BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. a policy are being explored. outcome ofan effective physical proven to actually raise IQ in teaching kids about managing help children to learn hard work, respond positively to setbacks helps a child to prepare to take HH Shaikh Nasser Bin offer and emerge victorious like part of the culture of the Gulf Hamad Al Khalifa riding and show jumping, value, although we must not sporting events that boast a

OBJECTIVES OF WAHO

To preserve, improve and maintain the purity of the blood of horses of the Arabian breed and to promote public interest in the science of the breeding of Arabian horses To promote and facilitate the acquisition and distribution of the knowledge in all Countries of the history, care and treatment of horses of the Arabian breed To advise and co-ordinate the policies and activities of Members of the Organization To co-operate with any person or body of persons domiciled throughout the world in an endeavour to promote uniformity in terminology, definitions and procedures relative to the breed of Arabian horses To act in a consultative capacity in discussion and negotiation with International, National and other authorities on matters concerning horses of the Arabian breed

ARABIAN HORSE PROFILE

The Arabian horse has had a strong presence throughout much of recorded history, with rulers, nomads, and prophets all proclaiming their admiration for the breed. Theorized to be the oldest breed in the world, Arabians were constant companions of the first documented breeders of the Arabian horse. The Arabian horse thrived in near isolation and are known for their sociable personalities. Today, the Arabian’s beauty, confirmation and history still inspire horsemen all over the world. In the Kingdom of Bahrain, a unique collection of pure-bred Arabian horses has been preserved for over 200 years by

the rulers of Bahrain, the Al Khalifa family, and most recently by the King, His Majesty, Shaikh Hamad Bin Isa al Khalifa. In 1983, the then Crown Prince relocated the stud to its present site at Rowtha’t Alghar to ensure the protection and careful supervision of the breeding program. The stud presently consists of 312 registered horses, 20 of which are stud stallions

Arab Emirates to repeat last year’s win. In men’s, last year’s runner-up Josh Amberger (AUS) was back to Dubai and faced a top field including five-time ITU Olympic-distance champion Javier Gomez (ESP). What united all the athletes was the course they tackled: A 1,9 km swim course starting at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, a one-loop 90,1 km bike course and a 21,1 km run course along Jumeirah beach. Daniela Ryf and Javier Gomez were the winners of the Ironman 70.3 in Dubai. Gomez came to the finish line after 3:42:21 hours ahead of Josh Amberger (3:44:38) and Ruedi Wild (3:44:59), Ryf had a time of 4:01:40 hours at the end. For Javier Gomez, a catch-up was successful. Behind Josh Amberger, Gomez had taken second place after the swim, but he lost time. A trio came from the quintet to the wheel goal. Butterfield was the first to change before Amberger and Jensen, 2:54 minutes behind, Javier Gomez switched to ninth on the track and the catch-up began. After 14 kilometers, the Spaniard had arrived at the front and had replaced Amberger as a top rider. The Australian could not keep up with the pace of Gomez, however, and finished second with 21 seconds just

before Ruedi Wild. Wild after Gomez was the second fastest runner and was able to race on the podium. Christian Kramer was the best German competitor in the competition. Daniela Ryf was already in good form at the start of the season but the competition was also good. With Kimberley Morrison and Ellie Salthouse, two starters of the Swiss Ryf were close on their heels. But only Morrison could keep up with Ryf to the wheel goal. The Briton was the first to leave the change zone, but then Daniela Ryf took the lead again and continued to expand. Morrison fell back to rank eight and Ryf won their first race in the new season after 4:01:40 hours. Ellie Salthouse (4:04:05) and Sarah Crowley (4:06:23) finished second and third respectivelyLaura Philipp was in the top ten for the entire race and came to 4:12:31 as a ninth and therefore the best German. Mareen Houfe followed on 13th with a time of 4:21:56 hours. Meanwhile, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, out of 1800 competitors, Shaikh Nasser topped the the GCC participants list, after grabbing an impressive fifth place overall and setting a new record of four hours and fifteen minutes.

SARA GROSS, PhD

2x Ironman Champion Head Coach - Mercury Rising Triathlon Bahrain Endurance 13 Team Ambassador

IMPROVING YOUR TRIATHLON SWIM

THE TWO-TIME IRONMAN WINNER, FORMER NORTH AMERICAN IRONMAN CHAMPION AND EUROPEAN LONG COURSE TRIATHLON CHAMPION, SARA GROSS, ADMIT TED THAT WHEN IT COMES TO SWIMMING, SHE WAS NOT A NATURAL. BUT THROUGH YEARS OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE, SHE TREMENDOUSLY IMPROVED HER SWIMMING SKILLS. READ ALONG AS SHE SHARES HER EXPERTISE PROVIDING SOME OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE ASPIRING TRIATHLETES.

Be patient with yourself when it comes to swimming. Technique may not change overnight. It may take years, it will feel awkward and you will wonder if anything is really changing at all. Work hard consistently and have faith in the process, and like most things, the changes will come. There are some great swimming events popping up in Bahrain that can help everyone improve their confidence in the open water. Check out ‘Boost Bahrain’ on Facebook for the latest events.

O

ne of my best triathlon swims was at IRONMAN Canada in 2009. I swam 53.27 for 3800 meters. It was the 4th fastest women's time, and 38th fastest overall and it demonstrated a marked improvement in my swimming. At the time, I reflected on where I came from when I started my triathlon journey and my progress in the pool, lake and open ocean. Then, and now, I attribute my increased speed (in 2005, I swam 1.01.23 at the same race) to two factors:

HAVE THE PATIENCE TO LEARN PROPER TECHNIQUE

During my early years as a triathlete, I had a coach who worked hard on technical changes. It took three years before I even made significant and permanent changes to my swim technique. For three years, my coach tried every trick in the book to effect change in my stroke. I could remember swimming endless hours with a band tied around

my ankles, or weights attached to my wrists, or various contraptions strapped around my hips. I remembered one day in Spain when my eternally patient coach took a saw to a plastic crate in order to make hand paddles in exactly the right shape that he felt I required. Then one fall day in 2004, we spent four to five hours swimming together. In those days, our video equipment was anything but state-of-the art. His little handheld camera had a waterproof case and he held the contraption just below surface level as I swam. Then I got out of the pool, and we went into the next room to watch the footage on an old-fashioned VCR. After that, I would jump back in the water, would try some changes (that invariably felt awkward and weird), videotaped it again and repeated the process. By the end of the day I was a prune, but I still considered that to be the day that I learned how to swim properly. The following spring, I started racing consistently with the main group of professional women. My swim was no longer a weakness.

TRAIN HARD

Gone are the days when the swim is not important in triathlon. In 2008, I increased my swim volume and intensity. That year, I swam 25 km a week and swam hard more often than not. When I used to train with IRONMAN World Champion, Faris Al Sultan, he told me “you need to swim harder” and I finally took this advice. My coach put together a great swim program and I followed it to the letter. The other thing I changed was that I started swimming with a group. With a handful of swimmers in the pool who were faster than me, and another handful who are about the same. In this way, not only was I able to be in good company but I was pushed out of my comfort zone. This final change really put the meat on the bones of the swim stroke that my old coach and I perfected together those years ago. No amount of technique work could replace hard work and a smart training program.

CYCLING

I AM HONOURED TO BE REPRESENTING BAHRAIN - MIKEL CALAHORRA

EXPLORING THE ICE DESERT E X T R EM E FAT BIK E C OMP ET IT ION

Imagine yourself in this scenario: snow in Quebec Canada, with the temperature of -35°c, the frozen lake saint jean, on a fatbike… One athlete, with the immense desire to conquer snow and sand on two wheels, has taken the challenge training from a very hot place covered with sand and racing to a very cold place covered with ice. An event only for the toughest athletes in the world.

F

at bike racing is the new kid on the block gaining recognition. Fat bikes have been around for about a decade and, in the last few years, have captured the imagination of the cycling mainstream because of their versatility in Winter snow conditions. Mikel Calahorra was one of the 120 participants from around the world who participated in this unique and extreme event consisting on crossing with a Fat Bike a frozen lake. The first and only representative from Bahrain and the Middle East cycled 37 km over the ice, faced snow storms and fought strong winds under the coldest temperatures in the world crossing the Lake Saint Jean.

THE ICE DESERT

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region has a territory of 107,000 square

26

kilometres making it the 3rd largest region in Quebec. Saguenay is located in the heart of the region, which includes the boroughs of La Baie, Chicoutimi and Jonquière for a combined population of 148,900. Saguenay’s fjord is one of longest in the world. With 42 kilometers of beautiful sandy beaches, the third and final sector is a genuine Zen oasis: LacSaint-Jean. Lac Saint-Jean is the largest inhabited lake in Quebec.

TRAINING

Fat bikes are a special type of mountain bikes designed to ride in very difficult terrains such as sand and snow. The size and thickness of the wheels are bigger and wider than usual bikes to assure the grip and control needed on thesekinds of surfaces. For this event, Mikel rode Rocky Mountain Bikes, and had been training in the Bahraini dessert.

“WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HAVE A RIDER REPRESENTING BAHRAIN IN SUCH A UNIQUE EVENT.” -SHAIKH KHALID BIN HAMAD AL KHALIFA “Feeling of riding on snow comparing to sand are very similar, which gave me great preparation for the event,” said Mikel Calahorra

ONE ON ONE WITH ICE DESERT CONQUEROR

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THIS UNIQUE RACE?

It was the organization of the event who contacted me to join. They were looking for good athlete/cyclist from the Middle East region to join this exclusive. It was the perfect time as I was starting the season and this kind of races and trainings gave me good power and training for the bike.

HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING THE ONLY AND THE FIRST PARTIPANT IN THE MIDDLE EAST ? There was no pressure. I am honoured to be representing Bahrain, but I must admit I was nervous before the race as the conditions I’d face were not at all what I was used to. I knew it was going to be a challenge to be racing in -30C.

“This challenge showed me that, no matter how fit and strong you are physically and mentally, you have to respect the nature and his strength.” with a layer of ice. The start was fast and furious, local cyclist use to the adverse conditions wanted to do the brake since the beginning. Mikel Calahorra was sitting in a pack from 10th to 15th place and catching up as he got use to the driving. In between 18 to 21 km mark, frozen rain started and things got very complicated. Visibility was very limited, the rain started to freeze over the cyclists covering the track. At that point, the locals were able to do a big difference with the internationals. They went through the conditions as nothing was happening. Meanwhile, Mikel’s glasses got covered with a thick layer of ice that didn’t allow seeing, track was slippery and with hard icy footprints of snow motorbikes and bikes that make him crash several times. Despite the challenges, Mikel Calahorra once again proved that Bahrain athletes are world class finishing in 1h 58 min ending in a respectable 31st position.

STATEMENTS OF SUPPORT

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s vision of promoting healthy

lifestyle and encouraging Bahrainis to join the sports, has brought the attention of the world to Bahrain. It became more common to see Bahraini representatives racing around the world in unique competitions and destinations achieving great results. Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, president of the Bahrain cycling association, has stated his support regarding the participation of the Bahrain representative: “We are delighted to have a rider representing Bahrain in such a unique event. Although we don’t have similar conditions in Bahrain, the rider has brought the experience of such events to us. He has been training in sand and warm conditions yet we are confident that they can take on such an extreme race. We look forward to host fat bike sand races in the future as it gains more popularity. Cycling in Bahrain continues to grow whether it’s through the new pro team Bahrain-Merida, hosting of major event such as the Asian cycling championship, or participating in world championships and top events such as this participation by Mikel”.

WILL YOU JOIN AGAIN? Sure, the experience was amazing and unique. A very nice challenge that each year is completely different to the previous ones due to the weather conditions. The people of Lac Saint Jean also made me feel like home and I’m very thankful to them. WHAT DIFFERENT THINGS WOULD YOU DO NEXT TIME? The main thing is to learn more about different tires and tire pressures. They play a big role on these conditions. I honestly think that, after speaking to locals, if I would have lower the pressure of the tires when the frozen rain started, I’ll probably avoid many of the crashes I had. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THE EXPERIENCE? This challenge showed me that, no matter how fit and strong you are physically and mentally, you have to respect the nature and his strength. A deep knowledge of the conditions makes a huge difference on this race.I’ve to send a big thank you to Bilodeau Canada for providing me with the right clothing. Proper boots that kept my feet warm, handle bar covers that protected my hands from the ice cover and a jacket that was like a shield. Also to Rocky Mountain for providing me the bike properly set up for this challenge. Without these two key partners, I wouldn’t have been able to finish the Traversee du Lac Saint Jean a velo.

BORUT BOZIC : MAN OF THE CL AS SIC S Cycling has become a year-round affair featuring the most anticipated Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team. For many die-hard fans, this expansion into the Middle East specifically in the Kingdom of Bahrain, has garnered millions of followers worldwide. The Classics season has star ted and if you are a fan of those cobbles, it won’t be long before you see the name: Borut Bozic in the results. The Slovenian is Bahrain Merida’s man and we were lucky enough to have a chat about his big love!

I’M THE TYPE OF RIDER WHO CAN RACE VERY WELL IN ALL THE RACES IN BELGIUM.

M

arch is the return of Spring Classics. The unique collection of deeply entrenched and historic one-day races that span Northern Europe and that cut right to the core are what makes cycling such a remarkably special sport. They are definitely a part of cycling’s tradition that provide some of the most exciting and memorable moments in the sport’s history. Borut Bozic, a front-runner when it comes to Classics turned pro late in life, but he has not hung about since then. From the small Perutnina Ptuj team he moved to the Italian LPR team for a year before the call of the North took him first to Collstrop

and then Vacansoleil. With top results in Paris-Tours, the Etoile de Bessèges, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Tour of Belgium, Tour de Suisse and the Vuelta a España he moved up to the WorldTour with Astana. Now, he is a part of the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team.

THE CLASSICS

A Spring Classic is raced with intensity and every last rider finishes completely shattered. The Classics bring the potential of treacherous conditions and narrow battered roads. TIPS TO ROCK AND ROLL ON THE CLASSICS! PAVÉ POINTERS

Even if your local streets aren't cobbled, these tips will come in handy the next time you hit rough road.

POSITION YOURSELF

Keep your weight evenly distributed from front to back for maximum traction from both tires. If you're in a group, try to get to the front so you can pick your own line.

April and are some of the oldest races in the history of cycling. The Spring Classic seasons begins in Italy with the Milan-San Remo, usually held on the first Sunday in spring. The majority of the Spring Classics are raced in Belgium including the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders), La Fleche Wallonne, E3 Harelbeke with the Liège–Bastogne–Liège concluding the Spring Classics season. France’s Paris–Roubaix (Hell of the North) and The Netherlands’ Amstel Gold Race make up the other Spring Classic races.

BORUT AS A LEADER OF THE CLASSICS

“I’m the type of rider who can race very well in all the races in Belgium. I have won two or three stages in the Tour of Belgium and I did well in the Eneco Tour also. I like to race in all the races in the north, they suit me.” Borut explained. It is a fact that not all riders like to ride on the cobbles where the classics are very known. But Borut stated that even if it isn’t easy, he was able to be great at it after 2 years of intensive training and riding.

RACE OF FLANDERS

Flanders is known to be very difficult. The road is so difficult and the wind tends to change during the Tour and you never know what to expect. For this reason, it has been considered to be one of the incredible races. “Actually you must concentrate throughout the entire race in order to keep up” Borut explained.

BAHRAIN MERIDA TEAM

No doubt, Borut is having the best time with the team. They have got great chemistry not only on the roads but off roads as well. “We have been supporting each other. I felt that it’s a really good team even before we started racing. We are a very dedicated team. All the riders want to do their best. We have a good spirit. We motivate and understand each other plus we enjoy a lot!” says Borut. Though improvements are still on its way for the Bahrain Merida Team, Borut has no doubt that they will triumph over the upcoming World Tour Races.

“All the riders want to do their best. We have a good spirit. We motivate and understand each other plus we enjoy a lot”

The natural tendency is to hold your handlebar in a death grip. Instead, stay loose and let your bike do the work. During particularly brutal stretches, stay light on your saddle, like you're partially sitting on it.

BE SMOOTH

Keep your pedal stroke round and even to combat the natural jackhammer effect of a rough surface. Focus on pulling back with your heel each time the pedal comes around.

SOFTEN THE BLOWS

Aside from breaking out your favorite chamois and padded gloves, you can also tweak your bike setup to stay comfortable. If you're bound for lengthy sections of rough road, consider layering gel tape under your bar tape. Or try Specialized Roubaix tape. It's extra wide to smooth overlap ridges and reduce palm pressure. Pro riders typically use tubular tires on cobbles because they can run a lower pressure without fear of pinch-flatting. Even if you don't, keep your tires in the 80- to 90-psi range for better traction and a more supple ride.

ycling has certainly received the attention it requires which paved the way for the development of cycling pathway projects in the Kingdom. With around thirty countries and more than 500 participants, the Asian Road Cycling continues to grow and reflects the high standard of cycling in the continent. The future looks bright for cycling in Bahrain and in the region as it also previously hosted the inauguration of Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling team led by the ‘Shark’, Vincenzo Nibali. The Asian Riders Yukiya Arashiro from Japan, Chun Kai Feng from Taipei, and Meiyin Wang from China, joined this momentous occasion representing their own respective countries.

C

THE PAST

The first Asian Cycling Championships were held in Kuala Lumpur, Federation of Malaya (existing Malaysia)

in 1963. Since then, Asian Cycling championships were held around Asian countries every other year. Since Asian Cycling Championship 1989 held in New Delhi, India, the Asian Junior Cycling Championships were held as well in the same location at the same time. In 1973, the 6th Championships were held in Shuzenji-cho, Tagata-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture (existing Izu City), and in 1999, the 19th Championships were held at Maebashi City and Tsumagoi Village in Gunma Prefecture. Since the year of 2000, the Championships became an annual event. The 24th Championships were held at Yokkaichi-city, Mie Prefecture in 2004, and the 28th Championships were held at Nara City and Yamazoe Village in Nara Prefecture in 2008. From 2012, the Asia ParaCycling Championships become co-organized races.

INDIA AND BAHRAIN CO-HOSTED 2017 ASIAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

“THE SUCCESS REACHED FROM THIS EVENT WAS APPLAUDED BY MANY BEING AN INDICATION OF THE GROWTH OF CYCLING SUPPORTING THE KINGDOM’S ASIAN AMBITIONS.”

The capital cities of New Delhi and Manama jointly hosted the Asian Cycling Championships, following an earlier decision by the Asian Cycling Confederation to allow track and road cycling disciplines to be held separately. Though 41 member states make up the Asian Cycling Confederation, to date, only 12 countries have hosted the Championships – primarily due to the disparate emphasis on cycling infrastructure development across the continent. Between them, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and Korea have so far hosted more than half of all Championship events ever held. It is hoped the change in rules will permit Asian countries without velodromes to now consider putting their hands up to host road events in future. Bahrain is the first such country to avail itself of the new policy.

PROGRESS OF SPORTS AND ASIAN AMBITIONS

Bahrain’s hosting of the Asian Cycling Championship comes in line with the directives of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to support the progress of sports. The recent accomplishments have been achieved through Bahrain’s organisation and the backing of wise leadership. The success reached from this event was applauded by many being an indication of the growth of cycling supporting the Kingdom’s Asian ambitions.

BRINGING BAHRAIN TO THE WORLD! JUST UNDER THREE MONTHS INTO THE NEW YEAR, THE GROWTH, ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND FUTURE PLANS OF HIS HIGHNESS’S KHK MMA HAVE BEEN UNRIVALED IN THE MMA INDUSTRY. TALKING ABOUT THE FASTEST GROWING SPORTS IN THE WORLD, KHK MMA IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE FASTEST GROWING MMA BUSINESS COMPANY PERIOD.

T

he global waves this Bahraini brand has been sending throughout the world have shifted the international attention to what looks to most a small kingdom with a great leader! For those un-familiar with the nature of his highness Shaikh Khalid’s business model, it goes something between those lines “Take Bahrain to the world and bring the world to Bahrain“ . On March 18, 2017, after two successful events in the

Kingdom of Bahrain back in 2016, the KHK MMA product, going by the name of BRAVE Combat Federation, will have its first international event. The Bahraini based global mixed martial arts promotion will land in Curitiba, Brazil for its third installment Brave 3: Battle in Brazil. The main event for Brave 3 is going to be the long-awaited clash of rivals Lucas “Mineiro” Martins and Paulo “Bananada” Gonçalves.

THE FIGHTERS Lucas Martins has a

professional record of 18 wins and only three losses. Fighting out of São Paulo, Brazil, from the Chute Boxe – Diego Lima team, Lucas is currently in a three-win streak. Paulo Gonçalves is a longtime vet, with 33 professional fights, among which 22 ended up with the Rio de Janeiro based fighter victorious. Training at the famous X-Gym camp, alongside with none other than Anderson Silva, considered for many as the greatest Mixed Martial Artist of all time, Paulo won his last fight, in January, against

Nilson Pereira.

MMA HISTORY IN BRAZIL Throughout the history of mixed martial arts, Brazil has produced a number of star athletes. The birthplace of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Brazil unquestionably plays a major key role in the development of mixed martial arts and that’s where the importance of this move lies. The promotion takes no time off after Brazil, and heads back to the Middle East to starts its previously planned

invasion. With over 9 events planned for the region, Brave Combat Federation hits Abu Dhabi as a first stop. This event will be headlined by the promotion’s first title fight. Yes, a BRAVE CHAMPION will earn the belt in UAE! The fight card is also rumored to have some of the biggest MMA stars in the Middle E ast , all under one banner, Brave 4: Unstoppable. Fighters already announced for this card on Arabs MMA. com are Lebanon’s Mohamed Fakhreddine, one of the most famous and entertaining figures in the game today. Also taking part of this beautiful building list of fighters is Abduklareem Al Selwady who made eyes turn in his first appearance in the Brave cage.

BRINGING THE WORLD TO BAHRAIN THROUGH IMMAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Unlike KHK MMA, Shaikh Khalid’s vision is eagle strong and the team under his wings is unstoppable. From back to back events locally and

regionally on a professional level, it has been announced that the world will literally come to Bahrain. Earlier this month, it was announced that Bahrain will host to the 4th edition of the IMMAF world amateur championships. KHK MMA represented by its CEO Mohammed Shahid alongside IMMAF heads including President Kerrith Brown, CEO Densign White, have made this news official. The “IMMAF World Championship” is the world’s most prestigious amateur Mixed Martial Arts tournament, and 2017 will exceptionally mark the first time the event is conducted outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Bahrain will be the first Asian or Arab country to host an IMMAF World Championship, and indeed the first country to host the event outside of the USA. The announcement comes following the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation officially granting the Kingdom of Bahrain the right to host the 2017 IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA, which will be held later in November this year. This decision translates the

“I believe this year (2017) will mark the beginning of a long and fruitful journey to bring Brave Combat Federation to the rest of the world,” Mohamed Shahid Brave CF President efforts of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa to strengthen the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position in this sport, globally. KHK MMA CEO Mohammed Shahid seized the occasion to announce that Brave Combat Federation will be returning to Bahrain in November as part of its 2017 blockbuster schedule which includes among other targets Brazil, India, and the UAE. Mohammed Shahid revealed that the Brave CF promotion

is aiming for November 17th. Given that this coincides with the IMMAF Championships in Bahrain, the two events will be held as part of a fight week which promises to serve as the biggest week of MMA Action in the Middle East. Both of the IMMAF Championships and the Brave event will take place at Khalifa Sports City. To celebrate the IMMAF-Brave partnership, Mohammed Shahid guaranteed the greatest card Brave CF has ever put together. Whether you will be in Bahrain for the festivities or following from elsewhere around the world, you won’t want to miss a second of the action. A breakdown of each day of action this week, telling you when and where to attend, where to watch, what to look for and more will come in a follow-up announcement by KHK MMA. Teaming up with the IMMAF will be another example of KHK MMA’s ongoing commitment with amateur MMA athletes. This involvement with amateurs comes side to side with presenting the most elite professional fighting platform, building the nation’s MMA scene from the grass roots upwards. NOW THAT IS ROYAL!

ariam appeared in the office early morning-wearing skin-tight black jeans, a white top that suits her athletic figure, and killerheels, with a big backpack tucked under her arm. You can never really tell that she squeezed in this meeting despite her workload and trainings scheduled that day. She pulled out her clothes and gracefully slipped into her triathlete uniform all made up for her photo-shoot. Never content to merely keep up, Mariam Turki is simply owning it! She had her eyes focused on exactly what she wanted to do and SHE MADE IT HAPPEN.

“AS I APPROACHED THE FINISH LINE AND SAW THAT RED CARPET, ALL I THOUGHT OF WAS THAT AWESOME FINISH LINE PHOTO, SO I LIFTED MY ARMS HIGH AND REALISED THEN THAT I WOULD DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN”” 40

What she found a little bit difficult was the last 500 meter swim, “The current was against us, and the sun was right infront which made it difficult to see the buoys.” She explained. When asked about her trainings, she said that the funny thing was she hardly trained at all for IRONMAN Dubai. It was six weeks apart from the Bahrain race and was exhausted which took her a week to recover. After that, she started training again. Ironically, a week before the race she got the flu which made her stop training completely. Luckily, this did not stop her from finishing the race with flying colors.

FIRST OVERALL GCC FEMALE IRONMAN IN DUBAI

HOW IT ALL STARTED A mom of two beautiful children, she started her career on being a triathlete a year ago. It started with running only at first. When she had given birth to her second child, she wanted to lose a bit of weight and started on being active. She joined her Uncle Karim Turkis’ running group (Happy Team) and from there, she heard about triathlon and saw how everyone was training for it. This made her very interested and started doing it.

WHY SHE ROCKS People may be wondering how she managed to train and race successfully while holding down a full time job and as a mom. The key? Mariam loves doing it! “I love training so I make time for it, she explained. I would usually do it early in the morning before work because I work from 9 am to 5pm. I only have very limited time to see my kids at night, usually between 6-8 pm. I would also sometimes use my lunch hour to train or after I put my kids to sleep.”

DUBAI, TRAININGS AND STRUGGLES IN BETWEEN Dubai was an incredible experience for Mariam. She mentioned that seeing many people cheering made it more bearable.

Against all odds, the fierce but glamorous mom finished the world’s toughest one-day race. “As I turned the corner onto the final stretch of IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai, Mariam recalled, the roaring of the crowd and the thumping of the finish line music echoed down the road. Spectators high-fived me in the street while people waved flags from countries all around the world. As I approached the finish line and saw that red carpet, all I thought of was that awesome finish line photo, so I lifted my arms high and realised then that I would do this all over again”.

AN INSPIRATION TO WOMEN

Mariam Turki loves sharing her story because she desires to inspire all the Bahraini women around especially in the GCC. She views herself as a person who worked hard to accomplish her goals and ignored the “I cant’s” that crept up along her fitness journey. She doesn’t let anyone’s pre-conceived notions (including her own) tamper with her potential. She believes that people should not let fear be an obstacle. There is nothing to be afraid of, and you would actually be surprised how much your body and mind can achieve. There are many encouraging people in this sport who will help you get there.

WHAT’S NEXT Mariam will try to join the local races in the coming months organised by the Bahrain road runners and the BTA and will focus on the World Championship in September.

BE O T HOW IC TRI P A N E OM M LOVE YOURSELF! WHEN YOU DO, YOU WILL REALIZE THAT YOU DESERVE THAT 1 HOUR A DAY TO DEDICATE TO YOURSELF AND YOUR SPORT. IT ’S NOT ABOUT THE QUANTITY OF HOURS THAT YOU SPEND WITH YOUR KIDS, WHAT MAT TERS MOST IS THE QUALITY. WHEN YOU GIVE YOURSELF THAT TIME, THEN YOU BECOME HAPPIER AND MORE EFFICIENT WITH YOUR FAMILY WAKE UP AN HOUR EARLIER. IN THIS WAY, YOU GET TIME TO TRAIN IN THE MORNING BEFORE WORK. STAY HEALTHY AND FIT NOT ONLY FOR YOURSELF BUT ALSO TO BE A LEADING EX AMPLE TO YOUR CHILDREN TO SHOW THEM WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO BE BLOCK YOUR WORKOUT TIME. PUT IT IN YOUR CALENDAR AS AN APPOINTMENT SO IT WILL GIVE YOU THE FEELING THAT YOU CAN’ T MISS AN APPOINTMENT BUT IN THIS CASE, YOU CAN’ T MISS YOUR WORKOUT! SPORTS & BEYOND

THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL YOU CAN SCORE A POINT IN MANY DIFFERENT SPORTS AND FEEL RATHER GOOD ABOUT IT, BUT WHEN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM SCORES A GOAL, THE WHOLE NATION ERUPTS!

FACT Football is our national sport, and during a game, you’d find different sportsmen cheering on the stands. For all other sports’ stake in Bahrain, we all need football to succeed, because its success is directly related to the success of all other sports.

THE TALK OF THE TOWN TODAY Why is Football in the Kingdom not improving and moving forward to become internationally competitive? Why are we here in Bahrain suffering so much with our national sport, the pride of nations, and the sport where a single goal would change a whole country’s mood? Einstein once said: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” Believe it or

not, the answer to football’s problems is very simple. I’ve been tasked recently in the Ministry of Youth and Sport Affairs to chair a committee to study all the sport clubs and youth centers in Bahrain to find the best one out of them to present them with an excellence award. Throughout the committee’s search, we consider a significant variable called LTAD program, Long Term Athletic Development Program. Because of the way competition locally and regionally is designed, we aim for quick wins, and quick wins absolutely destroy the foundation. Money is spent heavily at the top, while almost completely ignoring the foundation. Yes, it is true that we want to do well in this upcoming competition, whatever and wherever it may be, but the difficult decision is

always the better one, which is to accept the fact that we cannot do well today, and must think wisely about our investments. It sounds easy to you all, but decision makers in sports, like myself in Triathlon, find it very difficult to become the public opinion’s worse enemy and decided to ignore doing relatively good in competitions for a while. We either spend so much into trying to secure something today, and thus become champions of public opinion, or otherwise. The thing with LTAD is that it teaches you first to focus on skills for the young, with only minimum competition. It considers biological age as well and not only “age” because kids’ physical biology varies while they grow up. While growing up, LTAD starts focusing less on skill and balance it more with competition. Today, what I see is almost a reversal of this developmental program. A the moment, we do not have the resources to do both: invest at the top, and focus on the foundation. For football, the problem is much worse, because there is not enough investment for the top, and barely any attention to the foundation. We need to make the difficult decision by planning long term and accepting the fact they we may not score any goals in football for the next 8-10 years. We need to educate the public opinion about that old saying: “patience is virtue”, because if planning for Football works, then planning for all other sports will modestly follow.

MOTORING

TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME LOOKING TO HOP ON AND SET OUT FOR A LONG RIDE? THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE PLANNING A TRIP, MEETING UP WITH SOME FRIENDS AND TAKING A RIDE TO A FUN DESTINATION WITH YOUR MOTORCYCLE WHERE YOU RELISH THE LAND OF JOY, FREEDOM AND SELF-EXPRESSION. GET THAT ADVENTUROUS SIDE BACK IN YOU!

A

contemporary bike that expresses the pure essence of motorcycling matches your thirst for spontaneity. Tried and tested materials such as the aluminium of the rear swingarm and engine covers and the steel of the teardrop tank and frame are combined with new-generation components such as front and rear LED lighting and LCD instruments. Wide handlebars and a long seat provide a comfortable, relaxed riding position and, together with the low weight, low centre of gravity and slightly knobby tyres, ensure pure riding fun whatever the situation. “Post-heritage” design gives a contemporary take on the iconic bike built by Ducati back in the 70s. This Scrambler, though, is not

56

POWERUP | MARCH 2017

a retro bike: it is, rather, intended to be just how the legendary motorcycle would be today if Ducati had never stopped building it. The Icon version, in yellow and red, is joined by three others - Urban Enduro, Full Throttle and Classic - each offering its

“DUCATI SCRAMBLER ISN’T JUST A BIKE, IT’S A WORLD. ” own style and performancerelated interpretation of the Scrambler spirit. The Urban Enduro, with its “Wild Green” paintjob, is for enduro style enthusiasts and ready to switch from city streets to

country backroads in an instant. The Full Throttle is for riders enthralled by the flat-track racing world who have a penchant for pushing things to the limit. And the Classic is for devotees to details and a 1970s look who want the uncompromising riding pleasure and comfort of a modern-day bike. It offers a virtually unlimited range of exclusive personalization and lifestyle options. The Scrambler name has much in common with the verb to scramble - mixing up, blending, letting the imagination run free, sharing with others. Ducati Scrambler, the two-wheeled alter ego of those who ride it, is a cultural movement in and of itself. It’s free-spirited, positive and anti-conformist, open to encounters with other philosophies and styles.

The sense of freedom feels complete on two wheels, and riding doesn’t transport you to a destination; it is the destination.

MOTORING

IT ’S ENERGETIC, IT ’S LOUD, AND IT ’S EXHILARATING! THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE ANTICIPATION AS BAHRAIN MOTOCROSS 2017 IS ALREADY SET TO BE A GOOD ONE.

58

POWERUP | MARCH 2017

MOTORING

M

Motocross is a form of off-road motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. You can enter motocross world either with a dirt bike “two wheel” or ATV “four wheeler”. The track is located at BIC Bahrain International circuit, a track full of adventure with sharp turns and big jumps made out ofsand.

Motocross racing takes concentration and lots of it. Your mind is in “strategic think mode” all the time as you must plan for the current move while thinking about the next move down the track.

MOTORING

BACKTRACK

In 1924, the first known British off-road event known as the Scrambles was held at Camberley in Surrey. This would become the earliest known origin of freestyle motocross as we know it today. Over the years, the event evolved, largely through the efforts of riders from Europe who shortened the tracks while adding laps and various obstacles. Bahrain motocross started the first championships back in 2005. The track was located at Saar which in turn called the “BRR Saar”. It was the first international race held in Bahrain and riders across Middle East attended the said competition. The events were created by Essa Al-Awadhi, a Bahrain club manager and organized by BMC “Bahrain Motorcycle Club”. Yousif Karimi was the Dirt Bike rider champion at the Bahraini motocross championships in 2005. In 2009, the new track was built and a new category was

60

POWERUP | MARCH 2017

added which was the ATV“4 wheeler”. The ATV champion was awarded to FayadAhmed.

THE RIDERS

Motocross riding in and of itself is demanding on so many levels. Anyone who participates in the sport of motocross riding already knows, first-hand, the physical and mental drain on the body. Those contemplating getting involved with motocross riding should know what’s in store and plan accordingly. The sport is definitely for the physically and mentally fit, meaning, body mass, muscle tone and strength, along with a positive frame of mind need to be in tip-top shape. The ability to be flexible, versatile and move as quickly as a cat when it’s called for is also part of the “must have” package in order to handle everything thrown at you on the track. The body is its own “lean, mean machine” and must be super fit to endure the rigors of the track. This includes the strength and stamina to

MOTORING

maneuver a 200+ pound piece of machinery with precision around the track using every muscle from head to toe. The flip side of the coin is all about your mental state of mind. Riding motocross takes concentration and lots of it. Your mind is in “strategic think mode” all the time as you must plan for the current move while thinking about the next move down the track. It’s much the same as if you were playing in an intense game of high stakes chess where the wrong move means your competition will take home the prize.

Anyone who participates in the sport of motocross racing already knows, firsthand, the physical and mental drain on the body.

BAHRAIN MOTOCROSS TODAY

The new trackis located at BIC where the International track riders are racing today. The track was built by the champion of Bahrain,Yousif Karimi and champion of UAE, Mohammed Albalooshi. The track is known as the best tracks of Middle East where all the riders from the region revel in. This sport is one of a kind. Although a dangerous sport, the riders are fearless. Between the easy to ride bikes and the unintimidating tracks. It seems that there are more riders than ever who are “going to be a pro” and hanging it out beyond their ability to go fast. Each rider has his own style, some riders are very aggressive, and some riders are cool who ride with high techniques. Motocross has many categories which are the club man “beginners”, MX2 “250cc”, MX ”450cc” and ATV “4 wheelers”. This sport is open to anyone who wants to join. Each rider will be in his category once they agreed with the rules of FIA, they are all set to practice and race. In this season 2016-2017, there are five rounds and four were already completed. One left to go! The race will be on 17h of March 2017.

KIDNEY HEALTH FOR ALL THE WORLD IS CELEBRATING THE HEALTHY KIDNEY FOR ALL THIS MARCH WHICH IS AN ANNUAL EVENT TO PROVIDE A GLOBAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AIMED AT RAISING AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR KIDNEYS.

T

he first celebration of this day was in 2006 and is being one of the most successful efforts in increasing the level of awareness about kidney diseases for the community and for the health policy maker with eager people and creative ideas in celebration each year to support an this noble mission.

The celebration of the World Kidney Day was launched to emphasize the importance of spreading the knowledge about ways to prevent kidney diseases to slow the increasing incidence of this non communicable disease. Chronic kidney disease is one of the major complications of kidney disease that can affect one in every ten adult world wide with varying degree

of severity and presence of absence of complications Most of the people do not know the fact that anyone could have a form of kidney disease regardless of the age and the presence of an existing medical problem or not. Dr Basel Al Hayki, Consultant Nephrology and Renal Transplant, takes an active role by sharing tips and guidelines on how to treat our kidneys right!

KIDNEY DISEASE AND OBESITY

In 2014, over 600 million adults were obese worldwide. Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. It’s very well known that obesity is linked to several medical conditions like Blood sugar and high blood pressure , heart disease, high cholesterol ,various cancers, mental disorders and poor quality of life. However, POWERUP | MARCH 2017

63

W O R L D K I D N E Y D AY

many do not know that obesity by itself without any other medical condition can damage our kidney. The excessive weight represent a big burden to our kidney as our kidney work 24 hours a day to remove waste products from our body. Obese people are at high risk for losing their kidney function developing kidney disease. The good news is that we

BE ON THE MOVE!

Keeping fit helps to reduce your blood pressure and therefore reduces the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease.

CONTROL YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL

About half of people who have diabetes develop kidney damage. It is important for people with diabetes to have regular tests to check their kidney functions.

MONITOR YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

Although many people may be aware that high blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack, few know that it is also the most common cause of kidney damage. High blood pressure is

64

POWERUP | MARCH 2017

can prevent all of this by spreading the knowledge about the importance of changing our life style including eating healthy and exercise. In this year, let us all work to take simple measure that can change the life and health of many people at risk and let us all work together prevent kidney disease.

“START THE DAY WITH A GLASS OF WATER ”

YOU CAN’T BEAT A HEALTHY KIDNEY

especially likely to cause kidney damage when associated with other factors like diabetes, high cholesterol and Cardio- Vascular Diseases.

EAT HEALTHY

This can help prevent diabetes, heart disease and other conditions associated with Chronic Kidney Disease. Reduce your salt intake. The recommended sodium intake is 5-6 grams of salt per day (around a teaspoon). In order to reduce your salt intake, try and limit the amount of processed and restaurant food and do not add salt to food.

MAINTAIN YOUR FLUID INTAKE

Maintain a good health by drinking 1.5 to 2 litres (3 to 4 pints) of water per day. Consuming plenty of fluid helps the

kidneys clear sodium, urea and toxins from the body which, in turn, results in a “significantly lower risk” of developing chronic kidney disease, according to researchers in Australia and Canada.

DO NOT SMOKE

Smoking slows the flow of blood to the kidneys. When less blood reaches the kidneys, it impairs their ability to function properly. Smoking also increases the risk of kidney cancer by about 50 percent.

AVOID TAKING OVER-THECOUNTER PILLS ON A REGULAR BASIS

Common drugs such nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen are

known to cause kidney damage and disease if taken regularly. Such medications probably do not pose significant danger if your kidneys are relatively healthy and you use them for emergencies only, but if you are dealing with chronic pain, such as arthritis or back pain, work with your doctor to find a way to control your pain without putting your kidneys at risk.

GET REGULAR KIDNEY FUNCTION TESTS IF YOU HAVE ONE OR MORE OF THE ‘HIGH RISK’ FACTORS: DIABETES HYPERTENSION OBESITY

OSTEOPATHY

EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO A DAY AT WORK THAT JUST STARTS OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT. STRESS IMPACTS EVERYONE DIFFERENTLY, AND SUBSEQUENTLY, THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL METHOD OF HANDLING IT. HOWEVER, THERE ARE A FEW DIFFERENT METHODS MANY PROFESSIONALS RECOMMEND FOR HANDLING STRESS. LET ’S HEAR AN EXPERT ON HOW TO MANAGE STRESS LIKE A BOSS WITH OSTEOPATHY.

ROLE OF OSTEOPATHY IN STRESS MANAGEMENT Many people these days are suffering from ‘stress’. This manifests itself differently in different people. Some people may be angry, some down or depressed and many will have physical symptoms. Aching in the back, neck or shoulders Pain in the jaw Headaches Stomach ache or indigestion Inability to relax or sleep

NOW OPEN IN ELMERCADO MALL JANABIA

These physical symptoms can cause you to feel quite unwell which in turn exacerbates the stress response, this then causes an increase in tension and so a vicious cycle is set up. Osteopathy helps the body to heal and regulate itself by removing any barriers to recovery and encouraging a rebalancing of the internal environment via external manipulation. We work directly on the symptomatic areas using a range of techniques to help reduce muscle tension and soreness, and restrictions within the body’s systems. There are

exercises that can be done at home to help maintain the body’s equilibrium and manage the physical effects of stress. One of the most effective ways to relieve the effects is to visit an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner. Their hands-on approach will determine where the issues are coming from and work to correct the source of the problem, as opposed to just treating the symptoms. To learn more about how your lifestyle may be affecting your health, inside and out, book a consultation with an Osteopath today.

Consultant Osteopath German Orthopedic Hospital

BENEFITS OF OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT

Osteopaths respect the body's natural ability as a self-regulating mechanism and only intervene when pain or discomfort is present. The benefits of osteopathy are the general improvement in mobility and structural stability of the body.

Removes the underlying cause of pain

Reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints Increases range of motions in the joints Treats spinal problems resulting from poor posture or spinal disk injuries

Relieves chronic pain through noninvasive treatment Decreases the stress on the joints Reduces tension in the body Relieves tension headaches and migraine headaches

Helps the body to adapt to hormonal and structural changes during pregnancy Reduces scars and adhesions Treats trauma resulting from accidents (Sport injuries, Motor vehicle injuries)

Encourages the body to heal itself Increase circulation Reduces blood pressure For more information: +973 1723 9988.

To take utmost care for early detection, regular supervised medication and follow up until completely cured from the disease should be observed. We are fortunate enough to live in this era of rapid urbanization where the newer diagnostic modalities are getting better and better to counter such diseases. Our scientific approach is becoming deeper into the molecular level making us prognostically and diagnostically equipped. WHO (World health organization) aims to bring awareness to all the World including medical and nonmedical sub groups to come together and join hands to fight and contain this dreadful community infection for a better healthy disease free living.

STOP

uberculosis is one of the world’s most widespread and dreaded diseases. Mycobacterium Tuberculosis is the organism that causes tuberculosis infection and disease infecting 1/3 of the world’s population. In 2013, there were 9 million new cases reported worldwide with 1.5 million people dying from the disease. TB is more common in people who are malnourished, homeless, overcrowded and those living in substandard houses. There is increased occurrence of TB among HIV positive patients and all those who have comorbid diseases like diabetes, chronic steroids drug usage and immunosuppressant individuals. TB is transmitted through airborn droplet organisms causing (Primary Tubercolosis) which is clinically and radiologically silent. The term ‘Latent Tubercolosis’ infection is not an active form and cannot be transmitted to others. Active TB will develop in approximately 6% patients with latent disease if preventive treatment is not given, hence detecting

latent infection is the biggest challenge to the physician and community health workers. Ninety per cent of the adult patients usually present with activation of latent disease. However, large number of cases have been noticed to have ‘Drug Resistance’ both to primary and secondary drug regime know as ‘Multi Drug Resistance and ‘Extensive Multi Drug Resistance’ tuberculosis worldwide. Furthermore, TB has become a global burden. Each country has formulated various screening and surveillance program for early detection and treatment. We in the Kingdom of Bahrain are fortunate to have a special infection control department who are diligently working round the clock in various Government Health centers (MOH). Nearly half of the population being expats who have come from developing countries have a thorough pre-employment screening program for early detection and treatment. The disease per-se can be fully treated if detected early and full duration of therapy religiously followed, it should be kept in mind

We in the Kingdom of Bahrain are fortunate to have special infection control department who are diligently working round the clock in various Government Health Centers that ‘non-compliance’ is one of the important reasons of drug failure, drug resistance which make the disease more difficult to cure and increases the mortality.

KEEP YOUR LUNGS HEALTHY

1

DON'T SMOKE

Over time cigarette smoke destroys lung tissue, and may trigger changes that grow into cancer. If you smoke, it's never too late to benefit from quitting.

AVOID EXPOSURE TO POLLUTANTS THAT CAN DAMAGE YOUR LUNGS

2

Second-hand smoke, outdoor air pollution, chemicals in the home and workplace, and radon all

can cause or worsen lung disease. Make your home and car smoke-free.

3

PREVENT INFECTION

4

GET REGULAR HEALTHCARE

A cold or other respiratory infection can sometimes become very serious. Make it a habit to wash your hands often with soap and water to prevent spreading certain viruses.

5

EXERCISE

Aerobic exercise helps improve your lung capacity. Exercise and breathing techniques are also great for improving your mood and helping you relax.

During a check-up, your healthcare provider will listen to your breathing and listen to your concerns. POWERUP | MARCH 2017

BEAT YOUR LONG TERM BATTLE WITH HEEL PAIN

DR. RASHID H (P.T.)

Director/Senior Physical Therapist Rashid Center for Physical Therapy

PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night enduring a nasty pain at the bottom of your foot where the first few steps felt really sore then eases up after a shor t time? On some days it’s severe enough to prevent you from going to work, and yet other days you feel like it has completely resolved. I bet you even consulted Dr. Google about it.

ACHILLES TENDON

PLANTAR FASCIA

CALCANEUS HEEL SPUR

P

lantar fasciitis sufferers feel a sharp stab or deep ache in the middle of the heel or along the arch of the foot. Another sign of the condition is the morning hobble from the foot trying to heal itself in a contracted position overnight. Taking that first step causes sudden strain on the bottom of the foot, resulting in heel pain or pain in the arch. The pain can recur after long spells of sitting, but it tends to fade during a run, once the area is warmed up.

COMMON CAUSES Plantar fasciitis-related heel pain tends to strike those who over train, neglect to stretch their calf muscles, or overdo hill work and speed work. The condition of plantar fasciitis can also be caused by biomechanical flaws, including flat, feet with high arches and a tight Achilles tendon; excessive pronation; sudden increases in training mileage; beginning speedwork; wearing worn running shoes; running on hard surfaces, like asphalt or concrete; or a woman wearing high heels all day before switching into flat running shoes.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT Plantar fasciitis can be a nagging problem, which gets worse and more difficult to treat the longer it’s present. To prevent plantar fasciitis, run on soft surfaces, keep mileage increases to less than 10 percent per week, and wear the proper shoes for your foot type and gait. The running shoe that you wear should have plenty of arch

70

POWERUP | MARCH 2017

TIPS support. In fact, this is so important that some running shoe retailers market a specific plantar fasciitis shoe. It’s also important to stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. As the first step in treatment of the condition, massage (roll a golf ball under your foot) and apply ice (roll a frozen bottle of water under your foot). What shoe you wear on your feet when you’re not running makes a difference. Arch support is the key and walking around barefoot or in a flimsy shoe can delay recovery. If pain is present for more than three weeks, see a sports physical therapist about the problem. Treatment options we use in clinic include custom orthotics, proper footwear advice , foot taping, night splints, and antiinflammatories, which decrease symptoms significantly in about 95 percent of sufferers within six weeks. For more stubborn cases like six months of chronic plantar fasciitis may benefit from shock-wave therapy, an FDA-approved plantar-fasciitis treatment.
