Ahoj, April! Spring is finally here and here at the Resident we’re excited to welcome back the green into the greenest city in the world. Our cover this month features photographer Musa Bektaş's project Filmed in Prague. Musa highlights the countless film, tv and ad productions that have been filmed in this beautiful city over the years. He takes pictures of the screenshotted scenes in front of the buildings and landmarks they were shot at. We sat down with Glenn Spicker and Glen Emery, expat business owners who have been here since 1990-1. In the past thirty years they've been involved in an endless and impressive list

of Prague's restaurants and night-life spots, from Emery's notorious Repre Club and Thirsty Dog pub to Spicker's late-night fast food empire Burrito Loco. The two remembered how different Prague was in the 90s and how close-knit the much smaller expat community was. We also met with the masterminds behind Prague's first and only lasagna restaurant, Lasagneria. Tired with office life, Italian Fabrizia Falchi quit her office job to bring the comfort food of lasagna to Prague. The Vinohrady restaurant offers authentic lasagna with pasta made from scratch right there in the restaurant. Starting this month, each issue will have a
kids section with the best events for you and your children to enjoy all month. From Easter egg hunts and Easter lamb bakes at Creative World to interactive dance performances and watercolor workshops, April is full of lively springtime events. Our goal with the Prague Resident is to tell the stories of the people, places and events that make Prague such an amazing city to live, work and play. And we want you, our reader, to be a part of it. As we speak to you with each issue, we hope to hear from you once in a while as well. Your ideas, suggestions and inspirations are always welcome!

Glen Emery and Glenn Spicker
The Expat Pioneers
Harrowing stories of the 90's and drinks with Glen Emery & Glenn Spicker It’s not a far stretch to say expat business owners Glenn Spicker and Glen Emery have been here since the start. In fact, the two long-time friends and sometimes friendly business rivals arrived in Prague just after the Velvet Revolution and before the formation of the Czech Republic. Both in their 20’s, Spicker came from the US, and Emery from Canada (although he had lived in Slovakia as a child). In the nearly thirty years since, between them, the two have built a seemingly endless and impressive list of involvement in many of the hottest Prague night spots, essentially making them the godfathers of the expat scene. The two recall meeting in 1991, when Emery was setting up Jo’s Bar and Spicker had just arrived and decided to open his own place (which became the restaurant Red Hot and Blues). A contact at the U.S. Embassy directed Spicker to talk to “the Canadian dude opening a bar around the corner.” “I was already in Europe traveling around... living in Germany going to school. That’s when the wall came down so I had an opportunity to come
here just as a tourist,” says Spicker. “I realized there was a lot of opportunity and fell in love with Prague. And realized this is a lot more fun than Germany so, went back there and packed up.” “When I opened my first bar that was the only bar in town basically, other than the Czech pubs,” says Emery. “When I was just setting up... everyone was visiting, coming in. I had a lot of these chancellor dudes who’d come in and say ‘well hypothetically, if a guy was trying to do the same thing, what exactly would that person have to do?’ and I said ‘well, hypothetically, if it was you,’ I would tell that person to go find a f****** lawyer, talk to you later,” laughs Emery. “And then Glenn came in one day and he goes, ‘I want to open a bar I want to do this, can you help me out?’ He was the first guy sorta shooting straight, so I said come on and we became friends.” “It was a pretty small community at the time,” says Spicker. “He was the first guy who opened up something, so we were pretty early there. It was before Radost opened, before Italian guys were here opening pizza places, it was before everybody,
really.” Before the 90s expats opened bars and restaurants, there were only Czech pubs and places offering the classic Czech food of meat and potatoes, a result of the decades under the communist regime. The non-Czech places were so rare Emery and Spicker can remember their exact locations. “There were a few non-Czech places... There was the Indian restaurant on Wenceslas Square. It was a bunch of fat Czech guys making Indian food, no spices - they made good naan bread though!” laughs Emery, with Spicker agreeing that he used to go there. “There were chinese restaurants also run by Czech guys, but then there was a Vietnamese cultural center that always had food right next to Kogo. We used to go in there and get bowls of soup.” They remember how the Vietnamese population was already significant then, after Vietnamese had been invited to study or work in the country by the Czechoslovak government during the communist regime. Glen Emery models a Budweiser in the mid-90's.
“So when the wall came down they all set up shop, Chinese restaurants,” says Emery. “I used to go to this Chinese wholesaler market and there was this little old lady selling Pho out of the backseat of a Škoda, she was this really small lady with a heater right there just cooking away!” “I kept saying why don’t you open up one of these downtown cause all the foreigners everyone would go crazy for this pho ya know,” says Emery. “And then finally someone did it and then BANG it just went like overnight. And then every single Chinese restaurant turned into a Vietnamese restaurant.” “Hundreds, hundreds,” Spicker adds. The expat community was incredibly small then. Everyone knew each other, or knew someone who knew someone, and the night life was roaring with legendary places like the Bunker and Emery’s bars, Repre Club, in the basement of the Municipal House, and the Thirsty Dog pub, famously written about by Nick Cave and visited by poet Allen Ginsberg. “I would be setting Red Hot and Blues up over here in New Town doing whatever on this side of the water, walk over the bridge, go to Jo’s bar and watch these guys finish up before they opened,” says Spicker. “Once they opened I’d go over and have a beer and then I’d jog home or something stupid. I was so young I could party and then run home to Prague 6.” Spicker remembers how a friend couldn’t find him for a while and got fed up, calling the states from a payphone trying to find out where he was. The friend ended up asking another person at the 14
PRAGUE RESIDENT | April 2019
phone booth if he knew where Spicker was, and he was like “oh yah!” - The community was so small you simply had to ask a random person at the phone booth and they’d know how to find someone. On top of being a much smaller community, there were no study abroad programs or stag do parties bringing obnoxious groups of young drunk people to the city. “So back in the day, there were a lot more interesting, more intrepid travelers, more sort of crazy people,” says Emery. “The fact that there was no American Express and no banks, etc... it was still more dangerous, kinda dodgy. It was on the FBI ‘maybe you shouldn’t go’ list, ya know, all those things cause it didn’t have all the amenities. So that was a good filter for filtering out all the jocks. It was
just wild and crazy people here. Real assortment.” The people weren’t the only thing different then. “It was pre-mortgages, pre-payment programs, before GQ and Cosmopolitan and Elle came in,” says Emery. “So all these sort of societal changes hadn’t taken place yet so it was completely weird. For us to come in here, ya know. Women didn’t shave their legs or underarms, the trams smelled like low tide all the time, nobody wore deodorant… you should have seen it back in the day holy smokes it was rough as a dog’s breakfast on those trams like whooooa.” “It was definitely really raw, and things weren’t open,” says Spicker. “There were no restaurants no bars… Restaurants where all the windows were blocked, ya know, colored off, colored glass, you couldn’t see in.” “No McDonald’s, nowhere to get money, the crown was inconvertible you had to change money on the black market,” says Emery. “There were two rates for the currency, there was the bank rate and then the street rate. Couldn’t get stuff done, there were no washing machines, you had to actually get a girlfriend to get your laundry done.” Now, it’s a little different. Greasy American chains are abundant and an ATM can be found on every block. Expats don’t know every other expat in the business and you don’t have to be massively adventurous to settle in here. “There’s a lot of people we don’t know,” says Emery. “I always run into people who have been here for years and they’re doing restaurants and stuff and I’ve never heard of them or seen them before.” “Now you meet people and have no idea who they are,” says Spicker. “But that’s good too though!” The abundance of tourists Prague now attracts has made locals less welcoming than they were in the 90s. When the country first opened after the revolution, foreigners were an intriguing reprieve from the monotony of communism and brought exciting stories of the newly-reachable West. “Most Czechs hadn’t traveled and hadn’t met people, and we were exotic, so we were invited into their homes, to meet their family and told about the past,” says Spicker. “Doesn’t happen now, tourists
Emery's Jo's Bar back in the 90's.
are everywhere, they’ve traveled, they have money now, so. It’s much more like traveling in the west now, than it was back then. Like [Emery] said we weeded out a lot of people that just never would have come here back then. [Czechs] were tolerant people, they mixed well with us. They loved having us around! Not so much anymore.” Ways of running a business have also changed, especially since the police are much more diligent now compared to the years after the revolution. “The cops kinda went underground, the cops who basically supported the regime, so right after the revolution happened they went missing, they sort of disappeared for a while,” says Emery. “So it was a bit anarchic on the streets and lots of weird stuff happening. You saw [cops] around a bit but they kept a low profile. Now they’re back up to full strength. Especially at my bar, [Bukowski’s] they busted me last week. They came into my bar seven times in six days after finding out people were smoking in the back room.” “That’s true, I never thought of it like that but they were definitely keeping a low profile,” agrees Spicker. “But they were also celebrating. There was a revolution, people were having fun. They weren’t working and either didn’t take their jobs seriously or weren’t working that hard. You just didn’t have stuff like 20-year-old consultants for T-mobile. It was just more like regular businesses that were starting up, there was a lot of opportunity, just not so corporate.” Besides more aggressive regulation, running a business has gotten more challenging since there’s much more competition than there used to be. “There was this nice period there where we had the experience, we knew the ropes, and the competition wasn’t global and big money, so there were some good years - which wasn’t actually that long ago,” says Spicker. “But now, it’s definitely harder, or at least I find it that way. Even five years ago - Burrito Loco people would come from miles to go to the first Burrito Loco, now it’s like whatever, they’ve got everything everywhere, they don’t have to come to Burrito Loco. That’s just five years.” Emery agrees, but adds that it’s gotten “easier administratively” since clearer processes have been put in place and somewhat normalized. Although Prague’s popularity has exploded in the past decade, the small community feel from the early expats hasn’t faded away. Emery and Spicker often break off into tangent conversations about mutual friends, discussing where friends are living and what they’re up to, and how they randomly ran into so-and-so at this place the other night. A couple of friends - “two more insane people” coincidentally come into the restaurant and join the conversation for a while; Doug, one of the first early expats himself, and Kenny, who’s “only been here 10-12 years” - a newcomer by Spicker and Emery’s terms. They also talk about everything happening in the bar and restaurant world, from changing ownership and ending leases, to the biggest successes and failures of the last couple decades. Countless business ventures have popped up and faded away since Emery and Spicker moved
Glenn Spicker out on the town "back in the day".
here, but the two still refer to places as if they’re giving directions in a small town: “You know on the Petřín side of the hill? Just past the grow shop. There was a club there with an airplane thing…” or “I forget the name but you go in this one place and then out this other and then...” Emery and Spicker’s businesses have come and gone as well, ranging from laundromats and bars to restaurants and museums. Currently Emery owns Bukowski’s, everyone’s favorite hipster hangout for cocktails in Žižkov, Elbow Room, a more luxurious version of Bukowski’s in Letná, and Frankie’s, the only place in town that features specialty beer from northern Bavaria on tap all year. “I moved out of the center a long time ago and where I used to live, there was great little cocktail bar that I used to go to called Hapu,” says Emery. “It was on a little side street in a residential building and I realized, cause after a while you’re living in the center and I lived in the center for 20 years, and then you find the city getting tired with all the tourists and all the shit… I used to go to… Hapu bar and was like ‘oh shit, this is a perfect idea.’ And I always wanted to open a place on Bořivojova around Žižkov there cause it’s a cool neighborhood, so I finally did.
Spicker on the other hand has stuck mainly with food: Burrito Loco provides sustenance to the many, many apres-party crowd in the early morning hours, Bohemia Bagel brings the classic American food to Central Europe and the legendary U Malého Glena (literally, “At Little Glen’s”) has hosted the best local jazz musicians for the past 25 years and serves a mix of Tex-Mex and American foods. Spicker is set to open a new restaurant this month called Cali Brothers, featuring aged steak and fresh mussels. Neither thought they were moving to Prague for good. Emery even packed it up and went back to Vancouver for a few months in 2002, but the city and its never-fading charm always brings him back. They don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. “Friends complaining in their thirties, friends complaining in their forties, ‘ahhh yah i’m slowing down I can’t do it I’ll have a hangover for three days’,” laughs Spicker. “And I’m like, I’m fine!” So how have the Glen(n)s accomplished all this in the past thirty years? “I’ll give you advice,” laughs Emery. “From Bukowski - don’t try.” April 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Stumbling Stones
Subtle memorials remind us of a darker time By OLIVIA POTENZIANO
While exploring the winding streets of Old Town, you may come across a little brass plate with a name on it, standing out against the grey, brown and red same sized cobblestones that surround it. German artist and creator Gunter Demnig crafted and placed each of these brass "stumbling stones" in rememberence of victims of the Nazi regime. Since 1996, Demnig has placed over 70,000 stumbling stones (translated to Stolpersteines in German) in over 1,200 European cities, making it the largest decentralized monument in the world. There are over 300 Stolpersteines in Prague alone. Each stone is strategically placed outside the last place the victims lived voluntarily before being taken from their homes by the Nazis. The stones begin with, “Here lived…” followed by the victims name, date of birth and the fate of the victim, which range from deported to exiled, suicide and murdered. Demnig creates the stumbling stones not only for Jewish people but for anyone whose life was irreversibly changed by the Nazis, including minority groups such as Roma and Sinti, gay people and anyone labeled “asocial” by the regime. A stone can be created for a person who fled Europe and survived, or was deported but able to escape. These stones are made to create a historical monument that is unavoidably present in your everyday life. One moment you’re walking along admiring a cobblestone street in Prague and the next you’re looking down at a place where a person’s life changed. “You make a decision to visit a Holocaust memorial...it remains abstract… But not with the stumbling blocks,” Demnig said in an interview with NPR. “Suddenly they are there, right outside your front door, at your feet, in front of you.” The stones have not been met without controversy. Demnig laid some of the first stones
in Berlin illegally, and some cities have opted not to allow him to place Stolpersteine there. Munich, for example, claimed it was disrespectful to put the stones on the ground where they would be walked upon. Demnig’s creation of the stumbling stones are paid for by private funding and donations. Once the project became more well known, people from all over the continent contacted him to create a stone for a family member or loved one that was a victim to the Nazis. From the Netherlands to Italy, the requests for these stones became so high that the artists of the Stolpersteine no longer had to search for victims
to make stones for. There were so many stones to lay that Demnig quickly ran out of time to both create the stones and travel to the cities where they are laid. Sculptor Michael Friedrichs-Friedländer then joined the project, aiding Demnig by handling the creation of the stones. You can stumble across a few stones yourself just by walking around Prague, or you can join one of the many guided tours where locals will direct you to the Stolpersteine on the streets. As you follow the tour around Prague’s Josefov district, passing by Kafka’s childhood home and Jewish synagogues, you will find many of the stones scattered throughout the area, sharing the various stories of the victims who used to live there. “Everytime I give a tour I do mention the Stolpersteine and this history behind it,” says Eva Illnerová, a tour guide in Prague. “The stones are a symbolic memorial to those who have no graves anywhere else. I hope that one day it will be more common for people to pay attention to detail and notice the stones on their own.” Besides just keeping an eye out as you walk around the beautiful city center, you can also use a map to search for specific locations of the stones and where specific names are laid. Other cities, such as Berlin and Budapest, offer tours and similar websites to find the Stolpersteine. You can also find a calendar of Demnig’s Stolpersteine laying ceremonies for the rest of 2019 at stolpersteine.eu. April 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Wild Wild Life
Firearms, drugs and animals dominate this month’s round-up of offbeat Czech news, exclusively corralled for Prague Resident by PraguePig.com editor Sam Beckwith man with a shotgun opened fire from his balcony on Rostovská street, Prague 10-Vršovice, injuring three people.
Allergic to Marijuana
For obvious reasons, news items involving pigs are a PraguePig.com favorite, and TV Nova sniffed out a winner recently: a hog-themed story with a twist in the tail. On March 11, Nova’s Televizní noviny reported how a miniature pig dumped in a Pardubice waste container had only avoided death thanks to an anonymous emergency caller. “We opened it and there, wrapped in a blanket, was a little pig,” the female caller explains to the police dispatcher, in a recording of the conversation. “We have no idea what to do with it. We’re totally distraught … We were afraid that there was a baby in there.” Two days later, however, Nova revealed that the woman who phoned the police was, in fact, the pig’s owner’s sister. Having received “Peggy” as a gift, the owner put the unwanted porker in the dumpster then persuaded her sister to call the cops. The sisters could now face a fine of up to 10,000 crowns for wasting police time. Peggy, meanwhile, has a new home, with a family in Hradec Králové. Peggy wasn’t the only animal in the Czech news. On March 5, Zděchov, a village in the Zlín Region, received international media coverage when local man Michal Prášek was killed by “Fufík”, a pet lion he kept in his backyard. (PraguePig.
com was amused to see Zděchov Mayor Tomáš Kocourek—whose name translates as “Tom Little Tomcat”— quoted in stories about the incident.) And on March 9, Facebook user called Ondra Krobot shot some remarkable video of a wild bear running down a road in the Beskydy mountains, not far from Visalaje in the Moravian-Silesian Region.
Shooting in a hospital In a city where gun crime is rare, Praguers were shocked by three high-profile shooting incidents in March, two on the same night. On March 4, cops on Kamenická street, Prague 7, opened fire on a Range Rover with Ukrainian plates, disabling the vehicle after the driver tried to speed away. Novinky.cz reported that the driver, a “foreign national suspected of a violent crime,” and his female passenger were both arrested. Five days later, in a bizarre incident at Prague 10’s Královské Vinohrady teaching hospital, a 74-year-old man being treated in the hematology department shot two other patients with a gun he’d smuggled into the building. One of the victims later died as a result of the incident; the other suffered only minor injuries. Not far away, at around the same time, a drunk
Two unusual Moravian drug gangs also made the headlines. In a March 12 press release, the police’s national anti-drug headquarters (NPC) revealed how they’d broken up a ring that sold Czech-grown marijuana to more than 75 countries worldwide. The police contrasted the “non-technical” nature of the weed, which was grown outdoors at more than 11 locations in the South Moravia, Vysočina and Moravian-Silesian Regions, with the highly sophisticated way it was sold. The gang, who also sold cocaine, used at least 14 different online marketplaces to sell their goods, and received payment in a variety of cryptocurrencies. Seven people, aged between 28 and 72, were arrested as part of the operation, codenamed “Carlos”. Operation Carlos followed a raid on another ambitious Moravian grow op, this time based in Ivančice, South Moravia, which, according to Blesk. cz, was run by a man with a marijuana allergy. The month also saw a major development in a long-running tabloid saga, when a Pakistani court sentenced 22-year-old Czech national Tereza Hlůšková to eight years and eight months in prison for heroin-smuggling. The sometime model was expected to appeal the decision, which isn’t yet final.
Drive Blind Finally, a story guaranteed to give some expats sleepless nights. Nova reported on March 19 that the Czech driving schools association (Asociace autoškol) was aware of a scam that allows foreign driving-test applicants to cheat on the test‘s theory section. According to the association’s Aleš Horčička, non-Czech-speakers are being fed the correct answers to the notoriously difficult quiz by their interpreters rather than learning the Czech highway code off by heart. Rather sensibly, Horčička suggests translating the theory test into a range of foreign languages, removing the need for interpreters—a move the Transport Ministry says is too expensive. Lasagneria

PRAGUE RESIDENT | April2019
Lasagne with Love Lasagneria in Vinohrady is dishing up an Italian favorite. By Sarah Jackson Fabrizia Falchi first learned how to make lasagna when she was just nine years old, growing up in Rome. “Lasagna is not super difficult to cook,” she said. “Once you have all the parts, it’s like a puzzle: You just put everything together.” Twenty years later, Falchi whips up more than 100 lasagnas each day at her restaurant, Lasagneria, in the trendy Vinohrady neighborhood. Falchi came to Prague for study abroad in 2013 with her boyfriend, Gabriele Lanni. “We really fell in love with the city, with the way of living,” Falchi said. “Compared to Rome, to my city, it’s super calm.” When they returned to their native Italy a few months later, they found themselves longing to go back. After searching for work in Prague, they returned to the city at the end of 2014 for Falchi to work with a travel agency. Not long after she started the job, though, she hit a bump in the road. “For me a big, big problem with the office life was the routine,” Falchi said. “Doing the same thing everyday, it was really driving me crazy. I was like a zombie.” The couple came up with an idea to launch a business together just two years ago. Their golden goose, they decided, would be lasagna. “It’s something that everyone knows,” Falchi said. “It’s comfort food, it’s something that you have pleasure to eat.” They steered away from specializing in some other traditional Italian foods because, as Falchi says, “Pizzerias are everywhere, but this was missing.” But Falchi’s family and friends were skeptical of the couple’s idea at first. “It was very hard to tell my parents [and] my friends as well,” Falchi said. “They were like, ‘You’re crazy, you have a job and you leave it for nothing?’ because we had nothing at the time.” Still, Falchi and Lanni clung to their idea. Their tenacity paid off: After finding their location at Korunní 35 and holding free taste testings to fine-tune their recipes, they officially set up shop last February, and Falchi quit her office job to manage Lasagneria full-time. Opening the restaurant cleared the first hurdle, but the couple still had other growing pains to confront in the restaurant’s infancy. “It was just me and one Italian chef making everything,” Falchi said of the kitchen staff in the restaurant’s early days.
But it wasn’t long before the lasagna maven and her team found their stride (and made Falchi’s family and friends proud!). Today, they have about six mainstays on the menu, from Bolognese and Spicy to Amatriciana and Quattro Formaggio (Falchi’s favorite because she loves cheese). They even have a vegan lasagna with rice milk and olive oil instead of butter. They also offer a rotating menu of seasonal specialties that usually stay on the menu for a few months at a time. October saw the addition of a festive pumpkin lasagna, spring ushers in a juicy salmon-and-asparagus offering, and last month brought the luck of the Irish with a speciality made with green pasta, lamb ragout and thyme bechamel. Falchi and her chefs make all of their pasta from scratch. Another vital ingredient is béchamel sauce, a creamy white sauce made from milk, butter, flour and a pinch of nutmeg. And no lasagna could be complete without a ragù sauce, a rich concoction of tomatoes, olive oil, meat, onions, celery, carrots, and more that is left to simmer for three hours. After the ingredients have cooled (assembling the lasagna when the sauces are still too hot will wilt the pasta, according to Falchi), the team begins putting together the lasagna. Béchamel, pasta, ragù, repeat. The chefs put in the remaining ingredients, depending on the type of lasagna, and add a generous amount of mozzarella, baking
everything for about 40 minutes (it’s well worth the wait, trust us). While the servings are mostly individual-size, Falchi also makes large lasagnas for those who want to wow guests at a dinner party but need a little help. Guests can also order coffee and desserts in the restaurant, which screams minimalist chic. Overhead, black string tangles itself in an erratic crosshatch covering the ceiling, and low-hanging incandescent light bulbs give a cozy, intimate feel to the restaurant. Bottles of prosecco and empty two-liter tomato puree cans fill the shelves, pots of basil and rosemary run down the center of the main table and a giant red heart balloon sits in one of the windows, exemplifying the restaurant’s motto of serving up “Lasagne with Love.” In the future, the dream is to open another Lasagneria in a different country. But for now, Falchi is happy with just the one. “I’m pretty satisfied with what we achieved,” she said. “This was the biggest satisfaction, to build something and to see that it’s successful, and it’s something that you can really see it and you can touch it — and eat it.” Visit Lasagneria in Vinohrady at Korunní 35, Tuesdays-Saturdays 11AM - 2PM, 6 - 10PM and Sundays 12 - 9PM. Behind the lens of
Filmed in Prague
Prague’s still-in-tact historical beauty and low costs have long lured productions to film in Prague instead of Paris, Berlin and other European cities whose architecture was largely destroyed by the World Wars. One year ago Musa Bektaş started Filmed in Prague, an Instagram project highlighting all the movies, series and ads that have been filmed in this beautiful city. Musa takes pictures of the screenshotted scenes in front of the buildings and landmarks they were filmed at, showing the differences and similarities between how the location appeared in film vs. how it exists in modern-day reality. From Czech classics like The Good Soldier Švejk to Hollywood blockbusters such as Mission: Impossible, Musa hunts down the exact locations and angles to recreate the scenes and share a bit of informational trivia about the location. We sat down with the [add in age] photographer in-between exhibition openings in his home country of Turkey. How did you become interested in photography? I was always interested in photography. During my childhood, I had so many chances to observe nature and wanted to capture some special moments. I didn’t take any photography classes, I learned everything myself. And photography is my biggest passion, I never get bored while shooting .
Do you do other types of photography as well?
recognize exactly where the shots were taken?
Considering that my camera is always with me, - it’s like part of my body - I try to capture interesting moments and noteworthy moments. Besides that, I do travel and event photography. But I like to work based on the project, like what I’m doing now.
The Internet is like an ocean to find something, there is always the possibility to get lost. I mostly find movies through search and database of IMDB. Old and original cities have special signs to recognise. Skyscrapers at Manhattan, Eiffel Tower in Paris and much more samples. For me to recognise the scenes if they shot in Prague is street lamps :) Plus, I walk a lot and observe, finding unique signs about the places. I have a photographic memory, so places are a bit easier for me to remember.
You launched FiP a year ago, what was the inspiration behind the project? “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with” - This is one of my favourite quotes, because mostly I do experimental photography and some of my friends give me ideas or support me to continue with it. When I was living in Istanbul, I shot photos of historic places during day and again at night and then I combined them in one with photoshop, so you can see the same place during the day and at night. I always was thinking to do something like that for Prague. I already came across so many movie sets but the movie Edmond and my dear friend Özgür Karataş, who also supported my Day&Night project, inspired and supported me to start the Filmed in Prague project. I like to have such people around me to develop something and create synergy. :) What’s your method for finding the films that have Prague places in them, and how do you
What’s your process for taking the pictures, and how difficult is it to line all these shots up perfectly with the places they were taken, recreating the scene? I use a Canon 650D for shooting. Firstly, I search for movies shot in Prague. While watching the movie I find the scenes shot in Prague and then taking the screenshot of that specific scene and print them out. One of the most important things is light. It’s also taking time to find the right angle, sometimes I need to wait for people and vehicles. If I’m lucky enough it’s like 5 mins, on the other hand sometimes it takes up to 2-3 hours to shoot one photo. Why do you think so many movies filmed scenes in Prague? First of all the budget. Prague is a quite cheap April 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

place to shoot any kind of movie compared to the western cities like London, Paris, Berlin, etc. Especially movies about old times and sciencefiction. Prague is the one of the only cities well protected, that’s why the old part of the city is very wide. Thanks to Barrandov Studios filmmakers were able to shoot, and Czech sound engineers are also talented. Are there specific areas in Prague where most of the filming takes place? After all my shooting I can say that Charles Bridge, Hradčanské náměstí, Prague Castle and Rudolfinum are pretty famous places for shooting. These places offer a nice background which you can use for almost anything. For example, I’ve seen Rudolfinum as a hotel, metro station, university, and temple. How many shots do you think you’ve taken since you started FiP? I’ve shot around 110 photos for this project and published 102 of them on Instagram. From the published photos, 80 are depicting movie scenes, 20 of them are different series (among others Genius: Einstein, Outlander, Burning Bushes, and Istanbullu Gelin) and 2 are taken from Ads. What is your goal with FiP, what do you hope to accomplish? I started this project as a hobby and didn’t really expect this much interest. I would like to continue the same project as a video format, still thinking about it. I don’t have a specific goal, just using this project to keep alive my love for Prague. Are you a lover of film yourself, or just mainly photography? Yes, I love all kind of art. But cinema is special. You can combine all the art in cinema, that’s why it’s 7th art for me :) I like independent movies and I don’t like to categorise any kind of art, so I have favourite directors. I watched very few movies shot in Prague, to find the scenes I’m skipping every 3 seconds.
What’s your favourite shot you’ve ever taken? Hmmm, that’s a tough question. But, I think I know which one is my favourite. This one. Here my favourite author Sunay Akın is telling a story about love and singer İlhan Şeşen is waiting for his turn to sing. Sunay Akın is an amazing storyteller for me and he has stories all around the world about everything. That was a very special shoot for me. The best shoot for FiP is Kolya (on the iron bridge) and Burning Bush (in the cemetery) photos. Because I had to spend extra effort and had to break the law. You grew up in Turkey, how did you end up in Prague? Yes, and I grew up in the countryside. So, I was more involved with nature and challenges. My first overseas experience was in Poland thanks to the Erasmus exchange programme. I had 3 trips to Prague and simply loved the city. After graduation, I had a chance to do an internship in Prague for 6
months. At one activity I met my current boss, Yalın Yüregil who’s also coming from Adana. When I got another chance to do an internship I contacted him and he accepted me for his company Yeye Agency and I’ve been working there since June 2017. You just finished one exhibition and are about to attend another in Turkey? These exhibitions are organized by the support of the Czech Republic Embassy in Ankara and Turkish Education Association (TED) which I am a scholar of. I’m really excited about the exhibition which will be held in my hometown, Adana. My city is organizing the biggest open-air/street carnival in Turkey, called Orange Blossom Carnival, from April 5-9. I’m so happy to see and host all my family, friends and people at my exhibition. This is such a honour I can’t express right now. Another exhibition will be in Ankara from April 15-19 in Ankara at TED University. What other hobbies do you have besides FiP? Besides photography, I join the Regular Sunday Language Exchange meeting to get to know more people. Aldo hiking trips to discover the Czech countryside and I’m involved in cooking events to learn world cuisine. I’m learning Czech, and Prague is such an amazing place to do a lot of things. What projects are in your and FiP’s future? I’m working on some video projects about Prague. One of them is about street musicians and another one is more showing the city through drone with a local eye and unpopular places in Prague. I want to get the reaction “OMG, is this place in Prague?” from people who’ll watch :) I’ll continue Filmed in Prague with shooting and most probably It will be evolved to the videography. Let’s see! K THE TWO BROTHERS I N D I A N R E S TA U R A N T “Great find from all the tourist chaos ” - Tripadvisor Review
“Our restaurant descends from an era when celebration of life, culture, luxury, open mindedness, hospitality and happiness all put together were a must. We the two brothers at K have designed the décor of the restaurant in the spirit of what Kapurthala , a European holiday retreat could have looked like. K’s modernity is expressed through its ambience, music and fashionable spirit.”

FILMED in prague Prague through the lens of directors who have shot here. For more, follow filmedinprague on Instagram.
BY Bektash Musa Kolja (1996) "Kolja (1996) is a Czech movie that won an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as multiple Czech Lions (the Czech equivalent of an Oscar). Directed by Jan Svěrák, the film stars his father, Zdeněk Svěrák, who also wrote the script based off a story by Pavel Taussig. The film follows the story of a middle-aged Czech cellist, Louka, struggling to make ends meet during the Soviet communist regime in Czechoslovakia after accidentally being 42
PRAGUE RESIDENT | April 2019
black-listed by the regime. Through a series of events, Louka ends up taking care of a young boy and finding himself in the process. Zdeněk Svěrák is a beloved Czech actor, humorist and scriptwriter and one of the most well-known Czech personalities of the past century. His films The Elementary School and My Sweet Little Village were also Academy Awardnominated. In the Czech Republic, however, he is perhaps most known for his creation of Jára Cimrman with friend Ladislav Smoljak. Jára Cimrman is known as the greatest Czech who never lived. He is portrayed as a
universal genius, one of the greatest Czech playwrights,
poets,
composers,
teachers,
travellers, philosophers, inventors, detectives, mathematicians, and sportsmen that ever lived. Svěrák and Smoljak created the character as a joke in 1966 and went on to establish the Jára Cimrman theatre where the many plays they wrote about the character have been performed for decades (and are still almost always sold out). This was one of my best and most enjoyable shots ever. I had to wait a long time for the train to pass by to get the perfect shot.
