FOREWORD
BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities
for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and

FITNESS FUN FOR EVERYONE! THE LATEST IN FITNESS AND POSSIBLY THE TRENDIEST WORKOUT AROUND, JUST WHAT IS ZUMBA? WHO IS IT FOR, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT CAN WE GAIN FROM IT?
HOW TO “EAT HEALTHY” ZUMBA 101
A fitness program combining Latin and international music with dance moves, Zumba routines incorporate interval training — alternating fast and slow rhythms — and resistance training. Zumba is a “fun and effective” dance fitness class that provides “A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class. Expect upbeat music and dancing, including salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, soca, samba, hip hop and tango – and if you can lean into the experience, smiles, cheering, a good sweat and possibly a few giggles. Unlike other aerobic classes, a unique element of Zumba is that you receive very few verbal cues. The teacher shouts encouraging words and a few basic instructions, but mostly students watch and mimic. Most importantly, Zumba is
special because every class is like a Party and you won’t feel like it’s a workout.
FIVE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ZUMBA You can burn up to 700 calories in a Zumba class Zumba doesn’t make you feel like you are working out Zumba is social so a great place to meet new friends and to bond with existing friends. Approximately 15 million people take weekly Zumba classes in over 200,000 locations across 180 countries. Zumba promotes love and coming together as humanitarians, they have supported and aided many charities and tragedies all around the world and is big on giving back to the community.
WHO CAN ZUMBA?
In the words of the creator of Zumba, Alberto “Beto” Perez, “Zumba is for everybody and every body”. He stands firmly on basic Zumba fitness, catering to everyone of all fitness levels, further incorporating every aspect of fitness under the Zumba umbrella, creating Zumba for everyone: Zumbini for babies, Zumba Kids and Kids Jr. for kids 3-14 years, Zumba Gold for older clients, Zumba Toning for those who want light resistance, Aqua Zumba, Zumba Sentao which is training with a chair, Zumba Steps, and lately STRONG by Zumba™ which is a high intensity interval training workout driven by the science of Synced Music Motivation. In this regard, Zumba is for everyone and every group.
ZUMBA’S HEALTH ADVANTAGES
As an aerobic activity, Zumba can count toward the 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity recommended for most
healthy adults by the Department of Health and Human Services. First of all the benefits are endless to name a few; Burning calories and fat! Building endurance Improving cardiovascular health Improving blood pressure Improving coordination As a stress relief, improving your emotional and mental health
THE ZUMBA MASTERCLASS
Presented by Brandbox Events in association with local Zumba Instructor Group, the Zumba Masterclass will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel from 7 to 9 P.M. on the 11th of November, held by the world-renowned Zumba Education Specialist, Loretta Bates and will put Bahrain on the map of Zumba for having one of the highest profile world-toured Zes to grace its shores. In conclusion, Zumba is not just a workout but is all round health and wellness program that will change lives physically, emotionally and mentally.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
MASTERS OF THE MITTS 5th and 6th in the world to be certified in Mittology (pad training), the Mitt Brothers make a beast of a pair. Focusing on reflexes over memorization, Coaches Yaser and Ali specialize in a style that is unique, swift and complete mastery of a product of progressive application to technique.
THE ART OF SELFDEFENCE The Mitts Brothers found beauty in the art of selfdefense where the ‘weaker’ can take on the ‘stronger’ and use their body efficiently to defend themselves. They learned how important the connection of coordination, rhythm and timing are to creating an efficient fighter. “From teaching different styles through countering like Mayweather, getting angles like Mike Tyson and Lomanchinko and foot work like Mohammed Ali shows versatility. This makes it harder for your opponent to adapt to your style, keeping them guessing and on their toes,” says Ali. An important thing that the Brothers have learned is that they are constant students as much as they are trainers. They believe that the only way to improve in this sport
16
POWERUP | NOVEMBER 2017
is to enhance the mind, and that studying and repetition is the best way to do so. This creates a passion and hunger to further explore the sport, meet fighters, travel and learn first-hand because there is always something to work on; this creates a constant growth and development in a fighter and trainer.
THE INSPIRATION Trained and certified by Coach Rick who has trained talented fighters like Naseem Hameed, Amir Khan and other famous celebrities, the brothers’ trainer, Coach Rick, has mastered mittwork and the art of countering. Also known for studying Mayweather’s training style intensively, his passionate coaching and analysis are what inspired and boomeranged the the Brothers to teach, coach and inspire other Mitt trainers to
get certified as well.
THE MITTWORK MASTERY What makes Mittwork special is the technique applied and the science behind it; the Brothers’ Mittwork is specialized in developing faster reflexes which becomes a reaction instead of a thought process followed by reaction. Now a reflex action; as much as you need to train the body, you need to train the mind.

NUTRITION
HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT IN EATING MORE, NOT LESS HAVING BEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW, I’VE HEARD A LOT OF THINGS REGARDING EATING AND DIETS ,MOSTLY FOR THE PURPOSE OF LOSING WEIGHT. THE MOST COMMON ONES I’VE HEARD WAS THAT THEY’RE EATING TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY TO LOSE WEIGHT, OR EVEN LESS. (BECAUSE LITTLE CALORIES MEAN NO EXTRA FAT RIGHT?) WRONG.
L
osing weight is easy. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not quick. It takes dedication and commitment to the goals you set out for yourself, and it takes a bit of sacrifice, but it’s worth it, and it is easy if you commit. You get to eat more regularly and see results. Pretty decent trade if you ask me.
HOW TO “EAT HEALTHY”
Let’s start with diet. Plain and simple “eat healthy”. What does “healthy” translate to? Eat natural. If it comes in a bag, can or has a food label on it, you might want to stay away. ‘Eat vegetables and meats, nuts and seeds, some fruits, little starch and no sugar.’ These were the words from the CEO of CrossFit, Greg Glassman, and I think he said it pretty well.
WHEN TO EAT
Another component to diet is how regularly we should eat. Three times a

day is not enough. Having these long hours of no eating in between our meals causes our body to go into a starvation mode. Our metabolism slows down and the body stores all excess food as fat to use it for later. If we eat more regularly, like six times a day or every 2-3 hours (making our portions smaller and the frequency of our portions more) our body will start to burn off the fat and food it doesn’t need.
This basic diet plan with a good training program can almost ensure any fitness goal you set out for yourself.
WHAT TO EAT

KITEBOARDING
3 THINGS EVERY KITEBOARDER BEGINNER NEEDS TO KNOW That’s it - you’re taking the plunge and going to learn to kite! It’s an exciting time with so much to learn. So, where do you start? What do you need to know before you take the plunge (so to speak) and get on your way to becoming a kiteboarder?
K
iteboarding (commonly referred to as kite boarding, sky boarding, and kitesurfing) is an adventure watersport consisting of using a large steerable kite to pull yourself around on a board on top of the water. The kites are controlled through the bar and lines that connect to your harness, which is worn around your midsection. The kite can be flown specific patterns to
generate power, and can even be used to jump high in the air. And when we say jump, we really mean it. Professional kiteboarders can jump 50 or 60 feet high and can easily float for hundreds of feet when the conditions are right. That's nearly 10 seconds of air time!
FOR MORE INFORMATION Beach Culture Bahrain /Beach Culture Bahrain @beachculture
DO I N E E D TO TAK E L E S S ON S? This is probably the first thing that will be on your mind. Do I really need lessons to fly a kite and ride a board? The answer is absolutely. Not only is kiteboarding MUCH safer if you take lessons from the beginning, but you are looking at a progression time that literally can be more than halved.
H OW LON G DOE S I T TAK E TO LE ARN? We hear this all the time: “I’m not very active, never skied, surfed, played other sports etc.” This doesn’t matter. Fortunately by choosing kiting you are getting into a sport that has a very steep learning curve. With the proper instruction and equipment you can expect to see great results after just a few days under a kite. Typical learning time to get up to your first rides vary from a few hours (for people converting from other water sports) to just a few days.
G E AR – WH AT ’ S RIG H T F OR ME? Kites: The key things for a beginner to look for are simplicity, re-launch and wind range. Most beginners are not going to want to bet the farm on their new found sport so buying one kite with lots of range is a great plan to start with. As you progress, adding kites to the quiver to get out more will mean many more hours on the water. Water re-launch will be very important as this will make every session hassle free and mean that crashing is not an issue. Kiteboards: The important data that you need when sizing a board is your weight and skill level. If you are fresh to kiting you will need to get a larger board than your eventual size. This will give you more planning area and keep you going between lulls. Making new riders everyday, take notes from Beach Culture! Check out their kiteboarding lessons and camps and learn from the Pros.

EXTREME BOARDSPORTS IN BAHRAIN As the summer heat dies off and you are looking to make the most of the pleasant temperatures and get active outside, try kitesurfing or wakeboarding! Maybe even both!
3 FUN FACTS ABOUT WAKEBOARDING It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques. The rider is usually towed behind a motorboat, depending on the board size, rider’s weight, type of tricks, and rider’s comfort speed. The term “wakeboarding” was coined by Paul Fraser (Vancouver, Canada), along with his brother Murray and a pro snowboarder they sponsored.
3 FUN FACTS ABOUT KITEBOARDING Kiteboarding utilizes a regular surfboard, a kite as a sail, and a whole lot of your core muscles. It’s a mixture of windsurfing and wakeboarding, only with a kite in the air – like parasailing, only you balance on an actual surfboard. Kiteboarding gained popularity in the 1990s, but kitesailing has been around since the 1400s, when folks in China used kites to boost their canoes to get across the water. Today, over 1 million athletes around the world call themselves kitesurfers. There are many different styles of kitesurfing, from racing to jumping to freestyle. Freestyle kiteboarding focuses on catching air, while wave-riding is more like regular surfing. Special boards are used for racing, allowing kiteboarders to continuously travel over 1,000 feet. While both kitesurfing and wakeboarding are classified as extreme sports they have a very low barrier to entry so anybody from ages 6 to 80 can give it a try, all you have to do is be comfortable in the water. Then if extreme is your thing you can push yourself and the kit to the limit and fly through the air, even upside down after only a few hours of training, all in the safe knowledge of a reasonably soft landing back on the water
WAKEBOARDING
With wakeboarding, you stand upright on a board behind a boat with the aim of using the wake (the wave the boat makes) as a ramp to launch you into the air. It was invented in 1985 as a mixture between waterskiing and surfing but quickly developed a life and culture of its own. Super easy to learn, most people can stand up in their first 20 minute lesson and then improve every time they practice on the water.
KITESURFING
Kitesurfing is standing up on a board while using a kite to harness the power of the wind to pull you along. While the idea of using kites for transportation has been around since the 1800s and people have experimented with it ever since, kitesurfing only really became mainstream in 1999 when a few windsurf manufactures starting building and developing kites. The young
age of the sport means people are still innovating and finding different uses for kites from big wave surfing, racing, hydrofoiling to wakestyle tricks stolen directly from wakeboarding. As you are controlling your own power source as well as the board, kitesurfing takes a bit longer to master, in 8-10 hours you will have enough control to head out on the water with your own kit and practice. The similarities between the kitesurfing and wakeboarding mean there is a great deal of crossover especially in the board design and the way you control them, meaning if you are out on the water wakeboarding you will feel the improvement when you do the next kitesurf and vice versa. In that way, if there is no wind, you can go wakeboarding and if it is windy (windspeed around 30kph) you can go kitesurfing.

PROTEIN POWER Protein has made its place as the most common talk-of-the-town in the health and fitness community. From bodybuilders to their protein shakes, and dieters munching down their protein bars, what really is the hype with protein?
A real buzz word in the health and fitness industry, we are only just realising how important protein is for the diet in terms of building muscle and losing fat. Keeping this in mind, it is important to always base your meals and snacks with protein in mind, making sure that you have a quality source in every meal you have, for example eggs, grilled chicken or fish, or Greek yogurt. In addition to your protein
base, also fill up on lots of green vegetables because they are extremely low in calories whilst being dense in nutrients, so this helps to keep you fuller for longer. Finally, avoid 'processed' carbohydrates such as white bread and white rice, instead opting for whole grain versions, such as oats, quinoa, and whole grain rice, as they are full of vitamins! Control your food portions by choosing a smaller
plate! This trick is used by restaurants that serve buffets to trick the brain into thinking it's eaten more than it has. You can also load up 1/2 your plate with veggies, as these are low in calories but full of fibre and water which will help to keep you full. A great alternative to rice is cauliflower rice! You simply blitz the cauliflower in a food processor, and then cover and microwave for about 3-5

That first lap I ran faster than I should normally, but I wanted to catch him and then I survived the last 3 or 4 kilometers. It was enough.
n the 9th of September, Daniela Ryf made history by becoming the first female to win an Ironman 70.3 world championship three times. The Swiss speedster in racing red had shaken off the injury that plagued her early season, and was in a class of her own throughout the race. After exiting the water in sixth place a minute back from the front, she took charge on Chattanooga’s hilly bike course. With a six-minute lead by the finish, her win was never in doubt. “It’s very special. It was not an easy year and to come back like this, it means a lot and I’m very happy,” said Ryf. “It was one of those races you wish to have at a world championship. It was not all perfect, I actually lost my nutrition after 5K on the bike and I really struggled to get energy. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it to the finish line so I grabbed everything I could on the aid stations. I’m really happy I could show such a great performance.” After struggling at last year’s world championship on the Sunshine Coast and clawing her way back during the race to finish fourth, Ryf felt motivated to train harder. “This year I really tried to take the good energy with me into the race. I feel very happy to take the win, but it was a hard race. I had to really give it my best and I knew that was needed to be able to win today.” The Sunday men’s race was a closer one with Javier Gomez exiting the water
and getting off the bike second to Ben Kanute, with the rest of the field in a distant chase group. However, the fivetime ITU world champion’s run was his strength; Gomez put on the afterburners to take his second Ironman 70.3 world championship. “It was a tough race and Ben did an amazing bike and I had to take my risks on the run,” said Gomez, who missed last year’s race due to injury. “That first lap I ran faster than I should normally, but I wanted to catch him and then I survived the last 3 or 4 kilometers. It was enough. I’m really proud and happy.” The Spaniard took the lead in the race with only five miles to go, then surged ahead to gap the American by two minutes at the finish. “I just went for it from the beginning. I didn’t think too much, I just tried to find a hard pace that I felt I could keep for the whole race. When I eventually caught him, I didn’t have much left, but luckily it was enough to pass him and take the win.” Both Ryf and Gomez are in the running to win the Nasser Bin Hamad Triple Crown series, set to award a bonus of one million dollars apiece to the athletes who win three races: Ironman 70.3 Dubai, the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, and the Ironman 70.3 Middle East Championship. With the two athletes having ticked off their first two titles this year, all eyes will be on their performance in Bahrain in December.

How would you describe your transition from swimming to triathlon?
Triathlon, for me, is like learning to love something again for the first time. I feel there is always room for improvement and you are always learning. The routes always change and you never know where you will go next.
I’ve been swimming since the age of 6, and have only been recently introduced to triathlon. I decided to switch and give it a try. I have never done IRONMAN, so this will be my first time! Dr. Saqer encouraged me to give triathlon a try and I am only just starting to enjoy it! Cycling is a challenge for me, as I have never ridden a bike competitively before. You have to get used to the clip-ons, and I even fell a couple of times. Hearing all the stories about people driving on the road, there is a fear of crashing into cars, but I welcome the challenge. Every day is a different set of training so you’re not doing the same training on repeat. It’s a new kind of challenge and that’s my exact athletic pathway. I’m learning.
You’ve studied Sports Management from the George Washington University, what can you say about this pursuit? Sports has always been my career, as I’ve studied finance and sports management from the George Washington University, and I have chosen to follow through with my knowledge and passion for it. From working with Challenge Bahrain in its first year and organizing the event, I have started working with the charity. On the side, I am one of the co-founders for Boost Bahrain so we constantly try to create different events to encourage the population to lead a healthier lifestyle. We felt there are some competitions here but they are more on the competitive side, so we do a bit of fun and try to mix that in. We try to cater to different people and not just a competitive side.
How did your life into sports begin? I started off with my parents encouraging me to try different things; swimming, basketball, all kinds of different sports in school. However, it was swimming that I truly followed through with until now, and through it, I received a lot of opportunities to meet new people and travel the world with the Bahrain National Team. This amazing opportunity made me fortunate enough to participate in two Olympic games for swimming and after, different world championships. It
was the sport I enjoyed the most, and my parents made me reconsider and encouraged me to stay with it.
What other sports have you once considered pursuing? I have thought about trying other sports, but not on a competitive level. At one point i was interested in tennis, taking a couple of lessons but I never continued. I like to try different sports, so when I was living in Dubai, I tried gymnastic classes for a bit, but I never stuck with it, Crossfit as well. In the end, I chose swimming, and now I really enjoy triathlon. and I think triathlon is a sport you can do your whole life. You see people in the western world that are 60 and 70 people that are still participating in it.
What do you love best about triathlon? What I like best about triathlon is it doesn’t limit you. With competitive swimming, people tend to leave the sport at the age of 25-26 because there are new competitors who are much younger, whereas in triathlon you’re always growing and always improving. It’s not about winning first, it’s about finishing the race. It’s a great experience and the community is very friendly and nice. Everybody is really encouraging you to be better.
As a former participant in the Olympics, how would you describe your experience? The first time I went to the Olympics, I was only 14 years old. At such a young age it was a great opportunity for me to represent Bahrain in an Olympic sport. Being there was remarkable, but also overwhelming as it was the first time I raced in front of thousands of people. I hope more women get encouraged to go for these competitive sports because there are opportunities for them to represent Bahrain in international competitions. After that, I competed again in the 2008 Olympics but I was unable to qualify. If I do go again to the Olympics, I would like to qualify specially for triathlon, as it’s completely different and much more difficult to be able to qualify for than with swimming.

How is your journey into triathlon so far?
Triathlon, for me, is like learning to love something again for the first time. I feel there is always room for improvement and you are always learning. The routes always change and you never know where you will go next. I’m still training and participating in more of the Asian and Arab competitions. Recently I was invited to participate in the Super League so by far, that was kind of the biggest competition I’ve participated in for triathlon. Even though I placed best in 20 for females in the world, it was one of the most difficult competitions I’ve ever raced in, but it was a great experience. I learned a lot from the other girls and their racing style. I always knew they were fast, but when you race with them, they’re 10 times faster than you expect!
What words of advice can you give to beginners of triathlon? I hope you do not get intimidated with the sport the same way I did. I knew how to swim, but I didn’t know how to bike, and I wasn’t a very good runner! I was very intimidated and it took a lot of people to get me into the sport. I hope that more people get encouraged to join, as it is a great experience and is not as difficult as it seems. When you train, you get a workout out of it, you meet a lot of people and you also get to travel!
How would you describe your experience with the Super League? The community in the Super League was extremely supportive. Even though I felt like I was the last one in the race, I heard people shouting my name and

encouraging me to finish. In the end, it’s more about starting and finishing the race than just competition. That’s the nice thing about triathlon, it’s a sport you can do your whole life. You are not limited to a certain age until it fades out, as it’s a sport that constantly grows with you and encourages you to live a healthy lifestyle. You see people of all ages and sizes participating, and the fact that IRONMAN is happening in Bahrain right now is encouraging many people to start joining. People who have not participated in any competitions before want to be the next IRONMAN, which is absolutely amazing. Seeing how far we’ve come and how many people are doing triathlon shows amazing promise. Even before when I was in the swim team, women avoided the
sport because of the attire and various other reasons, but with triathlon it’s a totally different mentality. You see mothers encouraging their little girls to join, and you can see a lot of female participation which is a beautiful thing.
As you say you are joining IRONMAN Bahrain 70.3 this year, how are you feeling? I’m excited, i’m nervous, and i’ve never run a 25-kilometer before! This will officially be my first time running this! It’s really interesting, and I don’t know what to expect because with this kind of race, you won’t know until you do it! I’ve been training for 3 years but I’ve only been attempting the sprint and Olympic distance. I’ve never done the halfIRONMAN, but at this point,
I feel a bit more confident. I feel I have trained to a level where I feel like I could finish it. Hopefully, we’ll see on November 25th!
What would you like to say about the growth of triathlon in the Kingdom of Bahrain?
I hope there are more people, especially more women who join the sport! It’s a wonderful community and it’s a sport that lasts with you forever. I really hope the enthusiasm and excitement for the sport keeps building because even now when you go to Zallaq you see people exercising, not just training for competitive sports. Fitness has become a trend! In this regard, I hope we get to witness the sport expand year by year and keep growing.

How does it feel to win two Podiums in your very first year since the formation of Team Bahrain Merida? This has been an incredible goal that the team have accomplished, and we are all very pleased with these two results. This year there were only two teams in the world to reach such a goal, and that was ourselves and Team Sky, and this has only been possible thanks to all our sponsors, especially those of Bahrain and Merida and of course to His Highness Shaikh Nasser for always been there for us, as well as the incredible hard work of the riders, operational staff, training staff, medical staff, technical staff and management and everyone else involved in the project, and obviously the exceptional

dedication and sacrifices made by Vincenzo Nibali to help us reach this.
Aside from having a strong roster of cyclists, introducing a new team to the world involves a lot of work. Was it easy for the public to embrace Team Bahrain Merida? What challenges did you
encounter in promoting the team? Starting a new project in a very traditional sport is never easy, the biggest obstacle to overcome was to convince the riders and their agents to sign up for a new and exciting project. The critics were many, and a lot of people looked at it negatively. However having Vincenzo Nibali on the team as ambassador at its’ core, as well as the support of Alex Carera,
together, they both brought the first step of security to the team. The decision for Merida to become the new main partner was a huge boost of confidence, as well as the introduction of all our technical sponsors such as Sportful clothing, Rudy Project helmets and glasses, Sidi shoes, and all our other sponsors we were able to get together. Last but not least, when the world realized that the main person behind the project was Shaikh Nasser;
what he represents and the enthusiastic sportsperson he is, the ideas, goals and ambitions he had for the future of the project and where he wanted to promote the well-being of all this; gave a truly final boost of confidence to all to come aboard and join the team. From there onwards it was just a matter of organization and putting the puzzle together, which Milan Erzen has been the incredible mastermind behind it all.

CYCLING
What do you feel was the most intense race of 2017, by far? The most intense race was for sure the Giro d’Italia. We had planned so meticulously to get to this race in a perfect condition, both on a media level as well as on the training level and condition of the riders. To think that six months before the Giro we didn’t even have the teams’ warehouse ready yet we had planned to be the best in the world at the event. The pressure on us was high, the curiosity of the cycling world all had their eyes on us, and for this reason, the result that Vincenzo brought home was even more significant than anyone can imagine as he had the responsibility of the whole team on his shoulders. To bring home a result like that with the pressure and responsibility, that can only be done by a champion such as himself.
Looking back, do you think there could have been any improvements on some races like the Giro D’Italia and the main races in particular? Giro was also the most important race for Vincenzo this year, what can you say about his performance and what do you think the team is lacking to improve in 2018? I honestly feel that if we had not lost so many riders during the season due to injury and illness, we could have definitely attained better results, but that is the sport of cycling, and we cannot change the unfortunate part of this sport. Just think if we had Ramunas Navardauskas at the Giro in top shape, it might have changed the tactics a lot, and if we had Siutsou and Izaguirre both in
38
POWERUP | NOVEMBER 2017
top shape at the Vuelta, I think we could have given Team Sky a bigger risk than anyone else had done. The same goes for Izaguirre’s accident at the Tour de France. If you
“The thing is, you don’t tell other people your dreams, you keep it to yourself and when that dream eventually comes true, you show them.” think about it, we rode all three grand tours with only eight riders compared to our competitors with nine riders as we lost one rider on the opening stages of each grand tour. This was due mostly to accidents and injury so if there was anything we could have changed it would have been the loss of many important riders.
What were your personal
favourite routes in 2017 so far? My favorite race is the Tour of Lombardia as it is raced in my hometown, and the races are set during the beautiful period of Autumn in Italy when the colors all change and the leaves start to fall from the trees. This atmosphere creates a perfect setting for a perfect race route, and since it’s at the end of the season, you can see the true potential of the riders who have lasted all year, so the atmosphere is incredible. However, I also enjoy the races up North in Belgium as they have a certain fascination as well.
Sonny Colbrelli won several Podiums this year and seems to be the strongest in the team. How do you
think he and the other riders did at the UCI Road World Championships? Sonny is a true talent and has a lot of margin for improvement, but he will surely step things up in 2018. I see him with a completely different confidence in the way he approaches and prepares for the races he has set goals on.
Every Podium win is backed by a focused team doing their best to help their team leader to victory. How did the team support their team leaders this year and what do you expect from them in the next season?
CYCLING
The team was fantastic this year. For every main event, we achieved our goal and did well, except for the Tour de France, as this is exactly what happens when the team loses its captain. Izaguirre crashed on the first opening Time Trial and was hospitalized with a broken back. Once this happened, the riders didn’t have their goals straight, and it changed the situation in the way of confusion. By the time the riders knew what had happened, a few stages had gone, and the fatigue had already started. It is exactly for this reason why a captain is so important in cycling; a captain such as Vincenzo can create a group around him that will work toward the same goal. Next year we plan to work on this with the captains and the other riders, through setting out the goals and ambitions of the team for 2018, helping us change our approach for the new season.
What is your overall assessment of the team’s performance this year? The total assessment of the year has been very positive; there has never been a team in the history of cycling that was able to obtain these goals in there first year of existence, this makes us very proud and pleased with the hard effort put in by everyone. Obviously, we at Bahrain Merida won’t stop here, and we will keep striving to do better and looking for improvements in the future and for this reason we will never slow down and take much time off as we have to constantly stay on top of things especially if you want to compete with the best as this is important for our partners, sponsors and ourselves. Without the satisfaction of reaching your goals, the passion will slowly go away.
Will 2018 be Bahrain Merida’s year to attain
three Grand Tour Podiums? This is a difficult question to answer, as it is never an easy task to get three podium places in all three grand tours, however with the team roster we have put together we will definitely see what can be done. What is important is to continue creating a team that is well-organized and creates an important image for our partners and in particular for Shaikh Nasser. We want the country of Bahrain to be proud of what we are doing with their name on our shoulder, and we will continue to strive to do the best in every competition, no matter how big or how small it is.
Can we look forward to Bahrain Merida having the same roster for 2018? The team roster has changed with the inclusion of 6 top riders. We are very excited to be working with the riders we have brought on board, and we will have top athletes such as Pozzovivo,
Izaguirre Gokra (brother of Izaguirre Ion), Mohoric who is one of the top young riders who we are expecting to surprise the world of cycling next year, then we have Padun who finished 5th at the Giro d’Italia for under 23 this year, as well as a rider who comes from the MTB world by the name of Pernsteiner. Last but not least we have the rider by the name of Karen who was brought onto the team to help and support Colbrelli. On top of this, we have also included a few quality persons in the team staff roster such as a dietician and a top experienced Sports Director, so we are very much looking forward to an exciting 2018. We are continuously working with the Bahrain cycling federation and doing various training tests on the athletes in Bahrain as one of our main goals is to find a Bahraini cyclist who will join the team in the very near future, this will surely bring a lot of satisfaction to all involved.

SPORTS & BEYOND
FEEDING OUR CURIOSITY THIS MONTH I WILL RAISE MORE QUESTIONS IN MY ARTICLE THAN ACTUALLY FIND ANSWERS OR SOLUTIONS. YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS INFORMATION BECAUSE EVERYTHING YOU DO FROM NOW ONWARDS IN SPORTS IS GOING TO BE WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION. YOU CAN KNOW IT, ASK QUESTIONS AROUND IT, BUILD ON IT, OR GO ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ANSWERS ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE SPORTS DISCIPLINE THAT YOU LIKE
A
research conducted in 2015 about the sports and events industries in the Middle East and North Africa by Repucom gave us tremendous insights about the sports sector in the region we live in. Without any surprises or contest, this region to Football crazy! The study showed that in all 17 countries where the survey was done, nothing came into close rivalry to both the size of participation and following to Football. The region has over 500 professional football teams and interests in domestic competition prevails in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. So, let us keep this to rest for now and talk about other important details. The research has divided as you can see above the sport industry size into following versus participation. Not surprisingly they both are actually different. If we discount Football, the top 5 sports in terms of following are Basketball, and then Motorsports, volleyball, athletics, and finally handball. Now maybe in your own country things
40

are slightly different, but keep in mind that this information is for the Middle East and North Africa region as a sum. I honestly did not think that motorsports would surpass all other sports, except of course football and basketball. What about in terms of participation? Well, here is where it gets interesting. Basketball also comes on top, followed by volleyball, and then athletics, golf, and cycling. I know, this doesn’t make sense at all, however, this information does not refer to competitive sports, but simply reflecting the activity that an average person in those 17 countries would do. It is interesting as well to see the potential of motorsports, that interest is there, but access to it is not. Maybe something to invest in for the future. The sports industry in this region employs around 1percent of the total workforce but uses only 0.45 percent of the total GDP. When looking closely into the key barriers for the development of sports industry according to the industry experts done through an online

survey the ‘lack of funding’ is actually the third most agreeable on factor that hinders growth in this discipline. This is somewhat a very important point for us all to recognize and build on. Even if you were asked about why you’re doing less at your work you will most likely answer that there is not enough funding. However, in sports, the number one seen barrier is the lack of trained/ skilled human capital! Along these lines as well, the number two barrier is the lack of understanding of opportunities, and what came up last at number 5 was lack of infrastructure. Many questions here we need to ask ourselves to move forward, main about killing the myth surrounding lack of funding and availability of proper infrastructure. So, if you’re in sports management, the next time you want to strategize, don’t forget that most likely the problem may be in the ‘we’ rather than in the ‘them’ because ‘we’ are not using our knowledge properly.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
IN THE RING With players representing the country nationally and internationally the Al Doy Sports Centre’s students have achieved medals on world class levels. Before every strong tree, lie equally strong roots. Likewise with the Aldoy Sports Centre, Coach Abdulla’s roots lie strong enough to match his passion in teaching the wonderful world of MMA!
C
oach Abdulla Al Doy’s journey with martial arts begun when he started practicing more than one martial art that included a combination of japanese karate, korean taekwondo and boxing besides many others as a kid until adulthood. For self-defense purposes initially, he grew to love participating in competitions and championships. This passion for martial arts in all its forms pushed and encouraged him to start a business on them, opening his own martial arts school in September 1992, and giving birth to one of the first martial arts and fitness centres in the Kingdom of Bahrain, that is the Aldoy Sports Centre.
THE GROWTH OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS The fastest growing sport of our time, Coach Abdulla expresses why he chose MMA over all other martial arts. For this amazing growth, he thanks the hard work done by His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the KHK and BRAVE organization towards the MMA. “Our country has become the Mecca of MMA and MMA lovers for both

amateurs and professionals. It is an honor to be proud of having the world MMA championship held in our country in November not to mention another exciting round of BRAVE event coming very soon. This is all a very beautiful and heartwarming thing because it makes all the eyes turn towards our beloved Bahrain. It makes me so proud as a Bahraini to see the name of my country make a huge positive change in the world of combat sports.”
FROM MASTER TO STUDENT “My first taekwondo coach and master, Nadeem Esfahani, is my ultimate motivation,” Coach Abdulla says. From always pushing him to be better, encouraging him to do and show his best, and to be unafraid of showing his potentials and what he can do. One of the major things that his Coach taught him that has stayed with him until now was giving 110 percent in dedicating time and effort to a certain matter, because 100 percent is never enough. Loyalty, being another thing that he has learnt from him, Coach Abdulla believes that, “To be loyal is the greatest form of being thankful.”
It makes me so proud as a Bahraini to see the name of my country make a huge positive change in the world of combat sports. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SPORTS CENTRE Coach Abdulla opened the doors to the Al Doy Sports Centre in 1992, the first sports centre in Bahrain. Thanks to the suggestion of his Korean coach in the Bahrain Military Team, the late master Park Jong Wan, encouraged Abdulla on the Sports Centre’s establishment and gave him huge support in its early months. His passion for teaching the youth were
a huge inspiration as well, as he felt the need to share his experience learnt over the years. With the people around him starting from young girls and boys all the way to adults in their different ages, he claims “It doesn’t matter even if they are 100 years old I want to train them as long as they have the energy and love to learn.”

MOTORING
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Born in America but living in China for 7 years, Talal Beshara loved to kart. Every week since he was 8, he practiced his passion and had dreams of one day joining the Formula 1. After attaining his first go-kart at the age of 12, his win at the age of 15 set his path onto racing. Talal’s young age and passion garnered attention on his first season, and after earning his fastest lap time on his second season, Bahrain chose him to represent the nation.
THE START TO SOMETHING GREAT Joining the Commission Internationale de Karting Academy (CIKFIA), Talal held no expectations. In spite of that, he made it to the finals as the only participant in the Middle East! On his third season in Bahrain, he won his first race, and soon after, he joined the renown team Formula Gilles in Belgium. In 2017, he won the junior championship in the Bahrain Rotax Mojo Max, beating seniors in qualifying making his whole family and Bahrain proud.
THE CHALLENGING ROAD TO F4 With the exposure he received from his triumphant wins, he garnered a great deal of sponsors to support his dream to pursue the F1. With plans to start with the F4 championship, he took a lot of advice from his supportive elder brother, Abdulla, who shares a similar passion for the support, and gained experience from his fellow drivers. In doing a total of 194 laps for training, he found endurance a huge challenge, but his efforts paid off and even did faster time than more experienced drivers! Come race day, he was unable to place top three, but made it to top six, earning the praise of his country. As Talal says, “The support from Bahrain was amazing!”
THE SECRET Although already competing internationally, Talal still has to study along with his peers, but still manages to keep up with school, making his family extremely proud. While his journey seems like a long way to go from his dream to race in the F1,
Talal believes in slow but sure growth and experience, the first step being the F4. From there, he plans to progress his way up to F3, F2 then onto F1. Apart from his ambitious
dream, he also considers endurance racing as well! The road is literally endless for the talented young man, and until he reaches his goal, all eyes from Bahrain will follow his progress.

CROSSFIT VS BOOTCAMPS When you think ‘Bootcamp’ some of you probably see a drill sergeant shouting insults at a group of recruits doing pushups in the mud. Whereas Crossfit is a paleo-eating cult, where vomiting after a workout will earn you a badge of honour, and good form is inconsequential. You’d be wrong on both accounts, though I won’t deny the claims are not completely unsubstantiated. CROSSFIT
BOOTCAMP

WELLNESS
BACK TO ASANAS Back pains, we all experience it. As common as it is, it is a remediable discomfort, and what better way to treat it than with some well-chosen asanas. Let’s hear it from the expert!
DR. SHRIMURTI
Certified yoga therapy teacher and homeopathy doctor at 136.1 Yoga Studio Bahrain Amwaj
GENERAL CAUSES OF BACK PAIN
Muscular knots can occur anywhere in the body because of stress and anxiety, tightness of the neck as cervical spondylitis, the face as neuralgia, and muscular backache etc. The aim of asana is to release these knots. Asanas release mental tensions by dealing with them on the physical level, acting somato-psychically, through the body to the mind.
SPRAINS
FRACTURES
OSTEOARTHRITIS
HERNIATED DISC
OBESITY
FIBROMYALGIA
PREGNANCY
SLEEPING POSITIONS
BAD POSTURE
STRESS AND ANXIETY
A well-chosen set of asanas combined with pranayama, Shatkarmas (body cleansing -detox), meditation and yoga nidra, is most effective in eliminating these knots, tackling them from both the mental and muscular (physical) levels. The result is the release of dormant energy and the body becomes full of vitality and strength, the mind that becomes light, creative, joyful and balanced.
SEVERAL YOGA TIPS FOR BACK PAIN Gentle Stretching Asana Stretch the spine and spinal muscles and open the blockages and muscular knots from spinal muscles with gentle yogasanas.
Backward-Bending Asana Recent research has shown that 90% of backache has originated from muscular imbalance. If these imbalances are prolonged then the ‘stack pile’ of the vertebral column is misaligned, the ligaments are strained and symptoms of spondylitis, slipped disc, sciatica and osteoarthritis begin to manifest. The
58
POWERUP | NOVEMBER 2017
practice of backward bending asanas can correct postural defects and neuromuscular imbalances of the vertebral column. The spinal nerves, which emerge from between the adjoining vertebrae, are also toned.
and rejuvenates the tissues generally. On the emotional and psychic levels, controlled twisting represents a means of managing the knots and problems of life.
Twisting Asanas
Constant postural abnormalities put excess strain on the muscles of the back which hardly receive proper relaxation in the conventional supine position. Therefore certain relaxation practices which are done in the prone position are very soothing to the spine and related structures. Especially recommended for any back/spinal problem, these postures can be adopted during any time of the day for any comfortable duration.
The twist imposed on the spine and the whole trunk exercises the muscles, makes the spinal column more flexible and stimulates the spinal nerves. Most of the spinal twist asanas enhance the pranic flow in the samana energy region, around the navel. This nourishes organs such as the pancreas, kidneys, stomach, small intestines, liver and gall bladder, relieves associated disorders
Relaxing Asanas
They can be combined with relaxing daily activities as well.
Breathing Exercises Rhythmic, deep and slow respiration stimulates and isstimulated by calm, content states of mind. Irregular breathing disrupts the rhythms of the brain and leads to physical, emotional and mental blocks. These, in turn, lead to inner conflict, imbalanced personality, disordered lifestyle and disease. FOR MORE INFORMATION 136.1 Yoga Studio Amwaj, Bahrain Tel: +973 33491718

PHYSIO FUNDAMENTALS When the idea of Physiotherapy comes to mind, the main factor we assume is the treatment of physical injuries. Yet what we don’t suspect, is that physiotherapy is so much more. Generally known, physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. From personal experience it goes just a little bit deeper than that, physiotherapy should have a more holistic approach when it comes to treating a patient with a certain condition, as the patient is assessed and treated mentally, emotionally and physically.
BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY Aside from addressing a wide range of conditions such as orthopaedic, neurological and cardiopulmonary conditions, Physiotherapy improves strength, range of motion, endurance, corrects postural imbalances, improves muscle synergy releases facial restriction and trigger points.
ADDRESSING MENTAL HEALTH THROUGH PHYSIOTHERAPY Most patients come into the clinic with some frustration and in some cases a degree of depression due to the
injury and how it affected their daily activities. So when physiotherapists align and fix an issue, the patient gradually returns to his/her lifestyle and in most cases much stronger. That by itself is a miracle, and definitely gives a tremendous mental boost and confidence.
BENEFITS TO ATHLETES Seeing that most physiotherapy patients are athletes, it can be said with full confidence that physiotherapy helps athletes the most. It works as both a maintenance program to keep their muscles working with proper synergy and optimal strength and as the first line of recovery after a serious field or gym injury.
JENAN PHYSIOTHERAPY Jenan Physiotherapy approaches their patients as cases that need deciphering, especially on consultation days. Assessing, analysing, breaking down and putting back a case together is a skill not everyone can master. They believe a holistic approach is the way to go, so in treating the culprit of the illness or disability and not the symptom, that always give the best of results. ALLEVIATING THE SMALL PAINS Lifestyle and postural habits are key, whether it’s during the day or at night, a correct posture plays an important role towards maintaining musculoskeletal health and alignment. And like they always say prevention is always better than cure! Include yoga in your life. Go to the gym regularly. Keep a balanced diet. Aside from daily activities, maintaining your posture by having the proper medical pillow and mattresses is as important. It’s a 24-hour job!
PHYSIOTHERAPY MYTHS! Physiotherapists only do massages
You can only see a physiotherapist after seeing a physician
Physiotherapists only teach the patients exercise then send them home to do them

Physical therapy treatments are painful
Those are the common myths that the patients usually circulate, but among physiotherapists themselves, there is a misconception where the therapist only treats the affected area, and they neglect the rest of the body. Where in reality our body works like a well-oiled machine where all parts are essential to recovery.

CLEANSING DONE RIGHT The latest in innovative laser treatments that utilize focused light beams to treat skin imperfections, has come to town. Introducing, the Carbon Laser Peel! The revolutionary laser treatment of Carbon Peeling is a completely painless procedure with minimalto-zero downtime. It is highly beneficial for people with oily skin, blackheads, enlarged pores, dull skin, and acne on the face or body. It is also an excellent way to exfoliate and refresh your skin, providing an instant refreshed appearance and leaving skin feeling softer, smoother and firmer.
A layer of liquid carbon is applied to the skin which the laser light is highly attracted to and targets to destroy it, taking dead skin cells away. The Peel works to restore skin balance whilst promoting a fresh and even glow. As the treated skin regenerates, the appearance of uneven spots and pigment are visibly less obvious. As with all skin treatments, carbon peels should be supplemented by a good
skin-care routine, and daily use of a high-spectrum sunscreen. Noticeable results can be experienced after a single treatment, but for maximum long-term results we recommend regular treatments.

THE BENEFITS OF CARBON PEEL
CLEANSING
EXFOLIATING
REJUVENATING
Carbon has the ability to absorb oil and contaminants from deep within the pores. When the laser is passed over the treatment area it targets and destroys the carbon particles, taking any absorbed material with it.
As the carbon is targeted by the laser, it blasts away dead skin cells, blackheads and effectively exfoliates the skin. The result is softer, radiant skin with reduced pore size and a more even skin tone.
Carbon peels also target the deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production, which in turn produces firmer, plumper skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and leaves skin feeling tighter and glowing.

THE BARE NECESSITIES DON'T HAVE TIME FOR INTENSIVE SKIN CARE? YOU CAN STILL PAMPER YOURSELF BY ACING THE BASICS. GOOD SKIN CARE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES CAN HELP DELAY THE NATURAL AGING PROCESS AND PREVENT VARIOUS SKIN PROBLEMS.
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WAYS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN IS TO PROTECT IT FROM THE SUN. A LIFETIME OF SUN EXPOSURE CAN CAUSE WRINKLES, AGE SPOTS AND OTHER SKIN PROBLEMS !
Skincare involves more than just cleaning it. It also involves having a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and exercise. Some habits are essential in order to care of your skin and have a radiant complexion all year long. Regardless of your skin type, here are the essential habits! In order to take care of your skin, first and foremost make sure to choose products specially designed for your unique skin type. Dry skin does not have the same needs as oily skin. Some parts of your face (eye contour, lips, etc.) have particularly fine, fragile skin. They need specific care, especially the eye contour and the lips. These areas of your face are more sensitive and deserve special attention. Taking care of sensitive skin begins with makeup removal. In order not to stress your skin and to respect its natural balance, make sure to use a pH-neutral make-up remover, specially formulated to cleanse your epidermis gently. Choose a specific routine for make-up removal in the sensitive eye area as well. Don't neglect the lips. As soon as you feel the need, use a restorative cream for them, and do not hesitate to reapply to this particularly fragile area as often as necessary. Exfoliation is indispensable. Use a suitable exfoliation treatment once or twice a week. It must be effective yet gentle and respectful. Choose a pH-neutral exfoliation product, which is perfect for

moisturizing mask regularly, removing the excess with a spring water spray.
Moisturizing is essential. The dermis is made up of 70% water and the epidermis, 15%. In order to keep the skin well moisturized, it is important to choose daily moisturizing skin care products that balance the level of water within the skin. You may also use a
Watch out for all manners of stress (external and internal). All of these have harmful effects on the skin. Use skincare products to protect your skin against these daily stresses before leaving the house and cleanse your skin thoroughly when you come home in the evening. For the last and easiest, all of us do it everyday.
FOR THE MOST COMPLETE SUN PROTECTION:
Solar filters REGARDLESS OF THE SEASON, CHOOSE DAILY SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT INCLUDE SOLAR FILTERS. THEY REDUCE THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF THE SUN, WHICH ACCELERATES SKIN AGEING.
Seek shade AVOID THE SUN BETWEEN 10 A.M. AND 2 P.M., WHEN THE SUN'S RAYS ARE STRONGEST
USE SUNSCREEN USE A BROAD-SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN WITH AN SPF OF AT LEAST 15. APPLY SUNSCREEN GENEROUSLY, AND REAPPLY EVERY TWO HOURS OR MORE OFTEN IF YOU'RE SWIMMING OR PERSPIRING.
It is only a matter of habit. The key to your beauty before any step first is drinking water. Used by your body to help flush out toxins and waste products, water is extremely significant in clearing up your skin. Likewise, if ample water isn’t drunk everyday, the toxins and bodily wastes will accumulate in the body and become trapped under your skin, the largest organ of your body.

The Chinese Treasure Boat (or Bao-Chuan) was a type of large wooden ship in the fleet of Admiral Zheng He, the renowned explorer and mariner, who led seven incredible voyages during the early 15th-century Ming Dynasty. To accurately portray the appearance of the Zheng He Treasure Boat, Ulysse Nardin called upon its enamel specialists Donzé Cadrans for the intricate enamel cloisonné technique so valued by collectors. In this very ancient art form, which dates back to the early 4th century, craftsmen employ fine gold wire to create the compartments, within which the enamel is carefully deposited. Every cloisonné dial involves immense effort and patience, requiring 50 hours of artisanal expertise and 26 separate processes to bring a scene to vivid life.
