BAHRAIN AND SPORTS

Influencing the GCC and the World

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities.

In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome

show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

ofan effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and @powerupmag

FIGHT TO

SURVIVE BY PHIL CLOUGH

UFC fans have a lot to look forward to this summer!

W

e are not even half way through the year and yet in the last six months we have witnessed some of the most eagerly awaited fights in decades. In that time we have seen some of the biggest names in the UFC lose their titles in spectacular fashion, and there are still queues of hopefuls vying to get into the Octagon for a title shot. For those that have not managed to keep up with the fighting world; we will try to summarize what has happened, who is now holding which title and what rumors are currently doing the rounds when it comes to rematches. Let’s try and put the last six months of fights in chronological order. To do that we absolutely have to mention the downfall of the biggest name in the female fight world: Ronda Rousey. Rousey was not only the world’s pre-eminent female fighter, but she had also

14 | PowerUp | June 2016

dipped her toes into the murky waters of Hollywood. Her name was quite literally written in lights, having starred in films alongside some of the most well-known names in the film industry: Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson to name two. Not being one to shy away from big fights she was put on the score card against the little known ex-boxer, Holly Holm. It should have proved a good test of Rousey, but one that she was expected to win. However, everyone (myself included) was left slack jawed and aghast when at UFC 193 on 14 November 2015, Holly Holm knocked out the reigning champion with an almost perfect display of her fighting skills. Holm was known to be a big hitter from her boxing days, but this, combined with a devestating roundhouse kick proved too much for Rousey and the referee stopped the fight in the second round. Truth be told, Rousey was no match for the ‘on form’ Holm and it was

likely that the referee would have had to stop the fight had it continued any further. However, Holm’s time at the top proved to be shortlived. She was matched against the seasoned bantamweight fighter Meisha Tate. Tate has been a regular feature in the UFC which has seen her fight 23 times, gaining an impressive record of 18 wins: 3 by knockout, 7 by submission and 8 by decision. Her 5 losses meant that she never gained huge popularity or exposure to the scale of Rousey but she has certainly made her mark now as the new reigning champion. That said, there are a queue of fighters looking for a title fight, and if rumors are to be believed, both Rousey and Holm are in that queue. The next upset, and arguably one that surpassed even that of Rousey vs. Holm was when the highest purse earning MMA fighter of all time, one Conor McGregor lost to MMA big hitter Nate Diaz. Now, just so we are all

clear, this wasn’t a title fight, McGregor was out to prove that he could fight anyone in the UFC regardless of weight. He has a proven track record at featherweight and holds the current UFC title. In fact we have covered the young Dubliner in this magazine before and he certainly has a habit of gaining headlines both in and out of the Octagon. ‘The Notorious’ (as he is known in the MMA world), was scheduled to switch up one weight category to lightweight in an attempt to hold two weight classification titles at the same time (having won the featherweight title by knocking out Jose Aldo in an impressive 13 seconds). Unfortunately, his opponent, the reigning lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot in training and the bout was cancelled. Not one to disapoint his fans, he accepted a fight at welterweight against Diaz. Many said that his attempt to go up two weights from

his normal fighting weight would be a step too far, and unfortunately they were proven correct. He came out in the first round and gave an impressive display of his punching power, rocking Diaz a number of times. It looked like it would be a walkover, but in the second round, he came out a different fighter looking tired and inconsistent. Diaz took full advantage and the fight turned. Following a number of good combinations which further sapped his strength, McGregor attempted to take the fight to the ground. Diaz seemed to be waiting for the move and managed to turn him and in a shocking end to the fight forced McGregor to tap out after securing a rearnaked choke hold. It probably hurt McGregor to lose the fight, however that hurt was most likely eased with the $1,000,000 fight

purse he walked away with. McGregor has stated that he will now drop back down to his regular fighting weight of featherweight to defend his title, but also guaranteed that he would step back up for a rematch with Diaz. However, in recent days McGregor sent the media into a flat spin by announcing his retirement! We were at first skeptical, however, when his trainer later said on Twitter ‘it was good whilst it lasted’ we were left in shock and wondering what could possibly have made him come to end such a promising career in the UFC? After leaving us to stew for what seemed like an eternity, McGregor came back onto social media to state categorically that he had not retired and was still available for UFC 200. This has led to mass confusion as to what is going on between McGregor

and Dana White (owner of the UFC brand). McGregor has hinted to the fact that he is just ‘sick and tired of being used as a publicity monkey’ and just wants to get back to training and fighting. Whatever is the cause, we just hope the problem is solved sooner rather than later so we fight fans can get back to enjoying what we love. UFC 200 is looking likely to be one of the most exciting contests to date. If initial reports are correct it will have a monumental fight card with 2 title bouts and any number of top contenders out to prove they should have a title shot. We hope that we get the chance to see McGregor take on Diaz in the rematch, but I am less hopeful given the inhouse battle of wills between McGregor and White. We are also looking forward to Jose Aldo taking on Frankie Edgar, (both of

which hope to fight

McGregor for the featherweight title) a fight that would be well worth tuning in for. It is shaping up to be the biggest year in MMA history, and if you are a fight fan and you have not yet tuned in to watch UFC you don’t know what you are missing. UFC 200 is scheduled for 9 July 2016 on Pay per View, it will be well worth the investment. If you are looking for a summer holiday location, I would seriously advise you to think about making the journey to Las Vegas, it’s guaranteed to be an electrifying night!

The Roland-Garros stadium opened in 1928 (although the annual championship for French men’s singles dates back to 1891). The stadium was named after the French aviator Roland Garros (18821918). Mr. Garros was the first French pilot to cross the Mediterranean sea on September 23, 1913. But the Roland-Garros stadium is not all about tennis — outside the two week period of the French Open, you can dine at “Le Roland Garros” — a restaurant in a Normandy style cottage right at the heart of this prestigious tennis venue. “Le Roland-Garros” also offers a beautiful terrace in a peaceful and sunny garden setting — perfect for a summer lunch! It is adjacent to the beautiful greenhouses in the Jardin d’Auteuil (Serres d”Auteuil) — sadly likely to be reduced in

size due to the controversial Roland-Garros expansion project. The French Open or Roland-Garros Tournament, (Tournoi De Roland Garros) is the second Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year after the Australian Open which is then followed by Wimbledon and the US Open. Whether or not you are a fan of tennis, we thought you may enjoy views of the vibrant red clay tennis courts of the Roland Garros Stadium. It is the only Grand Slam tournament that is played on clay courts, a slow playing surface with typically longer rallies. The event is widely regarded as the most physically demanding tournament in the world, won in 2015 by Serena Williams of the United States and Swiss tennis player, Stan Wawrinka. In 1925 the tournament accepted entries internationally for amateur players and in 1968 became the first Grand Slam to become an Open tournament by allowing entries from both amateurs and professionals. Equal prize money for both the men and women were introduced in 2007.

FASHION

Fashion in Tennis according to Bob Smith has four major fashion shows a year. They’re in typical cities — London, New York, Melbourne — but on atypical stages. His latest creation debuted in Paris last week, not on a runway, but on the courts at Roland Garros. “What I try to do is treat the Slams almost kind of like a runway,” said Smith, tennis apparel design director for New Balance. The industry is dominated primarily by major brands such as Nike and Adidas. But traditional lifestyle brands Uniqlo and H&M have also jumped into the ring. New Balance, primarily a shoe company, introduced its tennis clothing line in 2013. Unlike most sports, players don’t wear uniforms and are “pretty much wearing as close as you can get to street wear,” Smith said. Its global appeal is obvious. Knowing the court surface is important so the outfit doesn’t clash or blend in with the background, Smith said, like the red clay of Roland Garros or the blue of

Australian Open’s hard courts. And understanding the geographic location is vital too, for instance, choosing dark colours doesn’t “make a lot of sense” in scorching-hot Melbourne in January. Nike spokesperson Claire Rankine said in an email that the company’s outfits were “conceived to utilize striking colour choices and disruptive patterns inspired by the phenomenally vibrant street art of the city of Melbourne.”

PLAYING ON CLAY COURTS Due to the slow playing nature of clay courts the characteristics of the game played is very different to the other tournaments. There are four main keys to mastering clay court tennis.

1

POWERFUL GROUNDSTROKES Points are based around powerful groundstrokes with heavy topspin and the forehand being the dominating shot

@powerupmag

2

PATIENCE Although players are still looking to dominate the opponent from the baseline at the back of the court, they are typically more patient and look to move the opponent around the court before being able to go for a winning shot.

3

MENTAL TOUGHNESS Be prepared to maintain concentration for longer and keep a high level of intensity.

4

PHYSICAL FITNESS Clay courts require the player to have good endurance, due to long rallies, excellent footwork as clay requires sliding and getting into position quickly and balance to change direction many times during a point. June 2016 | PowerUp | 17

WORLD CUP 2006 BY GREGORY LAGUESSE

The World Cup is always the most exciting event in football. This article tackles the same event 10 years ago, for a different perspective.

JULY 9, 2006, 9 P.M. BERLIN OLYMPIC STADIUM This is the most anticipated sports event on the planet. 28 cameras are about to beam the eighteenth World Cup final to billions of viewers, with France facing its heated rival, Italy. Their last two encounters already proved decisive, with France victimizing Italy during the 1998 quarter finals, and again 2-1 on Golden Goal at the Euro 2000 final. This time, Italian coach Marcelo Lippi announced the game as “a most lavishly prepared table, where we will all seat, and see who is most hungry…” Indeed, we are about to witness a most ferocious battle!

CROSSING OF FATES Celebrated as the maestro who orchestrated France’s most glorious team, Zinédine Zidane has won everything: the World Cup on home soil in 1998, the Euro in 2000, and @powerupmag

the Champions’ League with professional club Real Madrid in 2002, before retiring from national duty in 2004. Yet, a year later, he came back on his decision to retire and has now offered himself a grand sign-off to his international career with another World Cup final. While the French football genius has illuminated the tournament with his class and spectacular technique, Marco Materazzi was everything of an anti-hero. The Italian defender started competition as a substitute, but the injury of star Alessandro Nesta, permitted him to play. In his presence, the Squadra Azzurra remained the most impermeable defense with only one goal conceded until the final. However, Materazzi’s reputation and harsh play had caused him a red card during round number 16, and a subsequent two-game ban.

THE GAME The referee, Mr. Horacio Elizondo, whistles for kick-off

and France gets hold of the game as Materazzi gives away a penalty to Malouda. Zidane takes on the shoot, and the world holds its breath as Number 10 attempts a “Panenka”. The ball touches the bar and crosses the line as it lands…it’s a goal! Yet, Materazzi quickly redeems himself with a winning header on corner kick, also in the first half. Tension builds up as the game ends on parity, and both teams are pushed towards extra-time. After injuring his right shoulder, Zidane still manages to throw a powerful header, dramatically saved by keeper Gianluigi Buffon. Zidane’s rage finally reaches climax at the 108th minute: responding to provocation, the Frenchman loses his nerves and launches himself head first into Materazzi’s chest. The headbutt sends out the defender sprawling and the French captain is sent off with a red card. The image of Zidane walking past the trophy as he steps out of the

game predicts the epilogue: France has lost the World Cup to Italy!

10 YEARS LATER While the incident created lasting controversy (a giant statue was even erected and displayed in Paris, New York and Doha), both players have enjoyed continuous success. Materazzi was named defender of the year the following season in Italy, and lifted the Champions’ League trophy with Inter Milan. He retired as player and manager of Chennayin FC, leading the team to Indian Super League victory in 2015. After retiring as a player, Zidane was quick to return to football as a coach. His growing influence in former club, Real Madrid, led him to become head coach in 2016. His vision and charisma helped the team move up another Champions’ League final. As for France and Italy, both teams will compete again during the Euro 2016 Championship, on French territory.

WE’RE ONE STEP

CLOSER TODAY Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Gym the first to join the KHK-MMA Partner’s program which will allow local gyms to avail of the prestigious KHK-MMA training from respected athletes and coaches.

T

hey say the hardest battles are the ones fought in the captain’s camp, not on the ground, and the hardest of them all is when you are in the fight business. You must be a fearless commander to set out in the first place. Nonetheless, one does not have to look far to see a new phoenix forging ahead on a promising quest. KHK-MMA, spearheaded by HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa and CEO Mohammed Shahid, has been effectuating the ultimate goal of enhancing and promoting MMA culture in Bahraini society, and in due course, the Gulf region as a whole. “We aim to build a

foundation in Bahrain and the GCC to provide our youth and athletes with the best opportunities to flourish and benefit from these fruitful sports “said Shahid. Indeed, maintaining a prosperous system demands a great visionary, but it takes a resilient leader to fulfill a mission. As part of its global mission to build a foundation and spread Mixed Martial Arts as an integral part of the sports sector in the region, KHK-MMA has officially launched their unique Partners Program. Almost a privilege, KHK will be practically giving all athletes the opportunity to do well out of their professional instructors, expertise, and development program.

“This Partners program is part of our grand vision to spread and merge MMA into our culture. We’ve witnessed day by day what our athletes have been achieving, in their physical, mental and behavioral development. This is what we want to spread in the kingdom, starting from Bahrain MMA Gym.” Mohammed Shahid, KHK-MMA CEO

KHK-MMA

“The communication and relationship which is built through this partnership will help us more and more in providing gyms and athlete support. We want them to benefit but also enjoy it. Our great coaching lineup provided by the KHK-MMA athletic department includes: Renat Lusubov, a great striking coach, Eldar Eldarov, a Combat Sambo expert from Dagestan and Hamidou Dabo, jiu-jitsu Black Belter, handling the ground and submission part. Our pro fighter Hamza Kooheji will also join and help teach the next generation of fighters in Bahrain.

Bahrain MMA, the first MMA gym to operate in Bahrain will lead this initiative. The facility will stand as the premier KHK-MMA Partners gym to adopt the KHK-MMA progressive curriculum catering to both everyday sports enthusiasts as well as fighters looking to pursue a fighting career. It is now a good time for all other gyms to join the movement and become officially “Partners of KHK-MMA”. The program will transfer KHK-MMA philosophical views on the development of MMA along with its fightercentered unique structure that will develop the level of athletes mentally and

physically, taking them to an unparalleled level. The KHK-MMA Partners Program will grant everyone the chance to experience different martial arts and mature their skills as top level KHK-MMA trainers Eldar Eldarov, Renat Lusubov, Hamza Kooheji, and Hamidou Dabo make their presence at the Bahrain MMA gym. The partner academies will also enjoy visits from expert coaches, and seminars from world class professional fighters to support athlete development. By the end of the program, which is headed by UFC Veteran Pete Williams, partner gyms and instructors will be able to represent and teach KHK’s brand of MMA to their own students. In addition to the initial instructor training, associated members will have access to curriculum schedules, class plans, and needless to say, the unlimited support of KHK-MMA. Members of the partner gyms will be directly eligible to take part in KHKMMA club competitions and events hosted under the KHK Promotions banner. The full schedule will be announced on the official KHK-MMA website (www.KHKMMA.com). MMA is one of the most demanding sports out there, it needs dedication, discipline, and mindset that does not know defeat. In return it will evolve you into a post-human, the kind of person that is nothing but a leader, in his family, his work, his society, and lastly himself. The MENA region must see the merit that KHK-MMA is offering in the long run, boosting the amateur level of MMA organizations and clubs to the elite level.

The increase of sports commentators specialized in the Mixed Martial Arts will be a positive outcome for the Bahraini Media Sports, especially since this session has showed a large number of talented youth of both

genders. This will have a positive return on the media in the emergence of such talents and involvement which will reflect on the rise of sports media, and serve as the developmental channel to the sport in Bahrain.

THIS SEASON IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE MIDDLE EAST

NOWISR Director and Technical Advisor of Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation, Tawfiq Nowisr, considered the initiative is one of the signs of rapid development in the sport and among the culture of Arab youth. The urgent need to create a generation of young people who are able to keep up with this stage of MMA through sports commentating is already being filled. He pointed out that sports commentating is an integral part of the success of the various sporting events, especially the Championship

for the Sport of MMA. The support of the youth media field, particularly at the level of sports commenting will develop their potential and enable them to participate in various tournaments and hone their skills in commentating. He extended his thanks and appreciation to His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa on the efforts and developmental initiatives launched.

MOHAMMED DARWISH SAILED WITH THE PARTICIPANTS IN A SUCCESSFUL MEDIA EXPERIENCE Mohammed Darwish said he was very happy to have witnessed the level of the talented participants, as well as their determination in learning the material taught. In fact, the students have the skills and requisite potential

in the field of media. The participants were directly impacted by the successful lecture experience. Similarly, he was happy to showcase some of the media channels that he encountered during his journey. He shared his experiences with KHKMMA with the students and participants from Khalid Bin Hamad’s team. Darwish believes that this is the most successful season for media that he has participated in. He later added that this will have a positive outcome in creating the starting point for sports commentators in the field of Mixed Martial Arts.

THIS SEASON GAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO DISCOVER THE TALENTS OF THOSE INTERESTED IN SPORTS COMMENTATING.

ALSHAIKH Hazim Al Shaikh said that His Highness initiative

to launch the sports commentators specialization course for mixed martial arts, gave a positive outcome to help support the Bahraini youth in various media fields. He also confirmed that it is a successful course and a chance to help support the movement of media, especially in the sports commentating arena. Alshaikh explained that the course included many of the themes that trainees can use to develop their abilities and media potential. He is hoping at the same time for success to all the participants in the journey of their work in the media field. He thanks as well the efforts of the Media Office of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to organize such a unique course, which reflects on the development and improvement of the field in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

TENNIS

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TENNIS Tennis is a ubiquitous sport that will enable you to enjoy long-term benefits. Check out the many health and social rewards you can get from this pastime.

LONGER LIFE

People who participate in tennis 3 hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause, according to physician Ralph Paffenbarger, who studied over 10,000 people over a period of 20 years.

LOW BODY FAT AND LIPID PROFILE

Those who play tennis regularly tend to lose excessive amounts of body fat making them lean and fit. It also keeps their lipid profile in check, never allowing cholesterol to cross the limit. This greatly decreases the chances of severe and fatal diseases like hypertension and stroke.

IMPROVES MUSCLE TONE, STRENGTH, AND FLEXIBILITY 40 | PowerUp | June 2016

Playing tennis over time allows people to tone their muscles. Just look at the sleek physiques of famous tennis players! Not only that, smashing a ball to the opposite court improves one’s strength and the need to chase after said ball increases flexibility.

IMPROVES BONE STRENGTH AND DENSITY

Young players improve bone strength through tennis while older ones keep their osteoporosis in check.

ENHANCES DYNAMIC BALANCE

Because of hundreds of starts, stops, changes of direction, and hitting on the run, one’s dynamic balance is measurably enhanced.

GIVES YOUR

IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOST

Tennis improves the health of the entire body, giving you a better and more powerful immune system through conditioning effects which promote overall health, fitness, and resistance to disease.

BRAIN POWER

Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain thus promoting a lifetime of continuous development.

BOOSTS YOUR MOOD

Tennis players are more optimistic, have greater selfesteem, and are less anxious, angry, and depressed than people who play other sports or are sedentary.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

The physical, mental, and emotional stress of tennis will force you to increase your capacity for dealing with stress.

AGE IS NO BARRIER!

Unlike many sports, tennis can be enjoyed by all ages. This is of especially good news to older people who can enjoy the myriad health benefits of tennis when they’re more susceptible to injury and illness. For more information: Bahrain Tennis Academy +973 3969 7114

STABLES

Muharraq Horse Riding School is a unique concept in horse riding. Incorporating a minizoo and cowboy rides, this place is turning out to be a whole lot of fun for boys and girls of all ages.

M

uharraq Horse Riding School was founded in 1980, and was previously called Smaheej Stables. The Stables was moved from Galaly Gardens in the year 2000 to its new location and renamed the Muharraq Horse Riding School. It was the first horse riding school and the first small animal park in Muharraq. The Park has various types of animals, such as birds, ostriches, crocodiles, monkeys, and foxes and there are also many horses. The horses are in stables, which enables the visitors to have a clear view and move among the animals easily. When you visit the school you will get acquainted with the habits of these animals and see how they live their daily lives. Muharraq Horse Riding School welcomes group visits from schools and kindergartens, clubs and associations, and can provide horse rides at a token price.

@powerupmag

The school rents out horses for special occasions for a symbolic mount. They also have camels, Arabian horses and Shetland Ponies for rent and a Bouncy Castle for children. They frequently hold fun days which include sack races and honoring their advanced riders whom they call “knights”. The place also sells elaborately decorated saddles and grooming supplies for horses. Amongst all horse riding stables, Muharraq is innovative and keen to develop the love of horses and horse-riding among young and old. The place also teaches horse grooming and how to take care of horses and feed them. There are even cowboy and cowgirl saddle-ups with basic

grooming, riding, barbeque, and games for kids and grown-ups for example the Giddy-Up Cowgirl Morning. There are also day camps where people can interact closely with the horses and learn more about these amazing animals. There are even pony camps for kids who want to start training young. MHRS has partnered with many educational institutions such as the French school to eradicate the barrier of fear between horses and people. This place has even sponsored its own Women Endurance Team—the Muharraq Riding School Women’s Endurance Team which trains for endurance horse-riding and even rides out to the sea for fun. This all-women endurance team were the brand ambassadors for Think Pink Bahrain in 2016. For their help and support to various charities and organizations, they have been awarded the Kawthar Association of Social Welfare (Orphan Care) Thanks and Appreciation award. THE INSPIRATIONAL

MEAAD

DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA President, Bahrain Triathlon Association

Dr. Shaikh Saqer finds inspiration in a healthcare professional who will be joining IRONMAN 2016!

T

hat’s it! I have found a person that made all my work worth all the tiredness and sweat! The other day I was in a meeting with a potential sponsor for IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship, Bahrain. The CEO of the company told me that she has a friend who volunteered as a medic in IRONMAN this past December and got really inspired to the level that she has committed herself to participate in the upcoming IRONMAN 70.3 on December 2016. When I found out that this

person was a “she” and a “Bahraini” I could not believe it. I have always wanted this sport to inspire and attract “normal” people, specifically Bahrainis. So I got her number and didn’t waste any time in calling her. Her name is Meaad Alansari, a 31 year old female doctor in the Bahrain Defense Force. Her specialty is anesthesia and ICU. I immediately asked what in particular have inspired her to join IRONMAN, and she mentioned Lew Hollander, the 85-year-old guy I worked very hard to bring to Bahrain so he can make a point to everyone

here, young and old. We invested in him, and now our investment is beginning to capitalize. #Amazing! While Meaad is very new to this sport, in fact her first triathlon was only two months ago, she has very convincing reasons to take on this IRONMAN 70.3 challenge. Being in the hospital all the time, she says today people in their 20’s are becoming sick with diseases that was meant to appear only to those above the age of 50. Because of the recently adapted lifestyle full of junk food and activities that people do without leaving their couches, we are getting

We are moving in the right direction and this is a real-time proof.

42 | PowerUp | June 2016

old unfortunately at a very young age. #Couch Potato! The reason why I am so excited about Meaad is because she is right at the frontlines of our war on horror: silly diseases that we bring to ourselves. She is seeing it all, people entering the hospital with health issues that can easily be prevented with minimal exercise. She takes her job very seriously which is why she decided to lead by example. The best way to lead is to be part of the movement, thus Meaad decided to surround herself with likeminded people. Like all of us, Meaad also faces some cultural challenges. A female here in the Middle East doing triathlon has to shoulder some costs. But, she has very supportive immediate family members, and that’s what keeps her going. This should teach us all a lesson to only listen to those who encourage us because going after our dreams will ultimately make us become better persons. Having been inspired by this young lady, I won’t just sit back with a “Mission Accomplished” sign behind me, NO, it’s time to step on the gas. We are moving in the right direction and this is a real-time proof. This is just the beginning and for the future of health awareness in Bahrain you will not have long to wait. Let’s PowerUp and march on!

POWERUP RATING

HOTTEST HATCH!

This Golf in particular has been designed with the race track in mind. The chassis, the suspension, the brakes, the engine, and the gearbox are all sports-orientated. And the end result is an excellent sports car.

BEST-SELLING MODEL I think that the fact that the Golf is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year answers that question. There’s only one other model of car that’s been around longer, and that’s the Porsche 911. These types of cars, everybody wants to see live for another 40 years, we’ll never get bored of them.

POWER

The Golf R has more power, but is heavier. We’re very lucky to drive this particular car as it’s limited-edition. It has the power of the Golf 46 | PowerUp | June 2016

5/5

R but because it’s a “Club Sport”, its lighter. So they’re not alike, yet the Golf GTI works amazingly well.

PERFORMANCE

On the main road, it has a sporty feel and is ready to go anywhere. It’s kind of wasted on the main roads because you don’t get to push it and experience what its capable of. This particular car was designed for a racetrack in mind so the suspension and chassis on this car is excellent on corners. There’ll always be some understeer from a front drive car but this is the best performing GTI yet. The gearbox is the best I’ve experienced. It feels quicker than the Porsche PDK although it’s the same double clutch technology.

PRACTICALITY

Amazingly, in terms of being practical it does very

well. It’s still a Golf; its just a very powerful and light Golf. The chassis is excellent and you would buy this car because you would take it to the track. Regardless of the modes (sport or economy); the car is very driveable, it’s like a sports car that you would take the kids to school in or go to the shops, no problem.

THE BEST THING ABOUT THE GOLF GTI?

The best thing about the car for me is how it makes me feel to drive it. It’s the sum of all parts. Some people will love it for the noise or the gearbox or the cornering ability, but for me its how I feel when driving it.

RATING

I will give the car a five star rating. There is not a better car in this range.

BAHRAIN SUPERBIKE WINNERS

AND SEASON

ENDER

The most exciting motorbike championship to have hit the island has drawn to a close.

ABOUT BSBK:

T

he unique superbike race in the region, Bahrain Superbike Championship or BSBK ended their first season with the final round held last May 13 at the BIC, Sakhir. The gala dinner was held at The Westin Bahrain City Center. VIP’s, Bahrain International Circuit Board of Directors, BSBK Riders, Motorcycle Club Representatives, and media attended the event. Riders from Qatar won the overall championships for BSBK season 1. Mishal AlNeami and Fahad AlSuwaidi from Ooredo racing team were the 1st and 2nd place overall champions while Ali AlShammari got the 3rd place overall. Presenters of the awards were Shk. Salman Bin Isa Al Khalifa, CEO for Bahrain International Circuit, Mr. Essa Al Awadi, President of Bahrain @powerupmag

Motorcycle Club (BMF) and Sofyan Almoayed, Managing Director for Khalid Almoayed and Sons. Special awards were also given to riders who improved their racing skills. The event honored the special participation and support that the BSBK received from its main sponsors: Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), Bahrain Motor Federation (BMF), Bahrain Motorcycle Club (BMC), Seven Friday, Pirelli, The Westin Bahrain City Center, and Wheels of Arabia; who received a plaque of appreciation presented by the two motorcycle brothers who introduced the birth of BSBK in the Kingdom: Abdulrahman Almoayed and Hussain AlKooheji.

The Bahrain Superbike Season 1 lasted for five months with six rounds that includes 12 races. It involves 15 racers who signed up for the whole season and had three wilds cards that joined one round within the season. The championship is formatted in an “Arrive and Ride” race where the contestant used an identical Ducati 899 Panigale Superbike per ride. BSBK was held at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) and has received support from the track to launch the first series of its kind in the Gulf Region.

ohammed Faqihi, Mishal Alneaimi and Chris Rabie each had twice the reason to celebrate last Friday at National Racing Day held at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir. All three secured a double in their respective categories: Faqihi won both the day’s races in the eighth and final round of the BIC 2,000cc Challenge; Alneaimi followed suit with a double victory in the fifth and penultimate round of the Bahrain Superbike Championship (BSBK); and Rabie claimed another fine double in the third and final round of the Bahrain Motorcycle Racing (BMR) 600. 48 | PowerUp | June 2016

Also among the weekend’s highlights, Shaikh Salman bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa secured the driver’s title in the 2,000cc, earning him the coveted crown for the second time in his national racing career. He had earlier won the title in the series’ very first season in 2007/2008. National Racing Day was organised by BIC in cooperation with the Bahrain Motor Federation. Faqihi was among the stars of the meeting, taking charge in qualifying before cruising to his two race victories in the 2,000cc season finale. Driving a Honda CIVIC, Faqihi secured pole position with a best lap of one minute 19.050 seconds, which was a new personal best time around BIC’s 2.55-kilometre

inner track. Faqihi went on to win the opening 12-lap sprint in 17 minutes 19.234 seconds. He did well to fend off the challenge of newly crowned champion Shaikh Salman, who battled hard in his own CIVIC but had to settle for the runner-up spot 0.833 seconds behind. Tim Birkin in a Honda Integra claimed third place, a distant 24.895s from Faqihi. In race two, Faqihi capped his near-perfect day with a win in 16:09.391. Alex Longden in a BMW 3 Series/F20C was in second place 5.234s off of the winning pace, while Tim Birkin came third 7.066s back. “It’s been a fantastic weekend,” said Faqihi. “I’ve been waiting for a result like this for a very long time, and to put it simply, I’m ecstatic.

“I put in a lot of time and effort into the car to get it where it is now. I was able to get my personal best time today in qualifying and came close to matching it in race one. “It has taken a lot of hard work, learning the performance, how it reacts, and then putting it all together. “It’s a very good finish to this season and it gives me some good momentum heading into next year, which I will be taking one race at a time.” Shaikh Salman had to settle for fourth but that would do little against him claiming the season’s overall crown. He had clocked the second race’s best lap of 1:18.885, which was also the overall best of the day.

While fasting is technically a catabolic process, you’ll offset any muscle loss by eating sufficient calories and signaling your body to retain muscle with the right training program.

here are two types of people during this blessed month of Ramadan: those who gain weight, and those who lose weight. This mainly depends on appetite, although the more common outcome of a short eating window and stomachshrinking is that people tend to over or under indulge and get run-down as a result. It’s all about maximizing nutrient uptake, maintaining proper hydration, and modifying key fat burning/ muscle building hormones in your favor during this month. And of course PREPARATION—If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail! www.powerup-mag.com

NUTRITION

Aim for more calorie-dense foods and avoid foods that might normally bloat you up, e.g. overdoing the oats or dairy. However, if you’re the type that can tend to overeat, begin your suhur with lean protein and fibrous vegetables to curb appetite before moving on to the direct carbohydrate sources. Protein Goal and Calorie Goal: Don’t aim for specific macros during this month: eat your protein first, aiming for 2g/kg bodyweight daily and a calorie goal (maintenance) made up from any combination of carbs and fats. You may find that you naturally eat a deficit from the restricted eating window, but this is not the time to try to

WORKOUT

The best time to do weight training workouts is not while fasting. Training while in a state of dehydration can decrease strength significantly which can create muscle breakdown. This can actually be more detrimental than beneficial. The best time to weight train during Ramadan is after Tarawih prayers at night. This will ensure that you will have several meals and plenty of water in your system before going to the gym. This will also allow you to consume your allimportant post workout meal or shake which is essential for muscle growth and even fat loss. If this is too late then the next best time to weight train is about 1 hour after Iftar. You could do a short but intense 30 minute workout. As for cardio workouts, the best time for maximum fat loss is before suhur. Of course, most people I know will not want to get up at

force it. Remember, portions can be misleading when eating a day’s worth of food over a short period. Stay hydrated at night. Aim for at least 2.5 liters of water or even coconut water is a great source of electrolytes. Try to spread your liquid consumption throughout the evening, so you don’t flush it all and end up thirsty the next day. You won’t ‘go catabolic’ during the fast if you follow the above guidelines. While fasting is technically a catabolic process, you’ll offset any muscle loss by eating sufficient calories and signaling your body to retain muscle with the training program.

around 3:00 AM and do cardio! If you CAN pull this off then the best thing to do is get up and drink plenty of water with a cup of coffee or green tea, wait 30 minutes and perform 30-45 minutes of moderate intensity cardio work like a brisk walk on a treadmill. Short, high intensity cardio like SPRINTING IS ACTUALLY GREAT TO DO DURING RAMADAN. It takes less than 10 minutes and provides maximum benefit in terms of fat burning and lean muscle preservation! This isn’t “Driving Miss Daisy” cardio—it’s very intensive e.g. sprint for 20-30 seconds at full speed (like a dog is chasing you!) and walk for 1 min. Do 4-5 cycles like that and you’re good! Start slow of course and work your way up.

THE REAL

HADY ELCOTT is a pescovegetarian, Youtuber, blogger, triathlete and the owner of Elcott’s Smoothies.

HEALTH QUESTION

YOU SHOULD BE ASKING! PROTEIN IS POPULAR AS A DIETARY NEED, BUT WHAT ABOUT FIBER? YOU’LL BE SURPRISED AT ITS MANY BENEFITS.

BEING A PESCO-VEGETARIAN I often get questions like where do you get your protein? How do you get enough calcium on a plant based diet? What do you eat? Can you even eat anything? All those questions are good ones (and frankly quite old and boring ) but there is a question that matters more than protein. And that’s FIBER. Without enough fiber in our diets, we are missing out on some essential benefits that are key to a healthy living. Here are some facts for you.

BRAIN

Adding 7g of fiber daily can cut stroke by 7%.

HEART

Heart disease risk drops by 9% for each 7g consumed daily, thanks to fiber’s cholesterol-lowering powers.

WAISTLINE

People who simply increased their daily fiber intake to 30g or more lost nearly as much weight as those on a more complicated diet plan that included restricting calories.

KIDNEYS

Getting more than 21g of fiber daily lowers your risk of kidney stones by 22%

LUNGS

Dietary fiber soothes systemic inflammation and may slash risk of inflammatory

diseases like COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. People with COPD have difficulties breathing, primarily due to the narrowing of their airways, this is called airflow obstruction.)

GUT

Eating more fiber can balance levels of healthy bacteria, helping aid digestion.

BLOOD SUGAR

Fiber slows the body’s absorption of glucose, controlling blood sugar spikes and decreasing diabetes risk.

IN A DAY

30G

?

SO ALL OF THIS IS GOOD INFORMATION BUT WHAT NOW

WHAT ARE FIBER-RICH FOODS ?

Well for starters, the majority of whole foods are fiber rich and oh so good for you. Fruits such as dates, raisins, apples, oranges and figs are among the highest fiber-rich fruits. Then you have vegetables such as artichokes, green peas, broccoli, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes and carrots. Next, you have legumes, nuts and seeds such as split

beans, black beans, lima beans, almonds and pecans as great sources of fiber. There are also grains such as brown rice/pasta, barley, oatmeal, whole grain organic cereals etc. Basically any whole food you eat will have a great amount of fiber, I just wanted to point out a few examples to get you started on your fibrous adventures. As I’m typing this I’m sipping on an avocado, blueberry, cacao smoothie. Fiber in a bottle. For more information: Hady Elcott @elcotth/elcotts_smoothies +973 362 2988

TASTY IS THE NEW HEALTHY THE SECRETS TO A HEALTHY RAMADAN IFTAR WITH AL ABRAAJ RESTAURANT

T

he holy month of Ramadan comes back each year with its beautiful warm sentiment on discipline, self-reflection and following the right habits. Amidst the atmosphere, there’s the daily Iftar table filled with elaborate dishes of rich colors and lip-smacking aromas that often pull your hand in after long hours of fasting. The long-known food dilemma strikes you after that feast. How can you tuck into a satisfying iftar yet spare yourself that bloated stomach and self-beating guilt for

eating too much? Early this year, the casual family eatery popular for its Middle Eastern grills, Al Abraaj Restaurant, has announced the rollout of a new, lighter menu section that lends their restaurant’s same signature tastes with less calories. PowerUp can tell you that some of the best tricks and secrets to healthy eating during Ramadan lie within the flap of those menu pages. The new section includes healthy food portions made from nutritious low-fat ingredients and fiber-filled grains, lightly seasoned with Al-Abraaj flavors and cooked

in healthy methods. It even includes light hummus and brown flat bread - who knew hummus can be so light? Some other tasty offerings that stand out on the menu are quinoa salad, grilled salmon fillet, light mixed-grill and low-fat lamb kabab. They have exclusive side dishes such as chopped vegetables, steamed brown rice and roasted sweet potato wedges. These offerings aren’t the typical underwhelming healthy options we’ve all once experienced. These dishes are juicy with flavors, managing to tickle your taste buds with joy, all the while keeping you

nourished, energetic and set to take on another day of fasting. Just remember, whatever you decide to eat, a balanced food plan that’s cooked right will help you enjoy Iftar. EXPERT TIPS

TIPS FROM THE

EXPERTS

This monthly feature will answer reader’s questions from top medical and fitness experts The holy month of Ramadan is filled with opportunities to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit. Here are some tips to get the full benefits of the Ramadan season.

RAMADAN NUTRITION TIPS HOW DO PEOPLE’S BODIES CHANGE DURING RAMADAN? For the month of Ramadan, most people will experience a fast of 12-14 hours depending on how long their day is. More often than not, they turn to fast food, fried foods, and pastries after breaking their fast. Because of this, most females, who are more prone to weight gain, will add 3-5 kg. of weight in one month alone.

ASIDE FROM BEING A RELIGIOUS OBLIGATION, ARE THERE ANY POSITIVE EFFECTS OF FASTING? CAN FASTING BOOST HEALTH AND FITNESS? Fasting is actually very important because it allows you to reduce weight that is not required in your body (fats). This in turn is good for overall health and fitness, as well as being good for your heart, and keeping diabetes in check.

HOW CAN PEOPLE AVOID DEHYDRATION DURING RAMADAN?

DR. SUNIL is a Medical Coordinator and Specialist of Internal Medicine at Aster Clinic, Bahrain.

After breaking your fast, it is important to drink a minimum of 2.5L of water. You can have two glasses of water with some dates once you break your fast. At 11 PM, you can drink four glasses of water, and in your final meal; it is important to drink two to three glasses of water. It is also important to drink water during and after exercising.

HOW CAN PEOPLE HAVE PROPER NUTRITION WHILE FASTING? One of the pitfalls of fasting is that the body is tricked into thinking that you can eat anything: after all, you haven’t eaten for 12-14 hours! However, people with a body mass index of more than 25 have to be very cautious and watch what they eat. It is important to plan your diet for the month so you don’t fall into the trap of eating everything at hand.

SINCE PEOPLE FAST THE WHOLE DAY AND EAT A BIG MEAL AT NIGHT, WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THIS PRACTICE ON THEIR BODIES?

If one fasts gradually, the stomach capacity becomes less and the weight is maintained. However, if one binge eats after fasting, then the metabolism becomes uncontrollable and weight gain is a sure side effect of this.

WHAT TYPES OF FOOD ARE RECOMMENDED AND ALSO WHAT ARE THE PORTIONS? Brown rice and grilled chicken breasts are always good. Dates and salads with no cream dressing but only a tablespoon of olive oil. Fresh juices with no sugar or salt will give you a vitamin boost, as well as raw/ steamed vegetables. You can eat four to five eggs per day while fasting, but make sure to eat only one yolk.

ARE THERE ANY VITAMINS OR SUPPLEMENTS THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN? If one is ill or anemic, and your bodyweight is less, you can continue taking your multivitamins. For bodybuilders, keep drinking your amino acids and protein shakes to maintain your muscle mass. But it is also important to plan your workout regime and reduce the workout intensity.

WHAT WOULD BE THE IDEAL EXERCISE FOR

PEOPLE WHO STILL WANT TO STAY ACTIVE DURING RAMADAN? During fasting, do not exercise as you might feel lightheaded/ dizzy from doing so. After breaking your fast and resting for 45 minutes to one hour is the best time to do some light exercises like walking, stretching, or yoga. It is important to feed your body with nutrients like dates and bananas, water and fresh juice before doing so. For gym goers, 11PM at night, or before your final meal in the morning would be the best time to fit in a workout.

HOW CAN PEOPLE PREPARE FOR RAMADAN MENTALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY? Ramadan is a special month in so many ways. People’s sleep pattern changes, and some people get by with little sleep which makes them nervous and irritable. But it is also a month of activities, charity, and goodwill. If you plan properly for Ramadan, you can make the most of this month by kicking the bad habits like smoking, drugs, and alcohol; and starting good ones like giving to charity, dieting, and exercising. THE SCOTT FOIL 10 WITH GARETH SAYERS FROM TRILIFE

Gareth, who is also a member of Bahrain Club 300, reviews the bike that he used to travel 300kms in. 68 | PowerUp | June 2016

BIKE REVIEW

T

he most recently significant glory for the Scott Foil was with Matt Hayman, who won the world’s roughest race, Paris Roubaix, on an aero bike. Most people think that the Scott foil is a pure speed bike. And yes, in the beginning that was its sole focus. But the 2016 Foil is a new machine! So new in fact, that it has given birth to the term ‘Aerocomfort’, coined by Scott. Don’t fall victim to the assumption that the Foil is a pure aero-road bike. Aerodynamics is only one of the four main objectives for the all new Scott Foil. The ambitious idea was to focus on improving comfort, reducing weight, maximising aerodynamics and increasing stiffness. And believe me, they have delivered something special. The most obvious improvement is the perfectly engineered thinner and lower seat stays. For me, this is where the success of this new machine lies. The new seat stays improve comfort through an incredible 89% increase in vertical compliance. Along with the relocation of the brakes, they also dramatically improve aerodynamics. Then, because the seat stays attached lower down on the seat tube, the rear triangle is smaller providing improved lateral stiffness. Scott has spent two years developing their new truncated foil tubing, allowing them to produce the slimmer and stiffer frameset that you see here. The Shimano direct mount brake system provides class leading braking power thanks to its symmetrical dual pivot system. Also, being placed below the BB, it is more aerodynamic and makes it easier to remove the wheel in the event of a puncture or mechanical problem. The part about this bike that truly leaves me speechless is

I will admit that before I rode the bike, all the reviews and things that I read were just fancy numbers and opinions to me. But believe me, when I say that at high speeds, everything that I ever read about this bike just made sense. It really is one of the fastest bikes that I have ever ridden. My bike was fitted specifically for me by the highly skilled guys at TriLife, Bahrain, using an advanced fitting system called the Smart Fit Radlabor. The system was developed together with Scott to provide any cyclist with a millimetre perfect fit. By now, I knew I was riding a very fast bike. But a comfortable bike? I wasn’t sure yet. A few months ago, me and some other guys at TriLife Bahrain established a group called the Bahrain Club 300; basically it’s a group of cyclists that have officially cycled in excess of 300km in one day, in Bahrain. After just 3 weeks of owning the bike, I completed my 2nd 300km ride, but this time, I was on the Foil. I was quite honestly shocked at the overall comfort I felt while on the bike. I was expecting 10hrs of rough roads vibrating my body to pieces. But that was most definitely not the case. The Scott Foil 10 knocked my socks off! As far as 10hr bike rides go, my back was fine, neck was comfortable and arms were strong. I must admit that for me, an 89kg, 6’2” guy, the standard Syncros RR2.0 saddle was a bit uncomfortable. And so too was the Syncros RR2.0 sweep bar. The saddle might have been a bit too narrow and I find the sweep in the bar adds quite a lot of pressure to your palms. But considering the bike as a whole, these small factors have no bearing on my impression. Scott really has managed to deliver a

It continues to impress me. As with all bikes, you as the customer need to make a decision on what type of bike you want for the type of cyclists that you are. But if you are in the market for a roadaero bike that knows how to

THE WRESTLER

Eddie the Eagle is the unlikely story of a champ who faced defeat at every turn. Cut from the Olympic ski team, he then decided to be a ski jumper. Even with his own father’s disbelief and an entire nation laughing at him, his never-say-die attitude takes him all the way to a historic showing at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.

During the period of Nazi domination, track and field sensation Jesse Owens had a chance to go to the Olympics. His entire race tells him not to associate in any way with Hitler, but he seized the opportunity to show Berlin and the world that he’s the fastest man alive.

Aging wrestler “The Ram” Robinson is long past his prime but still wanting to take on the pro-wrestling circuit. STRONGLIFTS 5X5

COACH.ME

This is the best gym companion when you hit the weights. The app prompts you to complete three lifting exercises with five sets of five reps—hence the name 5x5. StrongLifts coaches you along to give proper breaks in between each set and suggests when it’s time to add more weight. Follow the workout three times a week and you’ll notice a stronger you in the mirror in just three weeks. You will also build muscle and burn fat. Perfect for crossfit beginners and enthusiasts!

It’s great to have goals like getting fit, learning to play the guitar, or being more productive. To nail these goals however, it helps to have expert guidance and someone motivating you along the way. This aptly named app sets you up one-on-one with a pro who helps you put together a plan of attack and then messages you to check in on your progress and helps you with any bumps on the road. Pick from dozens of possible goals, each with an expert on that field.

CALORIE COUNTER—MY FITNESS PAL Exercising is extremely important but you’re not going to get very far if you don’t keep an eye on your diet as well. Calorie Counter by My Fitness Pal is pretty much the best calorie counter you can get on Android. It logs your calories and has a database of over six million foods so you can find what you ate and keep an accurate count. Best of all, it’s free!

PROGRESSION Progression is an app that has a solid fan base and it has turned out to be a legit fitness application. The app contains built-in exercise regimens for you to follow or you can make your own. This is helpful for people with exercise restrictions or want to work on a specific thing (cardio over weight training for instance). The app relies on a time trial style method of motivation where you strive to beat what you did the last time you worked out over and over again. Best of all, it’s free to try!
