: Pay more money and buy it from the dealer get the Porsche warranty. I bought a two-year-old 997, which ended up having some technical complications quickly diagnosed and remedied by PCW. This experience of a brand backing their product one hundred percent, ignited a loyalty between Porsche Centre Willoughby and myself which is still strong today."

Some may say it satisfies Ferry Porsche’s vision to build “a small, lightweight sports car that uses energy efficiently”, even more than the 911. Two seats, a low, midmounted engine, well balanced weight distribution, with a blend of performance and efficiency in the form of a turbo, 4-cylinder engine. Could Ferry’s statement describe the 718 Boxster S - a sports car, more succinctly?

Stewart Budd, PCW’s resident Porsche connoisseur and sales executive of almost five years, was asked to determine just how closely the 718 Boxster S holds true to this

statement. Stewart is a passionate Porsche person through and through. He often spends his weekends exploring new driving routes and always has a recommendation or two up his sleeve for a quick, spirited drive. So, when presented with the opportunity to test the ideal sports car over ideal sports car terrain, we didn’t have to ask twice… We’ll let Stew take the wheel from here.

The plan is to head west and drive out over the Blue Mountains. Our weapon of choice for the drive? The 718 Boxster S, complete with special-order Lava Orange paintwork, 20-inch Carrera S wheels in

gloss black, and most importantly (for me), Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Active Suspension Management.

Our journey starts to get interesting with the Bells Line of Road taking us up high and down again in almost the same breath. It is long, flowing, at times tight and technical and leads all the way to Lithgow. This road in itself is a great drive, but this occasion and this car are something to be celebrated. We will be taking the long way and exploring many of the unknown back roads. Excerpt from W magazine issue 17 published April 2017

Porsche devotee Doug Hor talks to W about discovering the hidden gem in the Porsche range, and why its borrowed hypercar technology is the only choice.

“I bought my first Porsche in 1979 in my first year in General Practice. It was a Porsche 924 and over the next 40 years I moved through most the Porsche models with 928S, 911, 911 Carrera, Boxsters, Cayenne, e-Hybrid and I am now ordering an additional grandchild friendly Macan.

In between there was a smattering of BMW and Mercedes as the 928S had to go when my daughter grew taller than my wife.

The Cayenne decision was made when my 911 Carrera could not drive up the access road to our beach house without bottoming out and has remained an essential part of our driving mix. The Boxster satisfies some semblance of performance characteristics but remains my wife’s everyday drive.

I picked up the latest Cayenne E-Hybrid on the day we returned from skiing in Japan in March as I had waited for

the upgraded functionality with the latest production series. I had hoped for the improved autonomous towing capability slated for towing and was presented with the most impressive Porsche I have ever owned with technology derived from the 918 Hyper-car.

My first two tanks of premium unleaded (75L x 2) gave a range of over 4500 kilometers! My average range is now at 2000 kms per tank which is both unbelievable and mind-blowing. Published: January 2020

During 2017 every time I saw Sean, he would tell me “you must do Ice Force, a unique experience, I’ve been 11 times, but won’t go again“ I lined a friend up to go with me. As finalization approached my friend fell out, I told Sean I wouldn’t go. He insisted I should still attend, but I said no. A few days later he said he would go so I would go.

The deal was sealed. We travelled to Finland in Jan 2018, and it was amazing. We boarded a flight in Finland heading to Munich and connecting to Dubai, an hour into the flight, smoke was coming from the cockpit and we were forced to make an emergency landing in Berlin. No airline representative was there and many bewildered passengers wondering what to do.

Sean said we must get on another flight to Munich quickly or we would miss our connection. So Sean headed to nearest Lufthansa counter (unattended) and went behind picked up the phone and started dialing. No luck, but we noticed a direction on the board to a different gate. We headed there to find a line of 100 people trying to rebook and 2 staff at the desk. Sean said, “you get on the line and I’ll go behind the counter” I saw him walk past everybody, go behind the counter and started talking to one of the staff. Next minute he is waving frantically, I go up to the counter and he somehow has convinced them to get us on the next plane to Munich. I was impressed.

We made our connecting flight out of Munich by the tightest of margins. The trip was truly memorable not only for the driving, but also for the experience of traveling with one of the legends of the motor industry. Over the years he has sold me many vehicles, each time I have wisely listened to his sage advice on buying and selling. He will always give you his honest opinion, and somehow makes the handing over of large sums of money much less painful. PCW is extremely lucky to have him at its helm.

"Unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA, with a much more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor, the new 911 is timeless – and also modern"

THE 982

718 BOXSTER & CAYMAN

At first glance: sporty. At second glance: blown away. Precise, not fanciful. Self-assured, not restrained. Low, wide and sleek. The exterior design of the 718 models is distinguished by sporty edges and clearly defined formal contours.

What is it that makes the 718 models so special? Their performance, their handling, their design, their generous amount of space with two luggage compartments. But most of all: a mid-engined layout that makes all this possible in the first place.

718 Style Edition.

The 718 Boxster Style Edition and the 718 Cayman Style Edition bring colour to city life, with highcontrast design highlights for the exterior and interior. This is where creativity meets sportiness – your 718 Style Edition transforms the street into your very own playground.

718 GTS 4.0 models.

More six appeal on four wheels is hardly possible. With a sports car that will thoroughly mix up your senses – and still touch your heart. 100% Porsche, six cylinders, one driver: you.

The 718 models were made for the sport of it. They are mid-engined roadsters with one goal: to take the everyday out of every day.

"I still get into the car every morning and after 30 years, turn the key, a slight smile and buzz as the engine fires and the exhaust crackles in the garage; EVERY MORNING. That is the Porsche experience."

Thank you

MMay I start by thanking the thousands of Porsche clients over the past 30 years that I have been fortunate to know, without them my last three decades would surely have been nowhere near as exciting as they were. Each W magazine for the next two years will have an update on the future of PCW, we can announce today and outline our plans for the future.

Sometime in late 2024 we will open a brand new Porsche Approved Service Centre in Hotham Parade, Artarmon.

We are currently working with our architects and developing a site of a minimum 8,000 square metres. For once we will have "Plenty of Parking!" for all our clients, together with Service and Parts and our Approved Used Cars on display.

"But wait there’s more!" The following year we will carry out the most major renovation to date at Willoughby, a total change of character to a Destination Centre as opposed to a Porsche Showroom. We will encourage people to visit, eat at the café, watch videos, meet friends and business associates here as well as buy cars!
