FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned.

“HEALTH IS A LIFESTYLE AND I CHOSE IT.” HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa

I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity

to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports helps children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare

to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

In line with the essence of Ramadan, sports have not simply been viewed as a way to stay healthy, but it also teaches life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability, and teamwork. It develops connections that bring people together from all walks of life. This month, Nasser 10 continues to encourage all the athletes to experience the thrills and benefits of sports through the various tournaments that take place during Ramadan. Team Bahrain Merida made us all proud during their journey in the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia. Here we tackle the behind the scenes of the strong team effort they have shown during the grand tour. The Brave Combat Federation fighters reflected on the value of spirituality and faith in their MMA journey. They have announced a social action plan for Ramadan which involves activities for social responsibility. Cycle Safe Bahrain and its participants had exhibited solidarity when 400 cyclists joined its inaugural ride to raise awareness of safety for all the road users. Jodi Cunnama shared valuable tips on how to be safer on the roads, for cyclists and motorists. Fasting in the Holy Month is a devotional exercise. However, we encourage you to try to remain healthy and fit throughout this process. We have covered guidelines stated by the experts to stay fit and healthy while fasting.

FITNESS

SECRETS TO STAYING FIT THIS R AMADAN The holy month of Ramadan is a time for worship and contemplation for Muslims worldwide. While it is the time for a stronger family and community ties spiritually, fasting during this period can be physically challenging and can be mentally draining.

16

POWERUP | JUNE 2017

FITNESS

R

emember, it is always important to take care of your health even during Ramadan. Most people think they would i ediately be fitter during this period, but more often than not, the opposite happens. Here are five tips to help you eep your fitness during a adan

1

UPDATE YOUR ROUTINE

Naturally, your routine will change during this period. You would prefer to get up well before sunrise to have an early morning meal so you also need to ad ust your fitness ti ings. Plan your day, allocate a time comfortable for you to work out, whether it is right before Iftar, after Iftar, or before or after Suhoor.

2

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF RIGHT NUTRITION

A well-balanced meal of protein, carbohydrates and good fats is most likely to sustain you throughout the 15 hours of fasting. Proteins such as eggs and fish or eat, you can include nuts such as almonds, carbohydrates such as sweet potato and fats such as avocados.

3

STOP OVEREATING

Overeating is what normally happens after fasting. People overeat without thinking of the consequences. It is one reason many people gain more weight during this month. Try not to have too much sugar. A rapid rise in your blood sugar level will lead to an excess of insulin released into the blood. It gobbles up the glucose, and a few hours later you may begin to feel sluggish.

4

HYDRATE. HYDRATE. HYDRATE.

Watch your hydration levels. Dehydration during Ramadan can be one of the biggest issues. As you are not drinking or eating throughout daylight hours, it is easy to become dehydrated. With summer temperature rising, you need to have an effective plan that will ensure you have enough uids in a hour period. Make sure you have enough water to drink before you begin your fast for the day. Don’t drink too much in one sitting.

5

YOU CAN STILL EXERCISE DURING RAMADAN

While you don’t want to overdo exercise, you also don’t want to lose muscle mass. It is recommended to work out for a minimum of two times a week, if not more. Any form of exercise is advisable from lowintensity cardio sessions to light weights strength and conditioning and body weight exercises.

6

AIM TO MAINTAIN AND NOT TO GAIN

While fasting, you don’t have to aim to i prove your fitness. our goal must be simply to aintain how fit you are. Some say that if you do not exercise at all during the month of Ramadan, you could go back to the state o fitness you were in our months ago. Your diet during Ramadan is very important with a key point being for you to eat your normal number of calories.

DATES ates are a great way to brea the ast as they provide natural sugars or energy, contain inerals and a good source o fibre. hy not try other dried ruits such as apricots, figs, raisins or prunes

CUT OUT THE REFINED CARBOHYDRATES AT SUHOOR uring uhoor you want to continue to choose uidrich oods to ensure you are

hydrated or the day ahead. This is also the ti e to choose high fibre, low glycae ic inde oods or energy such as oats, uinoa and whole grain granary bread or brea ast cereals.

JULIANNE DICKENSON UK registered Dietitian and Fitness Instructor Member of the British Dietetic Association and The Health and Care Professionals Council UK

DON’T BREAK YOUR FAST WITH HIGH CUT OUT THE SALT SUGAR OR FATTY alt sti ulates thirst, so it s a good idea to add less salt FOODS onsu ing a lot o high at, deep ried and sweet oods will leave your digestive syste in distress and help you to pile on the pounds. Try to ba e oods in the oven or air ryer instead o deep rying and reduce the sugar and oil in traditional recipes.

and avoid eating a lot o salty oods li e pic les, processed eat, cheese, salted nuts or canned oods.

Bahrain Endurance 13 Champion 2010 Ironman 70.3 Champion 2009 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships

THE ‘HOW-TO’ It’s a worldwide issue and has stirred evolving debate since the beginning of modern day motoring, the relationship between cars and bicycles. Jodie Cunnama, a two-time Olympian, three-time world champion triathlete shares the impor tant message on how cyclists and motorists can be better ‘par tners on the road ’. 22

POWERUP | JUNE 2017

CYCLING

T

here are more cars on our roads than ever before and with the current health drive that is happening in Bahrain, hopefully, more bikes too. Bikes and cars can coexist harmoniously, but an attitude towards safe cycling and considerate driving is something that must be nurtured within society with conscious purpose. I have cycled in many countries. Despite practising safe techniques and learning to ride defensively, I have still seen several near misses, and crashes that could have been prevented with better awareness of cyclists. It is the active populations’ job to combat this contention by cycling considerately, within the parameters of the law, and by driving with sympathy and consideration to more vulnerable road users. Cycle Safe Bahrain is an initiative by PowerUp and TriLife to spread awareness to cyclists and motorists on how to share the road safely. Cycle Safe aims to keep you and your fellow road users to be as safe as possible on the roads. It intends to engage stakeholders in enabling cyclists of all levels the ability to cycle safely. Its aim is to focus, improve, educate and amend infrastructures to include safe cycle lanes on Bahrain roads in the future.

ADVICE FOR DRIVING AROUND CYCLISTS H AV E R E S P E CT F O R H UM A N L IF E The first and ore ost consideration when driving around cyclists should be of their vulnerability. Cars are scary. They are big and fast and can kill an unprotected cyclist instantly. A bike and a car are in no way equal in size or potential on the road. It is easy to forget when driving urgently, that the cyclist you pass is a mother, a father, a daughter, a son, a husband or a wife. They are humans, not an obstruction.

AC K N OW L E D GE T H E CYC LI STS ’ RIG H TS TO R I DE A bike has as much right to use the road as a car. The notion that they don’t pay road tax or road maintenance tolls is absurd most cyclists also drive cars. A cyclist does not damage a

road like a motorised vehicle and have a smaller impact on tra fic and pollution levels. If a cyclist is on the road as opposed to a designated cycling lane - it won’t be out of choice. They would prefer to be out of the presence of tra fic. erhaps they are en route to the designated cycle lane. Maybe the lane is badly constructed. Maybe people are walking on it. Perhaps it ends abruptly. Cycling lanes are great provisions, but their existence does not mean a cyclist has fewer rights to be on the road.

room to accommodate this distance, then wait till there is. If you were to stand a metre away from a fast moving car or a train - you might get an impression of just how scary the speed of large movement feels to an unprotected body.

LOOK B E F ORE YOU E XI T V I A YOU R DRI VE R S I DE DOOR Texting while driving has been shown to be more dangerous than drunk driving. The more vulnerable a road user, the more dangerous the effects of driver phone use. It is basic road safety not to use your mobile on the road. Phones and the distraction caused by them kill many cyclists every year.

effects of driver phone use. It is basic road safety not to use your mobile on the road. Phones and the distraction caused by them kill many cyclists every year.

B E WAR E O F THE RI G HT TUR N Be aware of cyclists you have passed when you are turning right. A cyclist may be moving faster and heading straight on your inside and may still have road priority. Pass with consideration and anticipation of your next turn.

B E WAR E O F THE F RON T LEFT TUR N AC ROS S A R IDER Sometimes it’s hard to predict the speed of a cyclist when the driver is turning across the into tra fic. I in doubt, the cyclist has road priority, so wait. Some bikes travel as fast as some cars and won’t be expecting a rogue car crossing their forward path.

GIVE 1.5 METRE TO PASS A CYCLIST

AC K N OW LE DG E T HE BE N E F ITS OF A CYCL IN G N AT I ON There are lots o benefits to other people cycling such as less pollution, a healthier workforce, one less car on the road, increased productivity through health, decreased obesity rates, and hospitalisation for the nation.

CYCLING

ADVICE FOR CONSIDERATE RIDING AROUND CARS WE A R B R I G H TS A ND LI G H TS Although it may seem arbitrary in the heat of the day and clear weather, many drivers could not see cyclists as a cause of accidents. Choose bright clothing and use a ashing light and re ectors on the seat post even in the day. There is never any harm in appearing more visible when riding a bike. Cars appreciate the endeavour cyclists make to be more visible to them.

C H O OSE RO U T E S WI SELY Ride on safer, quieter roads with cycle lane or a hard shoulder whenever possible. Limit riding outside to particular times of day not heavy orning tra fic or evening rush hours. Planning and knowing your route also minimises the risk of being caught unaware on unsuitable roads.

WE A R I D ENTI F I CAT IO N In the horrendous instance of a road accident, an ID bracelet and a phone are vital in calling for help. Hospitals may need proof of insurance before admission and relatives need to be able to locate their missing rider in pressured traumatic circumstances easily.

CYC LE DEF ENSI V E LY Anticipate cars and pedestrian movement. Learn to improvise for the worst driving error and be positively surprised.

24

POWERUP | JUNE 2017

PHOTO CREDIT: DELLY CARR Fast is best left for race day or uninterrupted road stretches, not busy metropolises or twisty, tight roads nearer the city.

S IGN A L W ELL I N A DVA N CE Let drivers prepare to anticipate your actions and directions as early as possible. Indicate turns and signal when you must move out of the road for an obstacle.

CYCL E W IT HI N YO U R CA PAB I LI T I E S Don’t take risks on the road. It is not safe for the rider or nearby drivers. Operate within your safety zone. Don’t ride tri-bars in high winds or tra fic i it s not within your capabilities. Skills will develop in time but should not be rushed at risk of safety.

CYCL E W IT H OT H E RS Cycling with a group increases your visibility to other road users and increases drivers’ accountability. It is important to be courteous to other road users when cycling in pelotons.

“Bikes and cars can coexist harmoniously but an attitude towards safe cycling and considerate driving is something that must be nurtured within society with conscious purpose.”

Ride no more than two abreast, single out if a car is waiting behind to pass. Do not jump lights or stop junctions. Good cycling habits impress as much as bad cycling behaviour can demean all riders cause. Be an advocate for safe and considerate riding.

Born To Light Up The World

P A R AT R I AT H L E T E

O N E O N O N E W I TH S H A I K H A A L SHA IBA In a hundred different ways, Shaikha Al Shaiba has stunned people not only in the sporting community but the whole of the Kingdom of Bahrain. This jewel of a woman has reminded everybody that people of all shapes, sizes and abilities can participate in sport. She has moved many to put themselves out there and start on the path to achieving their dreams. She served as an inspiration for growing within her craft as an athlete she aspires to be. Her smile not only lights up the room but it surely lightens up the world.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL ATHLETE

IT ALL STARTED WITH A GOAL

Born in 1983, Shaikha Al Shaiba lost her arm when she was 18 months old. It was a medical error, and she grew up with it. Like any other hu an being, it was di ficult or her to accept this condition in the beginning. As a child, she became confused especially when she would see other kids who had two full arms. It was not something Shaikha learned to live with comfortably. Some kids would make fun of her. But she reminded herself, life must not go on. This must not hinder her from what she aspired to become. She used to wear a prosthetic arm until grade 6 but at that age; she acknowledged the fact that she doesn’t have an arm. “I needed to step up and live my life like any normal person,” she said cheerfully.

Shaikha’s journey began when she decided that she wanted to be fitter and stronger. Throughout her e periences, she finally figured out she can do everything. “I would surprise myself sometimes. I realised that I had to live my life without limits. I discovered a lot about myself too. I learned that I love to challenge my capabilities in doing things I thought I wasn’t capable of,” she explained.

I would surprise myself sometimes. I realised that I just had to live my life without limits.

TASTE FOR ADVENTUROUSNESS You can tell her story through the things she does as well as through the things she does not do. She would rather not sit still in spite of her condition. For instance, she has always loved sports since she had attended school. She used to take part in running, swimming and jumping hurdles with ying colours. It s learning to adapt that is among the lessons she hopes to pass on to others. When asked about her goal she replied, ”My primary goal will be to remind others that no amount of disability should stop you from being the person you wish to become.”

TRAININGS hai ha trains five ti es a wee o cross fit which includes cardio. Without exceptions, she would do the entire workout with the group. She also added running after her training to increase her stamina. She recently included swimming and cycling to her workout routines.

ON PROVING HER UNIQUE CAPABILITIES

hen hai ha first joined a gym, the instructors would assume that she should be more careful. This led to putting her apart when the workouts were tough. “Given my case, they were deeply concerned about possible injuries which can take place. I took it offensively, and if I would be honest, it really hurt my feelings when the instructors would ask me to step aside in class. That was my greatest challenge. I wanted to show the world that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it and maintain a positive attitude,” she recalled. In just a short amount of time, Shaikha had encouraged other people to love every single

part of them. “There should be no doubt of self-worth. Self-respect and selfconfidence in whatever you choose to do should be absolute. I believe that this will empower and serve anybody. Even if we are a bit different than others, this should not get in the way of loving our one-of-a-kind sparkling unique self,” she explained passionately.

IF SHAIKHA CAN DO IT, THEN YOU CAN DO IT

I ve oined. I was scared at first because I didn’t want to be a burden to anyone or to feel left out. One of my friends, Eman Norruddin encouraged me to join their team ‘The Burpee Dozen’. This was just a start. I would surely do more,” she said excitedly.

WHAT’S NEXT?

For Shaikha, the sky is the limit. You should watch for her next move as this woman is just full of surprises!

hai ha ust finished the Spartan Race Bahrain 2017 (Super) and she couldn’t be any prouder. It was definitely one of the memorable races

I wanted to show the world that nothing is impossible if you just put your mind to it and maintain a positive attitude.

WORDS OF ADVICE FROM SHAIKHA Disability is not when you have a missing organ, it’s when you stop and limit yourself. Accept yourself. Love yourself. Feel special because you are special. Believe in your capabilities. Never ever underestimate yourself.

rave Combat Federation, the largest MMA promotion in Asia has announced a social action plan for Ramadan. The Bahrain-based mixed martial arts promotion features fighters who are committed to the Islamic faith. The organisation stressed its commitment towards the faith and interests of the Muslim fighters. The action plan involves activities for social responsibility and solidarity.

OBSERVING THE HOLY MONTH

The ninth month of the IsThe ninth month of the Islamic calendar is dedicated to spiritual reflection, solidarity and devotion. Ramadan is a period where Muslims around the world reflect on their faith, their mission on this planet and find opportunities to practice

solidarity. The voluntary fasts are made to cleanse the soul and practice empathy for the less fortunate. The MMA fighters do not fail to keep these in mind despite rigid training regimen and tough physical training. “The month-long journey of fasting and prayer encourages spiritual growth, reflection, and compassion for those who are less fortunate. We intend to raise awareness regarding the message of Ramadan and to reflect the message of solidarity through our actions. This month, we request our athletes to elevate themselves from worldly problems and focus on the bigger global picture. Brave Combat Federation has been investing in social responsibility, and we are committed to contributing to the creation of a better future for the world, explained Mohammad Shahid, President of Brave Combat Federation.

MAKING A GLOBAL IMPACT

Brave Combat Federation has collaborated with the charitable cause of Arthur Lader. Arthur suffered from a rare disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Brave Combat Federation lend a helping hand in ensuring his medical expenses are covered. Brave staff visited him after Brave 3: Battle in Brazil, to deliver a check with all the proceedings from box office tickets for the event being invested in his treatment. Elias Boudegzdame, having crowned as the Featherweight champion king after his victory at Brave 4: Elias finds this Ramadan a special time to reflect on the sacrifices and remain thankful while relishing a successful year in his career. As he prepares to defend his belt for the first time against Brazil’s

Lucas Mineiro, Ramadan is more important than ever for the champ who has the opportunity to be thankful for his accomplishments inside the Brave cage while looking forward to his next challenge.

“THIS MONTH, WE REQUEST OUR ATHLETES TO ELEVATE THEMSELVES FROM WORLDLY PROBLEMS AND FOCUS ON THE BIGGER GLOBAL PICTURE.”

MOVING FORWARD

Brave Combat Federation couldn’t be more thankful for an incredible year. The organisation is coming close to its first anniversary. With less than two years since it was established, Brave already held six events, in Bahrain, UAE, Brazil, India and Kazakhstan and had reached out to over 500 million people worldwide. “We are grateful for what

we have done so far, but we are looking forward to the future. This is a time of reflection as Brave has made it a mission to take mixed martial arts all over the world, to teach its benefits and to help fighters have a chance to shine on the biggest stage in MMA. That is what we want to continue doing for the second half of the year and beyond”, commented Shahid.

THE MITTS BROTHERS

The Mitts brothers teach Cuban style boxing, world class techniques and strategies for boxers including Mayweather counter punching combinations. They teach the lost art of counter punching. The program teaches boxers, how to hit without being hit. When most people think of boxing, visions of devastating right hands or left hooks come to mind. There is another side of the sport that even seasoned coaches sometimes neglect - defence. Both basic and advanced defensive manoeuvres are outlined and demonstrated allowing one to hit without being hit. These techniques focus on developing aster re e es, decreasing reaction time, and revealing hidden talents within each person through the use of punch mitts. Mitts Martial Art Bros’ training variations are what separates the ordinary boxer from the EXTRA-ordinary one. The mittwork just got better and

stronger with the Mitts Bros’ style. The mittwork is excellent or re e es, counter and defence which is the most important aspect of learning in this type of sport.

assionate cyclists and fans can’t escape from the exciting atmosphere surrounding Giro d’Italia. It is the toughest race set in the world’s most scenic place. But have you ever wondered what happens behind these famous races?

THEY CHANGE HOTELS EVERY SINGLE DAY The logistics of moving the entire team to different hotels is a complex task. The Team Bahrain Merida has a designated person responsible for the daily arrangements of hotels for the staff and riders. In races such as Giro, the geographic location of each stage is far, thus, making it impossible to stay in one place. The assigned staff ensures that this transition is effortless for the team. As soon as the riders and crew put their suitcases in the team’s truck, their baggage gets transported

directly to their next hotel room. He will then check in the bags to the hotel and give each member essential information, such as room numbers and where their key is. Voila! The team can head on to their rooms without the hassle of checking in!

THEY MUST FOLLOW EVERYTHING IN THE SCHEDULE The team has their full schedule planned out. This program is crucial to the success of the team as each second counts. It is compulsory for the team to follow the program by the book. It contains all the essential details they require each day. Everything is impeccably well-organised that there is no way that one won’t know what to do. The staff sees to it that the things to be done are all properly communicated. It’s also interesting that nobody ever goes late. If the call time is 10:45, expect that the

team will be there at 10:30. Tardiness is not tolerated and being on time is imperative as every second count.

THE PHENOMENAL GIRO The 100th edition of Giro did not disappoint and was extra special this year. The race started during a workday in Italy, but the place was all packed with people. “It didn’t look like anybody was working. Most business establishments were closed. You can’t imagine the effect of Giro until you have experienced it yourself. There were media representatives from Bahrain who could not believe what was happening. We told them what to expect, but the experience blew their minds when they saw it live. It was fascinating” said Kolja Koracak, Brand Director of Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team. One can easily feel the passion of fans who are all screaming and dancing. Italy has some

of the world prettiest roads too, so the spectators were in for spectacular views while cheering for their favourites.

THE MASCOT: FALCO! Team Bahrain Merida launched their official mascot named ‘Falco’ during the Giro d’Italia. The idea behind the mascot was to increase their fan base. Unlike the other teams who already have a solid

fan base, Team Bahrain Merida is still new. They chose something that would cater to the kids because no other teams prepared something for them. After the presentation, Falco became an instant celebrity. Every child in Italy knows him now. The kids would want to go near Falco even though their parents were rooting for another team. Smart move!

CYCLING

ON THE MOVE The staff plays a vital role in the races. Without them, it will probably be chaos.

MECHANICS They check everything related to bikes. They are the ones who prepare the bikes the night after the stage and still double check everything in the morning before the stage. They prepare two bikes for each rider.

THE HOSPITALITY BUS The team’s hospitality bus is an exclusive hangout area for the riders and their I guests. ith a first-class service, this particular bus has a kitchen inside with tables for dining and two hostesses. The bus is where the meet and greet happens especially for the guests. The VIP guests also have the chance to interact with the riders and get the full experience.

THEY HAVE A DESIGNATED COOK

POWERUP | JUNE 2017

They massage the riders after the race. They prepare drinks and protein bars. They also go to the area called the ‘feed zone’ in the middle of the stage to give the riders a bag of food.

PUBLIC RELATIONS The PR’s duty is to take photos that would be used in Team Bahrain Merida’s website and writes a report post-race about the riders - the day’s review, and the next day’s preview. Medical

MEDICAL

The rider’s diet is fundamental to their performance during a race. Hence, Team Bahrain Merida has an appointed cook specialised in the sports industry to serve healthy food for the riders.

The medical team is composed of one doctor and one osteopath. Injuries rarely happen but their presence is important to provide the riders with expert advices and experiences.

THE BIG FAN BASE OF VINCENZO NIBALI

The team’s bus drivers who are very skilled are not just drivers. They also see to it that the bus is always clean to receive guests.

Vincenzo Nibali is the third most famous athlete in Italy. Whenever he would go out, it was like Michael Jackson was there because of many screaming fans. They would sing songs for him, and all were eager to get his autograph. It came to a point where he needed five people to escort him to get to the starting line on time.

SPORTS DIRECTORS The sports directors have direct communication with riders during the race where they talk strategies with the team. They update wind speed, road differentials, and motivation speeches to keep the riders going.

THE LONG HOT SU MMER People often tell you that summer is the time to get outside and be active. Well, that is something debatable especially when it comes to the summer in the Middle East. But can you still stay fit and active? Of course you can, with just few things in mind.

S

ummer heat can be dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions. Our summer is not like any other because ours are long and unbearable even at night. If you want to know how to train in the summer, you probably think Google has the answer. However, let me tell you that what Google blurbs out is something that is NOT for you, or for people who stay in the Middle East. Our summer varies from bits of advice talked about online. I found this out once when I was staying in Los Angeles back in 2005. Once the temperature went down, my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a grill so we can enjoy BBQ on our apartment’s balcony. So I went to buy one only to find out that all the grills have been taken back to the store! The reason was simple, while we use our winter to enjoy BBQ, they do it in the

summer! So word of advice, the only thing you will grill this summer is yourself if you don’t pay careful attention here. The nights are shorter, and the days are longer and much hotter. Before even working out your muscles, you would have already lost al ost all your uids. eplacing your uids is something good, however, losing them and suffering from dryness is not healthy at all. What you should do is focus on two key areas this summer for your training: uid retention and uscle burn. Admit it, sometimes, the sensation of feeling the muscle burn can be addictive. But if we do not shift our training accordingly, we will not feel this sensational burn because we will get drained way before we reach that level as we train outdoors all the time. Therefore, balancing indoor and outdoor training

is extremely vital, with a little tipping the scale towards indoor training.

What you should do is focus on two key areas this summer for your training: fluid retention and muscle burn. In order to retain your uids, you will have to either be outdoors either before

DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA

sunrise or late at night. Warning! Our summer sun is not to be tested at all. Indoor training can be at times interesting. For outdoor lovers, there are ways to emulate outdoor training indoors. There are many tools available today in the market for runners and cyclists. All you need is a bit of investment in this equipment. If you want to know what to do, you can find assive information online, except, what you should search for is ‘How to train during the winter.’ What the West suffers in the winter from extreme climate is something we can learn from for our summer. The good news is that their extreme outdoor unfriendly climate is longer than our summer. There you go, it is not that complicated. Just focus on what’s important. Stay hydrated and do not incorporate your winter program during the summer. Stay safe!

CAR CARE TIPS Check and change the oil. No single step will help an engine last more than regular oil and filter changes. Flush the cooling system and change coolant once a year. A 50-50 mix of coolant and distilled water will keep the cooling system in good shape and prevent corrosion and deposits from building up inside the cooling system.

BENEFITS OF NANO CERAMIC PROTECT As a result of the connection of molecules preparation on a painted surface in a tight web, it crystallises and creates a resistant and durable protection layer. High-quality products are focused on long-term conservation of individual elements, including the attractive appearance of the vehicle. With driving conditions here in Bahrain and the Middle East, Nano Ceramic Protect offers the customer a level of protections against everyday nicks and scratches a vehicle may encounter while driving on the roads. It provides a protective layer against grime, dirt and other aspects of nature that may cause your car to become dusty and dirty. It creates a hydrophobicity effect where dirt and grime are quickly washed away due to their inability to fir ly stic to the cera ic layer of protection. LABRADA 100% PREMIUM MICELLAR CASEIN PROTEIN This is a slowly digested milk protein that is high in muscle building amino acids, making it perfect for nighttime use or any other time that you need a protein that will “stay with you” for several hours. So how does it work? Casein in its micellar form has a unique molecular structure. It forms a “gel” in our stomach as it reacts with gastric uids. Consuming micellar casein before bedtime elevates muscle building amino acids in your bloodstream for

GLUTEN FREE prolonged periods of up to 7 hours, thereby allowing your body to repair and build muscle tissue while you sleep. Labrada’s Casein Protein packs 24g of high-quality casein in each serving, which provides over 5 grammes of naturally occurring branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are critical components of muscular recovery and growth. Labrada Casein Protein also contains 5 grammes of Glutamine and

Glutamic Acid, which are two amino acids responsible for supporting muscular recovery and boosting immune system function. HAVE A PERFECT HAIRDAY THIS SUMMER Summer is here and our hair gets easily damaged and dried by the sun. Who says you can’t have that perfect hair day? One of the stylists from Elie & Jean talked about the essentials to make every day this summer the best hair day ever. ALWAYS USE A CONDITIONER AFTER YOU SHAMPOO If you don’t condition and only shampoo, it will make the hair look a bit fluffier. Sulfate-free shampoo should be used especially this summer.

NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH WET HAIR Whether you air or blowdry, make sure it’s completely dry and seal it with an anti-frizz serum

POWERUP | JUNE 2017

USE THE RIGHT BRUSH TO HAVE THE PERFECT BLOW DRY A brush with dense, uneven bristles gives a smoother blow dry. The brush needs to grip the hair and generate enough tension or the end result won’t be as smooth.

SHOWER WITH LUKEWARM WATER We all love to take a hot, steamy shower, but this is not

the best thing for hair. When the water is too hot, it can strip the essential oils from your hair and scalp. This leads to dryness, which can lead to an itchy scalp, and can leave your hair looking lackluster.

TRIM YOUR HAIR ONCE A MONTH The best looking hair is always the hair that is freshly trimmed. By trimming your hair on a regular basis, you can help eliminate split ends and potential frizz.

AVOID WEARING HATS AND PONYTAILS If you wear a hat or a ponytail that’s too tight, you could be causing damage to your hair.
