HONORARY EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBERS Mr. G.K. Rathinam Palani Tk, Dindugul Dist, Tamil Nadu Dr. J Tamizhkumaran

Our industry is going through a massive slump currently. The price of day old chick has fallen down to INR 8-10 and the chicken is selling at a measly INR 45-50/kg. The table egg is selling at INR 5-6 in the market per piece, a loss of Re 0.75-1 per egg to the farmer. None of these are enough to cover the basic cost of production in terms of feed and medication. To recover the labour cost and return on investment is a far cry. Who are we to blame? Rising prices of feed ingredients? Lack of infrastructure facilities like warehousing and cold chain management? Losing out on economies of scale? Biosecurity? Undefined standards? Imported chicken legs? All and None. Which one of these factors is new for which we do not have a remedy. The problem lies with implementation. The cost of feed ingredients is for the government to control but the efforts on our part have been lacking as well. The lack of awareness, constant refusal to upgrade, and failure of automatic caging systems have multiplied the miseries of the farmer. What have been our efforts to control overproduction? Slumps like this are not a new phenomenon for our industry but what have we done to learn from our past mistakes. To survive one has to adapt, the best way to evolve for a species is always to learn and vary itself according to the surroundings thatit is exposed to. Success can always be measured by one's ability to change with the change. Our industry needs to do the same. We need to create a balance between input and output, improve infrastructure, bring in further economies of scale and most importantly adapt to the changes constantly. What you learnt yesterday would not necessarily be enough today! It may rightly be concluded that to be in the race, you must learn every day, but more importantly, you must unlearn every day. Adaptation is definitely the key to survival.

Zoetis engages on the “Continuum of care” strategy to support the transition towards responsible use of antibiotics in India What made Zoetis decide to voluntary withdraw the product despite no Indian regulatory order on the same? Zoetis decision to voluntarily withdraw growth promotion indications from the labelling of medically impor tant antibiotic products in the portfolio is standing good on our resolve to make medically important antibiotics products to be approved exclusively for therapeutic purposes. Our step is a part of our commitment to join with veterinarian and livestock farmer's customer s in helping to combat antimicrobial resistance. On the same front, we will work with national regulator y authorities in various countries, including India to engage on actions towards responsible use of a n t i b i o t i c s i n re s p e c t w i t h l o c a l regulatory interpretation and oversight. Doesn't using such drugs as Tylosin or Lincomycin in poultry contribute to drug resistance and pose a public health risk to people ? We are at a point, especially in developing countries like India, where producers will have to meet the increasing demand. With few alternatives today for treating lifethreatening bacterial infections in animals, optimal use of antibiotics is essential to animal health and, in turn, to their welfare. When antibiotic products are used properly and responsibly according to their approved indications - and under the super vision of a veterinary professional -- they can help protect animal and human health, assure the safety of the food supply and help reduce the risk of resistance. Is Zoetis doing anything to ensure that such products are more closely regulated ? Zoetis continues to engage with regulatory authorities around the world to implement appropriate regulations to s u p p o r t t h e r e s p o n s i b l e u s e of 10

antibiotics. Our veterinarians and field representatives support our customers by sharing knowledge on responsible use of our antibiotic medicines and animal health and husbandry protocols that can help prevent common diseases. For an instance, Zoetis is engaging in a collaborative effort with a major food c h a i n c o m pa n y t o t r a i n p o u l t r y producers in India about the responsible use of antibiotics on farms. With the decision coming, is there any reason behind the timing ? We believe now is the right time for Zoetis to voluntarily withdraw growth promotion indications from the labelling of medically impor tant antibiotic products in our portfolio as we are engaging all stakeholders in this process, from regulatory bodies, to veterinarians and producers. Since this is about changing practices on the ground, it cannot happen overnight if you are not able to provide the technical support to help make that change. With our Indian team, we believe that we are now in a good position to organize and support our customers through this transition as of June 2020 and therefore the decision. How does Zoetis India plan to assist its customers during the withdrawal phase ? Like all medicines, antibiotics should choose the most appropriate antibiotic, and ensure the animal owner is correctly instructed on its use: the correct dose, correct route and correct length of treatment. With this understanding, Zoetis India is committed to actively consider the animal health needs of our customers, and will provide them with the knowledge, tools and solutions to make changes that may be needed. With the products withdrawn, what are there other products that will ensure customer needs are duly met ? We have withdrawn the products, but

other competitor companies have similar products still available in the market. Where do you see the future of animal heath evolving into, to meet the challenges of increasing demand and antimicrobial resistance ? Healthcare trends are moving towards early identification/prediction, a preventative/proactive approach and medicines used responsibly to treat. The future of animal health will depend on integrating many different solutions and technologies to help livestock farmers and veterinarians make early and accurate decisions, prevent and detect disease, and deliver targeted, effective treatment. At Zoetis, we are focused on bringing more integrated solutions to our customers across this continuum of care- Predict, Prevent, Detect and Treat. The future can be gauged as increasingly our customers want solutions across the full continuum of care to help their animals return to health. Our innovations predict illness, prevent it, detect it and treat it effectively with the right medicine, at the right time, at the right dose, for the right duration of time. As an example, the recent adoption from key poultry integrators of more Biodevice and automation machines, aiming at preventing diseases at early stage in birds and allowing a more sustainable approach to biosecurity and health management provide a glimpse of future of animal health. What is Zoetis India growth strategy and what are the expansion plans currently in place ? We will focus on our poultry biologicals & disinfectants' portfolio to provide enhanced biosecurity to poultry farms. We will strengthen Bursaplex, immunocomplex vaccine for commercial broilers. We will expand our innovative solutions for hatcheries, Embrex Biodevice. Poultry Planner | Vol. 21 | No.12 | December - 2019

Farmgate Price < INR 50/kg, Potatoes= INR 40/kg Where are we heading? Last week the Day-old chick prices tumbled down below INR 8 and the farm gate price to a measly INR 45/kg compared to INR 120/kg this Diwali. Is this for real? Extreme fluctuations in the markets have become second nature to poultry industry in India.Time and again the poultry farmers have been facing unprecedented losses. Some of the reasons for these losses can be attributed to various reasons such as high cost of feed production, refusal to u p g r a d a t i o n , n o n - e x i s te n t economies of scale and overexpansion. There are n number of factors comprising Cost of production in poultry industry such as Bird vaccines, medicines, etc but cost of its feed u n d o u b te d l y d o m i n a te s a l l b y contributing up to 70% of it. That is the m a i n re a s o n o n e c a n i d e n t i f y contributing to continuous decrease in profit margin of the farmers in 2019. In first quarter of this year, as much increase as 50% could be found in price of Maize and Soyabean which is a key feed ingredient. Maize prices shot up by 21% resulting poultry farmers to pay more than INR2,000 a quintal, 500 more as compared to last year. Same is the case with Soyabean, its prices increased by 16% making it almost INR 4000 a quintal. Following usual course, this price increase burden would normally be shifted to consumer end but when costumers follow value-based purchase instead of volume based, there is not much option left with producers other than to bear than loses themselves. Another reason for increased cost of 12

production is outdated infrastructure. There are mainly two reasons for the same. India is a country with over 830 million people living in rural areas, more than 20% of them totally dependent on primary sector for their livelihood. These people are so accustomed of using the traditional methods that they are not ready to accept new ways. Sometimes these farmers are not educated enough to be aware of different advancements leaving them with same old manual ways. Another reason is financial resistance. In today's time, these farmers are having much difficulties in meeting both ends, forget about having enough resources for investment in up to date technology. Which brings us to the next issue in hand - Non-existent Economies of Scale. Economies of Scale refers to phenomenon that helps entrepreneurs to take advantage by producing in large quantities so that fixed cost can be used at better rate, thereby decreasing cost of production, which results in increase of profit margin. Farmers in India aren't able to level up their production to actually take up this advantage and this is due to many factors such as weather fluctuations and related issues. For example, drop in temperature causes respirator y disease which slows down the production and increase in feed consumption. Our whole market depends on a basic Law of Demand and Supply, i.e., More the demand, more will market increase to meet up the demand, and vice versa. Our industry works on that law as well. When the industry goes well, many people join the industry

which create more supply, ultimately resulting a fall in price and this erratic increase in production has often been the biggest contributor to the downfall in prices. S l o p s l i ke t h i s a re n o t a n e w phenomenon for our industry but what have we done to learn from our past mistakes. Some plausible solutions can be to bring down feed cost, if need be, by introducing genetically modified crops for higher yields and low cost of production. To create awareness, to bring about upgradation of infrastructure and technology, resulting in economies of scale. Curtail cyclical over expansion, encourage consumption of processed meat and maintain cold chain facilities. To survive one has to adapt, the best way to evolve for a species is always to learn and var y itself according to the surroundings that is exposed to. In hindsight, problems in hand aren't as gigantic as they seem to be, they just need to be addressed from the core. We, as an Industry need to stop for a moment and try to find solutions rather than cribbing about the slump. Success of any enterprises can always be measured by its ability to change with a change. It is a famous saying that what cause an Industry to go downhill is not how bad things are, but how things are handled within.

ROLE OF ENZYMES IN POULTRY FEED INGREDIENTS Introduction The major nutrient components of feed ingredients are carbohydrate, protein and fat. These nutrients need to be digested and broken down to simple sugars and fatty acids by digestive secretions and enzymes before they can be absorbed and utilised by animals. The enzymes are produced at different sites in the intestinal tract and help in better utilisation of feed ingredients thereby improving the animal performance. Use of enzymes in poultry The young birds lack the enzymes needed for maximum utilisation of feed ingredients. The poultry ingredients contain non starch polysaccharides and phytates at different levels. These non starch polysaccharides contain some anti nutritional factors that reduces the digestibility of nutrients. Addition of enzymes in feed ingredients degrades the NSPs in feed and improves the digestibility of nutrients thereby improving the performance of poultry. Some of the feed enzymes are carbohydrases, proteases and phytases. Carbohydrase enzyme The enzyme carbohydrase breaks down carbohydrates into simpler sugars. They are fibre degrading and starch degrading enzymes. Xylanase and β-glucanase are the main fibre degrading enzymes. Xylanase breaks down arabinoxylan in grains and their by products. β-glucanases break down β-glucans in barley and oats and their by-products. Theses Xylanases and β-glucanases improve the average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency in broilers. 14

Starch degrading enzyme

Phytase enzyme

The starch degrading enzyme amylase break down the starch that is present in grains and its b y p ro d u c t s . T h e s e e n z y m e s allow poultr y to extract more energy from feed that can be conver ted into meat and egg production.

Cereal grains and oil cakes contain 55 to 80 per cent of total phosphorus in the form of phytic acid. This phytate phosphorus is poorly utilised by poultry and is excreted in faeces. Hence the birds are unable to utilise the phosphorus in feed. The phytase enzyme is not produced by pigs and poultry that break down phytate. Supplementation of phytase enzyme improves egg production and egg shell quality in laying hens.

Protease enzyme The protein degrading enzyme protease breaks down the proteinaceous substances in plant materials and proteinaceous antinutrients in vegetable proteins. These proteases can be used to reduce the level of trypsin inhibitors that are present in the soybean m e a l t h u s i m p ro v i n g p ro te i n digestibiilty.

Conclusion The use of enzymes has been increasing day by day. Supplementing enzymes as feed additives improves the digestibility of feed ingredients and thereby improving the feed efficiency and performance of poultry.

EGGS AS NATURE'S VITAMIN PILLS TO BEAT INDIA'S HUNGER Introduction Among an index of 117 countries, India ranked 102nd on the Global Hunger Index (GHI), which was the lowest ranking among all South Asian countries assessed in the Global hunger report 2019. This year, India's ranking fell by a significant margin, with even Pakistan, which is the only country in South Asia to rank below India, ranking higher in the 94th place. Based on these numbers, India needs measures that aim at reduction of hunger and also improve the child wasting rate which was highlighted in the same report. It is the need of the hour to look at nutrient dense sources of food which can be incorporated in the diet example peanut paste, seafood, lean meat, whole grains etc. One such important food source with high biological value is egg, which can play a crucial role in hunger elimination, which is the sustainable goal of UN. Nutritive value of eggs Egg remains a food product of high nutritional quality for adults including elderly people and children and is extensively consumed worldwide. Eggs contain essential lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements as given in figure 1. One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids. They provide offering a moderate calorie source (about 140 kcal/100 g), great cooking potential and low economic cost. Indeed, eggs have been identified to represent the lowestcost animal source for proteins, vitamin A, iron, vitamin B12, riboflavin, choline, and the second lowest-cost source for zinc and calcium. In addition to providing wellbalanced nutrients for infants and adults, egg contains a myriad of biologically active components. It has to be mentioned that eggshell and its tightly associated eggshell membranes are usually not consumed, although eggshell membranes are edible. Bioactive peptides in eggs

ERS commodity analysts point to higher demand for red meat as one of the drivers of this increase. Recovering

Demands from Odisha makes chicken prices soar in North AP Owing to the gap between supply and demand, the price of broiler chicken is increasing across nor th Andhra Pradesh, comprising Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts. Outlets in various parts of Vizag and other parts of the region sold 1kg boiler chicken between Rs.160 and 180. SK Hussain, a meat trader said, “The price of boiler chicken goes up in the peak winter. This year however the demand for the chicken increased just a day after the auspicious Kartika month.” Due to winters and Christmas season, the demand from Odisha is expected to increase furthermore leading prices to reach as high as 200, source said. Rapeseed meal has high quantities of glucsinolates, which are compounds that are unhealthy for poultry, said Godrej Agrovet chairman Nadir Godrej, and this is where technology comes in. “We have developed a process to remove the compounds, which means we can now feed poultry at a greatly reduced cost as rapeseed is cheaper than soymeal in India” he said. Madhya Pradesh’s eggcentric problem: Choose between nutrition and hegemony A strange protest is shaping up in Madhya Pradesh (MP) over the Kamal Nath government’s recent decision to provide eggs under the supplementary food programme. “We plan a postcard campaign to reach each and every school and tell students to not participate in the programme on the days eggs are distributed,” said Ashish Pokharna, who heads Jain Social Group in Ratlam district’s Jawra tehsil. The organisation has plans for similar drives across the state before meeting Nath during the upcoming assembly session to seek a rollback, said Hemant Jain, state chief. On the other hand, some 1.14 lakh people from 17 districts in MP signed a petition supporting the inclusion of egg and plan to submit it to Nath. The controversy over eggs, not the first of its kind, started after the Nath government decided to provide at least three eggs a week starting April 2020 to every child at Anganwadi centres across MP — a state where half the children are malnourished. Many, including those with knowledge of public health, welcomed the move; but a section came out in opposition, claiming such a move would be an assault on the culture of “vegetarian state”. Their protests were despite the government’s assurance of providing for alternatives for vegetarian children and mothers. Poultry Planner | Vol. 21 | No.12 | December - 2019

FLOAT TEST - TO TELL IF EGGS ARE FRESH Eggs are usually kept for a long time, so even if you're well past the date on the carton it's worth checking to see if the eggs are still good. The quality of an egg changes as the egg ages. Fresh eggs are great for any dish where the egg is the star, such as an omelette or Eggs Benedict, but older eggs are great for baking or for hardboiled eggs. How to tell if eggs are fresh without cracking them open? One of the coolest kitchen hacks to tell how fresh an egg is, use the float test. Ÿ

Fill a deep bowl, pan or large measuring cup with cold water, enough to cover an egg by an inch or two.

Ÿ

Gently place the egg in the water, on the bottom of the container.

Ÿ

If the egg stays on its side, it's very fresh.

Ÿ

If the egg stands upright on one end, it's an older egg, but still good to eat.

Ÿ

If the egg floats, it's bad and should be thrown away.

It is Simple Science… There's a simple reason why bad eggs float. There's a thin membrane just inside the eggshell. Because eggshells are porous, air passes through the shell into a little air pocket between the membrane and the eggshell. As air gets into that

pocket, the quality of the egg deteriorates. The freshest eggs don't have much air inside the shell, so they don't float. The more air inside the egg, the more buoyant the egg is and thus the more it floats. Take a close look and smell the raw egg, a rotten egg will smell like it. If the egg smells okay, check the egg white. Fresher eggs will have a thick, cloudy egg white that doesn't spread out. If the egg white is thin and spreads out or it is clear, it's an older egg. If the egg yolk has a rounded dome that stands-up it's a fresh egg. If the egg yolk is flat or if it breaks easily, it's an old egg.
