FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities.

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is

In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing

such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to

“HEALTH IS A LIFESTYLE AND I CHOSE IT.” HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa

raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks

and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

FITNESS

IT’S PRIME TIME FIT AND FORTY

Once you hit 40, things just don’t work the same way they did when you were 25. Your body starts to become creaky, your muscles take longer to recover, and your aerobic conditioning and muscle power start to take a dip. But does that mean you should slow down in the gym? Not at all! No one is ever too old to be in great shape. Don’t think it’s possible? Think again.

TIPS TO BE IN TIP-TOP SHAPE Do one to two extra warm-up sets to help loosen tissues that stiffen with age. You’ll pump more blood into the muscles you’re training. Be realistic about your capabilities. If you’ve never squatted 400 pounds and have back or knee pain, don’t set a 400-pound squat as a goal. Do 20–25 repetitions on a lift. If you don’t feel it in the muscles you want, change the move until you do.

T

hrough sheer willpower, determination, and a whole lot of discipline, getting ripped and carving out a sculpted body even in your 40’s is an incredibly rewarding experience. What you gain from the process of transforming your physique over the age of 40 is something that you would have never fully appreciated

in your youth. Ismaeel a.k.a Taz pulverized the last 30 pounds of fat from his physique through Smart Body 12-week body transformation regimen. While it is not easy, Taz is helped by the support system at SmartBody. The key is to establish a routine that you will stick to, no matter what. Routine builds discipline. You may not figure it all out in the beginning, but things will start to roll nicely once adrenaline

kicks in. You too can design your best shape and form no matter how far back you have come. Taz has these words of inspiration to get you on your feet: “ To everyone out there who’s over 40, remember, it ain’t over till it’s over. We just need to stay on course and keep our focus.” For more information: Smart Body Fitness Centre Tubli Tel: +973 36 006 779 @smartbodyfc

Ahmed ‘The Butcher’ Amir is one of the emerging athletes from the iddle ast scoring two victories out of his two appearances at Brave Combat Federation. Ahmed has been victorious in five out of his si professional fights and is currently on a five fight winning strea . ust li e any other athlete he is very particular when it is about the food. But he prefers to handle his diet the way he prefers in a way to deliver the results he is loo ing for.

ON PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Training is an integral part of the career of any athlete. Food is the fuel for the body and ta ing the right food optimises our performance and gives the results that we are loo ing for. Apart from being a professional fighter, he is also a trainer. When it comes to training, he does not eat three hours before training. However, he replenishes his body with supplements. He treats his body as a storage space that needs to be constantly replenished. Storing the right amount of carbohydrates supports his body and prepares it for training. Apart from the food you ta e, your state of mind also has a salient impact on your body. You have to believe in yourself and give yourself mental support. In the morning, Amir loves to train outside and give his body and mind time to be with nature. How you condition your body also have an impact on the food you eat. ven if you ta e the right food, if your mind is stressed and confused, the results could be different.

WELLNESS

YOU MIGHT BE DOING IT WRONG:

SUNSCREEN APPLICATION Most of us aren’t using sunscreen the way that we should! Surprised? You may think you’ve already mastered sun protection, but think again. Most people tend to apply sunscreen only on areas that they assume would get the most sun exposure. This puts them at a sure risk for different types of skin cancer. Now we need to do better than that!

R

esearchers at the University of Liverpool conducted a study on misapplication of sunscreen and consequent vulnerability to skin cancer. Three-quarters of participants, when prompted to apply sunscreen on their face but given no other instructions, did not coat the bridge of their nose or corners of their eyes and over 10 percent didn’t apply sunscreen to their eyelids. With up to 10 percent of malignant skin cancer beginning around the eyelids, it is of extreme importance that this part of the body does not get missed when applying SPF protection. It makes one wonder, why don’t people do it? Caution surrounding accidentally getting the product into our eyes—often as warned on the back of product labels—leads

18

POWERUP | SEPTEMBER 2017

many to miss protecting some of the most delicate skin on our face.

KNIGHT IN SILICONE ARMOUR

FOREO has responded to recent findings regarding improper sunscreen application just in time for summer when beaches are pulling everyone to their sunny shores. When packing the bathing suit, sunscreen and picnic basket, FOREO IRIS will complete your sunscreen routine. As the study discovered, protecting the s in may be the first instinct when the sun’s rays touch the surface of our body but very often, the delicate skin around the eyes are being neglected. Beat the effect of negative sun rays by carrying the IRIS to the beach and look forward to a future of protected eyes. The T-sonic pulsations of

HIP FLEXORS

Tight hips flexors can restrict your range of motion limiting the ground you cover on the court and can eventually lead to low back pain

HAMSTRINGS

These muscles work in conjunction with your quads and aid in stabilization power production.

CALVES

Overuse of the calf muscles when jumping to block or spike can cause tightness in the calves which can lead to foot pain such as plantar facilities and Achilles tendonitis.

GLUTES

These muscles can easily get tight due to a large amount of side to side movement and constantly be in a squat position during volleyball.

YOGA

GOING WITH THE FLOW STAND UP PADDLE (SUP) YOGA

Yoga means “union” and is really about bringing health to the body, peace to the mind, joy in the heart, and eventually liberation to the soul. It is not a religion despite what some may think. It’s not about the perfect body. It’s about uniting breath with body, mind with muscles, and most importantly self with the divine. Internationally, yoga is taking on a life of its own weaving its way into Instagram, YouTube, pet resorts, and even on the water. Yes, water!

Never be afraid to try something new. Life is meant to be lived, not feared.

S

tand Up Paddle Board Yoga, a.k.a SUP Yoga, or just “SUPY” is the new international water sport cra e that is even finding a home in the aqua blue waters of Bahrain, thanks to Beach ulture, ahrain s first natural water sports center. SUP Yoga includes practicing yoga postures (called “asana”) on a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) board, a very long and extra wide surfboard. Sounds insane, maybe even impossible, but Haunani Drake, Bahrain’s very first certified oga instructor assures everyone, “If you can breathe and have an appreciation for the water, you can explore movement

on the board.” Physically, SUP Yoga is a full body workout that also helps to improve your proprioception and balance. Proprioception is the unconscious perception of movement and spatial orientation arising from stimuli within the body itself. Mentally, it improves concentration and thanks to the guided relaxation at the end of the session, it is very relaxing for the mind. Like conventional yoga, SUP Yoga is not easy for everyone but as Haunani points out, “Never be afraid to try something new. Life is meant to be lived, not feared.” SUP Yoga merges inward

Water is also a symbol of the dynamism of nature; of the rhythm of life. It is the best place to surrender control and move with the ow. oing yoga on a water surface makes up for a powerful meditative encounter. TRIATHLON ON THE RISE

JODIE CUNNAMA REFLECTS ON THE RISE OF TRIATHLON IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, HOW THE KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN IS EXPERIENCING SIMILAR GROWTH AND HOW ANYONE CAN GET INVOLVED.

riathlon is the fastest growing participation sport in Britain with new people from other sports switching allegiances every month. Most of them bring knowledge and experience from other areas of fitness some may even be e perts in their field with advanced training in running or swimming. f you are generally fit, you are already on a front footing on the triathlon conversion path. ven so, it s a little overwhelming moving from single sport training or going down the gym to embar ing on training, entering and completing a triathlon race.

T

WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?

Follow the ideas below to quickly complete the transition and become a triathlete.

GET HEALTHY

Triathlon is an endurance sport. A healthy and strong cardiovascular system is the key in all three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running. If you eat right and sleep well, training will be a lot easier.

BEGINNING SWIMMING

If swimming is completely new then the first step to ta e is to book an adult course of swim lessons at your local pool. on t for out for expensive technical advice to start with. You need to be capable of completing the race distance first. I would strongly recommend that all beginners swim with a club. Swimming alone is hard enough for a professional, let alone a beginner who will need more

stroke guidance and technical advice. Joining a triathlon club, or a masters swim club, challenges your perceptions of swimming training and demonstrates how swimmers use sets and clocks to monitor and break up their metres Too many age group athletes simply get in and swim lengths . n years of competitive swimming I have NEVER done this. I A A follow a warm up, a main set and a warm down structure. Setting these sets is down to experience and if you do not have a personal coach then a club is the best way to get this. Swim clinics can address technical issues and suggest drills that can be translated into your weekly sessions.

GET ON YOUR BIKE

Cycling is proportionally the largest sector of triathlon and as such leaves opportunity for large time improvements to be made with simple practices. Begin with 60-minute rides. An hour will seem fairly hard work to begin with as getting to grips with traffic, negotiating corners and skill work adds stress. Spin the pedals around as fast as possible whilst ic ing through your gears and establishing a relationship between power and cadence. Wearing the proper gear and riding at the correct

times will help your cycling confidence. ycling in heavy traffic is not a lot of fun and being cold is even less fun. I would suggest you get hold of some cycling cleats as soon as you begin cycling. Practice with these before you join a cycle group because clipping in and out can cause a bit of trouble in a group. t s also good to get to know the local surroundings and so if you ever have a problem on a group ride you can get home.

Beginners Essential Equipment • Healthy bike • Helmet • Cleats and cycle shoes

Glasses Overshoes Gloves Expensive tri-geek equipment

‘RUN, RUN’

Running is a more simple discipline to undertake. We all have running experience and most of us have run at school or in the gym. The most effective way to get into running is to run for short periods every day and build 10 minutes each week. Once you have reached an hour, after si wee s on the premise of beginning with minutes , then it is time to start to building in intervals

into your running and begin to look at your technique more specifically. Delay technical advice until the end of this period because your running technique will alter with changing fitness levels and weight levels. Seek technical advice from a run specialist that uses drills and strength work to combat biomechanical issues and ma imise run efficiency. As a new runner, it is invaluable to limit any injury risks before heavier mileage is embarked upon.

Beginner’s Essential Equipment • Good trainers • Watch

Second Season Essentials • Glasses • Pulse rate monitor many other tri-geek gadgets!!

JOIN A TRIATHLON OR CYCLE CLUB

Joining a triathlon club has many benefits. Apart from the obvious organised sessions for swimming, cycling and running, a good club will offer social, sport and family support. Partners and children can become more involved with this weird, addictive, obsessive world that mummy or daddy has got themselves into! Triathlon clubs are little

alancing swim, cycle and run programmes are bewildering even for accomplished athletes. raining properly for three sports is a full time commitment but with a balanced perspective and good time investment, maximum gains can be made with minimum time commitment. All three sports do not need equal coverage. In initial construction of a program, it is good to work on the principal of majority gain. The construction needs to be a focused on developing the wea area. f you are new to swimming, then plenty of time needs to be dedicated to the technical aspects of swimming and this will in turn have large benefits to triathlon performance for you. hen an activity is new, neural pathways are weak and regular participation will trigger their development. You need to be reestablishing these pathways at least three times per week. Less time needs to be devoted to running or biking during this period. Once technical competence has been established the progression in swimming will plateau and time spent on swimming can be cut and utilised on one or both running and/or cycling.

ENTER YOUR FIRST RACE

Most triathlon clubs hold aquathlons or minitriathlons for their members and these are excellent starting blocks for you to combine the hard training you have been putting in.

Look around locally for a full distance race and just go for it. Keep an eye on an experienced club member who can help you out with the orientation and procedures specific to that race. on t see you first triathlon as a test but as an experiment. plit up the disciplines, concentrate on each stage separately and you will be surprised just how self explanatory triathlon really is.

GET A COACH

When you have decided you are a ‘triathlete then consider getting yourself a triathlon coach. You can do this online. In order to select the right kind of coach with compatible philosophies you need to understand your own talents, motivations and goals. Take time in learning the basics of the sport. Investment in a chosen coach will pay higher dividends. Many runners worry that they are not spending enough time running in their triathlon program because the run mileage seems

A healthy and strong cardiovascular system is the key in all three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running. relatively low. elieve me, if you once ran 34 minutes for 10 kilometres you will almost definitely always be able to run 38 minutes in good physical shape. Have faith in this ability and allow strong disciplines to tick over as you establish a stronger background in weaker ones. Strengths will improve back to maximum very quickly.

NO EXCUSES, JUST WORKOUT IT’S NOT ABOUT FINDING TIME, IT’S ABOUT FEELING MOTIVATED.

There are people who take care of their bodies, and there are people who don’t. Both have jobs, families and busy lives but only the latter use these things as an excuse. The lack of motivation can have many factors - a lack of enjoyment, insecurity, selfdestructive thoughts, negative

associations, fear, low self-esteem, to name a few. We can find time for television, social media, fighting with our spouse, playing games, or even Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) household tas s, but we find it difficult to ma e time for our health.

DECIDE TO GET FIT

We never want to think about blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes. So we

ignore what our bodies are telling us. But eventually, as we grow up and enter our 30’s and 40’s, it becomes harder to ignore the signs. Usually this shift in lifestyle happens only after a serious health incident like a heart attack and that breaks my heart. If people decide to get fit before these incidents then they greatly increase their chances for a healthy, long and happy life!

KETTLEBELL TRAINING

RING IN THE BODY-BUILDING BELLS You hear the word Kettlebell and you might think it is some kind of a friendly kitchen tool. User-friendly, yes, but it is nowhere in your kitchen. The gym is more like it. A kettlebell is a black cannonball with a cast-iron handle – a powerful workout tool for explosive strength and muscular endurance training. Let’s have you meet your new body-building buddy.

DOES THE NAME RING A BELL?

The word Girevik means strongman in Russian dictionaries and it gave origin to the word Giri which is a Russian word for kettlebell. Kettlebells are different than traditional dumbbells in that the center of mass is extended beyond the hand allowing ballistic, swing and release movements. They build strength on your grip, wrist, arm and core. A ettlebell was first used in astern urope as a counter weight on a scale that weighed crops. It then transitioned into being used by circus strongmen in the 19th Century. The birth of competitive kettlebell lifting dates back

32

to 1885. It somehow started to be used as a tool for exercise. Folklore has it that farmers at the end of the day would swing, toss and juggle these weights for fun and exercise. Kettlebells are low-cost, durable and easy-to-use tools that can be used individually or in groups with low risk of injury when done with the proper technique. Mind you, kettlebells are not magic on their own. They are just big lumps of hard cast iron but incorporating them in an e ercise program yields benefits hitting strength conditioning and cardiovascular workout. There, too, are the array of

Up Close And Personal Hiring a Personal Trainer (PT) is an investment that can change your body. Hiring a knowledgeable, experienced and passionate PT can literally CHANGE YOUR LIFE. Find out how you can benefit, and learn how to get the best for your bucks…

Top tips Share sessions with a friend who’s of a similar standard to you, and has similar goals, because it could reduce the cost. Arriving late for your session is a waste of your money – every second counts. A good trainer will have planned a full session. If you arrive late, you are going to be missing something that could be important. Listen to what you are being told and if you don’t understand, ask. Do the homework you are set. If your trainer recommends you do three mobilisations a day that take one minute each, DO IT. Ask for help with your diet. Your program may be complimented by a particular way of eating. You do not want to be missing out on some additional advice. Trust us a must when it comes to your relationship with your PT. Find someone you like, trust and can relate to. Don’t ever be embarrassed to talk with your trainer about your concerns.

t the end of a long day, just the thought of having to workout may be enough to send you scurrying to your sofa. After all, does it really matter if you’ve got a sixpack?! But with diabetes a real and present danger to many in Bahrain, and other lifestyle-related health complications on the rise, making your health and fitness a priority should really be at the top of your daily agenda. For a lot of people, this is where Personal Trainers and Wellness Coaches come in.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PERSONAL TRAINER – THE ESSENTIALS Qualifications

A Level 3 PT Diploma is considered to be the minimum training required to safely execute a gym session. ot all gyms hire ualified PTs, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Experience

Look for a trainer that has worked with someone similar to you before. If you’re looking to recover from a nee in ury, find someone who is experienced with exercise rehabilitation programs, for example.

Passion If your PT is more interested at looking at himself in the mirror than at you, it’s time to find someone who is focused on your success.

Recommendations Find a PT who has a reputation you will be proud to be a part of.

Good Facilites Or Equipment

What you need in terms of equipment, will vary depending on your goals. Sign up with a PT that has the right equipment, or facility, for you. Visit different gyms before you commit.

Reliability

Your PT should motivate and guide you, so if they

regularly cancel or change your session times, it can be extremely frustrating. The same applies to lateness.

Knowledge

ealth and fitness is a fine balance of managing high stress levels, hormones, energy levels, self confidence swings, digestive system problems and injury. Your PT should understand that your health is more complex than calories in, calories out.

Unique Exercise Programs

You’re not identical to the person standing next to you. In fact, you’re completely unique. So shouldn’t your training program be, too?

Intelligent Programming

A talented trainer will show

you exercises that are the best for your posture, goal and ability. Those that want to eep your business will find a way to make workouts varied and rewarding.

Health Assessment

Without a full assessment before you start, how can you possibly know how far you’ve progressed? It’s vital for your PT to check your medical history before agreeing to train you. If this doesn’t happen, don’t be afraid to run away! For more information: HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 17 775 544 Mob: +973 39 772 100 @hvholistic hvholisitichealth.com

adies and Gentlemen, the future is here. Something great awaits us all in formative sports performance, DNA which candetermine athletic ability. When I was in school, I used to watch that amazing 1987 movie (Double Helix). It’s about discovering how DNA really looks like. Since then, I have been fascinated about the secrets of DNA. Just like our fingerprints, DNA is like a unique passport. Everybody has their own unique genetic makeup. Having studied abroad, I had to take Biology classes which greatly increased my fascination human’s genetic details. If we only knew how to crack the code! Well, YES WE DO. PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF HARALD MORSCHER: Hi I am Harald. I

am Austrian and one of the Sports Directors of Team Bahrain Merida. I started Cycling when I was 8 years old and has been a pro rider in several teams from 1998 to 2009.

ALES MURN: I’m Ales, Team Bahrain Merida’s Physiotherapist from Slovenia. ALEN TOMIC: Alen omi , your boy next door bus driver

MASSIMO DEMARIN: Hi I am Massimo and I’m in Team Mechanics from Croatia.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKING ON A REGULAR DAY JOB AND WORKING FOR A PRESTIGIOUS PROFESSIONAL CYCLING TEAM? HM: On the one hand you can sometimes do your own time table, something which you cannot do in a normal job. On the other hand, you are always “on line” or on call which means that during the season, you will have to face no weekends and no holidays whenever the job calls. AM: Big difference. I work almost all day

from morning to night. here are no fi ed hours like regular jobs. All day you have something to do. In the end if you like it, then no problem. There are plenty of things to do like prepare bags for the riders; stuff which does not run on a set schedule.

AT: I have never worked as a bus driver

outside the cycling circuit but I guess they drive on the same route whereas in cycling there are always new roads, new exciting places.

MD: The difference is that the range of

the job I am doing in the cycling team is wider. The amount of work is bigger and we move from hotel to hotel every single day. It is like an adventure.

race. Of course to watch them win is such a big payback.

AT: I like the feeling when the riders

MD: Nothing much. Oh, I don’t like the rain but of course that is not cycling’s fault!

WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY LIKE? HM: Breakfast with my colleagues. Then off to finishing the presentation of the stage/race for the riders. I pack my suitcase. I go by car or bus to the start. Then we meet and brief the riders. Of course I have got to have one Italian Espresso before the start. I follow the race in the car and give the riders instructions and support during the race. Then I go back to the hotel by car or bus. During the ride, Iam updated by

my colleagues on how the race is going. Even while the race is on, I am already planning the course for the next day for riders and staff. I make visits to each rider and masseur in the room. Then I do the necessary checks to make sure all goes right with the bikes at the mechanics. We cap the day with dinner and a chat with staff afterwards.

AM: I prepare box for the feed zone.

Prepare lunch for the staff and riders. Help the riders in the bus with anything before the start of the race. Feed zone to give the box. Off to the hotel at the end of the day to rest and prepare for the next day.

After finish cleaning the inside of the bus, fill up the reserves in the bus. I also check the navigation; prepare the radios for the race, etc. When the race begins, so does the other stuff I need to do to prepare for after the race. At the hotel, you could say I do a bit of “housekeeping” such as washing towels, ta ing out trash, filling the fridge, readying coffee, dry fruits and nuts, cleaning the showers, toilet, seats, ooring etc., charging the radios. m like a handyman.

MD: We wake up very early, have

breakfast, prepare the bikes to the race, go to hotels, set up the bikes, talk to riders if they need anything special,

We kept driving and after 10-15 min we were worried since we didn’t see Tsgabu come back to the peloton. I called on the radio for him and he said that he is already back. Not any of the three of us in the first car saw him. hen called the second car and asked if they saw him and the answer was negative. WHAT IS FUTSAL?

Futsal is essentially football with a twist. t s a five a side game which includes one goalkeeper for each side, with a much smaller pitch, mostly played indoor stadiums and a (slightly) different ball. With the smaller playing area and reduced team size, each player has more involvement in the game and more touches on

the ball. The special, reduced bounce, ball ensures true roll and the need for a precise touch. Futsal requires the same control and strategy needed on the full si e outdoor fields.

THE TOURNAMENT

The tournament in the Khalifa Sports City in September was geared towards supporting the youth in all fields. is ighness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa said that” Our focus is on pledging the potentials and capabilities of Bahraini cadres to boost the youth sector in the field of sports, and the humanitarian and sports initiatives we have launched will receive full support to continue.” He lauded the

tournament’s role in terms of its enrichment of the whole gamut of sports activities.

THE TOURNAMENT’S SUCCESS

he various successes achieved by the tournament are obvious, affirming that the tournament has become one of the tributaries that support national clubs and teams in the indoor football game. HH Shaikh Khalid praised the big role of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs led by Hisham Mohammed Al Jowder as part of the tournament’s success. he massive convergence of participants from all directions has taken pride in the huge attendance and participation

of responsible Bahrain youth who engaged in all the various youth and sports activities to ensure their success and to re ect positively on the local community.

CONTINUITY OF SUPPORT

The Khalid bin Hamad Futsal League was jointly organised for the fifth consecutive year by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs and the Media ffice of hai h halid bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, under the slogan #Generations_Meeting and came as part of the initiative of is ighness. It included 59 teams that represent youth centres, local unregistered clubs, people with disabilities and girls’ teams for the first time.

There is ongoing misconception that a Futsal pitch is the same as a basketball pitch, a basketball pitch is 420 square metres (28m X 15metres) whereas a futsal pitch is much bigger 800 square metres (40m X 20 metres).

TIME OF THE GAME

KICK-INS

The game is played in two halves of twenty minutes each, the time stops for every dead ball like in a hockey game (eliminating the concept of injury time). There is a break of fifteen minutes between each half.

There are no throw-ins as seen in a football game, instead the players kick the ball in from the touchline. The place of the kick-in should be in close proximity from the place where the ball went out, and the kick-in should be under four seconds of the ball going out or an indirect free ic is given to the other team.

REFEREES There are three referees for each game, two who officiate the games from the touchline, one on each side, one (who is

When in possession of the ball, the goalkeeper has to get rid of it under seconds. Interestingly, a goal-kick is the goalkeeper throwing the ball out, against kicking it out. Once the goalkeepers released the ball, he can’t touch the ball unless it has already gone out or an opposition has touched it.

UNDERCOATING: IS IT WORTH SPENDING OVER? SIR WALTER SCOTT ONCE SAID THAT “TIME WILL RUST THE SHARPEST SWORD.” FOR CAR LOVERS, WE SAY, “RUST WILL RUIN EVEN THE SMOOTHEST CAR.” SO LET’S TALK ABOUT UNDERCOATING. IS IT WORTH THE EXPENSE? WELL, ONLY YOU CAN MAKE THAT DECISION.

Use rubberized undercoating for best results. A rubberized undercoating is more durable and seals better, protecting the metal from exposure to water.

WHY IS CAR UNDERCOAT NOT TO BE IGNORED BY DRIVERS?

Let’s face it, wear and tear from the elements is a reality for vehicles on the road. Even the safest drivers encounter challenges that change the appearance of their vehicle. Upkeep is a regular part of a car’s active cycle. Every car owner knows that car, be it brand new or a used car, can be an expensive but necessary

investment for yourself. The expense does not end with purchase. Maintaining the car technically sharp and aesthetically sound is a continuing investment. Given this, it is not surprising the extent car owners go on the side of precautions to avoid having to shell out even more for repair expenditures. Undercoating your vehicle is one such preventive measure. Undercoating is a protective layer that is applied to the underlayer of a car

where parts are not coated with a protective layer of paint and are thus more susceptible to rust damage. Undercoating is not meant to be an addition to the vehicle’s paint. A good waxing and inspection can help a car owner ensure that their vehicle is protected from rust damage. Since the underlayer of a car is more often exposed to the elements of the road, many drivers choose to add that layer of protection, which is like a paint job for underneath

the vehicle. In addition, undercoating provides a car with a sound dampener that makes operating the vehicle much quieter on the road. In a nutshell, you spend in order to save your investment. NUTRITION

ATHLETE TALK

BARING THE ESSENTIALS Getting the bare nutritional necessities right is crucial to all athletes. We push our bodies to the limit in training so that we can achieve our best race performances. As athletes, we need to fuel our bodies to meet the demands and requirements of our training to ensure our bodies are fuelled not just to perform at their best, but to recover to the best! It pays off to mind the basics of nutrition first!

DO’s

Avoid

Eat three main meals a day and 2/3 snacks incorporating all of the nutrient groups. Try to make your own meals as much as possible as you have better control over the portions and quality of foods you are consuming.

Overly processed foods such as white packaged foods, sugary cereals, diet soda, processed meat.

Carry a water bottle with you at all times and drink at least two litres over the course of the day. Monitor your urine: dark yellow urine indicates dehydration, pale yellow to clear indicates ample hydration.

Excessive amounts of caffeine, alcohol and energy drinks. These products can cause and/or increase your dehydration levels.

Eat all the nutrient groups mentioned above throughout the day.

Cutting out or eliminating whole nutrient groups.

ESSENTIALS EAT REAL FOOD! Quality is key. The three main macronutrients of carbohydrates, protein and fat are all vitally important for your body to grow stronger, recover faster and perform better in training and races. Have ample helpings of good quality grains (brown rice, buckwheat, spelt), lean protein (chicken, eggs, fish, nuts), fats (oily fish, avocado). HYDRATE! Hydration is important yet underestimated. Dehydration is one of the main causes of poor performance and

BER CARTON

Sports Nutrition Advisor @ The Bare Athlete

DNF (Did Not Finish) status in race and training situations. Just a two percent loss of hydration can reduce aerobic capacity by up to 20 percent! It is particularly important in places like Bahrain where athletes train and race in high temperatures and live in air-conditioned spaces.

EAT ENOUGH! Atheletes strive to maintain lean but strong bodies. The key to this though is eating enough rather than cutting out or eliminating foods. With too high a deficit in calories, our bodies may store fat and/or burn muscle.

FITNESS

THE GREAT DEBATE CROSSFIT VS BODYBUILDING

If you’ve ever been in the company of an active friend, you’ve most likely heard of CrossFit or BodyBuilding or both. These two giant training styles have gathered quite an impressive number of followers respectively, and can’t be ignored when walking into any gym these days. But there has also been some comments from both sides regarding the other, and it’s not always positive. With that in mind, we talked to the experts to explain the difference between the two.

C

omparing CrossFit to bodybuilding and vice versa is like comparing a marathon runner to a boxer. Both have trained and adapted to their individual fields. hey don t share the same goals. Neither does bodybuilding training and CrossFit. So how can any of the dedicated followers from

either side claim their training program is better? South African IFBB Men’s Physique Competitor, Morne Wessel defends the bodybuilding training regime. For more information: Morne Wessels @MorrasBruv CrossFit BlackSmith Tel: +973 35 077 969 @CFBlackSmith

CROSSFIT CrossFit trains people for optimal results in fitness training such as endurance, weightlifting strength, gymnastic technique, general physical preparedness (GPP) and the like. It doesn’t focus on what the body looks like,

56

POWERUP | SEPTEMBER 2017

but it focuses on what the body can do. The CrossFit slogan “Forging Elite Fitness” says it all. rossfit aims for fitness. t doesn t intend to make you the biggest guy at a party, the goal is to be the fittest.

COACH TIAAN BOTHA

THESE TWO TRAINING STYLES HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT THEY BOTH REQUIRE TREMENDOUS DISCIPLINE AND HARD WORK. THE ATHLETES IN THESE RESPECTIVE STYLES HAVE THEIR OWN GOALS AND USE THESE TYPES OF TRAINING PROGRAMS TO REACH THEM. THEY CAN’T BE COMPARED AND SEEMS REDUNDANT TO THINK ONE MIGHT BE BETTER THAN THE OTHER

BODYBUILDING The main goal of Bodybuilding was Physical Symmetry. The Goal of a professional (and common everyday gym goer) is to increase the body size and strength while maintaining perfect, or near perfect

symmetry of the body. The goal is to have the perfect physical physique without any muscle lacking in any way. This is not easy. The discipline of training and diet is as ruthless as any other high performing athlete.

YOGA

FOR BREATH IS LIFE When you experience stressful thoughts, your sympathetic nervous system triggers the body’s ancient fight-or-flight response, giving you a burst of energy to respond to the perceived danger. Master the science of breathing and learn the different types of breathing process from the experts of 136.1 Yoga Studio Bahrain Amwaj.

T

he word “Prana” stands for life force and this is believed to be the vital energy or life force that encompasses the body. This also serves as the link between the consciousness and the mind. It was believed that once the breath starts to wander, the mind also becomes unsteady. Once the breath is still, your mind is still as well.

DEEP BREATHING TECHNIQUES COMPLETE BELLY BREATH With one hand on your belly, relax your abdominal muscles, and slowly inhale through the nose, bringing air into the bottom of your lungs. You should feel your abdomen rise. This expands the lower parts of the lungs. Continue to inhale as your rib cage expands outward, and finally, the collar bones rise. At the peak of the inhalation, pause for a moment, then exhale gently from the top of your lungs to the bottom. At the end of exhalation, contract your abdominal muscles slightly to push residual air out of the bottom of your lungs. OCEAN’S BREATH Take an inhalation that is

60

POWERUP | SEPTEMBER 2017

slightly deeper than normal. With your mouth closed, exhale through your nose while constricting your throat muscles. If you are doing this correctly, you should sound like waves on the ocean. ENERGIZING BREATH Begin by relaxing your shoulders and take a few deep, full breaths from your abdomen. Now start exhaling forcefully through your nose, followed by forceful, deep inhalations at the rate of one second per cycle. Your breathing is entirely from your diaphragm, keeping your head, neck, shoulders, and chest relatively still while your belly moves in and out. Start by doing a round of ten breaths, then breathe naturally and notice the sensations in your body. After 15 to 30 seconds, begin the next round with 20 breaths. Finally, after pausing for another 30 seconds, complete a third round of 30 breaths. Beginners are advised to take a break between rounds. KEEPING YOUR COOL ONE CUP AT A TIME

Whether you work outdoors or just tiptoe your way dashing to get inside your office building, the punishing summer heat can cause serious discomfort or even health hazards. Keeping your body in a well-adjusted, heat-ready shape takes both a mindful set of habits as well as spontaneous indulgence with cool and healthy sips.

Cool Tricks to Beat the Heat Tirade

High temperature and relative humidity during the summer months are easily the ingredients to heat stress and heat exhaustion. When the outdoors look too hot to handle, you may want to take matters into your own drink. Introducing your heatbuster Camardo drinks.

Frozen Lemon Freshly squeezed lemon juice, fresh mint leaves and sugar syrup

DRINK MORE WATER Elevate your interest in water drinking by adding frozen berries, grapes or sliced melon to your water when you’re feeling the heat, to encourage you to stay hydrated. CARRY A COOL DOWN PACK Get a cooler ready to place your ice packs. Resting them on your pulse points when the

heat hits you will help cool you down faster. COOLING MISTS Get that spray of freshness ready to grab from your bag. ADD A DASH OF SPICY TO YOUR DIET This sweat-inducing advice may be the last thing you’d think about to keep the sweat at bay but in fact sweating it out with those spicy munches is just the trick to release the heat and lower your body temperature. LOOSEN AND

Berry Blast Smoothie Mixed fresh berries with youghurt with milk.

LIGHTEN UP YOUR WARDROBE Tight clothing in dark shades promotes the feeling of humid discomfort. Search your closet for loose-fitting, cotton materials in light and bright colours. EXPERT TIPS

YOUR ONE-STOP SOLUTION FOR FACIAL ISSUES

Many people are quick to admit having done a number of weird things in the name of beauty. What if I tell you that it can get weirder but in a good way? A procedure that has been used for years to successfully heal sports injuries is now becoming the beauty treatment of choice. Are you noticing dark circles and puffiness under your eyes? Do you see fine lines and sagging around your mouth and cheeks? Is your skin tone just not as bright, healthy and firm as it used to be? Then this is your breakthrough.

MUCH A’ DO ABOUT PLASMA

Platelet Rich Plasma is a natural product created from your own body. A small amount of blood is drawn and placed in a sterile tube that is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the blood components. In addition to their important function in blood clotting, platelets are also known to contain hundred of proteins called growth factors that have healing properties and boost the immune system. Red and white blood cells are

62

POWERUP | SEPTEMBER 2017

divided from the platelets and the plasma. This plasma now contains a higher than normal number of platelets and is called platelet rich plasma. Platelets are the cells in the blood that help the tissue to heal and grow new cells. he in ected into specific areas of the face and neck acts as a matrix that promotes your own collagen to grow. It regenerates tissue and enhances natural processes to smoothen and tighten skin. In this way, PRP softens wrinkles and creates a smoother skin texture and tone.

SIDE EFFECTS EN ROUTE TO SKIN ELEGANCE

You can expect mild redness, swelling and bruising which will fade away in one to two days. The PRP is made from your own cells, virtually eliminating the possibility of any ill side effects. Results begin to show two to four weeks after the procedure and continues to improve over time. For more information: Al Saati Medical Center Tel: +973 17 720 099 @alsaaticenter

GET GLOWING, HEALTHY SKIN WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS DRINK PLENTY OF WATER Need we say more? Water makes up most of the cells. Keeping your body hydrated is the key to good texture and tone of the skin. APPLY SUNBLOCK Don’t skip this one. Use at least SPF50 sunscreen to keep you protected from the harsh sun. AVOID SMOKING, PLEASE! It contributes to a lack of oxygen which damages your healthy cells making your skin look older and more prone to wrinkles. MAINTAIN PROPER DIET: Vegetables and fruits are excellent sources of antioxidants that combat ageing skin.

take a few moments and are mildly uncomfortable. The procedure is usually 30 to 45 minutes long and requires no post procedure care or time off work and activities. ”

MILLION

DEATHS EACH YEAR

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) - includes all diseases of the heart and blood vessels

Each year CVD causes an estimated 17 million deaths worldwide, accounting for one-third of all deaths worldwide. More than one-third of these deaths occur in middle-aged adults. In developed countries heart disease and stro e are the first and second leading cause of death among adult men and women. The main forms of CVD are coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke.

HYPERTENSION

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease. In people aged up to 50 years, both Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) and Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) are associated with cardiovascular risk. In persons aged over 50 years SBP is a far more important predictor of risk.

RAISED SERUM LIPIDS

High levels of LDLcholesterol and other abnormal lipids is a major risk factor for the development of CHD.

This is a disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle. The primary cause of CHD is atherosclerosis or the hardening and narrowing of the arteries due to the build-up of fatty material and pla ue. t reduces blood ow through the coronary arteries to the heart muscle. educed or cut off blood ow and oxygen supply to the heart muscle can result in angina, heart attack and lead to heart failure and arrhythmias.

It is estimated that 80-90% of people dying from CHD have one or more ma or ris factors that are in uenced by lifestyle.

CHD

RISK FACTORS

90%

10%

SMOKING

Smoking is a major risk factor for CHD. Cigarette smoking promotes atherosclerosis and increases the levels of blood clotting factors such as fibrinogen. icotine also accelerates heart rate and raises blood pressure. This is the number one preventable cause of CHD.

DIABETES MELLITUS

Diabetes substantially increases the risk of CHD. Diabetes also magnifies the effect of other ris factors including, raised cholesterol levels, raised blood pressure, smoking and obesity leading to Insulin resistance.

DIET

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)

RISK FACTORS

Several aspects of dietary patterns have been linked to the increased risk of CHD. These include diets high in saturated fats and cholesterol, and high salt intake and diets with low fruit and vegetable intake.

PHYSICAL INACTIVITY

It is estimated that physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease by 50%. It also impacts on other risk factors for CHD including obesity, blood pressure, high triglycerides, a low level of HDL and diabetes.

Prevention and Management

A heart-healthy lifestyle can lower the risk of CHD. If you already have CHD, a mindful awareness and management of your condition may prevent it from getting worse. Heart-healthy lifestyle changes include: HEART-HEALTHY EATING AIMING FOR A HEALTHY WEIGHT MANAGING STRESS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY QUIT SMOKING If lifestyle changes aren’t enough to control your blood cholesterol levels, you may need medications to control or lower your cholesterol. MYTH Using sugarless chewing gum after meal can replace brushing

FACT Nothing can replace proper brushing technique.

MYTH White teeth are healthier teeth

FACT We may think that whiter teeth look better, but teeth are not meant to be pure white. You can help keep your teeth as white as possible by brushing regularly with fluoride toothpaste and flossing.

Who says you need to actually be in a place to “be there”? These days, technology can transport you places in just a peek.

PEEK

Is a one-stop shop that helps you take the guesswork out of sightseeing, offering fun experiences in over 20 major tourist destinations—say, a chocolatetasting tour of San Francisco, surf lessons in Cabo or a New York City gallery walk—that you can book straight from the app. Search by intuitive categories like “what to do if it rains,” “what to do with kids,” and “what to do in groups” or choose from the planned itineraries of tastemakers, like Wolfgang Puck and Diane von Furstenberg. Talk about having a handy book of facts with you while on a trip. This app is more than a tour guide. It is an art and history teacher, pop culture tipster and a cool tour guide all packed into one.

FIELD TRIP

Shows you cool points of interest, like historic spots, interesting architecture, or film locations, wherever you happen to be. As you reach each destination, a card pops up (or if you want the full effect, a voice speaks to you via headphones or Bluetooth) to pepper your exploration with little-known fun facts and details about the locale.
