FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS Influencing the GCC and the World Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome ofan effective physical education.

In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

KHK MMA WINS ASIAN WRESTLING GOLD MEDAL Adam Batirov clinched the 70kg weight category gold medal for Bahrain at the Asian Wrestling Championships, which concluded in Bangkok recently. Batirov was crowned champion, the final day of the prestigious event after defeating Takhti Cup winner Muhammad Naderi of Iran in the semi-finals. In the final clash, Batirov nearly let the gold medal slip away to India’s Kumar Vinod, who countered a takedown attempt for two points midway through the second period. However, Batirov came back late a takedown and ankle turn for a 5-2 triumph. Batirov’s gold medal was the first for Bahrain in the Asian championships and the second overall, following a bronze

medal won by Mohamed Abdelfattah Mohammed in the 98kg in Greco-Roman category on the first day of the championships. On return at Bahrain International Airport, Batirov and his fellow delegation members were welcomed by high-ranking sports officials, headed by Bahrain Olympic Committee general secretary Abdulrahman Askar. H Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president, held a Sports Festival themed “Let’s Play Sports” last February 6, 2016 at the Khalifa Sports City in Isa Town. His Excellency Hesham Bin Mohammed Al Jawdar, Youth and Sports Affairs minister, affirmed that holding the Open Sports Festival is within the ministry’s strategy to provide various youth and sports programmes for all age categories. The Minister stressed that the festival aims to strengthen harmony, closeness, and mutual understanding among all social segments, citizens and residents through providing entertaining sports activities which cater to all segments. The event was open to everyone, including citizens, expatriate communities, as well as ministries, government departments, embassies, private sector companies, schools, sports clubs, and associations. It featured programmes and competitions for men, women, children, and people with disabilities. The event also featured educational and awareness-raising programmes related to sports, health and nutrition, as well as entertainment, folk and mental games and competitions.

KHK-MMA Bahrain’s Number One MMA Team staged a fight session for their fans with amateurs given 2 minutes on the ring to prove their prowess. It was easily one of the most-watched shows in the event. Another highlight of the afternoon was the fan space created for the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, a Russian elite fighter, now a member of the KHK-MMA team, with 22 wins and 0 losses. He made a lot of people’s day by handing out the MMA gear and posing with his fans.

DID YOU KNOW? Khabib Nurmagomedov holds one of the longest undefeated streaks in MMA with 22 straight wins. Khabib is probably the only MMA fighter who had 3 wins on the same night. He got a call from the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) because he had a perfect 16-0 record in the regional circuits of Russia and Ukraine.

PARKOUR AND CALISTHENICS Parkour and Calisthenics, also known as “street workout”, is a sport that has developed on the streets. Do you want to get fit in a modern and urban way? Would you like healthy competition and self-growth without paying for a gym membership? If so, then street workout is what you’re looking for. The awesome folks gave the public not only calisthenics and parkour performances but also, free workshops. Now you can backflip to your heart’s content.

DID YOU KNOW? Bahrain Parkour is the first and only registered parkour and free-running association in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Since 2010, the team has been recognized as a stunt performance team specializing in customized martial arts, stunts, and parkour and breakdance performances. They have performed inside and outside the kingdom for several local and international agencies. How cool is that?

BASKETBALL No other sport has the appeal of basketball. The Open Sports Festival featured an exciting three-on-three open championship with an open registration for amateurs. This three-onthree (three players on each team, with one substitute allowed for each) is also known as streetball or street basketball. It is the largest urban team sport in the world and is gaining in popularity as fans organize their own open championship three-onthree games.

STREET FOOTBALL Street football is obviously Bahrain’s national pastime. If the elite athletes are playing it big in the soccer schools and in national

DID YOU KNOW? The Bahraini Premiere League of Basketball also known as the Zain Basketball League consists of 12 teams that have dominated basketball games across the country. Currently, the Al-Manama team is the three-time defending champion. It’s anyone’s bet if they will keep the title this year!

CROSSFIT Crossfit is easily the newest workout trend in the island, with many boxes being opened up and people starting to really get into this trend. The popularity is due in part to Bahrain’s Battle of Heroes that has partnered up with The XDubai Spartan Race, a global sporting event that will be happening for the first time in Bahrain this April 1st! Described as a strength and conditioning program aimed at improving muscular strength alongside cardio-respiratory endurance and flexibility.

@powerupmag

stadiums, dozens and dozens of soccer superstar hopefuls make their way to abandoned parking lots after school or work, and on weekends, you’ll see them batting strike after strike.

DID YOU KNOW? The informal street football games do not necessarily follow the formal rules of association football such as a large field with markings, goal apparatus and corner flags, and eleven players per team or match officials (referees). Often, all it takes is a ball with a wall or fence used as a goal. The ease of playing ensures street football’s rising popularity. And in fact, it now even has its own world championship which was started in Berlin in 2006, exactly 10 years ago!

DID YOU KNOW? This workout approach which uses an everchanging mix of aerobic and body-weight exercises is combined with Olympic weight-lifting! But while many people are put off by this idea, Crossfit is suitable for anyone, and I mean literally everyone. The momentum and intensity of the workout is tailored to the fitness level of each individual. The fitter you become, the more Crossfit you can take on!

SPORTS & FITNESS

DID YOU KNOW? The Japan Karate Association teaches an anti-bullying class to help kids stand up for themselves and teach them that bullying is wrong. Parents can also help their kids respond properly to such situations.

SELF- DEFENSE Taekwondo, karate, jiujitsu, and judo all form the umbrella of self-defense that many people are eager to know about. More than knowing the moves for getting out of sticky situations, self-defense actually teaches people to be more tolerant, more self-disciplined, and more respectful of others. Ironically, self-defense practitioners rarely use their knowledge to engage in a fight unless provoked.

18 | PowerUp | March 2016

WEIGHTLIFTING

CRICKET India’s national sport is right up there with street football as one of Bahrain’s national pastimes. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players each on a field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes its turn to bat, attempting to score runs while the other team fields. Each term is known as innings. The game is played by 120 players in many countries.

DID YOU KNOW? Abdulredha Abdullah Yusuf took a gold medal in the 2010 GCC Championships in Bahrain while Ali Hassan finished third. Weightlifting in Bahrain is governed by the Bahrain Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation under the Bahrain Olympic Committee.

Weightlifting is obviously a kick-ass sport and one that is actually creating waves in Bahrain. You may not know it but there are men and women who are serious weightlifters in the island. The women in particular have struggled against cultural barriers to establish and set new standards in weightlifting.

obstacles) as well as the Junior Spartan (for ages 4 to 14). While it does offer competitive elite heats, Spartan Races are for athletes of all levels and abilities and the goal is to rip people away from their couches into the great outdoors and inspire them to lead a fitter, healthier life. Participants can enter individually or as a team. One of the main benefits is working together to

overcome the various challenges and help each other excel. Rayyan Yacob Agha, MENA managing director of Spartan Race said, ‘’We have seen firsthand how Spartan can change lives and give people the motivation they need to achieve a new level of fitness and wellbeing. Taking part is an incredible experience and the majority of people catch the ‘Spartan Bug’ after experiencing the race only once and come

back time and time again determined to improve.” ‘’Bahrain’s desert terrain offers a particularly exciting opportunity for athletes to test their skills in a unique environment and last year’s race in Dubai attracted a number of elite competitors from Europe and the US’’ added Rayyan. The Spartan team is running free weekly Workout Tours every Friday at Al Najma Club (Juffair) from 9-10am to help people

CYCLING

CYCLE

SAFE BAHRAIN

All around the world cycle safety is becoming a great concern. Cyclists are very vulnerable in road accidents as compared to motor vehicles. We don’t want you to be part of road casualties. Cycling is great fun and an excellent way to get around.

Here are a few simple tips to stay safe when sharing the road.

BE SEEN

Wear high visibility or brightly coloured clothing and use lights.

BE AWARE

Watch for car doors opening, potholes, rubbish, grates, and pedestrians. Always check for turning vehicles.

BE PREDICTABLE

Make eye contact with other road users. Maintain a straight line and a predictable manner.

BE CONFIDENT

Use hand signals. Ride at least one meter away from parked cars to avoid people opening their doors on you. Make use of the shoulder lane and avoid riding on the road with cars.

BE SAFE

Follow the road rules and choose the safest route.

BE PATIENT

Slow down near parked or lined up vehicles. Pass slowly and only when safe.

BE PREPARED

Wear an approved helmet and check your bike regularly - brakes, tires, chains, lights, and reflectors.

TO MAKE ROADS AS SAFE AS THEY CAN BE, MOTORISTS NEED TO BE AWARE OF CYCLISTS TOO: One thing that is very important to remember is that most cyclists are motorists too. And the same thing applies to the reverse. A great deal of motorist are also cyclists so mutual understanding is very important when sharing the road. It wouldn’t take too much out of your day to be a little more patient with cyclists, and if you are the cyclist, try and predict the drivers’ next move. A little give and take goes a long way on today’s roads. When turning watch for cyclists coming up on your inside lane and don’t cut them off. Give cyclists a wide space when overtaking. At night, dip your headlights when approaching cyclists. In wet weather, allow cyclists extra room as surfaces may be slippery. Remember, cyclists and motorists are equally entitled to use and share the same road space. Respecting all road users helps everyone benefit from travelling by road. They are also on their way to winning one million US dollars as part of the Nasser bin Hamad Triple Crown Challenge, which asks athletes to win the top prize in the IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai, Austria, and Bahrain in one single year to qualify for the Triple Crown. At the moment, only two athletes are viable to win this award: Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf. Daniela took home the prize last year for winning all three races. Jan Frodeno is a German triathlete who is the gold medal winner in men’s triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the 2015 IRONMAN World Championship, and the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. AT WINNER’S FOOTBALL!

We were excited to try out boxing – but after a grueling experience which consists of almost a week of huffing and puffing as we climbed over stairs, lifting ourselves from the chair, and out of the car, the question is: do we want to do this to ourselves again? The answer is yes!

BOXING IS A MARTIAL ART AND COMBAT SPORT IN WHICH TWO PEOPLE THROW PUNCHES AT EACH OTHER, USUALLY WITH GLOVED HANDS. THE GOAL IS TO WEAKEN AND KNOCK DOWN THE OPPONENT. BOXING IS AN EXPLOSIVE, ANAEROBIC SPORT. THE ACT OF THROWING PUNCHES ROUND AFTER ROUND, WHILE CONTENDING WITH AN ATTACKING OPPONENT IS A DAUNTING TASK. IT IS PERHAPS THE MOST PHYSICALLY DEMANDING SPORT OF ALL, AND BOY, WERE WE TIRED! IN FACT, IT HAS BEEN CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE MOST SPARTAN FORMS OF TRAINING. 26 | PowerUp | March 2016

FUN FACTS The Spartans were from a city-state of Ancient Greece, considered to be unique because their society completely focused on military training and excellence.

EQUIPMENT

Every person who goes to the ring must wear gloves. This will enable fighters to spar, work on the heavy bag, and work on the proper blow techniques with the trainer. There is also a protective headgear to protect you from blows to the face.

STANCE

The proper boxing stance is left leg forward with gloves to the face. This stance allows you to strike a blow with your left or right hand while protecting your face from your opponent. www.powerup-mag.com

BEGINNERS TRAINING WARM UP

The warm-up almost killed us! I guess for people who are not used to having strength or resistance training, the warm up for boxing would seem like a shock. We did sets of fitness moves like stretching, jumping jacks, push-ups in very fast intervals that were designed to ignite our bodies for the hard training to follow.

BASIC PUNCHES The proper boxing stance is left leg forward with gloves to the face. This stance allows you to strike a blow with your left or right hand while protecting your face from your opponent.

1

SHADOWBOXING

JAB The jab is the most important punch in boxing. It can attack, defend, counter, score points, make space, and among other things. It’s your longest, fastest punch, uses the least energy, and leaves you the least vulnerable.

2 Left Foot Forward,

3 Left Foot Forward, jab with the left arm

4 Left foot forward, jab with the right arm (extend right leg)

5 Left foot forward,

uppercut with the left arm

HOOK OR CROSS The hook or cross will naturally be your strongest punch because it comes from your dominant hand and gets leverage easily from the back. When combined, the jab and right cross become known as the basic but incredibly useful 1-2 combination.

6 Left foot forward,

uppercut with the right arm (extend right leg)

BOXING IS A COMBINATION OF ANY OF THE ABOVE PUNCHES PLUS SIDETO-SIDE MOVEMENT WHICH ENABLES ONE TO DEFLECT THE OPPONENT’S BLOWS AND THROW SOME PUNCHES OF HIS OWN.

UPPERCUT The uppercut is a great punch to use on the inside or even mid-range. It’s more powerful than the jab, comes fast, and can be quite unexpected. The only risk is that you have to be closer to your opponent and your left shoulder is not up to defend against your opponent’s rights.

Book this experience through @powerupmag

SPARRING

Coach Mike used the flat mitts to practice us one by one on the combination moves. He was always getting us excited, perfecting our form and stance, and allowing us to see our mistakes.

HEAVY BAG

Left Foot Forward, Punch with the left fist Punch with the right fist (extend right leg)

Shadowboxing is boxing in front of a mirror to see and perfect the moves you were taught. It also allows you to deflect blows from your opponent because you can see how the punches will be thrown. Coach Mike told us to use shadowboxing to get ready for the sparring.

Punching the heavy bag seems easy in the movies but in real life, it is extreme. Coach Mike asked us to duplicate the punches that we did when training with him in the flat mitts and while shadowboxing.

POWERUP VERDICT

Boxing is a win for us! Though tiring, we wanted to do some boxing again. We find boxing as the best way to release those tensions after a hard day’s work. We’re too tired to go to the gym at the end of each day but it seems boxing is fun and a good stress-reliever. We’re seriously thinking of going back for some group sessions. This is one of the most exciting things we’ve ever done! Thank you Winner’s Football and Coach Mike! For more information: Winners Football Center Tel. no. +973 17 442434

SKYDIVING ANDY GOODALL

THAT CRAZY OLD SPORT

British Parachute Association Instructor Examiner

Despite the fact that many people think skydiving is a crazy sport—done by crazy people, you will find it is amazingly normal. See, the only thing you have to be good at in skydiving is the coordinated movement of your arms and legs, and a lot of people can do that for sure.

P

arachutes were first used effectively in World War I in fighter aircrafts. However this practice was discouraged since pilots might want to jump rather than fight. During the Second World War, it became de rigeur military training for airborne operations. After World War II, there was a surplus of parachutes which could be bought on the civilian open market. Ex-military personnel managed to procure the surplus parachutes and with the help of a friend who may own an airplane managed to start jumping. Pretty soon, the sport of skydiving was born. Throughout the years, it became regulated – safety measures were put in place and rules for skydiving began to be enforced. 32 | PowerUp | March 2016

STARTING OUT

For people starting out in this hobby, tandem skydiving is the norm. There is a half-hour instruction after which the student is ready to make his first parachute jump attached to a qualified instructor. The only thing that the student has to worry about is the jump itself. To those who wish to pursue skydiving as a sport, AFF, the next level, is a worldwide qualification. The Accelerated Freefall (AFF), which is a structured syllabus to qualify you as a skydiver as per the British Parachute Association Rules requires a minimum of six hours ground training before you can jump from an airplane with two instructors. The AFF student is responsible for opening his own parachute.

The course consists of a minimum of eight jumps; you jump with 2 qualified instructors who will hold on to you as you leave the aircraft for the first three jumps. During the AFF training, they will provide safety and coaching. Once AFF has been completed and you are a qualified skydiver, there is then a system of licenses to go through which may lead on to various disciplines in the sport such as freeflying, belly flying, or even wingsuiting. You might even consider entering skydiving competitions.

WHY SKYDIVE?

For many people, skydiving is part of their bucket list. Floating weightless through space and seeing spectacular sights like the gigantic statue of Jesus Christ in Rio

de Janeiro or the immensity of the New York City skyline makes people want to try this sport at least once in their lifetime. Also, it’s a very easy sport to get good at, the only skill you have to master being air deflection – raising your arms to the left or the right to deflect air doesn’t seem like a very complicated thing to do. Finally, it is a genderless sport with both men and women entering freefall at any given moment. Why don’t you put it on your bucket list? The nearest jump site is half an hour by plane at Al Ain Dubai in the desert.

AARON FAITH

British Parachute Association AFF Instructor

STRENGTHS

How many times have you heard this at a meet? “What the heck happened to our 21s? They used to be so good.” BY AARON FAITH

I

n a two-car race, with both cars being equal, which car will win? – The car driven by the driver with the most skill. It’s our strengths that place us in pole position. We win the race because we are better than the rest of the competition. What about this mindset? – The driver who made the most mistakes lost the race. That can also be true but there’s something I really hate about this approach and the whole thinking behind it. I’m not trying to sell you some sort of theory on sport psychology and promote a positive mental attitude. I’m simply questioning the physical time and effort we put into a skill we are not good at. Why do we do that? Why did I use to do that? I will speak for myself here but I am far from alone. As the competition draws near and the time, money and jumps left are slowly being reduced, we start to naturally apply our critical eye on our performance – areas like weak exits, blocks and random builds. I can even remember feeling like I have spent almost a whole training camp

@powerupmag

on these areas. We didn’t get enough jumps in due to bad weather so we prioritized certain aspects. We made quick fixes but it lacked the repetition needed to lock these skills in. I remember feeling so frustrated at the end of the camp. This doesn’t only happen in training camps, I’ve watched teams do exactly this with just 10 jumps to prepare right before a meet. They spend several jumps working on that block move they are not happy with. They train with a feeling of mediocrity, poor closes, rushing, and of the team being out of synch.

A NOVEL IDEA

But what if the team instead spent that time doing dives with some of their best blocks? They would then build a team pace of calm and confidence, of being in tune. By training their strengths, they would rehearse great

skydiving and carry this assurance into the meet, which is a big morale-booster. Obviously, we need to work on areas that need improvement, but you don’t have to be the best at every block in the dive pool to win the Nationals and you could win if you were better at just 55 percent of them! To stay better at any skill, you have to practice it. Know why they are your best blocks and invest in them. Don’t allow yourself to get distracted for too long in one area, especially if it’s negative. Every team has their best blocks and their worse blocks, accept that.

PERFORM AT YOUR PEAK CAPACITY

Training in your strengths trains the team to perform at a higher level – this spills over into the weaker blocks, so they improve naturally, without

undue frustration. Rehearsing your best exits builds the team’s ability to fly on the hill, a vital third of the competition skydive. Your weaker exits will benefit from the flyers knowing what a great exit feels like and how to fly together in close communication from the door. How you divide your time between the good and the bad depends on how good and how bad, but at the end of the day, the most consistent team will win – so try to have some sort of equilibrium with the time and effort you put into your areas. Think in terms of military tactics on the battlefield. A British tactic taken from the Romans and still used in large scale battle: if you are facing the enemy across several areas and say the left flank is losing but the right flank is winning, you have a choice to make. Invest your reserve troops in which area, left or right flank? The teaching is to invest in what is working! Focus on your strengths!

TOWARDS AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE It is a proven fact that sports makes people stronger, more mentally active, and happier. Even the people who are disinclined to engage in sports know that there are in fact many health and mental benefits to engaging in it. In fact, there are no side effects to an active lifestyle, so why are people not investing more time, money, and effort into it?

T

here is no doubt that becoming active and healthy has excellent spillovers to our professional careers and personal relationships, but what are we actually doing about it? We are living in a time that is full of interesting and attractive means that would allow us to become better individuals. The easiest step is to get those fitness gadgets and participate in what they offer. Recently, the number of “smart” and “activity tracker” watches has exponentially increased, they are everywhere! For example, I now have a fancy Garmin Fenix 3 wristwatch which almost has my complete life in it. I am also pretty sure that other smart and fitness tracker watches are as important to their owners as the Fenix 3 is to me.

34 | PowerUp March 2016

Because of this watch, my life is definitely much better, it knows everything I do whether I sit, stand, walk, run, swim, bike, sleep, and much more. These smart gadgets know how to make us hate being couch potatoes. All of a sudden, sports is like a video game, because smart gadgets interact with each other in some intelligent way and they push you to compete with yourself

and others as well through an electronic social platform like the Garmin Connect, Strava, etc. They also tell us complete inside out information about how our running is going, when was the last time we went out cycling, and how many more steps to take in order to reach the daily goal. Here’s the thing, while today smart phones are improving productivity and communications in the “work” space, smart fitness gadgets are also improving physical productivity. Not only is my Fenix 3 much cheaper than someone else’s Rolex, it can also do tricks like tell me how cool I am because I am taking positive steps towards a more active lifestyle. Why don’t you step up and take charge of your life too? I challenge you!

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a form of self-defense that focuses on grappling and especially, ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century, which was itself based on a 36 | PowerUp | March 2016

othing drives like a Subaru, because nothing is built like one. Made in Japan, each Subaru model is engineered to instil confidence in the driver’s mind while giving the power to deeply engage with life. The Subaru BRZ marks a return to the fundamentals of sports car design, emphasizing low vehicle weight, an ultra-low centre of gravity and precision steering. Powered by Subaru’s FA-Series with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre and a 200-horsepower BOXER engine, the BRZ is a sports car that does not sacrifice everyday comfort and practicality, while delivering an estimated 14.45km per litre in highway fuel economy (with available 6-speed automatic

transmission). Motorcity, the sole distributor of Subaru cars in the Kingdom of Bahrain, has announced a limited special offer on the BRZ. Priced at BD11,200 and now only BD 9,995, the offer includes free satellite navigation, free reverse parking camera, 5 year free roadside assistance as well as a 5 year warranty.

SPORTS CAR BASICS The low-slung BRZ delivers pinpoint handling precision and an unmatched driving experience for sports car enthusiasts of all skill levels. Using a large proportion of high-tensile steel, with aluminium for the hood, the Subaru BRZ weighs 1254kg which is critical to its agile handling. The Subaru BOXER engine, with its inherently

low height and its mass, concentrated low in the body, contributes to a low centre of gravity in all Subaru models. For the BRZ, Subaru took maximum advantage of this characteristic. A rear-wheel drive configuration allows placement of the engine lower and farther back in the BRZ than in any other Subaru model in order to attain the best possible centre of gravity and polar moment of inertia. The Subaru BRZ has its centre of gravity at just 18.1 inches – among the lowest of any factory-produced car in the world. 200-HORSEPOWER BOXER ENGINE Fundamental to true sports car character, the 2.0-litre BOXER engine combines low weight with high compression and high-revving responsiveness. The engine delivers 200 horsepower at 6,400 rpm, with a high specific output of 100 HP/litre. The Subaru Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS) is instrumental in helping the engine produce a broad torque curve to help make the BRZ feel responsive in daily driving. An unbelievable adrenaline rush in eight point one seconds. Whether riding or driving, this is the ultimate racing experience.

A

t the back of a dragster, I found myself the passenger of the awardwinning race car driver, Mohammed Kanoo. My heart was beating as fast as a butterfly’s wing. The dragster literature promised an unbelievable adrenaline rush, allowing you to race down the strip at approximately 130 mph in a 10 second ¼ mile drive! This dragster is an 800-horsepower mean machine guaranteed to give you the ride of your life. Everyone involved in this track experience was totally committed to giving me an unforgettable time. Patrick from the BIC was our guide and told me to be calm, many people have gone to their track and have lived to tell the story. At the last moment, I wanted to back out, especially after all the 42 | PowerUp | March 2016

people kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to do this. However, I basically had no choice as they got me strapped in and in half a second, Mr. Kanoo was flying off the air. I thought: This is it, and gritted my teeth. But that was actually a false start as the dragster backed up to the starting line. He told me to take a look at the time written on the giant scoreboard on the track. I barely had time to see that somebody was waving or dropping his hand and we were off, in a speed approaching that of light. There was an electrifying burnout and a heart-pounding launch off the starting line that had me biting my lips. Many people talk about life and death moments, and how you see things and people in a blurry flashback in front of your eyes. What I saw

this time were lights racing by, as if in a blur, mainly because we were going so fast. It was as if the ride was one of the longest rides of my life and yet it only lasted 4 minutes. We covered the full ¼ mile in eight point one seconds! When we landed to a full stop, I was grinning from ear to ear thinking: That, my dear friends, was an adventure! On another note, Mr. Kanoo was unhappy, he felt that we went too slow! I already felt that my heart expanded and contracted a million times, but this racer sees things differently. I would definitely repeat this BIC adventure and perhaps next time, be in the driver’s seat. For more information: Bahrain International Circuit Tel. No. +973 1745 1785

A BREAKFAST TRADITION For many people, breakfast is a humdrum affair eaten on auto-pilot while walking out the door; at Petalo Café, it is transformed into a charming meal that is bound to wake up your senses.

A

good breakfast has often been spoken of by health experts as one of the best ways to start the day. Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast—that’s where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast, you are actually running on empty—like trying to start a car without petrol. Breakfast in the Middle East isn’t something to be rushed. In Arabic culture, it is a little feast with long talks over the table and a spread of dips like hummus, foul, baba ganoush, and of course, the ubiquitous

47 | PowerUp | March 2016

Khubush (Arabic bread), which completes any meal. Unlike Western culture, coffee is not traditionally drunk at breakfast as it is used as an aperitif, a digestive, and in the afternoon shisha breaks. So instead, there is tea or juice. Many restaurants do have a breakfast menu, but nowhere is breakfast as celebrated as at Petalo’s. Le Petit Djeumar Oriental, or the Bahraini traditional breakfast, is re-imagined by the awesome chefs of this boutique café’ as a mezze (small share plates) of shakshouka (eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers and onions, and spiced with cumin); labneh

with zaatar, foul medames (fava beans in oil) with lemon; warm pita bread; saffron vermicelli; potato harra (potatoes, red pepper, coriander, chili and garlic fried together in olive oil); and Karak tea. The variety of tastes and textures is an inspiring way to start the day. Essential to any cooking in the Arabian peninsula is the concept of hospitality and generosity. Meals are generally large family affairs with much sharing and a great deal of warmth over the dinner table. Petalo continues this tradition by making meals for sharing between family and friends. The act of lacing the table

with little dishes creates a sense of ceremony and community, one that Petalo is in the habit of doing; not only with food presentation, but also with personalized and efficient service. Middle Eastern food—or the so-called Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, hummus, dates, and seeds has long been popular for its many health benefits including reduced risks of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. HEALTH SPORTS&&WELLNESS FITNESS

THE BEGINNERS GUIDE TO

Can fasting help you lose weight, improve your overall health , and power up your energy levels? Let’s find out. WHAT IS INTERMITTENT FASTING? Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. Most people already “fast” every day while they sleep. Intermittent fasting can be as simple as extending that fast a little longer. Contrary to what we may think, intermittent fasting is actually quite easy to do. Reportedly, many people felt better and gain more energy during a fast. Intermittent fasting is not recommended for those with health conditions of any kind. It is safest to consult a doctor before changing your usual routine. 50 | PowerUp | March 2016

WHY FAST? Fasting for thousands of years. Many religions have made fasting obligatory. There is also nothing unusual about fasting since our bodies are used to some form of fasting during sleep. Modern research also mentions that it does provide the benefit of weight loss and metabolic health.

BENEFITS OF INTERMITTENT FASTING:

Apart from helping in reducing calories and weight reduction, it makes healthy eating simpler and easier. Short-term fasting leads

to several changes in the body that makes fat burning easier. This includes reduced insulin, increased growth hormones, enhanced epinephrine signaling and a small boost in metabolism. It can be beneficial for holding on to muscle while losing body fat, unlike other calorie restricted diets where you lose muscle along with fat loss.

HOW BODY STORES FAT Fat is stored as adipose fat tissues in almost every region of the body. A small amount of fat,

about 300-400 grams, is stored in our muscles. This is called intramuscular fat and it is stored in skeletal muscles, organ muscles and other involuntary muscles. However, the majority of fat is stored around the organs and beneath the skin. The amount stored in different parts of the body depends on genetic makeup and individual hormonal balance. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do to change the way our body distributes fat. But, you can definitely change the amount of fat that is stored.

WHAT YOU EAT IN PRIVATE, YOU WEAR IN PUBLIC

TYPES OF INTERMITTENT FASTING

This method involves fasting everyday for 14 to 16 hours and reducing your daily food intake to 8 to 9 hours. This method of fasting is actually as simple as not eating anything after dinner, and skipping breakfast. You can drink water, coffee and other noncaloric liquids during the fasting period to help you stay hydrated.

This method involves fasting for 24 hours i.e. from dinner one day to dinner the next day ,from lunch to lunch or breakfast to breakfast, they all work the same. Water, coffee and other non-caloric drinks are allowed during the fast, but no solid food. It is very important to eat normally during the eating periods. This fasting technique can be done once or twice a week.

This fasting involves fasting every other day. Alternate day fasting means fasting every other day, either by not eating anything or only eating 500 to only a few hundred calories.

Intermittent Fasting (Lean Gain Method)

Diet Followed:

1.8 grams of protein & 1.5 grams carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight

Fueling my body with required supplementation for Strength & Conditioning Training

Diet Followed: After personally trying most of the fat loss techniques, I came up with a 21-day challenge and it turned out to be a success. Whether you are trying to drop a few pounds, lower your stress levels or simply looking for new ways to eat healthy, this 21-day challenge may help you by boosting your mood and even metabolism.

Female hormones tend to favor fat storage around the hips & thigh area, while male hormones encourage fat storage around the middle.

HOW THE BODY STORES PROTEIN Protein is not stored the same way as carbohydrates & fat. It forms muscles & organ tissue, so it is mainly used as a building material rather than an energy store.

However, proteins can be broken down to release energy if needed. Therefore, muscles & organs represent a large source of potential energy. Protein is not usually a

/powerupmagazine

major source of energy, but it may play a more important role during the latter stages of very strenuous or prolonged exercises as glycogen stores become depleted. Extra protein is needed to compensate for the increased muscle breakdown which occurs during and after intense exercise, and to build new muscle cells.

HOW BODY STORES AND USES CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates are an important fuel for exercise. Carbohydrates are stored as glycogen in your muscles, and must

1.8 grams of protein & 2 grams carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight

Ketogenic Diet and Aerobic Exercises (Cardiovascular Training)

Diet Followed:

High Protein & Good Fats (2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight )

be re-stocked every day. The purpose of liver glycogen is to maintain steady blood sugar levels. The purpose of muscle glycogen is to fuel physical activity. The longer & the more intense the workout gets or the more competitive the event is, the greater your carbohydrate needs.

F1 DRIVERS – FITNESS BURN

TAKE A SNEAK PEEK AT THE FITNESS HABITS OF SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP FORMULA ONE DRIVERS. BY JOHAN ESTERHUIZEN, BIOKINETICIST

T

o most observers, Formula One drivers may not seem very athletic. I mean, sitting in a car for 70 laps can’t be that strenous? That’s exactly what I thought, but after attending and conducting some of their fitness sessions, I can boldly say that these drivers possess some of the most finelytuned bodies on earth. As the technology of racing cars has changed, so have the physical demands on a driver’s body. Advances in aerodynamic grip have created considerable g-forces during a car’s highspeed cornering, as has its braking with the carbon

brakes. Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and other drivers can burn around 1400 calories and lose up to 3kgs of body weight in sweat during a race. Just like endurance athletes, drinking enough water and having a super clean diet is of utmost importance for their health and success. Fitness fanatics Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg have completed triathlons in competitive times, and Fernando Alonso has cycled with Tour de France winners. But just what are the particular fitness challenges unique to driving cars at over 300km/h?

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM F1 DRIVERS KEEP IT FRESH

Doing a variety of fitness activities and sports that you enjoy, will keep you motivated longer to stay active.

KEEP THE HEART HAPPY Adding High Interval Intensity Training will not just assist in lowering your body fat, but also prepare your body and mind to handle the stresses of everyday life.

EAT CLEAN, GET LEAN

Focusing on eating smaller portions more often

and eating the right types of food – fruits, vegetables, lean meat and good fats – combined with drinking enough water, especially in hotter climates, will keep you healthy and stronger for a longer period.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Prevent injuries by correcting bad posture and muscle imbalances, and use supplements when needed, to help with the body’s immunity.

The average human being has a resting heart rate of about 70 beats per minute while the average Formula One driver’s resting heart rate is 45 beats per minute (some even lower). It is vital for them to have a highly efficient cardiovascular system to avoid fatigue at any point in the race. Fatigue leads to mistakes, which can be deadly in the racing business. During the race, the heart rate can be an average of 170 beats per minute, the same as a marathon runner, and can go as high as 200beats per minute in certain situations. The intense concentration, huge amount of adrenaline and physical strain can cause this high heart rate.

THE TRAINING: A mixture of endurance and high intensity interval workouts with varying heart rate zones. Endurance activities include rowing, cycling, running, kayaking, cross-country skiing and swimming. In season, with less training time available, interval training is more commonly used when the training zone is from 120200 bpm. The Interval Training will also help reduce their body fat percentage to around 7-10%.

POWER BASE

The drivers’ bodies have to adapt to the unique stresses on the track. A head and helmet together can weigh about 7kg. Add about 4 g-force usually experienced when cornering and the neck has to support 28kg of weight. The twists and turns

/powerupmagazine

of the tracks demand the core, arms and legs to be strong when controlling the vehicle. The driver’s legs are set for heavy braking, which demands a sudden full leg force of up to 80kg, with as many as 200 full brake applications in a race.

THE TRAINING: Light weights, higher reps, focus on lean muscle. Bulking up is counterproductive for race drivers. Neck strength, where manual resistance, elastic bands, as well as speciallydesigned machines and helmets are used by some teams. Basic exercises like squats, pull-ups, pushups and shoulder presses. The core training incorporates rotation exercises with weights, combined with postural exercises. Stability ball training to stabilize the shoulders, hips, spine and neck.

COORDINATION AND REACTION The drivers have to be alert for different situations in the race, which makes the training of hand-eye coordination and reactions crucial. A slow reaction time can be the difference between winning and losing.

THE TRAINING: To improve hand-eye coordination, concentration and reaction time, drivers will often incorporate other

fun activities into their physical training regimes. A popular training aid is the batak reaction board, where the aim is to hit as many randomly-lit lights on a specially-designed board within 60 seconds. Catching a tennis ball from a wall. Catching a tennis ball/ medicine ball whilst doing sit-ups or other fitness activity. Badminton and other fast reactive sports.

WEIGHT LOSS

4

CLEAN OUT YOUR CUPBOARD

Of fattening food that is! If you have chips in the pantry and ice cream in the freezer, you’re making weight loss harder than it has to be. Reduce temptation by purging the cupboard of fattening food so that if you want ice cream, you’ll have to walk out of the house to get it!

5

GET ENOUGH ZZZ’S

Getting enough sleep makes you feel rested and full, and will keep you from unnecessary snacking. Plus, when you’re tired and hungry, that’s a double whammy and will just make you reach for a lot of carbs. Sleep early to avoid undue snacking.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO DIET FOREVER! Many people go through a back and forth process of gaining and losing weight… but you don’t have to be stuck in that plateau. These weight loss tips will keep you healthy and fit while losing weight in the long term.

1

EAT YOUR FAVORITE FOOD BUT ONLY IN SMALL PORTIONS

Yes, you heard us. You can eat your favorite food but keep it to a minimum. The key is moderation. Rather than starve yourself, you can trick your brain into thinking that you’re still eating chocolates, but keep it to one small piece instead of the whole bag.

2

ADD SPICE!

Adding spices or chillis to your food for a flavor boost can help you feel satisfied for longer. “Food that is loaded with flavor will stimulate your taste buds and can be more satisfying so you don’t eat as much,” according to the American Dietetic Association.

3

6

CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

But not with doughnuts or pizza. Instead, why don’t you buy yourself fresh flowers or a pair of shoes for losing five pounds? Treat yourself to a massage or get a trendy new haircut in the salon. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it can also be as simple as subscribing to Netflix!

7

DON’T SKIP MEALS

When you get too hungry, you just crave starch and carbohydrates. As a result, you just demolish anything that comes your way. To remedy this, have some nuts, hard-boiled eggs, and crackers or yoghurt on hand for when you feel peckish.

SWAP IT OUT!

Simply by eating less pasta or bread and more veggies, you could lose a dress or pant size in a year. You can save 100200 calories if you reduce the portion of starch on your plate and increase the amount of vegetables. Hooray for broccoli!

MIND-BODY BALANCE

YOGA IS A SPORT THAT STRENGTHENS NOT ONLY THE BODY, BUT ALSO THE MIND. WANUNYA CRELLIN DEMONSTRATES THE MIND-CLEARING SERENITY OF YOGA.

HIGH LUNGE

Name in Sanskrit UTTITA ASHWA SANCHALANASANA This pose counteracts the effects of sitting all day by lengthening your hip flexors. It also aids in indigestion, constipation, and sciatica. It stretches the groin as well as the legs and arms. It also stretches the knees, ankles, and waist.

LORD OF THE DANCE POSE

TREE POSE

The name of this beautiful pose comes from the Sanskrit words “nata” meaning “dancer” and “raja” meaning “king”. It is one of the many names given to the Hindu god Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer. Natarasjana is usually performed as the final pose in a series of challenging backbends. It stretches the shoulders and chest, thighs, groin, and abdomen; and strengthens the legs and ankles. It also improves your balance.

This comes from the Sanskrit words “vriksa” meaning “tree” and “asana” meaning “posture”. The pose emphasizes alignment of the head, spine, and hips. It improves balance, poise, posture, concentration, and the range of motion in the hips. It also deepens the thorax, strengthens the ankles, and tones the muscles of the legs, back and chest.

WEIGHT LIFTING

Sometimes all it takes to change your perspective, develop discipline, and have a laser-like focus is lifting weights. Check out some of the interesting side-benefits of weightlifting. YOU’LL TRAIN YOUR FOCUS BECAUSE YOU’RE ALWAYS TRACKING YOUR PROGRESS

When it comes to transforming yourself physically, progress comes in small steps that its impact can only be felt after a long time. Because you’re tracking your baby steps, you become more focused on the big goal—the ultimate transformation.

YOU’LL BE OPTIMISTIC BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU GET WHAT YOU TRAIN FOR

A consistent weight lifting routine improves one’s ability to solve problems and challenges in any area of life—physically, financially, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Plus, you’ll feel better because you’re detoxifying, shaping, and strengthening your body.

IT INCREASES YOUR CONFIDENCE AND CHARISMA

How can you not be more confident when you are increasingly pumping more and more challenging weights?

Not only are you pushing your body, you are also becoming mentally stronger which leads you to be more charismatic.

IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER

When you’re strong, fit, and in shape, every physical activity in life becomes easier. Climbing stairs is simple, carrying heavy objects a breeze. By the time you get home at night, you don’t feel so exhausted that you have to waste yourself in front of the TV, because you’re too tired to move.

YOU WILL PUSH THROUGH YOUR FEAR It takes courage, commitment, and dedication to continue your training and take it to the next level. And the next, and the next, and the next. By doing so, you’re teaching yourself a very valuable lesson: fear is not in control,

you are in control.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF EVERY MAJOR LIFESTYLE DISEASE

Cut the risk of diabetes, stroke, heart attack and just about every other major disease. This is one of the most positive effects of having a healthy life in general and weightlifting in particular.

IT CAN CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH EXERCISE

For many people who don’t enjoy organized sports or typical “exercise” like walking, running, or aerobics, weight lifting is a type of fitness that they might engage in, and in fact even enjoy.

YOU’LL BE A BETTER PROBLEM-SOLVER

Because weightlifting makes you focus and push through fear, you will find that you will march up to each and every problem and face it and try to figure out the best possible way to deal with it.

DOVE MEN + CARE CLEAN COMFORT SOAP

DOLCE & GABBANA VELVET EXOTIC LEATHER

While the scale isn’t anyone’s favorite household accessory, you might actually be excited to step into this one. The grand thing about this scale is that it detects body fat percentage—an important stat to know, since our body composition of muscle to fat is indicative of our health. A lower body fat percentage (21 to 24 percent for fit women) leads to a higher metabolic rate and more muscle tone. This smarter scale definitely provides better results.

APPLE WATCH SPORT For those interested in getting quick-glance Smartphone notifications and tracking workouts and everyday activity, this is worth a look. It now has a new rose-gold Sport option (which would look good with the Lacoste Showcourt lace trainers, please see p. 80), plus an anodized aluminum case with a custom alloy that is 60 percent stronger than standard aluminum, but just as light. Just remember, you’ll need an iphone for it to work.

SCHWINN CYCLE NAV A GPS for bikes, the CycleNav mounts to the handlebars and relays turnby-turn directions (both audibly and by lighting up as a turn signal) from Schwinn’s phone app via Bluetooth. It even doubles as a headlight. This smartphone powered GPS navigator works with any Buetooth 4.0/Bluetooth Low Energy or Bluetooth Smart Ready Phone. It will provide you with visual and audio cues that will get you wherever you want to go.

APPS

APPS FOR REAL PEOPLE In the health and fitness craze, you’ve probably downloaded dozens of apps with the intent of becoming a marathoner or even to race in Ironman. Once the excitement wears away, you are left with the feeling of just wanting to be able to touch your toes. Here are some apps that will help you keep fit, stay calm, and get energized in a smart and sustainable way.

PEDOMETER++ It has been suggested by fitness professionals that you should walk at least 10,000 steps a day in order to maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle. Pedometer++ is an iOS app that basically uses your iphone to count how many steps you have taken in a day. It sounds pretty basic, but the upside is that there is a Pedometer++ widget for iOS meaning that at a glance, you can see how many steps you’ve taken and it will be color-coded to indicate how close you are to reaching your goals.

HEALTH & WELLNESS 82 | PowerUp | March 2016

CALM As an app, this one is fairly straightforward. It is a selection of soothing natural sounds like mountain lakes, babbling brooks, and crashing waves. There’s also guided meditation, if you want to be more uplifted. The next time you need a mental and aural break from your office table, punch up Calm. com—research says that even a 40-second nature break can improve your focus and accuracy during tedious, repetitive work.

SPRING MOVES FITOCRACY Fitocracy is for the competitive. The personal trainer lets you track workouts and encourages you to work toward real-life goals through a leveling system and in-game achievements you can share among your friends and the Fitocracy community.

Billed as a “rhythm-fueled music service and exercise tracker”, Spring Moves creates a library of playlists designed to match the music you love with your workout. By tracking your performance via GPS, it then keeps tracks of the songs that put a little extra pep in your step, and personalizes a playlist from your greatest hits. Now you can run and walk easier by matching your movement to the rhythm of the music. You can definitely increase your performance: run/ walk faster and farther with less effort. An added bonus, there are 50+ playlists and stations sorted by genre, artists and BPM with new music added weekly! www.powerup-mag.com
