Happy Holidays! Christmas is one of my favorite times of year in Prague. It’s the perfect sendoff before the long, gray winter. My first Dec. 25 in Prague was full of memories of mulled wine, goose and carp and the tree lighting ceremony in Old Town Square. This year, I’ll be hosting my first Christmas dinner party, which means, like many expats, the party will be moving to inside the home. First off, we have our holiday logistics which gives you the low down on everything from where to buy your turkey (if you decide to skip carp), how to dispose of your Christmas tree, what stores will be open and much more. Finding all the components for a Christmas dinner party can be daunting, so hopefully this takes out some of the guesswork. Then, our shopping guide will give you the best options for unique, locally made gifts to buy for loved ones back home. Don’t fall into the trap of buying something cheesy in the city center, when you can support local artisans.

Some of these gifts were a big hit among my relatives on my last trip home. We also included guides to Czech traditions and how navigate the Christmas markets. We close out our holiday package with a look at “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol,” an innovation ballet and Czech favorite that combines two classic Christmas stories. On a non-Christmas related note, we also got a chance to chat with Czech underwater photographer Alice Bochňáková about her impressive technique that has won her much recognition in the art world. Find out how she was able to hone her craft over the last 15 years. Then of course we have our list of New Year’s Eve events and places where you can say goodbye to 2019 and welcome 2020 no matter what your style. On behalf of the Prague Resident staff, we’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you in 2020.

Being asked to describe his own music, Christian Löffler states that he tries to combine melancholy with euphoria. „All my music is connected by a gloomy spirit, which is minted by a warm sincerity. I try to merge all kinds of different acoustic colors to obtain this feeling in my music.”
Sure, there’s the Nutcracker, but it’s become a bit of a pre-Christmas tradition that the Royal Moscow Ballet, a renowned ballet ensemble, comes to Europe during Advent. The best Russian dancers perform full of love, passion and sadness - Swan Lake - to the music of P. I. Tchaikovsky.

Ten things you need to know about
Czech Christmas Christmas time is our favorite time of the year, especially here in the Czech Republic. If you’re visiting, you should probably be aware of the basics, and some of the more quirky Czech traditions. Christmas Eve is the main day of celebration – with a family dinner and the opening of gifts while Christmas Day is more low-key. Here’s ten ways Christmas time in the Czech Republic might be different than what you’re used to…
Happy Name Day... Got you an apple!
Move over Santa, It's baby Jesus! Unlike most Germanic cultures, baby Jesus (Ježíšek) brings the presents, not Santa Claus. Gifts are delivered during dinner through an open window and the presents are left under the tree. Before you start picturing infant Jesus carrying in a kids bike it should be noted there are really no images associated with the divine being.
Happy Name Day, Adam and Eve! Hey kids, the Devil will get you! Forget Santa Claus’ naughty or nice list. Saint Mikuláš Day is enough to scare any misbehaving child into obedience for the entire year. Celebrated in Old Town Square and in many Czech villages, this holiday puts a twist on the classic lump of coal. As the legend goes, on the eve of Dec. 5 Saint Mikuláš (not Santa Claus), an angel and a devil wander through the streets asking children if they’ve been good this year. Children usually respond with a yes, a song or a poem. Good children receive candies and fruit, while bad children get a lump of coal or spoiled potatoes. However, truly terrible children are dragged to Hell by the devil. No wonder so many youngsters are spotted crying in Old Town Square on this day when people dress up as the Saint and his companions.

PRAGUE RESIDENT | December 2019
Similar to a birthday, a Name Day involves celebrating a day of the year that is associated with one's given name. Homage is paid to those bearing the name of the first man and woman on December 24.
...and Speaking of Apples During or after Christmas dinner, each person cuts an apple down the middle to see if it has a star, which means they will survive the next year, or a cross, which means they will die (Luckily it’s almost impossible to get a cross).
Put a ring on it... Tired of swiping on Tinder in search of love? December is the time of year for single women to predict if they will be married in the next year. Close down your app and go throw a shoe over your shoulder instead. If the shoe’s toe is pointing to the door, you’ll be at the altar within the year. Or if you happen to be walking by an elder tree you can shake to see if you hear a dog bark, which makes perfect sense.
There's Carp in the bathtub! A traditional Czech Christmas dinner is made up of several courses, including fish soup, bread with honey, potato salad, fruit and of course fried carp. This meal dates back to the 18th century when carp was cheap enough to be a commonplace dish in many Czech kitchens. Now in the days leading up to Dec. 24, Christmas markets will begin selling live carp from large vats of water. Many families keep the slippery fish in their bathtubs until it ends up on their dinner plates. A perfect new (and temporary) friend for the kids.
Seeing Golden Pigs Looking for a bit of luck? Perhaps try the Czech tradition of fasting all day before the big Christmas dinner. Superstition has it that if you see a golden pig (zlaté prasátko) – you'll have good luck for all of the upcoming year.
First one to leave the dinner table dies... Unlike other countries, the Czech Republic’s main holiday festivities are on Dec. 24. This is the day where the Christmas feast is served, which is often connected with many superstitions and customs. While many of these aren’t practiced today, mostly because it would take forever to get through the meal, many involve wealth, good luck or death. For example, it is said that the first person to leave the table on Christmas Eve will be the first to die in the new year, and so everyone should get up and leave the table at the same time. Rather than enjoy leftovers in the days to come, you should bury them around trees so they bear fruit. And don’t forget to put fish scales under your dinner plate or in your wallet to bring wealth. Ew.
More Christmas ways to die Superstition and fortune-telling seems to surround the traditional Czech Christmas, foretelling not just upcoming success, but also impending death. Families put a candle in a walnut shell and watch where the walnut boat floats, which provides a prediction for the upcoming year – once again including death as one of the many outcomes. Other superstitions include pouring molten lead into water and reading the shapes to determine fate in the upcoming year.
St. Stephens and Chill A more recent Czech tradition which takes place on Svátek svatého Štěpána (or St. Stephen's Day) involves jumping into a freezing cold lake or cold river. In Prague, you can join the plunge into the Vltava by the National Theatre. We'd recommend bringing your own towel and a bottle of slivovice.

Holiday Logistics
Useful tips for surviving the holidays in Prague By Nicole Ely Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but let’s face it. It’s also one of the most stressful. There’s holiday parties, meal planning, gift buying and the list goes on and on. In order to help you have a perfect and stress-free (or least minimized) Christmas, we’ve compiled some useful information on where to get your Christmas tree, store openings and more.
Holiday cooking You’re hosting Christmas dinner but the local hypermarkets don’t have those unique special ingredients you want to make your holiday meal special. Ditch the chain grocery stores and head to these farmers’ markets instead. Both are known for their excellent local produce, holiday cookies and cakes. These are also good places to pick up a last-minute ornament or small gift. Náplavka & Heřmaňák farmers’ market: Dec. 7, 14 and 21, 8:00–14:00.
No carp, turkey please If you want to embrace Czech tradition and cook carp for your Christmas dinner, our hats are off to you. If you want to cook turkey, something not readily available in Prague, here are some places you can go. Robertson sells whole turkeys, as well as turkey crowns, breasts and legs. This also a good spot to get a Christmas ham if you prefer pork with your poultry. Makro also sells whole turkeys if you have a membership card. You can also reserve a turkey online at Prominent e-shop (krutimaso.cz), the Czech Republic’s largest processor of turkey meat. If all else fails or if you don’t care about cooking the turkey whole, you can pick up legs and breasts at Tesco.
What’s open and getting there You’re in Prague during one of the most magical times of the year, but unfortunately many businesses might have limited hours or close early. While most tourist attractions will be closed on public holidays, many of the city’s squares will be open so you can still stroll through the markets on Christmas Eve. Some restaurants will be open, but many are booked in advance so make sure you call ahead and make a reservation. While local convenience stores and smaller shops might be open, depending on
the owner, stores larger than 200 square meters will be closed on Dec. 25–26 and Jan. 1. On Christmas Eve, many shops and shopping centers will be open early, but most close early in the afternoon between 14:00 and 17:00. The metro will run at six to eight minute intervals, with limited service beginning at 16:00. At midnight trams will run in 30-minute intervals. The busiest time is when travelers flock to Prague starting Dec. 27 for New Year’s Eve. All attractions and shops will be open during this time to take advantage. If you’re interested in a concert or show on Dec. 31, many venues have early performances. Restaurants, clubs and bars often extend their hours for New Year’s Eve. The metro will also have extended service until 2:00, and trams will operate normally until 22:00 when they will run in 20 minute intervals.
Christmas tree shopping While the Christmas markets have you covered on gifts and ornaments, most don’t sell Christmas trees. Not to worry. Many grocery stores and public squares will have lots for you to select the perfect spruce, pine or fur for your living room. If you’re worried about ecological impact, all of the Czech Republic’s Christmas trees come from farms grown specifically for this time of year, not the public forest. If you’d like a tree, but don’t
have a car to transport it to your house, you can order one online at stromkyonline.cz and have it delivered. Most people in the Czech Republic discard their tree by Three King’s Day on Jan. 6, when waste services except to collect more than 300,000 trees, according to CTK. If you miss this deadline, you still have through February for the city to collect it. Discarded trees are often recycled into mulch for gardening or converted to other energy sources. Do not place trees in regular garbage containers or with the mixed trash as they can take up too much space. Place them next to the containers instead or at your flat’s recycling containers.
Festive decorations You have the tree figured out, but holiday decorations don’t stop there. You can purchase ornaments at most Christmas markets where you can find hand-blown glass ornaments, a Czech specialty that dates back to the 13th century. Karel Makovský is also a good place to check out hand crafted wooden decorations. If you’re interested in adding a few touches of holly to your home or if you like Poinsettia plants, you can stop by any florist or nursery. Make sure to keep your Poinsettia out of the cold if you want it to maintain its red leaves. If you’re buying your tree at a local market, you can also pick up some mistletoe to hang in your doorway for a surprise kiss. December 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Two tales reimagined
Ballet weaves together two classic Christmas stories
By Nicole Ely It’s the suburbs of 19th century London on Christmas Eve. The familiar character Ebenezer Scrooge, Charles Dickens’ greedy moneylender, is busy reminding his borrowers of what they owe him. Little does he know that spirits, a Satanic sabbath and a nutcracker await him. The story is a well-known holiday classic about redemption, but this one has an unexpected twist thanks to Hungarian choreographer Youri Vàmos. Instead of giving audiences just one classic Christmas story, Vàmos gives them two. “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol,” playing at the National Theatre through Jan. 11, tells the dual stories of Scrooge and Clara, the girl whose nutcracker magically comes to life. Since its debut in Saint Petersburg in 1892, “The Nutcracker” has been popular with audiences for ages. It has undergone many reiterations in choreography and story since its premiere. Vàmos’s version, which had its first performance in 1988 in Bonn, elevates the tale above a meer Christmas story into a fresh, but timeless adventure that is great for all ages, all times of the year. It first came to Prague in December 2004 and went on to be a big hit. “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol” is not Vàmos’s first time he has added a different take on
a classic story. He often adds imaginative revisions to classical works. For example, his production of “The Sleeping Beauty” became “Anastasia–The Last Daughter of the Romanov Czars.” Vàmos started his career as a ballet dancer at the State Ballet School in Budapest. He’s spent most of his professional career in Germany after he was offered a contract at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. From there he gravitated to choreography until eventually becoming artistic director of Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, where he enjoyed considerable success for 13 years. His performances often sold out and earned him great recognition. Many consider him to be one of the best choreographic storytellers of today. Petr Zuska, the artistic director of the National Theatre Ballet in Prague called him “the last ballet narrator.” Vàmos is also one of the last European choreographers who aims to keep full-length ballets, with “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol” clocking in at two hours with a 20-minute intermission. While staying true to the traditional foundation of his art, Vàmos breathes new life into his productions by focusing on expressing the psychological nuances of his characters. The ballet opens with “A Christmas Carol.” After Scrooge’s accountant Bob Cratchit is caught making fun of his boss’s cantankerous spirit, he is fired on
the spot leaving him without the money to buy Christmas gifts. Clara, instead of being a part of the bourgeois Stahlbaum family, is Bob Cratchit’s daughter who had hoped to receive a toy nutcracker for Christmas. In this version, it is Scrooge who breaks the nutcracker, not her bullying brother. From there much of the stories progress as they did in their original versions. Scrooge is visited by ghosts and is plagued by visions of hell if he doesn’t change his ways. Clara eventually dances with her nutcracker, once the broken toy transforms into a prince in the famous pas de deux. Luckily for fans of the traditional “Nutcracker,” many of the most celebrated aspects of the show remain in Vàmos’s version. In addition to the pas de deux, the Dance of Nations in the final act also stayed. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s amazing score has also been relatively untouched, so fans of the Russian composer can still enjoy the lightness his music brings to the story. A beautiful tale of the power of Christmas being able to transform human character, “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol” is the perfect show to buy tickets to this holiday season. You can purchase tickets online at narodni-divadlo.cz. December 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Building Tension
An office full of spies, a plagiarized filling station and a pricey public toilet are among this month’s collection of bizarre Czech news items By Samuel Beckwith, PraguePig.com Recent weeks have seen a series of bizarre stories about buildings in the Prague suburbs. On October 22, Czech public radio’s iROZHLAS news site revealed that an unremarkable-looking office building in Prague 6-Dejvice was being used as a secret base by the Úřad pro zahraniční styky a informace (ÚZSI; Office for Foreign Relations and Information), one of the three main Czech intelligence agencies. Embarrassingly for the ÚZSI, iROZHLAS’s journalists relied solely on publicly available sources for their information. The security lapse began when an ÚZSI employee was rapidly promoted from undercover operative to deputy director of the agency. When his name was mentioned at a press conference, journalists began digging and discovered that the official’s promotion had been so rapid that he hadn’t had time to completely cover his tracks. The Justice Ministry maintains a publicly available online business register on its justice.cz website and, through this, iROZHLAS was able to trace a company registered in the ÚZSI employee’s name back to an address in Dejvice (not a million miles from the Russian and Chinese embassies). Justice.cz also listed the names of other people and businesses registered at that address, at least some of them presumably fronts for covert intelligence work. iROZHLAS chose not to reveal the agent’s name or the building’s address but later that evening, TV Nova’s ratings-topping Televizní noviny news show had retraced iROZHLAS’s steps and was reporting from outside the building at the center of the scandal. Oops.
Forecourt ruling The stakes weren’t quite as high over in Prague 8-Libeň, but the design of a new filling station still proved controversial enough to lead to a bizarre lawsuit. Atelier SAD, a Prague architectural practice, completed a celebrated filling station in Matúškovo, Slovakia in 2011. The unusual design, resembling concrete mushrooms, won plaudits around the world and even featured in a “most beautiful petrol stations” listicle on the UK’s Daily Telegraph website. Earlier this year, SAD was surprised to begin receiving inquiries about its new filling station in Prague, and soon learned that a near-identical building was being constructed in Libeň. Angry that their work had been plagiarized, SAD successfully sued the owners of the copycat building. Rather than money, however, SAD sought design changes to the Voctářova street gas station, which has been forced to cover up the distinctive lighting and numbering on its columns, and to put up a sign informing customers that the building isn’t the work of SAD architects Adam Jirkal & Jaroslav “Jerry” Koza. Zdeněk Kodýtek, whose firm Gragnani Invest operates the Libeň filling station was unrepentant, telling the Czech edition of Forbes magazine, “We aren’t some Vietnamese from SAPA making ‘Abibas’ tennis shoes. We didn’t copy anything. Everything is different.”
The final stop on PraguePig.com’s alternative city tour is the children’s playground on Anastázova street, Prague 6-Březnov, where the local council is under fire for spending 3.6 million crowns (more than 140,000 euros) on a new public toilet. Opposition politicians have pointed out that the “one-cabin WC with babychanging table” cost as much as a small apartment in the same area.
Daisy Lee vs. Lady Dee (October 2019) As advertised, the feuding porn stars settled their differences at a boxing match at the Erotický veletrh Erofest trade fair in Prague 9-Letňany. Karolína “Daisy Lee” Urbanová knocked out Drahomíra “Lady Dee” Jůzová, after which the match degenerated into a series of sex acts. In the words of Extra.cz, “Instead of fighting, there was licking.”
Updates
Death of Milan Jakubů (November 2019) The driver of the Ford Mustang that crashed headon with senior military intelligence officer Milan Jakubů’s Škoda Rapid has been charged with causing death and serious bodily harm through negligence. According to a witness quoted by TV Nova, the Mustang was on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash, and racing another car.
There have been developments in several of the stories I’ve written about in the past few months: Marie Drašnarová & Přemysl Herzán (October 2019) Police announced that the missing Prague couple’s bodies had been found in the Švihov reservoir (also known as Želivka), in Central Bohemia. A 24-year-old student has already been charged with their murder; his accomplice, also 24, has been charged with fraud. Petra Janáková’s Pregnancy (October 2019) Two months after giving birth, the convicted murderer was sent back to prison after being charged with perjury. Janáková had claimed her pregnancy was the result of being raped by prison guards. But DNA tests show that none of the three men she accused is the father of her child, who is reported to be a (male) fellow prisoner.
And finally… A runaway camel surprised drivers on the stretch of road between Bedřichov and Hrabětice, in snowy conditions in the Liberec Region. One driver, who won’t be short of a Christmas card this year, captured an amazing dashcam image of the escaped animal.

PROFILE
Beneath the Surface The art of photographer Alice Bochňáková
Alice Bochňáková
By Nicole Ely It resembles a battle scene from early Renaissance paintings you might’ve seen in galleries. A man, clad in Roman attire and face twisted in a rageful yell, thrusts a sword forward against two oncoming assailants. On his arm is a young girl in white, whose innocent expression is cast away from the oncoming violence. This isn’t a painting at all. It’s a photograph, the surreal atmosphere captured underwater by Alice Bochňáková. For the past 15 years, Bochňáková has been perfecting this unique photography method of submerging her subjects in water. What started as a hobby has earned her international acclaim. She’s had exhibitions all over Europe and her work earned her the award of Qualified European Photographer, a prestigious accolade given by the Federation of European Photographers. As an avid scuba diver, Bochňáková first got the idea for her underwater photography while diving on vacation. She noticed a girl with long hair near the surface of the water and was inspired by the way sunbeams cut through the water and illuminated her. “I said to myself, I must try to do it,” she says. She began experimenting in her indoor swimming pool, which doubles as a scuba diving classroom. Using her daughters and friends as models, she practiced manipulating the lighting, background and other elements to create mystical scenes that looked torn from the pages of fairy tales. Her work went through many iterations until she perfected her technique. For example she “tried shooting without bubbles,” she says, “but
many people didn’t believe that the photos were underwater.” After filling up disks with thousands of photos, she eventually decided to show a friend her work. He liked it so much he decided to arrange an exhibition for her. Since then, her underwater portraits and scenes have been shown in exhibitions throughout Europe and she’s collaborated with many artists and commercial organizations. The preparation for each photoshoot is intense and takes hours, which is why Bochňáková is currently focusing on shooting rather than organizing another exhibition. She often works morning to evening just to prepare one shot. The shoots require good communication with her subjects. Costuming is often weighted in order to control its flowing appearance, which can make it hard for the models when they need to breathe, so communicating is key. Her daughter Bety remembers one shoot where the dress she wore was so heavy it was hard to get up to the surface. Bochňáková herself usually wears her scuba mask when she’s shooting. Her method is so unique that Bochňáková hosts workshops for friends and artists demonstrating how she achieves this dreamlike effect. “My
husband often asks me why I don’t recreate the effect in production,” she says. The final product shows that it wouldn’t be the same. Bochňáková is always open to collaboration. The warrior photography mentioned above was a joint effort with the National Theatre, who provided the costuming. Just recently, she wrapped up a project with graphic artist Anna Milerová that looks at humanizing the immense amount of plastic floating in our oceans. To do this, they submerged girls surrounded by plastic waste, evoking imagery of animals trapped in these drifting islands of garbage. The photographs are currently in processing. For Bochňáková, the true beauty of photography is about the preservation of memory. When she began shooting on her first Olympus film camera when she was 16, it was so she could connect to certain moments. Even now, that sentimentality is present in her work. Her portfolio shows couples in loving embraces, soon-to-be parents in the last trimester of pregnancy and mothers embracing their young children, all frozen as if in magical suspension. RESTAURANT OPENINGS
Hanzu
Big Smokers
If you’re a fan of SaSaZu, the ultra-trendy Asian fusion restaurant in Holesovice, then you will love its sister Hanzu. Just a block from the Staromestska metro stop in Old Town, Hanzu is serving up amazing sushi insta-worthy cocktails. The new venue opens just as its older sibling celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Smoking meat is a delicate process that takes time and a lot patience. The guys at Big Smokers have the hot smoking process down, and each delicious piece of meat they serve up has taken hours to make. But, we knew Big Smokers would be good - it's from the same folks from Mr. Hotdog.

Taking its cue from cafes in Vienna and Paris, Café Graff has a simple elegance that makes a casual coffee or meal a sophisticated experience. You can’t go wrong with their selection of gorgeous desserts from their patisseri and chef specialties from their kitchen like lamb knuckle.
You can explore Bio-dynamic Bohemian and Moravian wines, as well as selections from all over Europe. There's also a light menu that consists of cheeses and pâtés, or try their fermented vegetables also known as fermented bowls, which don't compromise with the interfere with the taste of the wine. The management and ownership team of Autentista is an eclectic who's who in the Prague wine and culinary scene, so we have high hopes.

THE COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It’s always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
ALCHEMIST BAR

BULLERBYN
Chodská 17, Prague 2
anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile, the bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
bullerbyn.cz Inspired by Astrid Lundgren’s Bullerbyn stories, this unique bar takes you on a trip down memory lane. The signature cocktail selection is accompanied by whimsical sketches that remind you of your childhood fairytales. On top of cocktails they serve amazing lunch and dinner dishes, and brunch on the weekends. +420 723 970 761 for Reservations.
SHRINK’S OFFICE
CASH ONLY BAR
shrinksoffice.cz AnonymouS’s smaller, more intimate sister. This cocktail therapy bar comes in the form of a hidden, calming cellar inbetween the bustling Wenceslas Square and Národní třída areas. After ringing a bell to get in, you will be given a Rorschach test which the mixologists will use to prepare your drink. +420 608 911 884 for Reservations.

CAFÉ BAR PILOTŮ
barandbooks.cz Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the casual hangout in Mánesova and slightly more formal experience in Týnská). Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Reservations online.
The spacious Café Pilot feels like your grandad’s study with leather upholstery, tables modeled after billiards and floor to ceiling bookshelves. MADE IN THE
CZECH REPUBLIC
IDEAS BEER FOR HER
BEER FOR HIM
The classy bottles from Aurosa will be enough to quiet any woman’s complaints about getting beer as a Christmas present. Wanting to bring a certain sophistication to the Czech Republic’s favorite beverage, this brand offers two different beers in marbled containers. Once you drink them all, you can always use the bottle as a vase. 99Kč www.aurosa.cz
If you’re a man and you don’t like beer, are you a man really? Luckily the Czech Republic is the beer mecca of the world, and their drinking habits date back to practically the beginning of time. Strahov Monastic Brewery, just a short walk from Prague Castle, has been brewing since the 13th century, so they know what they’re doing. Their new doppelbock, which will be available from Dec. 3, has just the right amount of hoppy bitterness to balance its malty sweetness, not a bad combination for a beer or a man. 120Kč (for half liter) Strahovské nádvoří 301 233 353 155
GREEN THUMB (OR NOT) PACK AND GO!
SKY'S THE LIMIT
You can’t walk through the streets of Prague without spotting a Braasi backpack. Architects Eliška Slámová and Šimon Brabec created the brand as a hobby in 2013 and quickly grew a following. Their popular Wicker design is water resistant, made with canvas and perfect for urban cyclists who worry about keeping their laptops dry on their commute. Or anyone who wants to look cool while also toting around a load of stuff. 4590Kč www.braasi.com
Some people like houseplants, others like the idea of houseplants. Mostly because they struggle to keep any kind of multicellular organism alive. So forget the Tillandsia and opt for this simple kill-proof pendant for the plant murderer in your life. Crafted from enamel, all of Hemleva’s pins are original designs. First comes the plant pin, then actual plants, then a dog, then a child, right? 250Kč www.hemleva.com
For almost the same price as a fully loaded Tesla Model S, you can buy your significant other for the world’s fastest ultralight aircraft, the VL3 evolution. ART.07 BODY BAG Czech designer Alex Monhart has been producing some beautiful products over the past few years, and we pretty much love everything that comes from her mind. Our latest obsession is this Italian leather “body bag” which can be worn across the body, as a belt bag or a clutch. SKINNY IN A BOX Soap that will magically trim a few kilos off your midsections sounds too good to be true. That’s because it is. From the 50s to the late 80s, many Czechoslovak artists spent time designing original posters for all genres of films. Let’s face it. Handmade Christmas gifts are cute when they’re from young children. When they’re from adults, they’re usually crap. Best leave it to Local Artists. Their selection of hand-crafted ceramic mugs come from one of Prague's oldest potters and are unique, attractive and won’t make you want to accidentally on purpose break them on your kitchen floor. 325 Kč Karmelitská 26 www.localartists.cz
SHINY THINGS With the popularity of the Czech garnet, it is easy to come across fakes. Don’t get ripped off by one scammers in the city center. Instead head to Granat, which is the only company that owns the rights to extract Czech garnet from local mines, so you know you’re getting good quality. You can buy broaches, necklaces, rings and it doesn’t stop there. If it’s good enough for Emperor Rudolf II, it’s good enough for your passive-aggressive mother-in-law. Just kidding.
