BODYBUILDING

BUILDING MUSCLE AND SHAPING CHARACTER WHILE PEOPLE TEND TO CRINGE AT THE THOUGHT OF BEING ONSTAGE, LET ALONE POSING ON A STAGE AT A BODYBUILDING COMPETITION, QASIM ALSETRI ONCE WALKED IN THOSE SHOES AND IS NOW HERE TO SHARE HIS LIFE BUILDING EXPERIENCE.

W

e can all agree that muscle building is more than just some mindless activity that involves staring into the mirror. There are many positive reasons to build bigger muscles and change your physique. It is not about just building bodies but building character. Coming back to his homeland, Qasim continued his journey helping others to find their own drive, not just in fitness but in life. Known as “Big Q” in the US gyms, his journey began in 2013, when a fellow gym companion told him he should do a bodybuilding show, as he had good structure and decent muscle. At first, Big Q felt he didn’t have what it took to be a bodybuilder, nor did he have a clue over anything about stages and stepping onstage. After chancing by a poster for a local NPC Bodybuilding show, the NPC 31st Southern Classic, he took it as a sign and decided to take on the challenge. Struggling for the show without having any clue how to get to the

16

venue, sleeping at a hotel lobby due to having bank issues, things looked bleak. Regardless of these challenges, without even knowing how to apply tanning oil, he secured first place as Overall Winner, earning recognition, in spite of being a novice. A few years later and several more bodybuilding competitions, he decided to return to Bahrain to resume his journey. However this time, he plans to share his experience with aspiring bodybuilders who are plan to pursue the sport and “help them find their own journey, not just in fitness but in life.” Through 5 bodybuilding competitions in the United States, various fitness setbacks, and 8 character building years, Qasim Alsetri believes that bodybuilding is more than perfecting your body, but perfecting your mind and soul as well. The intensive training, toning, shaping of oneself takes years and patience to

TRAIN EACH MUSCLE GROUP EVERY WEEK

It has been a known fact that spending more time in the gym won’t help you achieve your body goals. You need to work each muscle group at least once every week.

LEARN THE CORRECT FORM OF EACH EXERCISE.

While you may be tempted to see how much you can lift, you need to start with lower weights and learn the right form of each exercise. 25

perfect, and without the right mindset and conditioning, the results will not be as satisfactory. Although the journey may be tough, Qasim believes “We’re not just building bodies; we’re building character in the gym. Every man needs to have a dream, every woman needs to have a dream, after all what are we living for?”

When you get to the point of using heavier weights, use a safety belt for lower back protection.

PROTEIN IS YOUR BESTFRIEND

Protein is essential when it comes to building muscle and can be found in chicken, fish, eggs, milk, dairy products and some nuts and vegetables. Most experts recommend at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight for the best results. You can add a protein shake as well.

GOALIE DREAMS

WHEN ONE TAKES A FIRST LOOK AT ABDULLA YOUSIF ZAMAN, ONE WOULDN’T EXPECT HIM TO BE ANYTHING BUT A YOUNG FOOTBALL FAN. HE MAY BE SMALL, BUT HE POSSESSES VERY BIG POTENTIAL WITH EVER BIGGER DREAMS.

If I train hard, can I be better than Buffon?

S

ix years old with a strong

attachment for football, Abdulla does not play just for fun. More than just passion, for him it’s all about training hard and learning something new. This positive ambitious attitude is what inspires him to earn his awards. Although motivated, Abdulla does not consider playing professional football for an elite club a dream. What people do not expect is that this young talent’s ambitions are to be nowhere lesser than

18

his idol Gianluigi Buffon, captain of Juventus F.C. and an exceptional goalkeeper. At a young age, Abdulla aims to be a great example to children of all ages who seek to pursue sports as a career. Travelling to Europe and earning several individual awards, he aims to motivate and encourage them to believe that with hard work and practice, anything is possible for everyone. To be a good goalkeeper, one needs confidence, focus, reaction, flexibility, and quick decision-making.

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

While these skills take years to hone, Abdulla’s coaches believe he has the talent to perfect these over time. Although only expressing interest in football just before he turned 6, he has already attained his first award, the “Best Penalty Saver” in London last August. Even though he is also a fan of boxing, his true passion is football. He may only be starting his journey, Abdulla has a bright future ahead of him and we wish him the best!

H

ow does such a tiny place, a mere island in the Arabian Gulf, attract such acclaim? In days of old, reputation spread by word of mouth, by storytelling and folklore passed on by traders, laden with goods, passing through on the silk routes between East and West. In today’s fast-paced world both little and much has changed. With word of mouth overwritten by social media; with electronic news crossing the globe in seconds. Regardless of today’s digitalized broadcasts, you cannot erase the fact that reputation is built upon shared knowledge and understanding gained through first-hand experience. Nowadays, the process is termed ‘destination marketing’ and it’s an aspect of the communication process

20

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

When you market a destination you connect with people’s perceptions and desires for adventure, for the extraordinary. that I, for one, very much enjoy. When you market a destination you connect with people’s perceptions and desires for adventure, for the extraordinary. I’m proud of the fact that my company, Vision Gulf, has played a leading role in spreading the word over the many positive aspects of Bahrain. I remember producing the first marketing material

to launch Bahrain Financial Harbour, discussing clay models with the Architects and witnessing the very foundation for Bahrain’s new Financial Centre. In Amwaj Islands, I recall my car submerged in the sand as I journeyed to photograph the vast sandbags that form the subterranean outline and shape of the islands, creating the brand for Tala Island and subsequently marketing this special destination. Now we are doing the same with Durrat Marina, constantly aiming to define the south of the country on the map. We also defined the brand and marketing for Back on the Move, the first integrated health centre in the Kingdom of Bahrain, collaborating with them to establish and launch the clinic; setting up a rich, information-driven website to educate patients on the benefits of osteopathy and well-being.

Additionally, we created the new brand for the Bahrain Triathlon Association, through Back on the Move’s triathlon support and in doing so, played a part in helping Bahrain become an internationally recognised destination for extreme competition. We’re working with people who have a vision, who are dedicated to making Bahrain the most diverse destination of choice, aiding them with the tools of modern technology and the power of instant communication: Bringing business to our shores; attracting athletes from around the world and, in doing so, creating an atmosphere where local talent will thrive and grow. FREESTYLE WRESTLING

GETTING THE GOLD! The 25th of September marked a new day for Adam Batirov, landing him his third medal in the Men’s division of Freestyle Wrestling. The Fifth edition of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games marked the triumph of Adam Batirov, freestyle wrestler and representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Held in Ashgabet, Turkmenistan, Batirov won Bahrain his third medal over the host country’s Batyr Orazgylyjow, within 48 hours of the games closing. In spite of the stiff challenge from nine other competitors representing their own nations, he prevailed over them all at the indoor arena to secure podium. After taking on Daniel Heleta of American Samoa, for his first bout, Batirov’s experience and peak form led him to his first victory. After a quick win over Zuzhen Gulomdzhon Sharipov of Tajikistan, even Saeid Dadashpourikalaei of Iran, as one of the Indoor Games’ top contenders, learned of Batirov’s strength with a 4-4 tie. Although primarily aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals and leaving with a bronze, Batirov instead sought pursuit for a gold medal and proceeded to enter his next bout against Malike Jan Sadeed of Afghanistan. Although both fought well, the bout ended with 4-0 owing to

22

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

Batirov’s technical superiority to punch his ticket into the category final. Finally at his gold medal bout, Batyr Orazgylygow faced the hopeful Adam, scoring only two points against Batirov’s four technical points. In spite of his dominance in his previous fights in the competition, Orazgylyjow was defeated through a tied two more points in the second period. This unchanged difference was ultimately what aided freestyle wrestler Batirov to

victory. Other triumphs at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games were Ali Munafaredi and Ahmed Shebeeb, taking the men’s under-77kg gold and bronze, respectively, in jiujitsu. Commenced on the 15th of Bahrain, nine athletes spearheaded Bahrain in three sports disciplines – jiujitsu, taekwondo and wrestling, and brought home bronze and gold medals, making the entire country proud.

COACHING CONUNDRUM BY JODIE CUNNAMA Coaches are the silent partners of athletic success. For every athlete crossing an elite finish line, there will be at least three of four coaches who have helped boost that performance along the way. Coaches are the directors of athletic performance yet we never see them make the billboard posters or runway presentations.

I

Coaches and teachers are no new concepts to children, but as we age we become less accustomed to observing the role of such guidance and influence. We tend to avoid structure and programming in our lives in preference to flexibility and freedom. We don’t have time to commit to a program; we can’t afford the expense of expertise; we don’t want to take it too seriously. What many, new and old athletes, tend to forget is that, like any productive

A good coach is adaptable to progress, responsive to experience and specific to circumstance relationship, coaching relationships mature and change over time. A good coach is adaptable to progress, responsive to experience and specific to circumstance. An adult beginner needs to begin with a teaching coach, just as a child would. An elite racer correspondingly needs an equally elite coach who focuses on small detail and marginal gains.

It is a selection of the right coach that is of paramount importance to enable athletic progression.

SELECT THE RIGHT COACHING ENVIRONMENT FOR YOU Beginners

I strongly believe that the first stages of triathlon are best spent in a club environment; in squad swim sessions; on social runs and in group rides. If an adult swimmer asks me how to improve their swim my first pointer is, without exception, ‘swim with a squad coach’. Local triathlon clubs are the simplest and most productive step you can take to begin to work with a coach. Although the qualification certification and the

T R I AT H L O N

experience of coaches vary immensely across clubs - triathlon club coaches are all passionate about the sport. That crucial quality emulates through the group sessions that clubs provide. Club set ups can be beneficial right up to elite level, many professionals still enjoy the club runs and swim squads interspersed with more specific sessions.

Age Group Camps

There are levels of camps for beginners, enthusiasts up to elite racers. Select realistically and they can help negotiate a decision whether to increase to the next tier of training commitment or if a club set up is adequate for you. Camps are best entered with at least a good state of general fitness level because fitness is incremental, can’t be rushed and are best built over a longer period of time. Camps are good rewards for the sustained endeavour of training and can accelerate knowledge and momentum for a limited, intense period.

Personal Coaches

Age group coaches are widely available online or locally and are advisable if you decide to take on anything more than a half IM distance seriously. Employing a coach is, in some ways, the easiest part of establishing a relationship. It is the communication, the reliability, the feedback and relationships of coaching that procure success. That feedback and communication require attention on both sides of the relationship. Deciding to employ a coach is not only a financial investment- it houses responsibility and accountability as well.

Elite Coaches

Elite Coaches know the elite game and elite training. They are highly specialized and concentrate on areas of marginal gains to already decent athletes. Nobody hiring an elite coach should be learning to swim, learning to ride or learning to run - they are honing their race skills to provide a faster result. An elite coach assigned to the right competitor can produce incredible improvement. Whilst there is progression, reward and podiums for these athletes, there is, in all probability, a higher amount of sacrifice, financial investment, risk and responsibility expected of these athletes. This is my area of expertise. At Cunnama Coaching we only do elite coaching, this is the only way I have ever been coached and the only way I know to coach. There is no limit or restriction to contact time between coach and athlete - whatever is needed to get the best from an athlete is required of both athlete and coach.

Parting Ways With Your Coach

If either side of a relationship is not fulfilling the expectations of the other then deterioration of a coaching relationship can happen quickly and catastrophically, leaving both coach and athlete angry and frustrated. Constant and immediate communication of issues is key in preventing such disintegration. Honesty and clarity are prerequisites when terminating a coaching relationship. If a coach is an athlete focused then it is possible to salvage a lasting relationship post break up, if not then that relationship potentially wasn’t worth the effort of preservation anyway.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PERSONAL COACH FOR YOU Ability

Prowess of the coach. Their qualifications or experience in the coaching should not just be ‘success’ but ‘relevance of success’ to the level of athlete. Beginners need basic principals of training, not the elite sessions. A club coach who loves the sport and helping people enter into it is probably a better coach for a beginner than a World Champion athlete or coach.

Communication potential

Different kinds of people prefer to communicate in different ways. Some like mass written communications that contain a lot of information, others like consistent sound bites to motivate them daily. Some athletes like the phone, others text message. Good coaching is intrinsically linked to good communication between athlete and coach.

Price point

Good coaches need to be paid well, as in any profession excellence is an investment and expertise should come with a price. The threshold to expense should always be set according to the importance that athletic progression plays in your life as a whole. Athlete centred coaching: Some of the most ‘acclaimed’ coaches in the world are not sufficiently athlete focused but the BEST coaches always are. If a coach has a history of short-term athlete relationships then it may indicate a problematic pattern - even if those shortterm relationships bought success.

YOGA’S ‘PINK’ CARE Most of us think of the words exercise, weight loss, toning, de-stress, breathing or spirituality with yoga, but it is so much more. With many Pink events in October to raise awareness on the women’s health, we would like to expand on prevention and attitude to breast care, and our approach to care through yoga.

B

reasts are often a source of anxiety for women, making breast health a sensitive subject that leaves them feeling embarrassed on many levels and stages in their lives. While there are noncancerous breast issues, like fibrocystic breasts, adenosis and mastitis, some of them are highly linked with getting breast cancer in the future. A safe and informed yoga practice can be beneficial for breast health. Involving more than the treatment or prevention of cancer, breast care is part of a whole system that supports overall health in women. Proper breast condition involves more than muscles and bones, as emphasis is placed on the connection

The sequencing of the practice can be also categorized by their activity level, dynamic and restorative sequence for immunity, energy. A very simple yet profound daily posture can be helpful to prevent women’s breast health, the arm posture name is ‘gomukhasana’. Sit down on to your heels, or stand with straight spine and legs. Lift up the right arm, turn the right palm facing backward and bend the right elbow, so with that your right fingers are facing towards the shoulder blades. Now lift up the left arm up to shoulder lever, turn the left palm facing upward, and now rotate the left hand backward, so with that the left fingers are going to catch your right fingers. Try to catch both hands’ fingers, and grab them into your fists. Make sure, you draw backward your right upper arm behind the ear, and you rotate backward the left shoulder also behind the left ear. Hold for few breaths and repeat to the other side, starting with the left arm.

A PIECE OF HEAVEN Born with Spina Bifida, Chef Sarah has proved to the world that you are not limited to your “weakness”. Her journey is nothing more than a stepping stone to her current success and goes to show that hardships only lie as far as your drive. The Start of a Journey

Born in the UK yet raised in Bahrain to an English mother and Bahraini father, Sarah bore witness to the opening of A Piece of Cake in 1993 by her mother. Sarah’s knowledge of baking was introduced through her English grandmother and mother, making it a pivotal part of her life. Growing up with her disability, she did not consider cooking as a career as it would be too much to stand, instead aiming for jobs that would allow her to be creative without using her legs for hours.

The Experience

From the start, a lot of people denied her talent to become a chef because of her disability, making her unable to attend a conventional culinary school. Instead, she learned the classical methods of cooking through private training with a professional French chef. Baking came naturally to her, especially after learning so much from her family, yet she felt a constant tug in her cooking side. Developing her skills and strengths, she

started her own catering creations, choosing to be different and setting herself apart from any trends or ideas.

The Blessing

Looking back, Chef Sarah never pictured the Bakery to play such a vital role in her adult life. From serving counters and developing her customer relations, to baking, she realizes that the business has played a huge blessing and responsibility in her life. Now she aims to make her mother proud and carry on the business for years to come.

The Strength

Regardless of any setbacks, Chef Sarah believes that anyone can overcome the odds with the right attitude. Without the support of her family, and the positive people around her, she believes she couldn’t have done what she has managed to do so far. As she says “I am very lucky to be living my lifelong dream. I have Spina Bifida, but it doesn’t have me.” For more information: @a_piece_of_cakebh /apieceofcakebahrain

DNA BORN AGAIN

DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA

President, Bahrain Triathlon Association and Assistant Undersecretary for Youth Authorities and Centres of Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs

LAST MONTH I TOLD YOU ALL THAT I DID A DNA TEST AND WILL WRITE ABOUT THE RESULTS IN THIS MONTH’S ISSUE. WELL, THE RESULTS ARE BACK AND A BIT SURPRISING. IF ONLY I HAD DONE THIS TEST BEFORE 2007, I MAY HAVE PREVENTED MYSELF FROM BECOMING DIABETIC. HERE IS WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT.

F

irst, the biggest news was that I am extremely lactose intolerant. For years now my loving breakfast was peanut butter sandwich and coffee, with milk. I’ve always felt bloated and uncomfortable after this breakfast but never crossed my mind that one, or more, of those ingredients was the main cause of my morning issues. Now I know that my body is not friends with milk and all its lactose sisters. I almost have milk and its lactose sisters at least three times a day! To be honest, milk is my best friend, and it hurts emotionally knowing that my best friend was causing me personal issues, life’s a brick! Another thing I found out, which is not surprising at all given my diabetes issue, is that my body reacts wildly to carbs. The yeast in bread, the wheat, and all such stuff cannot be properly and timely absorbed in my body. This means that whole wheat and

36

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

brown rice is the only thing that my body can handle. Goodbye pizza, or shall I say ciao! Obviously, no Italian genes in my body for sure! Let’s look elsewhere for good looks! Salt, and that’s a big one! I never knew how harmful salt can be, and according to my genetics, my body cannot handle more than 5 grams of salt per day. Not any salt, but sea salt. One benefit I got from Biolab here in Bahrain was knowing the big difference between the normal salt we use and sea salt. Without going into details, you need to get rid of the normal salt immediately and replace it with sea salt. Act first, read about it later. Caffeine is somewhat controversial and can work both ways, good or bad. Biolab found out that I am genetically very sensitive to caffeine, which means that anytime I consume it my body won’t be resting, but on high alert. What this means that if I want to go about a normal

I feel stronger and much healthier, and if you should ask me about my recommendation I would say that this test should be a requirement and a right for all!” day and have a fair share of rest at night, I need to stop caffeine intake at 12pm. But is there any good news from my DNA test? Well yes of course. The test doesn’t just tell you about yourself, but comes with a lot of recommendations so that you can fix what can be fixed and turn your life around. For about a month now,

I’ve tastelessly accustomed myself to my new self, I have forcefully performed a psychological operation and accepted rebirth to my knowledge about food. Yes, I know I am late to the party, but now that who I am is found on 40 plus DNA pages, there is no hiding away from this reality. I stopped drinking milk, eating cheese, mayo, and the likes. I stopped all sorts of white rice, pasta, pizza, and bread. I went from 3-4 coffee drinks a day to one in the morning with almond milk or water. And I started taking in what my body couldn’t process from food which are antioxidants and Omega 3. The results were immediate, my embarrassed belly disappeared, and my insulin intake was reduced by as much as 50%. I feel stronger and much healthier, and if you should ask me about my recommendation I would say that this test should be a requirement and a right for all!

DOES CROSSFIT MAKE WOMEN BULKY? THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRST QUESTIONS I GET ASKED WHENEVER A WOMAN WALKS INTO THE GYM AND SEES THE LIFTING BARS AND WEIGHTS ON THE FLOOR. LIKE CLOCKWORK, IF I TELL HER IT WON’T HAPPEN, SHE POPS OUT HER PHONE AND SHOWS ME A PHOTO OF A PROFESSIONAL CROSSFIT ATHLETE ON INSTAGRAM. BY NOW, I CAN SEE THE FEAR CREEP INTO HER EYES.

F

irstly, it’s not CrossFit that women are scared of, it’s the weight training associated with it. Athletes usually seen on social media platforms do not portray the average Joeane you would see in a gym. Those ladies train, eat and repeat to look the way they do, because those are Individual specific goals they set out for themselves. Muscle growth comes from repeated, heavy weight training and this in turn makes you stronger. While this strength tends

to bulk you up and look muscular, for most women, this is not true. Itwould multiple hours of pure weight training with extreme weights, and incredible nutritional changes to finally get those results. This includes eating for that specific goal, and taking external, specific supplementation like Creatine, steroids etc. to improve performance and growth. While gym weights will sometimes feel heavy, you can pick up a weight heavier than 4kg without looking like a man. Picking

up these weights once or twice or 10 times a session will not make you bulk up. What it can do is boost your metabolism, kick start the fat burning process of the body, tone and strengthen the muscles and make you look as sexy as ever. As we all know by now, winter is coming, and what better time to go to the beach with our new toned strong bodies, than in the winter. MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

CHAMPIONS ARE NOT BORN, THEY’RE MADE Similar to MMA fighters, it takes a lot to physically and mentally condition oneself to participate and compete with the best. Even the most-renowned of fighters began in adversity. With this mindset, the Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation (BBMAF) is seeking to encourage all sports enthusiasts to take their first steps into the challenging world of MMA.

urrently the fastest growing sport in the world, Mixed Martial Arts is now paving the way for active youths in the Kingdom. President of the BMMAF, Colonel Khalid Abdulaziz Al Khayat aims to give us a better idea on the sport that has sparked the nation.

Professional fighters are prohibited in the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF), instead seeking beginners open to being trained into professional recognition. The Colonel has been garnering efforts to promote a more Islamic way of fighting to the President of the IMMAF, Kerrith Brown, in the hopes of encouraging women all over the GCC to participate.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Under criteria announcement in local championships, fighters are selected one month prior to the event. Coaches known as the technical committee make their selection, with the first being the Bahrain Open and Martial Arts and Boxing Championship 2017 set on April. The combat level of the fighters reflected the high level of professionalism they have and their high combat capabilities.”

MEDALS ATTAINED

The BMMAF kicked off the year at the IMMAF European Open on the 29th of April, with Hussain Abdulla securing Bronze. This was followed by another Bronze in Singapore at the IMMAF Asian Open, along with 2 more Bronze from

Nayef Fikey and Abbas Khan. Hamza Zrira placed for Gold at the recent Africa Open, with Abdulla and Fikey attaining Silver, making a total count of 1 Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze this year so far.

Nearly every UFC fighter has some boxing training in order to develop their striking and defensive skills, with some techniques been specially modified for use in MMA.

Originating in Thailand, Muay Thai focuses on both striking and clinching techniques. It’s popular with MMA fighters because the style teaches fighters to throw elbow and knee strikes with enough force to cut or even knock out their opponent.

DRAMATIC CHANGE WITH SONATA FACELIFT

All panels forwards of the front windscreen are new, as are the trunk lid, rear bumper, and the sills below the doors. Such extensive changes to some of the most noticeable parts of the car will ensure the Sonata’s styling makes a clear break with the car it replaces, despite retaining the same main body structure. “The refreshed design for the Sonata is very different from the car it replaces, and goes far beyond the

few small cosmetic changes people normally expect for a facelift model,” said Hyundai’s Head of Operations for Africa and the Middle East, Mike Song. “The appearance from both the front and rear is completely new, with clever detail changes to the exterior trim along the side of the car making a subtle difference to the car’s side profile. The body looks longer, wider, and sportier than before.”

Soon after the crash by Habibullah at Moto 2, Trakarn sped and challenged Lewis for the top spot, but it was Lewis that out-shined the 2015 overall champion for a solid win at the opening round. Meanwhile, Habibullah’s Malaysian counterpart, Khairi Zakaria also faced multiple challenges when Netherlands’

Marcel Van Drunen targeted him as the opponent on track. Other notable riders will be Indonesia’s Farhan Hendro and Philippines’ Kenneth San Andres. Both riders had a slow start during the free practice session on Friday and Saturday morning, but they unleashed their skills during Moto 1 and Moto 2, making them the most promising riders this SuperMoto season.

Hyundai launched its refreshed Sonata mid-sized sedan in Africa and the Middle East. New sheet-metal and trim details will bring the currentgeneration Sonata into line with the Hyundai’s evolving design language, which is progressively introducing more sophisticated architecture and styling to the brand.

The Thai community and families across the world flocked to the circuit over the race weekend to see the beginning of another fantastic Asia SuperMoto season with 17 riders from 13 countries competing for standing points and the championship title. reason

Window tinting comes in a wide range of shading to provide a level of privacy for you and your passengers as you go down the road. When you park the car, you can walk away and know that prying eyes cannot see your valuables inside.

FADE REDUCTION

Your car is a valuable asset that you want to last as long as possible. Having window tinting professionally installed on your vehicle is a great way to protect your investment. Here in Bahrain, the sun

can beat down on one’s car, penetrating your windows and diversely affecting your cars Interior. Window film blocks harsh sunshine that can fade upholstery and discolour leather and vinyl. It protects car interiors from cracking and warping to keep your car looking newer longer. Window tinting also blocks windshield glare to decrease eye fatigue from direct sun and bright nighttime headlights.

UV RAYS BLOCKAGE

Car window tinting can block up to 99%

of the suns harmful ultraviolet rays that can accelerate skin ageing and cause skin cancer. Even clear window film or a light tint can block out both damaging UVA and UVB rays.

KEEPING COOL

If you’ve battled finding the right level of air conditioning for all of your passengers, window tinting can help resolve that dilemma. Depending on the grade, window film can block anywhere from 35-65% of the solar heat that builds up in a car. You can

The safety benefits of installing window film on your car cannot be underestimated. Window film is designed to keep the glass from shattering if an object hits it. In the event of a car accident, passengers are protected from flying shards and from being ejected through windows. Additionally, thieves will find it

difficult to break through tinted glass and get into your car. At Hi-End Automotives, professionals only use the top of the line Window Film: XDS Security Film and American Standard Window Film. THE DARK SIDE OF DENTISTRY If you thought going to the dentist wasn’t terrifying enough, paying and leaving with subpar service could leave you with more than just sore teeth. Luckily, we will be covering those warning signs that you should be wary of, to ensure that you get the right oral care.

N

owadays, the dental industry is booming with all these limited time offers on different services across the country. While most of them will ensure you of their quality, it takes a keen eye and good observation to know if this clinic is really worth your money and time.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

While this may seem a lot of work, you need to contemplate that this is your dental health on the line. Chances are if the clinic you’re pursuing has negative feedback, they probably have it for a reason.

ENSURE YOUR DOCTOR IS CERTIFIED

Not all dental practices may display their certificates flamboyantly in a public hall-of-fame. However if asked to present any certification or licenses, they wouldn’t be withholding such information from their own patients.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Although the most affordable service is tempting, you shouldn’t have to settle on less for your own dental health. Similarly, you wouldn’t choose a fake watch over one with a household name. Similarly, your health should be on equal, if not higher priority as well.

HYGIENE. HYGIENE. HYGIENE.

You wouldn’t want to see your dentist digging through drawers then poking inside your mouth with no gloves. Pay attention to their hygiene and their tools to ensure theircleanliness especially when examining you.

BEWARE OF OVEREXTENSIVE WORK

If your new dentist suddenly says you have all these new concerns that haven’t been noticed before, don’t panic. While there is a chance your previous dentist may have overseen something, it is

unlikely to suddenly develop all these mysterious issues instantly. If you are in doubt, have a second opinion before doing anything rash.

DON’T BE OPEN TO “EXTRAS”

A good dentist, after your first consultation, will give you a step-by-step arrangement on what your teeth require, how they will be prepared and how they will progress over time. This fixed plan will not change every few months and require added treatment plans to your seemingly growing oral problems. Although you should exercise caution, there is no need to be overprotective. Awareness is the most important factor here. Keep in mind, though it may seem that the better offer may propose the best chance for your teeth, there is no substitute for good dental care. CARDIO CARE EVERYWHERE In the last couple of years, 34.9% of all death cases in the region were due to cardiovascular (CVD) diseases. With hear t attacks and strokes acting as leading killers among Arab women, Majid Al Futtaim has directed effor ts into spreading awareness to women through their “Feel the Beat” campaign.

Set on the 29th to 30th of September, Majid al Futtaim hosted a heart health testing for women at Bahrain City Center’s gallery, just in time for World Heart Day! With the assumption that cardiovascular diseases are mostly found in men, “Feel the Beat” seeks to spread awareness in the region that this disease is not uncommon for women as well. Through this campaign, the objective is to provide women with the knowledge and tools to take charge of their own heart health. Through the aid of doctors and nurses on site, visitors were able to get their blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if they

56

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

were at risk for heart diseases. The presence of a new “Doctor Consultation Counter” provided complimentary onsite consultations as well as check-ups with physicians. CPR demonstrations were also performed, and all this was made possible thanks to the Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Sulman Al Khalifa Cardiac Centre. Majid Al Futtaim has chosen shopping malls to be the pivotal point of their event, as they prefer to engage with the local community to support local humanitarian and charitable causes. With shopping malls located in prime residential or commercial areas, they find them to be an ideal platform to reach out to women in a comfortable atmosphere for testing. As Majid Al Futtaim’s leading Corporate Social Responsibility policy, they believe in the promotion of wellbeing as essential to building flourishing

communities. It is with this conviction that they find an urgency to address the issues contributing to heart risks, such as lack of fitness, obesity, diabetes as well as other related health issues. Not limited to the event, everyone can still follow the campaign to learn more about CVD through visiting the mall’s website and social media through the hashtags #signwithyourheart and #FeeltheBeat.

NUTRITION

OPTIMISING YOUR HEALTH Let’s talk about Supplements

Dietary supplements are an extremely hot topic and a highly debatable one. With the number of powders and potions in the market, it can be tricky to decipher between health and hype. Grade A Nutrition enlightens us on why we should consider taking nutritional supplements to improve the quality of health and life.

S

upplements are for everyone. That’s right! Everyone needs a balanced protein in their diet. The reality is, even when we’re very conscientious about eating a well balanced diet, we can often fall short of the mark nutritionally. Supplements then help your body utilize the nutrients in the food for better body function.

PROTEIN FACTS

Protein is a macro nutrient that your body needs to survive. It builds muscle and repair damaged organs

and tissues. The human body unfortunately can’t produce its own protein which is the main reason why people need it from an outside source.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Many nutritional supplements have been proven to prevent or aid in the treatment of health conditions like high cholesterol, arthritis, birth defects, and cancer. Supplements are products that can come in many forms. They serve as a way to boost performance. Unlike actual foods, they contain minimal calories to none. Supplements act as

extra workers for the human body in order to help with recovery, performance and injury prevention. Supplements utilize the nutrients from the foods we digest to build muscles Supplements are fat burners. Fat burners only work, when you put your body in fat burning mode. The supplements then help in turning the body into burning more fat per workout session. Supplements do not replace real food or real exercise. HEALTHY EATING IS IN

A healthy eating plan will encourage you to drown out the fad diet so you can feel confident in your ability to lose weight for good. Educate yourself about food and make healthy eating choices as the Protein Kitchen shares with us the fundamentals.

H

ealthy eating is a consumption of variety of foods which will provide nutrients to maintain your daily body requirement. We all know that vitamin supplements are no substitute for a healthy diet, but nobody's perfect when it comes to healthy eating. It can be particularly challenging to get the nutrients you need if you're dieting and avoiding animal or dairy products. This makes multivitamin a nutritional insurance. Research suggests that multivitamins may not be all they've cracked up to be. Moreover, many multivitamins contain micronutrients in amounts in excess of those recommended. In some cases, these levels may result in unsafe

60

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

intakes. These findings raise questions about the use of multivitamins as a safety net. Experts agree that the best way to get the nutrients we need is through food. A balanced diet, one containing plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains offers a mix of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that collectively meet the body's needs. What counts is the synergistic interactions of these nutrients which will help explain why trials of single nutrients often don't pan out. WELLNESS

WHAT ARE YOUR HUNGRY FOR?

It starts in your head before it reaches your body

M

any of us, including myself before, upon thinking about dieting we always think from neck down. Every morning we weigh ourselves on that scale and look in the mirror looking for improvements in our bodies, sticking to diet and training plans until we feel exhausted. At that moment we reach a peak point, that threshold where we tell ourselves: “That’s it! I can’t take it anymore.”We don’t want to experience the pain, but we regret it later. While already in pain, why not get a reward for it? We know the phrase, yet we hit a wall and quit. What is wrong here?

62

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2017

The answer is actually simple. As I mentioned earlier that we always think from neck down, we over-focus on our bodies. We start our diet and training without eliminating all these fears and insecurities, and false images of ourselves instead of focusing on our target goal. I can’t sleep today as Mohammed and wake up tomorrow as Richard or anybody else! You must plan for it, and planning starts in your head, not just in a piece of paper or instruction to apply on your body the next morning. You have to ask yourself, are you ready for this? What obstacles would you face in your way to reach your goal? Is your goal realistic? What will you do if your

plan doesn’t work? How can I change the way I think towards food and exercise? Our brain wants us to survive, so it will never let you take the hard way, never put yourself under pressure, never change your way of thinking. That is how you must get yourself started, get your brain out of its comfort zone, change the way you think because it always starts above your neck, if you change what is in your head, your body will follow. Visualize the finished result, keep yourself motivated, and always keep yourself focused! The more you focus on your thoughts the more you control the outcomes! for high impact sustainable projects and fitness. With this target in mind, it elaborates why they have chosen cycling to promote Think Pink. Approached by the Bahrain Merida Team in January, they have been working together to showcase their unique events. From the Charity’s standpoint, it is a way of addressing a different group of people whom they have not been in contact with before, to spread their awareness goal. Since 2006, Think Pink is

the only Charity to have Bahraini Brand Ambassadors from a wide array of fields, with their current team being the first all-female endurance riders from the Muharraq Riding School. With a concise goal, the team works yearly on a plan and work to achieve their target, setting their movement around that. Their last milestone was the donation of a BD 499,900 digital MRI to Salmaniya Medical Complex, taking four years to accomplish, but

Serving as a pledge, this inclusive movement highlights the fact that early detection saves lives and that together we can all make a difference. It is a strong statement declaring that we can and will be proactive over our own health through educating ourselves and others. This very pledge was incorporated into their unisex logo to emphasize that men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. The 2013 artwork was so powerful and based on regional search of empowering

Never shying away from a difficult project, Think Pink constantly finds a path, through their own research, to constantly better benefit the community and spread awareness throughout the Kingdom. ONE PINK LINK THINKS PINK Recognized for the success of Project Grace 10/6 and her active woman empowerment efforts, Noora Jaber Al Muhanna is taking grand efforts to stay true to her conviction for the fourth time in a row.

I

n its fourth initiative, the Breast Cancer Charity Event – One Pink Link, organized by Al Muhanna, will take place this October, the Pink Month. In 2013, One Pink Link was held in a university campus to spread awareness to all students and faculty on the disease. Professors and doctors attended the event and held seminars in regards to the topic, and all sales proceeds from merchandise were contributed to Think Pink Bahrain. Keen to hold this humanitarian event to spread awareness in Bahrain, Noora collaborated with the Bahrain Free Labor U n i o n Fe d e r a t i o n (BFLUFBH) and Saar Mall management to host it. Held under the patronage of Ms. Afnan Al Zayani, half of the income from sponsors and earnings sold at the event and were given to both Think Pink and the Bahrain Cancer Society. With the success of its preceding year,

66

the Charity Event was taken even further in 2016, now under the patronage of Former Minister Dr. Fatima Al Balushi. Unlike the previous events, real life breast cancer survivors attended to expand on their journeys. A presentation was shared discussing early detection by a doctor from the Bahrain Cancer society, and additionally, various women societies participated in the event as well, defining its continuing growth. To be organized this year as well for the Pink Month, Noora plans to expand further by bringing youth societies into the picture, as she believes their roles are very important in today’s society. Societies and hospitals will be asked to participate, along with fitness and gyms. Marketing campaigns are targeted to be more effectively utilized to spread awareness to a larger audience, as Noora claims, “All of us in this society are obliged to help women standup, get cured and get empowered in all forms of life.”

She might be our mother, sister, grandmother, aunt or maybe unknown to us but after all she is a ‘Woman’.
