Susquehanna River Archaeological Research

TUESDAY, OCT. 25, 10:30 A.M.

Keystone Room

Who lived along the Susquehanna River, and how did they use it? From the descendants of big-game hunters who crossed the Bering Land Bridge to the nomadic forest dwellers during the Archaic Period to the village forts and corn agriculture of the Susquehannock, American Indians lived in and utilized the shoreline and islands of the river for nearly 12,000 years. Displaced rapidly through disease and loss of culture, Indians vanished from the landscape during the 17th century, and were replaced by English, Swedish/Dutch and German people groups who brought their dairy and tobacco agriculture to the region. This talk will explore the culture and technology of the region’s inhabitants focusing on the changing use of the river and its resources over time. Dr. Robert Wheelersburg has degrees in archaeology from Ohio State, Cincinnati and Brown Universities and experience at Colonial Williamsburg.

Lifelong DISCOVERY FUND

Explore how the Discovery Fund can be beneficial to all! We have many clubs on campus who have speakers or presentations. Perhaps there is a presenter or speaker who charges for their program that doesn’t necessarily fit into the club’s budget. This would be a prime opportunity to contact Jen Stuckey and ask about the funding of this special presenter who would bring knowledge, an engaging topic, a new experience plus question-and-answer opportunities. It could be a program that specific clubs would like to do, and if made open to all residents, the costs associated with it would not be a concern. This is the time to look for other activities or events that fall within this realm and explore options and make some things happen.

Please don’t hesitate to call and inquire with Jen Stuckey, activities supervisor, at ext. 14509.
