FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS Influencing the GCC and the World

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome ofan effective physical education. In fact, sports have

been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

A heartfelt congratulations to HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa for garnering 2nd place in his age group at the ITU World Triathlon 2016 in Abu Dhabi. Congratulations sir! HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s initiative to promote mixed martial arts in the island has reached fantastic results! Jose “Shorty” Torres from HH’s KHK-MMA team won his first professional mixed martial arts fight against competitor Travis Taylor in Washington! Another fantastic sporting event is due to be launched in Bahrain this month with the arrival of the XDubai Spartan Race at the Bahrain Endurance Village. On April 1, competitors will see themselves crawling, jumping, and sliding through 23 obstacles over 5.3 km. It’s fun for the whole family and even includes a children’s race! This is followed shortly after by the Bahrain Battle of Heroes, an annual crossfit challenge which will be inaugurated on April 8 at Seef Mall. HH Shaikh Nasser is bringing new opportunities and events to the island and PowerUp Magazine is proud to be covering all of it. The Trilife and PowerUp Safe Cycle initiative will be launched sometime this month with our good friends from Trilife taking the lead to make Bahrain a safer area for cyclists and motorists alike. It is awesome to partner up with significant fitness organizations in this island and we are proud to announce our partnership with the Bahrain Road Runners Association. We look forward to an exciting and fruitful year of fun and fitness! In line with all the fitness events happening, PowerUp will be launching some new fitness challenges across the island and we will be doing it in luxurious hotels, sporting venues, and gymnasiums. Watch our Facebook page for further announcements! Our sincere condolences go to the family of Ty Baird, one of the most daring skydivers in the world. He was in Bahrain with Inka Titto at Gravity Indoor Skydiving and the team astounded us with their expertise in the wind tunnel. We were struck by the harmony and absolute happiness of this team. Goodbye Ty! On a lighter note, Anke Brandt broke a new world record for kite surfing kiting an incredible 298 meters from Bahrain to Doha, Qatar over 17 hours! Thank you for choosing Bahrain as the launchpad for your Get Kite mission. This fantastic achievement is made even more wondrous by the fact that this woman does it all to raise money for Wings for Life, a nonprofit organization that seeks to find a cure for spinal cord injury. Good and exciting things are happening all over the island and PowerUp will be there to cover it all!

DARTS This traditional pub game is slowly becoming more popular in Bahrain with the formulation of the Darts League.

D

arts is a form of throwing game in which small missiles are thrown at a circular dartboard fixed to the wall. Though various rules and boards have been used in the past, the term “darts” usually refers to a standardized game involving a specific board design and set of rules. Darts were historically used in warfare in ancient history, its shape and size being similar to miniature javelins. It was the practice of this skill that made this develop into a game. Aref Murad, “the dartsman of Bahrain”, is hoping to reignite the sport by founding the Darts League. The sports-mad Bahraini is the proud owner of Darts Bay in Umm Al Hassam, the only niche darts retail outlet in the Middle East. The store opened on December 2012, after overwhelming requests from his online business www. bahraindarts.com which has been selling darts merchandise since 2009. As Aref says “The website was booming but people wanted something more physical where they could come and see the goods for themselves. We stock a wide range of products for players of 18 | PowerUp | April 2016

all skill levels, from beginners to people who have played all their lives”. What is gratifying for Aref, who has also traveled around the world to play darts, is that hot-shot darts players know him and what he’s trying to do for the island. He met 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, two-time PDC World Darts Champion Adrian Lewis and Paul Nicholson who has heard of him and what he’s trying to do for the local darts scene. Aref says that during the 1980’s and early 1990’s, the sport was very popular in Bahrain and hotels held monthly competitions. In recent years, these events have been few and far between with the majority of the island’s darts action taking place at expat clubs such as the British Club, Rugby Club, and Dilmun Club although interest in the sport has taken off again in recent months. Says Jason Smith, a dart enthusiast “There’s some great dart players in Bahrain and thanks to people like Aref, we have the chance to come together and play”. Aref believes that the reason darts is so popular globally is because it appeals to “the average man in the street. It’s not hugely expensive, it’s accessible, fun, and there’s no age limit”.

EQUIPMENT

A regulation board is 17 ¾ inches (451 mm) in diameter and is divided into 20 radial sections. Each section is separated with metal wire or a thin band of sheet metal. The best dartboards have the thinnest wire, so that the darts have less chances of hitting a wire and bouncing out. The numbers indicating the various scoring sessions of the board are also normally made of wire, especially on tournament quality boards. The wire ring on which the numbers are welded can be turned to facilitate even wear of the board. The “optimal” dartboard penalizes inaccuracy in a player. Illumination should be arranged to brightly illuminate the dartboard and minimize shadows of thrown darts. The main supply for illumination should be protected against accidental piercing, or placed away from the board.

2

DARTS

Initially, the missiles were simply cut down arrows or crossbow bolts. Now plastic darts where the shaft and flight are separate are now used. Modern darts have

SPORTS & FITNESS

four parts: the points, the barrels, the shafts, and the flights. The steel points come in two common lengths, 32 mm and 41 mm and are sometimes knurled or coated to improve grip. Others are designed to retract slightly on impact to lessen the chance of bouncing out. For competitive purposes, a dart cannot weight more than 50g including the shaft and flight and cannot exceed a total length of 300mm.

PLAYING STANDARDS 3

Height- The dart board is hung so that the centre of the bulls eye is five foot eight inches (1.73 mm) from the floor. This is considered eye level for a six-foot man.

BAHRAIN DARTS LEAGUE 2015-16 4

The Bahrain Darts League Season 2015-2016 started on November 2015 and was played every Monday night in different venues sponsored by the teams. The league is in its 3rd season and would like to be known as the most regulated and organized Darts League in the region.

BURPEES

LOVE ‘EM OR HATE ‘EM

HOW TO DO BURPEES

Burpees are becoming a quite popular form of exercise in the island at the moment. The reason being if you can’t do an obstacle in the XDubai Spartan Race, your penalty is 30 burpees. Here we break down how to do burpees right and how to benefit from this exercise.

T

his underrated form of exercise deserves more of an audience. Burpee conditioning will crank up the intensity of your fitness training. Its one of the most efficient, functional exercises you can do. It virtually works every muscle in the body, which means you can burn more calories in a lot less time.

A few minutes of Burpee conditioning will quickly convince you that your own natural bodyweight provides plenty of resistance for an ass-kicking workout that blasts your stamina and fat loss through the roof. It develops strength, explosive power, and anaerobic endurance. Since burpees require nothing more than your own bodyweight, you can

seriously do them anywhere. As a full-body exercise, it is used in strength training and aerobics. The basic movement is performed in four steps and is known as a four-count burpee.

1

Begin in a standing position.

2

Drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground (Count 1).

3

Kick your feet back, while keeping your arms extended, then do a push up (Count 2).

4

Immediately return your feet to the squat position (Count 3).

5

Jump up from the squat position (Count 4).

6

Add a little clap for pizzaz!

Repeat moving as fast as possible. You should maintain a fast pace for this exercise. Strive for maximum height with each jump. Most athletes will average between 12 and 15 repetitions per 30 seconds.

on UFC Fight Pass. Shorty was looking to stand and trade with Taylor but the latter used his reach advantage, circulating and landing some inside leg kicks. Shorty managed to cut the distance, pressuring Taylor against the fence before breaking him down. From there, it was only a matter of time. I felt great in there. I waited patiently for an opening and waited for the finish, Shorty said. The much experienced Torres sank in a ruthless guillotine choke, similar to the choke that won him his second Gold Medal at the Amateur World Championships forcing his opponent to tap. The official time came at 2:09 of the opening round. After a long-awaited debut, the world’s most accomplished amateur mixed martial arts fighter has proven himself in one of the sport’s premier promotions. It was a privilege and

honor to put on a show, Shorty says. He adds It was an awesome experience to walkout for @TitanFighting and get my pro debut repping @KHK_MMA and my supporters. After Mlambo and Gallagher, Torres is now the third Amateur world champion fighting out of KHK MMA to successfully transition to the professional leagues. This is only the start for a talented and dedicated individual like Shorty. After earning his university degree (Leadership and Sports and Exercise Science at McKendree University) and being drafted by HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s team; the KHK prospect is fully devoted to his professional career. Shorty transitioned to the professional Mixed Martial Arts Scene with 25 straight amateur wins, 2 World Championships, and an arsenal of skills that earned him the reputation the “Baddest Amateur on the Planet”. DYNAMIC MOVEMENT TRAINING (DMT)

via 3-dimensional exercise.

The idea behind the Dynamic Movement Training (DMT) is that the body should be able to move within a three-dimensional multi-plane; while maintaining a healthy body and mind with all natural movement patterns.

3. DMT builds energy in day-to-day activity as one becomes stronger and more efficient in movement.

GROUP TRAINING

They say that no man is an island; and it is true that in collaborative work, mankind has achieved so much over the centuries. But can this same mindset be applied to fitness? Read on to find out.

Since the beginning of time, people used to develop their bodies with the purpose of hunting, protecting their clan and surviving. They were faster, stronger, more athletic and leaner; being able to move for more than 5000 meters, sprinting to catch their own food, even building shelters or cutting down trees. For our ancestors, the concept of exercise was completely different as they use it for life. 24 | PowerUp | April 2016

4. It improves functional strength, aerobic endurance and functionality all at the same time.

1. It utilizes the body’s natural movement patterns

5. Due to the demanding nature of DMT style movements, energy expenditure is very high and is therefore great for fat loss.

FREESTYLE GROUP TRAINING (FGT)

everybody will have a range of training options to choose from.

FGT is a 30 minute class which is mainly done with bodyweight as much as with freestyle equipment. This workout program looks for maximum effectiveness, increasing the outcomes of the training with less time expended. It has three different streams specially designed and prepared for all types of people, background and fitness levels, with specific progressions and regressions from every exercise, providing the possibility of progression inside the workout class. These can be classified into High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T), Power and Strength. This way,

These new classes that are starting in every Fitness First Club are headed by qualified and well-trained instructors who will help you improve your overall strength, power, stamina, fitness level and functional activation for the daily lifestyle, just because it recruits the whole body as a machine where every piece counts on a process of evolving the cardiovascular system, as muscular and neural systems (as a synergy of movements) evolving to a whole new level of fitness.

There are five key points in DMT:

FREESTYLE

2. It involves the entire body working together to challenge the person.

The structure of every stream is standard across all gyms. It starts with an introduction of the initial set up, overview, benefits and

safety, progressing to the mobilisers which are four different warm-up exercises as preparation, depending on the stream to be developed. The main part is the workout and concludes with the finisher where a challenge is proposed in

the form of a two-minute continuous workout, moving straight after to the cool down with the transition part with stretches and mobilization action for the main muscles used during the workout.

HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (H.I.I.T.)

This stream delivers a rate of 30 second-workout and 30 second-rest provided in a format of superset training with a moderate amount of load. This workout stream will give everybody a funny and challenging way of fitness progression with only a pair of equipment and short time expenditure.

With a High Intensity Exercise Program we are looking for an improvement of the heart and lung function, burning more calories and torching the fat mass all over your body.

POWER This stream provides an optimal athletic performance as an explosive enhancement, focusing on a short term and heavy work load with longer rest periods (as 20 second-workout and 40 second-rest in between), where there are four main exercises with heavy loads involved, and a progression for plyometric exercise as a way of developing excellence in jumping, throwing and

STRENGTH The basis of this body functional strength workout is the muscular endurance and a promotion of the lean muscle with a load effect, performing under pressure with a heavy load producing a low to medium repetition, achieving fatigue as a work type, which should be worked until the limit of resistance, with big periods workout and short term rest as a ratio of 45:15 seconds designed on a form of superset having every block of exercises in a 4 minute duration.

TRIATHLON’S

RISING STAR

At 17 years old, Abdulla Attiya is more than just a rookie. Having been invited to the legendary Bahrain Endurance Team and to participate in TriYAS Abu Dhabi, the sports community is beginning to see his mettle and paying attention. PowerUp sits with the triathlete to see how this whole experience has been for him

B

eing surrounded by professional athletes who are world champions and Olympic medalists has not daunted Abdulla Attiya one bit. He too, has proven some things. At 17, he is the youngest pro-athlete to be invited to TriYAS Abu Dhabi, where the age of pro-athletes start at 25. He was first place in the 2016 Kuwait Duathlon. He won the gold medal in the Asian Cross-Country Championship and he placed 2nd overall in his age group at the ITU World Triathlon in Abu Dhabi, and that’s only for this year! A few years ago, he was racing the triathlon circuit for fun with competitors in his own age group. Now he

is competing against top professional athletes, and with the way he’s going, it’s not going take long for him to be a top athlete himself. What has boomeranged Abdulla into this perfect vortex of talent and opportunity is his commitment to achieve the goals that he has set for himself. He wants to represent Bahrain in the 2020 Olympic games, to become #1 in Asia, and to finish Top 20 in the world. Furthermore, he wants to retain the title of Arab champion.

BAHRAIN’S OWN

Perhaps it is this discipline and dedication to the sport that has led him to be chosen in the elite team of athletes handpicked by HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa famed for their exploits in world competitions as well as for their podium wins. The first Bahraini member of the

development team, Abdulla will be coached and trained by world class champions, an opportunity other athletes would give an arm and a leg for! Abdulla was selected to be part of the team because he already has a competitive edge in sports at his age. He is also very professional and committed to his training, as well being a good example for Bahraini youth. Unlike other kids his age who socialize or hang out, Abdulla is strictly focused on his studies and on his training. He says “My training partners are like my brothers”. Furthermore, the fact that he posts all of his sporting exploits online allow him to be a positive inspiration to other young people. This stems in part from his mother who he says “is the wind in my sail”, and adds that “She’s extremely proud of me”.

WHAT IT’S LIKE TO JOIN THE ELITE TEAM

Abdulla has had the opportunity of the lifetime being part of this elite team. He used to meet with the team members before he was selected in the team last February in his visit to Dubai during the IRONMAN 70.3 race. He has had numerous opportunities to take valuable lessons from the team. One of the important things that he has learned is to give your all during the race and afterwards to recover and reflect on areas for improvement. Abdulla is one of the rising stars that we will watch out for. Who knows where he’ll be in a few years time? Congratulations Abdulla!

TRIATH SPORTS & FITNESS

101 - YOUR FIRST TRY

Becoming a triathlete is a lot easier than you think.

E

stablished triathletes everywhere will have you believe that what it takes to do a triathlon involves 5am alarms, strict diets and weekly 100-mile bike rides. And while it is true that winning an Ironman takes this kind of singular focus, completing your local sprint race in a reasonable time is far more manageable.

HERE’S WHY A sprint distance triathlon is a 500-750m swim, followed by a 20km bike ride and a 5km run. These are completed back-to- back and your

28 | PowerUp | April 2016

transition time counts towards your total time. You can reach the finish line of a sprint race with a training plan that builds even the most inactive individual up to about one hour of exercise a day over three to six months.

BREAKING DOWN THE TRIATHLON First, you need to be comfortable in the water and learn how to swim. Some races take place in pools and others in lakes or the ocean. If you are uncomfortable in the water, choose a race with a pool swim and take lessons. The cycling portion can be done on any bike. A better bike will buy you a faster bike split, but if you are there to finish who cares? Let the pros ride their $10,000 bikes and be content to make it through the 20km on your old commuter. In training, you will only need to go 5-10km further than the race distance so build up to that over the months. The run is the last discipline and will certainly test your fitness, but run/walking is also an option. As with cycling, you will only need to build up to the race distance or slightly further in training. So if you are a complete beginner, start with a run/

walk program and build up from there.

FIND YOUR OWN TRAINING ZONE I recommend following a training plan to take the thinking out of the process. You do not want to be deciding every morning what you are doing for training. That should be predecided by someone who knows what they are doing. All you have to do is commit to the process. This is the part that often proves to be the most difficult.

always try to find a way to get out of physical work. Know this ahead of time so you don’t buy into the crap as it comes at you. Sports is by definition physical. And so my best advice for the wouldbe triathlete looking for inspiration comes from my favourite goddess herself Just Do It.

The crux of the matter lies here: do not be fooled by the ripped bodies you see on TV during the Ironman Race in Hawaii. A sprint triathlon is not a difficult mountain to climb. The hardest part is getting yourself motivated to the process day after day, week after week. And this bring me to the final piece of advice for the would-be triathlete;

DO NOT BELIEVE YOUR OWN NEGATIVITY Your problems are not special. When your alarm goes off for your morning run and the vultures start circling in, do not stop to think, just do. Your mind will

303 - ADVICE FOR TRIATHLETES With Ironman season well on its way, here are some advice from a world-class triathlete for people who are crazy about triathlon.

After twelve years as a professional triathlete and two Ironman wins, I am happy to say that I have learned a few things about training. This is not because I learned it from my coaches. As an athlete, I was a terrible listener and had to learn everything the hard way, by trial and error, success and failure. Years later, I humbly offer my advice hoping you won’t make the same mistakes I had.

LEAVE THE COACHING TO THE COACHES

1

Chose a coach that you trust because he or she has a good track record at getting people to their desired goals. Then sit back and trust that coach. Do not revisit that decision until the season is over.

2

BELIEVE IN YOUR PLAN

Once your coach is chosen and the plan is in place, your success or failure is dependent on how much your believe in the plan. If you aren’t 100% “in” then you probably chose the wrong coach. You need to believe that your plan is working.

GO HARD WHEN IT’S TIME TO GO HARD AND GO EASY WHEN IT’S TIME TO GO EASY

3

Many people fall into the trap of training in the grey zone, not hard enough for a really good training effect and not easy enough to recover from your hard efforts. Getting this right always starts with going slow. Even though my

Ironman Race pace is 4.15/ km, I still do my easy runs at 6min/km. Then, when it’s time to go hard, I have plenty in the tank for my fast track workouts.

YOU 4 WHAT EAT REALLY MATTERS If you are doing a big volume of training, say 1520h/week, try to get a few calories in within15mins of a hard session. Make sure your diet includes plenty of fruit and veg and other healthy carbohydrates as well as a variety of protein sources and healthy fats.

TRAINING WITH OTHER PEOPLE MAKES YOU FASTER

5

Some people are resistant to training in groups. They see themselves as lone wolves or their schedules

don’t allow for a lot of flexibility. The truth is that most people go faster when other people are there to push them. Plain and simple.

TRAINING WITH OTHER PEOPLE CAN BURN YOU OUT

6

That said, if you are training with other people day in, day out and going hard all the time without enough recovery, you will burn yourself out. Make sure you do those easy spins easy (see #3) and this might mean you have to do them on your own. With a little luck and by following this simple advice, you can avoid a few pitfalls, learn from my mistakes and reach your triathlon goals quickly.

INNOVATION

SPORTS & FITNESS

When it comes to triathlon and cycling products in particular, innovation and customisation is always on top of the list for market leaders. Simply keeping up to date with all the innovation is a challenge in itself. This exponential curve of new product creation has given birth to almost all of the ‘eye- candy’ that you see in the TriLife store today.

Customising your bicycle has become a very popular worldwide trend and in some parts of the world, it has become a high end form of ‘showboating’ and status. TriLife offers you the opportunity to customise a bicycle built to whatever specification you desire. Build a bike according to your budget or build a dream machine that only exists in your mind. A lot of people think that a power meter is something that is going to make their bike better or make them faster. But this is not entirely true. A power metre is essentially a training buddy. It allows you to follow training programs better, gauge your efforts, learn more about your riding style and measure your progress. At TriLife we have power metres in many different forms such as; GarminVector pedals, Quarq cranks and Rotor power metres. Power cranks like Quarq make use of very delicate torque sensor or strain gauges that pick up the torsion in the crank arm allowing it to provide a power (watt) reading.

A brand that has been around for a while, but is now taking the local cycling scene by storm. When it comes to ‘free speed’, Ceramicspeed has it dialled to perfection. Ceramicspeed products are quite possibly one of the most ultimate upgrades that you can make to your racing machine – for that reason, all TriLife employees are full kitted. Ceramicspeed is a brand that provides a high performance option for all the bearings in your bicycle, including the chain. This means that every moving part can now be smoother than you could ever imagine. Saving watts and adding speed. www.ceramicspeed.com

Ever run on a cloud? Well you can now. ON’s running cloud technology allows you to land soft and push off hard. When you land, the little clouds are designed to collapse to give you the softest landing possible. The clouds then grip and reform, allowing you to push off firmly. ON Running says that the Clouds act like tiny stability balls, responding to every movement of your foot. These balls, aka Clouds, activate your postural muscles and enable you to stabilize your foot strike without artificial support, putting you back in control. www.on-running.com

HEART The Bahrain Road Runners Association is an iconic and important part of Bahrain street culture, and have been for many years.

T

he Bahrain Road Runners Association is the island’s biggest running group which also supports local and international charities with each year’s surplus from entries. Also, the membership and sponsorship payments are used to give back to the community. The roots of BRR go back to the 1970’s when the expatriate community got together with the intent of organizing races for running enthusiasts in Bahrain. The club was initially known as the Bahrain Striders organizing several races from a short to a full marathon. Since then the group has regularly organized a series of popular races within the Kingdom including the aquathlon, grand prix series, half marathon, duathlon, cross island race, a full marathon, and 10km runs. They also hold regular training runs, bike rides and junior events throughout the year to which everyone is welcome. Races are held in various venues including Sofitel, the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Hamala Beach and many more. Today, BRR has more than 500 members and hosts many events annually around the Kingdom of Bahrain. These events attract a total of

over 10,000 runners a year. The current chairman, Khalifa Al Najim has moved BRR to a higher level when online registration for all events has become the norm. Khalifa has proposed many more events that inspired the community. Some of the more popular events that he came up with was the Water Run at the Ritz Carlton on the 18th of September 2015 and the Color Me Bahrain Run on the 22 nd of January 2016. During these events, the number of participants exceeded the limit. The organizers had to unleash runners in groups of 100 at a time. These events are now part of Bahrain’s street history and the Bahrain Road Runners have more to offer. BRR has grown bigger over the past 40 years, from a local running club to a regional champion of the running movement, and its efforts and events serve all runners and active individuals. Former BRR Chairman, Tariq Al Gossaibi said A strictly volunteer run organization, BRR has come a long way since its inception. The record breaking participation in almost all of its events organized in the recent past indicates a definite increase in the level of love and awareness for sports within the community. The future of BRR and its impact on sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain will continue to be written for years to come. For more information: www.bahrainroadrunners.com

erman kite-surfer Anke Brandt discovered her passion for kitesurfing in the Kingdom of Bahrain, where she had been living and working in for the past four years. She holds a previous world-record for kite surfing when she kited her way around Bahrain on March 2014, covering 250 kilometers in 12 hours, leaving at 6am and completing the last kilometer at 6pm. Anke’s second kite mission, spanning 17 hours goes over unfamiliar waters from Bahrain to Qatar. It was a breathless day and night as spectators all over the world watched their social media sites to follow news about this spectacular woman and her ambitious mission. She was accompanied on this daring mission by her team on a support boat. “I believe that you’re only as strong as your team”, Anke said. The team includes two kite-surfers who are familiar with her equipment; Dr. Amy from In Touch Clinic; and a two-member photography team who captured footage of Anke during the course of the mission. The photographers are one of the key components in getting the approval from the Guiness Book of World

Records. In addition to the team on the boat, four teammembers have been working behind the scenes to create buzz and inform people about the mission. “So that’s a team of 12 people for a one-day mission, who are doing this for free or very little money to cover their own costs,” Anke says. Their journey began at Art Rotana, Amwaj Islands on March 17 at 4PM (GMT +3). The goal of the mission was to raise $5,500 for Wings for Life, a charity organization that aims to make spinal cord injury curable through on-going research. The initial aim of the Get Kite Mission—Kitesurf Arabia was to kite-surf 550 kms from Bahrain to the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. However, weather conditions prevented the team from doing so. “We tried to pick the perfect day but things can change and this time the weather moved in too fast so we had to make the call to stop at Doha”. Anke’s preparation for this spectacular mission included a mix of weight training and classes such as the Anti-Gravity yoga and Faszien training. Aside from that, Anke did lots of training on open water. As Anke says, “It’s all about variety and trying to do different things. Personal training pushed me to new highs on my fitness levels and helped me a lot to trust my body. We can get so much more out of it than what we think”. The boat the support crew rode on was a 2015 Majesty 48. It has safety equipment on board and was fully catered for the trip, equipped with satellite phones while Anke carried a tracking device. Two life rafts are also on board for emergencies. ART Rotana provided training facilities and accommodation for Anke and her team as they prepared to take on the new challenge.

SPORTS & FITNESS

ANOTHER GUINNES BOOK RECORD Intense training over the past year has left Anke in top physical condition which enabled her to overcome the physical strain of the challenge. “I’m feeling great now and was very surprised at how my body felt during the entire trip” Following the experience, Anke is confident that she would like to try kiting the distance to Abu Dhabi again. “There were many lessons we learned and there was the likelihood that the first time wouldn’t work out because there were so many factors playing the part”. The record is now to be approved by the Guinness Book of World Records through footage and photographic evidence. Anke says “This is the greatest experience of my entire life. It’s going to take a lot to top this!”

KITESURFING

KITESURFING 101 Kitesurfing in Bahrain started in 1999-2001 with 4 or 5 expatriates who discovered the sport.

S

kate Shack was already involved with windsurfing, wakeboarding and fun kites including kite bugies so it was only natural for them to get involved with kitesurfing. Even with only a handful of potential customers, they thought this new sport would add a new flavor to the shop and perhaps grow. It did quickly gain popularity with some Western expats and developments in the

construction anddesign of the kites made it a little safer with better performance and stability. The only kitesurfing spots available in Bahrain at the time was AlJazira beach on the west of the island until Durrat beach was discovered by the kitesurfing group. That then became the only place to go to kitesurf because it has favorable winds most of the year, a nice clean beach and a kind of romance with no buildings or construction around anywhere.

This was to be short lived when construction on Durrat started and the beach was closed off to the public. At the same time as developers closed Durrat off to kitesurfers, Amwaj islands welcomed them with open arms and even provided gate passes to use a finished part of the development. SkateShack has been in Amwaj ever since, kitesurfing and teaching people to kitesurf.

KITESURFING STAGES

LAUNCHING AND LANDING THE KITE. To launch and land a kite, you will have to master how to walk while flying it. To be able to maneuver in the water, you would also have to be proficient in flying with one hand as well as knowing how to use the emergency release.

BODYDRAGGING This involves flying in the water and allowing the kite to drag you through the water. Your instructor will teach you how to body drag upwind and how to relaunch the kite from the water.

WATER START

KITE FLYING

Using the kites power to pull you onto the plane using the kiteboard you can now ride upwind and turn on the water. Bravo!

As a child, most of us have flown a small kite of some kind. Using any 2 line kite can improve kite control. The Kitesurf training kite is a small foil kite with two lines and a control bar. Steering, hand position, muscle memory and control are taught on this kite.

SETUP OF THE LEADING EDGE INFLATABLE (LEI) KITE. Learning how to set up your LEI will teach you about wind theory (upwind, downwind) safety systems, beach awareness and kite design. This is essential for when you already own your equipment.

REMINDERS: The jumps and tricks come with more practice and riding and should not be attempted immediately. Always ride within your ability, especially if you are still learning.People who are interested in this sport can seek guidance, training, advice, kites and kite repairs at skate shack. www.powerup-mag.com

BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SUP It’s watersport season! And what better way to welcome it than through a paddle boarding challenge? Paddle Sports Marine gave us a lesson in paddle boarding to prepare us for different adventures in the months to come.

EQUIPMENT The Paddleboard Paddleboards come in all shapes and sizes. The most common ones are epoxy and fiberglass wrapped around an EPS foam core with one or several fins to help the board track in water. This is much thicker than your average surfboard.

The Paddle The general rule for the height of the paddle is that it should always be 6 to 10 inches above the height of the paddler (for easy paddling). The longer blade is for flat water use while the shorter blade is used in the surf. The blade is typically bent at a slight angle to the shaft for more forward reach when taking a stroke.

The Personal Flotation Device A life vest is only necessary when doing long-distance paddle boarding, or in a race. We were given life vests because we were a little scared since this is our first time to paddle, and also because we didn’t know how to swim.

WATER SPORTS

BASIC PADDLING TECHNIQUES Use your paddle as a lever. Your top hand will be driving the lever and the bottom hand will act as the fulcrum point. 1 1 Keep your bottom arm straight and relatively still. 2 2 Pull your top arm toward your body to extend the paddle forward. 3 3

forward and extend your reach. 4 4 Insert the paddle into the water as far forward as possible and bury the paddle into the water. 5 5 Rather than pulling your paddle through the water, pull past your paddle. 6 6 To make a turn, paddle on one side until you’ve reached your desired place. To turn faster, use the reverse end of the paddle.

Rotate your top shoulder

SPORTS & BEYOND

DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA President, Bahrain Triathlon Association

CAN SPORTS MAKE YOU SMARTER?

We know that sports helps us in many ways, but how about in cognitive development? Apparently, it is possible to make ourselves smarter through sports.

he brain functions because blood flows through it, but we do not recognize consciously that the better the blood flow through your brains, the smarter you become. Having said that, there is a way for every single one of us to increase our productivity.

T

When you visit the doctor, before going in, the nurse would take you to the nursing room to check your blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and so on to enable the doctor to understand how your body works. For athletic people, the heart rate is lower

42 | PowerUp | April 2016

than for people who don’t exercise. While our muscles seen by the naked eye do grow stronger and perhaps bigger with exercise, people generally forget that the heart is an actual muscle. When training, people also work on strengthening the muscles of their hearts, even the size. So once your heart is lean and strong, it doesn’t need much energy or beats to pump your blood where it needs to go. Other people’s hearts might need two pumps to send the same amount of blood that your heart can pump in one. It’s a proven fact that you perform worse in school

exams if you went in with a full stomach, It is because much of your energy will go to digesting your food: which prevents the rest of your body, including your brain, to get enough blood for performance. When your heart is strong, you will have a much better blood flow, which means your mental performance will become optimal. Sports can be the best means to achieve your end. We can use sports, or simply an active lifestyle, to reach levels that we could not have reached before. Unfortunately today, I see many people, older in their age, who claim that their

time of becoming active or doing sports has passed. They, and the society we live in, see sports as something for the younger generation. This is a big fallacy that needs to be changed. In fact the older individuals in society, those above the age of forty need to be more active than the younger ones. We cannot afford to simply state that we do not have time for sports. This is a very bad way of viewing life. What we need to do is to strive to always become better, smarter, more productive, and more efficient. Sports will help us reach this milestone. www.saqeralkhalifa.com

EXERCISE

4) DON’T SKIMP ON CARBS

TIPS It is hard to find the time to exercise, but in our stress-riddled world, it is also hard not to. Here are some tips that will help you get toned, fit and happy.

SPORTS & FITNESS

2) BE CONSISTENT

Your body needs them to fuel a workout, so reach for fruit or high fiber crackers an hour beforehand. If you’re exercising for 90 minutes or longer, include some protein so that the carbs break down more slowly, giving you longer-lasting energy. Try low-fat cheese and crackers, trail mix, or half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

No exercise program in the world will work if you don’t do it consistently. Sure, it’s hard to be consistent when you don’t see the pay-off immediately, but if you do your exercise, be it a daily walk, or 10 minutes of jogging every single day no matter what; you will soon see the results. Have faith!

7) JUMP-ROPE Jump rope is the best cardio workout ever. You’ll burn around 26 calories per minute, it’s that intense! Although it takes timing, patience, and power, you’ll get in great shape just jumping rope 10 minutes a day.

5) USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM Find a friend or relative whom you like and trust, who also wants to establish a healthier lifestyle. Encourage one another, exercise together. Use this as an opportunity to enjoy one another’s company and to get fitter.

1) DRESS FOR SUCCESS Wear comfortable, properly fitted sneakers or flat shoes with laces. Make sure your clothing is loose-fitting and will not constrict your movement. Also make sure it jives with the weather and the type of activity you will be doing.

3) SET REALISTIC GOALS Don’t strive for imperfection or an improbable goal that can’t be met. Focus instead on increasing healthy behaviors. For example, if you can’t do a 5km run just yet, make it a habit to walk 15 minutes a day and build up time, distance, and intensity from there. @powerupmag

6) DO BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES

8) PADDLE YOUR WAY TO FLATTER ABS Go kayaking to get a flat stomach—it’s ideal because much of your rowing power comes from your core. If you can’t go the water, you can mimic the movements of the kayak at home which will result in increased power for your core.

Most people don’t even try to get fit because they can never go to the gym. If you’ve got floor space (and we’re sure you do!), try simple floor exercises to target areas such as the hips and buttocks, legs and thighs, and chest and arms (like push-ups, squats, and lunges). HEALTH BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE A DIET RICH IN GARLIC, OLIVE OIL, AND VEGETABLES. THIS HAS LONG BEEN TOUTED BY HEALTH EXPERTS AS ONE OF THE SECRETS OF A HEART-HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

M

Mediterranean cuisine which is forged from the crossroads of three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa is a beautiful mix of healthy and delicious food. The result is a way of cooking and serving that has become popular across the Mediterranean and around the globe. This kind of diet has garnered praise for its role in keeping the body healthy and for staving off chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular problems. Fresh vegetables, fruit, legumes, low fat dairy products, fish, nuts, and seeds are the foundation of this cuisine. Other staples

54 | PowerUp | April 2016

include olive oil, nuts, stuffed vegetables, and yogurt enhanced with herbs and spices instead of heavy sauces. The most common seasonings in Mediterranean cuisine include mint, parsley, oregano, garlic, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Parsley and mint aids in digestion with parsley being particularly rich in Vitamin K and antioxidants as well. Fresh fruits and vegetables are consumed in much larger portions than meat, and flat bread or pita is eaten at every meal. Since saturated fat and cholesterol are only found in animal-based foods, the Lebanese diet is considered one of the healthiest in the world. Heart healthy fats

like monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids provided by olive oil and fish are its primary source of fats. Olive oil is also known to help control blood clotting and blood sugar levels. You also get protein in the form of legumes and fish instead of red meat and poultry. Results from the Lyon Diet Heart Study, which analyzed the effects of diet on the coronary health of individuals who had already suffered a heart attack, found that patients placed on a Mediterranean diet showed a 50-70 percent reduction of having a second cardiovascular attack. Following this type of diet can also benefit the health of your

brain cognition and overall memory. And who doesn’t want that? At Al Mayass Restaurant, you can get a variety of Mediterranean dishes bursting with the flavors indigenous to these countries. Specialties like hummus, falafel, and baba ganoosh are made from fresh ingredients that are naturally low in fat. Now you can satisfy your cravings without sacrificing your health. If you are looking for Mediterranean food in a fun, casual, and artsy atmosphere, you can’t go wrong with Al Mayass. A CULTURE

OF CARE For years renowned as a private care hospital, Awali has now opened its doors to the public but with the same consistent care and treatment you would expect from a dedicated health specialist.

A

wali Hospital’s emphasis on effective communication and a stress-free environment sets it apart from other hospitals. Their tagline, A Culture of Care means that each and every patient gets personalized service. The staff of highly qualified general physicians and surgeons serves both in and outpatients. Modern facilities and dedicated staff combine to create a professional yet friendly atmosphere. Patients will have no problem in getting admitted, and there are no long queues in line unlike in larger hospitals. This would mean immediate check-ups and speedier results. This also means that you have your results emailed right to your inbox: a feat that many hospitals or laboratories have not as yet achieved. Since Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tariq Hameed has stepped in place, it’s

March 2016 2016 56 | PowerUp | April

like new light has been cast to the old building. Renovation has been made to make the hospital bigger and cheerier. There is a new parking space that allows more visitors to enter. The once small hospital has now been expanded to house their 22 specialties. As Dr. Tariq says “It is pleasant to see the hospital being used”. With the expansion of its facilities, staff, and services, a wider and more demanding community can be cared for with ease. “We make people feel special,” Dr. Tariq says. Dr. Tariq is planning for a five year growth of the hospital with a Cardiac Center opening just right next to the hospital promising new avenues for growth and expansion. Since the Cardiac Center will be a specialist hospital, any other operations that they need and don’t cater to, Awali can take care of. Established over 60 years ago to serve the needs of Bahrain, Awali Hospital has constantly changed to suit the developing community, and tend to its needs. Proof of its massive growth are the figures in 2013, there were 30,000 visits in the hospital; in 2015, 50, 000. There were 400 surgeries performed in 2013 and 860 in 2015. There was a 35% increase in Caesarian birth in the past two years. This figures show that the hospital is being more active in providing health care services to the island. This excellence in medical and nursing care has gained the hospital a respected reputation which is second to none.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE How common is cardiovascular disease especially in this country?

Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Four out of five CVD deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes and this accounts for about 17 million deaths per year worldwide.CVD is a growing health problem in Bahrain and although we do not have an accurate estimate of its prevalence, according to data published by the World Health Organization in May 2014, 16% of the total deaths in Bahrain is due to CVD. The age adjusted death rate is 85.45 per 100,000 populations and this ranks Bahrain at 94th position in the world.

blood pressure and diabetes. They in turn cause early fatty deposition in the lining of arteries as well as the hardening of arteries. A balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables and oily fish can be protective. Cooking oil should be kept to the minimum and it is the quantity of oil that matters more than the type.

Dr. Syed Raza, MD, MRCP, FRCP, CCT, FACC, FESC, PgMED, Edu, DipCard is a consultant cardiologist and physican at Awali Hospital.

What causes cardiovascular diseases?

The commonest risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are Diabetes Mellitus and smoking. While other causes are hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary life style and psychological stress.

What is the connection between high blood pressure and heart disease?

High blood pressure affects the heart mainly in two ways. It leads to the hardening of arteries supplying blood to the heart and also of arteries elsewhere in the body. In addition, since the heart has to pump blood against a greater pressure, this leads to the thickening of heart muscles which may eventually lead to heart failure and abnormal heart rhythm.

How is smoking and heart disease linked?

Smoking damages the lining of the arteries, leading to a build-up of fatty material (atheroma) which narrows the artery. This can cause angina, a heart attack or a stroke. The nicotine in cigarettes can lead to palpitation. Smoking ‘shisha’ is equally or more harmful in some respects though many believe that it is a safer option.

Does diet play a part in the development of heart disease?

Unhealthy diet is an important risk factor for coronary artery disease. Diets rich in saturated fat and high in sugar or salt content lead to an increased risk of obesity, high cholesterol, high

RECYCLING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

R

ecycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh, raw materials, energy usage, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by decreasing the need for conventional waste disposal and lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to plastic production. Recycling is a major component of major waste reduction. In Bahrain, you can apply for “free bins” to let your school, supermarket, compound, or apartment building be part of the “Recycling for Charity” program to contribute to the environment. nd

Reducing our waste leads to a cleaner and greener planet. Let’s care for the environment to make it sustainable for future generations.

GROOMING

Say Hello to BEAUTIFUL

HAIR

Long hair is hard to manage especially if its dry and frizzy and damaged from the sun, too much hairstyling, and coloring. PowerUp Magazine sat with the Head Stylist of Gloss Salon to know how to protect, treat, and nourish dry hair.

M

any women dream of having glossy, silky hair. But for most, that dream is far from achievable. The reality for a lot of women who are on the go and who are very active is dry hair which is often put back in a ponytail. Dry hair often stems from overwashing, or using a harsh shampoo which strips away your hair’s natural oils. It can also occur from

62 | PowerUp | April 2016

blowdrying the hair too close to the scalp, which will leave it irritated and red; using too much heat in hairstyling from heated hair straighteners or curling irons; applying chemical treatments including dyes, perms, and relaxers or going from light to dark haircolor and bleaching the hair too much. All these things cause dryness and damage to the hair not to mention sun, wind, and dry hair; which is especially true for athletes. When I came to the salon Carine Ziade, the Head Stylist of Gloss Salon, examined my hair to determine the extent of its damage. She told me that my hair was very dry and damaged (Level 2). She then outlined to me the ProFiber treatment by L’Oreal which offers a tailor-made in-salon solution for all levels of dry and damaged hair. The ProFiber treatments are divided into three levels: 1) damaged cuticles (naturally dry); 2) damaged cuticles and cortex (dry and damaged); and 3) damaged cuticles and cortex (very dry and very damaged). The treatments, which are called Rectify, Restore, and Reconstruct consists of an in-salon treatment, a mask, and a recharge plus; a home care range so customers can follow the treatment at home. First of all, I was given a shampoo

“... She then outlined to me the ProFiber treatment by L’Oreal which offers a tailor-made insalon solution for all levels of dry and damaged hair. ” using the Restore line of treatment. Then Carine applied an ampoule with a concentrate of Aptyl 100 on the damaged areas of my hair which will help to reactivate it. Then, she applied the Regenerate Aptyl 100 on top of the concentrate and massaged it into the hair fibre which she says will give my hair a renewed look. After ten minutes, she rinsed my hair and blowdried it and asked me how I feel. I touched my hair first and said it feels softer, and stronger. She also showed me the comb and I saw there was no hair left, when I usually have so much hair fall after I brush my hair! Finally, my hair felt very thick and the hair shaft seemed very shiny. PowerUp Verdict: This is awesome, awesome, awesome! I’ve never seen my hair look so good! Thank you Gloss Salon!

Arabic Fa sh i o n

WITH A TWIST

A pair of sporty sisters just re-imagined active wear in a traditional way infusing Arabic calligraphy and Bahraini art into their designs. Check out this up and coming brand!

If I wouldn’t wear it, I wouldn’t be selling it ”

In the current wave of mass produced fashion Tru Active stands out as a designer ideal. Did you know that Tru Active doesn’t reproduce the same design twice? Once a design is sold out, it’s gone forever! That is probably the reason why so many people can’t wait to get their hands on these one-of-a-kind designs. Having always been active, new mom Dana and recent London College of Fashion graduate Hala teamed up to create Tru Active, a young unique activewear brand that represents their heritage and passions. Designer Hala uses her design skills to combine her father Khalid Zubari’s Arabic calligraphy work with her geometric prints. Hala also uses paintings from her Uncle Hisham Zubari’s

Gilgamesh series to create pieces that are truly close to home. Hala was inspired by her sister Dana after watching her cross the finish line as the first Bahraini women to compete in IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca in 2013. Since then Dana and Hala always knew it was a matter of time before they would take on a joint venture like Tru Active. Their motto is Tru to ourselves. Tru to our culture. They believe in supplying the highest quality garments with the most unique designs. To make each of their customers truly stand out in their activewear. For more information:

TECHNOLOGY

GADGETS

FASHION & GEARS

TECH GADGETS FOR A MORE ACTIVE LIFE Some people have used technology to get lazier, as a result; this has caused them to pile on the pounds. To counter that, here are some tech gadgets that will inspire you to lead a more active life.

SENSORIA SMART SOCKS These tootsies not only keep your tootsies warm, they will also provide feedback on your running style.

ADIDAS SMART BALL

WITHINGS GO The Go will monitor your steps, sleep, calorie burn, and activities like running or swimming, since it’s waterproof. It has a minimal display which shows your overall progress towards your daily goal in a radial chart and modular design (the face pops out and can be worn as a clip, bracelet, or pendant). Plus you can check out the Withings app to get more insight about your daily habits. This company believes that fitness tracking technology works best when baked into thoughtful devices that are fun, easy, and accessible to use. The E-ink screen displays activity in real time at all times, functions as a watch on demand, and is legible in bright sunlight and water. The best part? Withings Go comes ready to go the distance with a battery that lasts up to 8 months.

@powerupmag

Smart Ball is a football with an integrated sensor that detects speed, spin, flight path and impact point. Kick data is transmitted wirelessly over Bluetooth Smart where it is displayed visually. With the Adidas Smart Ball, you can fine-tune your technique and take your game to a whole new level. Its built-in sensor tells you everything you need to know about your kick so you can learn to control, strike, and manipulate the ball like a pro. Compatible with iOs and Android, you can connect the smart ball to your device for instant feedback on power, spin, strike, and trajectory, along with tips and guidance to help you develop supreme on-pitch skills. Furthermore, it has been rigorously tested to ensure it will stand up to all match and training conditions.

NXT-ID WOCKET SMART WALLET Though its name sounds a bit wonky (like something out of a Dr. Seuss book), this standalone wallet is one smart cookie. It enables you to scan all of your credit, debit, loyalty, and gift cards, so you can leave your physical wallet at home. It has a touchscreen e-ink display, no smartphone required, and it can recognize your voice for biometric approval; or you can just use a pin.Smart Ready Phone. It will provide you with visual and audio cues that will get you wherever you want to go.

APPS

FASHION & GEARS

EASY APPS FOR EASYFITNESS In the health and fitness craze, you’ve probably downloaded dozens of apps with the intent of becoming a marathoner or even to race in Ironman. Once the excitement wears away, you are left with the feeling of just wanting to be able to touch your toes. Here are some apps that will help you keep fit, stay calm, and get energized in a smart and sustainable way.

GYMAHOLIC This is a comprehensive workout aid for those who commit plenty of time to the weights room. The library of exercises can be used in a set of workout plans for all abilities, or you can build your own custom routine. With gymaholic, you can maximize your progress. This app will give you all the help you need to track your fitness activity, body measurements, body weight, and visual changes.

CYCLEMETER Despite the name, you can use Cyclemeter to track walks, runs, and other activities. For sure, it is also one of the best bicycle-riding apps in the market though it also appeals to fitness enthusiasts who participate in more than one sport. Built from the ground up for iPhone, iPad, and iCloud, it makes your iPhone a powerful fitness computer—with maps, graphs, splits, intervals, laps, announcements, zones, training plans, and more. It records and stores an unlimited number of workouts—years of workouts only take up the space of a few songs. You can view your workouts on a calendar organized by routes and activities. This app will also summarize your statistics by day, week, month, year, and overall. As summarized by Wired, Cyclemeter is “obsessively complete…a killer app”. We think so too!

HEALTH & WELLNESS 82 | PowerUp | March 2016

MOVESUM A very simple step tracker that displays the calories you’ve burned through your day’s plodding, and equating it with food you might eat. PEAR PERSONAL COACH The Pear Personal Coach app talks you through runs, athome workouts, yoga routines, and even training programs for running races.
