LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Allow me to welcome you to this beautiful ship, an alluring slice of paradise and to the latest issue of Style at Sea. What you’ve seen so far on board is just the beginning of what will prove to be an unforgettable vacation, and it is our goal every issue to create a magazine that enhances that journey. Style at Sea is intended to give you an all-encompassing look at the unparalleled services and amenities offered on board along with insider tips on how to get the most out of your Caribbean getaway. In this issue, we profile some local Caribbean designers (page 66) who’ll make sure your wardrobe choices are as fashionable and island-inspired as possible. We dive into the native gems that call the Caribbean home (page 46). Of course, we also highlight the best things to do on board and in the destinations that so warmly welcome us. While on board, be sure to take advantage of the complimentary consulting services provided by your onboard Princess Shopping Concierge, who will guide you through your limitless opportunities both on board and ashore. The Princess Shopping Concierge is here to help you save time and money so you can make the most of your vacation. So what will be the moments that define your experience? Swimming with stingrays? A daily sunset-and-champagne ritual? Shopping duty-free treasures? Whatever your pleasure, we wish you the journey of a lifetime.

VOYAGES: Alaska

PrincessCB19_020-21 first day at sea Folder.indd 20

11/6/19 10:16 AM

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned voyager, we promise that your first day on board will be among the most memorable. You’re finally ready to set sail on an exciting cruise vacation where you can relax on board, surrounded by refreshing ocean breezes and the anticipation of adventures to come.

HERE’S OUR GUIDE FOR WHAT TO DO ON YOUR FIRST DAY! MORNING

BOOK YOUR SPOTS. Specialty dining reservations and shore excursions fill up fast, so reserve early for the most options. Take a tour of the spa, ask about port day specials and enter the raffle to win free services!

BON VOYAGE!

SAFETY FIRST.

Your vacation has officially commenced. Your cruise card or OceanMedallion™ is activated, granting you access to your stateroom and payment options on OceanMedallion-enabled ships. You’ll also receive access to gaming, entertainment and more! This is also prime time to scope out all your soon-tobe favorite spots on board. Sign the kids up for Camp Discovery™ and locate your ideal deckchair.

Gather in your designated meeting area for the mandatory muster drill. Crew members will walk you through necessary safety information and teach you how to properly put on a life vest. These drills take place about 45 minutes before departure.

AFTERNOON

LUNCH TIME AND COCKTAIL TIME! Head to Horizon Court or World Fresh Marketplace for your first delicious meal at sea. Try a tasty crêpe or sample savory Asian-style noodles. Visit other onboard dining venues or sip on a refreshing beverage while getting into vacation mode. Master mixologist Rob Floyd has shaken up the traditional cocktail menu with ultra-fun creations. Try the raspberry liqueur-spiked Princess Punch made with Absolut Elyx vodka and ginger beer, or enjoy a hint of mint and lime in a nonalcoholic Zero Mojito.

CHECK OUT YOUR DIGS. Drop off your carry-on bags (your checked luggage will be hand-delivered later) in your stateroom. The lifejackets in your cabin are marked with a letter to indicate where your muster drill will be.

CELEBRATE AT THE SAILAWAY PARTY! After the safety drill, head to the deck to sail away in style! Say cheers to the start of your adventure with live music, cocktails, dancing and new friends at our epic Sailaway party. EVENING

SETTLE IN FOR DINNER. Whether you have reservations for dinner at one of our specialty restaurants* or enjoy the delicious offerings in one of our main dining rooms, there are options sure to satisfy everyone’s cravings. *Enjoy specialty restaurants for a nominal fee.

ENTERTAINMENT ALL NIGHT LONG! Be dazzled by Broadway-caliber entertainment and captivating magic shows. Show off your talent in the Voice of the Ocean or enjoy a blockbuster hit at Movies Under the Stars.® Go on, the night is yours! princess cruises

s exciting as it can be, for most women, packing for a cruise presents a unique challenge. On one hand, there’s no limit to the amount of bags you can bring with you. On the other, no one wants to share his or her cabin with a gargantuan suitcase! The Caribbean is intimately associated with rare gems and precious jewelry. Historically, gemstones from all over the world have been bought and sold in these islands, and that’s still true to this day. Many of the precious stones traded here come from the Caribbean itself. Some can be found in exceptional quality here; others, such as larimar, appear nowhere else in the world.

pearls Pearls play a key role in the often turbulent history of these islands. Pearls were held in esteem from the earliest times, and were the focus of the first commercial interactions between Europeans and the indigenous peoples of the region. The Caribbean has always produced exceptionally fine pearls, but perhaps the most remarkable are those found not in oysters but in the conch. The conch is a type of giant sea snail. It’s prized for its tasty flesh, and its impressive shell is used for decoration,

trade and even as a musical instrument. Only one in 10,000 conches contain a pearl, and only a few thousand conch pearls a year are produced worldwide. Of these, only 15 to 20 percent are suitable for jewelry. Unlike oyster pearls, conch pearls can’t be cultured. Conch pearls are harder than other pearls and

have a unique luster. They are exquisitely beautiful, and are found in an array of colors from white to chocolate. Perhaps the loveliest are pink conch pearls, with their warm tints of peach and rose.

blue amber Blue amber is a truly magical gem. Found only in the Dominican Republic, it derives its beauty from certain optical properties that are unique to this specific type of amber. Seen under artificial light, blue amber displays the rich tones found

in amber from other regions: honey, gold, warm brown and yellow-green. Take it out into the sunshine, however, and its true character is revealed: the surface of the stone takes on a shimmering, opalescent blue. Depending on the light and on the particular piece of amber, this can be a pale silvery tint or the rich, strong blue of a cloudless Caribbean sky. Mikimoto Flora Brooch with conch pearl center

Blue amber is only formed from the sap of a certain type of prehistoric tree (the Hymenaea protera). It’s thought that the smoke from ancient forest fires infused the resin with the substances that produce the stone’s blue fluorescence.

caymanite An unusual semi-precious stone, caymanite is less showy than other Caribbean gems, though no less lovely. Caymanite takes its name from the Cayman Islands, where the principal deposits are found; it’s rarely encountered outside of the Caribbean. Caymanite is technically a rare form of dolomite, distinguished by finely grained veins and ripples of color. Ranging from red-brown to white, caymanite’s tones are subtle and earthy rather than vivid.

Many of the opals found in Honduras are black matrix opals, where porous black basalt has been impregnated with iridescent crystals of silica. honduran black opal Unlike the more familiar American and Australian organic material, Honduran black opals are volcanic in origin. They owe their unusual appearance to the region’s dark-colored rocks, which provide a dramatic counterpoint to the opal’s play of color. Honduras produces crystal opals, including red-orange fire opals and black crystal opals. Many of the opals found here are black matrix opals, where porous black basalt has been impregnated with iridescent crystals of silica. Honduran black opals sometimes have distinct geometric patterns, like a harlequin’s costume. These are known as harlequin opals, and they are among the rarest types of opal in existence. 50

larimar Perhaps the most famous Caribbean gemstone of all is larimar. With its bewitching azure and aquamarine hues, larimar is often seen as embodying the color of the Caribbean sea and sky. Like blue amber, larimar is only found in the Dominican Republic. Although larimar was familiar to the indigenous people, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that it began to be more widely known. Its rediscovery is credited to a Peace Corps volunteer named Norman Rilling and a Dominican named Miguel Méndez. In 1974, they found some specimens while working in the southwestern province of Barahona and discovered that the source of the stones was an extinct volcano; erosion was freeing pieces of larimar from the surrounding rocks, and these were then washed down onto the beaches nearby. It was Méndez who gave the stone its evocative name. “Lari-” comes from the name of his daughter, Larissa, while “mar” is the Spanish word for the sea, reflecting the

stone’s entrancing blue-green coloration. Larimar can range in color from green; there’s also an unusual variety of the stone called red larimar, which has magenta, brown and rosy-pink shades. The color can be fairly uniform, delicately mottled and even cloudy or frosted. Fine crystals embedded in the stone reflect the light and may give it the appearance of satin. As well as handmade jewelry, larimar is sometimes sculpted into small figurines and other objets d’art by local craftspeople. n 52

Beat the clock with stylish outdoor watches.

CAIAIMAGE/SAM EDWARDS/GETTY IMAGES

A

WATCH AS A MERE TIMEPIECE has become a very quaint idea. Today, there are a mindboggling variety of watches, from jewel-encrusted fashion statements costing tens of thousands of dollars to utilitarian straps of rubber that keep track of your every step. Outdoor watches are a particularly dynamic part of the watch world — with players big and small wanting to get in the game, from traditional old-guard watch companies and new independent designers to iconic tech and fitness giants. Here in the great outdoors, the distinction between traditional sports watches and fitness trackers has blurred into an impressive hybrid. They have come out of their utilitarian corners to embrace the latest trends in technology and design, and have become timepieces on steroids for the sporty set. Think built-in GPS, smartphone notifications and sensors to record a stack of metrics, from speed and distance to heart rate, calories burned and altitude. Many outdoor watches come with heart-rate monitor straps and companion apps to generate and digest even more data while on the move, whether climbing, running, surfing or swimming. With a few taps, turns and swipes, you can crunch info from calories burned to overall fitness levels to hopefully aid your journey to a more fulfilling outdoor adventure.

Extreme Sports Watches For those so inclined to take on challenges like climbing the world’s tallest peaks or trekking through the wilderness for days on end without another soul in sight, rugged but lightweight watches with a superlong battery life are an absolutely musthave. The top options have sophisticated apps that allow you to make mini movies incorporating the route map, photos and even vital stats that sensors have collected so you can share them with your likeminded sporty pals. Serious adventurers will appreciate outdoor watches with a hybrid radio-GPS technology that sets the time anywhere on Earth. Look for watches with a built-in solar panel that recharges the battery and an LED face – indispensible if you need to navigate in the dark. To help you survive in the middle of nowhere, look for watches with a steel case and tough straps made of super-strong nylon paracord that can be yanked off, unbraided and pressed into action as a multi-purpose tool to secure gear to your backpack, fix a tent, tie a splint for a sprained ankle or catch fish. princess cruises

Diving Watches Yes, they have to be water resistant until at least 200 to 300 meters down (or to a crazy 3,000 meters, like a classic diving watch built by Breitling) and numbers and dials have to “glow” so they’re readable in all those deep dark places you’ll be exploring. Beyond that, though, today’s top diving watches offer even more. The pricey mechanical diving watches made of lightweight titanium make for a great piece to strap on while you’re heading down into the depths of the undersea world. Better still are the smartly designed models with a dome-shaped dial filled with oil to minimize reflection for maximum visibility under water for time and temperature.

Surfing Watches It might be debatable whether you actually need a watch while you’re surfing, but for those who think they do, there is a sea of models specially crafted for the sport. The best have been designed by surfing enthusiasts who know what really matters when you’re out there riding a big one: a tough steel case, durable nylon strap, and water resistance down to 100 meters (328 feet) or more. designer, a career in the fashion industry is practically a given. Cayman-based Isy Obi did, indeed, inherit her fashion design skills from her mother, and is now putting them to work on her Isy B. line of dresses and separates. “After wilting one too many times at a hot Cayman cocktail party, I saw the need for elegant dresses that remain comfortable in the heat,” she says. And so the collection was born, offering light yet luxurious day-to-night dresses that combine technology and smart design to keep you cooler in balmy temps. “My designs draw on the colors, relaxed vibe, and cosmopolitan sophistication of my Caribbean home,” Obi says. As a young naval commander, Horatio Nelson led British naval forces at Antigua’s English Harbour.

Antigua is best known for its soft beaches,

serene coves and extensive coral reefs, but it is also a crucial historical site, offering a unique perspective on colonial life in the Caribbean. The English settled on the island in 1632, and by the 1800s, Antigua was a leading producer of sugar cane and a thriving port, earning it the nickname “Gateway to the Caribbean.” 78

PLACES OF INTEREST St. John’s, the capital city, is home to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which dates back to the 17th century. It was rebuilt in 1845 after the previous two incarnations were destroyed by a series of earthquakes. Boasting intimidating white towers and a fragile stone shell, this iconic church has undergone extensive restoration. Another Antiguan gem, Nelson’s Dockyard, stands as a testament to 18th-century nautical life. The dockyard blends the old world with the new, showcasing restored colonial architecture as well as a very modern, premier

For a more historical museum experience, the Museum of Antigua & Barbuda is in the historic St. John’s Court House, which was built in 1750. The museum’s exhibits trace the story of Antigua from its geological birth to political independence. The coral reefs that once protected Antigua from foreign invaders now attract divers and snorkelers from all over the world. The protected waters of Long Bay feature many exclusive resorts for vacationers who want to swim among the island’s famous fringing reefs.

The park features Arawak petroglyphs in Fontein Cave, the remains of Dutch settlements at Masiduri, plantation houses in the Prins Valley, towering Mount Jamanota and the ruins of a gold-mining operation at Miralamar. Many visitors prefer to explore the area on horseback or on a leisurely jeep safari. In Oranjestad, the capital, Dutch colonial-style buildings house duty-free boutiques. Also in the area are a few small museums, including Museo Arubano in the restored 18th-century Fort Zoutman.

The first English ship reached Barbados in 1625, and Europeans have been fascinated with the tropical isle’s allure ever since. Over the years, many cultures have colored this easternmost Caribbean island whose warm, friendly residents are known as Bajans, but a decidedly British ambiance still makes visitors feel like royalty. Caribbean cricket, anyone?

PLACES OF INTEREST For an understanding of West Indian culture and colonial history, the capital, Bridgetown, is a good place to explore. National Heroes Square (formerly known as Trafalgar Square), which dates back to 1813, is a celebration of the island’s heroes and is home to a bronze statue of Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson. Also of note in Bridgetown are the Barbados Museum, originally a military prison, and one of the oldest Jewish synagogues in the Caribbean, dating back to the 1600s.

Barbados is also a wellspring of natural wonders. Harrison’s Cave, a breathtaking limestone cavern, will be on the top of every spelunker’s to-see list. Its many subterranean streams, springs, stalagmites and stalactites have made it one of the island’s leading tourist attractions. North of Bridgetown is the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, where you may spot green monkeys, red-footed turtles, peacocks and pelicans as you stroll along the wooded paths.

The cuisine in Barbados has a heavy focus on seafood, due to the wonderful fresh fish that can be caught just off the coast. Flying fish, the most popular option, is traditionally served with a cornmeal and okra dish called cou-cou.

The Chibcha Indians, who originally lived in the area now called Cartagena, were skilled at crafting gold, weaving textiles and making pottery.

To protect this key trading center on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Spain fortified Cartagena by surrounding it with fortress walls that are up to 20 feet thick. Today Cartagena is a draw for tourists who may enjoy joining locals in drinking rum, dancing and basking in the tropical sun. PLACES OF INTEREST When you visit Plaza de Bolívar in the Old City, you can relax under majestic trees. Facing the plaza is the Palace of the Inquisition, a museum that displays instruments of torture used during

Spain’s Inquisition. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is a complex of batteries, tunnels and hiding places that were built from stone to ensure that no enemy could survive an assault on Cartagena. The tunnels were constructed so that any sound would echo loudly enough to alert guards. Cartagena also has its fair share of luxury. Most notable is Bocagrande, several minutes from town by taxi, which boasts a beach, resort hotels, restaurants and nightclubs.

Columbus sighted the island in 1503 when he was blown off course on his way to Hispaniola. A century later, Grand Cayman and sister islands Cayman Brac and Little Cayman counted buccaneers, beachcombers and shipwrecked sailors among the first settlers of the British Crown Colony that would come to be known as the Cayman Islands.

Grand Cayman in 1957, recreational scuba has been the island’s most popular tourist activity. Stingray City is one of the most popular diving and snorkeling sites on the island. The stingrays, which may be as wide as six feet, look like stealth bombers hugging the sandy bottom. waterfalls and Grand Etang Lake, which fills the crater of one of the island’s extinct volcanoes. Hikes range from easy to rigorous and are perfect for viewing the area’s flora and fauna. Levera National Park comprises 450 acres of Grenada’s most scenic coastal area. It consists of a picturesque beach, a lagoon that is home to many bird species, and coral reefs that harbor colorful fish. Don’t miss Grenada’s most famous beach, Grand Anse. Ocho Rios means “eight rivers” in Spanish, but the name is misleading. The title was actually a corruption of the Spanish las chorreras, which means “the waterfalls.”

Outdoor lovers will also want to visit the iconic Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios, one of the most-photographed sights in Jamaica. The 600-foot-high waterfall cascades down terraced limestone beds and eventually ends in the Caribbean Sea. If you are adventurous or athletic, the river offers zip line rides and whitewater rafting and tubing, as well as a gorgeous climb to the top of the falls on a trail that zigzags around the tumbling water. The trail is open every day, and guides are available. Feel free to splash around in the waters at the base of the falls, relax in the cooler pools higher up, or simply lounge on the small beach nearby. puerto vallarta hollywood haven There are reasons why Puerto Vallarta, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, long has attracted Hollywood glitterati. It boasts manicured beaches, a stunning backdrop of the Sierra Madre Mountains and a breathtaking view of the Bay of Banderas, where giant manta rays, tropical fish, humpback whales and sea turtles frolic in the clean waters. PLACES OF INTEREST Hollywood stars made Puerto Vallarta their home-awayfrom-home in the 1960s, building their houses in Gringo Gulch. The neighborhood’s streets are so narrow that cars can’t navigate, so they’re perfect for pedestrians. Richard Burton, who starred here in John Huston’s film, The Night of the Iguana, romanced Elizabeth Taylor at Casa Kimberley, now a bed-and-breakfast inn. The film was set in Mismaloya, near Los Arcos (The Arches). About six miles south of town, Los Arcos consists of three rocky islets

that are favorites of divers and snorkelers. In downtown Puerto Vallarta, everything revolves around the seaside promenade known as the Malecón. Shops, restaurants, bars and a lively nightlife make this area a must-see. Sunday nights are the big socializing evening in town, when bands and street artists gather to entertain. Downtown Puerto Vallarta is divided in half by the Cuale River. In the middle of the river is Cuale Island, a peaceful spot with botanical gardens, shops, riverside restaurants and the Cuale Museum, which has an excellent collection of archaeological findings from the region. Another attraction on the island is John Huston Plaza, which pays tribute to the man whose movie put Puerto Vallarta on the world stage. Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer who searched for the legendary Fountain of Youth, was Puerto Rico’s first governor.

With its high-rise buildings and resorts towering over beautiful beaches, San Juan is the Miami Beach of the Caribbean. Puerto Rico’s capital is also a major regional commercial center and a history lover’s dream. Juxtaposed against this modern landscape is one of the region’s oldest and best-preserved colonial districts, rife with 16th-century cathedrals, fortresses and plazas. PLACES OF INTEREST One of the most-visited attractions of this U.S. commonwealth island is the walled city of Old San Juan, which features narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-colored colonial buildings and tree-lined plazas. Look for the bronze statue of Ponce de León and you will have found Plaza de San José, a favorite gathering place in Old San Juan.

Next to Plaza de San José is Quincentennial Square, which opened in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. The square features a 40-foot-tall sculpture by Jaime Suarez, one of Puerto Rico’s most renowned artists. For a truly stunning view of the harbor, city and mountains, venture up to Pigeon Park. From the park, you can walk up Cristo Street to San Juan Cathedral, a medieval church where the body of Ponce de León lies in a marble tomb. Nearby El Yunque rainforest, Puerto Rico’s premier natural attraction, is home to the endangered Puerto Rican parrot and the diminutive golden coqui frog, which is found only on Puerto Rico and is revered as a symbol of the island.

TASTE OF SAN JUAN A fried plantain-centered dish offered a variety of ways across the Caribbean, mofongo is perhaps done best here in Puerto Rico, where it’s mashed with seafood, meat or vegetables and is offered as a side dish or as a delicious main course alongside rice and beans.

st. kitts caribbean secret Escape the tourist crowds at the sister islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. Columbus claimed these obscure islands on his second voyage in 1493, but it seems that the masses have yet to discover them. St. Kitts, busier than its quiet sister island, offers mountain hikes, scuba diving and several forts dating from the 1600s. PLACES OF INTEREST

Basseterre, the capital and main port, is nine miles east of Brimstone Hill Fortress. Dating from 1690, this popular historic site is a complex of bastions, barracks and other structures built on the upper slopes of a steep, 800-foot hill. Closer to town, you’ll find the best swimming at Conaree Beach. For a deeper water experience, Nags Head, at the southern tip of St. Kitts, offers excellent diving amid tropical fish, eagle rays and lobsters. Visitors who really want a workout can attempt to scale Mount Liamuiga (3,792 feet), a dormant volcano better known as “Mount Misery.” On clear days in Nevis, you can see Montserrat, Redonda and even Antigua. Other activities include nature hikes, cycling, windsurfing and riding horses along Pinney’s Beach. If you prefer less-strenuous sightseeing, visit the Nevis Botanical Gardens, the Alexander Hamilton Museum (dedicated to the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States), or just snooze in a hammock at Oualie Beach.

TASTE OF ST. KITTS St. Kitts is known for hearty meat dishes like rich goat stew and roast pig.

If you didn’t know you were in the Caribbean, you might imagine you were in the middle of the South Pacific. With dramatic twin coastal peaks called the Pitons, magnificent rain forests and acres of tropical fruit trees, the 27-mile-long island of St. Lucia is a nature lover’s Bali Hai. It also boasts manmade amenities such as golf courses, tennis courts and a marina. PLACES OF INTEREST Morne Fortune, in the capital of Castries, is the historic battleground that saw the French and

English warring over St. Lucia. It’s also the site of Fort Charlotte, a fortress overlooking the city that the French began to construct in the 17th century and the British completed in 1796 after France surrendered the island. Marigot Bay, also in Castries, was an important wartime base in colonial times but is now a yacht haven. And at Derek Walcott Square — named for the native Nobel Prizewinning poet — check out the samaan tree that shades the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. It’s 400 years old.

TASTE OF ST. LUCIA St. Lucia’s official dish is a breakfast meal of green figs and salt fish. The green figs, actually green bananas, are stewed and sautéed with the fish, often served in a pie.

Archaeologists have found traces of human settlements on the island dating back to 4000 B.C.E.

St. Maarten is the Dutch side of

a 37-square-mile island that is shared with French St. Martin. Part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch St. Maarten offers visitors many activities and amenities, making it a haven for tourists in recent years. The territory combines the elegance and sophistication of Europe with the warmth and charm of the West Indies. PLACES OF INTEREST On the Dutch side, all the action is centered on Philipsburg, the capital of St. Maarten. There’s little Philipsburg doesn’t have that you’d want out of an island port: great shopping, quaint restaurants, unforgettable historic sites and more. Wathey Square is a bustle of activity with taxis, vans and peddlers at the wharf. On Front Street is the historic Pasanggrahan Hotel, which was once the Royal Guest House for Dutch royalty. The Sint Maarten Museum houses pre-Columbian relics and artifacts from Fort Amsterdam and the shipwrecked HMS Proselyte. A lot has changed here since Philipsburg first began developing in the early 1970s. Two aptly named streets run the length of town. Front Street “fronts” the water and Back Street borders the other end. In between, the city bustles with shops, many offering imported goods from the Netherlands such as cheeses, chocolates, Delftware and, yes, wooden shoes. You’ll find prices here much lower than in the United States. There are also several casinos.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM

st. thomas danish dream With its green hills and white-sand beaches, St. Thomas offers visitors a picture-postcard view as well as great shopping and world-class restaurants. Perhaps that’s why St. Thomas is one of the most popular ports in the Caribbean. Once a colony of Denmark, St. Thomas is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with St. John and St. Croix. The USVI separates the Atlantic from the Caribbean, 40 miles east of Puerto Rico and 1,100 miles southeast of Miami. This location is a prime reason that the island has developed into such a thriving port. PLACES OF INTEREST The beaches in St. Thomas are some of the best in the world because of their calm, clear waters, powdery white sand and coral reefs that can be seen by snorkelers 40 feet from the shore. All of the best beaches in St. Thomas are within a threemile radius of Charlotte Amalie. North of Charlotte Amalie is Magens Bay Beach, considered one of the top 10 beaches in the world by most travel guides. Magens Bay offers changing facilities, chairs and snorkeling equipment rentals. The beach is in a cove between two mountains and is a mile long, making it excellent for walking. Hull Bay, directly west of Magens Bay, is an excellent spot for surfing during late fall and winter. Shopping also is one of the biggest attractions in St. Thomas. Charlotte Amalie abounds with stores, many in old Danish warehouses that once held molasses, rum, lumber, ceramics and gold. The best buys on the island are in jewelry, china, electronics and linens. St. Thomas also is rich in history. The Virgin Islands Museum is in the national historic landmark building that used to be Fort Christian. It is the oldest building still in use on the island. A skyride to Paradise Point affords a bird’s-eye view of St. Thomas and Charlotte Amalie, with St. Croix in the distance. But if you prefer to see the island on foot, you can walk up the numerous hillside stairways that the Danes built. The most famous stairs are the 99 Steps, which begin on Government Hill. The view from the top of the steps will make you think you have ascended the stairway to heaven.

TASTE OF ST. THOMAS The Virgin Islands are known for their tropical drinks, both of the cocktail and health food variety. Rum is always a popular choice, but if you want something more nutritious, try banana punch or spiced seaweed milk.

CELEBRITY PROFILE

BREITLING CINEMA SQUAD (PPR/BREITLING)

THE GOLD STANDARD

For many, it starts with that million-watt smile. From there, you may envision her walking down a runway wearing a shimmering gown, standing on a golden orb overlooking a sea of dazzling lights, or glittering like the gilded bottle of J’adore perfume. Since 2004, Theron has been the face of Christian Dior’s signature fragrance with much success. Just last year, Theron also personified another iconic brand when she joined Brad Pitt, Adam Driver and Daniel Wu as part of the first Breitling Cinema Squad, a campaign put together by the Swiss luxury watchmaker that chose celebrities they felt exemplified the brand’s values of action, purpose and a pioneering spirit. A true innovator with determination, Theron absolutely embodies what Breitling was looking for. They see the glamour, sure. But with the award-winning, noble-hearted Theron, all that glitters really is gold. It’s said that charity begins at home, and for Theron, that couldn’t be closer to the truth. In 2007, she founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) with the goal of making a significant difference in the lives of young people and lessening the prevalence of AIDS in her home country. Although the actress visits her native nation of South Africa to participate first-hand in her projects, CTAOP’s reach extends throughout all of Sub-Saharan Africa. Theron and her organization partners with and helps fund other African community-based programs that already connect with young people and teach them how to keep themselves safe from HIV as well as teaching them about the importance of self worth through education and empowerment.

But Theron’s goal is to completely eradicate AIDS in South Africa, so to reach those that could not reach them, CTAOP created a mobile clinic to test and treat the epidemic. Theron was also instrumental in launching a digital magazine app called Choma in 2013 that has reached the hands of over 1 million young people. Choma helps talk to adolescents about serious subject matters in a way that they understand. This represents hundreds of thousands of HIV cases that have hopefully been prevented. Through their own initiatives as well as through the organizations they support, CTAOP has helped more than 300,000 young people. Simply put, Theron’s overall vision of connecting to young females and males, inspiring healthier life choices and contributing towards the next HIV-free generation in South Africa is attainable. And she’s not giving up. Because of her passion and her work with CTAOP, the actress was named a UN Messenger of Peace in 2008 — just one year after starting the endeavor — and even though she has made her philanthropic work a priority, her acting career has also thrived. Theron has shaped an impressive body of work that includes films such as The Italian Job, Snow White and the Huntsman and Mad Max: Fury Road along with dozens of other roles. It was her performance as Aileen Wuornos in the movie Monster that won her an Academy Award for Best Actress, a Golden Globe for Best Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. She also has several credits as a movie and television producer. But whether she is donning a stunning evening gown in an ad for Christian Dior or playing a glamorous movie role, the part that Charlize Theron wears best is that of humanitarian, visionary and absolutely a woman of action.
