A

watch as a mere timepiece has become a very quaint idea. Today, there are a mindboggling variety of watches, from jewel-encrusted fashion statements costing tens of thousands of dollars to utilitarian straps of rubber that keep track of your every step. Outdoor watches are a particularly dynamic part of the watch world — with players big and small wanting to get in the game, from traditional old-guard watch companies and new independent designers to iconic tech and fitness giants. Here in the great outdoors, the distinction between traditional sports watches and fitness trackers has blurred into an impressive hybrid. They

have come out of their utilitarian corners to embrace the latest trends in technology and design, and have become timepieces on steroids for the sporty set. Think built-in GPS, smartphone notifications and sensors to record a stack of metrics, from speed and distance to heart rate, calories burned and altitude. Many outdoor watches come with heart-rate monitor straps and companion apps to generate and digest even more data while on the move, whether climbing, running, surfing or swimming. With a few taps, turns and swipes, you can crunch info from calories burned to overall fitness levels to hopefully aid your journey to a more fulfilling outdoor adventure.

IF YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE TAKES YOU FROM MONSTER STROKES IN THE WATER TO POWER PEDALING ON THE BIKE AND THEN INTO YOUR RUNNING SHOES TO POUND THE GROUND, IT’S VITAL TO GET YOUR HANDS ON A SPORTS WATCH MADE WITH ADVANCED METRICS AND 24-HOUR TRACKING TO HANDLE ALL THREE.

15

Dufry_Tradewinds18_012-21 Outdoor Watches .indd 15

11/14/18 11:03 AM

Some models come with a heart-rate strap accessory that tracks the typical metrics plus elevation, cadence, vertical oscillation and even the maximum volume of oxygen used (VO2 max). Other choices for serious runners enhance the standard metrics and builtin heart rate monitors by plugging into running apps so you can work on your personal best. Some runners’ watches even have a feature that allows you to race yourself on previous routes. Really hardcore hoofers should look to watches that allow the wearer to view info on stride length and vertical ratio, and even see data on lactate threshold to prevent overtraining. A few also have accelerometers to gauge body movement. All these amazingly sliced and diced data

points are only as good as your battery, so be sure yours boasts an extra long life — the longest last up to a whole week. TRIATHLETE WATCHES If your workout routine takes you from monster strokes in the water to power pedaling on the bike and then into your running shoes to pound the ground, it’s vital to get your hands on a sports watch made with advanced metrics and 24-hour tracking to handle all three. For instance, the top picks have sophisticated smartwatch options to track the must-have metrics. The top dogs have a sensor that allows you to estimate when you’ll finish your run based on your current pace and another, especially handy for frequent travelers running on new turf, is a back-to-start option that will direct you back to your starting point via the shortest possible route. Hard-core triathletes will want to pair up a smartwatch with a companion heart-rate monitor strap for even more training stats, and synch it with a shoepod sensor to gauge cadence and stride length. A few impressive pieces even boast something called a Recovery Status and Orthostatic Test that predicts when you’ll be ready to train again based on all the data it collected from your last performance.

RUNNING & HIKING WATCHES It’s hard to remember how the drivers of the world got anywhere before GPS, and it’s the same now with runners. GPS watches have become an essential piece of gear, along with the right running shoe and the best earphones for your heart-pumping playlist. The ideal hybrid timepieces have a tachymeter, an element that measures speed, and sensors to track distance, altitude and heart rate. Now that they can analyze your running style, many of these watches practically run the race for you.

EXTREME SPORTS WATCHES For those so inclined to take on challenges like climbing the world’s tallest peaks or trekking through the wilderness for days on end without another soul in sight, rugged but lightweight watches with a super-long battery life — as much as 100 hours — are an absolute musthave. The top options have sophisticated apps that allow you to make mini movies incorporating the route map, photos and even vital stats that sensors have collected so you can share them with your like-minded sporty pals. Serious adventurers will appreciate outdoor watches with a hybrid radioGPS technology that sets the time anywhere on Earth. Look for watches with a built-in solar panel that recharges the battery and an LED face — indispensable if you need to navigate in the dark. To help you survive in the middle of nowhere, look for watches with a steel case and tough straps made of super-strong nylon paracord that can be yanked off, unbraided and pressed into action as a multi-purpose tool to secure gear to your backpack, fix a tent, tie a splint for a sprained ankle or catch fish.

DIVING WATCHES Yes, they have to be water-resistant until at least 200 to 300 meters down (or to a crazy 3,000 meters, like a classic diving watch built by Breitling) and numbers and dials have to “glow” so they’re readable in all those deep dark places you’ll be exploring. Beyond that, though, today’s top diving watches offer even more. The pricey mechanical diving watches made of lightweight titanium make for a great piece to strap on while you’re heading down into the depths of the undersea world. Better still are the smartly designed models with a dome-shaped dial filled with oil to minimize reflection for maximum visibility under water from any angle; that way, divers can see the vital readings for time and temperature.

OUTER SPACE WATCHES What with the prospect of space tourism looming on the horizon, a new breed of watches may soon have a much wider audience: timepieces made for astronauts to withstand the ultimate extremes in temperature, pressure, noise and speed. Today, newly made versions of the iconic models beloved by the astronauts of the 1960s are just as durable as the originals and come with interchangeable stainless-steel and black-leather straps.

Justin Lewis / Getty Images

SURFING WATCHES It might be debatable whether you actually need a watch while you’re surfing, but for those who think they do, there is a sea of models specially crafted for the sport. The best have been designed by surfing enthusiasts who know what really matters when you’re out there riding a big one: a tough steel case, durable nylon strap, and water-resistance down to 100 meters (328 feet) or more. The best choices have a large, easyto-read high/low dial to measure the tides and an antiglare face that makes it readable at a glance even in the bright sun.

SHORT DRESS The ultimate in fuss-free fashion, a dress is the onepiece wonder every cruiser should have. For maximum

practicality, choose one in a wrinkle-resistant knit and a solid color or stripe that works with the rest of your wardrobe. Sleeveless or short-sleeved styles can be layered under a jacket or shawl for chilly evenings on deck or as a dressier dinner outfit. For a casual daytime look, wear the dress as you would a skirt, with a T-shirt or blouse on top. MAXI DRESS Once reserved for evenings and formal events, maxi dresses are the modern way to look pretty and pulled together, day or night. Minimize ironing by choosing a knit jersey (heavier knits drape better) and maximize versatility by choosing a solid or pattern in a color that coordinates with the rest of your clothing. s exciting as it can be, for most women, packing for a cruise presents a unique challenge. On one hand, there’s no limit to the amount of bags you can bring with you. On the other, no one wants to share his or her cabin with a gargantuan suitcase! But you also don’t want to find yourself at sea (literally!) without the appropriate garments for the day’s activities, whether that’s sporty kicks for the running track or a snazzy outfit for formal night. Our sartorial suggestion: Refer to this packing list of 10 essential items and look on point every moment you’re aboard.

their wardrobe around two or three colors, ideally one or two neutrals such as black, white or gray, plus a complementary hue such as scarlet, turquoise or sapphire. TOPS No one will notice if you’re wearing the same pair of shorts, jeans or skirt day after day, but they will notice your top, so choose wisely. For a seven-day cruise, pack at least two white T-shirts (plus perhaps an additional one if you’re a spiller). Boat-neck tees flatter most, and those without pockets offer a cleaner silhouette. Also look out for accents such as statement sleeves, embellishment or a deep-V back for added interest. Complete your quota with a loose button-down shirt (which can double as a swimsuit cover-

up); a floaty, crinkle-cotton long-sleeved blouse (to keep cool while protecting you from the sun); and something in a dressier fabric such as silk to wear with pants or a skirt in the evening. SHORTS/SKORT Whether you favor high-waist hot pants or hip-slung Bermudas, two pairs of shorts can see you through a weeklong Caribbean cruise in style. Denim, cotton canvas or khaki fabrics are a great backdrop for bright colored or patterned tops, and can be worn day after day without notice. Skorts (also called scooters) offer the look of a skirt with the practicality of shorts underneath, so they’re a great option for windy days, golf or other active pursuits. 27

SNEAKERS

The rubber-thong sandal is a warm-weather vacation classic for a reason: it’s inexpensive, suits almost every foot, and takes up little space in your suitcase. Buy the cheapest pair you can find or splurge on a designer brand; either way, your flip-flops will take you effortlessly to the pool, the spa or beach.

Designers have gone beyond the traditional bikini or maillot to offer swimsuits that’ll make you the belle of the beach. Long-sleeved swimsuits (also called spring suits) provide maximum sun-protection and sleek surfer style. Off-the-shoulder styles go from deck to dinner when worn as tops and paired with shorts or maxi skirts. And a rash guard (a longsleeved top made of swim material) offers SPF, modesty and style when worn over any two-piece.

Athletic footwear has been strongly influenced in the last few years by the athleisure trend (wearing traditional workout wear styles and fabrics beyond the gym). This season, sneakers with sock-like knit textiles and no visible laces are particularly popular, offering a polished yet practical look. Pack a pair and rest assured that you’ll be ready for anything the cruise brings, whether it’s a few minutes on the treadmill, strolling the promenade deck or navigating waterfalls during a shore excursion.

JUMPSUIT/ROMPER

EMBELLISHED FLATS

Even the most nondescript outfit is instantly upgraded with bold accessories, so don’t underestimate the power of a striking necklace or a pair of chandelier earrings to make even a simple T-shirt dress dinnerappropriate. Pack a cloth pouch with one or two pairs of statement earrings (tasseled styles are having a moment); a bold cuff or bangle; and a multistrand necklace in a metal finish and/ or bright color, and you can take your outfits from day to night and back again with ease.

Another workhorse of one-piece dressing is the jumpsuit or the shortslength romper. Choose from slinky knits (perfect for evening wear) or more casual denim and chambray styles, which are perfect for a day in port or lounging on deck. A leather belt and wedges elevates the look, or dress it down with espadrilles and a straw tote.

Think you have to wear high heels on formal night or for an elegant dinner? Think again. A pair of flat shoes or one with a small heel such as a mule or slide can be just as appropriate as a stiletto, especially when they’re in a metallic color or adorned with embellishments such as feathers, crystals or even pom-poms. Bonus: In the event of rough seas, you’ll feel much more stable in flat shoes.

A DETOX CAN HELP RESET HABITS RELATED TO PORTIONS AND FOOD CHOICES WHILE HELPING BRING YOU BACK IN TUNE WITH YOUR BODY.

W

hile a cruise may not be the first place you think of to begin a detox, it can actually be a great time to adopt a healthier routine. “Some people like doing detoxes at a health resort or on a cruise because it takes them out of their normal environment, eliminates distractions and takes the thinking out of implementation,” says May Tom, R.D., a nutritionist at Cal-A-Vie Health Spa in Vista, CA. Access to healthy dining options and an on-site spa make it easier than ever.

Ingram Image

If you prefer to indulge while on vacation, you may want to hold off on changing your diet until you’ve returned home. Regardless of when you start, the decision to focus on getting healthier and doing away with unhealthy habits is always a step in the right direction.

34

Dufry_Tradewinds18_032-38 DETOX.indd 34

11/14/18 11:27 AM

DETOX DETERMINATION Often associated with deprivation, a detox needn’t be an unpleasant experience. In fact, the benefits far outweigh any temporary discomfort. From shedding unwanted pounds to developing a healthy glow, it can alter not only the way you look, but also the way you feel about yourself. “Detoxes can lead to transformational experiences that will change the way you live your life in the best way possible,” says Alex Glasscock, cofounder and CEO of The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu. “On a detox, you end up feeling re-energized and empowered to jumpstart a new lifestyle. Most importantly, by detoxing your body and reintroducing food categories, you can see how your body reacts.” For instance, could the fact that you experience stomach cramps every time you eat cereal with milk point to a dairy allergy? Or could the bloating or headaches you feel after eating wheat indicate that you’re sensitive to gluten?

Ingram Image

“A detox can help reset habits related to portions and food choices while helping bring you back in tune with your body,” says Tom. “It supports the body’s natural ability to get rid of toxins by supporting organs such as the liver and kidneys. A detox can also help you become aware of potential foods and ingredients that place an extra burden on the liver, such as sugar, alcohol and caffeine.”

OVERHAUL YOUR DIET According to Tom, one of the easiest ways to get started is to take a break from alcohol, caffeine and sugar. She also recommends eating more vegetables and incorporating green juices into your diet.

CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE Aside from altering your diet, there are also a number of lifestyle changes that can reap real rewards. Getting at least eight hours of sleep is key — to say nothing about how great those eight always feel aboard a cruise ship. Research reveals that a lack of shut-eye can contribute to a greater risk of obesity, heart disease and more. According to the National Sleep Foundation, it’s essential to health and wellbeing.

“Aiming for 40 grams of fiber daily from plant-based foods is foundational to most detox programs,” says Tom. If you’re detoxing at home, you’ll want to begin by cleaning out your fridge and pantry and restocking them with a host of healthy options.

“The liver does the best job detoxing during the night when you are sleeping,” says Tom. While awake, incorporate some physical activity. Working up a sweat should play a role in any detox. Consider checking out a workout class or relaxing in a sauna. Just be sure to stay hydrated.

Glasscock suggests choosing foods from the perimeter of the grocery store and avoiding processed foods. “One of the biggest problems with people’s diets is the amount of salt, which is sneakily in most processed foods,” he says.

“Drink the equivalent number of ounces of water daily to your body weight,” says Glasscock. And while it’s important to get your heart rate up on a regular basis, don’t overdo it when first embarking on an intense detox.

STAY MOTIVATED While no detox is without its fair share of challenges, there are some steps you can take to make it less daunting. According to Tom, it helps to have a detailed game plan and to set a specific time frame, as most programs range from 10 to 21 days. Having support from those around you can also make it easier to stick to healthy choices. Consider recruiting someone in your household or a friend to join you. Also, don’t give up.

TREAT YOURSELF One of the more enjoyable aspects of a detox is indulging in spa treatments that help cleanse and purify the body. You can take advantage of at-sea days with a visit to the spa. There, you’ll find a host of detoxifying options, such as fullbody wraps, which encourage the body to eliminate toxins through sweating, and massages that incorporate lymphatic drainage, which helps move waste fluids from the body. Basically, these treatments help cleanse the body and put you in a more relaxed state of mind.

“Some people quit a detox in the middle because of one slip-up,” says Tom. “It’s important to get back on track and keep going even if you’ve made some mistakes. Reassess the detox program at the end of each week: What did you do well and where did you struggle?” To maintain your motivation, remember why you’re doing it in the first place. It could be to lose weight, to look and feel better or to live longer. Whatever it is, write it down and verbalize it to someone else. And finally, avoid unnecessary distractions. “Always having a phone in your pocket and in your hand is the ultimate distraction,” says Glasscock. “When you shift your primary focus to yourself, you can start making the right changes in your life.”

he Caribbean is intimately associated with rare gems and precious jewelry. Historically, gemstones from all over the world have been bought and sold in these islands, and that’s still true to this day. Many of the precious stones traded here come from the Caribbean itself. Some can be found in exceptional quality here; others, such as larimar, appear nowhere else in the world.

The conch is a type of giant sea snail. It’s prized for its tasty flesh, and its impressive shell is used for decoration, trade and even as a musical instrument. Only one in 10,000 conchs contain a pearl, and only a few thousand conch pearls a year are produced worldwide. Of these, only 15 to 20 percent are suitable for jewelry. Unlike oyster pearls, conch pearls can’t be cultured.

MIKIMOTO

PEARLS Pearls play a key role in the often turbulent history of these islands. Pearls were held in esteem from the earliest times, and were the focus of the first commercial interactions between Europeans and the indigenous peoples of the region. The Caribbean has always produced exceptionally fine pearls, but perhaps the most remarkable are those found not in oysters but in the conch.

Conch pearls are harder than other pearls and have a unique luster. They are exquisitely beautiful, and are found in an array of colors from white to chocolate. Perhaps the loveliest are pink conch pearls, with their warm tints of peach and rose. LARIMAR Perhaps the most famous Caribbean gemstone of all is larimar. With its bewitching azure and aquamarine hues, larimar is often seen as embodying the color of the Caribbean sea and sky. Like blue amber, larimar is only found in the Dominican Republic. Although larimar was familiar to the indigenous people, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that it began to be more widely known. Its rediscovery is credited to a Peace Corps volunteer named Norman Rilling and a Dominican named Miguel Méndez. In 1974, they found some specimens while working in the

southwestern province of Barahona and discovered that the source of the stones was an extinct volcano; erosion was freeing pieces of larimar from the surrounding rocks, and these were then washed down onto the beaches nearby. It was Méndez who gave the stone its evocative name. “Lari-” comes from the name of his daughter, Larissa, while “mar” is the Spanish word for the sea, reflecting the stone’s entrancing bluegreen coloration. Larimar can range in color from powder blue through teal to forestgreen; there’s also an unusual variety of the stone called red larimar, which has magenta, brown and rosy-pink shades. The color can be fairly uniform, delicately mottled and even cloudy or frosted. Fine crystals embedded in the stone reflect the light and may give it the appearance of satin. As well as handmade jewelry, larimar is sometimes sculpted into small figurines and other objets d’art by local craftspeople.

BLUE AMBER Blue amber is a truly magical gem. Found only in the Dominican Republic, it derives its beauty from certain optical properties that are unique to this specific type of amber. Seen under artificial light, blue amber displays the rich tones found in amber from other regions: honey, gold, warm brown, yellowgreen. Take it out into the sunshine, however, and its true character is revealed: the surface of the stone takes on a shimmering, opalescent blue. Depending on the light and on the particular piece of amber, this can be a pale silvery tint or the rich, strong blue of a cloudless Caribbean sky.

BLUE AMBER

Alec Corday

Blue amber is only formed from the sap of a certain type of prehistoric tree (the Hymenaea protera). It’s thought that the smoke from ancient forest fires infused the resin with the substances that produce the stone’s blue fluorescence.

CAYMANITE An unusual semi-precious stone, caymanite is less showy than other Caribbean gems, though no less lovely. Caymanite takes its name from the Cayman Islands, where the principal deposits are found; it’s rarely encountered outside of the Caribbean. Caymanite is technically a rare form of dolomite, distinguished by finely grained veins and ripples of color. Ranging from red-brown to white, caymanite’s tones are subtle and earthy rather than vivid. HONDURAN BLACK OPAL Unlike the more familiar American and Australian opals, which are produced from fossilized wood and organic material, Honduran black opals are volcanic in origin. They owe their unusual appearance to the region’s darkcolored rocks, which provide a dramatic counterpoint to the opal’s play of color. Honduras produces crystal opals, including red-orange fire opals and black crystal opals. Many of the opals found here are black matrix opals, where porous black basalt has been impregnated with iridescent crystals of silica. www.caymanitebeads.ky

CAYMANITE

Honduran black opals sometimes have distinct geometric patterns, like a harlequin’s costume. These are known as harlequin opals, and they are among the rarest types of opal in existence.

he Chinese revere it as a symbol of good luck and good health. Native Alaskans have long valued its hardness and strength for use as tools and weapons. And modern-day visitors to Alaska can bring it home in the form of ornamental jewelry and carvings.

Rafael Ben Ari / Alamy Stock Photo

It’s the Alaskan state gem — jade — and it represents an exceptionally beautiful souvenir of the 49th state, embodying within it elements of Alaska’s history, mineral wealth and craftsmanship. “Jade” is actually a generic term for two separate minerals, nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite — the source of almost all Alaskan jade — is a tough, fibrous compound, while jadeite is even denser, heavier and rarer. The two “jades” look so much alike that it can take a jeweler’s expert eye to detect the difference. “It’s the only instance in gemology where one word (‘jade’) refers to two different rocks,” says Kathy Flood, author of Waxman’s Jewelry, 4th Edition.

53

Dufry_Tradewinds18_052-57 Jade.indd 53

11/14/18 11:48 AM

Jade is valued most for its smoothness and the clarity of its colors; it may be translucent or opaque. Nephrite is often a deep, rich green, though it can come in lighter shades of green as well as in white, grey, yellow, brown and black; its surface often has a waxy sheen. Though hard in its own right, nephrite is a bit softer and less durable than jadeite and is easier to carve. As the more plentiful of the two forms of jade, it’s also generally less expensive. “The rule of thumb is, if you look at a piece of jade jewelry and don’t get sticker shock, it’s nephrite,” says earth scientist Bob Carlson, president of Green Knight Environmental in St. Louis.

PA RA DE OF JA DE The story of jade in what is now Alaska predates written history. For thousands of years, native Alaskans hunted for water-polished nuggets of jade in Arctic rivers, and traditionally used the hard stone as knives, digging tools and other implements. The first non-native to discover jade in Alaska was U.S. Navy Lieutenant George M. Stoney, who during an 1886 expedition found nephrite in northwestern Alaska’s Kobuk River Valley, above the Arctic Circle. Early 20th-century gold prospectors found more jade in other nearby rivers and creeks.

11/14/18 11:48 AM

During the Second World War, government geologists exploring the Kobuk River Valley found additional huge deposits of jade. By 1945, several tons of nephrite had been removed from the area, and more has been discovered there since, with much of the remainder owned by a consortium of local Inupiat villagers. The region even boasts an entire mountain of dark green jade — called, appropriately, Jade Mountain — whose fragments often wash down into the creeks below. (A memorial plaque made from Jade Mountain jade is embedded in the Washington Monument in Washington, DC.) But even mountains of jade aren’t easy to extract. The Kobuk Valley region is remote and mostly inaccessible except by small plane. With the exception of smaller fragments that wash into the rivers, most Alaskan jade has to be cut from huge boulders, often too heavy for transport. The key invention in the mid-20th century was a portable saw that enabled jade miners to work in the river beds and wilderness areas where the boulders were found, hewing them into pieces small enough to fly to Anchorage or other locations for refining. Still, sawing jade is a laborious and difficult process, requiring diamond-hard blades to grind through the tough, fibrous rock. Visitors to Alaska do have some chances to view jade boulders in their natural state. The most adventurous can venture into the Kobuk Valley itself, where part of the land is a national park — although it has no roads or other services and is strictly for wilderness travel. Much easier is journeying to Anchorage, where a 500-pound jade boulder rests outside the downtown Log Cabin Visitor Information Center. Kobuk Valley Jade

Company in Girdwood is among several stores in the state that display jade boulders and offer demonstrations of how they’re cut and polished. The highest quality jade is typically reserved for making fine jewelry such as rings, earrings, cufflinks, bracelets, necklaces and pendants, which are sold throughout Alaska. They make good anniversary gifts — jade symbolizes 12 years of marriage. While only about a quarter of the jade mined in Alaska is considered of gem quality, you may also find Alaskan jade fashioned into any number of decorative and often practical items such as bookends, tabletops, tiles, figurines, clock faces — even golf tees. “Keep in mind that a lot of jade sold in Alaska actually comes from British Columbia,” says Larry Hoare, owner of Wintercreek Jewelry in Homer. “Watch for a card that says ‘Alaskan jade.’” When buying any jade, look for pieces that aren’t chipped, cracked or scratched; nor should they sparkle or have air bubbles — any such flaw may indicate they’re not jade at all, but some other mineral such as soapstone, serpentine or even glass. High-quality jade should be smooth and cool to the touch. And while green is the most popular color, it isn’t necessarily the most valuable; some green “jade” may even turn out to be dyed quartz. “There’s a very wide range of quality, even with genuine jade,” says Joe Turnbow, owner of Nature’s Jewels in Anchorage, who fashions his own products from Alaskan jade. “To make sure you’re getting real thing, you pretty much have to rely on the store owners. And if you’re not sure of them, see if they’ll let you tap it with a hammer. If it breaks, it’s not jade.”

TO CHOOSE BETWEEN LONDON OR NEW YORK WOULD BE LIKE PICKING A FAVORITE CHILD...SO THE LOGICAL SOLUTION FOR TODAY’S FASHION-FORWARD MAN OR WOMAN IS TO VISIT BOTH AND BRING HOME THE VERY BEST OF EACH.

NEW YORK OR LONDON?

NEW YORK

t’s no secret that these two fashion capitals run neck and neck when it comes to style, each touting top designers, Fashion Week spectacles, iconic fashion houses and an electrifying energy and spirit. To pick the winner would be like picking a favorite child … so the logical solution for today’s fashion-forward man or woman is to visit both and bring home the very best of each.

Ask the average New Yorker about the city’s top shopping destinations and you’ll likely hear about the boutiques of Soho and the retail chains of Herald Square anchored by Macy’s, the world’s largest department store. Madison Avenue, its designer boutiques and the edgy fashions of Barney’s will get an enthusiastic nod, as will the trendy Bloomingdales, Macy’s more affluent cousin and the only department store that Queen Elizabeth asked to visit during her 1976 visit to the Big Apple. But if average isn’t your goal, your destination is Fifth Avenue, New York’s main fashion artery, dotted with the boutiques of the world’s biggest fashion icons and the following Big Apple institutions:

New York and London make it easy to rethink travel mementos, taking the concept from T-shirts and trinkets to lush and luxurious acquisitions: a butter-soft leather hobo bag, a fluid silk dressing gown, a jewel-encrusted gold cuff bracelet, a tailor-made suit of the finest fabric or a lace-embellished head-turning gown. While none of these items is emblazoned with its city of origin, each holds the power to transport us back to the place where it first caught our eye. We pick up the item, we slip into the garment and suddenly we can almost smell the aroma of roasted chestnuts from the street-vendor’s cart outside Saks Fifth Avenue or see the warm, amber lighting that glowed through a shop window at the 19th-century Burlington Arcade.

The favorite department store of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, Bergdorf Goodman offers luxury from A to Zegna. While catering primarily to affluent and sophisticated “ladies who lunch,” the shop dazzles the contemporary fashionista with its designer collections, handbags and a shoe salon that is a Manolo-lover’s dream. And the guys have their very own store, Bergdorf Goodman Men, directly across the street. 63

Occupying a city block and located directly across from the Rockefeller Center, Saks Fifth Avenue is a delightful mix of the classic and the contemporary. Women have the edge here, with menswear the focus of only two of the store’s 10 floors. The building has a full floor dedicated to shoes and a separate “express” elevator that whisks its well-heeled (no pun intended) clientele directly to it. At Tiffany, take home a small luxury, like a sterling silver money clip, or a more extravagant one, like a Patek Philippe watch or flawless solitaire diamond. Free with purchase: that iconic robin’segg-blue Tiffany gift box, the company’s signature since 1845. Harry Winston, the jeweler who acquired the Hope diamond, offers oh-so-civilized service for those in the market for a luxury timepiece, diamonds or other precious stones. Unique among high-end jewelers, Harry Winston operates retail salons in Cannes, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai and other locations, while the actual cutting, polishing and designing of the finished jewel takes place in this New York Winston building. Fashion and fun for the little one, American Girl Place offers high-end dolls (each with an inspiring and empowering “background”) and so much more. “Dress Like Your Doll” clothing, fashion shows, a doll hair salon, design studio and café will delight your favorite little girl.

Greek olive oil is not usually produced in schoolyards, but rather in modern mills with stainless-steel machinery to wash the olives, crush them, knead the paste, separate the solids from the liquids and then separate the oil from the water and (in some factories) filter the oil.

Bastian Parschau / Getty Images

Experienced volunteers such as Stavros Giakoumakis demonstrated how handheld electric harvesters knock olives off the trees onto the netting. Later, they washed, crushed and pressed many of the olives in a portable unit set up in schoolyards so children could see olive oil produced right before their eyes. Citizens, volunteer firefighters and students worked until early December to harvest the olives, producing one metric ton of virgin olive oil for free distribution.

Igor Normann / Alamy Stock Photo

ne sunny October morning, Mayor Giorgos Papanikolaou joined schoolchildren beneath the olive trees on public land in the Athens suburb of Glyfada, where the ground was nearly covered with green netting. Thus began Glyfada’s second annual volunteer olive harvest, which produced olive oil for the needy while educating city children about an important element of Greece’s history, economy and culture: what Homer called “liquid gold.”

ANCIENT POTS, MOSAICS, FRESCOES AND JEWELRY FEATURING OLIVES AND OLIVE TREES ARE TESTAMENTS OF THEIR IMPORTANCE.

TREASURED LEGACY Archaeological evidence shows that olives were first cultivated in Crete around 3500 B.C. and olive oil became a key export in the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. Mythology depicts the goddess Athena winning a competition with Poseidon by producing an olive tree, while Poseidon offered a saltwater spring. Since Athena’s gift was judged more useful, the city of Athens was named for her; she became its patron and the goddess’ tree and its products were considered sacred. Ancient pots, mosaics, frescoes and jewelry featuring olives and olive trees are testaments of their importance. Ancient Greeks used olive oil not only in their food, but also as an offering to the gods and the dead, in perfumes and lamps, as a medicine and to anoint and clean the bodies of the wealthy, especially warriors and athletes. During the ancient Olympic Games, champions were crowned with an olive wreath. At the Panathenaic Games, prizes included a quantity of fine olive oil equal to the value of four-and-a-half years of an Athenian craftsman’s earnings. The renowned ancient Greek physician Hippocrates recommended olive oil as a treatment for dozens of conditions from skin problems to ear infections. Today, numerous clinical studies have confirmed a long list of olive oil’s health benefits. For example, oleocanthal, one of the phenolic compounds in olive oil, is an antiinflammatory agent and an antioxidant that can kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Olive oil lowers total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides without reducing HDL (good) cholesterol. If consumed regularly, olive oil may improve calcium absorption, help decrease blood pressure and help prevent osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, skin cancer and depression. Healthy diets high in olive oil can improve control of blood-sugar levels, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and help prevent strokes.

79

Dufry_Tradewinds18_074-81 Olive Oil.indd 79

11/15/18 11:21 AM

HEALTH AND LUXURY Some of the healthiest olive oils in the world come from Greece, where many producers are taking pains to maximize the quantity of healthy polyphenols in their oils. One producer plucks unripe olives by hand rather than letting the olives ripen and fall as most do from its mountain trees. Earlier harvesting catches olives when they contain the most polyphenols. Another producer’s millers skip the routine step of centrifugation in order to reduce contact with water that could wash away many of their oil’s impressive health benefits.

In 2012, 130 million olive trees covered 20 percent of the cultivated land in Greece. Olive oil provided the main source of income for 700,000 Greek families — as well as supplementary income and a year’s supply of oil for far more.

Greek companies’ efforts to produce high-quality extravirgin olive oils and package them in carefully designed, striking bottles for export have led to numerous awards in major international olive-oil tasting and container-design competitions, attracting the attention of gourmet boutiques and fine restaurants worldwide.

As the world has learned more about olive oil’s health benefits and unique flavors, exports of the liquid gold have increased. Greece is the world’s third-largest oliveoil producer, after Spain and Italy, with the highest percentage of extra-virgin olive oil — approximately 80 percent of all Greek olive oil — in the world. Onethird to two-fifths of all Greek olive oil is exported. The rest — more than 16 kilograms (35 pounds) of olive oil per person each year, 16 times what Americans eat — is consumed domestically.

DELICIOUS TRADITION Olive oil is an essential component of the famously healthy Mediterranean diet, with its focus on fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, legumes and unprocessed grains, plus moderate amounts of wine, cheese and seafood and less meat, poultry and other dairy. Greek recipes for beans and lentils and vegetable stews with cauliflower, green beans or peas, contain so much olive oil that they are known as ladera, or “oily,” dishes (a compliment). Olive oil is used liberally in Greek kitchens, poured over salads and fish, offered as a dip for bread and included in everything from meat and seafood to vanilla cakes and orange-juice cookies. For example, moussaka combines olive oil, eggplant, potatoes, ground beef and a béchamel cream sauce. Boureki

features sliced zucchini and potatoes, a mild, soft white cheese called mizithra, herbs such as spearmint and parsley, and olive oil. Yemista, or stuffed vegetables, include olive oil in their mix of rice, tomato, onion and herbs stuffed inside hollowed-out tomatoes, zucchini or peppers. However, olive oil is more than a food. For example, it is also used in oil lamps and the baptism ceremony in the Greek Orthodox Church. Look around you in Greece and you will see olive trees, olives and olive oil that make its heritage clear. In many parts of the country, an exploration of the landscape takes you past rolling hills covered with olive groves, their silvery green leaves shimmering in the sunlight, undulating in the breeze. 81
