FOREWORD
BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD
teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to
“HEALTH IS A LIFESTYLE AND I CHOSE IT.” HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa
from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact,
sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

POWERUP | AUGUST 2017
arriott Executive Apartments is not your typical hotel. As their name suggests, they feature apartments instead of standard hotel rooms, but you still get the Marriott hotel services. The first thing we noticed is its strategic location. This apartmenthotel is in the heart of Juffair surrounded by everything a person needs when staying away from home. It is conveniently close to a variety of restaurants, malls, hospitals and speciality stores. Upon checking-in, we were warmly greeted by the staff giving a welcoming feeling to guests. Checking-in was a breeze using their uber Mobile Check-in. We have stayed in numerous hotels and apartments, but we were still surprised as we entered our Marriott two bedroom apartment. The place is huge! The unit boasts a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, a living room, spacious bedrooms, two bathrooms and our favourite, two balconies with a view of the city. After a satisfying rest, we proceeded to have a tour around the property. Our gracious hosts met us for a sumptuous lunch at Skywalk Café, located on the ground floor of the hotel. The hospitality is consistent everywhere within the
property. The restaurant staff are amiable and welcoming as they guided us through their delicious lunch menu. Throughout lunch, we had an entertaining conversation with our hosts. We can see that they are happy working here. The entire property oozes with the kind of warmth you feel at home while enjoying the luxury of staying in a Marriott hotel. We then proceeded to check out the facilities. This property has room for meetings and conferences that can even cater to small social functions. A wellequipped gymnasium and access to a steam and sauna room are available for all guests and residents. The last one we visited is their outdoor pool with an incredible view. The city skyline charmed us along with the rooftop’s temperature controlled adult swimming pool and a smaller pool for kids. This place also has barbeque corner equipped with barbeque grills, which residents can use for their social gatherings. Our sleep as one would expect was fantastic. Upon checkout, we extended our sincere gratitude for a wonderful experience along with a solemn promise of return. ister Madonna Buder, the nun who gained worldwide fame as ‘The Iron Nun’ for her iconic participation at a succession of triathlons and Ironmansacross the globe, is to join the speaker list for the acclaimed international Conference of Sports for Women (ICSW) that will be held in Dubai this November. She will take part in a panel discussion titled “Sports Across Generations: Opportunities and Challenges.” Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Sister Madonna was active from an early age and became an equestrian champion, but she was never the seasoned athlete she is today. At 23she decided to follow her “true calling” by becoming a nun, and joined a convent in her home town.Years later, she met a priest who advised her to take up running which he had found to be of great benefit to the body and mind. Soon the activity became a passion too for Sister Madonna and she grew adamant that she wanted to take part in a running race. After having completed her first race in 1978, she heard about the Ironman triathlon and, despite the difficult challenge, particularly at a time when conditions were much harsher for athletes, she was willing to take it on. Sister Madonna completed her very first triathlon at the age of 52 in Spokane, Washington, using a bike that was obtained by a benefactor at a Police auction, and by swimming through cold waters without the use of a wetsuit. As of today, she has completed over 377triathlons, including 45 Ironman races, an extraordinary feat which has earned her the title‘The Iron Nun’. In
2012, at the age of 82, she broke the record for being the oldest person to complete an Ironman triathlon after finishing the Subaru Ironman Canada and, in 2014, she was inducted into the U.S. Triathlon Hall of Fame. Away from her life as a triathlete and a nun, Sister Madonna is also a motivational speaker who seeks to spread her message of positivity and love to the entire world. She also contributes to a number of charities and non-profit organisations and volunteers to help inmates at the county jail in Spokane, where her ministry is located. Of her participation at ICSW 2017, Sister Madonna says: “I truly admire the conference’s effort to inspire others and to help build a better future for all. I don’t like to refer to myself as an inspiration, but I do believe in my duty to encourage others to become the happiest and most positive versions of themselves that they can be; and that is why I’m happy to be coming to Abu Dhabi this November to help spread this message for the future generations.” “I’ve learned a lot through my journey,” continued Sister Madonna. “I am now 86 and I still feel like there is a lot more to learn. Through ICSW I’m not only looking to share the lessons and experiences, I have gained but to learn about others and grow from hearing about the unique perspectives they have to offer. It’s very important always to have this kind of space where everyone can share their experiences, hopes and dreams to create a constructive dialogue that helps us all better understand ourselves and others to build a better future.”
“AS OF TODAY, SHE HAS COMPLETED OVER 377 TRIATHLONS, INCLUDING 45 IRONMAN RACES, AN EXTRAORDINARY FEAT WHICH HAS EARNED HER THE TITLE‘THE IRON NUN’. IN 2012, AT THE AGE OF 82, SHE BROKE THE RECORD FOR BEING THE OLDEST PERSON TO COMPLETE AN IRONMAN TRIATHLON AFTER FINISHING THE SUBARU IRONMAN CANADA AND, IN 2014, SHE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE U.S. TRIATHLON HALL OF FAME.” First organized by the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy (FBMA) in 2012, ICSW has grown to become an internationally-acclaimed platform to discuss all topics related to women’s sports. It seeks to address the most pertinent issues that women face in the world of sport, and to promote H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak’s vision for sport to become a part of daily life for UAE national women. The fourth edition of the conference is set to take place from 6-7 November at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) under the theme “Inspiring Generations”. The conference will feature an array of keynote speeches, panel discussions and workshops, all revolving around the event theme, in addition to a marketplace featuring exhibits from sponsors and other organizations from within the sports industry.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
WE BUILD WARRIORS! Arts and practices that dated back for over hundreds of years throughout generations of mankind’s history. The very pillars that man had to thrive for to build and sustain a balance between mind, body and soul. Where the beauty of one’s strength and natural survival instincts come to collide in a battle of epic proportions to shape the very warrior that had always resided within you. So what are you waiting for?
HOW IT CAME TO BE:
In the heart of the kingdom of Bahrain, Thai Martial Arts Academy is where you will discover your inner warrior by learning varieties of self-defence techniques and understanding how to exercise your body properly to gain true warrior’s shape and heart. The academy was founded in 2013 by master trainer Omran Abdulrahman who dedicated his body and soul to these long lost forms of art, which his country lacked. It is said to be that this academy was the first of its kind in Bahrain, introducing the kingdom to a unique combination of fight/self-defense and strength training.
WHAT WE STAND FOR:
With a purpose to raise awareness that there is more in Bahrain than just your traditional gym equipment and weight-lifting. They strived to pioneer a whole new community of athletes in Bahrain over the years, which is growing strong and spreading out for the future generations to come. Moreover, by 2014 the Academy had collaborated with “WCO” (World Calisthenics Organization) to kick-start a local workshop for callisthenics. It turned out to be a great
22
POWERUP | AUGUST 2017
success that the Academy became the first ever to launch official calisthenics classes here in Bahrain that is still running to this day— coached by Yousif Hameed.
WARRIORS IN TRAINING WILL BE INTRODUCED TO TWO MAIN CATEGORIES WITHIN THE ACADEMY’S OFFERING: The traditional arts of Muay Thai fighting. The art of bodyweight training known as “Calisthenics”.
With these two categories, many sub-categories would fall under each, depending on the cycle of routine changes that occur every week to keep the trainees well-invested and driven to pursue levels they’d only dreamed of achieving ever since they started. For fighting and self-defence, there’s an array of traditional and authentic training methods displayed under Muay Thai that could vary from different forms of clinching, blocking, dodging and striking all from the master trainer’s years of experience, which he brought home from the skirts of Thailand.

f you need a strong stimulant to wake you up full, it means you have lost connection with your internal compass; with the spirit. Similarly taking sleeping pills means no nervous system calmness. No wonder we are so tense. We are so tired inside that we need coffee to stay present. How many of us are addicted to social media to the extent that we need to be honked at traffic to realise that the light has turned green? How restless we are with all this in our lives. Do we have time to connect with ourselves? How do we sync our mind and body with our spirit? Will yoga help us stay calm and more focused? Most of us look at yoga as
mere breathing, postures or meditation. Even after attending yoga sessions, do you still feel restless the rest of the day or before bed? What are we doing wrong or what is missing? We are missing the point. Yoga is not only about postures, meditation or breathing. It’s a whole lifestyle. There are eight limbs of Yoga, and you adopt only two or three. Why do we tend to do advance even before we are done with basics? Let’s turn to Yoga Philosophy here. The “Yamas” and “Niyamas” are very clear about yogic lifestyle. In modern lifestyle, our human nature is about always about wanting more but not being content with what we have. The sensibility of yoga is the balance between Santosha
(contentment) and tapas (self-discipline). There must be hard work, effort, and the reach for excellence, but simultaneously there must be a complete satisfaction with the situation as it is. If these two are not balanced, then we have a problem. If there is too much satisfaction, then there is torpor (lethargy), laziness, lack of effort, and consequently, the world does not grow or improve. Tapas (self-discipline) starts with respecting time. If we follow the rhythm of nature, life gets simple. If you rise before sunrise, you get a few extra hours on hand. Spending an hour on the mat and 23 hours off it. An hour of yoga practice is where you are working hard, and yet despite the effort; you feel contentment within your
body. Laziness must not be a disguise for Santosha. “I cannot pretend I am content when in fact I am lazy. I cannot pretend I am working hard when I am discontented with my body as it is. A real practice of asana is constant self-reflection, not jumping from one pose to another.” To benefit from yoga is to embrace the mindset and adopt the perspective of inner calm and contentment regardless of external events. Such spiritual well-being will exude positive, a life-affirming energy that will set your days into proper and peaceful motion. IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING TECHNIQUES WIDELY RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE TOP ATHLETES TO BEAT ON THE ITU CIRCUIT WITH AN OLYMPIC SILVER MEDAL AND 14 ITU WORLD CUPS UNDER HIS BELT, JAVIER GOMEZ GIVES AN EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING PERFORMANCE. GET MORE OUT OF YOUR NEXT RUN WITH THESE TIPS.
KEEP IN MIND: Performing the drill correctly is more important than many reps with incorrect form.
O
ne of the most important steps when it comes to enhancing you running techniques is to find the right coach. The guidance from an experienced individual will definitely help you to improve a lot, and minimise the risk of over training or injury. First off, start with the basics. You can review the standard and typical running drills from your coach such as high knees, skipping, butt-kicks, straight-leg bounds, carioca, etc. All these are vital to develop your skill. KEEP IN MIND: Performing the drill correctly is more important than many reps with incorrect form.

CORE STRENGTH It is essential for improving and maintaining running form and proper technique and injury prevention. Have a good gym program and try to get some time to work specifically this part of the body. Core strength is what sustains the whole body and is essential to keeping a good body position.
HIP STRENGTHENING AND MOBILITY This is a weak link in many runners. Most likely, your hip flexors are tight, and
your glutes and the smaller stabilising muscles are weak. I always start my run session doing some flexibility and mobility hip exercises.
KNOW YOUR CADENCE
The right number for optimal cadence is thought to be 180 steps per minute. This is the average cadence of most elite runners. But this isn’t a hard and fast number— it’s just a general guideline. When you’re running at an easy, comfortable pace, your cadence should be at least 170 steps per minute.
TRY THIS SESSION (TREADMILL OR TRACK)
Check out these run workouts. Test your level of fitness at different times of the season.
FIRST WORKOUT
When the first races of the season are approaching, introduce some race pace to the training program:
FARTLEK WITH ACTIVE RECOVERY
RUN 1500m (pace 2.55-3 min/km) with 1km ‘fast’ recovery (3:40 min/km pace).
SECOND WORKOUT To work on more accurate speed INTERVALS OF 12X200M IN 30-31 SECONDS, THEN INCREASE THE DISTANCE 50M EACH WEEK AT THE SAME PACE UNTIL REACHING 12X400 M AT 60-62.”

INCREASED MOTIVATION
Training with a friend can often bring out competitive side (Or the need to keep up with them). This increased motivation helps keeps you moving. After all, you can’t hold up your buddy.
CONSISTENCY
When it comes to working out, it’s easy to break plans with yourself but having someone ready and waiting, your workout programs becoming more of commitment. You’re much more likely to attend a session with a friend or personal trainer who has made plans with than to motivate yourself to get moving on a lone run after a long day.
VARIETY WORKOUT
Some days, training routine seems like a chore more than a heart-pumping workout. By working out with a friend or partnering up, you are more likely to diversify your exercise routine which is good for keeping muscles in shape.
TWO-PERSON EXERCISES
One of the top benefits of working with a partner is that you can enjoy a partnerbased workout, giving each individual the chance to motivate each other and keep on track.
SAFER WORKOUTS
Having someone to spot while doing squats or bench press or count reps check your form and help you with positional adjustments- your technique should improve and when working with someone already experienced also makes work out much safer. Also, when you go for a jog at night, having someone to buddy up with also makes it safer than running alone.
COST SAVING
Partnering up with a group with a personal trainer helps you reduce cost or taking advantage of referral program by a friend. Carpooling for driving to a class outside can also contribute to reducing the cost.
ACHIEVE GOALS TOGETHER
Some of the workouts using treadmills and the bench press aren’t the most exciting ways to pass the time but with a partner, get your heart racing on activities like running or even one on one basketball or racquetball. Practice timed incline sprints with your buddy, and don’t let each other quit!

AS MUCH AS YOU HATE THE HEAT, YOU MIGHT START TO LOVE IT
You might enjoy the fresh and crisp weather which will make you want to strap on your sneakers and workout, but did you know that pushing yourself in the summer heat could help improve your performance? When taken with right precautions, heat training can have extraordinary effects.

eing a CrossFit trainer and having worked with many different types of athletes, I have heard nearly all excuses in the book. From not being able to squat because of a dislocated finger to not wanting to run because of “funky smells outside”, I have almost heard them all. But coming from the pleasant weather of South Africa and moving to the Middle East, I have listened to one excuse after another quite often. Specifically, not wanting to train outside during summer. Don’t get me wrong; it’s hot. Having lived in the Middle East for nearly two years, I can say without any doubt that the heat is incomparable. As the sweat dripped down my third shirt for the day, it got me thinking, are there any benefits to training in this heat? Our bodies are amazing machines of responses and executions. We don’t have full control over our bodies, and sometimes, that’s a good thing. Our bodies adapt to the stress we put it under.

From expanding our pupils to seeing slightly better in the dark, to extracting blood and heat from our extremities in the cold to help keep your core temperature regulated. Our bodies adapt to make us better and stronger. The same goes for training in the heat. In my search for the good, the bad, and the ugly of training in the heat, I found myself mostly coming across positive articles. The negative part is over training in heat can cause dehydration and core overheating etc. As the saying goes, ‘All things in life are good in moderation.’ From all the benefits I found while training in the heat for reasonable periods of time, the one I found most interesting and relatable to my clients was that of: “training in heat increases plasma in the blood.” No, that doesn’t mean you get additional white and red blood cells. What this plasma refers to is the fact that, just like seeing in the dark and keeping warm in the cold, our bodies adapt to this stressful environment and retain
excess fluids in our blood we would generally not have held on to. Would you have thought of that if you trained outside? See, it’s a good thing we don’t control our entire bodies. In simple terms, the added fluids in our blood help us to pump more blood through our bodies. Specifically the circulatory system. What all these fancy words mean are, more blood flows through the body carrying more oxygen and nutrients to the muscle cells, which in return have better performance because of these extra ‘Gifts” from the blood. Training in the heat can be beneficial if you do it in moderation. So next time you plan on giving an excuse to your trainer, just remember his reason for doing is to improve your overall performance. CrossFit is what could be the absolute best way to help anyone reach their fitness goals, the natural way. CrossFit Blacksmith is a fitness centre owned by three Bahraini Nationals and is located in Hamala; providing core strength and conditioning programs using functional movements, and executed at high intensity. Affiliated under CrossFitBlackSmith, the program conveys a fitness that is purposely, broad, general and inclusive. CrossFit uses multi-joint movements which research has shown to have a positive effect on bone density as we age, along with keeping the central nervous system “sharp”. Another positive aspect of CrossFit is the fact that every workout has potential to be quite different than the last, which some find to be mentally challenging. For many, this tends to keep things fun, interesting, and addictive, which may increase one’s motivation giving them the desire to stick with it the regime.

ariq Abdulrahman, a dynamic young Bahraini-Scot has always loved sports. At university in the UK, he graduated with his Masters in Arabic and Business followed by a postgraduate Law degree. He returned to Bahrain and began his career as a legal consultant. However, his love of sports and in particular boxing haunted him, and he decided to give up his job and become an entrepreneur and open Bahrain’s first dedicated Boxing Club.
BOXING FOR A CAUSE
Tariq shares his passion with all young Bahrainis, both boys and girls from all backgrounds. He created his version of a ‘Social Business”, a ‘business with a cause’ rather than purely focusing on profit. Tariq based his business approach around his desire to tackle circumstances such as financial exclusion, social background and gender, which often stand in the way of opportunities. COACHED TO LEAD MAY AL HAJI AND MUBARAK MUBARAK BECAME TWO OF THE FIRST BAHRAINI ITU-CERTIFIED TRIATHLON COACHES. LOOKING FORWARD TO KEEPING TRIATHLON ON THE RIGHT TRACK IN THE KINGDOM, THEY’RE READY TO SHARE THEIR ACCOUNT AND ROAD TO A COACHING STRIDE.
That it is never too late to take up triathlon as with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

ay is new in coaching and has just attained the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Level 1 Certificate in Dubai. Mubarak started coaching in the 90’s as a swim coach specialised in people with disabilities. He holds a national swimming coaching certification and continued developing himself with the help of local and international coaches. Together, they have attended ITU level 1 in Dubai to improve and continuously learn and help the triathlon community in the kingdom.
THE ITU CERTIFICATION
In April 2017, The Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) hand in hand with the International Triathlon Union, held an ITU-organised coaching course in

Dubai. The special class was consisted of fifteen candidates from ten countries. Mubarak Mubarak and May Al Haji were very fortunate to be among the selected fifteen candidates to enter such course. The said program promises to open doors for the triathlon in the Kingdom of Bahrain significantly. The ASTC sponsored all the fifteen athletes aimed at letting them graduate as skilled and qualified local coaches in the region. A rigorous selection process was in place to enter the program. Once selected, the applicant undertakes preexams in addition to the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) certification. These requirements ensure that coaches, right from training, are fully aware of the dangers of doping, the substances that are considered as prohibited and the
doping test process. After passing the pre-exams and attained the WADA certification, they embark on a one- week intensive course which oriented the athletes to relevant theories and their connection to practical work. The final day of the course involved a practical test. They were also given an online examination to complete within a couple of weeks from course completion. May Al Haji said, “All in all, it was quite a challenging experience but one that I enjoyed very much. It helped me understand myself as an athlete first and foremost. It taught me to understand myself as a coach and seriously consider how to approach different types of athletes. Every athlete is different, and each grows in various ways and reacts to training differently. I learned that

coaching is much more than writing a training program. Safety and welfare of the athletes come first.” The course was conducted by the best of the best in their field - Vincent Beltran from Spain and Eugene Lee from Singapore. “We are truly thankful to ASTC especially Mr Woo Kyong Ki (Training Manager) for their dedicated efforts in developing the sport in the region through coach training” she added. With this kind of exposure and certification, the newly certified coach hopes to boost support for triathlon in Bahrain. By working hand in hand with the Bahrain Triathlon Association, it is their mission to create a base for young athletes who will represent the Kingdom locally and internationally and ultimately, the Olympics. “For starters, we shall build support for various age groups by providing a robust program to help them cross their first finish line or nail a personal best”. Mubarak Mubarak is set to engage in an IRONMAN 70.3 swim training program. The program aims to prepare athletes for the Bahrain IRONMAN 70.3.
TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
May emphasise her coaching on the fact that it is never too late to take up triathlon as with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. According to her, success in sports and triathlon is relative to the athlete, be it finishing a race, beating a personal best or placing in one’s age group or even competing as an elite. She further explained, “I believe that it is my responsibility as a coach to help athlete meet their full potential as it is the athlete’s responsibility to put in the required work to achieve his or her goal.” As for Mubarak, his coaching strategy is based on developing the athletes. His focus is with the national team and age groupers. He begins by developing the emotional, psychological and then the physical aspects of training for athletes.
RACING STRATEGY
When asked about their racing strategy, May said, “Everyone should have a racing strategy, and it is very personal based on the goals of each person. My main is strategy is to race to get the best out of you. The only way you can teach an athlete is leading by example. You have to be what you preach.” Mubarak shares his strategy, “I start from the base moving towards the main block, and to taper before the race week, and after the raceweek, I repeat the cycle.”
enhancer. Once you have the above covered, then I tailor the plan based on the race schedule and the goal of the athlete.”
BEING AN ITU COACH AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR BAHRAIN
The two ITU certified coaches expressed their gratitude to have participated in this momentous event. “It is an honour to be among the first accredited in this region. There is a lack of local female coaches in Bahrain and GCC in general, thus, being accredited means that more women will be able to take part in the sport. It is a door opener as more women taking part in triathlon means more active kids and consequently, active kids will decrease obesity and sickness. In addition to that, more children create a pool of athletes who might be in the Olympics one day representing Bahrain in triathlon. Our training was just the beginning of our service. Mubarak and I are committed to the upgrowth of triathlon as a promising sports and fitness event in Bahrain.”
PUTTING TOGETHER A TRAINING PLAN
According to May, “There are basic rules that one must follow when writing up a plan and it is all based on the athletic background of the athlete in addition to the social background and availability. The training plan must revolve around the athlete’s lifestyle and not the other way around. After all, if you race as an age grouper, you have to remember that sport should be a life
“My race strategy is to start from the base moving towards the main block, and to taper before the race week, and after the race week, I repeat the cycle.”

THEY CALL ME BU SALMAN Bu Salman, that’s what most people call me. It is because I have a son named Salman. In October, he’ll be turning 13 and according to my wishes 13 years ago, he should only be 5 years away from becoming the world’s best triathlete. Is he on track? The short answer is absolutely NOT!
T
he day our wives break the news to us that we are expecting a newborn, especially if it was the first, we, men, begin strategically planning their whole lives. We don’t put that much thought and planning into our own lives. No, that’s already gone and beyond retrospective planning. As if given a chance for a do over, we try hard to make up for everything through that little being that will see life months later. Just like you all, I am guilty as well. We have all dressed up our weeks-old kids with the shirt of the sport or team we hope they will be playing or supporting later on when they grow up. We literally start brainwashing them before they are even born. Is this wrong? Not very much, but here is what I have learned throughout those years. The most difficult thing I have faced is to balance

school and sports. I wanted my son to learn swimming, cycling, and running. However, because of the environment we live in, he was easily attracted to football or soccer, as some call it. Sure, I love football, but it is not unique. In order to become recognized, he would have to compete against thousands, especially those who have lost the hope of becoming schooled long before they actually commit to it. What are the chances of success in the professional arena, I would say slim to none! Perhaps he is better off focusing on school while he has the opportunity. What about all my dreams? Well, reality has hit me hard. There are two messages that I want to deliver to you all in
my article this month. First, reality, and second, reality. They’re surprisingly not the same. The reality we live in makes it extremely difficult for a person to make a career out of being a professional sportsman. A person can create a business in sports, but becoming a professional athlete is really pushing the limits these days. Notice that I didn’t say impossible, and sure we are indeed working towards that. However, if you do the math, you will discover that kids have a much higher chances of success if they focus solely on education and I don’t think a responsible parent would want to take the risk at this stage. We still don’t have our own NBA, NFL, or the Premier
“The thing is, you don’t tell other people your dreams, .”
DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA

League-like teams. The second reality is actually a more important reality. It is really an advice if you think about it. We can encourage our kids to take the career or the sport we want them to, but we should not force it on them. We must give them the space to choose and more importantly, respect their choice. Any kid could certainly use his parents as number one supporters. I failed to make Salman, my son, choose triathlon over football, but where I succeeded was in becoming his supporter into football. I found him a summer football academy and he’s now enjoying training. He’s actually kicking the ball on the field instead of breaking my garden lights. So all’s well that ends well, I suppose. There is however that one thing I will never compromise. If my kids want to live in my home, they had better support Chelsea. Thankfully, they do!

I
t isn’t easy taking a break from the sport that has given you so much or says goodbye to the faces you regularly see whether at the pool, road or track. But hard times always prove character. I’ve decided to officially take a year off the sport of Triathlon to focus on what’s more important than staring at a black line in the pool all morning or discovering endless trails on the road. Many athletes nowadays neglect the importance of education. You can be an Olympic gold medalist, world champion, neighbourhood hero or any winner you would like to be; if you don’t have something to fall back on like a college degree, you won’t go as far. Athletes are highly prone to injuries. Once you’re injured, you fall into the lost dark road of recovery. Whether it’s a severe injury or niggles, your opponent is still out there getting fitter and stronger than you. For the average athlete, there is no way that their game experience can help them handle their money. One thing that can change this is taking the time to go to university. Learning about the world and
the way it works in and out of the classroom is an excellent way to figure out the way you want to live your life. Athletes who truly invest in these educational opportunities sometimes find out that the dreams that they had about ‘good life’are not based on reality. But too many of them skip education; they think of themselves as rock stars, they try to imitate a lifestyle that has left so many people in dire straits. I am taking a different road right now. I know too well that sports make a short career. You train as hard as you can, and no matter how good you get, there will always be someone better than you on the rise. You never stay the best for long. I still am obsessed with the sport, and I will DEFINITELY come back. There are lots of things that I have yet to accomplish. But for now, I’ve got other priorities. I would like to thank every single person who has supported me and made this rollercoaster ride easier. Your Highness Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, I cannot thank you enough for all that you’ve done.

CYCLING
BAHRAIN MERIDA, AS PART OF THEIR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, HAS SUPPORTED MANY CAMPAIGNS SUCH AS CYCLE SAFE AND NOW THINK PINK. WHY DID BAHRAIN MERIDA CHOOSE TO SUPPORT THOSE AWARENESS PROGRAMS?
When we formed this team, apart from winning races and promoting Bahrain, we also wanted to be Bahrain’s team. A team that has local fans and with that in mind, we want to thank the people of Bahrain and support organisations in the country that need help. Through this campaign, we are helping people in need and opening a window of opportunity for all Bahrainis to help as well. Also, personal health and fitness are in our core vision, so with this ride, we are inviting all people in Bahrain to join us for the ride. Many people already ride a bike for fun or training, but we would like to have non-cyclists that will come to support charity and to find out how riding a bike can be a fun and healthy way to spend a Saturday morning. It is also an opportunity for all newcomers to meet new people and future cycling buddies.
TELL US ABOUT THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THINK PINK, BAHRAIN MERIDA AND CYCLE SAFE BAHRAIN TO RAISE AWARENESS ON BREAST CANCER. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE AT THE END OF THE PROJECT?
Team Bahrain Merida will each year partner with a different charity and organise an event to support it. For our first year, we selected Think Pink because we noticed them, we saw that they are
very active and we thought it would be a great partnership for a man’s cycling team to support women’s organisation. After an initial meeting with Julie Sparkle it was clear that they are the perfect organisation to partner with for our first event. After choosing Think Pink, we partnered up with Cycle Safe Bahrain as this ride will also teach people how to ride safely on the roads, as well as educate car drivers the need to share the road with cyclists. Cycle Safe Bahrain is a great initiative, and we’ll always partner up with them for any ride that we are organising.

CYCLING
TO THE KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN? HOW WILL THIS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
I think there will be many different impacts. First and foremost we wanted to help raise fund for Think Pink that they could use in taking care of women affected by breast cancer. Also, we want to take part in raising awareness and making sure that women go to regular check ups. Think Pink would be able to tell you more about the importance of breast cancer early detection. We want to encourage people in Bahrain to be more active. We could organise a gala dinner for Think Pink and raise funds that way, but through cycling we are telling people, come ride one morning with us and see the difference that makes with you. Riding a bike decreases stress level, as well as body fat level, prevents diseases and improves your cardiovascular fitness, your strength, flexibility, mobility, posture and coordination. Lastly, we want people to have fun, to come alone, with friends or family, and mingle with other riders. Cyclists are friendly people, and we’ll make sure you are enjoying your ride, or better said, your morning, starting with coffee before the ride, and breakfast after the ride.

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS CAMPAIGN TO THE TEAM BAHRAIN MERIDA?
As mentioned before, we are Bahrain’s team, and we want to feel that. In January we had all our riders in Bahrain and about 400 people were riding with our riders one Saturday morning. All feedback was great, so with those rides we meet our fans, our fans meet us and realise riders are human no matter if they are called Vincenzo Nibali. We love

time we’ll have few of our professional riders ride with us at #pedal4pink, although the racing season will still be going on at the time of our ride.

FOOTBALL
CHALLENGE FROM HIGH PLACES
Football is hardly the first sport you would hear a young lady pin for. But it is just the kind of fun that calls to the adventurous Deena. Playing football since she was a little girl, she embraces every ache and pain borne of playing the field. As if waging her way into a predominantly male sport was not challenging enough, an even higher call
LEVELLING THE FIELD ONE FEAT AT A TIME Deena Abdulrahman kicks her way into breaking stereotypes for women in football. In June, Deena was part of two teams of women players who scaled the height of Mount Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest peak in the daring adventure dubbed Equal Playing Field: The Challenge. Reaching the summit was just halfway through the challenge if you can imagine that. The teams went on to descend 5,785 metres to play football from the highest ground ever.

came in the form of a match to be played within the crater just below the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek alone is seven days of potential altitude sickness and a steady bout of chilling cold. But the traverse was not short on rewards.Deena recalls, “The Trek was amazing, the main concern was altitude sickness, so we strolled. In Tanzania, they say “Pole, Pole” which means ‘slowly, slowly,’ but each day was different. We would experience the weather becoming
increasingly colder. We encountered steep parts. At one point, we had to scramble across the mountain wall which was exhilarating. We were above the clouds, and the stars were bright and clear. At the top, there was an amazing glacier, and we walked back down through the rainforest. The changing views and scenes made it even more exciting. Every day we would get to camp with the sight of the summit getting closer.”
Equal Playing Field is an advocacy organisation committed to challenging the norms of restriction and limitation for women in football and promote equality in sports. They seek to provide representation and support for women’s sports worldwide. This year they partnered with Discover Football to launch a bold attempt a Guinness World Record for Highest Elevation Football Game in History. GETTING THERE
The journey to a mountain top begins with a multitude of steps. Playing 90 minutes of football at a previously unchartered playing field means rigorous mental and physical preparation as well as a special proteinrich diet. Climbing coupled by lifting gears required training with weights. Getting there meant so much more than
the passion for playing. It included logistics, funds, and support from various streams. Deena thankfully shares, “I was delighted that with my Go Fund Me page supported by family and friends, the Nasser Bin Hamad Foundation and the Bahrain National Ladies Team as well as a couple of events at Tekkers Academy, I was able to cover the costs of the trip.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The majestic mountain, which rises 20,000-feet above sea level across the African plane, was first conquered 1889. Approximately 25,000 people attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro annually. Nearly two-thirds are successful. Altitude-related problems are the most common reason climbers turn back. The trails of Kilimanjaro is a popular venue for groundbreaking, causeadvancing climbs

FOOTBALL
FIELD OF DREAMS
The height at which the football match was played aptly portrayed the high significance of the event of a lifetime. Once the temporary pitch markings and goals were set, it was all about football and more. Due to the thinning of air, playing at such altitude had never been attempted. The players needed to get used to the playing conditions before the match. Deena describes their not-sotypical routine, “Every day we were woken up around 6 am with a hot drink delivered to our tent. We would then pack up and get ready with our day bags and go to breakfast. Most days, we hiked around 4-5 hours. Every day was different in terms of terrain and weather. We usually would get to the next camp for lunch. In the afternoon we would either do an acclimatisation walk which involved going to a higher point to get used to the altitude or have a friendly match between our teams. Dinner would be followed by a group meeting about the next day’s itinerary and equipment needed. We were split into five groups. I was the leader of Team Ngiri (Warthog). We would usually go to bed at 9 pm with a hot water bottle which was a definite bonus in the cold temps.”
A WORLD OF WOMEN

various parts of the globe. For Deena, it was a great opportunity to catch up with fellow athletes. She fondly recalls, “I was delighted to meet up with Rachel Unitt again after 16 years! We played together professionally for Fulham FC in 2001 and also for England U18s. We had a great time catching up. Dawn Scott was also on the trip as one of the coaches. She is currently the USA Ladies National Team fitness coach, but she was my fitness coach during my time in the England U18s. I also knew a few girls from

THE EQUALIZER
There was no such thing as a home court or home crowd advantage for any of the teams. True to its tag “equal playing field” the near-summit playing ground proved
increasing struggle to inhale quickly to fill the air with lungs. There was no easy way around it for anyone. Deena recounts, “On the day of the match, we woke up at 2 am and did a 5 hr Trek to Stella Point. It was freezing and tough as the air got thinner. We then made our way into the crater where the match would take place. Our support
team left earlier to set up the pitch with porters taking the goals up. A Fifa official ensured all the measurements were correct and flour was used to make the lines so as not to harm the environment. Another team cleared rocks. At 10:15 am we kicked off. The pitch was mainly sand which made it difficult to connect with the ball and recovery time was much slower due to the altitude.” Although both teams had clear chances to score it ended 0-0. Straight after the match, the players did not rest on their laurels, so to speak and instead climbed for another hour to reach the summit yet again. Deena remarks, “By this point, we were all pretty tired but were determined to get to the top. We arrived back at camp around 6 pm for well-earned food and rest. It feels amazing to have achieved the feat. I was delighted to play a full 90 minutes, and to be a part of this unique initiative to promote females in a sport which I am extremely
passionate about. The record still needs to be verified before we can really celebrate, but it is starting to sink in now, just exactly what we achieved up there. To be a part of this history is something I can always treasure.” Deena realises the climb and the match, however monumental, are just parts of a bigger purpose of shedding light on the issues faced by women in sports and rally support for women football. Deena is committed, “We work hard to proactively provide opportunities. In the coming year, we have clinics being conducted around the world for girls to play football. I am aiming to attend a couple over the summer as well as organise one in Bahrain which will complement our health programme at Tekkers Academy for female football.” The once in a lifetime experience is too good not to share with girls who have the same daring resolve to push known boundaries and bring the glory of women in sports to the highest level possible.

TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF iDRIVE?
iDrive actually started in February 2017. I went to Al Zayani Motors to take their Mitsubishi (Outlander) to testdrive. They gave me trust right from the beginning, and it helped me a lot. I had the car for two days to test drive it and to give my actual feedback on various aspects of driving the car. They were interested in a driver’s feedback and not a typical repetition of what is written on the tag or catalogue details. Within those two days, I took footage and did all the montage and edits needed. It was a new experience for me standing in front of a camera and saying my honest review. After a while, I shared the video with my family and friends via YouTube, they gave me full support and encouragement and advised me to continue. It was not all rosy though. On the same day, Al

On March 2017, I opened a CR for advertising and media production category which is my business now. My primary business objective was to be an official test driver to car showrooms and dealers.
WHAT IS YOUR GOAL?
My goal is to be one of the best car reviewers not only in Bahrain or GCC but the entire Arab Region, By creating content that matters to the viewers, particularly those who have a keen interest in cars available in this part of the world, I can tap into a larger and steady following. I’m planning to create new shows that would involve local communities.

I get a mix of positive, encouraging reviews as well as negative ones. You can’t please everyone. What is important to me is doing my best in what I love to do and enjoying the support of my friends and family. Also, local car enthusiasts are eager to see their passion in Bahrain’s name.

MEET CULINAIRE & BEYOND
Every month, we are in search of healthy and delicious food to help you keep your fitness goals. Believe it or not, you can still eat out
WHAT IS THE VISION BEHIND CULINAIRE & BEYOND? Culinaire Beyond envisions an exponential evolution of the Restaurant and Hospitality sectors in Bahrain. The data from several researches validates the hypothesis, and we wish to help develop, support and catalyse the predicted growth for both the sectors in Bahrain. Culinaire & Beyond has three distinct core business divisions through which it will influence business in two specific sectors to be aware of their potential and to have the right guidance to be able to capitalise on that potential.
WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE TRENDS YOU WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY? Culinaire & Beyond is the Authorized Licensee of The Next Idea (International) LLC, a global hospitality and restaurant consulting group based and registered in the USA. Robert Ancill CEO of The Next Idea recently pointed out during the BRHF that was held in Maythree trends, which are as follows:
Plant based everything Healthy food Farm to Table Plant based menus have fueled growth in new and exciting vegan products. Various segments of society adopt this lifestyle choice, some worried about their cholesterol and fat levels, while others simply substitute it for their conventional meat intake. A protein-based diet is also an excellent way to control the daily calorie intake. Healthy food is a trend we’re all
steadily adopting, and it includes much more than just the amount of food one consumes. It encourages you to reflect on conventional food choices and develop a sound understanding of what you eat on a daily basis. Meals, even snacks can be substituted for healthier options such as nuts, seeds and high fibre grains. This brings us to the third most significant trend, farms to table, which is a fascinating social movement promoting locally grown food as restaurants. It encourages the community to promote the local ecosystem and ensures a fresh supply of healthy food varieties that are high in nutritional value.
THERE AREN’T MANY VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN BAHRAIN, DO YOU SEE THAT AS A GAP THAT NEEDS TO BE FILLED? As predicted by The Next Idea, plant based everything is a global trend. Hence, I’m sure we will see its effects trickle down into the Bahraini market too shortly. We have some vegan restaurant in Bahrain but we understand that the current restaurants reflect the food preferences of people. A shift in the number of vegan restaurants will only take place if there is a sizeable evolution of the food choices of the people.
HOW DOES CULINAIRE & BEYOND AIM TO GIVE F&B INNOVATIVE IDEAS TO EXCEL? Culinaire & Beyond is on a mission
to catalyse the growth of the F&B industry in totality. Our strategy is to impact the entire ecosystem by contributing its part in the consultancy, brand facilitation and event curation segments. Culinaire & Beyond believes that the right combination of passionate Entrepreneurs, SME’s and larger corporations, interested government bodies and investor interest can greatly impact the exponential growth of the F&B sector.
HOW IS CULINAIRE & BEYOND INTENDING TO ADD TO THE F&B AND HOSPITALITY GROWTH OF BAHRAIN? The company represents The Next Idea in Bahrain, Saudi and the surrounding region hence proving to be a vital link for providing strategic solutions for businesses in the F&B area. There’s an incredibly obvious gap in key areas of the F&B sector such as brand creation, concept development, operation optimisation, scaling up businesses, menu design, training and sourcing relevant staff and all areas of business diagnostics which we can define and link to The Next Idea who are expert consultants in this sector.

A DENTAL DREAM Aesthetica was established in 2016, Although relatively young, it has long been the vision of its founder Dr. Reem Alshaiba to one day have her own dental practice where she can apply her expertise in dental care to serve patients. She has extensive experience gained both from her dental practice and her Masteral Studies abroad. She offers, “I am also a product of training courses, workshops, and seminars. Dr. Reem was keen on giving patients a satisfying dental experience from the minute they walk in. For the decoration and architecture of her centre, she took inspiration from French classical interior design, which instantly gives the person stepping in the feeling of relaxation and comfort.
DENTISTRY TRANSFORMED BY DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY Dr. Reem was determined to introduce new concepts in the field of dentistry
that will scale up the standards of dental care in Bahrain. She wanted to depart from conventional methods and embrace innovation to the fullest. Dr. Reem recalls, “My goal was to establish a fully digital dental centre.” Digital dentistry is part of modern dentistry. It is a concept that is highly advanced, with precise methods enabling the doctor to communicate with the patient at every step – from planning an entire treatment that can be completed from A to Z digitally even before touching the patient’s teeth. This means that patients see the intended outcome of their treatments ahead of the actual procedure itself. Dr. Reem believes that this technique will help minimise medical errors in

After studying and treating hundreds of cases, and specialising in the Aesthetic and Restorative Field, Dr. Reem further discovered a new passion, which is photography. She says, “It plays a significant role in digital treatment planning. Such approaches are necessary to adopt locally to put The Kingdom Of Bahrain on the map, and make it an attractive destination for dental treatment.”
INNOVATIVE SERVICES Aesthetica Dental Centre uses the best and latest technologies, and stateof-the-art equipment to deliver the best possible results. Dr. Reem enumerates, “Our cosmetic treatments such as the Hollywood smiles, and veneers are fully digitized. We work closely with the patients and help them achieve the

It is worthy to note that the first conference for SKYN in the Middle East was held in Aesthetica Dental Centre. The event saw a large number of dental practitioners and clinicians from around the world attending to learn this concept.”

Creating a home-away-fromhome feel café, where people could have a cup of coffee while reading a book, or grab a sandwich for a quick bite and study for an exam is one of the primary goals of the restaurant’s design. It has a well-lit interior, with a wall of book selection you can read while sitting. SYMBOL FOR INNOVATION Leaves have become a symbol of innovation and diversification. The foresight of Faequa Bastaki; Leaves is the Arabian Gulf’s premier chocolatier and event planner. It was founded upon recognition of a niche in the market in 2005 and has seen rapid growth within the GCC in subsequent years. Most recently, Leaves has added Dubai to its areas of operation.
L
eaves have perfected the blend that goes into developing chocolates that include hints of flavours reminiscent of Khaleeji confectionery preferences. The manufacturing process takes place locally at their very own chocolate facility, and 90% of the sourcing and manufacturing of their GCC franchises depends on the Kingdom of Bahrain for the same. With a flagship store in Riffa and a store in Budaiya, Leaves is to open an outlet at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Bahrain as the need for their presence has been identified over time. Leaves also provide baby delivery celebrations, perfected with a decorative mural combining the subtle touches of chocolates themed to welcome the young member of the family. Hospitality is a huge part of our culture. Their core business ideology is inspired by this very culture where they believe in celebrating with the community and creating memories by offering a sense

of warmth and cordiality to the society.Competitors come and go. They believe that innovation is a key value that they embrace and that alone keeps them passionate about their work and always keeps them on the edge of their seats. Further understanding the evolving market that is health conscious but would also like to indulge, Bader Nooruddin, Director of Leaves, and his team got together to pave a way for inclusion that accommodated these identifiable necessities. Leaves is a proud producer of specific chocolate varieties that cater to the lactose intolerant community. Rich, pure, honed, dark chocolate product lines have been introduced. This strategy would bypass the dairy constraint without compromising the pure and flavorful expectation. Sugar-free chocolates ensure that the diabetic community in the GCC isn’t left behind. These sugar-free chocolates are produced plain, or with an assortment of nuts such as hazelnut,
almonds, or pistachios. Expanding on this initiative, Leaves has also created nutritious variants and can supply nutritional facts upon request to slip into your fitness routine. Leaves is capable of customising orders based on a client’s nutritional requirements, dietary preferences, allergies or health constraints. Based on the brief received, Leaves could create a customised, personalised, blend of chocolates. There are plans to accommodate vegan preferences in their product line which has caused a stir of excitement amongst the fast growing vegan community in the region. Constantly evolving with the changing trends and tough economic times, Bader Nooruddin steers his team towards a vision that is firmly believed in by all members and is an encouraging entrepreneurial effort to create sustainable business models relevant to the GCC, homegrown in our very own Kingdom of Bahrain.

EXPERT ADVICE
NO, NOT TODAY HYPOTHYROIDISM
DR. WIAM
American Board in Diabetes & Endocrinology
Are you fatigued or can’t lose weight? Check your Thyroid, the under-diagnosed endocrine disorder.
HYPOTHYROIDISM
T
hyroid diseases are one of the most common endocrine disorders that are quickly diagnosed and treated. However, the disease is usually underdiagnosed and highly undertreated, affecting a percentage of the population. Thyroid disorders are broadly divided into thyroid function disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism), and thyroid gland size disorders (goitres and nodules) which could be present both in a single patient. The disorders are more prevalent with age, people with a family history of thyroid disease and autoimmune disorders, and is much more common in females. Thyroid disorders occur in a significant proportion of the general population, and it is increasingly being diagnosed. However, more than half of the cases are still undiagnosed. The Colorado study, one of the largest study to date, revealed that around 10 percent of the population suffers from hypothyroidism and three percent hyperthyroidism. Thyroid nodules are very common and were found in multiple studies. It will reach 50 percent of the population without a history of clinically detectable thyroid disease. The natural history of thyroid diseases usually evolves, but with early diagnosis and appropriate management by a specialised Endocrinologist, most disorders are treatable.
“It’s an easy blood test and simple neck exam to assure people of their Thyroid status with a very efficient and affordable treatment available. GET TESTED NOW!”
Low thyroid hormones status, is the most common disease. The symptoms are mostly related to the generalised slowing of metabolic processes.
SYMPTOMS: FATIGUE SLOW MOVEMENT AND SLOW SPEECH COLD INTOLERANCE CONSTIPATION WEIGHT GAIN DELAYED RELAXATION OF DEEP TENDON REFLEXES SLOW HEART COARSE HAIR AND SKIN PUFFY FACES ENLARGEMENT OF THE TONGUE HOARSENESS.
These changes are often more easily recognised in young patients, and they may be attributed to ageing in older patients. This hypometabolism that is associated with hypothyroidism results in a decrease in cardiac output that is mediated by reductions in heart rate and contractility that could worsen cardiac failure. Hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperhomocysteinemia could complicate hypothyroidism thus leading to atherosclerosis with heart disease. BAHR AINI PRIDE SPORTS FA SHION The journey of Valour Apparel started in mid-2015, with two young Bahraini’s with a passion for design creating a brand that has become a Bahraini pride. To the founders, it was essential that the values of the brand are maintained, locally and internationally. Initially, the brand was developed to provide athletes with quality and fashionable sportswear at reasonable prices for all. Quality and designs that are at the level of leading sportswear brands available at half the price! And certainly, the brand has proved that price does not determine quality in sportswear. All designs are developed by the brand internally, seeking in-house expertise and international designers and artists alike. Something of which adds another dimension to the brand. The Team Sports Division at Valour was successful in partnering up with one of Bahrain’s top Football Clubs, the Riffa SC, and after a successful first-year partnership, Valour has secured Riffa SC for a three-year contract for Season 2017/18 to Season 2019/20. The brand slogan relates to every individual, regardless of their activities, whether it is sports, professional and personal life. Valour hails those who set the bar high in the pursuit of their dreams. Sacrifice, Endurance, Dedication and Commitment all form part of the game.
