TIME TO CHANGE THE JOURNEY The age of modern mobility began in the 1950s when America built the interstate highway system. The car was a symbol of freedom, and our cities and towns were reshaped by roadways that could get us anywhere in no time. But today, the love affair with the automobile is waning and record-high congestion has us all seeking a better way to move. Today’s trends in transportation are fascinating and based on the demands of a more productive and time-sensitive way to arrive better. The increasing popularity of shared mobility has resulted in fewer people buying cars, fewer people getting driver’s licenses and more people using rideshare than ever before. All of these trends provide a huge opportunity for Brightline, Central Fare and the live-, work- and play-environment we have developed at Virgin MiamiCentral. These distinct yet linked environments offer a scalable blueprint for ensuring our urban settings enable us to be near the people and places we care about. This is exactly why we built Brightline. Our philosophy is simple: We’re focused on the guest and want to make every moment with us one that stands out. We believe in comfort, convenience and hospitality, and we believe getting there should be as enjoyable as being there. Let’s move forward together, because now is the time to change the journey.

ALL ABOARD IN THE SUNSHINE At the end of the 19th century, the very height of the Gilded Age, the world’s wealthiest came to a new luxury resort town of Palm Beach by riding a train known as the Celestial Railroad. Now, in the 21st century, we can enjoy the same heavenly tradition, riding in style across all of South Florida. It’s not so much the destinations — the nightlife of Miami, the restaurants of Fort Lauderdale, the artsy boulevards of West Palm Beach and soon, the theme parks of Orlando — as it is the simple joy of getting there. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and being able to actually look out the window and take it all in without worrying about traffic or where to park is a great feeling. In fact, I find the whole travel experience, from the seats to the food to the lights in the stations, absolutely stunning. How did these amazing trains get here? Read how Michael Lefevre slept in baggage compartments and discovered America’s heartland as he brought these brightly colored train sets to their new Florida home (p. 22). Of course, there’s also plenty to do once you’ve reached your station, too! In this issue, we highlight the world-class shopping on Palm Beach’s Worth Avenue (p. 12) and the outdoor art experience of Fort Lauderdale’s Mockingbird Trail (p. 48). We visit the best breweries and bakeries of all three cities (p. 10 and p. 20), as well as the greatest culinary innovators in the area (p. 40) and the local buildings that best evoke the ancient design principles of feng shui (p. 32). Wherever you ride these rails, there’s something wonderful to explore. Hope you have a great journey,

Remember bookstores? Yes, they still exist. Raptis is a stand-alone shop not likely to be outdone by Amazon. Raptis features old and rare books, many signed by the authors. But don’t expect to pay Barnes and Noble prices. If you have $22,500 laying around, you can pick up a signed first edition of Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are. All autographs are professionally authenticated.

LILLY PULITZER (FASHION PRINTS)

The newest addition to the roster just opened in November 2018 – or more correctly “re-opened.” The 60-year-old fashion brand actually started on Worth Avenue in 1959 and made several moves since. Lilly prints are characterized by bright colors and Florida-inspired designs. “It’s … more of an experience rather than just shopping,” says Worth Avenue Association President Ashley Berry. This flagship store’s unique feature is an in-house print studio that allows beauty-loving customers to design their own custom shift dress! Just pick the style, print, length and detailing, and the inhouse artist will construct your whimsical dream dress. Talk about an interactive experience!

What to do  with a day  in the city.  By Kara Franker

With lively entertainment, pictureperfect weather and a bevy of hot restaurants, mainland West Palm Beach and the ritzy island of Palm Beach both offer plenty to do. Here’s a round-up of some of the top experiences to enjoy both in one day.

Once on the island, you’ll notice The Society of The Four Arts. Originally founded in the 1930s, this cultural hub is home to lush botanical gardens with museum-quality outdoor sculptures, and the Addison Mizner–designed Esther B. OCOMotives NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TO SOUTH FLORIDA … IN THE OVERHEAD COMPARTMENT?!? MEET THE MAN WHO CROSSED THE COUNTRY WITH THE BAREST ESSENTIALS SO BRIGHTLINE’S TRAINS COULD GET HERE SAFELY.

by Phillip Crandall

BRIGHTLINE

Brightline’s state-of-the-art high-speed trains can top 120 mph, are aesthetically gorgeous, and boast the most unexpected comforts, instantly launching a local transportation revolution the moment that first train pulled into the station. To call these trains heaven-sent or even out-ofthis-world would be an understatement laughed at by both transit gods and intergalactic dispatchers alike; it would also just be factually incorrect. These trains came from Sacramento, dragged about 3,000 miles across the country behind rickety freight trains while Brightline employees like Michael Lefevre slept on Star Wars pillows in the overhead compartment and ate mac and cheese for days on end. 23

BRIGHTLINE (3)

The Long Ride Brightline employees had been going back and forth from South Florida to Northern California for years throughout the manufacturing process. “It’s not like we just sign-and-drive for these trains,” says Lefevre, the current director of operations control center. “We were involved from the purchase order to the delivery.” Lefevre found particular pride in one intrain contribution he originally saw in a Miami restaurant: a Dyson faucet with an Airblade built in, thereby eliminating inadvertent water spillage on the bathroom floor. When the first train set, BrightBlue, was completed in December 2016, the options for delivering the two-locomotive, four-coach set were limited. It was too big to ship on a truck, and the plan to haul it behind an Amtrak passenger train across the northern United States was nixed in the 11th hour. Ultimately, Brightline went with a Union Pacific freight going a southern route, which was geographically shorter but would take longer.

“Could we have just told Siemens (the manufacturer) to make trains and send them to us? Absolutely,” says Lefevre. “But that’s not the kind of company we are. We are so involved in the creation of the equipment that it made no sense to not have a representative, both in terms of the liability of the equipment but also to be there for this remarkable moment in company history.” The company split each weeklong cross-country trip between a couple crews of two to three people, but the process of swapping out those crews along the way was unpredictable given there were no precise schedules on the freight railroads. Lefevre actually calls the process “horrifying,” recalling how, on one delivery, he flew into Tucson, Arizona, to catch the train, texted with people on board to find out where it might stop, and then had to sweettalk his way onto “some railyard in the middle of nowhere that didn’t care who we were.” Like all team members who boarded along the way, he was also responsible for bringing a re-supply of microwavable food. Those first riders had no showers and no beds, so the options for sleep were either upright in a seat, in the vestibule floor next to the bathroom, or in the aisle … in the way of those going to the bathroom. “I looked up and realized that the only way that no one was going to step on me was if I went above them,” Lefevre says. “I climbed up into the overhead rack, and it was fantastic. The luggage racks are long and I’m not, so it works.” Brightline spared no cost in making the train interiors top-notch, but when it came time for these crews to get sleeping bags and pillows, they “looked for the cheapest stuff possible because you knew you were going to burn it as soon as you got off the train five days later,” Lefevre says. The cheapest sleeping supplies were in the children’s sections, which is how all the adults ended up with Star Wars, Batman and other cartoony goods.

Joys of Transport They didn’t have music or movies to pass the time — “I mean, there were supplies I can’t talk about,” Lefevre laughs, “but other than that, it was just water” — but in the end, the nearby window was more than enough entertainment. “Everyone thought we’d be bored, but the reality is train travel is fascinating,” he says. “This was a train that was never going to be in this part of the country again. In fact, most of us would never again be back in these towns. And it was beautiful.” The journey through Texas with BrightRed proved particularly noteworthy, starting with an unplanned 26-hour stop in West Texas when a bridge flooded in front of them. Later, Lefevre documented the historic and likely never-tohappen-again moment when their Brightline train was passed by an Amtrak train operating on the same route. Then, during a stop in Houston, they had enough time to wander around the city;

there, Lefevre found a park with an open-to-thepublic clubhouse. “We were stumbling off the train, smelly, hungry and disgusting, and there’s literally a first-rate clubhouse offering showers for 50 cents,” Lefevre remembers. “I bought everyone a round of showers.” He then ordered pizza delivery to the train, with explicit instructions on how to find them — as if their reflective vests wouldn’t be enough. “We didn’t want to announce (these trips) for the safety of the train,” Lefevre says, “and we went through some very rural places where nobody knew what the hell this was. You would see people mowing their lawns who would stop and stare at the train because nobody had ever seen anything like this, with these colors and big windows and streamlined nosecone. We knew we had done something right if you’re getting people to stop and stare.”

Down Home On December 13, 2016, when BrightBlue arrived in Jacksonville, it was greeted by Brightline managers who had driven up to welcome the train to its home state. Many even boarded so they could be the first to pull into South Florida nine hours later. “We got there very late at night, like 2:00 in the morning, and everybody was waiting for us in West Palm Beach,” Lefevre remembers. “We popped a bottle of champagne and everybody had a toast.” Every Brightline employee remembers how thrilling it was to see that train pull into the station for the very first time, even if they can’t quite put the feeling into words. Lefevre just happened to have that indescribable feeling thousands of miles earlier … back when mac and cheese still sounded appealing and overhead compartments hadn’t yet fulfilled their potential. “It was like waiting for prom night,” he says. “It was something special.” ● 30

SOUTH FLORIDA’S FENG SHUI WITH ITS ABUNDANCE OF WIND AND WATER COMPLEMENTING NATURE’S OTHER ELEMENTS, SOUTH FLORIDA'S ENERGY IS SOMETHING TO EXPERIENCE.

H

Words and photos by Valerie Sands ave you ever been to a place that feels special? Be it peaceful or vibrant, quiet or high-energy … you just leave in a better mood. And when you think about that place, does

it bring up the same feelings? Chances are that there was some good feng shui going on there. Translated from Chinese, feng shui (pronounced fung-shway) means “wind and water.” The ancient Chinese practice of interior design is aimed at guiding energy through the home, business or landscape. By using nature as its guide, the five elements — water, wood, fire, earth and metal — are all incorporated to encourage energy to follow a specific path, relaying messages about the life you wish to lead. As each area in the home represents a different aspect of life, everything you dream of can be achieved under your roof. Be it money, love, career, health or fame, it’s all accessible to you. There are also other cues beyond raw elements that energy will follow to produce the same results. For instance, a properly placed purple accessory in the southeast corner of your home could bring some money you didn’t know was coming,

INGRAM IMAGE

while a mirror due north could help you land that new job or promotion. Offices, landscapes, businesses … anything with a footprint can benefit from the practice. And fortunately, South Florida has a number of gems that exemplify the foundation of feng shui and impact our environment appropriately. 33

elements exemplify a space of learning and growth. And while the learning happens in the galleries and exhibitions, it’s the feng shui that brings the energy — and you — to the museum. Located directly on Biscayne Bay, the 200,000-square-foot campus greets visitors with a massive façade of windows, creating a nearly seamless divide between nature and urbanization. The striking hanging gardens — massive, vertical columns covered in lush foliage — naturally add a wood element, representing rooting and growth, which are essential to our learning ability, memory retention and personal development. The immense white gallery walls support creativity and are the perfect backdrop for the incredible exhibitions that pass through.

rederic Clay Bartlett and his wife Helen Birch, the original homeowners and art collectors, created The Bonnet House, a

compound which simply screams “love.” As you enter, two stone obelisks (representing a “pair”) flank the entry to the main house, sending the message of romantic partnerships and love. Beyond the front door, lush foliage makes way to the walls of the art-filled historical home; the doors to individual rooms are also flanked by pairs of matching statues. Romance further beckons beyond the home from the grounds as 30-40 couples a year exchange their vows at the Bonnet House. It’s so popular among lovers, in fact, that an engagement area was created to make proposals that much more special. Whether you go with loved ones or with the one you love, it’s well worth the 3.6-mile Lyft ride to visit this splendid home.

we need to remain vibrant. Less than two miles from Brightline’s West Palm Beach station, you’ll

find the embodiment of physical health and longevity at The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. Former residence of sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982), the grounds of the property are a walking showcase of the artist’s skill and passion. In 1948, Weaver married the museum’s founder, Ralph Hubbard Norton, and dedicated the next three decades to planting the stunning gardens and constructing purposefully placed sculptures. Soft earth, shaped into blocks and fired, made bricks hard enough to survive generations. The monoliths stand up to 30 feet high and 48 feet wide and are strategically placed to guide you through the grounds. Amidst the massive brick monuments, you’ll find “Seven Beings.” Constructed from granite and standing at 15 feet tall and 21 feet wide, the sculpture portrays seven individuals, each looking in a different direction, acting as sentries over the property, ensuring its healthy survival for generations to come. Next time you’re somewhere that feels special, look around. You might see some feng shui hints as

When it comes to the urban planning of transportation centers, journalist Feargus O’Sullivan makes an excellent point: “Stations are more than pragmatic transit hubs to be designed solely with fluid movement in mind. They are social centers and expressions of civic identity,” he writes in his City Lab article, “Planning the Transit Hubs of the Future.” Clearly, Brightline was considering this same viewpoint when it built hubs in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Not only do the designs reflect South Florida’s clean-lined modernity, they are located smack-dab in downtowns rather than being end-points in isolation. When travelers exit the stations, they have endless opportunities for entertainment — and singularly exciting culinary options. Grapefruit Hamachi from Brad Kilcore’s Kaido 41

MOCKINGBIRD MAGIC

This unlikely intersection of art, flora, fauna and industry creates its own immersive force of nature.

Rebecca Bradley, Cadence’s cofounder and design principal, says their use of “native materials, designing with kindness and thoughtfulness infused in our process (and) using our design solutions as teaching moments” is the firm’s calling card … something breathtakingly clear as you walk this urban art trail. We spoke to Bradley about the trail, its mythical mockingbird and Fort Lauderdale’s ever-evolving landscape.

The sudden emergence of Fort Lauderdale’s Flagler Village out of its not-so-humble warehouse beginnings can be attributed to many factors, but it’s primarily the artists whose collective spirit and nuanced work has set the area’s charming, alluring tone. In the midst of it all — combining the urban with the art while keeping a necessary focus on the nature — is Mockingbird Trail. Here art installations inspire, contemporary design awes, and natural wonders share space with an elusive, mythical creature inviting you to discover even more. It’s all the creation of Cadence, the landscape architecture firm whose vision and services have implemented more than 65 projects throughout the tricounty region since 2010, with more than a dozen more under construction or scheduled to break ground soon. 49

 “The more time I spent here, the more I realized the abundance of unique native plant diversity that used to exist here, and that often has to be really searched out to find, especially in Broward County. (I’m inspired by) the need to conserve and raise awareness for this beautiful South Florida bio-diversity we have been gifted. The ability to design for year-round use is something unique to our location, as is the year-round growth cycle for plants. We also have access to a local stone — oolite — that can be used in various ways for retaining soil, vertical applications and horizontal paving. This stone gives us a special material that is truly our own ‘South Florida’ look.”

SOUTH FLORIDA … IN 10 YEARS “(It will be) infused with nature. A redefining of urbanity — where we have woven the urban mass with an urban landscape that is more porous (increased areas for our storm water to drain), more tree canopy (to sequester water and pollutants), more plant life (to absorb heat and provide opportunity for humans to see wildlife in the city), and provide more opportunities to connect with nature (to serve our fast-growing urban populations with the countless benefits nature provides for humans when they are connected to it).” KELLY COULSON (X3); CADENCE (X2); FRAMAGA PHOTOGRAPHY

GET A CLUE

More Than A Walkway “From its inception in 2015, (Mockingbird Trail) has been influenced by inclusive input from residents, business owners and artists who believe Fort Lauderdale has an evolving story to tell. The route, the various events we have programmed around the trail, (and) the interactive art pieces are all influenced by our community as a reflection of them. The local art and business community

also sees a bolder vision for the trail in the next three to five years, serving as the primary pedestrian route that knits all of our downtown neighborhoods together. Our community wants this trail to provide a new civic identity for Fort Lauderdale, a trail where everyone can go for exercise, alternate transportation and to have a little fun searching for the elusive mockingbird.”

“(There were) organized activities and discussions … through a community workshop process … around the mockingbird, the Florida state bird. Similar to other mythical creatures that have lasted decades through storytelling — why not create our own? A giant mythical mockingbird that eats Florida citrus and turns orange. Driven by intrigue and perpetuating the story by those that visit the trail, our ‘evidence’ is the sculptures along the trail route. This component adds an entire level of spontaneity to the trail itself, so people are able to create their own stories about our mockingbird while on the trail and viewing the public art pieces. The trail map shares the story and the route you can explore by foot to view both the ‘evidence’ series and our multi-sensory mural ‘Main Course.’”

HOPEFUL TRAIL TAKEAWAYS “A connection with nature, a perspective of the city that can’t be had from inside an automobile (and) a new outlook on how respite can be found even in a very developed urban setting.” Field guides can be viewed at www.mockingbirdtrail.com and on Instagram @mockingbirdtrail.

Florida Becomes a Leading State in Solar Energy

The solar revolution is well underway in Florida, and the state’s largest energy company, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), is in the midst of one of largest solar expansions in the history of the nation. Through a groundbreaking “30-by-30” plan, FPL will install more than 30 million solar panels across Florida by 2030, making the Sunshine State a world leader in the production of solar energy. To put it in perspective, 30 million solar panels laid end-to-end would wrap around the Earth one and a half times.

So how are they doing it? It all started in 1984, when FPL commissioned its first universal solar installation, a 10-kilowatt PV facility in Miami that helped the company’s employees gain experience with the then-emerging technology. Fast forward to 2019 and the company has more than five million panels installed across 18 solar power plants in operation across North, Central and South Florida. Today, FPL and its sister company, NextEra Energy Resources, are the world’s leading producer of renewable energy form the wind and sun. By far the state’s largest producer of solar energy, FPL leverages its experience and economies of scale to advance solar cost-effectively. These solar plants pay for themselves and are expected to deliver millions of additional dollars in fuel savings to customers over the next three decades. Smart, long-term investments, like this, are one of the reasons FPL bills are about thirty percent below the national average. “FPL is not your traditional electric company,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. “We’re a technology company that delivers power, and we’ve long believed in making smart, forward-thinking infrastructure investments to produce tangible, longterm benefits – cleaner air, lower electric rates and reliable service – for our customers and our state. Now we’re taking our long-standing clean energy commitment to the next level.” In addition to large solar energy centers, FPL is installing fun, interactive solar arrays at museums, zoos, parks and other locations within communities throughout Florida – including at the Brightline stations. From solar trees with charging stations for mobile devices to solar canopies that offer shade, these distinctive arrays serve multiple functions, in addition to generating more emissions-free energy for everyone. These highly visible installations also help to raise awareness for renewable energy and inspire people to learn more about the important role solar energy plays in Florida’s clean energy future.
