why his film has sparked controversy and how his career, which began under the propaganda arm of the government, has changed.
This November is a particularly special one, as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution when students, actors and artists took to the streets and demanded change. We start off with a blast from the past - a look at the Plastic People of the Universe. Formed after the Prague Spring, this psychedelic rock back had to go underground when the Communist regime declared war on their free-thinking music and style. While the band wouldn’t call themselves revolutionaries, some of their fans might disagree.
From there we go under the red tent of Wonderful Circus, a production from Laterna magika that has preserved its authenticity for more than 40 years.
We also had the chance to chat with Vaclav Marhoul, the director of the controversial new film The Painted Bird, as he was on the road to film festival after film festival. His new movie was just selected by the Czech Republic as its nomination for best international feature film for the Academy Awards. Marhoul spent some time reflecting on

PPU are undeniably the godfathers of underground music in Prague since they first started making waves in the late 1960s. Although not political, the bands non-conformity (often which resulted in their arrests during communism) put them at the center of attention, and it was partly in protest of these arrests and prosecution that playwright Václav Havel and others wrote the Charter 77

ARTS & CULTURE
Plastic People of the Universe Thirty years later, Prague's favorite underground band remains outspoken By Nicole Ely It’s Friday night and approximately 150 people gather at Kulturní dům Bílá Hora awaiting a rock band that has become a national symbol for artistic freedom. The crowd is made up of punk teens, aging rockers and parents who look grateful to have a babysitter for the evening. The lights dim, and five men walk on stage. The Plastic People of the Universe have earned a spot in Czech history thanks to their resistance to the Communist regime before 1989. Their anticonformist attitude resulted in multiple arrests, the forced deportation of some of their members, police retaliation against their fans and the signing of an informal political initiative that criticized the government for human rights abuses. Their story united intellectuals and artists alike and was often evoked in the time leading up to the Velvet Revolution. Despite this legacy, the band members would never refer to themselves as activists. “We are not revolutionaries,” says Vratislav Brabenec, who has been a member of the Plastic People since the 1970s. “We are doing the same thing we were doing before the Velvet Revolution.” Their fans, however, might disagree. “They represent liberty,” says Eva, an attractive blonde woman who has been a fan since her childhood. “You don’t know what it was like before 1989.” “They were Prague’s underground culture before the revolution,” says another audience member. “They’re one of my favorite bands.” The group’s birth can be traced back to the 1968 Prague Spring, led by reformist Alexander Dubček. Then 17-year-old bassist Milan Hlavsa formed the band less than a month after Soviet troops invaded Czechoslovakia and ousted Dubček during the normalization process. Taking their name from a Frank Zappa song, the Plastic People drew inspiration from many Western rock bands of their time, including Zappa, the Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart. Less than two years after Plastic People’s formation, the Communist government quickly revoked the band’s license to perform. This didn’t stop the music, just moved it to underground and private events. Even during this time, the musicians didn’t consider themselves political. “We insisted on playing a certain kind of music, dressing and performing in a certain way,” keyboardist and guitarist Josef Janíček told The Guardian in a 2009 interview. Nonetheless, this still landed them in trouble
many times. “It wasn’t complicated for us. It was complicated for [the government],” Brabenec says. “It was their problem. We didn’t have a problem.” Secret police had beaten and arrested fans attending their shows, but the Plastic People’s notoriety at home and abroad crescendoed in 1976. Within a month of the Second Festival of Second Culture in Bojanovice, all the band members as well as more than 15 other musicians were arrested for disturbing the peace, prompting the beginning of what dissident playwright and activist Vaclav Havel called “the trial of the Czech underground.” This period was known for constant interrogations and arrests by the police, prompting Havel and others to draft Charter 77, a harsh criticism of the regime’s abuse of human rights. While it garnered 242 signatures, distributing the text was considered a political crime. Pressure continued to rise. Band manager Ivan Jirous was imprisoned for the fourth time in 1981 and the secret police even set fire to one of the Plastic People’s concert venues. The government revoked band member Paul Wilson’s residence permit in 1977 and forced Brabenec to emigrate in 1982. Amid the tension the band split in 1988, but the discontent was already spreading throughout the country. ______ At Kulturní dům Bílá Hora, the audience bobs their heads to the beat as Janíček is perched in front of his keyboard. Brabenec’s raspy roar and
saxophone lends accompaniment. After two acts and an encore, the concert goers hang around the community center to get autographs. Eva is among them, howling in excitement when she gets her CD signed. It’s been 22 years since their reunion after the revolution, but the Plastic People still play gigs regularly. The band has gone through several iterations. Founder Hlavsa passed away in 2001 due to cancer, and original members Michal Jernek, Jiří Števich and Josef Brabec have long since left. Janíček and Brabenec are now joined by younger musicians Jaroslav Kvasnička on percussion, Johnny Judl Jr. on bass and vocals and David Babka on guitar. The new additions help keep the band’s sound fresh, according to Brabenec. Although they’re busy, they’re still working on new projects and songs. Now 76-years-old, Brabenec still has a psychedelic rock edge about him, with snowy long hair and a beard. While his memories of his exile in Canada are fading, his fingers still flutter over the keys of his clarinet and saxophone with expert-like precision. He enjoys the energy of performances, preferring to have live jam sessions rather than sticking to the old material because, as he says, he doesn’t want to be “a slave to some fucking tradition.” When looking at the lasting popularity of the Plastic People of the Universe, Brabenec is happy that people still consider them relevant. “It’s very nice the reaction of the people,” he says, “and to know that we’re not just figurines in a museum.” November 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

PROFILE
Václav Marhoul
The Painted Bird director on being a filmmaker under Communism, campaigning for an Oscar and why his latest film sparked so much controversy By Nicole Ely At the time of this interview, Václav Marhoul was on his way to the Warsaw Film Festival to introduce his controversial movie The Painted Bird. After Warsaw, it’s on to Los Angeles, then Chicago. “Every night I am sleeping in a different hotel, but I’m not complaining,” he says. The Painted Bird, which was sold to the United States’ IFC Films in late September, has been selected by the Czech Republic as its submission to the 92nd Academy Awards in the best international feature film category. Until it is officially nominated by the Academy, Marhoul will be busy campaigning for it at several international film festivals throughout the globe. “It’s a privilege because you’re not just representing your film, you’re representing the Czech Republic,” he says. For many, the country’s selection doesn’t come as a surprise. “This film is so different,” Marhoul says. “This kind of movie hasn’t been made in the Czech Republic for maybe 30 or 40 years.” The Painted Bird depicts a savage and brutal landscape during WWII as a young Jewish boy seeks safe haven somewhere in Eastern Europe after his guardian unexpectedly dies. Shot in stunning black and white and starring Stellan Skarsgård, Harvey Keitel and Petr Kotlár as the boy Joska, the film was adapted from Polish writer Jerzy Kosiński's novel of the same name. While it would be easy to categorize The Painted Bird as another war or Holocaust movie, the filmmakers and actors caution against this. In an interview with Haaretz, Skarsgård described it as more of an existential movie about Europe during a very dark time. Marhoul himself says it’s about humanity and the importance of certain principles best illustrated when those principles are absent. “[When reading the book] many questions come to you but no answers,” Marhoul says. “You have to find out the answers by yourself.” The film’s universal nature is also illustrated by its use of language. Although not heavy in dialogue, when the movie’s characters do speak they use the fictitious interslavic, a first in film history. Marhoul did this so as not to associate any one Eastern European country with the violence depicted in the film. The Painted Bird is not the first time Marhoul looked to literature for cinematic inspiration. His 2003 film Mazaný Filip was based on a Raymond
Chandler book and 2008’s Tobruk about Czech soldiers in North Africa was inspired by Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage. Although Marhoul has had an extensive career in film, these three movies are the only ones he’s directed. The 59-year-old director’s love of cinema can be traced back to age 14, when he first knew he wanted to become a filmmaker. “I loved all movies,” he says. “I loved Westerns. I loved dramas. I loved psychological movies. I loved thrillers. It doesn’t matter. There’s just one condition, it must be really good.” After secondary school, he attended the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) and from there worked as a production manager at various studios, including Czechoslovak Television and Barrandov Studios. Before 1989 when the state acted as the main producer of cinema, Marhoul found it difficult to work on films that adhered to the Communist ideology. During this time, cinema was often used as a propaganda tool by the government. Instead, he preferred to work as a freelancer on independent films. That changed after the Velvet Revolution–a movement Marhoul, as a close friend of Vaclav Havel, was deeply involved in. In 1990, he took the reigns of Barrandov Studios and continued
as its head until 1997 when he founded his own production company called Silver Screen. “I directed my first movie at age 43,” he says. “Never did I have the ambition to be a director or a screenwriter. It’s a step on the stairs of my life that I’ve just recently stepped on.” Although new to directing, Marhoul’s choices in The Painted Bird have achieved him international praise. If the film is accepted by the Academy, it will be the first Czech film to be nominated since Želary in 2003. The film has also sparked some controversy. It debuted at the Venice Film Festival, where more than 1000 people attended each screening. While most of the audience members stayed and gave the film a nearly 10-minute standing ovation, the violence caused a few to walkout before the end, which became the main media headline. “I absolutely did not understand what happened in Venice,” Marhoul says, especially when looking at other festival favorites like Joker, which is known for its violence. “In my opinion, there is a deal between audience and filmmakers,” he says. “You [the filmmaker] can do whatever you want but it mustn’t be true. The Painted Bird is a truthful film. Not a fairy tale. In this way, I broke the deal between the audience and the filmmakers. And the truth is always painful.” November 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

The Mysteries of Life
Mourning Karel Gott fans and boozy English football supporters invade Prague, but it’s just another day at the office for the Czech Republic’s adaptable cops By Samuel Beckwith, PraguePig.com The death of Karel Gott, late on October 1, dominated the headlines in virtually all Czech news media for several days. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš provided the first fresh angle, announcing shortly after the story broke that he’d like to give the iconic singer a full state funeral. When it was pointed out—by former Prague Castle protocol chief Jindřich Forejt, among others—that only two former presidents had received that honor, Babiš performed an awkward U-turn, downgrading Gott’s send-off to a “funeral with state honors”. The timing of the funeral also proved tricky. The two-day affair began with a public event at Palác Žofín, which was expected to attract 300,000 mourners to Prague. Friday’s farewell coincided not only with the popular Signal Festival but also with the high-risk Czech Republic-England football qualifier at Slavia’s stadium in Prague 10-Vršovice. The English football association, the British media and the British police had questioned the wisdom of inviting 6,000 rowdy English football fans to Prague on a Friday night but UEFA, European football’s governing body, refused to reschedule. Dire predictions of havoc filled the Czech tabloids, including this breathless warning from the Babiš-owned news site Expres.cz: “Forget fairy tales about a peaceful England where football violence has no place. The hooligans travelling around the world are different. After all, it was they who, at the last Euro in France, turned Marseilles into a war zone with their conflicts with Russian opponents.” In the end, of course, nothing much happened. Fewer mourners than expected ventured into the city, and, besides a couple of clashes, the football passed off without incident. Quiet enough, in fact, for Czech police president Jan Švejdar to write on Twitter that the funeral, the football and the festival had gone off “without the slightest problem.”
The Mustang and the spy Prior to Gott’s death, the big tabloid story was the September 22 car crash that claimed the life of Milan Jakubů, a brigadier general in the military intelligence service Vojenské zpravodajství. Jakubů’s Škoda Rapid collided head-on with a rented Ford Mustang, driven by 30-year-old Vojtěch Chaura. Jakubů’s wife was seriously injured in the incident, which took place not far from Špindlerův Mlýn, a ski resort/party town in the Krkonoše mountains. Chaura and his 12-year-old passenger
reportedly suffered only minor injuries. According to a witness quoted by TV Nova, the Mustang was on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash and was racing another car—allegations that Chaura denies. At the time of writing, police had yet to press any charges in relation to the case.
The thin blue line Before I began PraguePig.com, my opinion of the Czech police wasn’t particularly high. Now that I’m regularly reminded how depressing, unpleasant and just plain crazy much of their work must be, however, I’ve developed a newfound respect. Here, as evidence, are a few recent entries from the PraguePig.com police blotter: n A 46-year-old man called the police after a fight broke out on a Brno bus when a woman opened a window to get some fresh air. The man, who insisted that cops address him by his academic title, said he was suffering head, neck and spine pain, and had sustained a “small wound on the nose” after being ejected from the bus by the driver. n Police appealed to the public for help tracking down one of the suspects after unconnected thieves shoplifted from the same shop at the same time. One man stole butter from the Penny supermarket on Havířovská street, Prague 9-Letňany, while two others stole condoms. n The landlady of a pub near Cheb, in the Karlovy Vary Region, was arrested after shooting two guests who refused to leave the premises with
an air pistol; the 44-year-old woman faced up to two years in prison. n A patrol cop found a 42-year-old man trapped in a bus in a depot in Zlín. The man, who had fallen asleep on his way to the city from nearby Vizovice and woken up locked in the vehicle, was preparing to spend the night there because, he said, he didn’t know who to call for help. n A dispute over a parking place on Blanická street, Prague 2-Vinohrady, ended with one driver clinging to the hood of the second driver’s moving car, in an attempt to stop him leaving the scene. The first driver was attempting to draw the police’s attention to the fact that the second had driven the wrong way down a one-way street to take his spot. n Cops in Prague 1-Malá Strana tackled and disarmed a 22-year-old foreign national who had been running down Újezd street, threatening passers-by with a sword. The 1.5-meter-long medieval sword had been stolen from a suit of armor on display in a nearby hotel. n Cops successfully appealed for help tracking down a “pistachio phantom” who’d stolen 30 kilos of the nuts, with a value of 12,000 crowns, from two Prague 3 supermarkets. Within 24 hours, the suspect had been identified and arrested. n Twenty tons of potatoes, with an estimated value of 250,000 crowns, were stolen from the storehouse of an agricultural co-operative near Hranice, in the Olomouc Region. Let’s be careful out there.

Date Night
Making your romance sizzle with these cooking classes By Nicole Ely Prague is a city for lovers, whether you’re wandering its narrow alleys in Old Town, sipping some Merlot in a wine bar or enjoying an intimate stroll in one of its many parks. While there are a plethora of options when it comes to a romantic night out, sometimes your relationship needs something a little more original than a reservation for a candle lit dinner. So ditch dining out and learn how to create the same ambiance in your own kitchen.
LEARN MIXOLOGY AT PARLOUR
Wine might be good to set a romantic mood, but you can step it up a notch by learning how to make craft cocktails like any swanky bartender in the city center. Parlour is now hosting cocktail making classes for those who like to imbibe harder spirits than a glass of Pinot. Nestled in a cosy corner just off Václavské náměstí, this cocktail lounge is known as one of the city’s best hidden gems when it comes to adult beverages, and now you can learn from the masters. In this course you’ll learn to stir up three different cocktails. The lesson focuses on classic cocktails, such as sours, martinis, fashions and fizzes. The bartenders at Parlour follow the Japanese’s philosophy of mixology, meaning no egg whites, no cherries, no lemons, no syrups and no juices. By the end you’ll know how to properly cut and prepare ice blocks as well as the difference between a jigger, a muddler and a strainer. Lessons are offered in English, Czech and German. They cost a little more than 2000Kč per person and last three hours, ending at 17:30 just in time for the bar to open. The instructors provide all the equipment and a light snack so you won’t get too sloshed during your alcoholic education. So grab that cocktail shaker and get ready to impress your date and your friends. Book online at www.airbnb.cz/experiences Krakovská 15, Praha 1
COCINA RIVERO TEACHES YOU TO COOK UP EXOTIC DISHES
Instead of spending date night at a restaurant, why not learn some culinary skills that will impress your lover for years to come? Opened in 2011, Cocina Rivero is a cooking school where couples can work together to create delicious meals from all over the world. Spice up your relationship by learning how to make sopa Azteca, a fiery tomato broth from Mexico. Go on a tour of Thailand with your taste buds by stir frying some pad krapow, a chicken dish with basil and chillies. Split a mousse au chocolate with fresh raspberries with your partner in the French course. Learn how to prepare chestnut with fried butter croutons goulash, the perfect meal to snuggle up with in front of a romantic fire as the season starts to get chilly. Courses cost 1990Kč, are available in English and Czech and typically last three hours. All the ingredients and equipment are provided. Courses accommodate up to 12 people and you can make reservations on their website. Each lesson comes with a glass of wine, because, as chef Miro Mišutka says, “cooking is best enjoyed with a little alcohol.” Book online at www.cocinarivero.cz Soukenická 23, Praha 1
THE CHOCOLATE WORKSHOP AT CHOCOTOPIA
Cooking a delicious meal and mixing a cocktail is great, but what about dessert? Luckily Chocotopia has you covered with their workshops where you can learn to whip up something for those with a sweet tooth. For more than 10 years, this chocolate shop has been showing tourists and locals alike that there’s so much more than milk chocolate. In addition to the delectable treats they offer in their shop–owners Henk Mestdagh and Simona Mestdag only work with quality Belgian chocolate– Chocotopia is also home to a chocolate museum. You can become the chocolatier with a choice of different workshops. Learn to tame untempered chocolate and make fancy figurines just like the pros. In their praline course, you can cook up amazing truffles and ganages without a bubble or blemish. Other courses will teach you about the history of chocolate as well as how to decorate cakes, fruit cups and other luxury sweets. Courses run between two and three and a half hours, depending on your selection. Prices range from 1499Kč to 2499Kč and include 15 percent off in their shop. Reservations can be made online. Poke is a traditional Native Hawaiian dish.... usually diced raw fish or other meats with fresh vegetables. From the moment the first location opened up, it's been extremely popular especially among the more health conscience. With spots in Myslíkova and at both Manifesto Markets, the Letna location is the largest location yet when it comes to in-restaurant seating, which makes it a
One of the years most anticipated openings, Červený Jelen is definitely not short on space. Occupying three floors of Palác Špork that were previously a bank, patrons can dine on the Bank floor, The Treasury floor (which consists of a the safe) or the Clubroom - which is openair, and which Červený Jelen claims houses the world's tallest beer tower. But it's not just about the architecture and beer. Červený Jelen is also pretty serious about their food. The menu is compiled by Czech Chef Marek Fichtner and German Chef Patrik Jaroš. And while the menu is Czech, the pair have brought it a wider scope of world influence. The grill, in fact, was sourced from the USA.

Dance through the generations
Laterna Magika's Wonderful Circus is Czech dance in a time capsule
Two clowns bumble onto the New Stage of the National Theatre. Suddenly, a magician appears and summons a vision of Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, enticing the innocent clowns with her beauty. What follows is a journey through forests, circus tents and across oceans. The production is Wonderful Circus, produced by the historic Laterna magika. The contemporary dance show has the record for the theatre’s longest running title with 6,300 performances. First premiering in 1977, Wonderful Circus is a multimedia tale of people’s futile quest for the unachievable and has weathered the times, staying true to its original production. “It’s like going to a museum,” says Alexandr Sadirov, who plays the magician/seducer in the story. “You still have a chance to see the same performance from 40 years ago.” Like all of Laterna magika’s productions, Wonderful Circus incorporates multimedia film projections as its backdrop and scenery, wanting to blur the lines between reality and illusion. These elements are used in a way that enhances and drives the story. “The projection is really your dance partner,” Sadirov says. The projections used in Wonderful Circus are the originals from the 1977 show, adding that much more of a vintage touch. It tells the story of two clowns, stand-ins for the audience, who pursue the Venus, a metaphor for an unattainable ideal. While the clowns are able to periodically possess the Venus, she is forever elusive to them.
The production blends a variety of genres, from vaudeville to ballet to modern dance. With several generations of performances, the show has featured more than 100 dancers. Sadirov is the 25th to play the role of the seducer. Luckily, he got lots of guidance from the previous generations of dancers, many of whom are still involved with Laterna magika. Some of them are in their 70s and 80s, but they still love to collaborate with the younger cast in order to stay true to the original vision of Josef Svoboda, the show’s creator and cofounder of Laterna magika. “I really appreciate that I got to meet Pavel Veselý [the original seducer] before his death,” Sadirov says. Compared to his prior work in Bohemia Balet, Sadirov says that the friendship between the generations of dancers is what makes this dance company so special to him. As the youngest performer in the role, Sadirov focused on trying to channel a more mature energy while still leaving room for his own interpretation. Veselý and Josef Kotěšovský, who originated the role of the happy clown, both gave Sadirov good feedback. The night of his first performance, he remembers being nervous since many of the original dancers were in the audience. “It was a very intense, exciting and pleasurable feeling,” he says. Wonderful Circus is not the only historic aspect of Laterna magika. The company’s signature style made its first appearance in 1958 at the World Fair in Brussels. Thanks to funding by the Czech Ministry of Culture, stage director Alfréd Radok
and set designer Svoboda were able to afford the impressive film projections that have become a signature of Czech theatre ever since. Its debut was so popular, Radok and Svoboda developed Laterna magika within a year. Their unique mixture of Western and Eastern dance schools earned them a unique spot in the performance community. They even had two dance companies tour abroad, something usually restricted under the Communist regime. When Radok eventually emigrated, Svoboda took over the company. When the Velvet Revolution began to gain traction, Laterna magika served as a logistical center and headquarters for Civic Forum, the opposition group led by dissident playwright and activist Vaclav Havel. While the current production team and dancers strive to keep Radok and Svoboda’s artistic vision alive, the lasting legacy of Wonderful Circus is somewhat of a surprise. When it first premiered, many believed it wouldn’t last more than two years. Over time, though the show proved easy to renew. For Sadirov, he enjoys the reactions from the audience, many of whom are international and children. The New Stage provides an intimate setting, placing the theatregoers in close proximity to the performers, allowing them to immerse themselves. “That is the point. The reality and the illusion is forgotten and you can’t remember if it’s real or your imagination,” Sadirov says. “That’s what’s so special about Laterna magika.” November 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Newest translation from Cimrman English Theatre is none other than the first play in the Cimrman canon. The seminar is pokes irreverent fun at the Czech theatrical traditions and the play within a play, The Act, is a farcical take on traditional family dramas between a painter, his muse and their three adult children (a teacher, a travelling salesman and a sexologist). It’s a messy, perilous, and chaotic journey, riddled with mistakes, endless struggles, and sacrifice. Phil Knight opens up in ways few CEOs are willing to do.”.
