Coming soon is our next generation of ships, on order for delivery every year from 2022 to 2027. For now, as construction begins at Fincantieri S.p.A, the renowned Italian shipyard, we’re calling the class of 140,000-gross-ton ships “Leonardo,” referencing da Vinci for his sheer genius and artistic talent. That’s a hint about what innovations these futuristic, 3,300-passenger ships will hold. These ships are slightly smaller than the Breakaway- and BreakawayPlus class so that they can visit ports around the world that are not accessible to larger ships. The ships will boast a next-level connection to the sea, including wide outdoor spaces. Keep an eye out for more exciting details including brand-new itineraries. As we launch new ships, we don’t forget the other extraordinary ships that make our fleet so exceptional. With Norwegian Edge, we’ve committed to bringing high standards to the seas fleetwide. Several ships have already undergone extensive refurbishments that include upgrade accommodations and new or enhanced bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. Earlier this year, for instance, Norwegian Getaway received an extensive refurbishment during a two-week drydock in Brest, France. Added was the popular rock ‘n’ roll–themed entertainment venue, Syd Norman’s Pour House (which had debuted after a refurbishment of Norwegian Breakaway in 2018). Norwegian Getaway was also enhanced with an art collection that includes an installation by contemporary artist Eric Levy in the atrium and a striking original piece by acclaimed Spanish artist Eduardo Arranz-Bravo, hull artist for Norwegian Encore, in The Haven. A BEAUTIFUL FLOATING CANVAS Norwegian Cruise Line ships serve as giant floating canvases for the work of renowned contemporary artists. For Norwegian Encore, the cruise line tapped leading Spanish artist Eduardo Arranz-Bravo, who created a fanciful hull design with ribbons of color stretching from bow to stern. Anyone seeing the artwork will know that Norwegian Encore is a ship full of life.
Born in Barcelona in 1941, Arranz-Bravo began experimenting with abstract art at age 17. His style has been referred to by some as “futuristic,” with comparisons often made to other celebrated Catalonian artists such as Gaudi, Dalí, Picasso and Miró. Arranz-Bravo has received accolades around the world for his modern abstract style. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings President and CEO Frank del Rio is among the fans and is an avid collector of ArranzBravo’s works. Under del Rio’s direction, ArranzBravo is represented in the original art collections on select ships of Norwegian Cruise Line’s sister brands, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises — and now on the hull of Norwegian Encore. The Arranz-Bravo Foundation, located just outside Barcelona in L’Hospitalet, was awarded to the artist by the Spanish Government in 2009. He was one of five artists to create artworks and postage stamps for 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and he represented Spain at the 39th Venice Biennale in 1980. His works are on view at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Museum of Modern Art) in Madrid, and other museums around the world. Thanks to Arranz-Bravo’s creation, Norwegian Encore will stand out at sea, and in all the destinations the ships visits.

The Texas-born superstar with the winning personality recently made her daytime TV debut with the nationally syndicated “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on NBC. It’s the latest achievement for a down-home gal who burst onto the music scene after winning the first “American Idol” season in 2002 and quickly captured the hearts of legions of fans. Embraced for her sassy spirit and big voice, Clarkson’s debut single, “A Moment Like This,” went to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Multiple hits have followed, including “Since U Been Gone,” “Miss Independent” and "Because of You,” helping Clarkson to achieve worldwide sales of more than 25 million albums and 36 million singles. Her eighth and most recent studio album is the Grammy-nominated “Meaning of Life.”
Her achievements in music have earned her three Grammy Awards and a host of other accolades. She was the first artist to top Billboard's pop, adult contemporary, adult pop, country and dance charts. In both 2018 and 2019 she served as host of the Billboard Music Awards. Clarkson has shared her musical skills and encouraging personality with new artists on NBC’s Emmy Award–winning show The Voice, where she has nurtured the winning contestant for two seasons of her first three seasons as a coach. A HALF-CENTURY OF INNOVATIVE CRUISING Established in 1966 by one of Norway’s most respected shipping companies, Oslo-based Klosters Rederi A/S, Norwegian Cruise Line has always sought to deliver extraordinary guest experiences by pushing the boundaries of traditional cruising. ENCORE How do you top the exciting feature of a top-of-ship race track, as introduced on Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Bliss? You make it longer and boost the action. Friends and family can cheer for their favorite driver from new, covered viewing stands in the center of the action — and the fans have a new role in the race track action as well. Building a Racing Legacy
When Norwegian Cruise Line set out to be cuttingedge, it found the ticket in the form of the familyfriendly attraction of go-kart racing. But putting a race track on a cruise ship was not an easy task. After much back and forth with the Meyer Werft shipyard, Norwegian’s own ship design team and electric go-kart manufacturer RiMo Germany, the first race track at sea successfully debuted on Norwegian Joy and was an immediate guest favorite. The race track grew on sister ship Norwegian Bliss, and now Norwegian Encore is home to Encore Speedway, the longest and most challenging race track at sea. The track on Norwegian Encore has 10 turns (compared to eight on Norwegian Bliss) and extends 13 feet out over the sea at four points. If you don’t drive yourself, sit in a double car and experience the joy of racing.
Racing Strategy
On the Norwegian Encore Speedway, drivers pull out of the pit lanes to begin their first 350-meter lap. At first, you’re at half-speed as you get used to the track and get a handle of the steering wheel. When you pass the checkered line, you’re full-on racing! You can experiment with the four different speed settings, going for the experience that you want — whether you’re a slow-and-sure novice or a speed-seeking advanced driver. For those looking to improve their time, a “turbo boost” button on the steering wheel gives you the speed you need to overtake other drivers at more than 30 miles per hour. Plus, unique to Norwegian Encore, you can get a little help from your friends in the viewing area. Each race involves 10 cars. As soon as they return to the pit, another race begins.
Experience Racing from the Stands
Even if you’re not behind the wheel, you can get into the racing action from a new covered viewing area in the center of the track. Optimal viewing comes with the added bonus of laser guns mounted to the viewing area ledge, allowing spectators to interact with the experience. Choose your favorite drivers and lend them a hand.
Hear the Engines Roar
The cars on the Norwegian Encore Speedway are electric and environmentally friendly, both in terms of running clean and not creating noise pollution. But they also satisfy a desire on the part of drivers to hear the engines roar. Thanks to specially designed built-in speakers, when you push the accelerator, you hear the vroom as revs increase; when you go slower, the sound decreases. Only you can hear it, but the experience is no less thrilling.

The minimum height requirement for drivers is 55 inches. Double cars are available for those bringing a non-driving friend along for the ride. This includes youngsters old enough to fit comfortably into the seat. Before you hit the track, it’s required that you watch a safety video and get a briefing on track rules and regulations. Wearing a four-point harness and helmet is required for all drivers and passengers. Book your racing experience on board using the mobile app, the interactive TV in your stateroom or touchscreens located around the ship. There is a per-ride fee, with unlimited ride passes also available. COOL KEEPSAKE! ENCORE FOR ACTION! The Ultimate Laser Tag Adventure
Norwegian Bliss introduced the first open-air laser tag experience at sea. On Norwegian Encore, you can compete in the largest open-air laser tag experience at sea, as the 9,150-square-foot arena is nearly 50 percent larger than on Bliss. In its new location in the aft of the ship, the theme is The Lost City of Atlantis rediscovered — an experience enhanced by state-of-the-art laser guns and an augmented reality gaming component that allows participants to view virtual artifacts.

VR Wonderland
The race track is a signature attraction on Norwegian Encore, but we’re betting there will also be considerable buzz as well about Galaxy Pavilion, Building on the cutting-edge technology on Norwegian Joy, the pavilion features VR (virtual reality) attractions in an indoor, 10,000-square-foot oasis of fun. Even before they visit the ship’s real race track, racing fans can put on a VR headset and practice their skills on a row of eight Driving Simulators, each with a screen allowing spectators to view the experience. For something completely different, Dark Ride is a 7D multi-sensory experience where guests are immersed in on-screen action while using “light blasters” to compete against each other for the highest score. With Super Keeper, players of all skill levels can kick a real soccer ball against a robotic goalie. More interested in a brainy sort of challenge? The Escape Room has holograms and projection mapping, challenging guests as they work together in teams to find artifacts, solve clues and ultimately escape the room. Additionally, a 10-foot-by-10-foot VR maze can be explored (and hopefully conquered) as well.
Up to Deck 16, the Aqua Park delivers wet thrills so you can get your kicks while you cool off on a sunny day. Those who dare can whoosh up 159 feet, with 11 feet over the ocean, before whirling down to the deck below on the high-speed Ocean Loops, our doubleloop waterslide. The loops are see-through so you don’t miss any views! On Aqua Racer, our passenger-favorite tandem slide, guests race side-by-side in inner tubes for more than 360 feet. A translucent section delivers views (if you dare open your eyes) as you twist and turn to the finish line. Youngsters can cool off and have a blast exploring splash pads, water cannons, tipping buckets and slides in the Kids’ Aqua Park. For relaxing in the sun or shade, visit the Aqua Park’s two spacious pools or lounge with views in one of the six infinity hot tubs. Take a break in laid-back style at American Diner.

Our stylish, sophisticated casinos have been recognized as best in the industry, and the Norwegian Encore Casino is another winner. ENCORE Norwegian Encore is about fun for the whole family, with kids being an important part of the equation. Norwegian Cruise Line’s awardwinning complimentary youth program — Splash Academy — caters to cruisers ages 3 to 12.
Centrally located on Deck 5 and near cabins and suites designed with families in mind, the colorful Splash Academy is staffed by our experienced team of counselors. A shared space boasts an interactive dance floor and large video screens, and there are separate age-appropriate play areas for Turtles (ages 3 to 5), Seals (ages 6 to 9) and Dolphins (ages 10 to 12). Friends and older siblings can visit too during the Freestyle Freeplay sessions. Fun activities at Splash Academy include games such as dodgeball and edible craft projects such as cupcake decorating, all designed to create happy memories in a safe environment while encouraging creativity. But there’s even more fun for the young set with our Circus Skills and Show, an opportunity for kids to have a blast while they gain such skills as juggling and plate spinning. Kids are also encouraged to learn tumbling and lasso skills, and they get to show off what they have learned in a grand finale performance for their friends and family: the Splashtacular Extravaganza. Because Norwegian Cruise Line is committed to bettering the environment, there are activities designed to get kids

thinking about clean oceans. Kids also enjoy their own theme nights such as Pirate Night and Superhero Night, complete with costumes. Parents can register, drop-off and pick-up their children using the Splash Academy’s e-Youth tablet and/or iPad-based electrometric registration system. This system requires whoever is picking up the child to register both their keycard and the child’s keycard and to provide a password that parents choose and file at registration for an added level of safety. Because we believe in the virtues of play for all ages, for our youngest cruisers and their parents, there is a dedicated, colorful Guppies playroom with open-play hours and sensory-play activities for parents and their babies, hosted by the Early Years Coordinators. These include messy play, exploration, movement and music. The Guppies Nursery, for ages 6 months to three years, is a colorful, fanciful space where an experienced nursery team leads age-appropriate activities such as sensory-based play and music and movement. There is also a quiet area with cribs for nap time. Parents are invited during special hours each day to participate in parent-child activities. Teens ages 13 through 17 enjoy their own space on Norwegian Encore. The Entourage teen club is on Deck 5, near the ship’s super fun video arcade. Here they can lounge in plush furnishings when not enjoying gaming stations, foosball and air hockey; of course, they can also hit the dance floor under neon lighting. At night, it’s the hottest teen night club at sea! Theme nights such as University of E (College Night), Battle of Two Teams, Social Media Night and Eclipse boost the fun even further.

The expanded dining scene on Norwegian Encore features enhanced menus with delicious tastes around every corner.
“Norwegian Encore will deliver one of the most diverse culinary offerings on board within the fleet, providing our guests with more options to choose from,” says Wesley Cort, Vice President of Food and Beverage Operations. “We are excited to continue to surprise our guests with new experiences, and look forward to welcoming them on board Norwegian Encore.” The new first-class Italian cuisine experience on Norwegian Encore has fans shouting “Bravo!” Onda by Scarpetta was developed specially for the ship in partnership with the LDV Hospitality group, creators of the critically acclaimed Scarpetta in New York City and throughout the United States as well as Sette at the Bvlgari Hotel in London. Scarpetta is already familiar to Miami fans, with a AAA Four Diamond Award–winning Scarpetta Restaurant located at The Fontainebleau Miami Beach. The elevated dining experience at Onda on Norwegian Encore takes place in a refined, contemporary space, created with an Italian aesthetic and accents such as walnut and Italian Calacatta marble. Diners enjoy expansive views, whether dining indoors or outdoors on The Waterfront.
LDV Hospitality is a boutique hospitality group that creates unique restaurant and cocktail bar experiences inspired by la dolce vita — “the good life.” That philosophy will hold true at Onda, where the company’s first seagoing restaurant will share the urbane restaurant’s philosophy of creating bold flavors by amplifying seasonal ingredients. Signature pastas are paired with the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients. Spaghetti tomato and basil is nothing less than a classic, in both its simplicity and taste. The menu will feature Scarpetta’s most popular dishes as well as new creations. “Our teams have been collaborating to ensure we are delivering the high-caliber experience our guests and theirs expect of us,” says Cort. “We even sent our chefs and service staff to train at the flagship location in New York, where they were able to get fully immersed in how they deliver their well-known experience and cuisine.”
The name Scarpetta is derived from the Italian expression fare la scarpetta, which means to savor a meal to the last bite. The word onda means wave in Italian, making it the perfect name for Scarpetta’s first restaurant at sea. 55

Under the stunning chandelier on Deck 6, stop and smell the chocolate flowing from the oversized fountain. That’s the calling card for Coco’s, where day and night you can indulge in such treats as chocolate bonbons, gelato, milkshakes, over-the-top ice cream sundaes, pastries, waffles and crepes. You can grab a sweet treat or linger to savor the extravagance. The flowing chocolate appears in mini-chocolate fountains, complete with dipping accouterments, delivered to your table. The Bake Shop on Deck 8 is another sweet spot on Norwegian Encore. Here you can indulge in handmade truffles, French macarons and gourmet cupcakes. If you want your treat of the frozen variety, stop by next door on The Waterfront at Dolce Gelato. You can lick your scoops as you admire the sea.

Rest your head on a king-sized bed topped by a pillow mattress. The sitting area is outfitted with a sofa bed. For families, special mini-suites are located near the children’s facilities. Many of these mini-suites include bathtubs. BALCONY STATEROOMS are done up with such amenities as wood shelving, a generous-sized sink and a nifty ladies’ shaving bar in the shower. Family Balcony Staterooms come with a queen-sized bed for mom and dad and an upper bed and a single sofa bed for the kids. OCEANVIEW STATEROOMS show off views through large windows. Conveniently located near the Splash Academy, Family Oceanview Staterooms have such family-friendly features as a double-sink in the bathroom, bathtub and extra room for storage. The book is by Tony Award–winning Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein and based on a 2005 British movie of the same name, which had been based on a real-life story.
In the show, Charlie Price is trying to save his family’s struggling, fourth-generation shoe production factory. He forms an unlikely partnership with Lola, a fabulous cabaret performer and drag queen. In establishing a line high-heeled boots for men — the real-life line was called Divine Footwear — the two very different individuals embrace their differences, find friendship and save the business … in a showstopping way. The big-hearted feel-good show was a huge hit with audiences. It premiered in Chicago and made its Broadway debut in April 2013. Tony Award–winner Jerry Mitchell did the choreography. The show received 13 Tony Award nominations during the 2013 awards season, more than any other Broadway show that year. The five awards garnered included both the Best Musical and Best Score awards for Lauper, who made history as the first woman to win alone in the category. The cast album for the musical debuted at Number 51 on the Billboard 200 chart. The show was also a hit in London’s West End, where it won multiple Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical. Expect to be out of your seat, begging for an encore!

IT’S A PUB PARTY! On the main stage in the Encore Theater is The Choir of Man, introduced on Norwegian Escape in 2018. The show has quickly become a passenger favorite, the highest rated show in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, and it’s easy to see why. So how do you get to perform on Norwegian Encore?
Norwegian Cruise Line auditions performers from Broadway, the West End and elsewhere around the world. Before these talented ladies and gentlemen step foot on a ship, they rehearse at Norwegian Creative Studios, a state-of-the-art studio space in the Riverview section of Tampa, Florida. The 46,000-square-foot warehouse space looks nondescript on the outside, but inside it has been transformed into six separate performance areas replicating shipboard theaters. It’s a place where the magic of live theater unfolds. Imagine more than 200 talented singers, dancers and production staff working hard to prepare for the best shows on the high seas.

Just 600 nautical miles off the eastern seaboard, the relatively tiny island can feel worlds away. Peaceful and prosperous, Bermuda shows off its British heritage with pastel houses and neatly landscaped gardens. The ship will dock at King’s Wharf in the Royal Naval Dockyard, only steps from inviting shops, restaurants, museums and other attractions. The discovery of Bermuda was actually by accident when British colonists got shipwrecked on their way to Virginia in 1609. They weren’t impressed by the island and didn’t linger. In fact it wasn’t until the 19th century that tourism became a thing here, attracting wealthy Americans trying to escape the winter. In the mid-1900s, the British Navy built a Royal Navy Dockyard at the western end of the island that was ultimately used to protect Allied merchant ships during both World Wars. When the military moved out of King’s Wharf after World War II, the Royal Naval Dockyard was repurposed as a tourist-friendly pedestrian area and later also a cruise ship terminal. It’s where your ship will dock, offering you convenient access to shopping, restaurants and entertainment, as well as transportation to the rest of the island. In and around the Royal Navy Stockyard, you’ll find all kinds of enticements including a craft
market and art center and a local Farmer’s Market. For sale are delicious rum cakes, craft items and paintings, all of which make wonderful souvenirs or gifts for those back home. If you’re heading to Hamilton, you’ll find that Front Street is lined with shops selling upscale gifts including British imports and souvenirs while Reid Street is home to TABS (which stands for The Authentic Bermuda Shorts), with designs for men, women and children in cotton fabrics. St. George boasts plenty of quaint boutiques such as The Bermuda Perfumery, where two-dozen scents are created for men and women using such ingredients as freesia and rose. The perfumery also has a branch in Hamilton. There is easy transportation right from the Royal Navy Dockyard. You can catch a ferry or tour boat to St. George and Hamilton. On narrated tours, you’ll get a history lesson learning, for instance, how St. George was one of the first English settlements in the Americas. The ferry to Hamilton drops you off in the center of downtown, where you might explore the broad streets, visit museums such as the Bermuda National Gallery, and refresh with a drink in one of the pubs. Art lovers will want to head to nearby Paget to visit the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, where the works include paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe and Winslow Homer as well as galleries devoted to Bermuda-born artists.

Those curious about that Bermuda Triangle can let their imaginations run wild in the darkness of night on an exciting Bermuda Triangle Evening Cruise. You board a glass-bottomed boat outfitted with floodlights so you can see under the sea and explore the depths teeming with unusual coral formations and fish. There’s also commentary from the captain about disappearances in this mysterious patch of sea.

Oh, those pink sands! You can dip your feet in the sand at nine public beaches near King’s Wharf, including Bermuda’s famous Tobacco Bay, a national park. It’s a place you’ll want to linger before or after your cruise, exploring museums, walking in Central Park, seeing a Broadway show, shopping, dining or just taking in the excitement.
Trace your own family’s roots with a visit to Ellis Island, where between 1892 and 1954 more than 12 million immigrants entered the country. You’ll see amazing views of the Statue of Liberty from the open decks of Norwegian Encore, but you can also visit Liberty Island by ferry. Take in classic New York landmarks such as the Empire State Building, where the city unfolds from a dizzying height. The Chrysler Building also affords thrilling views. Tours of the United Nations take in the General Assembly Hall and the council chambers and provide a unique, worldly perspective. Make time for a more somber moment at the 9/11 Memorial Museum and the World Trade Center memorial fountains. Take in a lighter glimpse of history at Radio City Music Hall, the largest indoor theater in the world; the marquee is a must-do photo opp. Stay for shows including holiday presentations by the high-kicking Rockettes, the godmothers of our first Breakaway-class ship, Norwegian Breakaway. A fun place to visit with families is the bustling South Street Seaport area, with its maritime museum and more than 100 restaurants and shops. Or astound the kids with the dinosaur fossils among the massive collection at the American Museum of Natural History. The New York restaurant scene deserves its international acclaim, whether you splurge on a fivestar experience or dive into a mile-high corned beef sandwich. Speaking of excess, check out Carmine’s for Italian food in family-style portions.
A night at the theater is an essential part of every New York City vacation, whether you are a devoted theater-lover or a first-time attendee. Head to Midtown Manhattan’s famous Broadway theater district, or 20 blocks north to Lincoln Center, to see what’s playing. You’ll find long-running shows, new musicals and drama every night of the week. Look for recent Tony Award–winners, or treat yourself to classics. Buying tickets in advance of your trip for such popular shows as Hamilton and The Lion King is highly recommended. Or visit one of the TKTS booths for discounts of up to 50 percent on dayof-the-show tickets (the selection changes daily). There are also walking tours where you can learn the history of Broadway, its stars and its theaters. Manhattan is a shopper’s heaven; it doesn’t get better than this! Shopaholics will want to head to upscale Fifth and Madison avenues, home to well-known designer stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany & Co. The neighborhoods of Greenwich Village and SoHo serve up boutiques, galleries, restaurants and cafés, and wandering these areas looking for unique finds is a particular delight on a sunny day. If time allows, the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn is the trendsetter’s favorite. Cobble Hill, Greenpoint and Fort Greene are also happening hipster-shopping havens. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself shopping for extra luggage to pack your purchases. New York City is a wanderer’s delight, so whether you navigate multi-national neighborhoods by foot, by cab or by tour bus, try to take in a cross-section. And don’t forget Central Park, with its 843 acres of landscaped and recreational areas. Things to do in the park are endless, including a zoo, carousel, skating rink, theater, a lake with boating, gardens, food, walking and biking tours and all sorts of entertainment. It takes just one New York City visit to realize that it actually is the city that never sleeps — and neither should you!
Something Different
One of Manhattan’s most beloved oases, the 1.5-mile High Line beckons visitors who walk, sit and picnic 30 feet above the city with sweeping views of the skyline. It’s hard to believe what was created from a former freight line. Attractions include public art installations commissioned especially for the park, lounge chairs for sunbathing, a mini sumac forest, and gourmet cuisine and refreshments. There’s also the newly relocated and vastly expanded Whitney Museum at the southern end.

Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park in Cozumel is only a 10-minute cab ride from the downtown pier and has a wealth of attractions, not the least of which is a powdery white-sand beach with water so clear that you can see fish the moment you get in; rent snorkels to explore further. The park also has a botanical garden and archeological area, and if you’re traveling with kids, you might want to splurge on the sea lion show and dolphin presentation.
Beach Time
Every port on this itinerary serves up wonderful beaches. In Roatán, head to Tabyana Beach with its mile-long stretch of powder sand. At Playa Mia Grand Beach Park in Cozumel, there’s the familyfriendly bonus of waterslides and a “pirate ship” with water cannons.

Near the pier you’ll find bars, restaurants and shops brimming with tantalizing souvenirs. Look for locally made silver jewelry and blankets as well as Mexican vanilla extract. On the island of Cozumel, off the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, relax poolside at a beach club, head into the jungle on an ATV, or partake in extraordinary snorkeling and diving opportunities. Visit the colorful town of San Miguel, where you’ll find great shopping and warm locals. Or travel by boat to the mainland to visit the famous cliff-top Mayan ruins in Tulum. In Cozumel, you’ll find souvenir shops, clothing stores and markets that specialize in handmade gifts, especially around San Miguel's main square. Check out Mayan Cacao Company for treats made from Mexican chocolate. Roatán, the largest of the Honduras’ Bay Islands, is a beach-lover’s paradise, with white sands backed by coconut and almond treats and water teeming with marine life, making for great snorkeling and diving opportunities.

EMBARKATION CITY: SEATTLE First-time visitors to this major metropolis of the Pacific Northwest tend to ogle two amazing gifts of nature: the snowcapped Mount Rainier which, on clear days, presents a view fit for a postcard, and the mesmerizing waters of Puget Sound that impact the daily lives of visitors and residents alike. Ferries and pleasure boats come and go between the city, the Olympic Peninsula and the islands that stretch north toward Canada and Southeastern Alaska.
Through these picturesque waters, between the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascades to the east, glide the cruise ships. It’s a perfect scene for the beginning of a Norwegian Cruise Line voyage on the highly popular itineraries to Alaska. Norwegian Encore will cruise to Alaska from Seattle starting in May 2021. Most cruisers plan to spend some extra time in Seattle, on either or both ends of an Alaska trip. Water views are at every turn, from wharfs, restaurants, parks and especially the top of the Space Needle, built for the 1962 World’s Fair and extensively renovated in 2018 to even better show off the coastal panorama. Another great way to view the cityscape is to take a ferry ride, such as the 35-minute trip to Bainbridge Island from downtown. Keeping with the water excursion theme, be sure to check out the fresh-water Lake Union and the Ballard Locks, both part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Stroll through the South Lake Union Saturday Market or rent a kayak or paddleboard at Moss Bay Kayak to tour Lake Union on your own. The Ballard Locks, which allow passage of more boats than any other locks in the United States, are the connection between sea and saltwater and the protection of the fresh lake waters. Along with the fish ladder and the surrounding botanical gardens, the locks attract more than one million visitors annually. Speaking of fish, eventually every visitor to Seattle ends up at the historic Pike Place Market, where you may buy a cooked meal, a fresh fish waiting to be grilled or flowers to take with you. It’s a popular historic building, but hardly the only place in town for fish. Seafood houses abound in the city by the Sound.
