No matter what time of year it is, it is always so lovely to get out into nature. Having grown up by the sea I still have such a love for being near the ocean –hearing the crashing of the waves, feeling the spray in the air.

It has long been understood that people would take in the air by the sea to improve their mood. The Victorians would prescribe sea air to cure a myriad of ailments, and while some of their studies were unfounded, the positives of spending time by the sea are still celebrated today. We all know the Dutch culture favours biking as a mode of getting around, so it is no surprise to read that they are at the forefront when it comes to innovative ways of enhancing the biking experience. Dutch design office studio MOM have created a bicycle helmet using biomaterials mycelium and hemp. Hemp has long been championed for its myriad uses; its high carbon-capture profile and the strength of its fibre have made it a darling in the world of eco-friendly construction. Now mycelium is being used in conjunction to create hardwearing materials, with the mycelium being cultivated using hemp flakes. Made completely free from fossil fuels, it follows the model of a circular economy, by using raw materials that are kept longer in production cycles and can be used repeatedly, therefore generating much less waste. The main shell of the helmet is formed from mycelium, the root-like structure of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. While there is still much unknown about this material, it is being manipulated into building multifunctional textiles. By heating the mycelium for a short time during the growing process, it can be formed into the rigid shape of the helmet and it becomes lightweight enough to resemble a traditional bicycle helmet. The various elements of the helmet are combined during the process. This allows the mycelium to bond with the hemp textile that forms the strap and outer skin, providing extra support and removing the need for glue. The mycelium, in combination with the hemp, makes this helmet extremely durable and hard wearing, while also being breathable for the wearer.

You know when you hear that you need to be specific....it’s hard. I recall looking at my vision board and trying to pin myself down...some of my dreams were still too vague and whispery when it came to specifics. When I heard of what Betsy Cornwell had done in Connemara, with an old knitting factory, I had the sense of an oh-so-specific dream made true. I was in awe.

Inspired.Betsyhas created a “childcare inclusive art retreat space for single parent artists”. It is now both her family home and her labour of love. “I created this space,” she says, “because it was the kind of thing I longed for when I became a single parent, and the kind of thing I still long for.”She recently offered a residency placement to single parents, inviting them to write to her with their story. She received 162 applications from across the world. All are invited to book a stay at the old knitting factory, join Betsy for her Sunday monthly writing workshops (free for single parents), her monthly online book club or the various retreats she holds from her creative space.

What this pioneering woman has done is help create new societal values. To honour and generously support those in vulnerable positions like single parents. To think of their needs beyond surviving. To see them as humans with potential yet to offer the world through their creative gifts, rather than leaving them holed up in the world of struggle.

You’ll find lots of ways to read more of her story, get involved, support or meet with Betsy online

REVISITING THE ROOTS OF OUR ANCESTORS.

1 Expeditions of the young and old PARK ADVENTURES .

In springtime, I love collecting elderflowers while out on walks to make cordial, which is so easy to whip up. It is delicious with sparkling water and works very well in a G&T. August and into October is a great time to go foraging

My rambunctious toddler always wants to be moving, doing, climbing and generally exploring the most hard-to-reach places. He only enters the playground these days for the satisfaction of climbing over the fence at the back, leaving everyone behind, and heading into the woods where he loves to scare himself, hide and climb the leastinviting-to-human-feet slopes.

It is important to have a bit of knowledge before you embark into the wild with your basket. Forage in such a way as to make sure more sprouts will grow, ensuring the rich resources will remain. Care must be given to only take as much as you need, leaving the rest for the wildlife that depends on it to survive year round.

8

Foraging is a fun, wholesome and holistic activity to enjoy anytime of the year. Done right and with care, it is a sustainable way to enjoy the outdoors and seek out little gifts from nature. Ireland is home to an abundance of perennial plants and weeds that are edible and can be used in many ways. Our ancestors knew so much about the delicate ways of foraging, and while we have lost a lot of that knowledge over the years, there has been a reignited interest in exploring the land and the ancient ways of living on it.

for blackberries, which are in abundance in Ireland, ripening in late August. Pick the darkest, plumpest berries to make blackberry wine, which is a similar process to the making of mead. All you need is blackberries, sugar, yeast and a large vessel, and patience to allow it time to ferment.

It turns out that ‘Cycling Without Age’ is a community-based, charitable organisation. You can contact them yourself, or for a loved one, and arrange a leisurely park expedition. So, having said I would spread the word in thanks for making the end to our expedition so easeful, you can find them on Facebook!

When he wanted to detour for ice-cream, I thought I would faint. I would have to carry his bike too, somehow, if he had ice cream in his hands. Off he went in the direction of ice-cream... His bike now at my feet, I turned around and, miraculously, right beside us was a bike taxi. I was told that there were for people with disabilities and could be booked for tours around the park. My face must have dropped, for the man piped up then saying he had a break and could easily drop us to my car. Off we went, right out of the park and onto the road where we were dropped at our car. It was heaven-sent.

Recently, we were on one of our expeditions. I had launched myself out the

front door alongside him, bringing too much ‘stuff’ and too few bags to hold them in. I had ended up trailing him around the park with a large plastic spade and rake in one hand, a digger in the other and a bag on my back.

This feeling of total awareness came after a moment of despair and shame. I came to the realisation that I was dependent on a substance that did not serve my highest good. The substance which is the most socially acceptable and yet the most damaging finally broke me. The awareness came when I realised after years of feeling like I needed this to survive, that I could not only survive but thrive in a life without alcohol. There was a fear of having to rely on myself in situations rather than this party elixir; this turned out to be totally unfounded. I thought living alcohol free in Ireland would be tough but once I took the first step, each day, week and month became easier. I am so grateful for the awareness of being able to look at the bigger picture – to finally start living the life I always wanted.

When we have the awareness of a problem, we can set about finding a solution but the first step is always awareness. Awareness of our surrounding environments – including the cities, towns and villages we live in – also leads to a greater level of understanding and fulfilment. Whether it’s a new restaurant, café, book, beach or friend that we have yet to be introduced to – we have the capacity to enhance our lives with the new potential we have to explore our environments in a richer sense through a newfound awareness. The potentials, solutions and adventures we seek are always around us and we sometimes only need to start with awareness and then listen within the gentle stillness of our own intuition to find the next step forward. This is something I am continually learning but also appreciating and understanding as I learn more about the wonderful culture, people and spirituality of Ireland. I also believe that as we change our perspectives and feelings that we have about our place, we can also change our experience of it. Life can be a wonderful process of learning, allowing and improving that everyone can partake in.

AWARENESS

I remember it was around my 30th birthday, I was living an easy and comfortable life. I had everything I needed and I was totally sure that I was living the life I wanted. At the time I was working as a sales assistant and I remember I went to put a shoe box back in the storeroom. I was staring at the box and thinking about my life; was I living the life that I wanted or was I just scared to change it? That box symbolised my life and made me realise that I wasn’t creating the life I wanted for myself. A voice kept saying, if you want to change your life do it now and set your spirit free – so I did. I quit my job and I can say that I became aware that I own my life and I can live the life I want. When I am feeling lost or afraid, I go back to the memory of that box which makes me aware of who and where I want to be.

Neil Shanahan

I like this quote from Anthony de Mello’s book Awareness:

It has no limits and no judgement. Love, this sea of love just loves and deeply holds us in its gentle embrace. It knows us completely, everything we do or say or think – but it never judges us. Love just is. I didn’t want to come back into my body, which I could see clearly sitting on the kitchen chair. But I knew that I had to. It was an inner knowing. So slowly and reluctantly, I began to return with such a sense of deep gratitude for everything. Eyes to see beauty in the middle of messiness. Ears to hear the music behind the words of shared pain and joy.

“A nice definition of an awakened person is a person who no longer marches to the drum of society – a person who dances to the tune of the music that springs up from within.”

I guess that I must have been awake on 20th April 1988 but at 11am that morning I’d no clue what was about to happen that would change my life completely. I had a visitor who I knew well and we were just sitting together in my kitchen drinking coffee and catching up. Normal everyday things that happen all the time. As my friend rose to leave she asked me if I would like a prayer before she left. Well of course I said “yes”.

11

She came over and gently placed her hands on my shoulders. Immediately I was out of my body and seemed to be floating in a sea of the purest love. This love is indescribable but I knew that it was and is totally unconditional – it surrounds us all the time and is in every cell of our bodies. This love is in all of the natural world. It is in the trees and the grass and all the animals. It flows in the rivers and seas and the very stones beneath our feet.

Sophie Iremonger

My friend didn’t know what had happened and there were no words to even begin to communicate. To this day there are still no words, just wonder and awe. Call the experience what you will. Some say a release of kundalini energy. Others say it was an “Adamic” experience. I can only say that in the intervening years the moment has never diminished. My journey is full of mountains and valleys just like all of us. Nobody has to live trying to get approval from others.

My music stirs the sacred and positive in my life. Can you let your music do the same for you?

Patricia Stuart

One of life’s joys is tending to my little allotment. Crooked cobs I grew myself on crooked stalks. Nurtured spindly grass stretching green claws. An Aztec mystery for €3.99 with a picture of a smiling grandpa holding a pitch-fork on the packet. “Come on in, my amber waves of waving grain are great tonight.” Each corn cob probably ends up costing 50 euro given the time and effort growing it. Last time I had any awareness outside myself was when I ate this corn cob. Looking down at the chewed up remains, yellow imprints of tooth-marks in a fibrous mass, perfect craters representing the petty ravages of human teeth, I realised they were the same as any other animal’s tooth-marks, that I was an animal and that I would die, and there was some comfort in that. Awareness for me comes from knowing we are all the same – energy moving through a life trying to create meaning.

A PROFOUND APPROACH TO PARENTING.

on attachment theory. It questions most traditional assumptions about children and proposes a new approach that includes non-punitive discipline and a tried and tested mechanism for healing from stress and trauma. Aletha Solter went on to publish four further books including the revolutionary ‘Tears and Tantrums: What to do when Babies and Children cry’ (Shining Star Press, 1998). Each book adds to an understanding of this practical and paradigm-shifting approach to parenting.

Anna Cole, PhD, Regional Lead, Hand in Hand Parenting, handinhandparenting.org

In the last issue I shared about a traumatic loss experienced in my extended family. Staying right in the now, in this present moment – moment by moment – and being supported to release the shocking emotions present, was how those closest to the epicentre of that trauma somehow got through that time. By becoming present and aware, the moment and the possibility of change has space. So, it feels fitting in this issue of Positive Life on the theme of awareness, to focus on a profound parenting approach called simply ‘Aware Parenting’. This approach has its roots in the same fertile soil as the ‘Parenting by Connection’ or Hand in Hand approach that I teach.Backin 1984, Aletha Solter, a Swiss/ American developmental psychologist published her first book, ‘The Aware Baby’. She headed up the introduction with the Mayan proverb, “For in the baby lies the future of the world…” and she called for a revolutionary approach to parenting. At the time she had no idea if people would read, let alone endorse her approach. Nearly 40 years later her book has touched the lives of tens of thousands of families and has been translated into a number of languages. It has contributed to a groundswell of quiet revolution among parents and professionals practising the ‘Aware Parenting’ approach.

Aware Parenting is a philosophy of child rearing based on research into child development, drawing on and building

In western industrialised nations parents have traditionally emphasised the development of independence and the acquisition of linguistic and cognitive skills over inter-dependence, co-operative solutions to disputes and the cultivation of peace. The idea is that children must become intellectually competent and self-reliant in order to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. Vocabulary, reading and maths and the speed with which children can do these along with superficial knowledge deemed important by school curriculum writers, is valued at the expense of the development of deep thinking, creativity, cooperation and empathy.Thatempathy, so apparent in children and teens raised in this approach, and its sister approach, Hand in Hand Parenting’s ‘Parenting by Connection’, bring hope to a world that seems lopsided with conflict and ‘power-over’ nature. It returns infant and children’s nature – their innate sense of the meaning and purpose of emotional release to the heart of parenting, and changes the world, one parent at a time.

As I recently returned to Aletha Solter’s first book ‘The Aware Baby’ and reread her introduction, her discussion of the relationship between early infancy and non-violent approaches in the world seemed especially relevant today: “…until recently, there has been little effort in Western culture to raise children to become non-violent…because of the powerful weapons of destruction and the easy availability of guns, raising children to be non-violent is now of primary importance for everyone’s survival. We must teach children alternatives to violence for solving conflicts. We must also raise children so they will be free of pent-up rage or fear, because these emotions are so often at the root of violence. This means paying close attention to the way they get hurt and helping them heal from stress and trauma. We can no longer afford to ignore how children feel.” (Aletha Solter, The Aware Baby, Revised Edition, 2001).

I took my ten-year-old child with me the day I did the seminar. She was tucked under my wing. She felt safe and loved. She didn’t feel the need to conduct the seminar through fear – her fear was gone. She was content and calm.

ATTRACTIONPOSITIVE 14

I had worked many times with groups of people without this reaction. I knew I could not fulfil the contract with these people unless I was standing in my full personal power. In order to be effective, I had to be aligned with my powerful self and not with my fear. I knew I would only create momentum based on fear and that the results of this type of creating would be limited. I wanted this to be a success for myself and for all the people who would be listening to me. So, before developing my content for the seminar, my first point of contact was with my own inner little girl who was throwing a tantrum. I sat in meditation and I asked my little child for clarity on how to release this fear and resistance inside me.

ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR INNER CHILD.

With

I had met and acknowledged my fear and had re-parented myself in awareness. I took responsibility for my fear and decided to free myself from it. I was not a tiny child feeling ridiculed. This was not my sum total. I had acknowledged, supported and empowered myself. In doing so, I had created something entirely different internally in my life. The work was done and now it just had to ripple out into my external world.

During the days that followed I listened intently to my inner dialogue and noticed that I was repeatedly saying to myself one word – ‘ridicule’. ‘Ridicule, ridicule, ridicule,’ went over and over in my head. So, I asked that reservoir of infinite intelligence inside me why I was afraid of ridicule. The answer came during a meditation. I received a sudden memory of when I was ten years old, in primary school. I was extremely shy. Each day in school the teacher would make me stand up in front of everyone and ask me questions on what she had taught. For a painfully introverted child, this was worse than pulling out every hair in my head.

A couple of years ago I was asked to work with a large group of executives, who were top professionals in their field. They were also an extremely stressed group of individuals, who were daily faced with many difficult challenges and targets. I was delighted to work with them. However, almost immediately after getting the contract I went into extreme fear. First, in awareness, I acknowledged my inner child - that fearful part of me. I sat with myself, mindful of my fear, to examine what this had brought up for me.

was stupid and feared being ridiculed. This is the record my subconscious was playing over and over. So, for over a period of two weeks I sat regularly in a meditative visualisation with my hand on my heart and I started to connect with and comfort this beautiful, shy, innocent child. I gently spoke to her, telling her that she wasn’t stupid at all, but she was traumatised by this experience and wasn’t able to answer the teacher out of deep fear. I fully acknowledged the trauma for the first time in all thoseMindfully, years. using visualisation, I was able to replace profoundly negative feelings stored in my subconscious mind with a sense of security, trust and the feeling that it was safe to express myself without fear of ridicule.

I remember wanting to disappear into the ground. This went on day after day for two years. As the teacher persisted, I retreated further and further into myself. She was aggressive in her manner and that only compounded the problem. Looking back on it now, she was probably trying to draw me out. Unfortunately, it had quite the opposite effect. I felt ridiculed in front of all the other children in the class. I had just found the answer to my current conundrum. The explanation for my present fear was deeply lodged in the psyche of my ten-year-old self.

THE ABSOLUTELY LIFE-CHANGING ART OF BEING AWARE.

this: How do you know you have a mind? You are aware of it, right? By that rationale, within you now exists a mind and something that is aware of your mind. Within you now exist emotions and something that is aware of your emotions. And again, said differently, there is an awareness within you that is also aware of your body, life and world.

“...the awareness within you is already at peace, and therefore ‘peace is aware’ of your thoughts, emotions, body, life and world.”

My moment was picture perfect, but there was still no peace. Why? My body was sitting on a beach, but I was somewhere else in my mind. My feelings were not being caused by anything going on that day. Instead, they were the result of what was going on in my mind. I was ‘feeling my thinking’ and because my thoughts were fearful, that’s how I was feeling.Although

How is this possible? Surely, to access peace we must completely clear our mind or at least only have positive thoughts and emotions. To stop our stress and struggle, we must first heal our health issues and eradicate all of the ‘bad’ things happening in our life and world. But what if this is not the case? What if peace is possible now, and easier than you may think?Consider

This is not a new idea. St. Francis of Assisi once said: “What we are looking for is what is looking”, Rumi poetically wrote: “You wander from room to room hunting for a diamond necklace that is already around your neck”, whereas Papaji’s core teaching was always to “see the seer”. With these beautiful words, they were all pointing to the same source, where peace is always present, and inviting us to become aware of the awareness within.

The implication of this selfevident fact is massive. It means the awareness within you is already at peace, and therefore ‘peace is aware’ of your thoughts, emotions, body, life and world. I recommend reading that again, as it can completely change your life.

For years I unnecessarily postponed my peace. I spent a huge amount of time, effort and money trying to fix, change and improve everything, in order to find some peace, when peace was aware of my mind, emotions, body and life – the entire time!

was searching outside myself, instead of within. I believed I couldn’t experience any peace until my life was problem-free and perfect. As a result, it didn’t matter how much I changed my mind, fixed my problems and perfected my life – peace eluded me. I was seeking it from what I was ‘externally’ aware of, rather than what was internally aware.

I was simply looking for peace in the

wrong place. Like looking for it in a room of my house, when it’s in the garden. No matter how long I looked, I would never find it.I

See the difference? If you recognise that you tend to only focus on what you are aware of, rather than what’s aware, I invite you to make this inner shift of attention. Always remember: peace is possible – every moment – because peace is aware of everything!

Awareness is the common denominator; the subject, not the objects. Despite your thoughts and emotions coming and going, and your body, life and world constantly changing, the awareness within you remains untouched and everpresent. And this awareness which - let me repeat - is within you right now, is always still, silent, spacious, and perfectly at peace.

it was a difficult lesson to learn, I’ve since discovered that by making the shift from my mind to the moment, and from unconscious thinking to being consciously aware, I can access peace anywhere. Furthermore, inner peace is always accessible, anytime, irrespective of what may be happening in my mind,

Start to notice that inside you, right now, there is an awareness that is aware of this moment happening, including the words you are currently reading. Yes, your mind is reading, but the awareness is aware of both the words on the page, and the words in your mind, as you read.

Listen to nature, not others. Mother Nature is always willing to provide guidance

A wild woman is a representation of the wolf, the howl within. Women were designed to be wild; our wombs are the birthplace of nations, queens, kings, rulers and countries. We are powerful by nature. But often, our power gets taken from us. When you entered this world, you cried with a list of reasonable expectations. You expressed your hunger, exhaustion and need for connection. Over time you were told, “no”, “sit down” or “girls don’t act like that” and eventually you became numb to your own needs, your own truth. This can easily starve the wolf inside if you do not feed it with positivity and compassion. Forgive yourself, lick your wounds and replenish your body. Look at the wolf within, she is not interested in playing the role of the victim, Beloved. She sets healthy boundaries and protects herself. The inner wild woman wants to re-emerge, you have a calling that has spoken to you. Do not suppress her; if you do, you numb your magic and sabotage your truth. You may feel overpowered, overwhelmed, and undermined, therefore we need to rise up and take our place – as wildlings of the

The howl represents your truth and your inner magic. What are you doing to actively cultivate joy? When was the last time you howled?Speak up, Beloved! You have this beautiful howl inside of you that is waiting to awaken from the depths of your belly, reaching up through your spine until it finally escapes your lips. I invite you to rise up, despite the wounds you may still be licking. In fact, I invite you to rise up because your wounds have never looked more beautiful in the light. You are untamed, unbroken, fierce and WILD. It is time to release any traumas and open yourself up to being vibrant with ancestral powers washing over you. Your howl is beautiful because it stems from healing, depth and remembrance.

We might believe we deserve the life we lead, even if that isn’t our divine path, so we keep walking down a road that brings us to a cul-de-sac. Being conscious that our actions are affecting our overall quality of life, is awareness. Self-awareness, however, is looking deeper into our own actions to improve those Self-awarenesschoices.is a beautiful quality. I believe it makes you a better person and a more intuitive one at that. Although I have been told by a therapist, that I’m too self-aware (I didn’t know that was a thing, if I’m honest). The good thing about my oversupply of awareness is that

Awareness, I believe, is knowing the reason why we do certain things - the reason behind our choices. We place so much emphasis on where we are in life, the tangible evidence of our success - yet we don’t recognise the pattern of our behaviour that has led us there. The same is true for our failures. We make the same choices time and time again, expecting to get different results. This presents itself as a form of self-sabotage.

we’ve been thinking a certain way for years doesn’t mean it’s right. Our thoughts control our actions, therefore inhibiting us to reach our full potential sometimes.

For example, I know the ways in which I sabotage myself. I’m a person who gives in very easily. I lie in bed because things get too much. I hide because I’m afraid of pushing myself. It’s something I’m managing. I’m learning to control how I react in situations. Just because I think I should stay in bed, doesn’t mean I should. I know that when I’m sad I retreat, so right now I’m in a coffee shop. A small step to lift myself. This article has in a way inspired me to leave my ‘toxic traits’ in the past, for today. It’s an ongoing thing, we need to keep pushing ourselves because at the end of the day we deserve so much more than what we have.

with these things; however I truly believe a step to improving yourself is through therapy. Even if only for a few sessions to get into the mindset of teaching yourself how to analyse your behaviour. First, someone recognises it for you and the next thing you’re doing it yourself like a pro. From my experience, being aware was the easy part. It’s a good starting point to know why you’re doing something. However, the most difficult thing to do is change your thoughts and stop that cycle. The way we think, and see the world, is sometimes ingrained in us. However, just because

realise that “a person’s relationship to their breath is a perfect reflection of their connection and relationship to their body, to life and to the world.”

BREATHING FROM THE INSIDE OUT

“When you learn breathing from the inside out, the rewards are eternal.”

22

Dan Brule has led an extraordinary life. Throughout the many twists and turns his life has taken thus far, the breath has been a constant thread following and accompanying him. In his own words, it seems that no matter where he turned, “everything kept sticking my nose back into the breath.”Heis the author of several books on the breath, and is breath coach and trainer to many elites in their field such as Olympic athletes, martial artists, medical experts and peak performers.

Learning from the inside out means that Dan asks questions of us, rather than giving us techniques or answers. He asks us to go inside and feel into the body to find the answers.

Later, working in underwater demolition involving deep-sea diving, Dan realised that he needed to learn to manage his emotions and heart rate and hey presto, “I’m back to the breath.”

His has been a deeply experiential journey with the breath. After he left school, working as an x-ray technician, the breath began “speaking to me”. After taking thousands of x-rays he began to

The reason for this approach is that we are each unique beings even as we share in our humanity. As such, there is no “one size fits all.”

“I’ve always been an exception. And I can’t be the only exception...standard instructions are useful but they don’t always work for me which means we need to find our own way...So rather than

to use and if there is one which does all three, then you’ve hit gold, says Dan. “I try to invent breathing techniques and exercises that feed all of those three things; that make me more conscious, improve my ability to relax and my ability to create energy. I see that as my job and my approach.”

2. Which breathing practice allows you to relax on demand, anytime, anywhere?

When learning from the inside out, we are learning from our own inner nature. Dan learned about the power of the ‘sigh of relief’ from the inside out. By remaining awake with the breath, aware of what it is doing and how it is fluctuating, Dan realised that, “We take a sigh of relief about every five minutes...[it’s] a spontaneous, uncontrolled, expansive inhale...and it feels good. Most people are not catching it but... if you’re awake in that moment and you experience it, you meditate on the details of that breath and then you copy it. You try to do it again exactly the way nature did it and now you’re coming into harmony with nature...We have to take our cue from nature. Do what nature is already doing.”

“What if I just do that breath on purpose? Can I change my state? And so I found a trigger...I had a way then from any other state of fear or chaos...I had a way to put myself into the most resourceful state.”

So, if after reading this article you feel inspired to take another step forward from whatever rung of the ladder you are on, Dan has some final words for you: “It’s said you need 10,000 hours to master anything, so start logging those hours.

Dan’s favourite invented formula is 10 + 10 + (10×2). In the morning, practice 10 minutes of your chosen exercise/technique. 10 minutes in the evening and ten times during the day for two minutes each. Those two minutes can be while you are in the car at a traffic light, or while you are chopping veg – integrate them into your life.

“Breath-work became a path for me for life. It’s a life path, a development,personalaspiritualpath.”

“When you learn to do that with the breath, then you can attach that to a muscle and when you release the breath, the muscle relaxes. Or you can attach it to a thought or a fear. When you release the breath, then the thought fades or the fear releases.”

When it comes to evolving through the experience and practice of breath-work, what you bring to the table to the teacher is as important as what s/he has laid out on the table for you to learn.

You must bring the inner resources of intention, committent and awareness. When you arrive with these, you do so in a state of“If‘readiness’:you’renot ready it doesn’t matter how good your teacher is. On the other hand, any teacher will help you...any book will have the answer, any technique will work...because of your readiness.”

Dan’s book ‘Just Breathe’ is a wonderful companion to your breathing journey as you can share in the invention and mastery of a man with unparalleled experience.

3. Which breathing practice energises you when you feel exhausted and Theseuninspired?arethepractices

When the sigh happens, it reflects a change in our state. It happens naturally and reflects a shift from pain to no pain, or fear to no fear. The sigh of relief mirrors this release of pain or fear.

At some point, you’ll graduate! Liberty, enlightenment...something’s going to happen.”“Your daily practice doesn’t have to be big but it must be continuous and integrated into your life.”

When it comes to answering the question of ‘which is the best breathing technique to practice’, Dan answers with a number of questions which require us to introspect, to practice and feel into the response of our bodies, and to decipher, accept and trust the answers our bodies so willingly offer us through sensation and subtle feeling:

When we combine the fruits of awareness of natural occurrences with the creativity of our intuition, the learning has the potential to explode out in all directions. From one tiny observation can grow a whole set of learning and abilities. When it comes to the example of the sigh of relief, Dan’s intuition (inner teacher) surfaced the question into his mind:

THE TABLE OF THE TEACHER

The teacher too, says Dan, is on the learning ladder and there is always “someone to teach, someone to learn from.”

TANTRAPOSITIVE

Neo-tantra practices.

THE ULTIMATE ECSTASY.

Only that which you have experienced is to be trusted. Osho

Sex and Awareness

One gloriously lazy Saturday morning recently, the handsome man in my life suggested we try a simple Neo-tantra practice, just to see what, if anything, would happen. The practice? I’d coax the flames of passion with sensuous touch while he breathed pleasure through the core of his body. A Neo-tantra classic. We approached the practice as an experiment, with no real idea where it might go, how it would unfold, or what it would reveal. It bears to mention, my guy, a man’s man if ever there was one, had a run-in with a very, let’s just call it esoteric, online Neo-tantra festival about two years ago that nearly put him off Neo-tantra forever. (He has since discovered he’s severely allergic to any occasion that includes a harmonium.) Given that, you can imagine my excitement at his request to explore a Neo-tantra practice together. Dreams really do come true.

First Step: Observe your body and sensations

The Way In

Now that you’re connected to your body during sex, begin to observe the activities of your mind – your thoughts, your fantasies, your imagination. Notice without judging. Just be aware. The more you’re aware, the more awareness takes over. Slowly, thoughts, fantasies and

In his many Neo-tantra talks and programs, Osho highlighted the beauty of the human body and the enlightenment that appears when sex is infused with awareness. Needless to say, this was a big hit among men and women liberating themselves from the sexually repressive 1950s, 1940s and 1930s.

If you’re anything like those men and women back in the 60s, enlightenment via sex sounds pretty great. I imagine you’re asking yourself – how do we infuse sex (and everything) with awareness? Osho outlined four steps. The way in.

The Indian mystic, Osho, first introduced Tantra to a ready, willing and able western world in the late 1960’s. He gave hundreds of talks, translating and illuminating several important Tantric writings. He invited some of the most brilliant minds in sex and humanistic psychology to lead Neo-tantra programs at his ashram in India that would eventually spread throughout the world. (Margot Anand, the teacher who first introduced me to the practice we were about to dive into, was one of those brilliant minds.)

The climax appeared all on its own – from somewhere completely new. The ultimate ecstasy. The four steps to enlightenment appear naturally when sex is infused with pure awareness. Mind-blowing, right? Pardon me, I’ve got to get back to the lab.

25

Third Step: Become aware of subtle emotions and moods

The breathing, particularly the natural gap that happens when the inhale is complete, just before the exhale begins, made his body more sensitive and the sensations more intense. He discovered a new erogenous zone he’d never felt before and the intensity seemed to expand from that spot.

This will blow your mind. My guy, enlightened as he is, wouldn’t know the four steps to awareness if they walked up and shook his hand. He’d never heard of them, and yet, they were innately a part of him (as they are for you) and appeared, out of nowhere, in the practice.

Emotionally, he opened as the experiment peaked, instead of pulling back into himself or disconnecting. The experience was one of opening.

Because he was focused on the breath, there was no space for thinking. Normally, his mind would be filled with images at the moment of climax. The only thing he was aware of as he plunged over the edge, was a

Fourth Step: The fourth step will happen all by itself

Once you’ve become aware of your body, thoughts and emotions, sex has reached its peak. There is nothing to be aware of, awareness is aware of itself. This is the ultimateNowecstasy.thatwe have the steps, let’s see what happened in the experiment.

Without realising it, we bring a certain emotional tone to everything we do, including sex. Emotions are subtle and easy to miss, we often believe they are a part of us – we believe they are the reason for having sex. That, or, we distance ourselves from sex, unaware of the mood lingering beneath the surface. Become aware of your emotions before, during and after sex.

Matt is full of free and relatively easy ways to enhance your sleep:

To understand what is NOT happening while you lie awake during the hours your body-mind is designed to sleep, we must first get to know the sleep cycles. This is known as the ‘architecture of sleep’. Sleep is not a one-dimensional experience: Awake is the initial step in the cycle – when we are alert through our senses and aware of our environment. Light Sleep comes next. Our eyes close and the senses start to go ‘out of operation’. Our muscles start to relax and get heavy. Our respiration slows down, and the heart rate along with it. Our body temperature drops. It’s easy to wake during this stage if something happens in our environment, as we are not entirely switched off from it. If all goes well throughout the ‘light’ phase, and our systems slow and relax, we may drop into the next phase which is Deep Sleep.

Regular timing - Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. Set a ‘to bed’ alarm just as you would set an ‘wake up’ alarm. Factor in time for getting ready, putting on pyjamas, washing your teeth, etc.

by Alison McEvoy

Dreaming is a kind of cognitive sorting arrangement for our brain, in order for it to sift through the events in our immediate experience, sorting things into our memory banks, learning from these experiences and generating creative solutions to the problems and issues on our minds.During the early night, we tend to stay for longer in the Deep Sleep phase. The body-system is prioritising physiological repair and restoration. During the later night, we spend longer in REM. On an ideal night, the body has enough time to go through four to five rounds of this cycle, spending time in repair, recovering, healing and re-energising. Amazingly, the body tends to tailor our sleep so that we spend more time in whatever phase gives us what we really need. An example of this is that the body may choose to spend more time in deep sleep after a day of intense exercise or workouts in order to recover and repair muscle, etc.

Sleep is my personal hot topic at the moment. Having left the world of maidenhood and entered the considerably more weighty world of motherhood, I’m learning, first hand, how the ‘worst self’ can emerge due to sleep deprivation.

superpowerplugintoyour

THE POWER OF SLEEP.

When we don’t get enough sleep, this repair and restore doesn’t happen. In short, as Matt puts it: “Sleep loss will leak into every nook and cranny of your body.”

Looking at sleep is almost like looking at an argument for the existence of an Intelligent Creator, or Divinity, behind it all. It is entirely involuntary what happens during sleep, it is all pre-programmed by Mother Nature into our bodies. It is pure intelligence, healing and good will.

I hope none of you reading this have to ever experience what Matt Walker (MW) describes so accurately as the “bad things that happen” when you don’t get enough sleep. From personal experience, and not out of a lab, it’s all true!

Moving on deeper into the sleep cycle, we come to the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase. In this phase it is our cognitive functions, the functions of the brain, which are restored and re-energised. Respiration slows even more but the heart rate goes up. Our ability to regulate our temperature shuts off and the body becomes immobile. This immobility protects us and prevents us from reacting in our sleep to the vivid dreams which happen during this phase.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

AWAKE ON THE DARK SIDE...

“Sleep is your superpower”(MW) To get enough sleep is to give the entire body, the cardiovascular system, the immune system, the reproductive system, the brain...a complete restore and reboot. To work on your sleep is to “Be reunited with the most powerful elixir of life. It’s your life support system. It is Mother Nature’s best effort yet at immortality.” (MW)

“[Sleep is] andintelligence,purehealinggoodwill.”

During deep sleep the body’s healing and restorative systems kick into gear. From deep inside, the body gets to work restoring itself. Extra blood flows to the muscles and a growth hormone is released so that muscles, and the body’s various other tissues, can regrow and repair from exercise/injury/daily wear and tear. Deep sleep is also known as Delta Sleep, as the brain waves change into long, slow, delta waves. During this phase the brain is able to flush out toxins. Due to this deep inner work going on, if you get woken during deep sleep you can feel groggy and disoriented.

sleepdiplomat.comdaveasprey.com

So(MW)make sleep your hot topic this autumn in preparation for the Season of Hibernation to come...

Bedroom association - If you are having trouble falling or going back to sleep, go to another room until you are sleepy. The brain needs to associate your bed with sleeping.

“Turnsays: your lights down after the sun goes down...For all of the cells in your body to do what they’re supposed to do, they need to know what time it is. That’s why every organ in your body has a clock... The master-clock is stored inside your brain and light controls it.”

Stay in the dark - Dim your lights as much as possible for an hour before you go to bed. This allows the hormone melatonin to be released by the pineal gland which will initiate your body into sleep.

Dave Asprey, the well-known sleep hacker,

Rethink your alarm - Do not hit the snooze button or use staggered alarms for waking up. There is considerable strain put on the cardiovascular system (the heart) when you are jolted awake by an alarm. It is a stressful event for the heart.

There is so much to discover on the topic of sleep and so many ways we can support and improve the quality of our sleep. This is the excellent news, given that sleep is such a powerful healer – one that we should not

Keep cool - Your body requires a drop in temperature to both fall asleep and stay asleep. So make sure your bedroom is not too hot. 18 degrees Celsius is an ideal temperature.

Time your coffee - A coffee drunk at 12pm is still a quarter in your body system by 12pm. Drink your coffee in the early morning and give it time to fully exit your system before your night’s sleep begins.

“Motherunderestimate:nature...hasnever had to face the challenge of...sleep deprivation. So she’s never developed a safety net. That’s why when you under-sleep things implode so quickly in the brain and the body....Sleep really is the tide that raises all other health boats.”

Short cycles, long cycles, missing cycles, painful cycles, these will all give the acupuncturist clues to any imbalances in the person and the acupuncturist will aim to bring the cycle back into balance. The woman’s cycle should be shortened when too long and lengthened when too short. They should transition from one stage of the cycle to the next without difficulties or significant pain.

Acupuncture is the primary tool of the acupuncturist, however they will also give lifestyle and diet advice and may consider other therapies such as cupping, massage and moxibustion. Many acupuncturists are also trained herbalists. Herbs are used to great effect in the treatment of Acupuncture, infertility.like any medicine, is best taken as a course of treatment. While there is some benefit in getting even a single treatment, best practice would recommend a three-month course for women - encompassing three menstrual cycles. This is the minimum time needed to have an impact on the cycle. A similar time frame for men is advised as it takes 64 days to form semen. In cases where the acupuncturist is supporting ART the same treatment length guidelines still hold. “Awareness is like the sun. When it shines on things, they are transformed”

According to systems scientist Peter Senge, “most of the problems faced by humankind concern our inability to grasp and manage the increasingly complex systems of our world.” To do this he advocates practising systems thinking.

Senge, this approach is “a language for describing and understanding the forces and interrelationships that shape the behaviour of systems.” This awareness helps us to find appropriate leverage points for influencing change, and act more in tune with the natural processes of the natural world.

Our awareness of natural systems, complexity and how to work with, rather than against, nature is low and we struggle to imagine what a good life for all within the ecological limits of the planet could be.

We now find ourselves in the midst of a convergence of environmental, economic and socio-political disruptions that we are woefully ill-prepared to deal with. In this era of simplification and

If you follow the world’s news, browse the web, or if you have even looked out the window, you may have noticed something is going on. In the face of social, political and economic upheaval, religious violence, racial bloodshed, climate change and a devastating global healthcare crisis – civilisation is in a state of massive upheaval.Civilisation is at an evolutionary crossroads wherein unsustainable human behaviour is precipitating in the planet’s 6th mass extinction event. Five times in Earth’s history, life was thriving when some event precipitated a wave of extinction, eliminating 70 to 90 percent of all plant and animal species. The last mass extinction event, 66 million years ago, noted for wiping out the dinosaurs, was apparently due to a massive asteroid impact in Mexico that upended the global web ofSciencelife. has been trying to inform the public for over 15 years that human behaviour has undermined the web of life and that our activity has precipitated the beginning of the planet’s 6th extinction event. Today’s severe environmental imbalance is, in large part, attributable to the cultural consequences of Darwinian evolution theory. Since the 1900s, neoDarwinian theory (the modern version of the theory that incorporates the science of genetics), has enculturated the public with a belief that survival is based on a competition for fitness in the ‘struggle for life’ and that we are ‘victims’ of our genes in controlling the fate of our lives.

HEAVEN ON EARTH.

by Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D.

Darwinian theory based on ‘survival

of the fittest’, has offered scientific legitimacy to the use of power, greed and violence in exercising that ‘fitness’. However, new insights from the Human Genome Project, the new science of epigenetic and quantum physics, have completely challenged the basic tenets of DarwinianConventionaltheory. science has considered the gene-containing nucleus as the cell’s ‘brain’, however new research points to the cell membrane, the cell’s skin, as the information processor that controls the fate of the cell. Molecular switches built into the membrane translate environmental information into survival-driven cell behaviour. These switches represent the basic physical units of perception, the building blocks of consciousness. Epigenetics recognises that the environment, and more importantly, our perception of the environment, controls genetic activity and behaviour and thus shifts the focus of evolutionary theory to the role of our nervous systems and consciousness in shaping our life experiences.Consequently, the Darwinian notion of the ‘survival of the fittest’ gives way to a more scientific and profoundly more positive theory of evolution that emphasises the role of cooperation, interaction and mutual dependence among all life forms. In the words of evolution scientist Lynn Margulis, “Life did not take over the globe by combat, but by networking.”Today’sworld crises are precipitating a major evolutionary upheaval that will profoundly alter the fate of human civilisation. The chaos produced by global crises, which are symptoms of our unsustainability, is destabilising the structure of civilisation and its institutions.Sinceour current way of life is responsible for our life-threatening predicament, the only way to survive is to revise conventional behaviour in order to build a better world on a new, sustainable foundation. Unfortunately, the media continuously focus on the scary news of the breakdown of our civilisation and ignore the fact that there is also an emerging new order of life – a new civilisation is evolving.

Evolution – By The People, or The Planet

The revised knowledge provided by quantum biophysics and epigenetics affirms our role as creators and with this awareness, we can usher in a new version of civilisation resembling a love-filled honeymoon. We are moving out of a world

life to the failing system, or, let go and participate in the evolution of a more sustainableThosehumanity.infearofcollapse are desperately holding on to the current system, live lives of stress, responsible for up to 90% of the planet’s health crisis. Rather than living in fear, those that invest their lives in creating a more sustainable culture will be rewarded with health and vitality. It’s a simple fact: we must either change our voracious behaviour or perish in extinction. New insights, understanding and visions offered by human ‘imaginal cells’, cultural creatives from every field of human endeavor are pointing the ways to reorganise human civilisation so we may thrive into the future.

By revising our role in life, we can actively participate in empowering civilisation to transition into a world based in Love and Harmony. In the process, we must honour and extend the wonderful supportive behaviours that have historically enhanced civilisation, such as a focus on family and community health and wellbeing, because the collective amplitude of a large community sharing the same consciousness can profoundly change the world. Through conscious evolution, we will all be able to experience Heaven on Earth!

“either hold on for dear life to the failing system, or, let go and participate in the evolution of a more humanity.”sustainable

When caterpillars run out of food, they encase themselves in a cocoon within which former life-sustaining functions cease. The caterpillar’s cellular community breaks down, forming a soup of ‘unemployed’ cells. However, specialised imaginal cells within the soup offer the community a new vision of an advanced version of their civilisation…the creation of a butterfly, an organism that has the lightest touch on the environment. During metamorphosis, the cellular community in the cocoon is in a state of chaos as the caterpillar civilisation is breaking down, while simultaneously, the structure of the butterfly is emerging.

in which we perceive ourselves to be ‘victims’ of life and entering a new sciencebased reality wherein we actively exercise our powers as conscious ‘creators’.

are voracious organisms that have a heavy footprint on their environment. After Monarch caterpillars hatch from eggs laid on their favourite food plant, milkweed, they will eat all leaves off the plant. The caterpillar’s body encompasses a community of millions of cells. Each of its sentient cells, the equivalent of a miniature human, is employed in carrying out the caterpillar’s life functions. Muscle cells are responsible for the organism’s movements, gut cells harvest and digest food, while still other cells provide respiration, excretion and communication, among other system functions.

The current environmentallydestructive ‘caterpillar’ version of civilisation must transform into a ‘new’ sustainable organism…Humanity. The looming fall of current civilisation is a necessity; we simply cannot build a future for humans to thrive on the unsustainable foundation supporting today’s world. Will human civilisation survive its ‘metamorphosis’? At the moment, human civilisation is balanced on the knife-edge of extinction or conscious evolution. Our uncertain future is dependent on the actions we engage in today.

brucelipton.com

As one version of civilisation ends, a new one begins. Evolution does not throw out the baby with the bath water, it is a process of carrying forward civilisation’s good traits while revising behaviours that are not beneficial. Civilisation is actively reviewing the good and the bad aspects of human history in order to redefine and evolve humanity and its relationship with Mother Nature. Movements such as Me Too, Black Lives Matter, and Environmental Green are bringing to light civilisation’s current dysfunctions.

In this analogy, human civilisation, expressing the voracious appetite of a caterpillar, has been destroying its environment. As civilisation’s organisation is falling apart, the human equivalent of imaginal cells is offering the public opportunities to create a more sustainable version of civilisation, one with a smaller footprint on the environment. Citizens experiencing the current planetary chaos have two choices: either hold on for dear

The human has never experienced the current physical shifts within their body. They do not have a reference point. It requires patience, surrender, trust, and most importantly – being the observer.

They begin to trust the now moment as the only moment that needs attention. The human will find themselves in a more surrendered state, not trying to control or create a desired outcome. They will detach from all experiences. Detachment does not mean they do not feel or desire experiences or outcomes. Detachment means the human no longer associates themselves as the experience or outcome, but instead, simply experiences each now.

There are many ways the human will experience their multidimensionality. We will list a few below.

As the human practices presence, they will begin to experience neutrality. Neutrality is another aspect of becoming multidimensional. Humanity is currently navigating this miraculous and courageous physical evolution in Consciousness. The above examples are just a few of many experiences the human will have as they step into their multidimensionality. These don’t happen overnight. It takes baby steps and requires the human to have compassion and patience as they learn how to become multidimensional. We have been waiting thousands of years for this moment. You have been waiting thousands of years to be able to finally experience this physical shift in consciousness within your human form. There are light codes within your DNA that will activate and are activating, allowing you to step into the multidimensional human. It is no mistake that you are reading these words. You are remembering why you are here in the human form. You have chosen to experience the physical shift in consciousness within a dense physical form. You are doing this courageously and exactly how you designed it to be. I have been sitting staring at a blank page because I am aware of all the things that surround it. The soft hum of the laptop fan, the footsteps pattering on the pavement below. My sunglasses resting on my head. They form a distraction from what is inside me – what I am to write. I can read books and interview some people, but I will never be able to fully comprehend what it is like to be in certain situations due to nothing more than circumstance. As an army brat, I learnt the importance of adapting to certain situations quickly, which has helped me develop myself in London as a freelancer, where I cater to a range of clients’ needs because I am used to moulding myself to what people need me to be.

As humans, we have the ability to be so much more aware of everything including what we already have in our lives. We are marketed with the idea that something more will make us happy, but we are all unique in our own way. What somebody else has or does is so unimportant in the face of what truly drives you, when you really think about it. We are told to chase an ideal which perpetuates the cycle of human inadequacy. We owe it to ourselves to centre ourselves by letting the distractions fall to the sidelines making authenticity be the centrepiece. The world is changing and some people lose hope. I do not! In fact I see a lot of positive changes happening in the world of gardening, growing and food production. Some of these changes are not ‘in the news’ and do not appear in statistics yet, but are significant and will have a long-term effect. Take polytunnels for example. There is hardly a village, town or city that does

(Friedrich Albert Fallou, 1862)

not sprout these very useful additions to any garden.Hundreds and thousands of gardeners and growers are very aware of the benefits of growing food for the family. Many are new to growing and the hunger for knowledge and know-how is huge.

much attention as the soil. Truly it is the soil which makes the world a friendly environment for mankind. It is the soil which nourishes and provides for the whole of nature; the whole of creation depends upon the soil which is the ultimate foundation of our existence.”

The soil doesn’t only supply the major macronutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), in big quantities, but also calcium, magnesium and sulphur. And in relatively small amounts, the soil supplies iron, manganese, boron, molybdenum, copper, zinc, chlorine and cobalt, the so-called micronutrients. Therefore, soils that provide a healthy, nutrient-rich growth medium for plants will result in plant tissues that contain most of the elements required for human life when the plants are consumed.

Soil is the foundation of nutrition

zones. The uppermost layer in a garden consists of a mulch cover; then comes the decomposition zone, about 5cm deep, where earthworms, millipedes, woodlice and other specialised microorganisms start the decomposition process. Next comes the humus layer, 20-30cm deep, where different microorganisms, bacteria, algae and fungi construct building blocks of life from the ingredients of the decomposition layer and create food for the root systems of the plants.

If we grow our own food in our own garden we have the huge advantage of growing the most nutritious, the most nutrient-dense food. There are no food miles, we do not need artificial chemical fertilisers, we do not need weed killer and pesticides; all we need is the best soil we can get and if our soil is poor for starters we can remedy that in one season with compost and/or manure. By growing food from seeds we can also use varieties best suited to our local conditions and microclimate and, even better, save seeds.

The microcosm under our feet Garden soil resembles a city organised down to the smallest detail, a city in which millions of inhabitants are at work day and night. The teamwork takes place in three well-organised

My anecdotal research through social media shows that gardeners are as enthusiastic and resourceful when it comes to home composting as they are in using polytunnels of all sizes to produce healthy and tasty food.

The fact sheet (published 2015 during International Year of the Soil) also states that over two billion people suffer from micronutrient deficiencies because of soil degradation.TheOrganic Consumers Association cites several studies with similar findings: A Kushi Institute analysis of nutrient data from 1975 to 1997 found that average calcium levels in 12 fresh vegetables dropped 27%; iron levels 37%; vitamin A

To understand soil is to be aware of how everything affects and is affected by it. We are all part of the soil ecosystem. Soil is not just dirt or the loose surface that covers most land. Soil provides the structure for plants to grow and anchor; it is also their source for water and nutrients. Soil contains minerals, organic matter and a rich biodiversity.

Soil degradation leads to micronutrient deficiencies

“Cultivating soil and encouraging plants to grow in harmony with nature’s wondrous system has been an honored avocation throughout history”, writes Bill Wolf in his foreword to ‘The Soul of Soil’ in 1999. This avocation has now become the main occupation for many farmers, growers and gardeners, because cultivating soil and keeping soil fertile to grow nutritious food single-handedly is the best contribution anybody can make to combat climate change and its consequences.

“Toneantog.comunderstand soil is to be aware of how everything affects and is affected by it.”

Huge advantages of growing your own food

Because intensive agriculture and production has put a strain on our soils, we need a shift towards practices that bring life back to our soils. And there are solutions everywhere, like regenerative farming, which is being taken up by a whole generation of young Irish farmers and growers.Recent study showed that food grown on regenerative farms contained on average more magnesium, calcium, potassium and zinc and more vitamins (including B1, B 12, C, E and K) than food produced on conventional farms.

We can all compost So, back to our gardens and polytunnels and how we can regenerate and keep our soil fertile and alive. The answer is simple: Recycling nutrients by composting!Compost, like humus, is made of decomposed organic material. Humus is created through the natural decay of plant materials in the soil’s top layer. Composting is recycling material by people from leftover plant and food waste and other natural waste materials.

“We really should be orienting agriculture towards ensuring that nutrient levels are as high and as balanced as they can be in plants (…), because that ultimately has an effect on human health.” (Anne Bikle and David R. Montgomery, The Hidden Half of Nature).

Regenerative Farming can help create healthy soil

levels 21%; and vitamin C levels 30%. A similar study of British nutrient data from 1930 to 1980, published in the British Food Journal, found that in 20 vegetables the average calcium content had declined 19%; iron 22%; and potassium 14%.

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER.

SHORT AND SWEET

Often we behave, react, think and see the world through the lens of the part that needs to be healed. The course that Emma teaches has an emphasis on identifying the emotional root cause of stress – when in your life this is related to and who or what event triggered it. These are the parts that students then balance so they can be healed and integrate back fully into the present –this, Emma says, is when the transformation occurs.

Bio-Individuality is the main gate towards someone’s inner intelligence and power. Like with everything else in life when there are so many distractions around, it’s hard to find the right way towards your inner self without the right guidance.

We recently caught up with Emma Henry, a Belfast-based Kinesiologist practitioner and EMK teacher. Emma unpacked what Kinesiology is and its many benefits that help people move through the challenges they are facing. She describes herself as a detective of the soul – using muscle testing to go into the body to find the root cause of stress. Emma is the only certified teacher in the UK and Ireland. The modality that Emma specialises in is EMK – Emotional and Metaphysical Kinesiology, which was developed in Melbourne, Australia by Denise Robinson.

Some of the elements are obvious and clear while some of them are hidden and they take hard work to find them. When you connect with your client based on their own needs and bioindividual traits, you can devise a formula that creates wonderful results. Bio-Individuality applies very successfully when it comes to food, ways to exercise, ways to deal with stress and pleasure, sleeping patterns or spiritual practices. Given that, it’s strange that few foods in fact naturally contain Vitamin D, so we need to be conscious about our intake. For most people the best way to take Vitamin D is through a supplement, and indeed for babies it is recommended that they take a supplement for the entire first year of their life.

When scientists have put Vitamin D under the microscope, so to speak,

they have found that it’s very important indeed. It is a huge helper to the body, helping to control infections and reduce inflammation in the body when it occurs.

Discover...Vitamin D

Selenium is found in our food and refers to an essential component of certain enzymes and proteins aka selenoproteins. It is a micronutrient, small but essential, and the body only actually needs a small amount of it for its functions to be carried out.

Selenoproteins have lots of jobs throughout the body. They are stored in the muscles but the highest concentration of them is stored in the thyroid, most likely for convenience as they provide a lot of assistance with thyroid function. Just like we store our spices close to the hob, so the body likes to have its necessities within easy reach!

The highest sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, seafood and meat. For vegetarians and vegans, a supplement could be the way to go.

Vitamin D is both a nutrient we get from food and a hormone which our body makes. It has a special relationship with calcium as it helps the body absorb and retain calcium and phosphorous – both essential for bone-building.

Many tests have been done that have found that people with higher levels of selenium have less tendency towards various illnesses related to both the heart and mental decline in old age. Enough said, get on the case of yours methinks!

Selenoproteins are involved in reproduction, in helping us metabolise the hormones released by the thyroid and they also help to make our DNA – a trace but vital ingredient that helps protect against cell damage and infections.

Know Your Nutrients

SELENIUM AND VITAMIN D. by Alison McEvoy

Your body can produce Vitamin D in the presence of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, but those of us with darker skin won’t benefit as much from sun exposure as the dark pigment of the skin acts as a shade, reducing Vitamin D production.

There is just so much to learn when it comes to our body’s interaction with and dependency on the world of vitamins, minerals, micronutrients and the like. We realise that our kitchen has the potential to be a medicinal space, with our cupboards being daily, natural, medicine cabinets!

“How Nature provides for me inspires me to provide back for Nature and take care of it. ”

51

Vitamin D has not revealed the entire gamut of her powers to science just yet. Scientists have found that there are receptors in many of the body’s organs and tissues which seek Vitamin D, and so it potentially has a much wider impact and support range than we are currently aware of.

Learning about anatomy and physiology was a wonder to me back in my yoga teacher training days. It has been invaluable to me to know about my organs, what they do, how they interact, support and rely on one another. Knowing what food agrees and disagrees with each organ/tissue was another huge leap in self-understanding.Gettingintothe finer details of what the various vitamins and minerals do for us is a frontier I would like to hike over. It gives me great joy to learn ever more about how connected my body is to Nature and the Earth. How Nature provides for me inspires me to provide back for Nature and take care of it.

Just for today, I will be grateful.

“It changed my personality as well…I had been very anxious before. Reiki gave me a purpose and drive that I didn’t have before…I wasn’t happy and this lifted a blind and allowed me to see things differently. It’s like I’m a completely different person.”

Part of the beauty of Reiki is that, “anyone can train to be attuned to Reiki. You don’t have to have a gift, just an open mind. It’s something we are born with, but with conditioning, we lose the ability. It’s something literally anyone can do.”

Marie Creighton are committee members of Reiki Federation Ireland (RFI), with over twenty years’ experience between them supporting the aims of the RFI – namely, to be a “Strong clear voice for Reiki providing standards and guidelines for Reiki practice.”Anne

A co-worker began practicing Reiki on Gillian on their tea break. As soon as the opportunity arose for Gillian to take a career break, “one of the first things I did was to find a teacher. In 2007 I found Angela Gorman, one of the founders of the Reiki “I’mFederation.”abletomanage the pain myself now…I was in agony for a long time. Medical intervention never worked for me. A combination of osteopathy and Reiki is what works.”Notonly did Reiki change Gillian’s relationship to her pain, it changed her life inside and out.

This year sees the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the first Reiki School in Japan, by Master Usui in 1922. To celebrate, the RFI and their members will be having a big day out in Wicklow including Reiki shares, sound baths and a labyrinth walk.

100 YEARS OF REIKI

A VOICE FOR REIKI IN THE COMMUNITY

The ‘Universal Energy’ which is Reiki, turned Gillian McNamara’s life around. “I ended up having three whiplash injuries in the space of 18 months… it was the universe trying to tell me to change course and I wasn’t listening.”

The RFI also has a presence in the Sister Sheds – women’s gatherings around Dublin to provide much-needed support and camaraderie for women. Offering Reiki to the Bluebell Sister Shed, they found many of the women were simply “blown away” by the experience.

Universal energy (Reiki) is available to all who open their heart and being purely to it. Reiki practitioners attune to this energy, call it in and run the energy to the receiver. From there, the energy’s intelligence itself kicks in and it interacts with the body and being of the receiver in a delicate yet powerful dance of healing.

In the autumn of 2014, Matt chanced upon a site at the edge of Goleen – a ‘38-acre coastal farm with ruin’. A perfect location for an eco-campsite alongside a learning, wellbeing and activity centre! This would give himself and Melanie the possibility of using their complimentary skill sets and make a living from them, while doing something positive for the local community, environment and biodiversity.

2016. That year, the farm was converted to organics, producing vegetables, Connemara ponies and traditional Irish sport horses, while in the winter an eightacre native woodland was established. At least 10,000 native trees have been planted to date. The following years saw Matt design and build the prototype Eco-cabin in Melanie’s stunning Harbour Garden, and the first phases of their accommodation offerings. However, they found themselves waiting endlessly on grant schemes to open in order to develop their vision. Then, by chance, Dara Connolly - now CEO of Common Purpose Ireland - came to stay with his family. Dara was hugely impressed with the site and the vision. He and his partner Karen Walshe (Artistic Director of the Saint Patrick’s Festival) offered to help find new investors as well as investing themselves. Dara put Matt in touch with serial Eco Entrepreneur Marc Rafferty who came on board as an investor and to help raise finance. Matt was aware of the Employment Investment Incentive Scheme (EIIS) and once they had obtained approval from Fáilte Ireland, Marc and Matt raised almost €500k through their contacts. EIIS worked well for them as a form of crowdfunding, with over 35 investors including a core group who purchased a small equity stake and want to be part of the project and its vision. Development commenced in January 2022. The development was paused in July as two new Eco-Cabins, the first Geodome and the campsite could open with temporary facilities. It will recommence at the end of August to enable the construction of the facilities building and the beautiful Barrel Top that will be the social and workshop space. Matt and Melanie purchase from local and sustainable sources as much as possible; from the Native Irish Douglas Fir used in the Barrel Top post and beam, to the Irishmade, very comfortable Respa mattresses used throughout their accommodation units.

The concept was to place guests in ‘4-star’, yet sustainable, accommodation set in this Natura 2000 (SAC) Special Area of Conservation. Then, to subtly send messages about the importance of biodiversity and the oceans to guests, and provide them with organically grown, farm-to-fork food. This approach would be more likely to bring about behavioural change than ‘preaching’ in village halls.

I could see a guy in the corner, a young guy, and he was lifting up his top and looking at his abs in the mirror in between his sets and all of a sudden there was an understanding that the Beingness had woken up in me in this moment and that this other person was also me. But that character was still dreaming so he was still stuck in the dream. The dream of being a young guy looking at his abs in the gym. I felt this absolute sense of compassion for everything. Every person that I looked at was me. I just knew at that moment that everyone was just this one Being-ness. The consciousness that I had woken up in me was also the consciousness in that guy and all the other people, the people clanking weights around the gym, but they were still asleep, they were still dream characters, they were still caught up in the dream…

similar to a lucid dream. That’s the only way I can describe it. It felt like a lucid dream here in this reality. So this “Supreme Being” (or the consciousness system or the Universe or whatever you want to call it), God, in that moment of me looking and realizing that everything was going on inside of me, in that moment, it triggered

something in that Being to wake up and realize that it was dreaming. There was a rush of reality that came in and in that moment there was a realization that I was this greater consciousness, this Being, this Universe and it knew that it had been dreaming itself into this character Gareth and all of it was fictional, all of it was this ongoing dream... this guy with all his problems and his worries and his anxieties and fears about work and money, etc.

I was in the gym one morning. I used to go every day around 7am. It was a beautiful morning, the sun was shining through the windows and there was loud music playing. The place wasn’t very busy and for a split second I stood there and started to ponder. I could hear all the weights clanking and I could hear the loud music and the sound of the people working out and something just made me stop. In that moment something clicked with me that everything I could see and hear, all the noises, the sun shining through the windows, the music, etc., I wasn’t experiencing it outside of me, I was experiencing it inside of me. So everything I was seeing that was going on outside of me was inside of me. It was inside my head or my brain and the noises were inside of me and all of a sudden, once I said that to myself, I heard this noise. It sounded kind of like fabric ripping or velcro, and then this whoosh of reality came in… What happened in the gym was

There was a realization that none of it was important any longer. So it just looked around for a while taking it all in and started to take it all in that this was a dream…It started to notice that everything it put his attention on was also it; the walls, the weights, they were the Supreme Being as well. So this God Force had woken up in this person and realized that it was the Self. Then it took notice that everything else was also it. Professor Nolan is the founder of this research centre where scientists have spent 20 years studying the role of nutrition for the eye.Professor Nolan was approached by Robert Kuchling, CEO of ebiga VISION GmbH, to test the benefits of VitroCap ® N, a revolutionary world’s first natural formula that supports the health of the vitreous. Professor Nolan had a personal interest in the supplement after experiencing floaters himself after a neardrowning experience. Floaters can occur at any age, becoming more common with overuse of screens and smart phones.

This wonderful transparent spherical structure holds the elements of the eye exquisitely together. It contributes to optical transparency, light refraction, and infuses the eye with life-giving nutrients. Previously thought to be a closed system, which slowly breaks down and ‘liquifies’ as we age, new research into a world’s first natural supplement, VitroCap ® N, suggestLikeotherwise.everything in life, the vitreous is subject to the ageing process.

Conventional treatments adopt a waitand-see approach, advising floaters will resolve with time, but they don’t, and are a warning sign that the vitreous is under attack.‘Floaters’ can be so debilitating that people resort to extreme medical interventions, such as pars plana vitrectomy and nd:YAG laser vitreolysis, that can be risky.

Comprising of a unique blend of watersoluble antioxidative and antiglycation micronutrients, VitroCap ® N closely mimics the micronutrients within the vitreous of the eye. The supplement comprises of a special blend of L-Lysine, Vitamin C, grape seed extract, Zinc, and bitter orange extract,

The first signs of vitreous degeneration are ‘Floaters’ alarming shadow-like floating strands that disrupt our field of vision. Largely ignored by ophthalmologists, floaters are one of the first signs of atrophy within the eye.

So, it is with great excitement we’re now sharing with you recent results of a study led by Professor John Nolan PhD and his team at The Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (NRCI) at the South East Technological University, Waterford.

The findings of this study are far-reaching. Not only do they indicate marked improvements from ‘floaters’ and vision thanks to VitroCap ® N, they also inform further research and give hope in preventing or slowing down the progression of chronic diseases of the eye, such as cataracts, glaucoma and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which are all caused by oxidative stress. The vitreous body is the biggest reservoir of antioxidative capacity within the eye.

targeted nutritional intervention via supplementation for patients suffering from vitreous floaters. Comprising of 61 patients with symptomatic vitreous floaters, they were randomised to trial VitroCap ® N daily or a placebo for six months. The results were astonishing! The study shows that 67% of the active group experienced a marked improvement after six months, with a significant decrease in vitreous opacity areas and improvement in photopic functional contrast sensitivity.

Whether this eclipse season is more significant for you, or whether you are just a super sensitive moon-babe, here are a few ways you can work with the final eclipse season of this year.

The last two eclipse dates we have this year happen on the - New Moon in Scorpio on October 25th - Full Moon in Taurus on November 8th

2 - This eclipse season is occurring in what is called ‘Fixed Signs’. Fixed means exactly how it sounds - enduring, sustaining, but also difficult to budge. Notice that patterns you might be releasing are not ones that want to give up easily. They might have long-standing momentum, so be gentle and kind with yourself.

“Take this time to align with your own internal compass.”

As we enter the autumn of 2022, I’d like to focus on the last eclipse season of this year. Eclipse season highlights the new moon and full moon which the karmic nodes make contact with. These two moons can be like ‘wild cards’ of the month. Eclipses have a way of stirring up patterns from the past, but they can also be an opportunity to tie up any karmic loose ends.

4 - The final eclipse of this year on November 8th has the energy of profound change. If you do the work leading up to this point, use today to stamp home the change you’re interested in seeing in your life. Do some type of ritual that helps release what you no longer need, and invite new energy into your world.

1 - In the lead up to the end of October, pay attention to any recurring themes that are calling your attention. Are there patterns that keep appearing that are asking you to bring awareness to them? These patterns might be surfacing more now so that they can be released.

and get your priorities straight, as best as you can.

THE WILD CARD SEASON.

While eclipses are something that the world at large can feel, they aren’t necessarily significant for everyone. For the most part, the eclipse would have to be highlighting a specific part of your own birth chart to be felt on a personal level. In addition, people who are usually more sensitive to the phases of the moon can often feel major shifts during eclipse season.

by Rachelle Hicks

3 - The eclipse on October 25th has more of a scattered energy. It’s like we’re being asked, on this day, to watch our attention and to hone our focus. However, this task is not easy. Practice good mental hygiene

5 - Remember the point about eclipse days being like ‘wild cards’. We can only do our best to set our intentions, but we are also being asked to go with whatever happens. Take this time to align with your own internal compass.

Mark Twain’s “Checking Into Heaven” has been described as “one of his finest performances since his death” by critics and viewers. After talking about his colorful lifetime in the 1800’s, Mark Twain rolls into a hilarious and insightful description of trying to get into heaven upon his death in 1910. Twain is channeled by world-renowned author and lecturer Geoffrey Hoppe, who actually worked with Twain for a short time in his past lifetime at the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in the Old West.
