FOREWORD
BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD
Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, selfesteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities.
“HEALTH IS A LIFESTYLE AND I CHOSE IT.” HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa
In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome ofan effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will gather together to support local teams and sporting initiaves in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.
HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth & Sports, President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee

asser 10 already made a buzz creating excitement and enthusiasm from the people who love sports. The event will include several programmes accompanying the 10 year anniversary celebrations of the tournament’s launch. Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, affirmed that the Nasser sports tournament will complete its first decade in the holy month of ramadan. Since its launch, it had paved a clear path for its growth and development as a distinct national project that contributes significantly to the advancement of sports in the kingdom and the discovery of more sporting talent capable of joining clubs and national teams, which became evident through the outputs of this tournament. “The Nasser sports tournament has reached the tenth edition and is offering something new this year. We directed the tournament’s organising committee to hold early and continuous meetings in order to act on those ideas and proposals
that had been presented, and to settle on a group of sports competitions that enrich the tournament in its first decade.”Shaikh Nasser explained.
CYCLING COMPETITION KICKED OFF FOR NASSER 10
As the tournament commenced, a more action packed Nasser 10 was witnessed by the spectators. It didn’t disappoint when the tournament added cycling as one of the sports included in the competition held at the Sakhir area near Al Areen Wildlife Park. Last April 28, there was a total of 69 athletes who joined as Nasser 10 started its season. Star cycling Ali Hassan was named the ultimate winner during the Cycling Championships, amidst a wide participation which reached 69 athletes as part of the sports festival organised by the Bahrain Cycling Association, which was held for a distance of 30 kilometres. Fatima Ali bagged the title in the women’s category. She proved her extraordinary skills and was able to highlight her outstanding position in the sport of cycling by winning the first place in the 10-kilometre “Women’s Individual” road race.

NUTRITION
QUICK FACTS FOR A HEALTHY RAMADAN
YOUSIF AL SAHAF Vice President Dynamics Gym and Nutrition
GOOD TO KNOW Light exercise between 3 pm and Maghreb time can help you burn body fat which allows you to lose or maintain your weight.
ABSTINENCE FROM DAWN TO DUSK FROM ALL THE FOOD AND BEVERAGES DURING THE ISLAMIC MONTH WITH THE SEARING HEAT OF THE SUMMER IS NO EASY TASK. ONE WILL DEFINITELY NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS TO REMAIN HEALTHY ALL THROUGHOUT. HERE ARE SOME OF THE COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED JUST FOR YOU.
FEW TIPS TO PREVENT THE FEELING OF THIRST DURING YOUR RAMADAN DAYS:
Q:
WILL I ALWAYS FEEL TIRED AFTER IFTAR?
Your body has been deprived of nutrients all day, carbohydrates being one of them. Ingestion of carbohydrates will cause an insulin spike, but your body should adjust with time.
Q:
I’M FASTING ALL DAY, SHOULD I EAT ALL NIGHT?
The truth is, you are bound to be hungry and thirsty at one point or another during the day. You can delay this
18
POWERUP | MAY 2017
process by ingesting foods high in fiber, which will help keep you full for longer periods of time. Foods high in potassium will also help combat the thirst and get you through the day.
Q:
AM I BOUND TO LOSE MUSCLE MASS IN RAMADAN?
The issue with muscles is that they need to be fed systematically throughout the day. Yes, you might lose a bit of muscle. However, ingesting proper
amount of calories along with taking the proper supplements will help you minimize muscle loss.
sugar and help you keep your hands away from all the post iftar sweets.
Q: Q: WILL RAMADAN HELP ME WITH MY WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
You can take advantage of the 16 or so hours of fasting to get your cardio in. Nothing hard though as blood sugar levels will be low. Ensure to eat foods which will keep you full for long periods of time (foods rich in fiber). This will help regulate blood
DOES THAT MEAN I CAN’T HAVE ANY SWEETS?
Sweets are almost a must in Ramadan. As your body is deprived of caloric intake for 16 hours of the day, you can have some! Just preferably an hour after your first meal of the day, otherwise you’ll cause too much confusion amongst your insulin levels.
Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and water between Iftar and Suhour to prevent dehydration Limit your intake of fried foods and foods high in fats and sugar Avoid foods high in salt such as pickles, salty crackers and nuts, and canned foods Try not to drink too much tea especially at Suhour as it can increase fluids lost through urination Don’t overeat at the Suhour meal

STRONGER KNEES AGAINST THE PAIN STRENGTHENING EXERCISES
MOST PEOPLE EXPERIENCE KNEE PAIN. IT’S A COMMON COMPLAINT THAT AFFECTS PEOPLE FROM ALL AGES. ACCORDING TO STUDIES, ABOUT 20% OF THE ADULT POPULATION SUFFER FROM PROBLEMS WITH THEIR KNEES. HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER:
A
LEG EXTENSION (ON CHAIR)
Begin seated in a chair, feet flat in front of you, palms grasping chair edge at sides or front. Keep left foot planted and upper body still. Extend the right leg (bending from the knee) until it is parallel with the floor. Hold this position for two seconds and then (optional) pulse up and down for three seconds. Bend knee to lower right leg back to floor to complete one rep. Complete all reps on one side and alternate legs.

LYING LEG CURLS
Lie face down on the floor and alternately flex your knees so your feet move as far as possible towards the back of your thighs. Wear ankle weights to increase the intensity of the exercise. Perform lying leg curls several times per week for two to three sets of ten of more repetitions each.

CALF RAISES
Standing calf raises are executed with one or both feet. They are fre uently done on a raised surface with the heel lower than the toes to allow a greater stretch on the working muscles. The exercise is performed by raising the heel as far as possible. Weights or other methods of providing resistance are commonly used, but the exercise is also effective with body weight alone.
EXERCISE TIP
Did you know that in spite of what you may have read, there is no such thing as the “best time to exercise?” It turns out that the best time to exercise is when it works for you!

Hold your bridged position for a couple of seconds before easing back down slowly.
WALL SQUATS

ack in high school, a classmate of mine fell asleep while the teacher was facing the board. When he turned back, he tried waking him up but failed for the nth time. It was probably because of frustration that the teacher uttered these words, “There is a clown in every tribe” referring to my classmate who would always fall asleep. If a sport was a tribe, then it too must have its fair share of clowns. Someone once said, “Even if you walk on water, they’ll still say it’s because you can’t swim.” This may be true, but the question is, how will you rise

above from these situations without getting affected by clowns who continuously try to drag you back? The fact is, to maintain your PowerUP in sports is not alien to maintaining it in your personal or professional life. The same psychological stages of success apply here, as it does apply everywhere else. It is only you who can protect yourself from other people’s negative energy. At the end of the day, true strength is being bold enough to walk away from the nonsense with your head held high. Whether you’re an athlete or someone who invests in the Sports Sector, you will
find a lot of obstacles to conquer, and you won’t be able to go through them unless you strongly believe in yourself. Some people say it’s resources, luck, background or connections that create successful individuals. Even though all these factors influence the path to success, the key to achieving something significant is SELF BELIEF. Don’t think for a second that your road to success is just like a walk in the park. As the famous adage goes, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.” Success and failure in sports depend on how much you are willing to do despite the

negative energy around you. Having positive peers may help, but those rising from the dirt have a better story to tell right? Remember, you should always make decisions based on logic and reason instead of emotion and/or dogma. One mistake too many people make is reacting to situations emotionally rather than thinking them out rationally. Take control of your life, because the only thing that will affect you is the thing that you choose to be affected by. Always keep your eyes on the prize and stand out from that noisy crowd, YOU GOT THIS!

your performance. Enter the correct mindset of going out doing the best with what you have’.
Racing is a test of training and tests make us nervous. Test results are polarizing. You pass or fail, you win or lose. That’s a lot of pressure.
Sports nutrition is not complicated. Stay away from commercial agenda and product marketing, successful fuelling plans have remained virtually the same for decades.
Take the time to remember the preparation that has gone into your race. Remember good sessions and remember painful sessions. Understand that if you have done all you can in the allocated time, you have to be happy with the outcome of that work. If you are a little ‘undercooked’ and haven’t been wholly focused on the task of racing, that too is understandable. Do not force training in the last days before competition. You will only enter the race fatigued and unfit, which is infinitely worse than just unfit. Use your relative freshness to your advantage. It is far better to be slightly undertrained than to be overtrained. Concentrating on race routines and nutritional preparation won’t take too much energy but will improve
Days before a race, it is important to reduce fibre intake. Fruit, vegetables and salad play dominant roles in our daily diet but they have no place in the day preceding a race. Nerves are not a bad thing. They are a physiological and hormonal response to prepare the body for action. Once the gun fires, nerves are replaced by concentration.
EXPERIENCE PEOPLE. WATCH OTHER PEOPLE’S FACES, THEIR JOY, THEIR PAIN, THEIR EFFORT AND ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR ACHIEVEMENT. THE DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S GOALS, IN THEIR SHAPES AND THEIR ABILITIES I S W H AT M A K E S T H I S SPORT COME ALIVE. KEEP PERSPECTIVE. TRIATHLON IS A SPORT AND SPORT IS MARVELLOUS BECAUSE IT MIRRORS LIFE. LIKE LIFE, IT IS THE PROCESS RATHER THAN THE RESULT THAT MATTERS IN THE END. SOMETIMES, PEOPLE ENDURE PAIN BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE. THE GRIEVING; THE ILL; THE INJURED; THE VICTIMS. RACERS ENDURE PAIN TOO, BUT IN RACING, IT IS OUR CHOICE AND IT IS NOT INFINITE. I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU all over again. It’s a whole new level of fun for all of us. I think it CAN EXPERIENCE will be great for people 7 years old and above. THE THRILL OF SKYDIVING INDOORS! IT WAS NOT EASY IN Who would have thought THE BEGINNING that jumping into a vertical wind tunnel could mimic what skydiving really feels like? At first, it was pretty noisy with a massive whirring noise as the fan start-up but I got the hang of it. They provided me suit, helmet and transparent goggles and I can’t really explain the feeling but it was truly awesome!
INTERESTING, FUN AND DIFFERENT FROM EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER DONE
It was not something you could just experience anywhere. It was interesting and fun! If you go to the parks then you really wouldn’t think that something like this exists. Children my age probably wouldn’t even think that they would be enjoying this but once you have actually done it, it would feel amazing and you would want to do it
The thing is you need to be fully kitted up for your foray into indoor free falling. The special suits were nice and baggy but because of these I had a hard time hearing everyone but they would explain everything to you. Then the helmet and the funny goggles were also part of my suit. In one session, one will get four attempts. I have done quite well the last two times.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
It was also incredible that I got to watch the instructors do their thing. They would simply run and jump straight into the airstream. It was quite literally hair-raising stuff as they were showing off their skills. The instructors were always on hand to assist you if necessary. I recommend this to everyone so that they can enjoy something spectacular with their family and friends.

THE PIONEERS
Filipino Mountain Bikers - Bahrain was founded by a group of Mountain Bike enthusiasts in Bahrain led by Mr. Jesse Saulog in 2009. There were around 8 pioneers including the current president of the group, Mr. Joey De Guzman. These
men aimed to continue their passion in biking and at the same time to keep themselves fit. Being away from their families working abroad has not been the easiest and in order to overcome this, the group was created. Gradually, people started seeing them roaming around
the roads of Manama and those with the same interest asked if they can join. Slowly, the group grew larger. From then on, FMTBB was recognized as the pioneering Filipino MTB group in the Kingdom and was officially registered in the Philippine Embassy acknowledged as one of the core groups in the Filipino Community in Bahrain.
ASPIRATIONS
The club aspires to bring everyone together as a community riding bikes by offering supportive, energetic and empowering environment for people pursuing a healthy and active lifestyle.
They aim to join and support different events in the Kingdom which are organized by other groups like duathlons and marathons. The club, even though mostly bikers, are not limiting the group with competitions and bike related activities only, they also participate in charities like Diabetes Walks and Filipino Community events as volunteers/marshals.
MORE THAN JUST A CLUB
The Filipino Mountain BikersBahrain Family is a leisure group. Bikers ride when the majority is available without compromising
the main reason why they are all here, WORK. They ride early morning of weekends and/or evenings of weekdays. The group chooses routes to take each meeting which are around 30 to 50 kilometres. The group is composed of a lead, a medic and a sweeper who make sure that no one is left behind. They always take special caution in crossing junctions in which the seniors takes charge. They make sure that newbies enjoy their first ride safely. The name says Filipino Mountain Bikers Bahrain but everyone who wishes to join are very much welcome.

One girl in particular inspired Ryf; she completed 21.35kilometres in her wheelchair. “She told us how she managed the downhill parts of the race and showed us her hands, as they were a bit burnt from breaking. It was very nice to see how positively spirited she was and how she managed to come so far,” Ryf said. Furthermore, the amount of people joining in on the run seriously impressed Red Bull athletes. We all started together and were there for one reason: to run for those who can’t. This makes it a very special feeling to be part of the Wings for Life World Run. yengar Yoga is a form of yoga that puts emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama). The instructors teach classic yoga postures with the use of props. They use blocks, blankets and belts and these props allow deeper penetration into the posture, as well as a longer stay.
WHY USE PROPS? SUPPORT
Props can support the entire body in a posture or various parts of the body that requires rest.
RELAXATION AND STRESS REDUCTION Props have proven to be invaluable in the treatment of immune disorder.
OVERCOME FEAR As a support, a prop can also help the student’s overcome fear of falling, losing balance, etc.
LONG TIMING In therapeutic prescription the sequence of the poses, the form and alignment and time amount is held as important as the poses prescribed.
PRANAYAMA This can be quite effective in treating certain respiratory, nervous, blood pressure, cardiac and psychological disorders. Pranayama is performed in a seated posture but when use of props, its normally done lying on the floor.

EAT LIGHT While it’s not a good idea to perform yoga with empty stomach, it’s also a wrong move to eat heavy meals before the session. A lightly filled stomach will provide you a better edge to get into some challenging poses.

BRAVE’S FIFTH INSTALLMENT’S SUCCESS
The card was headlined by a welterweight encounter in which English prospect Carl Booth takes on French knockout artist TaharHadbi. The comain event was Abdul Muneer, who is regarded as one of the best Indian MMA fighters, taking on Canadian-Indian Gary Mangat. The duo have been going on back and forth at various platforms and have gained significant attention. The
minor-feud started when Mangat called out Muneer for a fight to determine who was the best Indian MMA fighter. According to Booth, his second win inside the Brave cage was enough to deserve a title shot next. Although “Fast Hands” started off with a bang, trying to corner “The Bomber”, the Englishman slowly started to find his rhythm and stung his opponent repeatedly with leg kicks. Booth’s victory means he improves to 8-1 in his MMA careeer. Hadbi, on the other hand, sees a three-fight winning streak snapped and his record now reads 13 wins with seven losses. “I deserve my strap, and I think that was for the title. I should be champion

The co-main event of the evening featured a local rivalry and GurdarshanMangat’s youth proved too much for Abdul Muneer, India’s Fighter of the Year for 2016. “Saint Lion” and “The Cutman”, who brawled a day before during their staredown at the public weigh-ins, showed much more respect for each other once the fight started. But Mangat’s wrestling-based gameplan kept Muneer at bay, and he now improves to 10 wins with only one defeat in his professional record.

ELDAR ELDAROV WON BRAVE 6
In the main event of the evening, KHK MMA’s EldarEldarov fought the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Henrique “Rasputin” Gomes in one of the most anticipated lightweight bouts of the season. In the most important bout of Brave 6, even after a tough weight cut in his first attempt at making 70.7kg -- the lightweight division limit with the onepound tolerance for non-title bouts --, Eldarov imposed himself physically and technically, finishing the fight within the first round. Inside the cage, Eldar started the fight putting pressure over Henrique and taking the opponent against the fence. Taking advantage of being the stronger one, Eldarov took the Brazilian down and uickly finished the combat with a vicious
sequence of elbows, that made the referee Scott Manhardt interfere and stop the fight, declaring the Russian-Bahraini the winner by technical knockout.

WHAT SPARTAN RACE TAUGHT
THE POWERUP TEAM OUR OWN TEAM JOINED THE SPARTAN RACE BAHRAIN AND HAVE ACHIEVED THINGS WE THOUGHT WE WEREN’T CAPABLE OF.
TEAMWORK MAKES DREAM WORK
The Spartan race is all about teamwork. We would have been nowhere without the help from each other. There were times when we had to pull someone up. There were times when our fellow runners would help us. No teamwork can mean a nightmare’s worth of possibilities in this race.
DISABILITY IS NOT A HINDRANCE TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
Believe it or not, our team wanted to stop after a while but just when we thought we wanted to quit, we saw fellow Spartans with disability rocking the race. This made us realise that people who chase dreams and accomplish them have a winners mentality and that is all you need. They believe in themselves and so should you. Take the pain you experience, and use it as a tool. Use pain as an advantage for yourself.
36
POWERUP | MAY 2017
NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER!
The race was about testing one’s limits. We all have limits, however, there comes a time when those limits have to be reevaluated or just plainly be destroyed.
BATTLESCARS ARE NECESSARY
Somewhere along the course you’re guaranteed to get beat up. It’s inevitable. Life itself is an ultimate obstacle course. So whether a break up has bruised your heart, or a few burpees have bruised your biceps, remember, they are all part of life. If it was easy then it wouldn’t be worth it.
WE KNEW AT THE FINISH LINE
The slogan of the Reebok Spartan Race is: “You’ll know at the finish line.” And we really did! It’s another thing to spend two hours facing your fears, pushing the limits of your strength, and testing your relationship in ways you’ve never imagined. Spartan high is definitely something to be experienced.
This made us realise that people who chase dreams and accomplish them have a winners mentality and that is all you need.

CAN YOU BRIEFLY INTRODUCE YOURSELF? WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THE BAHRAIN MERIDA PRO-CYCLING TEAM?
I was a professional cyclist myself and I have spent 15 years riding for different teams in the cycling industry. After my long and rewarding journey, I was given the opportunity to prove myself in a new challenge, which is to be the sports director of team Astana. In just five years, I have gained substantial knowledge and experiences to get me where I am today. I am currently a part of a new and most promising team, the Bahrain Merida.
YOU WERE A FORMER PRO ROAD CYCLIST YOURSELF, WHERE DID YOUR CYCLING JOURNEY BEGIN?
It began in a town where cycling is a tradition. I started my cycling journey at the age of 12 where I’ve joined a team. Up to this date,
38
POWERUP | MAY 2017
cycling has not changed its effect on me. It is still one of the greatest and most enjoyable sport.
HOW AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE THAT YOU WANT TO BE A SPORTS DIRECTOR?
The truth is, I didn’t want to leave the cycling world. I wanted to remain in cycling but this time, in a different light. As a rider, I have acquired skills and I believe that these set of expertise are meant to be shared to the next generation of cyclists.
GENERALLY, WHY SHOULD A PRO-CYCLING TEAM HAVE A SPORTS DIRECTOR? WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY ROLES OF A DIRECTOR?
A Sports Director plays a pivotal role in the performance of any major sporting organisation. We are the ones coming up with tactical plans at the races which will maximize the potential of the
CYCLING
team. We are motivators and since we have a good eye for talents, we fulfill one of our most important roles, to select the appropriate riders for specific races and lead them on competition.
BAHRAIN MERIDA IS A STRONG TEAM WINNING RACES IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A DIRECTOR OF THE TEAM? HOW DO YOU COMMUNICATE YOUR PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS TO THE TEAM?
The global plan for each rider is done early at the beginning of the season. Lately, the changes are made just in particular cases. We communicate between doctors, trainers, and other sport directors to make the right call for each race. Planning is very important, because we need to know the details of each race to compose the precise composition of riders for it.
AS A SPORTS DIRECTOR,YOU SELECT WHICH RIDER GOES TO WHICH RACE, WHAT ARE CRITERIA FOR THAT? WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE IN CHOOSING RIDERS FOR SPECIFIC RACES?
We do a selection regarding characteristics of rider (climber, sprinter, helper, etc.) and his momentary condition. We always choose a goal of the season for each
rider or group of riders. If a rider gets sick or injured, we need to replace him with some reserve rider.
WHAT IS THE TEAM’S STRATEGY FOR UPCOMING GIRO D'ITALIA?
We are just about starting Giro and everything is all set. The strategy will be done during the stages based on the current situation and feeling of the team. Every moment is good to gain some advantage and in every moment you can lose some priceless time. So you need to be focused and ready for those circumstances.
THE TEAM IS AIMING FOR VINCENZO NIBALI TO WIN GIRO BUT WE KNOW THAT RACES ARE UNPREDICTABLE, HOW DO YOU CONTROL THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEAM? ANY SPECIFIC PLANS TO REACH THAT ULTIMATE GOAL?
As I have explained before, it is important to be focused and to race in front to have control on the race. All the team will support and keep Vincenzo’s ultimate goal, that is to win it.
HOW DO YOU DEVELOP TEAM STRATEGIES? HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE THE TEAM EXECUTE THOSE STRATEGIES?
We have every day meetings with riders and staff where we would explain the strategies and each day’s
goals. We’d also analyse what was done and what we can do better. In the end, a lot depend on the physical condition of the riders and rivals tactics.
WHAT SHOULD THE CYCLING FANS FROM BAHRAIN EXPECT FROM THE BAHRAIN MERIDA TEAM AT THE GIRO D’ ITALIA? I believe that team Bahrain Merida is ready to fight for final victory at the Giro d’ Italia. Of course, we are not the only team with this goal and the fight will definitely be tough. But the whole team, mechanics, physiotherapists, doctors, sport directors and riders will work with their best efforts together to make the country and fans proud. POWERUP | MAY 2017

BRILLIANT VICTORY IN SPECTACULAR 2017 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX SEBASTIAN VETTEL PIPPED LEWIS HAMILTON TO WIN A TACTICAL BATTLE IN BAHRAIN, WITH MERCEDES’ VALTTERI BOTTAS SLIPPING FROM POLE TO FINISH THIRD
“The crowds here have yet again been treated to an incredible weekend of motorsport” errari, so long without winning a Formula One title, made their intent to end the drought absolutely clear after they took the fight to Mercedes at the Bahrain Grand Prix, with Sebastian Vettel securing the win and the lead of the world championship.

RACE HIGHLIGHTS VERSTAPPEN’S CRASH
Kimi Raikkonen was fourth for Ferrari, with Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull’s only finisher in fifth, team mate Max Verstappen having retired early with brake failure. Felipe Massa secured sixth for Williams, from Force India’s Sergio Perez and Haas’s Romain Grosjean.
50
POWERUP | MAY 2017
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg and Force India’s Esteban Ocon completed the top ten. From third on the grid, Vettel jumped Hamilton’s Silver Arrow going into Turn 1 at the start, then chased polesitter and early leader Bottas as the three of them were joined by the Red Bulls of fast-starting Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo in a high-speed train. Vettel and Ferrari gambled on going for the undercut with an early pit stop on lap 10, and it worked well for them. They were followed by Verstappen and Red Bull doing likewise next time around. But as Vettel recovered in 12th place, Verstappen crashed in Turn 4 on the 12th lap, due to suspected brake failure.
FORMULA ONE
VETTEL’S IMPRESSIVE VICTORY
A lap later Carlos Sainz, leaving the pits after a stop in his Toro Rosso, collided with the side of rookie Lance Stroll’s Williams as the Canadian turned into Turn 1 - a misdemeanour which subsequently earned Sainz a three-place grid drop for the next round in Canada. The safety car was deployed, leaving Mercedes no alternative but to pit both their drivers at the same time. That meant stacking Hamilton behind Bottas, and while trying to give the Finn’s crew time to service him, Hamilton came in so slowly that he was deemed by the stewards to have hindered the following Ricciardo, and was handed a five-second penalty that would prove very costly. The safety car promoted a surprised Vettel to the lead, but on soft rubber as his main rivals (bar Ricciardo) had opted for more supersofts, Hamilton soon repassed the Australian’s Red Bull when the track went green on the 17th lap, and closed in on Bottas who was struggling with oversteer. He dutifully moved over to let his faster team mate go by in Turn 1 on the 29th lap, setting up another Vettel versus Hamilton encounter. The Ferrari driver pitted again, for softs, on the 33rd lap, putting Hamilton into the lead. He held it until the 41st lap, as Vettel closed in, then pitted for another set of softs - and to take his time penalty. Once again he caught and passed team mate Bottas, and a blistering series of fastest laps cut the deficit to the Ferrari from 1 to 5.8s by the 54th lap. But thereafter Hamilton eased back, finishing . s adrift after a day of valuable damage limitation. The unhappy Bottas hung on to complete the
podium, two seconds ahead of Raikkonen’s Ferrari, with Ricciardo slumping after the safety car to finish fifth, well behind the second Finn but equally a long way ahead of Massa’s Williams.
THE FINAL VERDICT
Perez drove brilliantly to take seventh for Force India, heading a happy Grosjean in his Haas and Hulkenberg, whose own feisty performance earned himself and Renault their first points of the year. Ocon took up his usual reservation of 10th place in the second Force India, but Pascal Wehrlein might have felt as deserving of the final point after a great comeback for Sauber confirmed that he is now fully fit again. He took 11th after outfoxing Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat on the last lap. The Russian had been involved in one of the race’s best battles, with Renault’s Jolyon Palmer and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso. Palmer dropped back after damaging his front wing on the Toro Rosso, while the Spaniard’s Honda-powered car again let him down in sight of the che uered flag. It was a bad day for the Woking team with yet another suspected MGU-H failure preventing team mate Stoffel Vandoorne from starting. Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson joined the retirements late in the race, and besides Sainz, Stroll and Verstappen, Kevin Magnussen stopped early due to electronics issues in his Haas. After his 44th career victory, Vettel leads the championship table with points to Hamilton’s 1, with Bottas now third on 38 from Raikkonen on 32, Verstappen on 25 and Ricciardo on 22. Mercedes still lead the constructors’ stakes, with 102 points to Ferrari’s 99, with Red Bull on 47 ahead of Force India on 17, Williams on 1 , the luckless Toro Rosso on 12, Haas on 8 and Renault on 2.

THE ACCELERATING WORLD OF TORO ROSSO SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO HAS BEEN COMPETING IN THE FORMULA 1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 2006. LET’S GET TO KNOW WHERE THIS TEAM CAME FROM AND TAKE A GLIMPSE OF THE QUALITY DESIGN AND ENGINEERING OF THEIR 2017 TECHNOLOGY FEATURES.
THE BIRTH OF TORO ROSSO
Toro Rosso was created with the view to finding two extra cockpits for the stars of the future coming through the ranks of Red Bull Junior Driver Program. It is like a training ground for young drivers who aspire to be world champions someday. It is an opportunity for them to develop their extraordinary driving skills. It is to open up more windows for the younger drivers to have that chance of a lifetime.” Graham explained. Formed from the
52
POWERUP | MAY 2017
ashes of the plucky Minardi team, Toro Rosso is a s uad in which young drivers from Red Bull’s prodigious talent pool could cut their teeth in Grand Prix racing.
DRIVERS’ TRAINING
With wider tyres and more down force, F1 cars were not only much faster in but also tougher to drive from a physical standpoint. Training for the Scuderia Toro Rosso drivers revolves around the use of simulators. These accurately
replicate every aspect of all the circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Once they get to the simulator session, over the first four or five runs of the track, we just let the drivers do what they want for them to find what best works for them.” Graham explained. Once the drivers feel comfortable with the circuit on the simulator, the engineers then set them specific tasks centred mainly on car’s setup, the tyres and the aero profile. These are all critical factors for their training.
FORMULA 1
DID YOU KNOW? TEAMS ARE PERMITTED TO CARRY OUT NO MORE THAN 15,000KM OF TESTING WITH A CURRENT CAR OR PREVIOUS YEAR S CAR IN A SINGLE CALENDAR YEAR. FORMULA 1 TESTING TAKES PLACE IN BAHRAIN AND HUNGARY THIS SEASON. AS THE SPORT OF FORMULA ONE RACING GREW EVER MORE TECHNICALLY DEMANDING, SO THE PRACTICE OF TESTING GREW IN IMPORTANCE. WHAT MOST FANS DON T KNOW IS THAT THE TESTING CAN ONLY TAKE PLACE WITH ONE CAR PER TEAM AT FIA-APPROVED SITES. THEY HAVE BEEN DOING THIS PROCESS SINCE 2008, WHERE THEY WOULD DO THREE TO FOUR CAR TESTS BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE NEXT RACE. THE TESTING'S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO CHECK CARS SET UP, CAR PERFORMANCE, RELIABILITY, AND MORE EXPERIENCE FOR THE DRIVERS. -GRAHAM WATSON: TEAM MANAGER OF TORO ROSSO

FORMULA 1
DISSECTING THE TORO ROSSO STR12 The team ditched its thumb-style nose for 2017, trading it for a narrower nose solution. The nose sits as far back over the neutral section as is possible with extremely short pillars employed to connect the two. While the FIA has tightened the reins on stalks to mount the camera housings on. The team is also utilising an S duct once more but the outlet is more pronounced on this year’s challenger, with their pitot tube array lengthened to match. The front brake duct is a carryover from last season but this is all about the suspension. The team has designed an elegant horn which extrudes from the upright above the wheel rim, not only changing the suspension kinematics but also changing how the airflow moves down the car. The sidepods are much narrower than last
54

season, which is probably due to the team s switch to the up-to-date Renault power unit this year, whereas last year it ran a year old Ferrari power unit. The engine cover is complemented by the shark fin, which is everpresent for the 2017 pack, providing aerodynamic stability for the lower rear wing. The rear suspension shares some commonality with last year s design with the lower wishbone conjoined again, creating a much larger aerodynamic surface with which to control the airflow. The upper wishone is connected to the upright in the conventional manner this year, though with last year s taller mounting discarded, which has also had an impact on the positioning of the pull rod. The rear wing features many of the design cues from the car s
predecessors, starting with a support pillar that intersects with the exhaust, improving the rear wing s rigidity while having an aerodynamic effect on the plume being expelled by the exhaust. The STR12 is only the second challenger to be shown with Y150 Monkey Seat winglet and, like Ferrari s.

IT’S TRUE THAT YOU CAN’T MAKE DEPRESSION DISAPPEAR WITH A SNAP OF YOUR FINGERS, HOWEVER THERE ARE COPING METHODS THAN CAN HELP YOU DEAL WITH IT.
EXERCISE
Regular exercise is proven to improve mood and can reduce symptoms of depression.
HEALTHY DIET.
Stop eating junk food. Healthy eating habits prevents dietary problems leading to constipation plus increase in weight from high caloric intake.
DEVELOP HOBBIES & INTERESTS
Before depression kicked in, you must have been doing something you enjoyed in your spare time. May it be sports, music or theatre, whatever it was, find it and develop it again.
MAKE A LIST OF ALL YOUR WORRIES AND SORT THEM OUT
Start from the easiest you wish to resolve to the hardest. It can be through family, friends or someone impartial to help you sort things out.
SAY NO TO BAD VIBES. SAY YES TO GOOD VIBES.
Depressed people have more cynical thought patterns. Negative thinkers get an idea and immediately bombard it with the things that can go wrong. People who think in a positive way do not allow these disappointments to deter them. Take a chance and spread your wings and if you fall down, at least you learned something new! KEEP SMILING!
These tips are not designed to replace medical advice nor take the place of anti-depressants. If you have severe depression consult your GP or seek Psychiatric help and if you take medication, keep taking it on the doctor’s advice. Counselling can supplement medication. POWERUP | MAY 2017

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE SIGNS OF CHEST PAIN Not all heart problems come with clear warning signs. There is not always an alarming chest clutch followed by a fall to the floor like you see in movies. Some heart symptoms don’t even happen in your chest, and it’s not always easy to tell what’s going on.
F
ailure to seek not only immediate medical attention, but also the right type of attention, when experiencing chest pain is one of the primary reasons that patients often do not receive potentially life-saving treatment, says Dr. Ahmad Edris, Staff Physician, Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology in the Heart and Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “What will often happen is people with chest pain will dangerously discount their symptoms as something trivial, or go to their usual healthcare provider, when in fact that facility may not have the specialists nor the faculty required to give them the rapid care they need,” Dr.Edris said. “However, when it
64
POWERUP | MAY 2017
comes to matters of the heart, time is of the essence. If the cause of chest pain is indeed an underlying heart condition, the more time is wasted, the more the heart muscle is compromised.”
PATIENTS WITH CHEST PAIN ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION
Symptoms to be aware of include chest pressure, fullness or tightness, crushing pain radiating to the neck or upper extremities, pain that lasts for more than few minutes or gets worse with activity, as well as shortness of breath associated with nausea or vomiting. The Health Authority - Abu Dhabi has
officially designated Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi as a Chest Pain Center; therefore, the hospital will treat any patient visiting the Emergency Department with chest pain symptoms. The program gives residents access to specialist acute care, including consultant-level cardiologists available around-the-clock Patients will also benefit from Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s unique group practice model, which brings heart specialists across disciplines, such as cardiovascular medicine and cardio and thoracic surgery, under one roof to discuss complex patient cases and decide on the best course of treatment. And when you forget to rinse, it almost doesn’t feel right without that delightful minty taste in your mouth. Mouthwash has become an essential oral care product in our weekly grocery list. But do the benefits warrant it to be on the list or is it a no go for you? Let’s see what the expert says.
WHEN SHOULD I USE A MOUTHWASH?
Gum disease Tooth decay Temporary bad breath Periodontal disease from pregnancy Tooth sensitivity Recurring canker sores Bacterial build up from recent dental surgery Preventive measure while having braces
STARTING WITH THE BRIGHT SIDE
Mouthwashes vary in terms of benefit. While some types of products might deliver on one aspect, others might deliver on two or more. But there is no single all-rounder mouthwash that can deliver on all fronts. For more information: NOVA DENTAL CENTER +973 77 111115

There are a lot of people who don’t use mouthwash correctly enough to reap the full benefits of a rinse. If you plan on adding or keeping mouthwash in your daily routine, there are few tips to remember the next time you rinse: Always read the instructions guide printed on the bottle as some products are used in a diluted state. Always gargle and swish for at least 60 seconds. Most of the chemicals found in mouthwash will not even begin to work until 1 minute has passed. Don’t rinse with water after you gargle with the mouthwash as this will dilute the chemicals. Use mouthwash after flossing and brushing but without the use of a toothpaste as you may miss out on the benefits of both. Try to wait at least 30 minutes before you rinse if you have used toothpaste. Keep it off limits for children under 6 years of age. One should always balance the benefits with the negatives. Anything you introduce to your system should be put on a scale. For some, the benefits would not outweigh the negatives. Furthermore, to ensure optimal oral health. it is strongly advised to get an evaluation of your needs by a qualified dentist. If you are brushing and flossing regularly to maintain your dental health as well as attending your periodic hygiene sessions, some dentists would say that you’re better off without it.
