BAHRAIN AND SPORTS

Influencing the GCC and the World

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome ofan effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond

positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

April has seen some fantastic accolades achieved by Bahraini sports personalities. Without question, the achievement of the Bahrain Endurance 13 team under the guidance of HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa in South Africa was second to none. We congratulate HH for his outstanding achievement in placing 8th in IRONMAN South Africa. Equally as impressive was the way HH launched the newly formed Bahrain Cycling team by wearing the team’s colors. We look forward to many more podium finishes around the world by this elite group of athletes.

On the topic of exciting events, HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa stepped into the ring for his inaugural fight and completely bowled everyone over with a knock-out in 11 seconds! Yes, 11 seconds people! Twitter and Instagram were abuzz with this amazing win and the PowerUp team was there to witness, some would say, an unevenly matched fight with his Indian challenger, who was at the top end of the welterweight and already a seasoned fighter. HH Shk. Khalid delivered a controlled, focused display of aggression that did not lack pizzazz! Well done to both teams and well-done to HH for an astounding fight!

FITNESS ESSENTIALS

You don’t have to spend to lose weight.

On that note, we applaud the triumphant exhibition of fitness at the recently concluded Bahrain Battle of Heroes under the leadership of His Excellency Shaikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa. 90 athletes from different crossfit boxes in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other parts of the world, took part in the games. The winners were awarded their trophies and cash prizes by HH Shk. Nasser himself! What makes this exhibition completely sensational is the fact that it was held in a shopping mall so more people can be inspired to get fit. We are glad to be at the forefront of major sporting events and always look forward to the synergy and goodwill that is inherent in sports. Hope this month marks the continuation of a healthy and active year for all of us.

BAHRAIN SPARTAN RACE

#GOT WHAT IT TAKES The inaugural event of the XDubai Spartan Race in Bahrain was expectedly massive. The outpour of people, the obstacles they faced, and the support of spectators, friends, and sponsors made for one very colorful event.

PowerUp obstacle on the Spartan Race course.

The recently concluded XDubai Spartan Race was definitely not your run-ofthe-mill kind of event. This is the more adventurous and adrenaline filled variety. Not only did the Spartans run, climb, and crawl across mud and obstacles, they also got to tackle many unique and challenging obstacles which tested their overall strength, balance, mental tenacity, and endurance. The Spartans finished it off with a leap of glory straight into the fire! It’s one of the most exciting, invigorating, and thrilling events that has happened in Bahrain! HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and

President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee pointed out that the participation of a large number of local and international contestants predict a bright future for endurance sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain chief among them being the Spartan Race, IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East, and other triathlon sports. HH added that many programs have been set to increase the momentum of hosting such sports in Bahrain, with the focus of placing the Kingdom as a hub for organizing different international sports events and promote the culture of sports amongst the Bahraini youth.

PREPPING FOR SPARTAN

One of the great things about the XDubai Spartan Race Bahrain Sprint is that there are workout sessions where people can prepare and feel great about the things that they can achieve, fitness-wise. The 6-week Spartan Race workout prepared by Fitness First gave insider tips and techniques on how to finish an obstacle race. The workouts, which were held every Friday at Al Najma Club included specific weekly sessions led by instructors trained specifically for the Spartan Race. Free “ I am training for Spartan” T-shirts were handed out on every session.

One of the PowerUp team getting over an obstacle.

THE RACE

The starting point of the inaugural XDubai Spartan Race, the muddy, obstacle-filled sprint was designed for everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes. The shorter Sprint (only 7 km!) presents an opportunity for the hardcore Elite to test themselves while giving new Spartans a start at their Trifecta! While it is an obstacle set for people to challenge themselves, the Spartan Race is all about camaraderie. We see people help each other to push through the obstacles and encourage themselves to go forward and finish the race. It does not matter if you’re a beginner or a gym athlete, if you believe you can, then you will do it! It’s all about conquering your fear.

BOXING

A

nthony Joshua (MBE) has exploded onto the boxing scene after winning the IBF Heavyweight boxing title at the O2 Arena in London (England) on 9 April 2016. Joshua is only the second British boxer ever to win both a gold medal at the Olympics and a world title by a major professional boxing body after following in the footsteps of David DeGale. The 26 year old was born in Waford, England to a Nigerian mother and father. He spent much of his early life in Nigeria but his family decided to move back to the UK to seek a better education for their young son. Joshua (or Femi as he was known by his friends and teachers) proved to be an excellent sportsman in both football and athletics. In the latter he smashed the school 100m record with a time of 11.6 seconds, this impressive speed would later come to good use in the boxing ring. Joshua was introduced to boxing at a relatively late age (if you can call 18 a late age) when his cousin suggested he take up the sport. At the time he was labouring on building sites to make ends meet and thought to himself, “Why not, what can I lose?” And so, in 2007 Anthony joined the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club in Barnet, North London. He initially began his fighting career in the Super @powerupmag

Heavyweight category in 2009 with a loss to British boxer Dillan Whyte. Thankfully Joshua had the strength of character to continue and in 2010 he won the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) National Championships as a Super Heavyweight. This was a very tumultuous period of time for the young boxer, although he was proving to be an excellent prospect in the boxing ring, he was mixing with the wrong characters in his personal life which resulted in court appearances, electronic tagging and a remand sentence for a minor drug offence. This saw the young boxer suspended from the Great Britian (GB) boxing squad after being handed a 12-month community service order. It proved to be the ‘kick in the behind’ that Joshua needed and he threw all he had into improving himself. He was a regular at boxing training, always pushing himself to the limits of his physical capability. However, he knew that boxing is not only a game of strength but a game of tactics. Anthony loves to play chess, stating that this as well as reading has helped him improve his fight game. And it looks to have worked. Joshua was selected to represent Great Britain in the Super Heavyweight division at the London Olympics in

2012 following a gold medal win at the Great Britain Championships and a silver at the World Championships. It proved to be a tough time for the boxer, after getting through to the last 16, Joshua was matched against Erislandy Savon (ranked No 4 in the amateur boxing world at the time). He won the bout on a controversial split decision. He then fought his way to the finals where he was to meet the reigning Olympic Champion, Roberto Cammarelle of Italy. Joshua struggled in the first two rounds but in the third he came out and threw some outstanding combinations to level the scorecard. Joshua was announced the new Olympic Champion after a count back and the following year began his professional career. And what a career that has been, he has to date had 16 professional appearances, winning them all by means of either Technical Knockout (TKO) or Knockout (KO). In fact, only one of those 16 fights has lasted past the third round, and that fight only lasted to the seventh of the scheduled twelve. He went on to win the IBF Heavyweight title, knocking out Charles Martin in the second round of the fight (winning the same title that was stripped from Tyson Fury, and one that he wants back). His combined technical

SPORTS & FITNESS

ability and raw punching power has made his opponents to date look distinctly average. Joshua has that killer instinct. He is like a great white shark circling his prey, looking for that one little opening and then launching in with pure power and aggression. You may think to yourself that the way in which he destroys his opponents would signify a warped personality, or give way to arrogance, but you could not be more wrong. It is not yet clear who Joshua will fight in his first title defense, many looked towards either Tyson Fury or Wladimir Klitschko but they are scheduled to fight a rematch on 9 July 2016 (Fury beat Klitschko on points to win the title). Eddie Hearn (Joshua’s promoter) has hinted that a fight between Joshua and Fury would generate up to 40 million GBP, however he also stated that his next fight would most likely be against an American opponent to capitalize on his growing fame. That said, I have no doubt that the Joshua vs. Fury fight will take place, hopefully this year or at the latest next year, but, whenever it does take place I hope that young Joshua continues as he has started and knocks the ‘Gypsy King’ into place (sorry Tyson, that’s a little biased, but you have to have a favourite).

THE EPILOGUE

CHAMPIONS OF THE

PAST DECADE BY GREGORY LAGUESSE

There are moments in sports that not only seal the faith of extraordinary athletes, but also create universal memories. Leaving us in joy, pain, anger, desperation, or ecstasy, they have imbued a sentiment which remains vivid in ourselves forever. Champions of the Past Decade will aim at doing just that: a salute to our collective memories, and to their creators.

UNRIVALLED TALENT

J

une 11, 2006, 2 p.m. PARIS – On a blistering afternoon, temperatures reached more than 32 degrees Celsius as Rolland Garros’ defending champion, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, put his imprint onto the red clay of Court Philippe Chatrier, shortly followed by world number one, the Helvetian Roger Federer. France being at the crossroads of Spain and Switzerland, has been vibrating for the past two weeks at the sound of swiss

bells and “VAMOS RAFA” acclaims – the same words written at the back of Nadal’s shoes. Indeed, this final is the most anticipated tennis game of the year, and the showdown promises to be electrical! Why? Well, few games in recent tennis history gathered such importance and such level of uncertainty. Federer, then aged 24 is already an accomplished player: an uncontested world number one and winner of 7 Grand Slams in total, 3 of

which he had just won in a row (Wimbledon last July, US Open last September, and Australian Open in January). In order to complete a Grand Chelem, Federer will have to conquer the one Grand Slam that eluded him: Rolland Garros. On the other side, Nadal is the new phenomenon, aged barely 20, yet presenting himself as the defending champion. The Spaniard seems to be the only player able to shake Federer’s

supremacy at that time. Even better, Nadal is undefeated on clay since his professional debut the year prior. Retaining his title against world number one would be writing history. Lastly, the match is a revenge of the 2005 semis. The opposition of style is noticeable even before the game started: Nadal is pumped-up and jumps like a boxer inside the corridor, in front of the impassable Federer placing his hands in his pocket. Paradoxically, Federer needs to

Despite a terrific start – winning the first set 6 games to 1 – and heroic finish by breaking a match serve, Federer did miss his one chance of Grand Chelem as he lost his lead during the tie break of the fourth and final set to a Nadal falling on the ground, in a mixture of satisfaction and disbelief. While everyone had anticipated Nadal to force the decision from his baseline with his superhuman forehand spin, the key of this match resulted in his newest ability to attack and risk a few volley points. The same volley points that would allow Nadal to rival Federer not only on clay, but eventually on Wimbledon’s grass too, allowing us at the same time to witness the greatest battles in tennis historyduring the following ten years.

prove himself against an opponent who successfully passed their last three encounters: Rome, Monte Carlo, and Dubai. Roger had even extended training in the Middle East where the conditions are warmer, in order to prepare for this very final.

NEYMAR JR’S 5 Red Bull’s international sporting football event kicks off in Bahrain! PowerUp Sports is proud to partner in such an exciting event!

Red Bull NeymarJr's Five is the world's first and only NeymarJr's signature football tournament, with qualifiers currently being held globally, and this Ramadan it will kick off in Bahrain. The tournament will comprise of 6 qualifiers across the island, from which the top 16 teams will advance to the national final and battle it out for a chance to compete

RULES OF THE GAME This five a-side football game’s main objective is to score as many goals as fast as possible and outplay the players of the other team. The tournament requires each team to be made up of 5 players, in which the scoring team gets to send one player of the opposing team off the pitch. This process continues until one team has lost all 5 players. Each game will last10 minutes. Every tournament is set up in group stages and play-offs, so that all teams get the chance to play several games.

at the world final in Brazil. More than 35 countries in over six continents, will host a qualifier. It´s a true testament to NeymarJr´s roots and style of playing football. The sportive format underlines his key abilities as one of the most talented strikers in the world and his continuous striving for fun in his life. FIVE TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF SCORING! The aim of the game is to outplay them all… and the only way to do that is to simply keep on scoring! To help you on your journey to the world finals in Brazil, we have gathered the five best tips to help you score match winning goals just like Neymar Jr. 1. Shoot wide instead of high. There’s a better chance of getting a deflection that will wrong-foot the goal defender. 2. Keep an eye on the defender’s position… have they left a gap that you can exploit?

3. Shoot across the defender. It’s tougher for them to keep these shots under control which means they could divert the ball back into the path of another attacker.

4. Keep your head down and your body over the ball when striking. If your body is too upright, the ball will follow its path and travel above the goal! 5. Maintain your composure. Stay cool, calm and collected.

HERE ARE A FEW PROTIPS FROM THE LEGEND HIMSELF, NEYMAR JR. FIVE EASY MISTAKES WHEN PLAYING FIVE-A-SIDE Not using the roll on, roll off sub rule – The majority of footballers want to play the game as much as possible but if you’re getting tired remember to use the rolling subs rule. If you don’t have a sub, go and play in defence to get your breath back. Lack of man-to-man marking – To win a game of five-a-side, you must win your individual battles. When the opposition is constantly on the move, trying to find space, man-to-man marking may be difficult. But pick a man and stay with him, if you don’t, your opposition will have a 2 v 1 situation. Being lazy and standing

still – Five-a-side football is known for being a fast game, it’s all about short, sharp passing and creating space, so if you’re standing still and being lazy, you’re no good to anyone! Taking too many touches – As previously mentioned, short, sharp passes and movement is key to winning a five-a-side game, if you take too many touches and dwell on the ball you’re liable to lose possession. Giving up! – We all know that when playing five-a-side you must play until the final whistle. If you’re down by a few goals, don’t give up, the game isn’t over yet! It only takes a second to score a goal and a result can be turned around within minutes. www.powerup-mag.com

WHICH CITY ARE YOU CURRENTLY FIGHTING OUT OF?

I represent the Kingdom of Bahrain and KHK-MMA.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET STARTED IN MMA?

When I was 14 years old, my older brother brought me to the MMA Gym. I was very lucky because Coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov (Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father) was working in this gym and became my trainer. He is an amazing teacher who has trained over 20 World Champions in different martial arts. Everything I have learnt has been through him.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STRIKE AND/OR SUBMISSION?

I like the “Kimura” submission and combinations of boxing technique in striking.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN FIGHTING OR IN LIFE?

I don’t come from a sports oriented family so I don’t have a sports mentor in my close surrounding. But in life I always tried to learn the best human qualities and values from my parents and my grandpa. This is what has helped me a lot in my career.

WHAT DOES BEING A FIGHTER MEAN TO YOU?

It’s difficult to describe what it means to be a fighter. I think only those who step inside of a cage can understand me.

FIGHTERS?

I don’t know, I’m just doing what I like to do. Maybe it’s in my blood.

HOW DO YOU SPLIT YOUR TIME BETWEEN FIGHTING AND COACHING?

When I first got offered to become a coach, I thought that it would be hard to train young fighters, but I have learned to reap the advantages. In fact, when I teach I am always trying to show something new; I analyze the fights of the best fighters, make records of new techniques, and often these

THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS A FIGHTER/ COACH CAN BE REMEMBERED FOR. WHAT WOULD YOU WANT YOUR LEGACY TO BE?

More than a year has passed since I moved to Bahrain. I really fell in love with this country and its people. My goal is to be a good example for the youth and to make the young generation of Bahrain interested in sports. I wish children would stop spending so much time watching

television or playing video games and come join us to lead a healthy lifestyle and to learn discipline.

DO YOU HAVE A FIGHT COMING UP SOON?

Yes in fact I do. I recently started preparing for my next fight. The CEO of KHK-MMA, Mohammed Shahid, informed me a few days ago of the good news; I will be fighting in Europe in early June. As soon as we know the name of my opponent and all details of the event, we will definitely share it. You can see all my updates on the KHK-MMA website.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE COMING YEAR?

I have big plans for 2016. I want to compete in three professional fights and make a contract with one of the leading MMA Promotion companies of the world. This year should be a positive shift on different levels.

POWERUP

ADVENTURE (SOFITEL STYLE)

Now that summer is officially here, we tried out some watersports at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa to give you a preview of what activities you can do at the luxury resort.

S

ofitel is well-known to be “the” place to go to in Bahrain. But aside from the incredible facilities, the awesome food, and the spectacular view, did you know that you can also channel your inner adrenaline junkie and partake in some intense watersports activities? Check out our PowerUp team adventures!

BANANA BOAT

A staple in watersport season, the banana boat is the quintessential happy family ride. On our own banana boat, we were asked if we wanted to fall down. Of course we said no! They asked us to hold on tight to the rope cords that were provided and then began the ride of our lives! It was incredible how bumpy the water can be especially when the boat guides did as much tricks as they possibly can to try and get us to fall down! At the end of the ride, our hands were chafing from holding on to the ropes, but it was definitely super exciting!

how to use the jet skis and went on our first ride with us. (There’s no brake, you only stop). It’s easy to be a pro on the jet ski as you can see from our pictures, we definitely rode with some style.

TOMYIN

This looked to be the easiest watersport of all, however, this was the ride that we “failed” in terms of results. We were supposed to put our center of gravity at the top of the tomyin so that the inflatable U-Tube won’t keel over and overturn us, but for some reason, once the boat started pulling us, we just couldn’t keep to the top of the tube and we were just hanging on for dear life. Needless to say, we overturned in a few minutes and were paddling frantically in the water until we were helped to the boat. Once we

caught our breath, our guide gently told us to go back again to the raft and we did to try and do it properly this time. Unfortunately, we were dunked again in only two minutes! This time around, gasping for air and having drank our share of salty seawater, the guides decided to take us back to shore.

Wow! This was the most awesome activity we’ve ever done so far! Absolutely adore the jetskiing. The banana boat was supremely good for laughs. While the tomyin will be something we will recommend to others !

JET SKIING

The original Yamaha wave runners created back in the day, were for those people who cannot get enough of the water. (Of course, Hawaiians also used it to travel from island to island.) Our instructor taught us

Racing non-stop and entirely self-supported for days, athletes will battle extreme conditions, and can expect to drop dead from extreme exhaustion or catch frostbite or hypothermia. Racers have the option of covering 100, 300, or 430 (every other year) miles on foot, bike, or skis, and can expect long stretches of solo travel over rough, unmaintained trails while towing their survival gears on the sled. This is definitely the world’s coldest and toughest endurance race

ENDURANCE RACE

TOR DES GEANTS, ITALY

The Tor de Geants is the first and only race to combine long-distance with the individual style of runners, the organization does not impose any compulsory stages, and the winner will be the runner who completes the race in the shortest time, making his or her own decisions on when and how long to stop for rest and refreshment. This non-stop, week-long running race through Italy’s Aosta Valley takes the cake for being one of the toughest races in our books. Think of this race as running on a saw blade, with constant ups and downs and hardly any flats. For those at the front of the field, sleep deprivation, technical terrain, steep climbs, and brutal downhills destroy knees, ankles, and quads. For those who simply want to participate, it can be a much more civilized experience, provided they can make the cut-offs. On the upside, there are fantastically- appointed life bases and refuges for sleeping; and great food (pasta, cheese, wine, and beer) to refuel on. This is a demanding race and yet it also allows one to enjoy the good things in life.

CAPE EPIC, SOUTH AFRICA

The Absa Cape Epic is an annual mountain bike stage race held in the Western Cape of South Africa. It has been credited as hors categorie (beyond categorization) by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Among other events in the world of cycling which enjoy this status are the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a Espana. First staged in 2004, the race typically covers more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) and lasts eight days—a prologue and seven stages. The Cape Epic attracts elite professional mountain bikers from around the world, who compete in teams of two. To qualify for a finish, teams have to stay together for the duration of the race. Sometimes referred to as the Tour de France of mountain biking, the fullysupported Absa Cape Epic sits near the top of any mountain bike enthusiast’s bucket list. This is one of the very few races where amateurs (who enter a lottery in order to win a slot) have a chance to race alongside World Champions.

SPORTS & FITNESS

CHASQUI CHALLENGE, PERU The Chasqui challenge is a 100- mile stage race in the Andes Mountains that happens every June. The Challenge is comprised of the Inca Trail Marathon—27.5 miles on the Inca Trail toward the ancient ruins of Macchu Picchu—followed by a 31 mile trek around Mt. Ausangate with a few other distance- running days tossed in. You’ll traverse three major peaks scaling heights of nearly 14,000 feet on the marathon course. Be sure to save post-Inca trail energy though, because just three days later, you’ll begin the Mt. Ausangate circuit traversing the highest pass at 16,600 feet. Sign up in advance because Inca Trail permits often run out six months beforehand. With an entry fee of over $3,000 you won’t want to make this mistake. The running adventure begins in Cusco, the archaeological capital of the Americas, at an altitude of 11,150 feet. Here you’ll see massive walls, cobblestone streets, and remnants of the Inca Empire and the Spanish colonial period. The spectacular variety of trails in the Southern Peruvian Andes makes this challenge both physical and cultural.

DIAMAN THE NEW SUPERHERO! Having a healthy lifestyle while being diabetic is already a bit of challenge, Dr. Shaikh Saqer shares his experiences in overcoming diabetes and conquering Ironman South Africa!

W

I didn’t have a Bat-mobile, I had a bicycle, and my grin was my mask, I am not an IRONMAN, I am a Diabetic IRONMAN, a proud and hopeful DIAMAN!

42 | PowerUp | May 2016

hat happens when a diabetic person becomes an IRONMAN? The answer is simple, he becomes a superhero in our modern world. This past April 10, for the fourth time in my life, I did an IRONMAN in South Africa! This time, episode 4, it was not as easy as before, I felt like I was fighting both Batman and Superman at the same time! My training was during the winter time here in Bahrain, so that meant that the weather was very pleasant for long rides and runs. The good thing about this is that sustaining energy becomes radically easier relative to the warmer and hotter time of year. The bad thing is that it is difficult to carefully plan your nutrition when your actual endurance event is in a much warmer climate. This is what happened to me. I did do the South Africa IRONMAN before, but this time the weather was not as friendly, it reached 37 degrees Celsius at times. What this did to me was that I underwent a 12 hour and 54 minute continuous battle with my nemesis, the dreaded diabetes disease. It began during the swim, the waves were not friendly, and I forgot to take my energy bar before the start. I was so excited about my 4th IRONMAN, that I was afraid I would forget something during my preparations. Bike and run shoes, socks, wetsuit, goggles, bike, food on bike, helmet, numbers, cap, sunglasses, Vaseline, gloves, compression socks,

salt tablets, more food, more socks, and extra of everything, I had it all. The only thing I forgot was that energy bar before the swim. I said to myself that it shouldn’t matter, it should be an easy and fast 3.8km swim. It was actually a long, hard, wavy, and tough swim. Battling hypoglycemia made me consume most of my packed nutrition right at the beginning of the bike leg. By midway, I lost faith and power in my legs to push my bike forwards, I was about to give up. But a 10-minute stop to take in two cheese sandwiches were to me like spinach to Popeye, albeit a bit longer to process. In no time, I was pushing again, trying to catch up where I have left off. But it was the catching up part that emptied my fuel all over again. The lesson learned here is once bouncing back, don’t get over excited again, but this is easier said than done. After a grueling on and off bike, it was again a hot, humid, and hypoglycemic run. I had the legs, probably for the first time in any IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 that I have done, but I kept on losing my sight and balance. I knew I had to drink a lot of Coke, eat, and walk for a while until my body processes the intake. So I decided to do the right thing, accept temporary defeat and build up for the remaining 24km of running, and it worked! I recovered and finished a strong last few kilometers. At the end, it was a diabetic rollercoaster war in an IRONMAN field. It was not a fair battle, but I re-strategized in the midst of conflict and came out a winning champion at the other end. I didn’t have a Bat-mobile, I had a bicycle, and my grin was my mask, I am not an IRONMAN, I am a Diabetic IRONMAN, a proud and hopeful DIAMAN!

MEMOIRS OF AN

F1 ENTHUSIAST

The rip-roaring sound of engines, the bright colors and the iconic chequered flag: all these are part of the experience that is Formula One. We caught up with Sohail, a motorsport enthusiast who shared with us his love for the sport and his experiences at the recently concluded Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix.

T

he Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will always be a legacy to the Middle East not only because it is the first Formula One track to be built in the GCC, but also for its versatility. It has hosted the race during the day and now conducts night races. The building is glorified when the floodlights are turned on. The stands are jampacked with people wanting to see their favorite drivers; families with little ones enjoying the show; journalists and car enthusiasts all coming together for one great event. The Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is special in the Formula One history. Many drivers had their first victories, their first podiums, and their first pole positions

46 | PowerUp | May 2016

in the BIC. A lot of Formula One has been written on that iconic track. The massive efforts of the Bahrain International Circuit in hosting this event involved thousands of men behind a 57 lap race. Of course, throughout the week, there were support races of GT2 and GT3. And as always, the glamour behind the race where a massive music concert was hosted to entertain race fans.

AN EXCITING TWIST

This year’s event had a slight twist from previous years wherein there was a restriction on the tires given on the elimination round. James Allen of JamesAllenonF1 said “the new rule permitting the drivers a choice of three

tyre compounds in the race is the most interesting and exciting of the changes to the 2016 regulations. It opens up several viable strategy options and this leads to cars racing each other with performance offsets, enough to promote close battles and more overtaking”, which has led to a more exciting and energetic performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Sohail, our photojournalist has followed Formula One since his school days and has always been struck by the energy, the action, and the teamwork present in one event. The accuracy and precision of the drivers as they are pulling into straight lines and corners is mesmerizing. Jenson Button has said about driving through the corners in an F1

car “It’s like somebody pulling your head off”. And the BIC has some good turns with a lot of gravity built into it. A lot of champions have been in this field, Sohail says “When I go to the finish line, and take a picture, I feel so connected with the rest of the racing world”. Photographs have indeed withstood the test of time, creating an archive of images that spans generations of interest. Sohail, for this incredible journey, has Canon Middle East to thank for the 1DX Mark II that he used to capture the 2016 Formula OneGulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. This camera is simply amazing. “Colors from Cannon have always impressed me. 1DX Mark II is innovative and refined as well as legendary with 14fps speed and 61 point AF system”. Sohail says “with a camera like this, the bar is set higher! What you plan to capture is delivered by this camera. Low light or high speed, nothing is an issue when you want to capture a good photo”. Sohail adds “I am looking to deliver the best shots, and am always looking for something different”. www.powerup-mag.com

FORMULA 1

A WORD FROM THE PHOTOJOURNALIST

“When I go to the finish line, and take a picture, I feel so connected with the rest of the racing world”.

Who is your main inspiration in photography and why? Darren Heath (http:// www,darrenheath.com/) is my top inspiration. His work is phenomenal. The way he sees the action is totally different and that’s where I want to be. different! How long have you been in photography and how did you develop your style? Leaving some immature photos from school time, I started seeing thru the lens in 2005 and never stopped since then. I started with landscape photography and what I do is fuse motorsport and landscape. What I always look for are lines, reflections, angles which are above or below the eye level. I mean there are photographs which need to taken with standards like portraits but for all other rules are meant to be broken. What type of camera do you use and what are your favorite accessories? I love Canon. My first camera was also Canon (in school days when there was no digital AE1 was my best buddy). Now I use 1DX Mark I and 1Ds Mark IV. For 2016 Canon Middle East supported me with Canon 1DX Mark II. I must say this is the best camera I have seen. The images are perfect. The response of the camera is

MOTORING

brilliant. Colors that blows the mind. It is simply fantastic. What lens would you choose to carry during F1 and what lens is in your wish list to buy? For F1 my favorite is 400mm 2.8. I wish to get my hands on 500mm. What was your memorable shot in F1 and why is it so memorable to you? In 2012 F1 in Bahrain, It was towards the end of the race and I was walking to photograph the checkered flag. I don’t know why but the part of lens where we mount the monopod got locked. Which means I cannot hold the lens in the correct position with the monopod stand mounted to it. I had 1D Mark IV and 600mm lens. That’s plus 5kgs of weight hand held for several laps. My arms and shoulders went numb but the result is something which till date I admire. What is your favorite F1 photo this year and what do you still wish to shoot? This year there are a lot of images which are my favorite. Thanks again to Canon Middle East for 1Dx Mark II. Since the event shifted to night, my favorite image are the one’s with sparks as this says a lot about speed. Also there are images of drivers which has a lot of expressions, back grounds etc.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Living well and being fit with

DIABETES BEING DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. HERE ARE SOME STEPS TO GET BACK ON TRACK AND TAKE YOUR HEALTH IN YOUR OWN HANDS. More than 15% of Bahrain’s population has now been diagnosed with diabetes. Lifestyle changes like reduced physical activity, eating more fast food and increased smoking over the last few decades have led to soaring rates of diabetes across the whole Gulf region. Commonly known as lifestyle diseases, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes are often products of our environment and the choices we make in them. The truth of the matter is that Type 2 Diabetes is a fully preventable condition and it’s also close to 100% reversible, provided you take the proper steps to heal your body.

TAKE THE FIRST STEP TO HEALTH

Lifestyle modifications (including regular exercise) play an integral part in managing and preventing Type 2 Diabetes. There are many other health and fitness benefits associated with physical activity and endurance exercise training. Physical activity is known to prevent the occurrence of cardiac events, and reduce the incidence of strokes, hypertension, depression and chronic injuries.

52 | PowerUp | May 2016

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR EXERCISE FOR THE DIABETIC ARE: • Lowers blood sugar levels and improves how your body uses insulin • Decreases blood pressure and makes your heart stronger • Helps control weight by increasing metabolism • Increases muscular strength and stamina • Increases flexibility and improves balance • Reduces stress and improves sense of well being • Helps you sleep better • Boosts energy levels

GETTING STARTED

Although there are many benefits of exercise, it is important to consult with your doctor before starting with any exercise routine. If you're taking insulin or medications, test your blood sugar 30 minutes before exercising. Consider these general guidelines relative to your blood sugar level: • Lower than 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L). Your blood sugar may be too low to exercise safely. Eat a small snack containing 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrates, such as fruit juice, fruit, crackers or even glucose tablets before you begin your workout. • 100 to 250 mg/dL (5.6 to 13.9 mmol/L). You're good to start. For most people this is the ideal range before exercising.

• 250 mg/dL (13.9 mmol/L) or higher. This is a caution zone — your blood sugar may be too high to exercise safely. Living an active life is important. Here are ways to ensure you remain active during the day: • Plan to be as active as possible (walking as often as you can). • Get off the elevator one flight away from your destination and walk up the last flight. • Park at the far end of the parking lot and walk to the office or store. • Get up from your desk during the day to walk around. • Walk your dog. • Reduce TV and computer time.

MIND & BODY

JOHAN ESTERHUIZEN is a biokineticist who has a Masters degree in Human Movement Science

Recent research shows that a diabetic fitness program should include both aerobic and resistance exercises:

AEROBIC EXERCISE 150MNT X7

8-10

EXERCISE SAFETY TIPS:

• Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing. • Wear shoes that fit properly. • Avoid exercise that causes stress to the feet (e.g. running or jumping). • Inspect your feet after activity for sores. • Drink about 500 ml of water 30-60 minutes before a workout, and 250-300ml of water every 15 minutes during exercise. • Morning exercise may cause your blood glucose to drop less than if you exercise later in the day. • Monitor your blood glucose levels before, if possible during (at least initially), and after exercise to assess your

@powerupmag

requirements for extra food. • If you exercise in the evening, you may need to take a carbohydrate snack before going to bed to prevent a low blood glucose reaction while you sleep. • Start slowly and gradually increase. • Take extra carbohydrates before and during exercise if needed to prevent hypoglycemia. • Always warm up before exercising. • Cool down after exercises. • Don’t hold your breath, exhale with effort. • Maintain good posture. • Listen to your body. • If you feel pain upon exercising, stop.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Aerobic exercise is typically repetitive movements involving large muscle groups. It is aimed at improving aerobic fitness. Examples of aerobic exercise include walking, swimming and cycling. At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiorespiratory exercise each week (30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity 5 days a week) is advised for patients with Type 2 diabetes. Patients with Type 1 diabetes are encouraged to exercise every day. If you haven’t been very active recently, you can start out with 5-10 minutes a day.

RESISTANCE EXERCISE Patients with diabetes should be encouraged to achieve two to three resistance training sessions each week. The goal should be to exercise all the major muscle groups. This includes 8 – 10 exercises, and 10 – 15 repetitions of each exercise. Types of activities include working out with weight machines, light weights, resistance bands, doing body weight exercises(push-ups, squats) or classes that involve strength training.

SAFETY IS THE MAIN PRIORITY Exercise is strongly advocated for all patients with controlled diabetes. After getting the all clear from your doctor, consult with a qualified exercise physiologist or biokineticist to evaluate you and design an exercise program according to your needs.

MYTH BUSTERS

REMY J. SLEIMAN is the Operations Manager for Carlton Preventive Nutrition Center.

HEALTH MYTH BUSTERS As a dietitian, consulting people on a daily basis, getting to know their thoughts and beliefs in nutrition and healthy eating, made me think of how I can help in spreading the awareness of living healthily Myths and legends, especially in food and nutrition, are so many. What to believe and what to ignore is a bit confusing. I say everything is healthy, in MODERATION; but let’s talk about a few myths that people do take seriously.

FOR YEARS, NUTRITION EXPERTS WARNED THAT EGGS WERE UNHEALTHY Eggs raise the risk of heart attacks and strokes, right? That is WRONG! 75% of the cholesterol in our body is manufactured by the liver which produces lots of cholesterol when you eat saturated fat--something eggs are low in. Eggs are also

54 | PowerUp | May 2016

filled with useful nutrients, like unsaturated fat, folate and other B vitamins, which balance any damage caused by their cholesterol content.

FAT-FREE AND LOW-FAT FOODS ARE ALWAYS HEALTHIER THAN FULL-FAT VARIETIES When it comes to dairy products and some other foods, such as meat, you can adopt a simple rule; the less fat, the better. But some good fat in the meal, such as olive oil or canola oil may help prevent heart disease and other disorders.

FROZEN OR CANNED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES ARE LESS NUTRITIOUS THAN FRESH ONES Once picked, fresh fruits and vegetables are more nutritious. However what

at What we e to day affects our g, our in day well be hysical dp mental an ce, and performan erm our long-t ease dis health and ts. prospec

we find on the shelves has had a long journey from the moment they were packed, thus nutrients are lost. On the other hand, frozen fresh goods preserve much of its vitamins and minerals. For example, frozen beans retain twice as much vitamin C as fresh beans; canned spinach and pumpkin have higher levels of vitamin A than fresh ones.

SALADS ARE THE SAFEST LUNCH FOR SLIMMING Just because it is called a salad does not mean it is low in calories. One tablespoon of dressing can contain around 100 calories and more than 10g of fat. Watch out for your salad plate and always make sure you are going with the lowest fat ingredients.

IF I’M NOT OVERWEIGHT, I DON’T HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT I EAT

Let’s say the body is a machine, don’t you want to use the best fuel to keep it going strong? It is the same with food. Even if you’ve never had a problem with your weight, it’s important to choose healthy foods every day.

FAST FOODS ARE ALWAYS AN UNHEALTHY CHOICE Many fast foods are unhealthy and may affect weight gain. However, if you do eat fast food, choose menu options with care; choose healthy foods that are: • nutrient rich • low in calories • small in portion size. Choose fresh fruit items or nonfat yogurt for dessert. Pick steamed or baked items over fried ones. Sip on water instead of soda. Botox works by blocking the nerves that contract muscles, softening the appearance of wrinkles.

Sun, wind, and gravity all affect the face resulting in frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, and an increasing heaviness of the eyebrows. One of the things that can help this syndrome is the forehead lift. This treatment is commonly

used to lift the brow and smooth the forehead, while some can even lower a high hairline and improve facial balance and harmony. A forehead lift usually takes one to two hours to perform and recovery is fast.

SKIN CARE

SUMMER

SKINLOVE BY NINA DELA CRUZ

We all know that in the Middle East sunny weather can be very unforgiving especially to the skin. In the peak summer months of July and August, temperatures may reach up to 50° C (122° F). It is very important to keep our skin moisturized and fresh because not only is it a healthy practice but looking good starts with healthy looking skin (not to mention it prevents the signs of ageing). We rounded up a few tips for you to keep your skin glowing even before the real hot weather kicks in.

MOISTURIZE Summer weather can leave the skin dry and rough. Moisturizing prevents skin dryness and damage as well as sun breakage, sun spots and freckles. Use moisturizers with SPF 15 or higher for that added protection. For the ladies, there are tinted moisturizers available that can substitute as your foundation. Apply moisturizing lotion on your body and face moisturizers after your morning shower, throughout the day as much as you want especially on hot afternoons, and before bedtime.

THE BIG H: HYDRATE Hydration is essential everyday but even more during the hot season to prevent dehydration and heat stroke. Who doesn’t love a cool glass of water on a hot day? The more water intake, the better. At least 10 glasses a day keeps you feeling energized and helps decrease stress levels. Fresh juices are good too but try avoiding sodas if you can as they actually leave you more thirsty and adds on unnecessary sugar.

SUNSCREEN

Most people overlook sunscreen and use it only when they go to the beach but this should actually be in line with brushing our teeth every day. Sunscreen

62 | PowerUp | May 2016

helps prevent skin diseases brought about by the harmful rays of the sun. There are a lot of sunscreen products out there and some people just don’t know which one to use. Sunscreens can be intimidating. What does SPF/ UVB/UVA mean? And what is the difference between SPF 15/30/50/100? Here is the lowdown: UVB means Ultra Violet B rays which are the sun rays that may cause your skin to burn the outer layer of the skin called dermis. UVA stands for Ultra Violet A rays which penetrate deeper into the epidermis. SPF simply means Sun Protection Factor and the numbers that follow it represents the amount of protection the sunscreen has against UVBs and UVAs. SPF 15 gives 93% protection, SPF 30 gives 97%, SPF 50 protects about 98%, and SPF 100 gives you 99% protection. With most skin types, a sunscreen with SPF 15 should suffice. If you have more sensitive skin you can opt to go higher.

a towel, rather pat it dry so as to not irritate the skin. These are just a few of the many tips to help take care of your skin during the hot season. If you have a daily skincare routine of your own, you can add these tips to your routine. If you don’t have a skincare routine now is a good way to start caring for it. Now go and hit the beach and put on some sunscreen!

EXFOLIATE

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that clog the pores and also helps your moisturizers do a better job as it penetrates deeper into the skin. It is best to exfoliate in the morning for that all-day fresh rejuvenated feeling. Never rub your face dry with

COSMETOLOGY

BLEPHAROPLASTY Though aging may cause skin to sag and eyelids to droop, science and modern medicine have worked hand in hand to develop a treatment called blepharoplasty, a “fix” for drooping and swollen eyelids. Gulf Diabetes Specialist Center caters to these kind of treatments.

E

very person wants to have an attractive appearance, however it cannot be denied that aging affects our appearance, sometimes for the worst. Ageing is a natural process that affects all parts of the body, however it is not an enemy. Because of today’s advanced technology, many ageing processes can be fixed. One such fix or treatment is “blepharoplasty” or eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty fixes drooping and swollen eyelids to give focus and emphasis back to the eyes. It treats the extra skin, fat, and loose muscles, the so-called “blepharochalasis”. In this cosmetic procedure, the skin lines are used in order to complete the full portrait and reconstruct this vital area of the face. Blepharochalsis does not only affect the appearance but also the function of the eyelids, and in time, heaviness and pressure and even headaches may result apart from vision affectation in severe cases. Blepharoplasty not only treats blepharochalsis; it treats the bags under your eyelids and any deformation following injuries, masses, pimples…etc.

This procedure is done on a one-day-care basis under local anaesthesia. Within a couple of hours, you will be back home, and within a couple of days, able to get back to work. This kind of art is no longer a “What-to-do” question; it is now a “How-to-do” question. I mean it can be performed at the same time as another procedure, such as a brow lift, eyelid lift (Ptosis repair), facelift or skin resurfacing. Every case is a unique one, no procedure is just like another. As an oculoplastic surgeon, I will evaluate your case and discuss it with you. An honest discussion of your hopes and motivation for the procedure will help us meet your expectations. A thorough eye examination will be performed, including vision and taking eyelid photography. Your medical history is a cornerstone in avoiding side effects. You will need to stop aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil), Naproxen, and any other medication or herbal supplements associated with increased bleeding. It’s best not to use these medications and supplements for two weeks before and after the procedure. Please show me all the medications that you are

All the instructions will be given to you during discussion of the case and before scheduling the procedure. Insurance coverage may depend on whether the case affects the function of eyelids and vision, or just for cosmetic purposes Remember that because we care in Gulf Diabetes Specialist Center, the Eye Clinic is fully equipped and all the staff will be happy to welcome you and take care of you as soon as you call us. NUTRITION

KICK START APPROACH TO FAT LOSS:

Many people focus on just losing weight and start doing a lot of Cardiovascular Training (CV) such as running and cycling due to which during the process they often loose muscle where as the main aim should be losing fat and increase muscle which would

1

EXERCISE:

It plays a very important role in order for you to achieve the body that you desire, it’s very important to train and choose the correct exercises for your goals making sure the technique is correct in order to avoid any injuries. Both the resistance training and cardiovascular training have benefits but for someone with a goal of losing weight i.e. loosing fats should combine both together and do High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).

increase fitness levels and improve the body shape, and this can be achieved by combining the CV and Resistance training along with a good diet. Losing weight is always going to be about energy balance. To lose weight the calories coming in must be fewer than calories going out. In order to do this you need to address the three main areas:

NUTRITION:

What you eat in private shows in public, So food has a major effect on our health and looks for which we should make right choices when it comes to eating and should know what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat. Someone with a goal of losing fat should keep the carbs low which are rice, pasta, potato, bread and increase the protein levels by eating eggs, chicken breasts, fish and red meats. The reason to keep carbs low is as it’s the main source of energy in our body and if that energy is not consumed it stores as fat in our body and the proteins help in building muscles for which we need to increase in intake of protein. Eating healthy fats is also very important as it helps get rid of the bad fats in the body.

5 PRINCIPLES OF ACCELERATED FAT LOSS: Eat Fat to lose Fat (Means eating foods with healthy fats like Avocado, Almonds, and Fish). Reduce Carbohydrates to prevent unnecessary fat storage and to control insulin which would promote fat burning. Consume sufficient protein to preserve muscle mass and promote optimal recovery following resistance training. Consume plenty of vegetables and drink plenty of water to create an optimal environment for all chemical reactions to boost metabolism. Complete weekly resistance training and high intensity cardio training to boost metabolism.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

METABOLISM:

2

is a process in which the body converts the food which we eat into energy, so having a high metabolism helps in burning more as the body constantly keeps working and to increase the metabolism rate it’s important to have smaller portions of meals every 3 hours so instead of having breakfast, lunch and dinner try to keep snacks in-between. A common mistake which most people do while trying to lose weight is by dieting by having 1 or 2 meals a day which is wrong and unhealthy as the metabolic rate drops down, another way to increase the metabolic rate is by doing resistance training.

FAT BURNING WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENTS:

When the word ‘fat burner’ is used to describe a diet pill or weight loss supplement, the product may contain an amphetamine like compound with potentially lethal effects on the central nervous system and heart. ‘Fat burners ‘or ‘fat burning’ weight loss supplements do not burn or reduce fat in a healthy way.

3

CALORIE CONSUMPTION:

The amount of calories we need largely varies and depends on how much energy our body requires and is therefore dependent on our metabolism or metabolic rate. Our metabolic rate is the rate at which we use calories. It is particularly influenced by activity and lifestyle. It is faster when we are training or doing physical activity and slower when we are rest. The more active we are, the more calories we need. CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

THE COMPANY

The way that corporations choose to manufacture and/or package their products might affect the environment in ways both big and small. That’s why it’s always refreshing to hear about companies that are promoting sustainable and eco-friendly practices. We sat down with Matthew R. TRAVEL GEAR It’s the season to travel! Make sure you keep fit by packing these essentials with you.

I

t’s coming to that time of the year again. The weather is heating up and the racing season round the world is picking up. So, it’s time to travel. It’s no secret that a lot of people living in the GCC like to travel during summer to escape the sweltering heat. Traveling for pleasure and traveling to race is very popular during this period and this means that there is a lot of packing, preparation and body care to consider. There are thousands of articles out there that list things like passports, documents, bank cards and sim cards as important items not to forget for the average traveller. But the reality is that we are not your average traveller. So let’s take a look at some of the important aspects

68 | PowerUp | May 2016

of travel for an athlete.

TRAVEL BAGS

The most awkward thing for an athlete to travel with has to be a bicycle. It’s large, has a strange shape and is very difficult to manoeuvre. But it doesn’t have to be. Brands like Scicon (Available at TriLife, Bahrain) make amazing bicycle bags, both hard and soft that will change your world when it comes to travelling with a bicycle. They have developed bags specifically engineered around the geometry and design of all road, mountain and TT bikes. These days, bike bags are so well designed and well-made that your bike is almost guaranteed to arrive on the other side in perfect shape. Not to mention the built in wheels and handles

making navigation through an airport an absolute breeze. Scicon bags also come equipped with official TSA locking mechanisms, allowing your bag to slide through borders hassle free. Having a bike bag also means that you have more packing space. As long as you are within the weight limits, you can actually fill the gaps in your bike bag with small necessities like cycling shoes, helmet and even tools. It is always best to be prepared for the worst. The last thing you need is to arrive at your training camp in Thailand and you are welcomed by the sight of a bent derailer hanger or twisted seat and bars with no easy solution. So packing in a small tool kit like the Lezyne Port-A-Shop is a fantastic idea. Even if you

don’t use it, you have that peace of mind that all will be well on the other side. If you find yourself asking: “How on earth do I use those funny looking tools?” Do not fear. When you purchase the tools from a local bike shops like TriLife in Bahrain, they will be more than happy to give you a quick lesson on how to use them.

COMPRESSION GEARS

It’s no secret that traveling abroad can be tiresome and has some negative effects on your body. And when the reason for your travel is to train, or race, minimising these adverse effects is imperative. Compression gear from brands like Compressport is a tried and

at their best and of course as a fashion statement. So having a good quality pair of sunglasses in your carry-on luggage is simply a must. There are in fact brands out there that have managed to produce a product that incorporates all three of these things into one. Rudy Project has a range of eye candy that is simply a necessity for the traveling athlete.

@powerupmag

For a frequent flyer, keeping track of the time in different times zones can be quite a pain. Especially when hopping on and off connecting flights. When

you consider your need to keep track of time, the need for a good quality training computer and the fact that you most likely wear a watch throughout the day anyway, something like a good quality GPS sports watch might be worth adding to your birthday wish list. It combines all of these needs into one solution. A fully functional GPS sports watch like the Garmin Fenix 3 is so much more than just a training tool and fashion accessory. It allows you to track your path while on an African safari, monitor the weather conditions while on the beach in Mallorca, and even retrace your steps through the streets of Paris. The series of Garmin Fenix 3

watches offer automatic time zones, reminders, full training and racing functionality across all sports, social media and instant messaging interface, light weight functionality and is a good looking accessory! It’s everything the traveling athlete needs, all on your wrist. Genius! So there are a lot of products out there that have been designed to make your traveling experience a whole lot simpler. TAG Heuer Aqua Racer This is the essential sports watch inspired by the aquatic world. Its advanced technology make it a benchmark for performance, strength, and precision. With the legendary six features of a professional dive watch, it offers unrivalled reliability, utility, and ruggedness. With its ingenious design, Aquaracer offers a charismatic expression of indomitable spirit.

Like its 1975 predecessor, the new Marinemaster Professional 1000m Diver’s has the two-layer case construction that is now the trademark of Seiko’s professional diver’s watches. Thanks to the strength of the inner case structure, the specially designed L-shaped gasket and the screw-down glass fixing ring, the watch is effectively impermeable to helium and can be safely used for saturation diving to great depths. The use of ceramic for the outer shell enhances shock resistance and also prevents any unintentional rotation of the bezel. In September 2014, Seiko professional diver’s watches of the same case construction were subjected to the most extreme test imaginable. Affixed to the exterior hull of KAIKO 7000 II, a remotely operated undersea research vehicle, they performed perfectly down to a depth of 3,000m. PUSH YOUR LIMITS

FASHION & GEARS

Summer time is the perfect time to hit the road and what better way than with the TREK DOMANE?

74 | PowerUp | May 2016

KEY FEATURES MONUMENTAL ADVANTAGE Domane with ISO Speed has it all: blistering speed and incredible race comfort and stability, even on the summer desert landscape of Bahrain. Don’t endure. Conquer. Powering over centuriesold cobbles, charging up dizzying climbs, descending on rails for an epic win, that’s how Fabian Cancellara rides his Domane. How will you ride yours?

Trek OCLV Carbon frame lets you ride stronger for longer ISO Speed doubles compliance to conquer the roughest roads Power Transfer Construction puts all your power to the road Exceptionally stable geometry and flawless shifting The new Domane provides a wider range of compliance— the amount it moves when it encounters a bump in the road, ranging from the stiffness of the Madone, to 14% more compliance than the previous Domane.

It can be easily adjusted. Just a single bolt needs to be loosened to adjust the slider in the seat tube. It’s not a change you can make on the fly. The bolt is neatly integrated into the lower bottle cage mount. This sliding lever changes the level of compliance, from the lowest position which offers 14% more compliance than the current Domane, to the top setting, which makes it as stiff as the Emonda. The bike features a pair of seat tubes, connected via the ISO Speed decoupler with a lower bolted joint. The slider adjusts the space between the two halves of the twin seat tube, allowing the seat mast to deflect rearwards. The slider contacts both the lower seat mast tube and main frame tube to limit the fore deflection of the lower seat mast per the user’s preference. www.powerup-mag.com

FRONT ISO SPEED While the rear ISO Speed is impressive enough, the front ISO Speed acts as a decoupler that allows the steerer tube to move back and forth which results in a 10% increase in vertical compliance.

ISO CORE HANDLEBAR

Trek has also developed a new ISO Core handlebar that contributes to the front-end compliance. It has a thermoplastic elastometer integrated into the carbon fiber layup, throughout the entire handlebar, that is intended to dissipate vibrations by 20%. It does this anywhere on the handlebar, whether you’re riding in the drops or in the hoods.

DIRECT MOUNT BRAKES, DISC BRAKES, AND NEW FORK The new Domane is

FASHION & GEARS

available in rim and disc brake versions. The rim brake version moves to direct mount brake calipers, and Trek has developed a new fork for the rim brake bike that increases compliance by 7%. For the disc bike, Trek is using a fork with a 12-mm thru axle, which is increasingly looking to becoming the new brake standard. Trek is also using the flat mount standard, as most new disc brakes are these days.

EXTRA TYRE CLEARANCE

D

Trek recognizes that more people are mixing up the surfaces they’re riding. Gravel and adventure bikes are hugely popular at the moment. The direct mount brakes on the rim brake version allow 28mm tyres to be fitted, while the disc version will take 32mm tyres with mudguards fitted. It’s a road race bike that is adaptable enough to be ridden on gravel roads or rough tracks.
