FRODENO AND RYF FLY IN ROTH Bahrain Endurance 13 locked out the top spots at Challenge Roth, with Jan Frodeno setting a new world record for long distance triathlon and Daniela Ryf logging the third-fastest finish time on the Roth race course. Frodeno exited the water with a race-best 45:22-minute swim split over 3.8 kilometers, putting a minute’s distance between him, the rest of the large men’s field, and Andreas Raelert’s swim time from his world record-setting day in 2011. The German continued to pull away on the bike leg, logging a 4:09:22 on the 180-kilometer course and shaving off even more time from Raelert’s bike split of 4:11:43 despite falling into a ditch on the second lap. Matching Raelert’s

marathon time almost down to the second at 2:40:53, the Olympic gold medalist and Ironman world champion smashed the old world record by six minutes, taking the victory in 7:35:39. “When I read the time, I was obviously really happy with it but it was a real mixture of disbelief and contentment,” he said. He had made good on his word to break the world record, doing everything possible to make it happen. “I wanted to go big or go home, which is what you want to do when you want to break a record. I’ve worked hard and trained hard for this and I’m really, really glad to do this bucket list race,” he said. “I am very, very sore. It’s quite hard coming down from the hype. It was absolutely manic and equally sensational out there. There were so many goosebumps moments!”

The Bahrain Cycling Team officially announced the sponsorship of Merida Bikes. Merida is the second biggest bicycle manufacturer in the world. The cycling team will compete under the name “Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team”. HH Shk Nasser said, “This sponsorship will enable our cyclists to shine and achieve the desired results on all fronts owing to the unique facilities it (Merrida Bikes)

Tonight for me was about beating myself. I came through everything, put endless hours in and beat myself. Tonight I can truly say I am proud of myself for the first time ever in my life. I am not proud of my performance, but I am proud of myself,” he said.

MESSAGE

THE SEARCH FOR REINFORCING ACHIEVEMENTS

T

he Kingdom of Bahrain's participation in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games received immense support from HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain, may God protect Him, and is being closely followed by HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister and HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, owing to the great importance of the event as the only international sports occasion hosting a large number of participants. We in the Kingdom of Bahrain look at Bahrain's participation in the Rio Olympics from two point of views; first and foremost is that it's in line with the Kingdom's keenness to bolster and reinforce the Olympic values and principles synonymous with the Olympic games, which call for friendship, respect and collaboration between people and seizing the opportunity of having many sports delegations strengthen the friendly ties between our country and their countries. Secondly, Bahrain's participation in this event is considered a great opportunity for the Kingdom to maintain its leading position on the international sports map. It also represents our continued keenness to provide great opportunities to Bahraini sportsmen and women to showcase their talents and improve their technical abilities by competing against the best in the arena of sports from across the world. Rio 2016 is a great chance for Bahrain to maintain its presence in the Olympic games and to add more glories to its name, following the achievements recorded at the previous Olympic games, notably runner Maryam Jamal's silver medal which confirms the development and growth of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the area of sports. Our intention this year is to add to this achievement and we are greatly optimistic given the fact that Bahrain is participating in the upcoming Olympics with a delegation comprising of a large number of sportsmen and women. They are all ready and raring to go to honourably represent the Kingdom and raise high its flag in the skies of Brazil. Worthy of note is that Bahrain is scheduled to compete in four games for the first time, namely athletics, shooting, swimming and wrestling. This in itself is a historical milestone for the Kingdom, thus we are very hopeful of witnessing great achievements from our champions who themselves will be eyeing to win medals that reflect Bahrain's abilities. The Kingdom's participation in this event isn't limited to the sports side, as the 2016 Rio Olympics also represent an opportunity for cultural exchange and building bonds of friendship with people from all over world. We are very keen to seize this opportunity to welcome to our camp-quarters in Brazil the guests, the delegation officials, and participants in the event, to showcase to them the development and achievements of the Kingdom of Bahrain in various areas and to project our local and Arabian culture. Finally, we wish the best of luck to our champions in the next Olympics and we also wish Brazil a huge success in the organisation of this very important event.

O

n seeing a huge number of athletes representing the Kingdom of Bahrain at the biggest Olympic gathering, you will only feel pride and happiness, as their presence is an affirmation of Bahrain’s position on the global sports map, and also clear evidence of what Bahraini athletes have attained, leaving their mark on the global arenas. I am confident that they will be able to handle the responsibility of this participation and will seek to achieve top positions and perform in an honorable manner to raise high, the Kingdom’s name by standing on the crowning podium. They are also capable of embodying the principles of friendship, brotherhood, respect and honorable challenge between their peers from the participating athletes while complying with the rules of the Olympic games and contributing to the principles of sportsmanship in various levels. This historical participation compels us to talk about the leadership of this march, His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Work and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, who through his efforts has managed to translate the vision of the wise leadership. This was done by placing policies and plans with the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports to promote the movement of youth and sports in the Kingdom, and by providing the appropriate environment for all the Bahraini athletes participating in various sport events. In addition, he stood by their side through all stages which reflects on the athletes and the levels set by them to achieve their aspirations in seizing first positions in foreign participations. Returning to the Ambassadors of the country, who will represent our precious Kingdom in the 31st summer Olympic Games “Rio De Janeiro 2016 Olympics” in Brazil, we wish the best of luck in representing our beloved country by writing their name in Olympic history with gold, our hearts are with them and we will always stand behind them.

By appointing his son, H.H, Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, as Chairman of the Council for Youth and Sports and the President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee; H.H, the President, has invested in the athletes by organizing and funding local and regional camps, and sending them to professional foreign training sports camps as well as participating in various tournaments. The presence of Bahrain in the Rio 2016 Olympics not only enables athletes to compete against other professional players; it also raises their performance level to an international standard. More than 30 athletes will be participating in four major sports that are: Athletics, Wrestling, Swimming and Shooting. In addition, this participation will raise awareness for Bahrain women’s equality by the participation of women in sports, not only regionally, but internationally as well just like our Silver Medalist Runner, Mariam Yusuf Jamal. Rio 2016 is an opportunity for Bahrain to gain and develop new relations with other Olympic General Secretaries and strengthen the Kingdom’s image in the Olympic Solidarity. Meeting with various professional athletes, officials and delegates from diverse countries, who might be part of the Solidarity or who represent the founders of the Olympic movement who happen to have a great grasp for success in sports, would be a great chance for the athletes and the managers to expand their vision and gain experience. It would be very beneficial to learn from their strategies to succeed on an International scale and raise the Kingdom’s standards in sports. We trust that this participation will one day set an opportunity for Bahrain to become a Gold Medalist Champion against its competitors regionally and internationally. We believe that with persistence and dedication, Bahrain will reach this level with the strong support of its leaders for the sports sector.

SPORTS & FITNESS

ahrain has become the first nation in the GCC to have implemented sports activities since 1919 when formal education was presented within the kingdom’s schools. From there, Sports in Bahrain evolved and athletes started to compete on the regional level with school competitions in Kuwait, followed by the Arab Cup in Iraq, before taking a major leap by making historic appearances in international challenges across the globe. We are very much confident this time around that our athletes would succeed at the Rio Olympics, especially in athletic events where more than 30 of Bahrain’s top athletes will go up against the world’s best in a variety of contests. Bahrain has big hopes with the short and long distance athletics to excel and bring home as many medals as possible. We also look forward to a first-of-its-kind achievement in wrestling, which will be the first time for Bahrain to compete in this type of sport in the Olympics. We are the hope of the Middle East in this edition of the Olympics and we hope to make our brothers and sisters proud and bring another success to the region, especially in athletics. Our vision at the Bahrain Olympic Committee is to empower representatives of the Olympic movement to achieve sustainable excellence and make it happen in real life. We are always inspired by the directives of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee President, by relying on scientific research, and focusing on qualifying sports leadership to become eligible to represent their respective entities in accordance to the objectives that meet up with the Olympic principles and ideals. We wish our athletes good luck.

BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS

BECOMING AN OLYMPIAN

BY CRAIG HESLOP

Though not everyone can be an Olympian, that shouldn’t stop us from getting inspired by the discipline, valor, and steadfastness of these men and women.

I

t’s projected that 3.6 billion viewers tuned in to the 2012 London Olympics to admire their real-world superheroes. Since the original Games in 776 BC, new athletes have continued on a never-ending journey to become faster, higher and stronger. While Rio has come under some bad press lately, let’s focus on the Olympians and pay homage to the sacrifices they have made. First, lets look at the relative time that athletes put into their chosen discipline. Natalie Coughlin, an American swimmer who won an astonishing 12 Olympic medals, has been training for 30 hours per week over the last four years. This might be her day job but we must remember that these training sessions are brutal. They

18 | PowerUp | August 2016

As you watch this summer, please be mindful that these superheroes have gone through hell to get where they are. They are all champions in their own right and it’s time to celebrate the best this world has to offer! are long, mind-numbing, painful and demoralizing. They are designed to break an individual down and build them up to a whole new level. Mentally and physically, these athletes are on a level that you or I cannot comprehend. Socially and financially, most athletes would be better off staying well away from the Olympics and athletics in general. We hear about the elites like Phelps or Bolt but remember that the majority of these athletes

don’t have huge sponsorship deals. They have sacrificed careers for an opportunity that comes around every four years. Even the famous Jesse Owens who won four gold Olympic medals returned to the USA as an average man. Despite his amazing success, his post Olympic life ended up in a pretty sad state. We think about these athletes with admiration but we often do not give a thought to the person behind it all. Swiss skier Dominique Gisin, went through nine knee surgeries

before she won an Olympic gold. Physically, she will be a total mess in later life. These people give up more than we will ever know for a moment of success. As armchair athletes, we can be incredibly critical of these Olympians. Fourth place is considered a ‘failure’. If someone doesn’t perform we label them as a ‘choker’. The reality is that they are amazing individuals for even making it to the Olympics. These people have combined freakish talent with ultimate sacrifice and dedication. As you watch this summer, please be mindful that these superheroes have gone through hell to get where they are. They are all champions in their own right and it’s time to celebrate the best this world has to offer!

THE OLYMPIC GAMES No event is as eagerly anticipated as the Olympic Games. From the ancient Greek times to the present, it has come to represent friendship and camaraderie through sports.

T

he Olympic Games are considered the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. It is held every four years with the Summer and Winter games alternating two years apart. This was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International

Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1984. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement with the Olympic Charter, defining its structure and authority. The Olympic movement consists of international sports federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOC’s), and organizing committees for each specific Olympic games. As the decisionmaking body, the IOC is responsible for choosing the host city for each Games,

and organizes and funds the games according to the Olympic charter. The IOC also determines the Olympic program consisting of the sports to be contested at each games. There are several Olympic rituals and symbols, such as the Olympic flag and torch, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. Over 13,000 athletes compete at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games in 33 different sports and nearly 400 events. The first, second,

and third-place finishers in each event receive Olympic medals: gold, silver, and bronze respectively. The foundations of all Olympic projects are now firmly rooted in the concept of legacy: what the event will leave behind long after the 16 days of athletic competition are over. The IOC and local organizing committees work together to produce a positive, lasting legacy for the citizens of the host city and country.

ames, fitness and euphoria; it’s all here with the return of the Olympics; this time in Rio. And as the world’s athlete delegations begin acclimatisation and training at various locations in Brazil; here’s what Fitness First experts think every individual should do to be in pace and shape to take on daily challenges with fitness and competitive spirit. The four components of fitness that are essential to any game, sport or even a healthy lifestyle are:

CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING This is very important as sports activities demand a lot of grit and stamina. We recommend that you get familiar with running; keep your targets low and eventually speed up to 5kms in intervals, for at least 2-3 times a week. A good tip to build stamina is, try sprinting at 200m of your maximum speed before bringing it down to a more manageable jog for the next 200m – continue repeating this until you reach the 5km goal; and you will find that you’re engaging in a simulation of how your body will be working for any sports or fitness challenge that you may want to prepare yourself to participate.

24 | PowerUp | August 2016

15-20 reps 5 times

The strength, the stamina and the speed of an Olympian: you can have it too!

MUSCULAR ENDURANCE TRAINING Help your muscles continue to push through as you go through some challenges and obstacles in your fitness routine and sport. This will also reduce the serious risk of you injuring yourself during a sports competition or even as you train. Here is a tried and tested barbell circuit example of how you can train for this; Barbell back squat, bench press, bent over row and military press repeatedly, one after the other five times. Maintain 15-20 reps with one min rest at the end of each set. This should do the trick!

FULL BODY STRENGTH TRAINING To get your entire body in a fitness circuit, we suggest High Intensity Interval Training otherwise known as HIIT to prepare your body. An example of a HIIT workout which is offered at Fitness First clubs would include exercises such as high knees, push ups, squat jumps and mountain climbers. Do each exercise individually with maximum effort for 30 seconds before resting for 30 seconds. Repeat this for each exercise four – five times through and observe how your body transforms steadily into Spartan warrior!

REST Now after having hit the sprints as hard as you could, the enduring squats and the achievement of jumping higher than you have before; your body needs time to recover. These rest periods are magical and you’ll realise how you can come back stronger than the last, each time. No matter how positive you may seem about a 7 days a week fitness schedule, it is very important to take rest days. The best part of having a regimented fitness schedule is to perform beyond your own expectations. But this particular routine should be fine to get you on the way to feeling ready for a fitness-infused life. Experience it all first-hand just like the Olympic participants, as we at Fitness First host them all. Here’s wishing good luck to Bahrain’s athletes for the Rio Olympics 2016! t 31 years old, Adam can be considered a veteran on the mat. He has received a lot of accolades when he won the 70kg- weight wrestling championship in the Asian Wrestling Championship in Thailand. He was crowned the champion on the final day of the event after defeating Muhammad Naderi of Iran in the semi-finals and India’s Kumar Vinod in the final round. The former Russian National team member’s win became the first gold medal won by the Kingdom of Bahrain (as well as the first in a Gulf country) in the Asian Wrestling games. He also made headlines in Mongolia at the World Olympic Games Qualifier for the 2016 Games in Rio. This will mark Adam’s first Olympic experience. Adam’s brother Mavlet, first broke into the spotlight

becoming a two-time Olympic champion and moving up weights throughout his career. A junior World Silver medalist in 2003, Adam had only had opportunities at European championships until 2011. He represented Russia at the 2011 World Championships, but failed to earn a medal. No longer representing Russia, he obtained citizenship in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bahrain has never sent a wrestler to the Olympic games, and Adam is finally in the spotlight where he deserves to be. Adam will meet wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt as they meet on the floor in their battle for Olympic gold. Adam was supported by HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa when he joined the KHK-MMA for training and preparation for the Olympic Games. He has vowed to extend his hard work and effort in a bid to achieve another feat on the international level and in future challenges. We eagerly anticipate how he will perform in the Olympics! www.powerup-mag.com

BOOSTING BAHRAIN’S YOUNG TALENTS

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is strengthening its innovative program the Sports Talent Identification Program, that seeks to uncover budding sports talents.

ased on the vision of the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2030 and the aim of promoting the level of performance and athletic achievement within the framework of the Ministry of Youth and Sports; which includes working on the development of the sports sector to increase participation and support to the youth to allow them to achieve outstanding performance in sports and youth activities; the program is especially made to foster national unity and contribute to raising the reputation of 32 | PowerUp | August 2016

Bahrain at the regional and international level and also to “discover sports talents”. The program focuses on the interests of Bahrain’s promising and talented athletes by helping sports federations discover talent at an early age thereby raising the level of performance in the field of competitive sports and representing the Kingdom in all major sporting events. This was founded on the urgent need to build a system integrated sports curriculum that will ensure the training of future and successive players and will constitute real wealth as well

as a bright future for sports in Bahrain. This year, the Ministry is keen to bring a new spirit of enthusiasm and excitement to the activities of the program for the renewal of the selection process as well as expanding the base of participants. It also aims to provide continuous training to sports clubs and national teams. The participation of 3,000 players from different provinces in the Kingdom of Bahrain gives confidence in the broad athlete base including 12-sports games collectively and individually

and for both sexes. It offers a diversity of activities and offers different camps in association with the program, which is an indicator of the growing development in the quality and size of the events covered by the program. At a time when we look fondly to the output of the program to discover the wonderful sporting talent, we look forward to continue to reap the fruits of this labor during the current year, with thanks and appreciation for all the sincere efforts made by the family members of Bahraini sports and sponsors of this program. www.powerup-mag.com

uring the time of Alexander the Great, Bahrain became very much a part of the Hellenized world. The language of the upper classes was Greek, and Bahrain even became the site of Greek athletic contests. Although not technically a sport, pearl diving has become as much a tradition, a way of life, and a modern pastime that it deserves a mention. Also, freediving without the use of modern scuba technology is just so awesome that it has arisen a sport in itself. Just over a century ago, much of the Kingdom’s economy was dependent on pearl diving, and it has brought the world the famous Bahraini pearls. Now you can take a PADIaccredited scuba course and/ or contact any of the local dive shops for a pearl diving excursion. In the modern day world, Bahrain is considered as the home of motorsports in the Middle East with the the Bahrain International Circuit. DRIPPING WITH DREAD

OVERCOMING YOUR AQUATIC AVERSION

Sometimes one person’s nirvana is another’s purgatory. The pool is one of those places.

F

ew recreational sports divide wouldbe participants into two distinct groups like swimming. On the one hand, you have the lovers, those who crave the wet embrace of the pool, lake or open sea, those who find relaxation in a gentle front crawl or breast stroke, ticking out the lengths with ease. It’s in their genes. On the other hand, you have the haters. Those who fear the water, who likely did not swim as children and for whom even the scent of chorine brings on thoughts of suffering a painful watery death. Rarely do you find people 36 | PowerUp | August 2016

who are truly indifferent about swimming. Yet, swimming is one of the few sports that is truly easy on the body. While you will rarely find a woman who is eight months pregnant running, you will frequently find her at the pool; the same goes for the elderly or those dealing with chronic illness and pain. If we are going to stay healthy and active throughout our lives - and that should be our goal - we should all learn to swim. But what of the haters, those who want to run in fear when the depth of the water goes beyond three feet?

HERE’S MY ADVICE TO ANYONE BRAVE ENOUGH TO LEARN: YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

You can take solace in the fact that you are not the first person who has ever learned to swim. You are one of the few who is brave enough to face your fear.

ACCEPT WHERE YOU ARE AT AND START FROM THERE.

If putting your face in the water is a challenge, so be it. There are few times in our adult lives that we are able to go back to basics, learn simple tasks and make rapid progress. If you need to start by blowing bubbles in the bathtub, embrace it.

GET A LESSON.

Finding a teacher that has experience teaching adults to swim is invaluable. Do not accept free lessons from friends or family members. That will just end in tears. An experienced coach is required.

FLOATIES ARE NOT JUST FOR KIDS.

Learning to swim as a way to keep active, do your first triathlon or stay alive if the boat goes down is an honourable task. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. And do not be ashamed to wear arm bands, use kick boards or anything else to keep you afloat.

SET A GOAL.

Your goal might be to swim a length, 100 lengths or do a 10km swim race. Whatever it is, make sure it is challenging and stick with it.

Anyone who has lived with chronic pain will tell you that water has magical powers. It can be a place where the strain of weight bearing is alleviated and we can keep moving when our bodies want us to stop. You will never regret taking the plunge into swimming’s watery utopia.

In 2005, which was her first full season, she gained the national record in Ethiopia (where she was born), and ran the fastest 3,000 meters of that year, with a time of 8:28:87 at a race in Oslo. Maryam is a two-time world champion in the 1500m, having won at the 2007 and

2009 World Championships in Athletics. She represented Bahrain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, finishing fifth in the 1500m final. She has also had great success in regional competitions: winning two gold medals at the 2006 Asian Games in addition to the Asian Cross Country championships in both 2007 and 2009. Her idol, Haile Gebrselassie, who won two Olympic gold medals over 10,000 metres and four World Championship titles in

the event, was also from the same village. Mariam said “Like all boys and girls in Arsi, I wanted to emulate him (quoted from IAAF.org). The Arsi region where she was born, in the Oromo valley of Ethiopia has also produced other famous distance runners like Kenenisa Tukele and Tirunesh Dibaba. Maryam was the only one in her family attracted to athletics, she started at 15 with school trials in her village for the 100m, 200m, and 40m; however she was a distant finisher. Fast forward

to 2001 when she placed third in the 2001 World Trials at the national junior championships. This drew the attention of a Swiss manager who invited her to Switzerland to race. She competed in road races, mountain races, and three half-marathons, winning most of them. Maryam left Ethiopia with her husband Tariq Yaqoob, due partially to political and economic problems and also because she feared she might not be allowed to go abroad again. She filed for political asylum in Switzerland in

2002 and settled in Lausanne joining the “Staude Lausanne Athletisme”. In 2004, Maryam turned to the 500m at the National Inter-club championships and won in 15:19:45. After achieving the 1500m Olympic standard at the Luzern International meet (4:07:38), she asked the Ethiopian federation to include her in the team for Athens, with the support of the IOC. This was denied as she was not a Swiss citizen. This did not prevent her from recording a great performance on 6 August 2004 at the Zurich Weltklasse meeting in which she finished second in the 3000m (8:40:32). As her refugee status prevented her from competing outside Switzerland, she ran as many races as she could throughout the country to make a living. Maryam left Ethiopia with her husband Tariq Yaqoob, due partially to political and economic problems and also because she feared she might not be allowed to go abroad again. She filed for political asylum in Switzerland in 2002 and settled in Lausanne joining the “Staude Lausanne Athletisme”. She applied for multiple citizenship papers before Bahrain granted her citizenship on that same year provided she change her name to what it is now (she was formerly Zenebech Tola Kotu), and that she compete in the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, in 2006. Competing for Bahrain must have given her wings as she ran at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics even though she was obstructed in the finals. She beat the event winner Tatyana Tomashova, soon afterwards to take the gold at the 2005 IAAF World Athletics Finals. After a bronze medal performance at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Maryam beat Tatyana twice more at

SHOOTING SPORTS Bahrain has made quite a name for itself in the field of shooting.

T

he beginning of shooting sports was by the guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, king of Bahrain. At the beginning of the 70’s, the Bahraini team participated in international competition in the UAE. Some of the most prominent shooters then were His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai and His Excellency Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. The shooting sport in Bahrain began in a semistructured way when in 1977 a shooting team from the Bahrain Defense Force under the leadership of

In 1980, Max Sparks (a Swiss person) became coach of the National Team. Later on, a team from the Ministry of Interior joined the shooting sports headed by Shaikh Ali Bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. With guidance from His Majesty, the King of Bahrain, HE Shaikh Isa Bin Rashid Al Khalifa sent a letter on June 27, 1989 from the General Organization for Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Interior and to the Bahrain Defense Force informing them of the desire of the General Organization for

Youth and Sports to establish a committee to oversee the shooting sport in Bahrain. At that period, the training was at Awali, Bahrain Defense Force, and Ministry of Interior Shooting Ranges. The team participated in the GCC competitions and international tournaments in Korea and in the USA in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. On November 5, 1991, a governmental decision issued by the President of the General Organization of Youth and Sports was made to organize the Bahrain Shooting Committee. The name “Bahrain Shooting Committee” was changed to “Bahrain Shooting Federation” in 2000 under the chairmanship of Shaikh Ali Bin Abdullah Al Khalifa.

MICHAEL PHELPS Michael is an American competition swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 22 medals in three Olympiads. Phelps also holds the all-time record for Olympic gold medals (18, double the second highest record holder), Olympic gold medals in individual events (11), and Olympic medals in individual events for a male (13). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took the record away from fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz (7) for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single Games record. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps won four golds and two silver medals, making him the most successful athlete of the Games for the third Olympics in a row.

MICHAEL JOHNSON In the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Michael Johnson took home two gold medals while crushing two world records along the way. First was the 400-meter race, where he whipped around the track in 43.49 seconds. With only a few days rest in between, Johnson came back to the track to take gold in the 200-meter sprint, becoming the first man to win both races in the same Olympic Games.

SIR CHRISTOPHER ANDREW HOY DAN JANSEN Sometimes, the best victories are worth waiting for. Ten years after his Olympic debut, speed skater Dan Jansen finally won the gold he had fought so hard for. After falling short in Sarajevo, Calgary (racing the afternoon after his sister’s death), and Albertville, Jansen finally struck gold in the 1,000 meter event in Lillehammer. Hoy is eleven-times a world champion and six-times an Olympic champion. With a total of seven Olympic medals, six gold and one silver, Hoy is the most decorated Olympic cyclist of all time. With his three gold medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics, Hoy became Scotland’s most successful Olympian, the first British athlete to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games since Henry Taylor in 1908, and the most successful Olympic cyclist of all time. After winning a further two gold medals (in the keirin and team sprint) at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Hoy has won more Olympic gold medals (six), and total medals (seven, tied with fellow cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins) than any other British athlete.

AND DEVELOPMENT Just in time for the Olympics, PowerUp had an exclusive interview with His Excellency Simon Martin, the British Ambassador to Bahrain who is not just into sports and fitness, but has also been involved in the 2012 London Olympic Games. This is his take on sports, excellence, and legacy.

1 DO?

DO YOU LIKE SPORTS? WHAT SPORTS DO YOU

Yes I love sports. I have been a sportsman all my life. When I was younger, I enjoyed playing tennis, hockey, golf and cricket. I have played all those sports here in Bahrain except hockey. In my spare time I swim, run and cycle principally for fitness as I am now beyond my competitive age. I love joining the Bahrain Road Runners as they are very inclusive and are very positive in promoting sports and fitness in Bahrain. I also had great fun participating in the Colour Run organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs.

I HEARD THAT YOU WERE VERY MUCH INVOLVED WITH THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS; CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS?

2

I was in charge of the international visitors and head of states. Being a part of the London 2012 Olympic Games gave me a good window with which to view the power of the Olympics. It is very rare to see 86 Heads of States in one event. The Olympics is all about the legacy that we pass on to future generations, and the British government’s investment in the 2012 London Olympic infrastructure is now paying off. I lived near the Olympic Park in East London and I have seen how it developed from a wasteland to what it is right now. It shows the power of sports if you get it right.

ONE- ON-ONE

THE MINIOLYMPICS IS A LEGACY BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE BRITISH EMBASSY. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS EVENT?

3

During the London 2012 Olympic Games, the British embassy in Bahrain created events that were very prominent such as the Mini Olympics 2012 and the screening of the Olympic Games opening at the City Centre Bahrain Mall . More than 300 guests were present at the Mini Olympics, including members of the sporting community, the schoolchildren who participated in the Mini Olympics, and their families.

and athletics by making a concerted effort to develop athletes. Bahrain justifiably claims to be the home of motorsports in the Middle East, as it was the first country to bring Formula 1 to the region. Investment in sport infrastructure encourages greater involvement of the community in sports. This is the type of investment model that really works.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE A MESSAGE TO THE BAHRAINI ATHLETES WHO WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN THE 2016 RIO OLYMPICS?

My message for the athletes is that their country is proud of them and that they have a very important role to play in the development of the nation. This event aimed to connect youth to the inspirational power of the games to ingtegrate sports in their daily lives and promote the values of equality, peace and reconciliation through sports. This is part of the legacy that Bahrain is continuing through the Mini Olympics this year which I was happy to see. I hope that the London 2012 Olympic games has played a role to serve as an inspiration and give a legacy to the Bahraini athletes who are a part of the delegation this year.

DO YOU SEE BAHRAIN BEING A SPORTS HUB AND HOW IMPORTANT IS SPORTS TO THE COMMUNITY?

We have already seen Bahrain actively promoting sports such as triathlon @powerupmag

proud of them and that they have a very important role to play in the development of the nation. I remember meeting Paralympic athlete Fatima Nedham at this year’s Majlis for Bahrain Mobility International, and I was struck by her energy and positive attitude. In a country like Bahrain where the weather conditions are challenging, I am very impressed by how Bahraini sports have developed. I hope that the London 2012 Olympic Games have contributed to this. I am amazed at the level of public enthusiasm and participation in sports, which I may add include the British embassy’s involvement in events like the Rotary Relay Marathon and IRONMAN 70.3 Bahrain! We hope Bahraini athletes will return from the games an inspiration to a new generation of Bahrainis who are ready to represent their

country abroad and reach the highest levels of sporting achievement.

THE BRITISH EMBASSY IS CELEBRATING 200 YEARS IN BAHRAIN, WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT ITS RELATIONS WITH BAHRAIN?

6

Britain is currently celebrating 200 years of formal relationship with Bahrain. One will see a reminder of this relationship everywhere in Bahrain, and the United Kingdom is considered as a second home by many Bahrainis. We have

left sporting legacies dating back decades. Awali Cricket Club (ACC), the oldest cricket club in the GCC founded in 1935, recently celebrated its 80th anniversary with the world’s oldest cricket club, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from England founded in 1787. In addition to Cricket, Football has also became a large part of Bahraini sports. Indeed, a lot of locals followed England and Wales playing during the UEFA EURO 2016. The UK Football Association works closely with the Bahrain Football Association. All of this serves to develop BritishBahrain relationships.

BAHRAIN AT THE Fahad Abdulrazaq’s age proves no barrier to his dreams.

P

rogress is not always visible and sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward. In mixed martial arts, this old saying is especially poignant because all fighters will suffer defeat in their amateur career, and this is part of becoming a wellrounded mixed martial artist. This attitude is never more important than at the IMMAF World Championships where the very best amateur fighters in the world step up and fight each other, and many of the losing fighters will still become stars in the sport.

50 | PowerUp | August 2016

Yet in Las Vegas, there was one Bahraini boy who was not willing to take a single step back, both inside the ring and metaphorically. Team Bahrain endured a brave, battling, but ultimately bruising first day at the IMMAF World Championships. Abdullah Alfayez, was stricken by a fungi infection, three men suffered defeat, Hussein Ayyad, Ali Ebrahimi and Mohammed Adnan. The standards at this year’s Championships were exceptional, as pointed out by the ever-present, two-time IMMAF World Champion Jose

“Shorty” Torres. Torres also said with absolute certainty that these men who fought for Bahrain will no doubt learn from their experience at the elite level, and return stronger, better fighters. Despite the disappointment on the first day, there was a silver lining in this cloud. His name was Fahad Abdulrazaq, who produced a memorable performance, showing grit, determination and skill in his dismantling of Britain’s Warren Mason. It was breathtaking to watch and despite being the youngest fighter in Team Bahrain, in his first World Championship, he

shone the brightest light into the progress being made at KHK MMA. “It was a new feeling for me, fighting in these championships, competing at the highest amateur level and I was very excited in the build-up and during the tournament. I had prepared very well for it throughout the year with my coaches at KHK MMA and I was confident. I had also had a couple of fights before the world championships which boosted my confidence and experience levels even more before I travelled to Vegas. So you could say I was ready.”

www.powerup-mag.com

MMA

Abdulrazaq forced a very highly regarded British fighter to retire from the fight, but it wasn’t’ going to get any easier for him. He prepared himself to face Bulgarian powerhouse on day 2 as Abdulla Seena – the only other remaining Bahraini - stepped up for his first round match and suffered a heart breaking split decision defeat. Fahad, whose fight was agonizingly delayed until the third day, was the only Bahraini left in the competition and the winner of his fight with Nikolay Ivaylov – a lot was at stake. From the moment the bell rang for the first round in this fight, Fahad fought with purpose, always attacking with controlled aggression. His technical skill, attacking from the outside with high kicks, and punch combinations, was spectacular. Then when the fight went to the ground, his wrestling and Jiu Jitsu skills were outstanding. Even when he was on his back, with his opponent on top of him, he was attacking with various submission attempts and was always a threat. Then there was his heart. Fahad already had the heart of a champion, because he refuses to give up no matter how much pain he is enduring. He was caught, by Ivaylov, in an arm-bar submission attempt, which could have been extremely painful and forced him to quit. But he endured the pain, squirmed free and continued on his mission. Soon after the start of round two, Fahad landed a monstrous kick to the head which the Bulgarian never saw coming, knocking him to the ground and beginning the sequence on the ground, which led to Fahad securing a textbook arm-bar submission of his own. This arm-bar was so beautifully executed, any JiuJitsu practitioner would

@powerupmag

be proud of it. Fahad made history in securing Bahrain’s first medal on this prestigious stage, and he did it in style,

making everyone take notice of this small country, making big progress in MMA. Even in his silver medal

SPORTS & FITNESS

fight with Irishman David Fogarty, Fahad gave everything he had and lost a razor-thin, technical battle where most of the fight took place on the ground. He never stopped attacking, never got bullied and was always dangerous in the fight. It simply came down to how long each fighter was in a more dominant position. The result didn’t matter, as he stepped up on the medal podium, at the age of 19 having represented Bahrain and KHK MMA, HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and all his team-mates who had helped him to get there. “When I saw my friends,

“My goal is to push on from here, become a better fighter and help my country one day get to the highest level in the sport.” family and coaches there so happy for my achievement it was a very special moment for me. To know that all their encouragement, and their blood, sweat and tears were not in vain. We all got a lot of experience from fighting at this level against the best in the world, and I am sure now that I am in the right weight class, where I am meant to be. My goal is to push on from here, become a better fighter and help my country one day get to the highest level in the sport.”

May Al Haji is the quintessential strong woman, juggling sports, work, and a family.

ometimes we are forced to watch cartoons with our kids, and without noticing it begin humming the theme song from the series as well. Perhaps you don’t want to admit it, but I will, I used to hum Barney songs “I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family!” Everybody loves Barney! But that’s not all, there was a time that I got hooked to a cartoon series called Avatar: The Last Air Bender. Avatar The Last Air Bender (which is different from the movie of the same name), was about a special kid, the last of a tribe that had the power to use water, air, and fire, something which was obviously very unique. He was going to learn how to use his unique tri powers to defeat evil. Somehow, this reminded me of May Al Haji, so I decided to sit with her 54 | PowerUp | August 2016

and talk about how in the world is she able to perform extremely well in sports, work, andfamily! May works at Zain Telecom Company. She has two kids, and is also a triathlete. She is able to juggle all these duties extremely well. When we walk into our offices in the morning, May would have already been up for at least four hours. She would have prepared her kids’ meals for school, dressed them up, went for a run or a swim, had her breakfast, and went to work. 9am is more like midday to May! While triathlon is known to cause a strain in a man’s relationship with his wife, due to his excessive and unnecessary purchases and always being being busy in training and tired at home, May says that women have an advantage because husbands don’t always call during training and ask “Where are

you?” or “When will you be home?” #LOL It seems like everything in May’s life is X3. At work, Zain is continuously battling with Batelco and VIVA. Whenever there is a new product launch, I ask May about it and she says that she has been working tirelessly on it for a while, to bring something that cannot be matched by competitors. May loves to work at Zain, not only do they support her, they are actually her sponsors as well! #Jealous I was a bit more curious about her part within her family and how it fits in with her work and training, so I asked her to divulge a bit more information. May says that to finish her kids’ homework fast, she tells them they need to play a game that includes finishing in under 15 minutes, that’s so smart! She performs all her required religious duties, which

includes being the perfect wife to her husband Nizar (Bu Yousef). And what’s surprising is that she believes that being always busy in all three is what actually makes her perform well in all. #Philosophical Here’s the shocking thing that I found out though, the person who helped her go from being a national tennis player to a runner and to a triathlete was actually me, because I had answered her email back in 2011 that she sent asking about running, which was then forwarded to the general Bahrain Road Runners email. I was BRR’s chairman back then. The Last Air Bender was about unique powers in a person who is the last of a long chain, May however wants to inspire and become the first of a long line of Arab women with unique super powers X3.

FORMULA 4 MOTORWORLD

PowerUp sat with the General Manager of Bahrain Motor Federation, Mr Abdulaziz Al Thawadi. He was one of the few people selected to be the Race Director of Formula 4 at the SMP F4 NEZ (North East Europe Zone) Championship.

MOTORSPORTS RAGES IN HIS BLOOD Mr. Thawadi’s passion in motorsports started with rally racing in the 80s in Bahrain. In 2002 when Bahrain decided to host the Gulf Air Formula 1 Grand Prix he started getting more involved in motorsports and even attended several international trainings to be part of the team at the inaugural Bahrain Formula 1. He is the founder of the Motorsports Marshalls Club which started in 2004 and has been elected as the Secretary General from 2004 – 2014. He is also the General Manager of the Bahrain Motor Federation since 2006 and is a member of the FIA volunteers and official commission.

60 | PowerUp | August 2016

THE SELECTION Mr. Thawadi said the selection was done through a nomination process and he was quite ecstatic when he heard the news that he had been selected to be the Race Director of the Formula 4 NEZ (North East Europe Zone) Championship. He said, “It is one of the greatest achievements that I have attained in motorsport so far. Being a part of a wellknown championship highly supported by FIA is a great opportunity. I consider myself very lucky to be part of and really happy to be with such a great family”.

RACE DIRECTOR ROLE There is usually only one

race director assigned for a championship which consists of seven rounds wherein each round has three races. As Race Director, Mr. Thawadi is in charge of giving orders during the race including awarding penalties. He is also responsible for implementing the safety and regulations during the race and further penalties that need to be taken and reported to the steward. Mr. Thawadi said, “The toughest part of sitting there and being the race director is that the life of the drivers is in my hands and I need to make decisions in a matter of seconds. If something goes wrong I need to make sure that I am giving the right penalty. In terms of safety I need to ensure that all safety aspects are followed within

the code of motorsports.” He added, “The role is a bit challenging. First of all I have to know all the regulations by heart. This includes all the details of the championships, the drivers, studying the tracks before working on the track. It is also a challenge dealing with tracks you don’t know and management you have to adjust to.”

FORMULA 4 HISTORY Formula 4 was launched in 2014 by the FIA. The race was formed to provide young racing drivers a platform to continue to the next level after karting, to the world of single-seater racing which is Formula 3 then Formula 1. It allows drivers to develop and enhance their driving

skills and prepare them to use higher technology single seater cars. The Formula 4 cars have been designed to keep costs down while providing an ideal learning tool for young drivers who have never raced cars before. According to Mr. Thawadi, Formula 4 will be coming to the Middle East soon.

Within two years of its establishment, the F4 is gaining popularity with its inaugural race at the Italian F4 Championship. Currently, there are 12 races worldwide and it will be in the Middle East (F4 UAE Championship) by October.

SMP FORMULA 4 NEZ (NORTH EAST EUROPE ZONE) CHAMPIONSHIP The series consists of seven rounds and so far there are four rounds of races that happened, first in Sochi, 2ndand 3rd at Zandvoort with the 4th round being held in Moscow. There will be three more rounds to go which is Moscow Sweden and the final race will be in Finland. The season starts in April and ends in September 11. The NEZ Championship started with 15 drivers last year and this year there are already 20 drivers starting from the age of 15. This year after round 1 in Sochi, Richard Verschoor was selected as a RedBull junior driver in the F4 NEZfor his outstanding performance in round . The FIA has put a lot of energy for the Formula 4 Championships to flourish and to be a cost-effective series. The SMP Formula

4 NEZ Championship has supported the FIA project, gathering as much strength and partners as possible around the Championship, to create a strong series for the future. Therefore, in that line, the SMP Formula 4 Championship is offering a full season of 21 races and an intensive educational program for 150.000€. It also offers a grant/season in FIA F3 lights. The 2016 winner prize money was 350.000€ for Niko Kari who is now a RedBull junior driver. For a long time, men have dominated the bodybuilding world. Now, a female is making strides to change our perspective on muscles.

T

here is a revolution in progress. The development of the muscular female body is changing our culture’s views of what is considered attractive in women’s bodies. Meet Hayley Biddle, 40 years of age with three daughters and who has had a lifelong passion for bodybuilding, fitness and nutrition. She walks the talk and has more than 20 years of experience in weight training with a physique to match. Her own

impressive track record for transforming herself physically has turned many heads and landed her some enviable endorsements. She has competed in the Australian Natural Body Building Championships in 2013 and undertook different genres of fitness classes such as Les Mills Grit, Bodypump and RPM and has also competed in half marathons and more recently finished 3rd place in the Yamba Triathlon Series held in Australia in 2014. She’s a real person with real-life circumstances and she understands how daunting the challenge of achieving specific fitness goals can be. She’s had to bring herself back to competitive form time and time again after gaining excess weight with each of her

some cancers and even reproductive problems, can all be reduced by losing weight and keeping fit. Her main form of training is lifting weights 6 days a week with her Master Trainer, Abbas (Instagram @abbas_fit). Every woman starting out should find a trainer they feel comfortable with and spend a few weeks with them to get used to the machines and environment. She says “It’s an investment you will never regret. I have met many great trainers in Bahrain, and apart from my trainer, right now I’m seeing some amazing results also being achieved by Srdjan Lasak (Instagram @srdjanlasak) who I also recommend for women wanting to make changes in their body.

pregnancies. A busy Mother to three youngsters, she also understands how hard it is to stick to a nutritious and balanced eating plan, not to mention finding the time and energy to follow a strict training routine.

FITNESS APPROACH

Her approach to health and fitness reflects a permanent lifestyle change, not just a temporary adjustment and she is willing to give what it takes to help show that hitting the gym and lifting weights is not just a man’s game anymore. She hopes to arm local women with the tools to stay fit and healthy for life. Obesity-related illnesses such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes,

ADVICE

So if you are just starting out and not sure where to start, try meeting with the trainers at your local gym and go from there. Just remember, every fit person you see has walked through the gym doors for the first time at one stage! So please don’t be afraid or intimidated. I’m lucky because I have seen perspectives from both sides, as a trainer and also a client, and I can proudly say, that as a trainer we respect the courage it takes for newcomers to join the gym and take their health and fitness serious. We love seeing this”. “Please ladies, continue to lift. Every day, you’re getting a little bit stronger than the negative people trying to keep you from coming back to the gym”. DINING

HEALTHY EATS PowerUp is on a quest to find healthy eating establishments around Bahrain. Every month, we scour the streets of Manama to come up with healthy dining alternatives for our readers. This month, we tried Hevea Cafe as part of our culinary adventures.

T

his month, we sat down with Guy Gateau, Head Chef and General Manager of Hevea Café to sample some of their culinary selections. Super health-conscious people are afraid to dine at restaurants thinking there are no healthy options for them. But, you may be surprised at the variety of options available from unlikely establishments. We all know that good nutrition and diet is the ultimate key to achieving a healthy body. But how do you define healthy? The media and society gives a misrepresentation of what is healthy by defining ‘healthy’ based on a person’s body structure. Slim and thin is what we as a society consider

as healthy. However, for Guy Gateau, a person’s body structure is not the sole indicator of overall health. People also have the misconception that they have to deny themselves certain food to be fit. Food is made to be indulgent and when you eat luscious food, it stirs your comfort level and makes you feel good and relaxed. Chef Guy said, “The secret of staying healthy lies on the amount of food you eat and your state of mind while you are eating.” He also quoted Marc David who specialized in nutrition psychology, “Relaxation is the optimum state for digestion and assimilation and day to day calorie burning. Any time we pleasure the system through taste, touch, music, or company, we’re regulating

the emotional and social metabolism, as well as the regulating your nutritional metabolism.” When one enters Hévéa Café, you’ll right away feel comfortable with the restaurant’s stylish French décor that radiates warmth and comfort. Although Chef Guy was given the free reign in incorporating his expertise, the owners Mr. Khalid Al Shakrawi and his wife Abeer were very much hands-on in the creation of the menu with their unique palate. Hevea serves Asian cuisine with a French Flair whilst keeping in mind the Mediterranean flavour. They currently have 72 items on their menu so customers will not run out of choices and can definitely find something healthy. Chef Guy said, “We buy only fresh

foods and select the best ingredients we can find. We focus on great teas and coffees, and the freshest inspired mocktails.” We tried two delicious and healthy selections from their kitchen which we highly recommend. The Caprese salad was warm and tangy, and bursting with flavor. The roasted eggplant was perfectly offset by the mozzarella and the fresh, juicy tomatoes. The charcoal grilled salmon steak was another revelation. Simply, perfectly cooked, and minimally seasoned, it needed only a few drops of lemon to make it a meal. WHAT IS DIABETES?

STAY SUPER The World Health Organization (WHO) has come up with a series of eye-catching and thought provoking campaigns aimed at ending the dreaded diabetes disease.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs when the pancreas do not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to an increased concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia). Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent or childhood-onset diabetes) is characterized by a lack of insulin production. Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulindependent or adult-onset diabetes) is caused by the body’s ineffective use of insulin. It often results from excess body weight and physical inactivity. Gestational diabetes is hyperglycaemia that is first recognized during pregnancy.

DIABETES

HEALTH & WELLNESS

WHAT ARE THE COMMON CONSEQUENCES OF DIABETES? Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. In a multinational study, 50% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease (primarily heart disease and stroke) Combined with reduced blood flow, neuropathy (nerve damage) in the feet, diabetes increases the chances of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation. Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness, and occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. One percent of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes. Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure.

HOW CAN THE BURDEN OF DIABETES BE REDUCED?

PREVENTION

Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should:

@powerupmag

achieve and maintain healthy body weight; be physically active – at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control; eat a healthy diet of between three and five servings of fruit and vegetables a day and reduce sugar and saturated fats intake; avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

“...Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days and a healthy diet can drastically reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. ” DIABETES FAST FACTS About 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. There is an emerging global epidemic of diabetes that can be traced back to rapid increases in overweight people including obesity and physical inactivity. Diabetes is predicted to become the 7th leading cause of death in the world by the year 2030. Total deaths from diabetes are projected to rise by more than 50% in the next 10 years. There are two major forms of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is characterized by a lack of insulin production and Type 2 diabetes results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. A third type of disease is gestational diabetes. This type is characterized by hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, with values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes, occurring during pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. They are also at an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes in the future. Type 2 Diabetes is much more common than Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 accounts for around 90%

of all diabetes worldwide. Reports of Type 2 diabetes in children—previously rare— have increased worldwide. In some countries, it accounts for almost half of newly diagnosed cases in children and adolescents. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for between 50% and 80% of deaths in people with diabetes. Diabetes has become one of the major causes of premature illness and death in most countries, mostly through increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In 2012 diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths. 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middleincome countries. In developed countries, most people with diabetes are above the age of retirement, whereas in developing countries those most frequently affected are aged between 35 and 64. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, amputation, and kidney failure. Lack of awareness about diabetes, combined with insufficient access to health services and essential medicines can lead to complications such as blindness, amputation, and kidney failure. EXPERT TIPS

TIPS FROM THE

EXPERTS

This monthly feature answers reader’s questions from top medical and fitness experts

DR. MALHOTRA is an Orthopedic surgeon at International Hospital of Bahrain.

Of course we know that exercise is good, but how can we exercise properly so as to get the most benefit from our physical activity? PowerUp sat down with Dr. Dilip Malhotra from International Hospital of Bahrain to discuss.

SPORTS INJURIES WE OFTEN HEAR OF PHYSICAL INJURY BECAUSE OF OVERUSE OF CERTAIN MUSCLES, IS IT ALSO POSSIBLE TO INJURE/ AGGRAVATE MUSCLES FROM UNDERUSE? Underuse or inactivity is the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal injuries. You get hurt while performing a movement your body is unfamiliar with. Our bodies work by ‘use it’ or ‘lose it’ principle. If we don’t use our muscles, they can tighten, shorten and weaken, putting us at risk of injury. Another example is returning to even routine exercises after a long layoff.

PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT PHYSICAL TRAUMA. This simply means any physical injury to the body, as from physical violence or an accident and ranges from a minor to a severe form. It results in an unpleasant experience, often resulting in multiple complications and could be life threatening. Trauma can be to the soft tissues, bones or the vital organs.

IN THE DAILY COURSE OF LIFE, AND OF COURSE THE AGING PROCESS; THE WEAR AND TEAR OF THE BODY IS INEVITABLE; WHAT STEPS CAN BE TAKEN BY PEOPLE TO HELP THEMSELVES AGE GRACEFULLY? From the Musculo-skeletal point of view, there are two main issues: Arthritis (wear and tear of the joints) and Osteoporosis (brittle bones). Many ‘age related’ changes result from disuse; muscles shrink and lose mass, tendons lose water content, become stiffer and less able to withstand stress and are therefore more prone to injuries. Exercise helps maintain body response time, joint flexibility, muscle mass and strength. Moderate activity for 30 -40 minutes involving stretching, swimming, walking and bicycling are enough to maintain fitness as we age.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF INJURIES IN THE UPPER/ LOWER EXTREMITIES AND HOW CAN THESE BE

AVOIDED? Household injuries are different from Sports injuries. Different parts of the body get injured in different sports. In a large study of sports injuries, the most common sports involved were football followed by distance running, basketball/netball, racket sports and, track and field events. The most commonly injured region was the knee followed by various upper limb injuries. Most frequent diagnosis was overuse/ inflammation followed by ligament sprains, muscle strains and third degree tears

SOMETIMES PEOPLE PUT TOO MUCH STRESS ON THEIR BODY, HOW CAN THEY WORK WITH THEIR BODY SO AS NOT TO INCREASE THEIR CHANCES OF GETTING INJURED? A beginner should get a Personal Trainer to start an exercise program and progress gradually under his/her guidance. Adequate warm up is essential. You should Cross Train i.e. diversify your exercise routine. Train smart; too much

too soon is the number one reason why injuries occur. You should gradually increase your time and intensity. Wear proper workout attire. Eat a balanced diet and hydrate well. Listen to your body when it needs rest and recovery.

DO YOU RECOMMEND PEOPLE DO HOMETREATMENT OR TAKE OVER THE COUNTER PILLS FOR SPORTS INJURIES? It depends on the nature of the injury. Most minor soft tissue injuries (sprains and strains) require RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) and OTC (Over the Counter) pain medication. Expert advice is required if the progress is slow. Professional athletes usually seek immediate expert attention.

GEAR

RUN IN COMFORT AND STYLE

Running is an inherently cool sport. To be sure you keep your cool, Compressport has some gear that will keep you covered and comfy.

R

unning is a very unique sport. Unique in the sense that you can effectively put your shoes on, and run out the front door. There is no mess and no fuss. But as with all sports, there are plenty of things that you can do to make your run a bit more comfortable. For me, Compressport is one of those brands that offer it all. As the name suggests, Compressport is more than just a sports clothing company. Their clothing is geared toward muscle and joint support as well as improving venous return and muscle oxygenation. Simply put, it tries to optimise the blood flow to your muscles. What does this mean? It means that you can recover quicker and fatigue less during your run; reducing muscle damage and enabling you to train more often. Compressport has different clothing for different parts of the body, each specifically designed for that muscle

group. When running, your legs are the most mobile part of your body and therefore demand the most room for movement. They are also your biggest consumer of energy. The Compressport Trail Running Shorts are the ideal high performance shorts for running. They add support to you leg muscles when you strike the ground reducing the muscle damage and also increasing blood flow, allowing you to run harder for longer. If you aren’t a fan of running in tights, then you can also use them with the new ultralight Overshorts. You won’t even know they are there. A very popular garment for runners is a calf compression sleeve. The Compressport Calf R2v2 serves so many purposes during your run that I cannot start a run without them. They give you muscle support, recovery, protection from the sun, increased blood flow and even protection from scratches and cuts for the trail runners out there.

Book a cycling experience through 74 | PowerUp | August 2016

A running shirt that has pockets for my energy gels and car keys? A running shirt that can relieve the pressure on my shoulders from my backpack? Say no more! The Compressport Trail Running top is more than just a running top. It is ultra lightweight and functional. My view on this is why use a normal running or gym top when you can use one specifically designed to make your run more comfortable. And if it makes me look good while doing it, count me in! I must admit that I do love funky socks. Socks are a very underestimated piece of clothing for a runner. In my experience, it’s often a runners feet that causes the most discomfort. Breathability in your feet can make or break your run. Compressport has designed ultra lightweight socks allowing your feet to breath and also reducing the weight that you lift with each stride, saving you energy and making your run that much more comfortable. A visor is simply a must

for any runner in the GCC. It performs so many vital tasks for such a small item making it impossible to leave off your running list. Visors protect your eyes from the sun, allowing your face muscles to relax, reducing stress. It also protects your face from getting burnt and stops the sweat from getting into your eyes. Compressport even makes an Ultralight version for race enthusiasts. Possibly my favourite item from Compressport is the Ultrun Hydration Backpack. This thing is simply amazing! The amount of water, additional storage and spares that you can fit into such a light and compact backpack blows my mind. At only 140grams, with 10 pockets, a whistle and the ability to store hiking poles and water bottles it is more than you will ever need. It fits like a t-shirt and you won’t even know that it is there. For more information: Trilife +973 7733 3777 info@gotrilife.com

THE SPRAY

TAN

We all know the dangers of skin cancer associated with baking in the sun. This is why spray tanning is an enviable solution. Check out all its many benefits.

S

pray tanning has got to be the easiest form of tanning there is. Compared to baking in the sun or lying in a tanning bed for three hours, you can have your| tan quickly, easily, and safely.

NO WORRIES ABOUT SKIN CANCER

The artificial colorant does not cause damage to the skin as UV rays from the sun can. The chemical in tanning sprays is called DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and is approved by the FDA as a safe product to apply to the skin.

QUICK RESULTS

Spray tans take only a few hours to fully develop, so it’s good to do before a party or a big event. @powerupmag

*Not recommended for pregnant women and people with allergic reactions.

EVEN COVERAGE AND COLOR CONTROL

Spray on tans provide even coverage which looks more natural than red and sunburnt skin. More importantly, you can adjust the shade of tan that you want, no guesswork involved.

CONFIDENCE BOOST

Healthy, bronzed skin helps you look thinner and healthier, instantly boosting self-confidence. It also hides blemishes and imperfections, including stretch marks and varicose veins. For more information: Gloss Salon +973 1782 6030

Protect your eyes underwater with goggles. Make sure chlorinated water does not get to your hair. Whether you’re sunbathing or swimming, choose a swimsuit that fits and is comfortable. For both boys and girls, make sure that your trunks are lightweight so you don’t get bogged down in the water. Carry all your essentials in a ventilated mesh bag to make sure it dries easily. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, you can always find some uses for the kickboard. For long distance and open water swims, keep your body warm with a wetsuit. Of course, never forget to pack your towel. Protect your skin from the aftereffects of being in the sun with sunscreen. And make sure you have flip flops for easy beach walking.

APPS

THE TECH OLYMPIAN Though you may not be as strong, fit, or tough as them; you can still aspire to your own dreams of glory. And to help you with that, we have the following apps to help you become fitter, leaner, and stronger.

YONDER

RUN SOCIAL

ENDOMONDO

MOVES

Think of this like Yelp for the outdoor enthusiast. Enter your location and find dozens of suggestions for hiking, biking, kayaking, and skiing with reviews and tips from fellow outdoorsmen and women. (Free; iOS and Android).

RunSocial is a specialized iOS app that displays routes from around the world and syncs your position on the route according to how far you’ve run on the treadmill. The HD graphics are terrific and the app is free! However, you’ll have to pay access to specialized routes like Tuscany, Tibet, Sequoia National Park, and Death Valley.

Endomondo tracks your runs, bike rides, and other outdoor activities with good accuracy and a simple interface. Its training plans and coaching features, which are limited to Premium subscribers, definitely improve the Endomondo experience.

This one serves as a reminder that all those little steps add up. This pedometer tracks your day, minute by minute, and gives you a summary of all your movements, steps, stairs, and even pedals. It calculates your calories burned and presents it as an easy to read timeline to keep things simple and distraction free.
