MOMENTUM IS REAL Momentum is not a myth. Politicians seek it. Athletes recognize the hot hand. Businesses define it as a series of positive events. Everyone understands it as a requirement for winning and success. Momentum propels you forward and has designed a smarter way to travel. For Brightline, soon to be Virgin Trains USA, momentum is on our side and we have millions of South Floridians to thank for where we stand today and our outlook for 2020. As Virgin Trains USA, momentum comes in the form of expansion. We are planning new stations in cities seeking a care-free, car-free connection throughout South Florida. By the end of 2020 we plan to have three new stations for commuters and leisure travelers in downtown Boca Raton, Aventura and directly to PortMiami — the “Cruise Capital of the World.” These new locations will allow us to meet the demand of residents and travelers eager for a faster, safer and easier way to connect to their ultimate destination. At the same time, construction connecting Orlando and South Florida is well underway moving full speed ahead. Forward momentum is real. Enjoy the ride,

HAPPY EXPLORING! For every person who was born to this sun-kissed land of sand and surf, there is a person who came from far away, beckoned by the endless summer, inspired architecture and vibrant community. This is the secret to South Florida’s irresistibility. Mixed in with the quintessential appeal of living in a tropical paradise are the traditions, cultural nuances and personal ambitions of the expats who have been developing and reinventing South Florida since its humble beginnings. Take the story of the ambitious New York–born Henry Flagler who dotted the Florida’s eastern coast with grand hotels and landmarks, connecting them all by the very railway you’re riding on today (p. 52). Our Locals Only department explores Oakland Park’s tasty concentration of authentic taco offerings thanks to a number of Hispanic and South American–owned businesses (p. 59). Even our interview with Miami Heat new kid Tyler Herro signals exciting changes for the team and the Wisconsin-born athlete (p. 60). As the holiday season rolls around, we’ve also got you covered on the best chocolates (p. 30), cocktails (p. 32) and spa experiences (p. 34) to gift yourself and your loved ones, while curious kids will love reading about the exciting adventures that await them at a bevy of family-friendly museums. Choose to dock-shop or splurge on the watercraft of your dreams at an upcoming South Florida boat show (p. 46), or partake in some good old-fashioned holiday shopping at Bal Harbour Shops (p. 22). Whether you’re a seasoned commuter or a day-tripping novice, we encourage you to diverge from the well-traveled path of sand and surf to discover far less obvious delights. It’s a different South Florida every time you step off the train, so seize the opportunity to discover it before it undoubtedly reinvents itself once more. Happy Exploring,

GETTING HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

William P. Jordan III Editor-in-Chief bjordan@ppigroup.com

There’s nothing quite like the collective festive spirit of the holidays, but here in South Florida, we have some incredible added-bonuses that make our cheer all the more special. It starts with gorgeous weather obviously, made all the more enjoyable with each snowcapped picture our northern-exposed friends share. And then it’s the flurry of social events, starting for me with the incomparable Art Basel that consumes Miami in the greatest of ways. Art Basel is the one present that Santa continues to deliver early each December, and it sets a tone for holiday revelry and celebration that my South Florida friends and I carry with us right up until the New Year. Come December 31 at 11:59 p.m., our champagne resolutions usually consist of hope that the coming year can be just as memorable as the last. This year, I’ll be particularly thankful that this train is here, not only to expand the geographical horizons of where we can make those memories, but also provide the safest way for everyone to do it. Joyous champagne toasts don’t have to be restricted to New Year’s Eve anymore — not when premium service pulls a drink cart right up to your seat, and when a Lyft ride is at the next station waiting to help shoulder the most obvious, but most important of responsibilities. Sure, a couple champagnes here and an eggnog there may ultimately make certain memories fuzzier than even the ugliest holiday sweater, but when it’s the holidays, it’s all about being there with those you love. Cheers to those that help us get there.

HOLIDAY HUE

dinner and cocktail varieties, as well as days

out shopping and nights out dancing. There is one hue that will take you all these places: camel. That’s right, the famous neutral is now a statement color of the season. Once reserved for preppies in camelhair coats, Kanye dressing Kim in the tone head to toe has taken camel into the mainstream. Beautiful and timeless, camel is named for the desert animal it resembles, giving it an unlikely holiday connection via the three wise men. And this season it will be a wise man indeed who invests in camel pieces, which looks especially fresh with white, but pairs perfectly with a pop of vivid color with our favorites being lipstick red to a pop of hot pink. —H.H.

SPLIT PERSONALITY

The funky-chic Dalmar hotel opens alongside its sedate sister, the Element, in Fort Lauderdale. By John O’Connor While development has slowed in Downtown Miami, downtown Fort Lauderdale is on fire. A sea of

1.

cranes swing over a frenzy of activity, creating thousands of apartments and condominiums as well as a number of new hotels. Recently swinging open its doors is the one-of-a-kind Dalmar and its demure little sister, the Element. Where the Element — an extendedstay property — is crisp, buttoned-up perfection with a European style, The Dalmar is a mid-century inspired Florida showgirl. Occupying the sixth to the 26th floors of this high-rise, The Dalmar has found instantaneous acclaim by way of its guests, and has become a darling to the cocktail set, thanks to Sparrow, its rooftop bar. Both hotel concepts are the brainchild of hospitality giant, Marriott, with The Dalmar being part of its Tribute Portfolio of exceptional hotels. The Dalmar, a short stroll from the train station, overlooks a vibrant stretch of N. Federal Highway which now boasts a dozen new restaurants, big and small, like Top Hat Deli, Good Spirits and Colada Cuban Cafe. This stretch is also the gateway to Flagler Village, arguably the hottest section of the city right now and home to a burgeoning community of artists. The duo of hotels stretches upward 25 stories in one tower, its doormen welcoming you at the ground level, 28

OUR OWN BACKYARD In addition to Alma, Miami is home to a growing number of local aromatherapy and essential oils boutiques, some of which create essential oils in-house with citrus-based plants and flowers. “Florida is known for its tropical feel and citrus fruits,” Serra says. “When you’re making an oil from scratch, you need a ton of the single ingredient just to make one bottle.” NannyP Skin Treats, a Fort Lauderdalebased web store, specializes in handcrafted essential oils sprays, lip balms and muscle-cramp creams. Among the bestsellers is the energy-themed aromatherapy basket, which includes “getup-and-go” products meant to kick-start someone’s day, from a Himalayan salt shower bath scrub to antibacterial citrus oils as well as peppermint and lavender room sprays. Arlys Naturals, another online South Florida-based aromatherapy business, offers a similar line-up of products, all of which are made with 100 percent pure essential oil. WELCOME TO MIAMI Former NBA star Shane Battier needs no introduction to Miami. Rookie Tyler Herro, on the other hand, has only been in town a hot minute after the 2019 first-round pick made a huge splash (and basically every bucket) during Summer League games. Before the 2019-2020 season tipped off, Go spoke with both the Heat legend and the future face of the team to get some sage Shane advice for becoming a true Hometown Herro.

SHANE, WITH THE “OFFICE” BEING THERE AT AMERICANAIRLINES ARENA, WHAT RESTAURANT IS A GO-TO FAVORITE? SHANE: My first year, I ate at Il Gabbiano probably 15, 16 times. There’s literally nothing that’s a bad meal at Il Gabbiano. It’s fantastic, it’s consistent — it’s the perfect Miami dinner place. Miami’s changed so much, even in the 8 years I’ve lived here. Especially with the rise of Wynwood and the Design District, there’s so many options. It used to be if you wanted a night out, you headed to the Beach. And the Beach is awesome and fun and beautiful, but there are so many more options now between Coral Gables and South Miami, Downtown Miami, Brickell Village, just a lot that the city has to offer. WE’RE ALREADY LOOKING AHEAD TO ART BASEL … SHANE: I try to go over to one party a year. See what’s happening in the art world. There’s some funky stuff,

to put it lightly. There’s so much flavor from here to West Palm Beach. Honestly, you could visit a different little pocket of South Florida for weeks on end. When you live here, you appreciate the cultural diversity and all the things that South Florida has to offer. TYLER, WHERE HAVE PEOPLE BEEN RECOMMENDING YOU GO SO FAR? TYLER: I’ve been in Miami for a week, week-and-a-half … [there’s] a lot of different places that people wanted me to try. Prime 112 was good. Tried a few places on South Beach, but still wandering around trying to find my spots. Coming from Milwaukee and being in the cold my whole life, it just feels good being in the heat. SHANE: If you come to South Florida for the first time in the summer, the winter is worth the sweat of the summer. For as hot as summer may get, the winter is that spectacular — so give it time.

DO YOU HAVE AN IDEAL MIAMI OFF-DAY IN MIND? TYLER: I really don’t like going out too much. So I’ll probably just find something low-key or chill to do. SHANE: The perfect off-day for me is you wake up, you go get a cafecito. You can find a cafecito in literally any corner of Miami. Then I’d head to Wynwood and check out an art gallery. There are so many great restaurants there. And it’s fun just to drive over the Rickenbacker Causeway. Go over the bridge and look at the city and see how beautiful it is. Maybe go to South of Fifth and post up at the beach for an hour or so. Some Vitamin D. WITH YOU BOTH GROWING UP IN THE MIDWEST, ARE THERE ANY FLAVORS YOU CAN RECOMMEND TO TYLER TO REMIND HIM OF HOME? SHANE: Obviously football is huge in the Midwest. And South Florida produces some of the best football talent in the world. So it’s fun to check out the Friday Night Lights here in Miami, some of the best high school [football] in the country. It’s fun to go to University of Miami football games or Dolphins games on Sunday. If you’re missing Midwestern football, South Florida’s got you covered. TYLER: Big fan of football, for sure. I’ll definitely try to catch some games. High school games are always fun to watch, especially if they’re two good teams going at it. UDONIS HASLEM IS COMING BACK FOR A 17TH SEASON. DO YOU REMEMBER ANY MIAMI ADVICE HE BESTOWED? SHANE: UD is Mr. 305. He’s tough, he’s gritty, but he’s passionate and loves his family and that’s what Tyler will learn about Miami. Passionate place. 49

SHANE, WHEN YOU VENTURE NORTH OF MIAMI/DADE COUNTY LINE, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO? SHANE: You know, I love to take Virgin Train USA and take my family to The Breakers. One of the best resorts in the country, and there’s nothing better than just having a mimosa by the water and watch the waves crash in and get a round of golf at the course there or go play Seminole or PGA National. Jumping on the train … and then an hour and 20 minutes later we’re in West Palm with Wi-Fi, with beverage service — it was a really easy trip. My family loved it and my kids always beg me to find excuses to ride the train and go to Fort Lauderdale or West Palm.

TYLER, WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST THOUGHT UPON EXPERIENCING OUR SOUTH FLORIDA TRAFFIC? TYLER: Uh, yeah — it was a little different coming from Milwaukee and Kentucky where the traffic isn’t too bad. [Coming] to a bigger city like Miami, just going to have to plan around however long it takes to get from one spot to another. SHANE: The best piece of advice is to use Waze or Google Maps. It may take you some funky routes, but it will save you some stress in the end.

WHAT OTHER STORIES HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA LIFE? TYLER: I hear [South Florida] is fast. It can catch up to you if you let it, so obviously enjoy and have fun, but knowing the reason [I’m] here is to play basketball. SHANE, WHAT DID YOU THINK OF TYLER’S DRAFT NIGHT WARDROBE? SHANE: You know, he showed me something. You gotta have confidence. If you don’t have confidence, the league will eat you up. So Tyler showed me that he’s got confidence that he can pull off any look, and that’s going to serve him well on the basketball court. ●

If you show them you’re about community and about family, then they’ll embrace you. [UD’s] the best ambassador the city could ever, ever hope for. He actually introduced my wife to horse country. I never knew that South Florida had such a prominent horse scene, so now my wife competes in reining championships. I’d like to thank UD for introducing us to the horse country of South Florida.

FOR FANS TAKING THE BUZZER BEATER SERVICE ON GAMEDAYS, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MAXIMIZING THE EXPERIENCE AROUND THE ARENA? SHANE: If you haven’t been to Virgin MiamiCentral station, you’ll be impressed. A really fantastic food court, a beer garden now that’s open — I know you’re going to rush over to AmericanAirlines to grab your seats, but if you have time, take in all the new features of the station.

Henry Flagler was to the development of our great state,” says John Blades, former director of the Museum. These are hardly the only vestiges of Flagler’s vast legacy to be found in South Florida, though, and a visit to any one of them can conjure up something of this visionary’s scope and ambition. While the first of Flagler’s grand hotels, the Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, is still standing and is open to the touring public, it has been converted for use as a dormitory and offices for Flagler College. PALM BEACH PIONEER However, the magnificent oceanfront Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, first opened in 1896 and rebuilt twice after fires, operates as a hotel to this day, offering guests the opportunity to experience other-era grandeur in surroundings modeled after the Villa Medici in Rome. If to enter the public reading room of the New York City Public Library is to experience the essence of library, then to walk through the magnificent public rooms of the Breakers is to know the essence of grand hotel. It was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 (just about the time it received airconditioning). Along with the 538 rooms are 140 acres of grounds to be tended, requiring some 2,000 employees. “On any given day, counting staff, guests, club members, and visitors, there might be 5,000 or 6,000 people on the property,” says Paul Leone, the hotel’s CEO, “but I think you’d have a hard time finding so much as a paint 53

WHAT WOULD MR. FLAGLER THINK? Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Virgin Trains USA headquarters to talk about Henry Flagler and his railroading exploits in early Florida. I mentioned that Flagler was a “do-er,” a notoriously tightlipped sort who rarely gave away much about himself or his feelings. Towards the end of our conversation, one staffer wondered what question I might ask that tough nut if I got the chance. Easy. “Mr. Flagler, what do you think of Virgin Trains USA’s efforts to start new Florida passenger service in this day and age?” And as to how I think he would respond? I think he’d be all in. Flagler was a visionary and Florida was next began work on the Key West extension, the press dubbed it “Flagler’s Folly.” Whitehall (top), is now the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum. The Breakers (above) lobby is grand. Henry Flagler with his wife (far right) during construction of the Key West extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad.

When the final spike on the Overseas Railway was driven, it was being called “The Eighth Wonder of the World.” I think he would tell you that the spokes connecting the Tampa-Orlando-Miami

chip around here.” While today’s guests can expect to pay a bit more than the $4 per night handed over in 1896, bargain hunters may be surprised by family-oriented rates offered up during summertime. And, even enjoying a cocktail or a meal on-site will afford a sense of that ornate Flagler-era splendor. Also in Palm Beach is the aforementioned Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, or Whitehall, the meticulously restored 75room, 100,000 square-foot “marble palace” Flagler built as a wedding gift for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan of North Carolina. Whitehall was designed by the Beaux-Arts masters Carrere and Hastings, the pair who did the Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine and who would go on to design the landmark New York City Public Library. The stately home overlooking Lake Worth boasts a breathtaking marble entrance hall 110 feet wide and 40 feet deep, flanked by a double marble staircase leading to the upper floors. While estimates to recreate the structure today range as high as $500 million, it would have met the wrecking ball in the 1960s had it not been for the

Virgin Trains USA is bringing back the most magical holiday experience: The Polar Express Train Ride. The only question remaining is … well, ya comin’?

The holiday season is just around the corner, and while South Florida may not have the creeping cold and snowstorms to clue us in, we definitely have the most magical way of ringing in this precious time of year. For the second year in a row, Virgin Trains USA has taken all the wonder and wizardry of everyone’s favorite festive film, The Polar Express, and brought it to life as only an express passenger rail service could with The Polar Express Train Ride, an experience unlike any other. Kids and kids-at-heart come bundled in their coziest pajamas, though any shivers are surely from sheer excitement rather than some cold-weather reaction. Clutching their golden tickets (so as not to

lose it through a holey pocket, of course), they wait for The Conductor to make the “all aboard” call, then step into a world where music and story unfold before immediately awed eyes! Refreshment comes in the way of a delicious hot chocolate and cookie, of course, and all who ride ultimately depart with a special keepsake sleigh bell and warm holiday feelings to last the rest of the year. There’s no better way to see South Florida than on Virgin Trains USA, and there’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than on The Polar Express Train Ride. The Polar Express Train Ride runs from November 16 to December 29, 2019. For more information, visit gobrightline.com.

TACOakland Park

ANNE RIPPY/GETTY IMAGES

By Jane Bolin Tagged a city on the move, Oakland Park has long appreciated the foodie in us all. Years ago, the city anointed its downtown as a culinary arts district, and as this area develops, the rest of the city is keeping up its tradition of home-cooked, humble, hole-in-the-wall cuisine from a variety of regions. What you don’t know about Oakland Park, you can taste. The city has perhaps the best concentration of Hispanic and South American food in Broward County. A classic is El Guanaco Taqueria Y Antojitos, a Mexican and Salvadorian womanowned restaurant that serves homemade, hand-pressed tortillas with a myriad of taco fillings. From chorizo and chipotle chicken to my personal favorite, beef tongue, you simply cannot go wrong. The best part of El Guanaco is the chips that start the meal, made fresh and always accompanied by a different salsa.

On the Salvadorian side, there may not be a better pupusa presentation. Pupusa is a thick flatbread made from corn and stuffed with cheeses, meats, you name it. Served with a fermented cabbage called curtido, it is the national dish of El Salvador. El Guanaco serves a cheese and loroco (edible flower) pupusa with curtido and a warm, red chile sauce that is equal parts satisfaction and delight. Keep in mind that El Guanaco does not take reservations and has approximately 6-8 tables. You aren’t getting white tablecloth service, but you will get a slice of culture. I’ve often fantasized about seven days of tacos in Oakland Park because of the enormity of options. Some notable favorites are Tequila Sunrise, Quates Mexican Restaurant, Tatts & Tacos and Cielito Lindo, which all provide family-friendly Mexican fare. The real winner, though, is a Mexican

grocery store on Dixie Highway. Tortilleria Mexicana is the home of an affordable two-dollar taco that transports you to another time and country. The simple cilantro and onion accompaniment to the homemade tortilla is the essence of authentic. (I’ve even been told a little too authentic as friends I have brought thought this spot was too much of dive; I just can’t help but love the bustle of the store, the banter of customers and the smell of authentic chicharrones cooking.) Tortilleria Mexicana has mastered the counter service for an affordable alternative and cultural hub. If you like the sound of this, be sure to try Alegria Taco on Andrews Avenue. They tout themselves as a compact restaurant, but the joy is in the take out! Feeling adventurous and/or hungry? Try your own taco tour of Oakland Park and discover the delicious gems all around this city. ● 59

Surrounded by 64 square miles of protected, crystal-clear waters, Ocean Cay is home to eight soft white-sand beaches. FROM SOLAR TREES TO SOLAR FARMS…WE’RE GROWING SOLAR ACROSS THE SUNSHINE STATE. Florida’s largest energy company, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), is in the midst of the largest solar expansion in the history of America. BEST OF ALL WORLDS Talking Four Seasons and South Florida with Louise Sunshine, Strategic Advisor to Fort Partners. What is it about South Florida that complements Four Seasons so well? Four Seasons is known to anchor the world’s most elite destinations and is renowned for its ability to elevate a city’s existing luxury offerings to new heights. In South Florida, Four Seasons and Fort Partners were drawn to the region’s gorgeous beaches, world-class shopping and sought-after waterfront views and saw great opportunity to introduce the brand’s famed five-star service. Surfside became a world-class destination with the opening of Four Seasons Surf Club, and bringing the Four Seasons brand to Fort Lauderdale will have the same effect on this evolving city.

If a potential resident couldn’t choose between the different South Florida destinations in the Fort Partners portfolio, what would you recommend they consider? Four Seasons buyers appreciate the five-star service that comes with the Four Seasons brand. They understand the incredible value of an investment in this world-renowned name. Fort Partners’ South Florida portfolio includes Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Fort Lauderdale, Four Seasons Hotel and Residences at The Surf Club and

70

BrightlineGO103_070 Four Seasons .indd 70

Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach. They all feature exquisite design by global visionaries, signature Four Seasons service and worldclass dining options. In Fort Lauderdale, luxury buyers are attracted to the city’s deep-water channels that make it the “yachting capital of the world” — it’s the only place in the country where you can access channels that support superyachts. To complement this lifestyle, Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale is the only chance to live in a true fivestar development in the city. Similarly, The Surf Club offers residents and guests the most exceptional lifestyle experience available in Surfside. It’s home to a Thomas Keller restaurant and Italian import Le Sirenuse and has transformed the city into an iconic destination. In Palm Beach, Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach features design by the acclaimed Martin Brudnizki and is drawing international attention for its custom aquatic excursions and weekly culinary experiences.

to the Surf Club in Surfside and Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, as well as to a private island in the Bahamas, an elite connectivity available only to members of Fort Partners’ Four Seasons portfolio. Special courtesies include preference on dining and hotel stays, as well as access to private transportation options between the developments. We’ve found that our buyers are dedicated to the Four Seasons brand and this amenity is a special way to reward that loyalty by allowing them to experience our entire portfolio.

What upcoming South Florida happenings and enhancements have you most excited? Fort Lauderdale is transforming rapidly. Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale is one of several highprofile developments underway in the area, but it’s the only one offering the chance to live in a five-star development designed by world-renowned global visionaries. In addition to the introduction of Virgin Trains USA and its planned expansion, the recent expansion of Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, with the addition of new direct international flights, is helping

to bring even more people to the area and further establish its connectivity to the rest of the world. We’re also anticipating major cultural improvements to the area, including a new soccer stadium by David Beckham and the transformation of Breakers Avenue into a walkable, public art-filled destination inspired by New York City’s famed High Line. The most exciting addition will be an exceptional, brand-new marina equipped to hold the most incredible superyachts in the world. Fort Lauderdale’s new marina has been inspired by, and will rival, the best marinas around the globe. Buyers from all over the world come to Fort Lauderdale for its walkable, accessible lifestyle, and these improvements will only enhance that.

Finally, what is it about the Virgin Trains USA lifestyle that complements Four Seasons so well? Virgin Trains USA allows our Four Seasons travelers and homeowners to easily and quickly connect between Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, enabling them to experience the best of all three worlds.

What’s something at these South Florida Four Seasons that people won’t find anywhere else in the Four Seasons portfolio? Residents of Fort Partners’ three South Florida developments have access to an exclusive partnership that no other Four Seasons developments offer. Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale residents will receive special preferred access SP O NS O R E D CO NT E NT

THE ELECTRIFICATION OF TRANSPORTATION IN FLORIDA IS CREATING A BUZZ Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is making Florida a leader in the electrification of transportation. For more than a decade, FPL has been investing in clean transportation technologies. Advancements in battery technology and a heightened focus on renewable energy has increased electric vehicle (EV) ownership by 300% since 2013, making Florida the third largest EV state in the country. The increase in EV adoption has led to a greater need for the availability and accessibility of charging stations to support growing customer demand. FPL EVolution is installing more than 1,000 charging points throughout Florida for current and future EV drivers. Approximately 600 SPONSOR ED CON T E N T

BrightlineGO103_071 FPL_GO_CX2.indd 71

charging stations will be placed at more than 100 locations, including local parks, shopping malls, and along Florida’s Turnpike. Train riders also have an opportunity to plug in and energize Florida’s energy future with EV charging available at all train stations. FPL’s initiative will increase the number of charging stations by more than 50% and may help accelerate the adoption of EVs in Florida. In Palm Beach County, even school buses are going green. The City of West Palm Beach and FPL recently announced a partnership in which FPL will provide electric batteries to be used in school activity buses for the Parks and Recreation Department.

These buses would provide clean, zero-emissions transportation for the community centers at Howard and Gaines Parks. Along with providing a clean energy transportation option, the buses will also use new cutting-edge technology known as “vehicle-to-grid.” The “vehicleto-grid” technology stores electricity from the buses, which can then be pulled back into the power grid when the buses are not in use. This initiative will provide FPL with exceptional insights and could serve as a blueprint for school districts throughout the state, paving the way for more EV adoption. Learn more at FPL.com/EVs.
