The sky is the limit for September This may be our favorite time of year. It gets cooler outside, the wine comes into season (along with all the wine festivals), and of course, the kids go back to school. Last year, when interviewing Chef Zdenek Pohlreich for our sister publication, The Prague Visitor, we were intrigued that most of the "good" restaurants 20 years ago were located in hotels. If you wanted good food outside of the traditional Czech dish, it's quite simply where you had to go. With the changing culinary landscape in Prague, there are undoubtedly hundreds of options if you’re looking for a great meal these days. But, we shouldn’t forget the pioneers, as hotel restaurants still offer up world-class meals, even for the locals.

And while it’s not a “daiiy menu” price (most of the degustation menus are over 1000kc), it’s still noteworthy for a special night out or business lunch. Speaking of world class meals, we also visit Gallery 44 in Old Town. Despite being in the busy hub of the tourist area, the experience is anything but made for the masses. With a quarterly guest chef and artwork from DSC gallery on display, this medieval basement turned gallery turned restaurant is worth the visit. The restaurant is also reaching new heights this month, providing the restaurant experience for Dinner in the Sky. Dinner in the Sky returns to Prague from September 5th through 22nd, taking groups of
diners high above the Prague skyline for a once in a lifetime view and dinner experience. It’s a four course meal served over the course of an hour at a staggering 50 meters above Prague. We also go down under – and meet the owners of The Royal Down Under. The Aussie themed pub truly has everything you could ask for – namely great food, great beer, sports, and a kids area to enjoy the aforementioned indulgences. Last of all, Jack Daniels presents Burgerfest this month on September 7th & 8th. The largest hamburger festival in Europe always bring thousands of attendees looking for the perfect burger experience. Enjoy September!

Ariana Grande Wednesday, September 4, 19:30 With over 30 billion streams online, we probably don’t have to tell you who Ariana Grande is. From her start on the kid's channel Nickelodean to sell out concerts, Grande's personal life seems to make as many headlines as her artistic endevours lately- but the music is still great and her latest album is top notch. The multi-platinum Grammy awardwinning American pop singer brings her critically acclaimed stage performance to Prague’s O2 Arena as part of her current “Thank U, Next” tour. There was a collective gasp amongst Foodies in 2018 when Alcron lost it's Michelin Star which it had held since 2012. But awards don't only speak for the intimate restaurant (which by the way was also named #7 in Europe's Best Fine Dining Restaurant). Chef Roman Paulus continues to prove Alcron is still a contender, serving up a menu of delicate dishes. Our recommendation is the three course degustation menu, which starts at 1800kc per person. They also offer up cooking classes with the chef, starting at 4500kc.

During and just after communism, many say that hotels were the only place you could get a world class meal. Of course, Prague's culinary choices have increased, but there's still some amazing hotel restaurants we shouldn't forget for special occasions, the perfect night out, or a business lunch.
(Located in Dancing House) Jiráskovo nám. 1981/6, 120 00 Nové Město, www.gfrest.cz +420 221 984 160
Ginger and Fred was the panoramic jewel on top of the Dancing House long before the Dancing House added their hotel three years ago. The seasonal menu is changed four times per year with daily specials, and the international menu prepared by Chef Rudolf Dolezal is full of dishes great for both a great private lunch or even romantic dinner.

Executive Chef Stephen Senewiratne only uses the freshest produce, much of it sourced from local Czech farmers. The menu balances the best of Europe and Asia, presented in a contemporary manner. Our recommendation is the duck. And if you're looking for the ultimate private dining or function space, there's the Dom Pérignon P2 Cellar. Spices is even a good place just to grab a cocktail.

The restaurant has many accolades. including recommendation in the Michelin Guide from 2011-2015 and a place in the Top 20 Restaurants in the Gault Millau Guide 2014/2015. The degustation menu starts at 1350kc, and there's a weekday three course business lunch at just 290kc.

We think Elements may be one of the best kept secrets in Prague. The recently opened restaurant took the space of Vltava Restaurant and is unrecognizable in it's new skin. Like the decor, the menu celebrates the simplicity of lightness, with a menu based on modern Italian cuisine. Our recommendation is the four course degustation menu for 1950kc (2950kc with wine pairing), which is based on the four elements: air, water, fire and earth. Atmosphere, amazing cuisine and the service is impeccable.

Augustine puts an emphasis on fresh ingredients and simple dishes served with a unique presentation. Dining at Augustine is a holy experience. Maybe that's because the Refectory is the former dining hall of the monks who once inhabited the former monestary turned hotel. The original 18th century frescoes aren't the only thing left behind by the monks they also left behind their beer recipe and beer cave. The artificial grotto was created centuries ago to brew the beer, and is now home to the hotel's unique bar. Try the seasonal two course menu from 460kc.

The Dark knight with a steam-cleaner The convicted killer who removed Charles Bridge’s graffiti may not have been the hero Prague deserved but he might have been the one it needed By Samuel Beckwith, PraguePig.com
Miloslav Černý was undeniably man of the month in the Czech news, adding more weight to that old cliché that truth is stranger than fiction. When two German tourists were caught spraypainting the Charles Bridge on July 15, they can hardly have imagined the chain reaction they would set off. First came outrage at the vandalization of one of Prague’s iconic landmarks--an act that Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib of the Czech Pirate Party (really) described as “cultural barbarism” and which prompted an apology from the German ambassador. Next came punishment for the two men responsible. And then the question arose of how to remove spray-paint from a 15th century bridge without damaging the stonework. Experts from the Národní památkový ústav (National Heritage Institute) ruled out mechanical cleaning and opted instead to test a variety of chemical cleaners on a small section of the graffiti. On July 27, nearly two weeks after the bridge had been graffitied, the NPÚ team began preliminary work. The cleaning itself wasn’t due to begin until two days later, and would then continue until August 15--a further 17 days. For one man, that was too long. When restorers returned to the site on Monday morning, the graffiti was gone. A phantom cleaner had struck overnight, removing the paint in a matter of hours. Experts were quick to condemn the “amateur” cleaning, which they said had left behind traces of the spray-paint. For many Praguers, however, the mysterious cleaner was a folk hero.
Impulsive acts
Following intense media interest, the phantom cleaner revealed his identity three days later. Miloslav Černý explained to the Seznam website’s online TV station that he earned his living removing graffiti and had used a high-pressure steam cleaner to clean the bridge. According to Černý, his technique only works when the paint is still relatively fresh, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. “Nothing happened for around 14 days and because I knew there was a time limit, I came to the place myself,” he told Seznam. Responding to criticism, Černý explained that
he had carried out the cleaning in the early hours of the morning, when visibility was poor, and offered to finish the job later, free of charge. In return, he cast doubt on the professionalism of the restorers’ work, saying he had spotted Graffitistop 2--“the cheapest [graffiti-cleaning product], which you can find at any drugstore”--at the site. “I’m convinced that every Czech wants Charles Bridge to look nice,” he explained. “That was my motivation, not to make the experts look stupid.” Quite how unlikely a hero Černý was emerged on August 2, when the phantom cleaner revealed to iDNES.cz that in 2000 he had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the double murder of his wife and her lover. Černý served eleven and a half years of the sentence and was released in 2012. Černý turned down Mayor Hřib’s offer of a financial reward for his guerrilla cleaning but a scheduled meeting between the convicted murderer and the Prague politician went ahead as planned. Instead, Černý demonstrated his cleaning techniques for the mayor, who said he shared Černý’s frustration at the length of time the official process had taken.
Animal round-up
In what initially seemed like a rare case of Brno outdoing the capital, four escaped green mambas were reported missing in the Czech Republic’s second city on August 8, far outstripping the solitary snake that made world headlines in Prague last year. The snakes’ owners reported the incident at a local
veterinary clinic, which passed on the alarming news to local police. According to Brno police spokesman Jakub Ghanem, the cops “systematically searched the area for an hour and a half, street by street, paying careful attention to treetops, where mamba-like bird-hunters tend to go. The officers returned to the area during the night and in the morning but didn’t see any snakes.” The police later learned that the same man, who they suspect owns the snakes illegally, had returned to the vet later that day and admitted that his pets had been at home all along. Brno cops had more tangible prey two days later, when four Vietnamese Pot-bellied pigs escaped from a mini zoo in the Moravian metropolis’s Lužánky park. Comedy capers ensued as the cops, assisted by firefighters, vets and mini-zoo employees attempted to recapture the surprisingly swift porkers--a process that lasted several hours. Elsewhere, evidence suggested that the Czech Republic’s most celebrated escaped animal--the puma that’s supposedly been roaming the country since June--may have left Moravia and headed back to Bohemia. On August 15, hunters near the village of Hajnice, in the Hradec Králové Region, found big cat tracks resembling those of a puma. In other puma-related news, a 36-year-old man who claimed to have spotted and photographed the fabled feline near Kroměříž, in the Zlín Region, in July, was charged with the crime of “spreading alarmist news” after it emerged that his photo had been downloaded from the internet.

Making the Market
Šárka Sedláčkova tells us why Prague's Eco-Friendly Heřmaňák is the next big thing
Having founded most of the relevant Farmer's Markets in Prague (including Naplavka), you could say Jirí Sedláčk and his wife Šárka Sedláčkova are a fresh produce power couple. This month, we sit down with Šárka to chat about Heřmaňák, the plastic bag-free Farmer's Market that is Prague's next big thing. Where in the world are your favorite farmers markets? In what ways are Prague lacking, or on the contrary better? We’re travelling with my husband only inside of Europe, we have never been outside the continent - which quite odd, isn’t it? But we find Europe itself so incredibly diverse and colorful. So, the most beautiful markets we experienced are in the most hidden locations. We have a saying here in Czech “where the foxes give you Good night...”, in locations placed far away from industrial or touristic areas tend to lie the best markets. An example would be an incredibly nice market in a small Burgundian town, Beaune, or in the fecund Swiss valley Wallis with its capital city Sion. What both these places have are a long history of habitation and planting with histories over a thousand years old. In addition, their food production is quite diverse, producing and cultivating cereals, fruits and vegetables on a large scale. You’re an experienced Farmer’s Market owner and producer, who started the markets in Náplavka, Jiří z Poděbrad, Kubáň and other places. How do they compare with others and what makes Heřmaňák different?
On one hand, it’s the people who have lived here all their lives within nice cohesive communities which formed here. On the other hand, it’s place itself - Řezáčovo Square. It’s small and surrounded by original houses from the 20s-30s with beautiful tall trees. In the summer shade it makes for a peaceful atmosphere; it’s cozy here. It’s right next to a busy street, Dukla Heroes, where there’s a quiet beautiful corner. Why did you choose Řezáčovo Square and Prague 7 for Heřmaňák Market? Several of our friends live around here, so part of it was chosen by mutual interaction. It was also cost effective because I wanted to save as much as possible on the market with different packaging, specifically to eliminate the waste of plastic bags. Because of this it’s smaller but ideal, we were able to start here without plastic bags! What products are most popular in Prague? I think the greatest interest is in fresh fruits and vegetables, good quality meat and sausages, fresh milk, butter, and other dairy products. Where are your vendors from, who are they? When I mentioned the vegetables, in Heřmaňák is one of the first vendors who was with us from the very beginning. The daughter of the best greengrocer from Náplavka’s market, Veronika and her husband, are from Tišice, the area of river Elbe, they’re at least fifth generation greengrocers who specialize mostly in salad and herbs, they’re one of
the best in their field. But in terms of the farmers market, they grow everything. Besides a regular selection of vegetables, they also have their own fresh fennel, eggplants, Romanesco broccoli and asparagus. During the season they offer around 80 crops and over 20 salad variations. Then there is the biofarm Babina from the Pilsner region with their bio beef, or fruit from the ecological farming of Bílé Podolí. The bakery is from Vysočina, the pork butchers hail from Pilsner. Biofarm with milk products is from Benešov area. The florist family is from Dřís, they work with their own garden and meadow flowers nearby. And of course, I must mention their amazing coffee, which is made here locally and is one of the best in Prague 7. Where do you see Heřmaňák and your other markets in the next 2 years? I would like to see satisfied and happy locals who can meet here, do shopping, have breakfast and sit to have a chat with friends, or even broil sausage and toast over a fire in the evening. I’m really glad that many people here have embraced the idea of reducing the waste of plastic bags and covers. I hope that this deviation from plastic bags will continue to grow here and outside the bounds of our community as well. For Heřmaňák, but also to our other markets, people have been bringing back egg shells and dried bread for hens - it feels as if people came back in time from the 70’s to help one another in the community, it’s a beautiful thing.

Marthy's Kitchen Masarykovo nábř. 2016/6, 120 00 Nové Město +420 608 999 436 | www.marthyskitchen.cz Our only complaint about Marthy's Kitchen in Vinohrady is that it's just too small, especially if you're not a morning person and don't like being near other people. Marthy's new "Manes" location in Vinohrady lets patrons stretch their legs a bit, with upstairs and downstairs seating. Although larger, the second location retains all the charm of the first, along with the same favorites we've come to love Marthy's Kitchen.

It's been open a bit, but we think it's worth putting here. U Rarášků was a legendary venue, where actors, filmmakers, painters and other prominent figures of Prague nightlife gathered notably since the late 1970s. They did not mind the constant presence of secret police officers who even had their own desk. Located in the Schönkirch Palace (built between 1726 and 1734) on the site of four medieval houses, the restored wing of the palace has remains of Baroque fresco decorations. You can enjoy Pilsner Urquell and Kozel, or try the special on tap. Not a beer type? The wine selection varies with Moravian wines from Zapletal and Italian wines from Veneto, Puglia, Toscana, or Trentino.
New ramen bar and Japanese street food place opened in Žižkov. The interior alone is worth a visit, designed by minio, with a blossoming Sakura hanging from the ceiling. The place can is fairly big, as there are two floors: while upstairs it's possible to sit right at the bar and watch the chefs prepare hearty bowls in front of your eyes, below, you will find plenty of place to sit and a pleasant chill, which is absolutely ideal during these last summer days. The menu is ramen centered, offering fresh homemade noodles, but the twist is the anti ramen: mazemen, featuring noodles, pork, wakame salad, and daikon dressed in a mix of oil. Karaage is a popular street food based on fried chicken served with mayonnaise and togarashi, perfect for a lunch. september 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

The interior is cozy and charming with exposed visible brick walls, a fire burning stove and a multitude of books lining the walls. The first thing one sees is of course the cafe’s massive signature mirual on the far wall. The vibe is an industrial minimalistic sentiment. Collectively, the atmosphere leaves customers feeling that they are in the home setting of a close acquaintance rather than a popular business establishment. The baristas and staff are skilled craftsmen with friendly and knowledgeable

service. Standard coffee drinks are reasonably priced with espressos at 45kc and cappuccinos for 60kc. Muj Salek Kavy also offers filtered coffees with beans from Brazil, Rwanda and Colombia (70kc); or, one can have a flight tasting of all three varieties for 150kc. There is also the option of the day’s batch brew for 60kc. In addition, the cafe offers excellent teas (50-90kc), cocktails (70-120kc), and a nice selection of wines. Muj Salek Kavy is most notable for it’s great weekend brunches with five delicious breakfast meals all for under 200kc. This, paired with well crafted coffee, makes the cafe a top place for weekend morning gatherings. As such, and for the fact that the cafe is a bit small in size, finding a seat can be tricky. Something important to note, the cafe is a very popular establishment amongst locals and doesn’t accept reservations on weekends. If you arrive on a Saturday or Sunday, you will most likely have to wait for a table, and at times, the queue can seem daunting. It is; however, well worth the wait. And normally, customers don’t have to wait long as the turn over rate is fairly quick. To compensate for the wait, and to ensure quick turn around, orders will sometimes be taken while people wait and occasionally drinks are served as well. All in all, Muj Salek Kavy is a must visit for great brunch, its rich flavourful coffee drinks and reasonable prices

Located in the centre of Prague, near Wenceslas square, between Mustek and Narodni Trida metro stations, amongst the congestion of the city center, is a literal expansive oasis of plants, light and water known as Friends Coffee House. The cafe is on Palackého street which runs perpendicular to the tram lines passing through Wenceslas. A modest yellow sign out front of a small doorway belies the amazing openness of the cafe within. For the most part, Friends House is divided into three basic sections. The cafe is designed like a tunnel that runs from a small opening at the front to a wide stretch of chairs and space towards the back. Each section of the cafe is like a new environment of individuality and space. The entry room has cluttering of menus, signs and adverts strewn everywhere which gives the impression of a confining area and it is here where orders are placed for delicious drinks (espresso 49kc, algerian coffee 105kc) and delectable munchies (paninis 109kc, sandwiches 119kc). The midsection of Friends House changes drastically from the entry room, it is ablaze with light as the ceiling and whole left wall are made from glass windows that allow guests a view of an outdoor garden. The glass interior is ribbed with metal
Coffee breaks should include a break from the busy city as well as a premium cup of jo. Centrum Langhans provides this as a quiet, little cafe with affordable prices and an escape from the densely populated business district of Wenceslas square. Located at 37 Vodičkova street, the cafe is next to the Vaclavske Namesti tram stop and near the Mustek metro station. An excellent variety of quality coffee drinks at affordable prices are available, with espressos for 37 Kč and flat whites for 64 Kč. The coffee beans come from Brazil and Rwanda, and are roasted at Prague's famous, trusted local roastery, Mamacoffee. Other beverages available Langhans that aren’t easily found at other cafes are, Viennese coffee for 56 Kč, Czech Turkish coffee for 28 Kč and proper Chai Lattes with real spices of cinnamon, cardamom and others for 55 Kč. Several alcoholic drinks are also on offer. Cafe Langhans is a literal “hidden” gem, as it’s located at the back of Centrum FotoSkoda, a large photography store. This is because Centrum Langhans is most famous for its connection with a non-profit NGO that focuses on human rights and emergency relief efforts through funding from the purchase of
arches wrapped in long green hanging plants that tumble down. Nestled into the right wall, amongst the hanging plants and brightlight is a fountain of water which spills out a calming cascade and helps to keep the inside cool during hot summer days. Farther on, the cafe opens up even more into wide rooms with plenty of comfortable chairs and tables, and with enough space to fit large parties or study groups. It is common to see study groups as the cafe is perfect for university students to meet and hold sessions. The featured coffee comes from an inhouse affiliated roastory called, Leonora Coffee. Beans are 100% Arabica from Brazil and Columbia with hints of nuts and fruits that give Friend’s coffee a unique and individualized flavor. Friends is a reprieve on a hot day, an escape from the busy streets and a great spot for group get togethers.

An organization based in Prague that conducts long-term human aid projects in impoverished countries. Website for more information: https://www.clovekvtisni.cz. A charming open courtyard at the back of the photography store, with a large stone garden and unique fountain, welcomes customers to the peace and calmness of the cafe. Little wooden chairs and circular tables sit outside the cafe which is next to the Franciscan Gardens. The atmosphere inside the cafe is also low-key with several photographs of different third world countries adorning the walls, assortments of books along window sills and plenty of space for seating. Upstairs are conference rooms for lessons and lectures, making it an ideal place for presentations, meetings and lessons. It pays to know a tranquil spot where one can escape the craziness of the city and enjoy decent coffee drink, but this Langhans is also special for its active role in contributing to humanitarian aid.
Burgerfest 2019
Europe's largest hamburger festival returns Burgerfest, the largest burger festival in Europe, returns to Výstaviště Holešovice on September 7th and 8th. The two-days unique food-cultural festival was founded in 2012 and presents the culinary art of selected restaurants not only from Prague, but from the whole Czech Republic and from abroad. Also for the eighth year, Burgerfest joins forces with Jack Daniel's since everyone knows traditional American barbecue calls for traditional American whiskey. Burgers lovers can enjoy a quality drink at the Jack Daniel's truck, choosing between classic, honey or cinnamon flavor. Because barbecue is not only about great food and drinks, but also about entertainment, there will be interesting attractions waiting for visitors, such as a chillout zone, table football, and temporary tattoo artists. The opening ceremony will be held by the baby punk rock band Kašpárek V Rohlíku, and the lineup gets exciting as names such as Lake Malawi, the Czech representitives at the Eurovision 2019, will be performing during the festival. "I'm very excited to present this edition of the festival", says Zdeněk Střížek from Bejzment. "We started with six restaurants in about 80 square meters eight years ago, today we have a space of 10000 square meters and more than 50 restaurants and food trucks participating to the event", he continues, "there are people coming from all over Europe to see how we do it in Prague, it's incredible". In today's busy times burgers have become a symbol of fast and often not very high quality fast food. But Burgerfest's mission is to prove that even a traditional American food like burger has its place in gastronomy of a certain level. Visitors can look forward to burgers by George Prime Burger, Black Dog, Take Eat EZ, and Tommy’s food truck .And what would a burger be without beer, especially here in the Czech Republic. Burgerfest's main partner is Budějovický Budvar who brings beer from micro breweries such as Unětický Pivovar, Permon or Nachmelená opice. The biggest event of the weekend for meat lovers is certain to be the BBQ contest on Saturday evening, held by KCBS, the Kansas City Barbeque Society, a competitive cooking organization founded in 1985 by Carolyn and Gary Wells, and Rick Welch. It is the largest competitive barbecue organization in the world. Each year, KCBS holds more than 500 competitions across the world and has over 20,000 members that consist of Certified BBQ Judges (CBJ's), cook teams, contest reps, contest organizers and all around lovers of great food and community. Hungry visitors can look out for chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder or "Boston Butt" and, of course beef brisket cooked by teams from
Hungary, Austria, Germany, and Czech Republic (with our hometown favorites including Sale&Pepe or Bohemian BBQ). Of course the winners are chosen by the festival fans. It's possible to vote your favorite restaurant and burger through the website of the festival once per day buti f you can't make it, the competitions will also be live streamed on the website and on the official Facebook page of the event, including the opening ceremony and the cooking shows. The festival isn't just limited to food and drinks, as workshops and demonstrations, shows, and entertainment round out the weekend. Foodie and BBQ guru Ted Reader, from Toronto, Canada, is also making an appearance. In 2010, Reader attempted to set a world record for cooking the largest hamburger and has also gained fame for his cookbooks. Another host in attendance will be blogger and influencer Burger Boss, from Verona, Italy an institution for all burger lovers. "Game of Thrones" fans will be surprised by the live show "Game of Burgers", where artists playing with ice and fire will battle for the throne. Eager for some more adrenaline? The Hummer simulator will take adult visitors to a bumpy off road ride, while children can ride a miniature size of the iconic utility vehicle. And with the support of the American Embassy, sport lovers can enjoy playing
American football or learn something new about baseball. Burgerfest thinks about young visitors as well: at the children zone offered by Primáček, kids can enjoy a good variety of activities, while families can learn how to prepare mozzarella with Antonio Manieri or enjoy stand up comedy by the comedy troupe from Na Stojáka. Burgerfest also gives back to the community. This year it will support the foundation Women for Women with projects that will provide lunch for less lucky kids and programs that will support young chefs. Additionally, Burgerfest is thinking ecologically by choosing reusable cups instead of plastic throughout the whole festival this year. Tickets can be bought on presale until the 31st of August on GoOut or on the Burgerfest website with different options: one day entrance is for 100 CZK, two days is 200 CZK per person. Family tickets are also available and children under 120 cm enter for free. VIP tickets include exklusive meet & greet Chef Ted Reader and founder of Burgerfest Zed Strizek, Some food&drink ass well. "In beef we trust".

The Royal Down Under Where families, sports and kangaroos converge By Nicole Ely Just below a theater famous for it's burlesque show and on Vinohradská is one of the most familyfriendly sports bars in Prague. The Royal Down Under might look unassuming at first with its simple decor and televisions streaming cricket, but expat owners Ashley McGlynn and Meagan Hasa aim to make the spot a haven for parents who want to enjoy a drink or a meal while watching a game. Australian McGlynn first came to Prague in the late 1990s. “I’d like to say it was Franz Kafka and history that brought me, but it was really just pretty girls and 1998,” he says. Although he returned home after a few weeks in the Czech capital, the city still lingered in his mind. Then, back in Sydney he struck up a conversation with another pretty Czech girl who eventually became his wife, and the two found themselves back in Prague to start a family. That was nine years ago. Hasa’s journey also involved marrying a Czech. Originally from South Africa, she and her CzechAustralian husband Vojta relocated from London to Prague when Vojta’s family bought the abandoned Chateau Hostačov. They have since transformed it into an elegant, award-winning hotel and restaurant considered by many to be the best of its kind in the Czech Republic. “Our relationship started, like many expats, with the great game of cricket,” McGlynn says. McGlynn and Vojta met while playing cricket for the Australian Chamber of Commerce. The two quickly bonded over their sons as well as their love of “food and booze and sports,” according to McGlynn. It was this combination that eventually led to their opening of The Royal Down Under this summer. They realized there was a hole in the market for family-friendly sports pubs. Prague weather can be a nightmare for parents five months out of the year. If you have a 2-year-old and want to blow off some steam, it’s hard to find a place you can go that’s inside and welcoming. For expats like Hasa who live far away from the helping hands of grandparents, you have to call the babysitter if you want to enjoy a cricket match at the pub, which can get expensive. That’s why the first thing you see when you descend the stairs to The Royal Down Under is a large kids corner, complete with a jungle gym for the little ones and ample space to park a pram. Parents can enjoy delicious food and drinks and watch a game while still keeping an eye on the offspring. “It’s a place for him, her and them,” McGlynn says. Aussies and Kiwis are also excited to have
Ashley McGlynn and Meagan Hasa an authentic pub that cooks up their hometown favorites, since Fat Boy’s, Prague’s only other Australian pub, closed several years ago. In addition to the staples you would expect to see on a bar menu, The Royal Down Under also has many dishes for children and offers a good variety of vegetarian and vegan options, from falafel to beer battered mushrooms and salads. Hasa and McGlynn describe Australian cuisine as a melting pot of the country’s colonial history, and their menu reflects that. An example is the Parmy Burger, which Australians took from the Italians’ chicken parmigiana, added German schnitzel and then put it in a burger, according to McGlynn. If looking to try a unique Australian dish, Hasa recommends the Kanga Sanga, a sandwich with peppers, sweet potato, tomato chutney and marinated kangaroo steak imported from the homeland. “Kangaroo can be quite gamey, like deer,” she says, but also points out that its very healthy, lean meat. “Show me a fat kangaroo!” McGlynn agrees. The Royal Down Under also sells many snacks made in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Some of the most popular items are Bundaberg ginger beer, which Hasa describes as the best
ginger beer in all her travels, Biltong, a dried, cured meat McGlynn says is superior to beef jerky, and TimTams, which both describe as the best biscuits you’ll ever taste. In addition, they serve several crowd-pleasing Australian wines and meat pies from The Pie Shop, also owned by McGlynn. While they plan to become more involved in the Vinohrady and expat communities, right now McGlynn and Hasa are focusing on smoothing out any kinks in their new business. One of their most memorable nights was during the cricket world cup and Wimbledon finals in July. Expats were on the edge of their seats as the England and New Zealand game tied, and then the Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer match also went to a tie-breaker. Hasa and McGlynn both remember the “absurd cheering” that erupted in the pub. “Everyone in the room knew that we’re never going to experience this again,” McGlynn says. “At least is was a tie. If it wasn’t, the English would’ve boycotted the bar!” Vinohradská 48, 120 00 Vinohrady, royaldownunder.com +420 603 839 349

Book of the Month:
Trainspotting By Irvine Welsh
LAZARSKÁ 1, PRAHA 1
Trainspotting is the novel that first launched Irvine Welsh's spectacular career―an authentic, unrelenting, and strangely exhilarating episodic group portrait of blasted lives. It accomplished for its own time and place what Hubert Selby, Jr.'s Last Exit to Brooklyn did for his. Rents, Sick Boy, Mother Superior, Swanney, Spuds, and Seeker are as unforgettable a clutch of junkies, rude boys, and psychos as readers will ever encounter. Trainspotting was made into the 1996 cult film starring Ewan MacGregor and directed by Danny Boyle (Shallow Grave)..

Trash Hero
Not all heroes wear capes...some have bin bags
A group of environmentally conscious dogooders is helping save the world by picking up one piece of trash at a time. Starting as a one-time volunteer effort in Thailand in 2013, the organization has since expanded to having 12 chapters around the world that contribute to this effort. Trash Hero organizes weekly cleanups at their chapters, offering a chance for people to help clean up their community without signing up or paying a fee. While some may argue this does not largely impact the community, Trash Hero’s statistics have shown that they have cleaned up more than 11 million pieces of liter since the initiation of their organization. The most often asked and important question about these clean ups is the whereabouts of the trash that is picked up. The answer is: recycled or reused. In many of the countries where there is a recycling program, the volunteers will separate the trash and recycle the ones that can be. However, it does not mean they just leave the rest of the litter lying about. In collaboration with numerous organizations with the same ethical principles as them, such as Ecobricks and Tlejourn, the trash is remade into products that can be used to help the community and the larger cause. Ecobricks 34
packs plastic bottles with non-biological waste as reusable building blocks. This is an extremely efficient and clean method that has helped many communities, particularly since these materials cost little to nothing. However, picking up trash is certainly not all that they do. Well thought out and executed, Trash Hero has a plethora of programs that aim to raise awareness on the severity of trash in our communities. The organization understands it is not enough to simple clean the environment, but it is also crucial to educate people through workshops and lectures to better highlight the magnitude of our actions. There are several educational programs Trash Hero hosts to raise awareness, including Trash Hero kids, Community Waste Management, and Trash Heroes @Work. Picking up the trash is not anything you should be ashamed of. It is inspiring and very fulfilling activity, especially when you see all these enthusiastic volunteers around who just care about our nature, learn to say no to disposable bags and bottles etc." says Monika TrojanovĂĄ, spokesperson for Trash Hero. Raising awareness starts young, and Trash Hero has enacted the Trash Hero Kids program around the world to assist their cause. Kids will get points for not only joining cleanups

in their communities, but for using alternatives ot single use plastic bottles and bags, and even for simply refusing plastic straws. Trash Hero also distributes educational posters and videos, as well as presentations at schools about how Trash impacts sea life and the beaches. But why Prague? While we may not have beaches to pick up trash from, there is certainly enough plastic waste to go around. Under the guise of recycling, plastic waste remains a huge issue in Prague and people need to be aware of the environmental impact and how they can contribute to fixing this problem. While picking up a few pieces of trash can seem like an incremental improvement, with the combined effort of the community, Trash Hero has worked towards creating a real difference in our world with their initiatives and educational programs. Want to become a Trash Hero? It's a great way to meet people and help keep Prague beautiful. Find out more information by joining Trash Hero Praha on Facebook, or their website at trashhero.org.
