n a mountaintop high in Haiti, trade winds rustle thick tufts of vetiver, releasing a sweet, earthy scent onto the balmy afternoon breeze. When these sturdy grasses, which can grow to the height of a man, are processed, perfumers from around the world will covet vetiver’s rich aroma. Smoky, woody and intense, vetiver oil is a superb base fixative in many legendary perfumes, and this Caribbean nation supplies more than half the world’s supply.

On islands throughout the region, the air is laced with unforgettable scents. The sense of smell is the most powerful memory trigger in the human brain — once a person has visited a Caribbean island, those sunny scents are forever embedded in the memory. THE SPIRIT OF THE CARIBBEAN It’s easy to fall under the spell of Caribbean life. The heady scents of tropical flowers, warm beaches and tropical forests mesmerize the senses. To capture the spirit of the Caribbean, island perfumers draw inspiration from these surroundings. “Art reflects environment,” says perfumer Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, owner of Lili Bermuda Perfumery. And few places on earth have such an ideal climate for growing fragrant botanicals. From the Cayman Islands to St. Martin, from Jamaica to Trinidad, salt-air sea breezes carry the magical scents of the Caribbean islands.

TROPICAL FLOWER PARADISE Vibrantly colored flowers bloom in abundance on Caribbean isles. Take a morning stroll to marvel over tropical hibiscus flowers in hues ranging from lemon yellow to coral red. Lilies and orchids blossom with exotic flair, while wild freesia often blankets islands in the spring, perfuming the warm sea air. “The smell of the wind and the ocean is one I’m always after,” says Ramsay-Brackstone. “I always try to give nuances of our spectacular environment in my fragrances.” As beautiful as a rainbow of flowers might be, in the world of perfumery, pure white flowers are the most sought after. They’re the ones that emit the most powerful aromas. White flowers are usually pollinated at night by nocturnal insects, so the scent these snowy blossoms emit in the dark must be strong to attract insects needed for cross-pollination. Frangipani, jasmine, gardenia and lilies bloom in abundance on the islands and are also cultivated for use in perfume, skincare and simple essential oils.

What better way to extend your memory of the Caribbean? Essential oils are also blended with botanical extracts such as aloe vera, rosemary, polypodium and papaya to create emollient, skin-softening oils that add subtle sheen to the skin, perfect for sun-warmed skin or a fragrant, chakra-balancing massage. SCENTS TO SAVOR Caribbean islands are also perfumed with the sweet nectar of tropical fruits. Coconut oil is used in abundance in perfume and skincare. The juicy, sparkling scents of lime, orange, grapefruit, guava, loquat and pineapple are a resplendent part of the fragrant island life, too. The natural scents of salty air and seaweed are fresh reminders of Caribbean shores. High in mineral and botanical content, seaweed is often harvested for use in cosmetics, as are cocoa butter, mango seed butter and coconut oil — all of which are rich skincare indulgences.

AS BEAUTIFUL AS A RAINBOW OF FLOWE RS MIGHT BE, IN THE WORLD OF PERFUMERY, PURE WHITE FLOWERS ARE THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER.

THE CARIBBEAN CLIMATE IS IDEAL FOR GROWING BOTANICALS THAT YIELD SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PERFUMERY, AROMATHERAPY AND SKINCARE.

Many islands are forested, such as Bermuda. “The finest Bermuda note for fine fragrances is definitely Bermuda cedar,” says Ramsay-Brackstone. “It’s beautiful and refined, an ambery scent with a note of caramel and a dusty finish.” For the eco-tourist, Martinique offers dry woodlands as well as natural rain forests and cloud forests. Other islands host tropical forests, mangrove swamps and elfin forests.

Several islands host commercial timber operations for pine, teak and mahogany. Essential oils for incense, soap oils and fragrance are also produced from these aromatic tree woods. SUGAR AND SPICE Sugar cane, tobacco and spices are among the oldest crops grown in the Caribbean. Made from fermented sugar cane, rum was reportedly created on the island of Barbados, which hosts the world’s oldest recorded rum distillery from 350 years ago. Fragrant spice oils derived from steam distillation include pimento from Jamaica, anise from Trinidad, nutmeg from Grenada and bay from Dominica. “The most Caribbean note for me is bay rum, which is spicy, green and woody,” says Ramsay-Brackstone. “For me this is the smell of the Caribbean.” Bay rum is a perennially popular fragrance made from bay, sweet orange, clove bud and amyris wood. Extracted from the evergreen tree, amyris is often referred to as West Indies sandalwood for its sweet, calming, balsamic nature. Many botanical species are native to the Caribbean, such as pimenta officinalis trees, a member of the myrtle family. These yield pimento berries, also known as allspice, Jamaican pepper or clove pepper. This fragrant dried berry was introduced to Europe in the 16th century by an English botanist, who described it as a combination of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Today, Jamaica produces more than half the world’s supply of allspice. When the trees are in bloom, the sweet, spicy scent suffuses the air.

ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, AROMA Vetiver is one of the most valued oils in the perfumer’s palette, prized for its sweet, earthy, smoky scent. As a fixative, it extends the longevity of more volatile, or fleeting, essential oils. Haiti is the largest producer and exporter of vetiver in the world. The production of essential oils is vitally important to the local economy and to international buyers. Givaudan, a large supplier of essential oils to the international flavors and fragrance industry, provides ongoing technical support to a cooperative in southern Haiti, where several villages in the Les Cayes area have formed an alliance of more than a hundred vetiver farmers. While vetiver is important to the economy and to the perfume industry, the plant has other positive impacts, too. “Vetiver benefits the environment,” says Jean-Pierre Blanchard, chairman and CEO of Caribbean Flavors and Fragrances. He explains that with its deep, penetrating root system, vetiver reduces soil erosion, captures rainfall runoff and increases the infiltration of water into the soil. INDULGE YOUR SENSES The Caribbean climate is ideal for growing botanicals that yield some of the world’s most important essential oils for perfumery, aromatherapy and skincare. These unique aromas, which evoke the essence of the Caribbean, conjure the relaxing lifestyle of tropical isles. On your trip to the Caribbean, indulge your senses and take time to appreciate the precious profusion of botanical life — unlike anywhere else on earth.

ip-line tours are a unique alternative to the typical Caribbean beach break and rum-tasting excursions. Gain a completely different perspective with commanding views of the Caribbean while feeling the adrenaline rush of gliding down zip wires from platform to platform. The lush hillside canopy provides an escape from the tropical heat along with the opportunity to experience the tranquil surroundings of flora, fauna and rich wildlife. And from panoramic views to aerial trams, or suspension bridges to tree houses, no two zip-line adventures are exactly the same. HISTORY OF ZIP LINING Zip lines have been around for over 200 years, originally designed to transport people and supplies across mountains, rivers and treacherous terrain. The idea to string a rope from one point to another and slide across it has evolved into an adventurous and extremely popular excursion throughout the world. Prior to gaining popularity as a shore excursion, zip lines were used in Central America’s rainforests by biologists and botanists. In the 1980s and 1990s, while conducting canopy research, they used them to move from treetop to treetop rather than climbing and descending each tree. It didn’t take long before the idea of a canopy tour was launched in Costa Rica.

Solarysys / Alamy Stock Photo

WHAT TO EXPECT Understanding the physics behind zip lines sheds light on what to expect on the tour. Zip lines vary in length and slope. The steeper and longer the line, the faster the rider will go. Additionally, the heavier the rider, the faster the rider will travel. On the other end of the speed spectrum, a commonly asked and completely valid question is about that whole stopping part. In general, most zip-line excursions use passive braking, which is a speed reduction system that requires no input from the rider. This is explained during the safety briefing prior to the tour along with a demonstration of how to put on the safety harness and helmet. Many zip-line tours take place in a rainforest, so a waterproof jacket and/or bug repellent is recommended. Additionally, closed-toe shoes or sturdy footwear are mandatory. Some of the Caribbean zip-line tours may include a water landing, tubing or simply a transfer to a beach, where it is suggested to bring a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen.

Z IP LINING SAFETY Over the last 25 years, zip-line tours have not only expanded throughout the world, but competition to have the highest, fastest, longest and the most zip lines created the need to ensure public safety. In 1993, the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) was conceived as the international organization to oversee Challenge Course standards, encompassing design, installation, inspection, training and operation of these facilities. Zip-line tour operators, like all of cruising’s excursion providers, are vetted on an individual basis for appropriate insurance and safety precautions. Because of stringent vetting processes, it is highly recommended that all guests book shore excursions directly with the line. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? With so many different zip-line excursions in the Caribbean, how do you choose? For starters, all zipline tours have restrictions such as minimum age (no maximum age), height and weight requirements. Also, understand the details of the tour description. How challenging is the tour in terms of length of zip lines, height of platforms and cables, and the speed achieved? Are

you looking for a tour with one adrenaline-pumping zip or a tour with numerous lines? Additionally, some tours include more than just zip lining. For example, you may experience an aerial tram ride, a chair lift ride, a hike through the rainforest, river tubing, a bobsled ride or waterslides. Do you want gorgeous views of a nearby sea, or feel surrounded by a lush-butconquerable rainforest? (Note to those living the picsor-it-didn’t-happen life: a few zip-line tours do not allow you to take photos.) The Flying Dutchman in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, is touted as the world’s steepest zip line with a 1,050-foot elevation drop over 2,800 feet at speeds up to 56 mph. The tour starts with the 30-minute Pirate Sky Ride chairlift with 360-degree views of the neighboring islands. Around Jamaica, there are nearly ten zip-line tour options offered in various cruise ports. Choices include the added adventures of bobsledding, climbing Dunn’s River Falls, river tubing or even river kayaking. Wingfield Estate, a 17th century sugar plantation in Basseterre, St. Kitts, is home to a zip-line tour where participants fly hands-free on five zip lines up to 1,400 feet in length, reaching speeds up to 50 mph.

11/20/19 1:16 PM

In Castries, St. Lucia, part of one zip-line excursion includes an aerial tram through the rainforest with views of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. To get to the first of ten zip lines, participants must hike 30-minutes downhill. Costa Maya’s Mayá, Lost Mayan Kingdom adventure park includes nine waterslides, a ropes course, a suspension bridge and two zip-line circuits. Each circuit has six zip lines each, spanning a total of 3,000 feet with a water landing at the end. Additionally, the twisty Kukulcan Zip Coaster features an 800-foot flight. Crisscross Belize’s Harvest Caye on three zip lines that soar above the guests below and feature panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the Mayan Mountains. A fourth zip line is a side-by-side ride racing one 1,300 feet long at 40 mph, where participants choose to lay flat in the Superman position or fly sitting upright.

Zip-line tours aren’t exclusive to Caribbean paradises either. In Skagway, Alaska, one zipline excursion features raised balance beams, suspension bridges, a ropes course, and six zip lines through the lush canopy. Comparatively, Icy Point Strait is home to the World’s largest ZipRider, a multi-person ride with speeds up to 60 mph from a 1,300 feet high launch area. Back in warmer weather, a highlight in Kauai is the tandem or sideby-side zip lines as well as the opportunity to zip across a pool and splash into it. Additionally, ropes courses and zip lines can be found on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway, Getaway and Escape. No matter where you strap in, once you taste the sensation of flight and get your first bird’seye view of a town, you’ll wish you had been zipping around the Caribbean your whole life.

um is a joyful spirit. It’s only appropriate that it should seem so happy (especially compared to stoic vodka or genial bourbon) since it’s distilled from sugar cane. There’s a certain sweet indulgence to it no matter how it winds up in your glass. The first rum was distilled shortly after Christopher Columbus brought sugarcane from the Canary Islands to Hispaniola. The cane was boiled to extract the crystals of sugar, while the molasses that was left over became an ingredient in its own right as well as the basis for the Caribbean’s most celebrated spirit. Molasses ferments easily, but the result only becomes palatable after it’s been run through a still. Early versions of the fiery liquor seem to have been named for “rumbullion,” an old slang word for a rowdy uproar — a common sight at the first tippling houses to serve the drink. Navy sailors were soon transporting rum around the world as “grog” (mixed with water and lime) … and buccaneers and merchantmen, in the form of “bumbo” (blended with water, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg). Rum became popular on all levels of society. When George Washington ran for his first elected office in the American colonies, a seat in the Virginia House of Burgesses, he took part in the practice known as “swilling the planters with bumbo.” Records show his election agent distributed 144 gallons of drink — one gallon for every two votes he received. Today, rum styles vary from the dry clarity of white rum (like Bacardi Silver or Crystal) through the amber richness of gold rums (like Appleton Estate VX or Bounty) to the dense, buttery dark rums (like Myers’s or Admiral Rodney). Extra aging results in a premium añejo rum or a rhum vieux, a sipping drink on a par with fine cognac or liqueur (try St. Lucia Distillers’ own 1931).

f you’re a good citizen who recycles empty plastic water bottles, congratulations on doing your part. Along with millions of others, you are keeping bottles from polluting our oceans, beaches and landfills. One plastic water bottle alone takes about a thousand years to decompose. Each year, Americans send 35 billion plastic bottles to landfills. But, have you ever wondered what happens to that plastic water bottle after tossing it in the recycling bin? Antimicrobial Fiber Solutions (AFSapparel.com) knows exactly what happens and has turned more than 450 million plastic water bottles into fashionable apparel, hats and totes. For 15 years, AFS has been making custom apparel and headwear from recycled plastic bottles. What? Really? How do they do that? The simple explanation: The lid and paper are removed from the bottle, and the bottle is shredded into plastic chips. The chips then become plastic beads, and the beads become yarn. The yarn becomes polyester thread. And then an exceptional fabric is woven from that thread and can be blended with recycled cotton to make garments such as polo shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and many other items — including headwear.

AFS’S SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE HAS HELPED KEEP MILLIONS OF PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES OUT OF THE WORLD’S OCEANS AND LANDFILLS. AFS partners with Repreve, a company that recycles water bottles. AFS creates apparel containing 30% to 100% RPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) which is the product of recycled plastic bottles. The headwear or clothing made can use anywhere from 3 to 22 water bottles. It can take up to 8 water bottles to produce a polo shirt or 3 plastic bottles to make a baseball cap. Over the years, AFS’s sustainable practice has helped keep millions of plastic water bottles out of the world’s oceans and landfills. AFS creates custom products for retail lines such as SCALES, which makes performance clothing for water sports. One example is the UPF 50+ sun shirt that protects your skin from the sun’s harsh rays. All items, from swimwear to caps to apparel, are quick-drying, antimicrobial (to resist odor), stain-resistant, moisturewicking and sustainable. The backbone of the AFS story is SUSTAINABILITY.

AFS also works with Norwegian Cruise Line and their Sail & Sustain Environmental Program. While continuing to offer top-notch guest experiences on board and on land, Norwegian Cruise Line knows that fostering a culture of awareness and respect for our planet’s natural resources is paramount.

54

The companies and organizations that AFS work with share those same values. Their practices — such as recycling their employees’ uniforms and clothing, again and again — prove their dedication. oes stargazing make you feel small? It shouldn’t — you’re part of a culture that has found a way to read the night sky and see it for what it really is. And there’s perhaps no better place than on an Alaska cruise to see some of its most amazing offerings. Timing is everything. A late setting sun in Alaska means that the stars don’t come out until around midnight in June and July. A rising full moon is one of the most beautiful sights in

nature, but our bright satellite can bleach the night sky, so the week leading up to the new moon is the best time to stargaze. To see an incredible night sky, be sure to dark-adapt your eyes. It takes about 20 minutes for the pupils to dilate, and don’t even think about switching on a flashlight or looking at your smartphone — that’s the quickest way to go star-blind. All you need is patience and darkness, and the universe will be revealed.

FIND THE BIG DIPPER Everyone’s heard of the Big Dipper, but can you locate it? Its seven bright stars are a permanent fixture of the Northern Hemisphere’s night sky. “Spring Up, Fall Down” is how to remember its position: in April and May, the Big Dipper will be high up in the sky, almost exactly above you, but by September it will be much closer to the horizon.

The Big Dipper is a big deal — it’s the nearest star cluster to our solar system, just 18 light years away. As you look past it, you’re gazing out of our galaxy and into the universe beyond. NOW FACE NORTH There is only one star in the night sky that appears never to move. Go back to the Big Dipper, and find the two stars — called Dubhe and Merak — on the outside of the bowl. Now draw a line from Merak (at the bottom of the bowl) through Dubhe, and go five times the distance to the next bright star. You can’t miss Polaris, known as the North Star, because it appears to sit directly above the North Pole. Find Polaris and draw an imaginary line to the horizon, and you have found north. Since Earth’s axis points at Polaris, this star has a secret: Its height above the northern horizon gives away your distance from the equator. Hold your hand at arm’s length and stretch your index finger and little finger as far from each other as you can. The span is 10°. Put your little finger on Polaris and you can measure roughly how many degrees high in the sky it is. It will change during the cruise. For example, Vancouver is at 49° North latitude, Juneau 58° N, and Hubbard Glacier 60° N.

WITNESS A MAGICAL MOONRISE If you’ve never seen a deep orange full moon peeking above the eastern horizon as the sun sets in the west, now’s your chance. A beautiful and much-underrated natural wonder that happens once each month, the rising full moon appears very large when near the horizon, and moves surprisingly quickly. It creates a real sense of drama as it rises, rapidly becoming too bright to look at. Don’t worry if there are some clouds on the horizon. That can actually improve the spectacle, as the clouds will have a beautiful moon-glow. In 2020, watch out for a magical moonrise in Alaska at dusk on April 7, May 7, June 5, July 4, August 3 and September 2. And two weeks before or after these dates, look for a slim crescent moon visible near the sun just after it sets.

The Milky Way, seen through the Summer Triangle

SEE THE SUMMER TRIANGLE Three bright stars across the Milky Way dominate the night sky after sunset from mid-June until fall in Alaska. The vast Summer Triangle consists of the bright stars Vega, Deneb and Altair at the elongated bottom. This is no equal partnership: Vega is 27 light years away and Altair just 17, but Deneb is more than 1,400 light years away, and one of the most distant stars you can see with the naked eye. The Summer Triangle is at its best high in the southern sky in late August and September, and it’s worth finding because the Milky Way streams right through it. MARVEL AT THE MILKY WAY Perhaps the most beguiling sight of all in summer skies is the Milky Way flowing overhead. It’s most easily seen after dark from May through September, and in Alaska that means staying up late. You won’t regret it. Take 20 minutes to darkadapt your eyes and you’ll see the reflected light of more than 100 billion stars brighten toward the southern horizon. Why

is it brighter to the south? That’s the middle of the spiral galaxy that we live in — the galactic center point. CATCH A “WANDERING STAR” Five planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn — are surprisingly easy to find because the solar system is flat like a pancake. Find the east-west path that the sun took through the daytime sky, and you’ve identified what’s called the ecliptic, which is the path that all the planets travel back and forth along. As with stars, they rise in the east — first Jupiter in the constellation of Sagittarius, followed closely by Saturn in Capricorn and Mars in Aquarius. Each of the outer planets reach their maximum brightest once a year when Earth gets between them and the sun: Venus will be at its brightest and highest in the morning sky in July, when it rises in the very early hours, while Jupiter and Saturn will look their best in July, and Mars in October. A bright planet is a great sight to signal the start of a stargazing session under Alaska’s intoxicating night skies.

HISTORY BEHIND THE MYSTERY The concept of aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. In fact, Greek physician Hippocrates is believed to have used his own concoction of oils for healing benefits, claiming “the way to health was through aromatic baths and massages,” according to the Journal of Holistic Nursing. By the late 1930s, French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefossé, who discovered the healing potential of lavender in treating burns, coined a name for the concept: Aromatherapy.

ould you believe you could improve sleep, relieve stress and smell fresh with a couple drops of lavender? What about boost immunity and destroy odor-causing bacteria with a dab of tea tree oil? How about increase your concentration and energy with a splash of peppermint? These aren’t magic potions. Welcome to the world of aromatherapy, an age-old holistic health treatment believed to relieve, and sometimes cure, ailments and stressors through the use of natural plant extracts. Commonly produced in the form of sweet-smelling oils, aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest “new-old” trend.

Years later, the beauty world has seen a resurgence in the popularity and inevitable curiosity surrounding aromatherapy and the use of essential oils. In 2017, the global aromatherapy market generated $1.2 billion, with U.S. sales surging about 200 percent since 2012, according to a Reuters report. As consumers push pills and chemicals aside, and instead hunt for natural ways to deal with stress, anxiety and depression, essential oils have taken center stage. “Most people aren’t fully familiar with the concept of using essential oils to treat themselves,” says Vicky Serra, owner of Miami-based aromatherapy boutique, Alma. “But the rise in popularity is a sign of the times: People want to eat healthier and live active lifestyles. Having a natural skin and health routine goes hand-in-hand.”

GREEK PHYSICIAN HIPPOCRATES IS BELIEVED TO HAVE USED HIS OWN CONCOCTION OF OILS FOR HEALING BENEFITS, CLAIMING “THE WAY TO HEALTH WAS THROUGH AROMATIC BATHS AND MASSAGES,” ACCORDING TO THE JOURNAL OF HOLISTIC NURSING .

KNOWING THE ESSENTIALS At its core, aromatherapy works through the smell and skin absorption of essential oils. For devotees, there are more than a dozen products that’ll get the job done, from diffusers and inhalers, to bathing salts, body oils and creams, massage lotions, hot and cold compresses, and even clay masks. The potential benefits of inhaling a whiff of eucalyptus or lathering a drop of lemon run the gamut of improved mood to decreased anxiety. One thing to keep in mind: Essential oils aren’t FDAregulated yet, which means a product that claims to be an essential oil may not be the real thing. Steer clear of the widely used “aromatherapy” label, and instead look for 100 percent pure and organic oils free of additives and synthetic chemicals. Bonus points if a label includes “steam distilled” or “therapeutic grade.” With more than 100 different types of essential oils –– ranging from orange and rosemary, to cinnamon, bergamot, lemongrass, and sage –– finding the right one for you will require some research. Remember: Every essential oil has its own list of potential healing benefits, and, sometimes, oils can be combined for an even greater effect.

75

Dufry_Tradewinds19_070-76 FEATURE Aromatherapy 101.indd 75

11/20/19 10:39 AM

“If you can believe that an essential oil will help you, then you have a greater chance of that happening,” Serra says. “If you don’t believe in it, then at the end of the day, you’re getting and using a product that smells amazing. I think essential oils have powerful healing effects, and that’s what sets them apart from fragrances. But at the end of the day, there’s a mental aspect that goes into it. What I can tell you is essential oils definitely don’t hurt.”

Top to bottom: skaman306 / Getty Images; Ingram Image

GAUGING THE EFFECT The effectiveness behind aromatherapy remains somewhat of a mystery. Research is limited and, for now, products aren’t regulated. In general, aromatherapy is “thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions,” according to Mayo Clinic. Potential benefits cover pain management, improved sleep, even bacteria fighting and immunity boosting. Your best bet is making an appointment with a certified aromatherapist who will work with you to find the right oils to treat your symptoms. Don’t know where to look? The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy offers a database of therapists, organized by location and specialty.

CITIZEN READY, SET, DIVE Citizen is pairing up with its newest brand partner. Peter Miller, an Emmy-nominated TV host, producer, philanthropist, professional angler and three-time world sailfish champion, is Citizen’s brand spokesperson for the Promaster Aqualand. Starting with an iconic name and reinvented construction, Citizen’s Promaster Aqualand is an ISOcompliant watch whose prized features are a set of underwater monitors that allow divers to explore the ocean in safety and in style, to depths beyond 200M. The underwater monitors include a rapid ascent alarm, an auto start dive mode and a power reserve indicator. The sporty watch’s stainlesssteel case is accented by a color that mimics the ocean. A blue polyurethane strap complements the blue dial and blue-and-red bezel. Promaster uses Citizen’s proprietary Eco-Drive technology, which means the Aqualand will never need a battery. A solar cell under the dial can charge the watch in any light. Citizen’s eco-friendly message aligns with those of Miller, a wildlife and environmental conservationist. An expert fisherman by trade, Miller works closely with the Everglades Foundation, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Captains for Clean Water. Through his efforts, these organizations have been able to raise millions of dollars for conservation. Miller’s latest endeavor is Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller, which airs weekly on the Discovery Channel and reaches more than 97 million households.

FREDERIQUE CONSTANT CELEBRATING “CONSTANT SOURCES OF FASCINATION: BOATS, CARS AND WATCHES

Frederique Constant, inspired by the clean lines of a classic wooden boat, has partnered with the Riva Historical Society to present the Runabout Collection. The limited edition Runabout Automatic includes a see-through caseback that displays the inner workings of the FC-350 movement, a simple blue dial in a stainless-steel case and a blue leather strap. Its gift box includes a miniature Riva boat. When constructing a boat, an expert builder will address his trade with passion, precision and artistry. A skilled watchmaker approaches his craft in the same way. Frederique Constant, a Swiss watch brand founded in 1988, recognizes and appreciates the design similarities shared by both crafts.

Similarly, Frederique Constant pays homage to the design and luxury of the Austin-Healey automobile. The Vintage Rally Healey automatic watch boasts 2,888 pieces, with its rose-gold chronograph coming with a blue dial and matching leather strap. It comes in a gift box with a miniature green Healey.

OVERJOYED What happens on the top deck doesn't always stay on the top deck. Not when it's the top deck of Norwegian Joy, where the thrilling Aqua Park offers twists, turns and loops over the side of the ship. As you can see, there are plenty of other fun adventures and even relaxing aquatic moments to be found on deck up here, but when your plunge takes you literally over the edge, you'll be telling everyone back home about it!
