NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT It’s the season of new beginnings and for most that means writing down an annual list of resolutions. Luckily for us here in South Florida, our very own surroundings are nurturing our ambition to be the very best versions of ourselves in 2020. How, you might ask? Well, it seems as if the happenings around our three stations will be making it easier to check some resolutions off our own lists … Determined to expand your taste palate this year? Our generous Cuban community offers up several locales (that extend far beyond Little Havana) where you can sample some authentic cuisine (page 60). Want to disconnect from technology and get closer to nature? Leave the bustle of our major cities to discover the real Florida that famed photographer Clyde Butcher dedicated his career to capturing (page 40). Or maybe do exactly the opposite and take a plunge into Miami’s music festival magic (page 50). If we’re talking about living our best lives now, we don’t have to look far for inspiration. Our very own South Florida is working hard to be the best in several areas. World-class sports and entertainment? Check. Miami hosts its 11th Super Bowl with a bevy of star-studded events in tow (page 74) and features some halftime hotties with their own Miami connection (page 28). A luxury shopping and dining destination? Check. The up-and-coming Rosemary Square expands on the already-hot CityPlace in West Palm Beach (page 26). And with the addition of more Brightline stops coming our way, there’s no reason to miss out. Climb aboard and seize the moment! Standing at the beginning of a whole new decade can be daunting, but we have so much to look forward to. Our list of resolutions can easily turn into a list of blessings. Cheers to the journey ahead!

2020 VISION
January has officially arrived, and while the world is looking ahead at a new year and a new decade, it feels like we here in South Florida have such a high-speed head start. While they’re making post-defrost plans, we’ve got South Beach to wander and global cuisines to sample during SOBEWFF. While they’re huddled and looking around on winter’s sidelines, we’ve got a couple Super Bowl parties to be seen at. While they’re waiting for a break to come in spring, we’ve seemingly caught all the breaks already. Actually, as South Floridians, we all know that building up this world-class, multilingual William P. Jordan III
home of ours isn’t just about luck; it has taken a lot of hard work. Fortunately, the rise of

MOST VALUABLE PERFORMERS While two of the best football teams clash, two of entertainment’s finest unite for one spectacular, truly Miamian show. By Elizabeth Martinez

n February 2, Miami will make history when the city plays host to its 11th Super Bowl. (Miami and New Orleans were previously tied at ten games each.) And when the two teams vying for the championship break
after the second quarter, the real show will finally begin. Two superstars — Jennifer Lopez and Shakira — will
take to the stage for the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, one of the country’s biggest concerts of the year. Even though J.Lo is originally from New York and Shakira is from Colombia, this pairing of two Latina performers perfectly embodies the culture of Miami, widely regarded as the global capital of Latin music. Adding to that are the noteworthy ties both singers have to our magic city. Miami’s own Gloria and Emilio Estefan were instrumental to both artists’ careers. While Lopez forged a career as a dancer and movie star, it was her singing that catapulted her to celebrity status. Emilio became her executive producer, and it was Gloria that co-wrote “Let’s Get Loud,” arguably the biggest hit on Lopez’s 1999 debut album, On the 6.

Taking a deeper dive into Mizner, the darling and go-to architect of the “Jazz Age elite,” author Beth Dunlop has just finished Addison Mizner: Architect of Fantasy and Romance for Rizzoli. In this 300-page volume, Dunlop looks at Mizner’s design vocabulary, one which was mirrored in many ways by Fatio, Gustav Maass, John Volk and others who, over about a decade, transformed Palm Beach into one of the world’s

LL YEAR LONG and all statewide, music festivals highlight just how unique and awesome Florida is. Big names take to general stages from Panama City Beach to Key West and so many spots in-between, while genre-celebrating festivals focused on everything from blues to EDM unite revelers from far beyond Florida’s borders. Even going by the festival names alone, Florida’s musical celebrations run the gamut of pure and straightforward — think the punk pilgrimage that dominates downtown Gainesville every year known simply as Fest — to the absurd yet still somehow apt, like the new Orlando festival that premiered this past November, spectacularly called Florida Man Music Festival. It’s not just that there’s something for everyone; it’s that there’s a bunch of things for those particular, truly musicloving Floridians. And if Florida is a can’t-miss festival, Miami is definitely the main stage. This time of year always brings the best out of Miami, particularly its sounds. Last year at this time, Life in Color brought its Technicolor paint party, along with Diplo and DJ Diesel (aka Shaquille O’Neal). Meanwhile, Wynwood’s III Points festival, in past years a fall staple, moved to February last year; in May 2020, it looks to spotlight artists, from near and far. If III Points and so many other upcoming musical festivals are any indication, Miami is going to have quite the roaring ’20s ahead.

ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL March 20-22; Bayfront Park Well, look who’s legal! Exactly 21 years — and, OK, technically 21 years plus a week — after the first ever Ultra powered on and forever changed how electronic music would be cranked in Miami, this year’s festival returns to its proper home in Bayfront Park. Hyping live exclusives like Major Lazer and Zedd as well as DJ favorites like David Guetta and Armin Van Buuren, Ultra promises to be every bit as revolutionary and

CUBAN HEAVEN In the gastronomic melting pot that is South Florida, one particular cuisine reigns. By Stacy Moya
T
HERE’S JUST NO DENYING THAT AROMA. It’s the smell of fresh garlic, onions, peppers and
tomatoes sizzling. It entices appetites and a little
drool … and that’s just the sofrito. Cuban cuisine is a blend of Spanish and Portuguese flavors with Caribbean influences, and the aroma alone is the Pied Piper for food lovers. So how did Cuban food become such a defining cuisine in South Florida? The answer is simple — Cubans. While it is estimated that somewhere near 15,000 Cubans lived in South Florida prior to 1959 when Fidel Castro took office, it was the forthcoming waves of Cubans departing the island due to the communist dictator’s politics that sparked the exodus in 1961. Tremendo arroz con mango — which translates to rice with mango — means “a really sticky mess” in Cubanisms. In 2017, it was estimated that 1.53 million Cuban Americans live in Florida. Little Havana became the first official Cuban neighborhood in Miami. Perhaps that’s because the area was in the vicinity of the Freedom Tower, which housed the processing center for the influx of refugees … or the fact that it’s just minutes from the ocean, reminding Cubans of their beloved island and homes. It wasn’t long before Cuban businesses started popping up, and restaurants flourished because, after all, food will always

be a reminder of home. In Miami, Little Havana’s Calle Ocho is
BrightlineGO104_060-64_cuban cuisine .indd 61
the most popular destination for Cuban cuisine to tourists and locals alike, and while Miami remains the epicenter for Cuban food, it is readily available all over South Florida. 61

Let the Influencers Follow You
Hey, explorers, arts lovers, foodies and families — Greater Fort Lauderdale is the place to be. In addition to our beautiful beaches and waterways, check out our rich events calendar, unique neighborhoods to explore, and plenty of ways to play on land and water.
Waterfront Dining With 23 miles of beaches and nearly 300 miles of Intracoastal waterways winding throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale, waterfront dining is kind of our thing. If you’re feeling a shorts and sandals type of vibe, relax at Coconuts, Nauti Dawg Marina Café, Park and Ocean, and many other chill lunch spots.
Take a Walk on the Artsy Side Taking place every last Saturday evening of the month, Flagler Arts and Technology (FAT) Village ArtWalk also makes for a night to remember. With a series of warehouses, murals, studios and hipster cafes, FATVillage is “downtown Fort Lauderdale’s creative enclave.” Artists, collectors and pedestrians alike gather on a walking tour of the up-andcoming area. Tour epic street art up close as the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project guides you through a walking tour of the many murals that mask the buildings in the area. During the city’s artwalk, there are live art performances throughout the evening, live music, restaurants, shops, gallery openings and cultural programming.
Rock the Ocean Tortuga Music Festival is back on Fort Lauderdale beach in April with an unbelievable country and roots music lineup. Headliners of the three-day event include Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw.
Get a Taste of the Caribbean You can immerse yourself in Caribbean culture at the Taste the Islands Experience in May. The food and drink festival features celebrity cooking demonstrations; authentic, culture-infused cuisine; live music; an artisan shopping village; fashion events and more — all in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The Palm Beach Balloon Festival Dozens of giant, glowing hot air balloons lit up the sky
Thanksgiving weekend as the Palm Beach Balloon Festival took flight at the International Polo Club in Wellington. The three-day event, which took place at dusk each evening, saw hundreds of attendees enjoying the colorful and bright balloons, some of which were branded with cartoon characters or vivid rainbow varieties. VIP rides offered a few minutes alone in a hot air balloon with your very own pilot, though there were anchored balloons aplenty, giving everyone the chance to get in on the action. Food vendors and other local companies set up shop throughout the club as the balloons produced a light show late into the night.

Special courtesies include preference on dining and hotel stays, as well as access to private transportation options between the developments. We’ve found that our buyers are dedicated to the Four Seasons brand and this is a special way to reward that loyalty by allowing them to experience our entire portfolio.
As the first five-star development in Broward County, Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale is redefining the city as an international destination for luxury. Demand for the impeccable homes and world-renowned Four Seasons service has remained strong, with the development well over 60 percent sold. Prospective buyers are invited to visit the exquisite Sales Gallery to experience the recently unveiled vignettes of the custom Italkraft kitchens, designed by Tara Bernerd, as well as luxurious bathrooms. Just as sales velocity has remained robust, construction progress has remained on schedule, with occupancy scheduled for 2021. Construction, handled by the Southeast’s preeminent Coastal Construction, is significantly underway, with cranes now visible on the site. Fort Partners also recently announced the closing of a multimillion-dollar construction loan for Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale. Financed by Madison Realty Capital, the loan is the largest for a residential construction project in Fort Lauderdale history, showing the immense promise of the development to transform luxury living in the city. FLORIDA BECOMES A LEADING STATE IN SOLAR ENERGY
The solar revolution is well underway in Florida, and the state’s largest energy company, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), is in the midst of one of the largest solar expansions in the history of the nation. Through a groundbreaking "30-by-30" plan, FPL will install more than 30 million solar panels across Florida by 2030, making the Sunshine State a world energy. leader in the production of solar ene To put it in perspective, 30 million solar panels laid end-to-end would wrap around the Earth one and a half times. FPL has also announced plans to build the largest community solar program in the U.S. If approved by the Florida Public Service Commission, FPL SolarTogether would allow customers to directly support the expansion of solar energy in Florida and receive credit on their bills for the savings generated. By far the state’s largest producer of solar energy, FPL leverages its experience and economies of scale to advance solar cost-effectively. These solar plants pay for themselves and are expected to deliver millions of additional dollars in fuel savings to customers over the next three decades.
Smart, long-term investments like this are one of the reasons FPL bills are among the lowest in the nation. Along with investments in solar energy, FPL has been researching and testing battery storage technologies to study a variety of potential benefits ranging from grid stabilization to improved solar integration. Solar-plus-battery storage systems at three FPL solar power plants are helping increase the predictability of solar and extend its benefits shining. even when the sun is not shinin “FPL is not your traditional electric company,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. “We’re a technology company that delivers power, and we’ve long believed in making smart, forward-thinking infrastructure investments to produce tangible, long-term benefits – cleaner air, lower electric rates and reliable service – for our customers and our state. Now we’re taking our long-standing clean stat energy commitment to the next level.” Learn more about FPL’s commitment to advancing solar energy in Florida at FPL.com/Solar.
