Wait, Kiefer Sutherland... like Jack Bauer from 24? Yep, one in the same. The Hollywood veteran and son of film great Donald Sutherland who has starred in great films like Young Guns, Stand By Me, Flatliners (and our favorite Relecutant President in Designated Survivor) also happens to also be a pretty damn good country musician as well. Sutherland's first album Down in a Hole (2016) won critical acclaim and he's currently touring in support of his new album Reckless and Me. Malá sportovní hala Areál Výstaviště
James Blunt Friday, March 6 We sort of feel bad for James Blunt... that whole "You're Beautiful" song was so big it exclipsed the other great stuff he's been doing. Blending together sensual, reverbslicked post-punk sensibilities with the kind of bubbly, rhythmically adventurous quirkiness that evoked acts like Orange Juice, Bloc Party, and Vampire Weekend, Bombay Bicycle Club have remained critics' darlings. PARENTING
The Montessori Room
Elis Design creates products to help promote your child 's development
The name Maria Montessori is well known to many parents and teachers. Her approach to child development has had a huge impact on global education. Among many accolades and accomplishments, the talented psychologist was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. Finding a link between a child’s motor skills and the development of speech and thought during childhood, today the Montessori method is synonymous with successful early childhood development. In her book The Absorbent Mind, Montessori stresses that the body and mind always go hand in hand. Exercise helps a child gain experience, learn body control and become more familiar with the outside world. And while most people probably associate Montessori with the classroom, the truth is, a child’s room is also a key development area, especially now that digital childhood is now a reality. With mobile devices and computers now an almost inescapable part of children’s daily lives, parents regularly encounter the difficulty involved of keeping their children entertained, often leaving their children alone with digital devices. Some studies have already revealed the negative
effects of a child’s early access to digital devices: visual impairment, movement problems, speech problems, social skills and negative emotional interference. And while Maria Montessori’s methodology certainly could never have considered the rise of digital devices, one thing is certain – active movement still equals development. In Montessori’s own words, “It is clear from observing the child that the development of his mind depends on physical activity.” A child’s bedroom is certainly one of the spaces a child will spend the most time alone. Making a Montessori bedroom means the room must be 100% child-centered. Everything in the room must be safe for the child to explore on their own, freely and independently, and everything must be in the child’s reach and at their level. With this in mind, Prague’s Elis Design has introduced the Montessori Room. The Elis team has thoughtfully organized everything through to the last detail and the result is a place where the child will have the opportunity to develop properly, surrounded by an everdeveloping educational environment.
The focal point is a baby’s cot with no legs, in the shape of a house, which is easy for a child to climb. The multi-function colorful Montessori swing improves the motor skills of your child’s whole body. Kids will practice coordinating movements by crossing obstacles with the Pickler Triangle. The Activity Board helps a child develop fine motor and thinking through six interactive modules including an unsurpassed hiding place. Through an innovative system of locks, they learn to close inside and get out again. And like all Elis Design products, the team focuses on quality which has earned them the reputation as a reliable supplier of high quality products, meeting world standards of safety and quality.

THE ARTS
Paint it Black An afternoon with provative artist David Černý David Černý, the iconic Czech artist and provocateur, is used to running late, says the manager at his Prague art center and studio known as MeetFactory. More often than not, his reputation precedes him. At age 23, a young Černý was arrested after painting a Soviet tank war memorial in Prague bright pink. He’s since shocked the art world with his bizarre, politically-charged installations, from a bronze sculpture of two men peeing into an enclosure shaped like the Czech Republic to an enormous middle finger he once floated down the Vltava river. Now at 53, Černý is only slightly less intimidating than his work suggests. The man who finally arrives for our interview at MeetFactory bears a disheveled mop of jet-black hair to match his all-black attire, resembling more of a rock star than artist. “I’ve done too many interviews in my life,” he begins, rubbing his face with his hands. “They usually never ask anything new.” By contrast, Černý’s life seems constantly in flux. He’s been in and out of the studio all week, where he’s just installed a new robotic tool for his sculpture work. Soon, he has to run to meet a transport dropping off equipment for a band playing at MeetFactory tonight. Černý founded the Factory in 2001 as a nonfor-profit theatre, concert venue, art studio and residency program. It’s just another one of his seemingly endless landmarks in the city, which number 14 at the moment, to be exact. Needless to say, Černý’s reputation for breaking the status quo is as strong as ever. Alongside architect Tomáš Císař, Černý launched Black N’ Arch, an architectural firm which combines Černý’s sometimes outlandish ideas with a practical sense

of execution. The first project, CyberDog Café – bills itself as a technology information centre with a wine bar which features robotically operated service. And prior to that, Černý built “Trifot”, a towering, googlyeyed robot nearby CyberDog outside the Czech Photo Center—though he insists the structure isn’t a robot, but an embodiment of Big Brother. “You have to be the part, and you have to obey the rules, and I never did it,” Černý says, pushing a half-empty Club-Mate across a cafe table inside the Factory. “I was more or less having fun. And that’s unforgivable.” Still, Černý’s shocking works have made him one of the only contemporary Czech artists to catch international attention. In the ‘90s, he completed residencies in New York City at the Museum of Modern Art’s PS1 and the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. He’s a laureate of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, one of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious awards for young visual artists. He’s had solo exhibitions in galleries from Budapest to Rome, London, and Berlin, and next year, he’ll have an exhibition at Prague’s National Gallery. In the U.S., he’s sometimes referred to as the
“Czech Banksy,” recalling the anonymous graffiti artist, though Černý would be likely to correct the misnomer. Černý’s work came first. Petr Šec, an art collector and co-founder of Dvorak Sec Contemporary gallery, has been following the artist’s career since his pink tank prank in the ‘90s. Šec thinks that what sets Černý apart isn’t just his controversial style and skillful artistry, but also his ability to record history with his art. “There is no one like Černý,” continues Šec. “He has an ability and courage to come up with ideas which reflect the political and social shifts in society.” But you can’t court controversy as relentlessly as Černý without earning a few enemies along the way. His sarcastic take on country stereotypes “Entropa” sparked a diplomatic spat that reached across the globe in 2009. And Černý is a known rival of former National Gallery Director Milan Knizak, from whom he refused to accept a museum award in 2000. “Černý is a controversial personality,” Šec adds. “If you are not ready for that, he might be able to hurt you, [but] he is a great artist.” Working with Černý is a similar story.

Michal Brenner, who has been the music program manager at MeetFactory since 2010, says it’s the “best job” he’s ever had. And even though he occasionally quarrels with Černý over aesthetics, Brenner says the artist truly respects those with whom he works. “[Černý] is crazy, which is a good thing,” Brenner says outside the Factory’s concert hall. “But I think he has a respect for what I do, and he doesn’t interfere.” Černý has mentioned that much of his work stems from anger, built up from his childhood under communism and the deep reaction he had— even as a kid—against it. “You realize that in the moment when the teacher is pushing you to know something and say
something which is not true,” Černý says. “As a child, you know that there is something wrong when your parents are telling you, what you hear at home, you should not repeat at school.” Never one to follow rules, Černý remembers muttering an insult about Vladimir Lenin in kindergarten. Immediately, the school called Černý’s parents: “If he were to be heard by somebody else,” a teacher warned, “he might get into trouble.” It was the first time a young Černý faced backlash for his beliefs, but it certainly wouldn’t be the last. In elementary school, he was scolded for wearing American flags on his shoes; in high school, he spent his share of nights in prison for attending anti-Communist demonstrations. “It was quickly explained that I should not say certain things,” Černý adds. But Černý maintains that he doesn’t really care what others think of his work. In fact, he feels somewhat separate from the Prague art scene, proper. “I’m part of the ‘Prague art scene’ just because I live here. Otherwise, the Prague art scene hates me,” Černý says, laughing. “I don’t even think that if you hit on the Prague scene and say my name, that they will say they know me.” Part of this detachment stems from Černý’s refusal to, as he puts it, “play the part” of an artist by attending gallery openings or giving interviews. Growing up as the son of two artists—his mother a restorer; his father a graphic designer—Černý says he was “dragged” to these events, and developed a distaste for them early on. Now, the artist insists that if anything, his art has only become darker over time: “I am more
Černý 's design for a skybridge linking two buildings in Prague 9 is based on the 1895 Montparnasse derailment in Paris. Černý says the project should be completed within two years.

depressive, and negative, and nihilistic than I was before,” he says, though his words come with a sly smile. Still, Černý’s name is also attached to a number of apolitical works that are known more for their pure aesthetic beauty than anything else. Take his 42-layer rotating sculpture of Franz Kafka’s head, a marvel which sits in the middle of the busy Quadrio shopping center near Národní třída. And despite his rebellious reputation, Černý can be warm and irresistibly charming. When relaxed, he has a hearty, raspy laugh that fills the room, and a buzzing energy that prompts him to spontaneously swing on ceiling rails or jump up stairs. He’d never bring up his love of flying planes and helicopter or his person aircraft, but his eyes light up when anyone inquires who it belongs to. And when his phone rings midway through our interview, I recognize the opening riffs of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” in his tone. It’s a softer side of the artist that emerges especially when talking about his school years at the University of Applied Arts in Prague, like when he managed to snag a key to the school and would sneak in after hours of partying on the streets. “The party was basically ongoing, endless,” Černý recalls with a laugh. “I don’t understand why my kidneys actually survived.” But when asked about the future, Černý, for once, is silent. “That’s a question I’m giving myself,” he admits after a few moments. “If you’re 20, 22 [years old], you don’t see the horizon. The horizon is some-fucking-where, it’s far away, it’s endless,” he continues. “But in certain moments you see that there has to be some end.” Černý would like to have children, or as he puts it, “to replicate.” And if he grows tired of making art, his back-up plan is to become a pilot—in fact, he’s already through the flight training required. But as the artist admits, he doesn’t exactly have a plan. It’s a work in progress. March 2020 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

HISTORY
Blackmarket Bony and Levis How Tuzex brought goods from the West to Communist Prague It’s Prague in 1986. Levi’s button fly 501 jeans are all the rage and a must-have, even in Communist Prague. But there was no Levis store, or really any Western retailers for that matter. Of course there's no Amazon, Alza or other internet retailers. In fact, possession of foreign currency in Czechoslovakia was officially illegal. In fact, every citizen who had any foreign currency had 15 days to surrender the Czechoslovak State Bank in exchange for crown. So, how would you get your acid-washed button fly jeans? That’s where Tuzex came in. Started in 1957, state-ran Tuzex began as a network of retailers across Czechoslovakia offering groceries, but they expanded quickly to a wider market from there. With Tuzex, you had to use foreign currency (or gold) to buy “Tuzex vouchers” (known as "Bony” ), which were in Czechoslovakian crowns denominations. Vouchers could be redeemed in Tuzex stores for retail items. By 1988, at the peak of Tuzex, there were 170 stores across Czechoslovakia, offering up items ranging from clothing to cosmetics and food to cars and other long-service products (especially
electronics). In addition to the predominantly Western goods from non-socialist countries consisted of approximately one third of the range of export programs Czechoslovak producers. Goods in Tuzex were generally regarded as luxury or more exclusive quality than products that were available in conventional stores. In particular demand were big ticket items like cars, washing machines, radios, tape recorders and other electronics otherwise unavailable. Many of the brands carried by Tuzex were exclusively licensed and couldn’t be found anywhere else. Several products and brands available in Tuzex are forever inscribed into Czech history. Blue jeans made their first appearance in Czechoslovakia thanks to Tuzex and were one of the most soughtafter type of clothing that were available amongst the youth. Brand names like Wildcat, HIS, Levis Mustang and others flew off the Tuzex shelves in 1968. From a control standpoint, Tuzex was also an important tool for Communist Czechoslovakia to evacuate foreign currency and gold from the population. Since Tuzex was state-owned and Czechoslovakia had extremely high import duties, The Tuzex market discouraged people from finding ways to import products from abroad and motivate them to exchange foreign currencies for coupons. In the early years, Tuzex vouchers were only valid for 3 months. During the 1980 ‘s the period of validity extended to one year. The expiration meant it was a parallel currency with a lifespan, which
opened up it up to black-market sales. Outside most of the “official” places for the exchange of vouchers for foreign currency (or gold) you’d usually find droves of black-market voucher sellers, or “vekslaci” , casually asking passerby’s if they wanted vouchers in exchange for Czech crowns (as opposed to gold or foreign currency). And while it was technically illegal, it was a normally tolerated activity. Interestingly, vouchers weren’t the only pioneering currency Tuzex made. They also issued the first payment card in the history of Czechoslovakia. In 1988, Živnostenská bank began to issue the Tuzex card , which made it possible to make cashless payments at branches Tuzex. At the time just before of the Velvet Revolution, Tuzex had a annual turnover of over $250 million USD. In 1988, they sold tens of thousands of TVs, VCRs, and over 10,000 personal computers. But, following the Velvet Revolution, the easy access to Westernized goods meant that Tuzex no longer had a captive market – and sales plummeted immediately. Floundering in an open market,, Tuzex was selling goods directly for Czech Crowns when they stopped selling vouchers completely on June 30, 1992. With a strong brand name, Tuzex made several attempts to re-define themselves, even as a travel product before falling into liquidation in 1998 with an on the books loss of 120 million crown. ARTS & CULTURE
National Ballet premieres revival of Onegin Eugene Onegin, a novel in verse written by the Russian Romantic author Alexander Sergeyevich Pushin, ranks among the best-known and most popular titles of global literature. The story of Onegin, a smug, selfish and world-weary Saint Petersburg dandy, and the shy country girl Tatiana, and their ill-fated love. South African Ballet Dancer John Cranko first discovered Alexander Pushkin’s verse-novel Eugene Onegin when he choreographed the dances for Tchaikovsky’s opera of the same name in 1952. He first proposed a ballet based on Pushkin’s story to the Royal Opera House board in the 1960s, but it was turned down, and he pursued the idea when he moved to Stuttgart. The Stuttgart Ballet premiered the work in 1965. The Royal Ballet did not present the work until 2001. The choreography for his ballet includes a wide range of styles, including folk, modern, ballroom and acrobatic. Besides Cranko’s enthralling choreography, the ballet’s success has been contributed to by Kurt-Heinz Stolze, who created the music. The score contains lesser-known Tchaikovsky pieces,
without including a single note from the opera Eugene Onegin. Cranko and Stolze mainly worked with piano cycles and the symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini. The result is truly amazing. The revived Czech production of Cranko’s ballet will be accompanied by a live performance of the National Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Václav Zahradník, who has explored the score. Stolze used selections from five solo piano opuses (from The Seasons, Op. 37a, Op. 19, and Op. 72), selections from the opera Cherevichki, Op. 9 (as a main musical theme for Tatiana and Onegin), the symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32, the symphonic ballad The Voyevoda, Op. 3, a duet from the incomplete opera Romeo and Juliet, and Impromptu from Two Piano Pieces, Op. 1. Between 1965 and 1967 Cranko revised Onegin several times. His scenario originally ended with Tatiana kissing her children goodnight, which he decided lessened the drama of her final encounter with Onegin. Cranko also deleted the prologue, in which Onegin was seen at his uncle’s deathbed. The standard version of the ballet
was first performed by the Stuttgart company in October 1967. The Czech National Ballet had the title in its repertoire between 2005 and 2012, with the company’s most distinguished soloists featured in the lead roles – Tereza Podařilová (whose portrayal of Tatiana earned her the Thalia Prize 2005) and Jiří Kodym (who received the Thalia Prize 2005 for his rendition of Onegin). Worthy of mention is the fact that they now work as ballet masters at the Czech National Ballet and participate in the current Onegin revival. The production visually evokes the atmosphere of Pushkin’s novel in verse, with the romantic impression being enhanced by the wonderful costumes designed by Elisabeth Dalton. John Cranko’s Onegin, deemed a treasure of the international ballet legacy, has been a staple of the repertoire of the major theatres worldwide. The Czech revival will receive its premiere at the National Theatre in Prague on 20 February 2020. March 2020 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

DINING
From Cocina to Kuchyň...
Award-Winning Mexican Chef Fernando Hernandez Ruiz joins Gallery 44 for three month residency
For Gallery 44 in Old Town, artistic expression at the dining table is just as important as the art that adorns the walls of the restaurant. Here, guests can enjoy culinary delights while taking in pieces from the famous DSC art gallery, whose roster of artists includes David Černý, Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Pasta Oner, Jakub Matuška aka Masker and Milan Houser, among others. The owner describes it as dinner literally in an art gallery,. The space’s history prior to its life as a restaurant served as the restaurant’s inspiration. Among the previous owners is Karl Calvi, who was the first to use the building as an art gallery in the late 1600s for his own private collection, which the restaurant is still known for today. The owner of Gallery 44 said they wanted to create something more than a restaurant. A venue to be remembered for more than just beautiful cuisine. Creativity extends from the
gallery walls into the kitchen. Like Medithe rotating art pieces, Gallery 44 also alternates new VIP guest chefs each quarter who serve up dishes inspired by their local region as well as sometimes giving their take on Czech classics. During their threemonth tenure, these masters craft an à la carte menu, as well as a tasting menu with wine pairing. This month, Chef Fernando Hernandez Ruiz takes the helm at Gallery 44, as a guest chef from his critically acclaimed restaurant Moyuelo in Puebla, Mexico. The 34 year old Mexican chef decided early on that he wanted to be in the kitchen. Ruiz tried a conventional education at the Culinary Institute (ICUM), but he left in 2005 in search of more practical knowledge. With a plan to work and gain experience in some of the world’s best restaurants, Ruiz landed in Spain working for Lasarta Berasategui Group. In 2008, Ruiz began working at the group’s Mugaritz restaurant,
which he says changed his life. “It’s where I learned that you can cook very differently, and that's where the first ambition of having my own business was born,” Ruiz says. He also says Mugaritz was where he crafted the insight to use quality ingredients and combine the uniqueness of the flavors. Ruiz then went to the US, where he works for the Hyatt Group. Like many famous chefs, Ruiz uses his hotel restaurant time to gather experience in his field, but also to travel, photograph and write, which has become a great hobby for him. But being a world traveler soon gave way to missing home, and he returned to Puebla to open Moyuelo in 2014. The restaurant was instantly notable, gaining praise from the likes of Forbes magazine, and propelling Ruiz into the spotlight. In fact, Moyuelo was awarded as a restaurant with the “greatest future” and is consistently at the top of travel guides as a “must visit”. Even though Ruiz has seen a lot of
the world, he said he is enjoying his time in the city and enjoying working with the team at Gallery 44 on such a unique project. Art and food aside, the space itself is stunning. Its subterranean entrance with Romanesque features leads past an open kitchen and into the dining area. The building, one of Prague’s oldest, showcases 800 years of Czech history, complete with beautiful finishes, heavy tables and chairs, and a playful use of light. The restaurant is literally a hidden treasure in plain sight, resting under one of Prague’s busiest tourist paths. Located at Karlova 44, Gallery 44 is below the popular Fat Cat Pub and Brewery, where locals and tourists alike go for locally brewed craft beer. Unlike its upstairs neighbor, Gallery 44 is not a restaurant for crowds. It only allows seating for 44 people, offering an intimate experience with close attention to detail.

Most of our Vinohrady and Zizkov tell us the only thing wrong with Artic Bakehouse has been they're on the wrong side of the river (the original location is at Ujezd 11). Amazing Icelandic breads, sandwiches and our favorite - the cinnamon rolls. They're also on Wolt, which makes them a perfect morning after a long night treat.
You only live once - and if you're eating a this new healthy bistro, it may be for a while. Creative chef Oliver Pape is focused on the ingredients with the best quality products from North Moravia such as selected coffee from the roaster Jesen or beers from the microbrewery Zlosin. Sort of funny hours the close at 5 Monday though Wednesday - so take note.

Sanduga
We've been hearing about Chile y Limon for almost a year - and now it's finaly open. The Smichov Mexican Kitchen offers up a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, like burritos, tacos and quesadillas. But, the big hit in our office have been the Mexican Bowls - a bowl filled with rice, meat or grilled vegetables, pico de gallo, guacamole, sauces and pick corn, spinach, beets, jalapenos or any other seasonal ingredients. Best of all, these guys are wll priced - pretty much everything is under 140kc.
Another new Karlin addition. Modern international cuisine and modern sushi, Sunduga prides itself in the quality of its ingredients and healthy preparation methods. The restaurant has adopted a partially open kitchen concept, where a sushi chef prepares modern sushi and grilled dishes directly in front of you.
