Happy February! There's a lot happening this month in Prague. We've tried to pack in as much as possible into our February issue. This month, we interview Jiří Burian. The talented fourth-generation musician, producer and writer is also the man behind Kapitán Demo. And while Burian is pretty much an all-around nice guy with a lovely wife and family who is creating his own music and producing music for the likes of Emma Smetana, his alter-ego is unhinged, loud and over the top. Luckily, we spent a few hours with Jiří, and not the Kapitán, but it's a great interview worth reading. Also this month we take a trip back in time with Czech Cabaret. Performed weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the stunning Royal Theatre, the new variety show will make you feel like you're spending a cheeky evening in a scene from The Great Gatsby. Prague also gets its first Comic-Con, and it's full of some big-name actors and comic creators. Ron Perlman from Hell Boy , Brandon Routh from Superman and The Flash, and Casper Van Dien from Starship Troopers are all

making an appearance, plus Danny-John Rules from Red Dwarf among others. We've been to Comic-Con in other cities – and we think it's worth it just to see the Cosplayers who are sure to attend. Don't forget it's also Masopust this month. For those uninitiated, that translates to "Meat Feast," and as you can probably imagine - the food portion of the festivities involves a lot of pork. Be sure and follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and check our website, www.pragueresident.com, where each week we bring you The Big List, which expands on the events you see in this magazine even more. We also feature up to date news articles and information from CTK as well as other great content., plus giveaways. As always, if you'd like to receive our magazine at your offices and your company employees 20 or more expat employees, just email us distribution@ praguevisitor.eu. We'll see you next month!

Hot 8 Brass Band Thursday, February 13, 21:00 The Grammy-nominated New Orleans brass band is bringing a Lousianna style Mardis Gras to Europe on their latest tour. We've seen a H8BB show in the US and can't say enough. They've been accurately described as "A dominant force on New Orleans streets—the band you want to dance behind during a Sunday second-line parade," by writer Larry Blumenfeld. Even if you're not typically an instrumental music fan, this show is still a crowd pleaser. MeetFactory Ke Sklárně 15

Onegin February 20th, 19:00 (Premiere) Onegin is one of John Cranko’s top-notch creations. Based on A. S. Pushkin’s well-known novel in verse, the ballet follows the story of a world-weary Russian aristocrat, who spurns the love of the young, earnest Tatyana, giving preference instead to flirting with her sister. A few years later, Onegin changes his mind and becomes obsessed with winning Tatyana’s affection, yet it is too late. Cranko’s feted ballet requires from the dancers expressive acting, brilliant technique and a profound sense for the rendition of the characters’ emotions. PROFILE THE
INVENTION OF
KAPITÁN DEMO MUSICIAN & PRODUCER JIŘÍ BURIAN, THE MAN POWER BEHIND THE LARGER THAN LIFE CHARACTER Jiří Burian was born to be a musician. The son of pianist and TV presenter Jan Burian, grandson of composer and theater director Emil František Burian, and great-nephew of worldrenowned opera singer Karl Burian, Jiří never really considered anything else. He was writing music by age 8 and he played drums with his father and brother before starting his first band, Southpaw, as a teenager. “I was always meant to do this,” Burian said. “Music was more important than history or geography or science; music was my everything as I was growing up.” The connection to Burian’s musical history is present in the myriad music he composes and produces out of his Prague studio, Alpha Studios. Next to the computer, drum machine and guitars is a 100-year-old old Förster piano that once belonged to his grandfather Emil. “The piano’s got a lot of spirit in it,” Burian said. “I still use it in my studio every day when I compose. When the melody comes to my head, I play it on the piano first and then I record it.” That includes the music for Kapitán Demo, an outrageous Czech rapper that has brought Burian, 41, the success he struggled to find with his indie projects. Growing up idolizing The Smiths – Alma Matters, a phrase that’s also tattooed on his right forearm, is a 1997 single by Morrissey – Burian spent his early career making alternative music. Through his 20s and 30s, that usually wasn’t enough to pay the bills, so he had a series of odd jobs, including selling fossils by Prague Castle, teaching English to kids and bartending. “I’m probably still fast behind the bar,” Burian jokes. Those days are now behind him. Partly inspired by comedian Andy Kaufman, Burian created an over-the-top alter ego who jokes about the things and people that he thinks deserve to be mocked. Kapitán Demo’s fourth album, released in 2018, included the single, “Zlatíčka”, which translates to sweetheart and samples the 1979 hit “I’m in the Mood for Dancing”. The music video has nearly eight million views on YouTube and Kapitán Demo now
has nearly 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. The melody for “Zlatíčka” is light and bouncy while the lyrics say that everyone deserves love, even the ex-secret police and murderers who turned themselves into celebrities. Through the character, Burian can say and do pretty much anything he wants these days. “Every time I put the costume on, my personality changes,” Burian said. “And when I take it off, I’m back.” The musical family history won’t stop with Jiří, either. His wife and manager, Darina Burianová, directed two of his most successful music videos – “Zlatíčka” and “Man Power” – and his sons Adam, 8, and Alvin, 4, will appear on multiple tracks of an upcoming Demo album for kids, “Tell Your Mom to Buy You a Bentley”.
other project or some other song, maybe for myself or for Demo. If I do something that’s really, really so good I just can’t give it to somebody else, I just keep it (laughs). Being an asshole isn’t bad.
We sat down with Burian to discuss his career and the character he created:
PR: How did the 1999 movie “Man on the Moon” influence you?
PR: You have a lot of different projects, including solo work, Demo and your bands Southpaw and Republic of Two. What are you focusing on these days?
JB: That was really something that was life-changing for me. I like director Miloš Forman, of course, and Jim Carrey. Andy Kaufman was a huge thing for me, because I felt like there was somebody like my blood in a way, somebody who showed me the way that we can change things. We can make things in a different way. And the alter ego thing, with Tony Clifton and Andy Kaufman, I really wanted to do something that would be in a way similar but different, which is Demo.
JB: My priority at this time is Demo, because it’s really like a factory now. There are so many people involved and it’s making a really big impact so I have to keep it No. 1. But still, it’s the most difficult thing for me to do, to write for Demo, because to write something that’s funny and not stupid at the same time, and still upto-date is very hard for me. It’s the hardest thing. PR: You also produce and compose for musicians like Emma Smetana, Jordan Haj and Givi Kross. Do you keep regular hours in the studio? JB: I have to. Because there are so many things that I’m working on so I have to fit everyone in. I’m basically something like a dentist because I have a tight time schedule. During the week I’m in my studio, also doing meetings and interviews or stuff like that. And on the weekends I have gigs, mostly with Demo. Sometimes I also just have to let go and make music for myself, not knowing where it’s going to go. When I’m composing for someone else I have to connect with him somehow and just try to write as if I was him or her. But sometimes it leads me to some
PR: How do you talk about Demo? I approach it as an actor talking about a character. It’s the same thing. If I was sitting here as Demo, that would be different, of course. That would be the character speaking. It’s just fun. It’s just the power, which is fun. Playing the almighty and the powerful. You really can do anything that you want and people just go for it, which is nice therapy (laughs). Some people really think that Demo is real, and some people don’t even recognize me. I’ve had to fight with people to convince them I’m Demo.
PR: Are you surprised that, of all your projects, it was Demo that really broke through? JB: Three years ago it started getting really big, in this country I mean. Yeah, I thought OK, that might work. At the same time I think it’s the irony of fate or something, because for myself I always find different projects much more important and valuable in an artistic way than Demo. For me, Demo is just for fun. But after some time I realized the importance of it. It’s not only the humor, it’s also changing the rules of society and of show business, and that’s important so I dealt with it and I accepted it.

PR: Who is Demo’s music meant for? JB: The target group is ages 4 to 74; it’s really different. And the people are open-minded and they trust me so much. I think people just want to have fun and feel the freedom in themselves, and that’s why they love Demo so much. He has the power to do anything he wants, and they want that power too. They want to feel like they can be playful again even if they’re 40 and work at an office job. They can do things in a different way, and that’s why I think Demo is so successful apart from the songs and the humor itself. PR: Part of Demo’s appeal is the look: gold chains, colorful oversized clothes, sneering confidence. How did you come up with his style? JB: We just wanted to do everything properly, like a package. We love the image, we love fashion and all kinds of stuff that comes together for a good product. We like to change it all the time and find new ways and new ideas, like the Ikea bag costume (for the “Trendsetter” music video). It’s all about connecting with the right people. The good artist is the one who surrounds himself with great people. That’s the hardest part, because the people make it, the team. It’s very interesting for us to see how it can develop and the way fashion can go. We were also thinking about making Kapitán slim, but I didn’t want it. It would lose the majestic feeling. PR: Demo’s look has changed a bit over the years. How did it go from the inflatable Sumo suit to what you have now? JB: Two years ago we came up with this special thing, which is a different kind of costume that people use in films. It’s a special fabric that holds the shape, and it’s really comfortable actually. It’s great, because you have air in it so you don’t feel warm and sweaty. You have a lot of space in it. It’s comfy. You can move really fast, which people in the fat suit can’t, and it’s light. Sometimes it was better before because the cold air was still blowing, so when we were performing in really hot weather it was comfortable. It was air conditioning. Now, when we had the Forum Karlin show, we had a huge oversized gold jacket, and that was hardcore because it was so fucking heavy. It was so hard for me to do it. But, it looked so nice that I didn’t have a choice. JB: You played Forum Karlin in December. Is the goal to keep moving to bigger and bigger venues? It’s step-by-step. But that’s the classic thing, that’s what everybody does. We want to do different things. For example, we’re working on a concept now with an orchestra show, but at times the orchestra might be out of tune and strange things might happen during the show, like people killing each other. It would be this huge concept like a comedy show with an orchestra. We’re also thinking about releasing the best hits but with opera singers.
Kapitán Demo plays a sold out show at Forum Karlin PR: Some of the songs that have done the best are about everyday annoyances, like semis slowly passing each other on the highway or someone parking over two spaces. Why do you think those have struck a chord with the audience? JB: If something is really bugging you, it gets under your skin so much that you make a song out of it, and suddenly you remove the problem, you remove the negativity of it. Because the next time you’re in the situation you think of the song and you laugh at it. When you see two trucks, it was always a pain in the ass before. And now you see it you think of the song and you laugh. Or someone’s parking like an idiot, and it’s kind of cool because of the song (Macho Parking). Those things are great. You can remove the negativity of the problems and make it a positive thing, which is a great thing. That’s what’s really driving me on, because it’s something I couldn’t do with an indie, melancholic band. It wouldn’t be that powerful, so that’s why I like it so much. PR: Demo is a party character – during a show at Roxy you had hostesses walking around with fake lines of coke on a gold platter – but you perform him sober. How has meditation changed your creative process? JB: We grew up on drugs, actually. All of us. I’m from the generation where we, it was the 90s, and in our youth we started to discover all of those things like ecstasy, weed, LSD, coke and everything. We grew up in that scene and it was very hard for us to stay sober. It was hard for me, but I was lucky because I never got addicted to anything. I was lucky to have my stepfather who pushed me into sports a lot, so I always stayed healthy and strong and did sports. Then, when I stopped smoking weed, because I used to create on weed a lot – so many albums on weed – so when I stopped I started looking for something else, something that doesn’t destroy your psychology and your body that much. Which, of course, was meditation or endorphins from training. It’s the only way. Meditation saved my life, actually, and still it’s in my life and it’s changing. I used to do a lot of zen, qigong meditation, and then it changed to transcendental
meditation, which is the thing I’m doing now. I’m not saying I’m holy; sometimes I get filthy in a club. But it has to be balanced all the time. I’m interested in different ways now; I’m looking for different challenges in my life so I could feel the same vibe that drugs give us. PR: Most people wouldn’t think of Demo as an artist for kids, and yet there’s an appeal there that has led you to making a kids› album. How different will that be from other Demo records? JB: We don’t want to sound like preachers and shit; we don’t want to change our characters. So it has to be a little bit naughty, it has to be funny, it has to be shocking in a way and it has to be stylish. That’s what we were thinking about, and the sound has changed a lot. It’s not trap anymore, it’s more like dance music. The concept of the album is for everybody who still thinks he’s a kid inside. It might be kids, it might be grown-ups; it’s for everybody, basically. There are no rude words in it, but it’s still pretty hardcore. It’s about divorce, it’s about money, it’s about what your parents do when you’re not at home, it’s about fighting or peeing outside and other things that the kids are told they’re not allowed to do, but we say is normal. It will be very interesting to watch what happens, because kids are sacred to people, and if you attack their kids with this open-minded approach that we have, it might be very interesting all the reactions we get. PR: Other than the kids album, what does the future look like for you and for Demo? JB: I’m really looking forward to getting Demo as big as he can be and to make a difference. We’ll make some changes, have some fun but also I feel a little bit of pressure to write another hit like “Zlatíčka”, because that’s the song that changed my career. It’s very hard to think, Oh I have to go and sit down and make another hit. I don’t want to think that way, but hopefully I can manage to do that and then carry on with different projects and make some great albums. I know there are some great albums coming from my kitchen from my friends.

ARTS & CULTURE
CZECH CABARET The new variety show at Royal Theatre features stunning acts, amazing costumes and great dance numbers. By Nicole Ely Stepping into the Royal Theatre on a Saturday night is like time traveling back to the First Republic. Lively jazz music plays in the background as you are greeted by vaudevillian performers. A mime escorts you to your seat. Those around you are laughing and sipping sparkling wine from ice buckets. Before long, the lights dim and women outfitted in shimmering rhinestones and feathered headdresses dance onto the stage. The new variety show “Czech Cabaret” is a production meant for those looking for a fun and unique live theatre experience. Inspired by old shows of the 1920s and 30s, the musical revue features daring knife throwers, stunning acrobatics and talented aerialists that swing almost too close to the audience. Taking songs from well-known musicals like “Chicago,” “Moulin Rouge” and (of course)
“Cabaret,” the show is the work of three Czech women who do the work of an entire production team, Director Nikol Prokešová, her sister and lead performer Felicita Victorie Prokešová and Producer Šárka Šedivá. As director, Nikol is the stage mom of the company. Whether she’s making sure the dancers are on queue or helping find lost socks backstage, she looks after the company as her family. Born in a small Czech village, Nikol and Felicita grew up loving the arts and live performance. Nikol left for Prague to study acting, and Felicita followed once she was old enough. The sisters’ support for each other runs deep. At Felicita’s very first professional audition four years ago, Nikol was there cheering her on. “She was my role model and inspiration,” Felicita says. Both sisters had landed several roles before starting “Czech Cabaret.” Nikol starred as Frida Kahlo in a one woman show and also briefly
worked for Prima Televize, but nothing compared to live performance. “It’s the atmosphere, the people, the energy,” she says. “Theater is the only one for me.” The idea for the show first came to Nikol after she experienced an underground cabaret in New York. It was unlike anything she had seen before. “There were actresses, dancers, artistic performers,” Nikol says. “I loved it and knew I must have something like it.” Nikol had her vision. She just needed a crew. She found the perfect partner in Šárka Šedivá, the show’s producer who lends a hand with everything from auditioning the right performers, finding the right venue and getting a budget for the beautiful handmade costumes. Not long after Šedivá joined the team, Felicita came on as the choreographer and lead singer in the show. Now, Nikol had her dream team. “If you want to work on a big show, you must have people who February 2020 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

are on the same wavelength,” she says. For the sisters, working together has been wonderful and devoid of the common sibling rivalry some might expect from a pair of theatrical relatives. “I just see my sister and I know exactly what she needs,” Felicita says. In addition to directing the show, Nikol also designed and made all the costumes, which are showstoppers in themselves. The bejeweled pieces evoke Jean Paul Gaultier (whom Nikol jokingly considers a member of her creative family) mixed with Las Vegas showgirl. While they’re stunning, they’re also practical, designed specifically for speedy costume changes. Choosing a favorite costume is like choosing a favorite child. “Every costume is special. I love them all,” Felicita says. “I feel like a star in these costumes.” With the cast coming together and the costumes under way, the next thing was to find the right theatre. Then they found the Royal Theatre at Vinohradská 48. The Royal Theatre is the perfect symbol of show business in the First Republic era from 1918–1938, which is also a perfect fit for the show’s vibe. It was originally opened as a cinema in 1929, and has a large stage, cocktail lounge seating, a balcony and a full bar in the back. After the Velvet Revolution and the rise of Cinema City and other movie multiplexes, the theatre basically
went dormant until Jean-Christophe Gramont decided to restore it to its former glory. “I think Gramont was looking for someone to bring it alive again,” Šedivá says.
Once the women saw the Royal, they knew it was perfect. An old theater can also come with a few mishaps. The women recall one of their first performances where the lights went out and the emergency fire alarm came on during the “All that Jazz” number. Luckily they were able to fix the problem quickly. Afterall, the show must go on. “At the end of the show that, most of the audience told me they loved the show so much they didn’t even remember the problem,” Felicita says. When looking at her work with “Czech Cabaret” and her sister, Felicita regards it as the best experience of her career. She knows that might sound dramatic considering she’s only in her early 20s, but the love and community she feels getting to work with Nikol is unique. Šedivá notices this as well. She notes that Nikol and Felicita are about 10 years apart in age, and while they did have a good relationship before working together, the show has brought them so much closer. “It’s been wonderful seeing them find each other again,” she says. Just walking into the Royal, you get a sense of the love that is invested in the show. It is unlike others in Prague. The performers interact with the audience and the setting creates a vintage and intimate ambience. Nikol hopes the audience will feel involved, and even dance in their seats to the upbeat numbers, something she says many Czechs might feel embarrassed about at first. “We want to break that barrier between the performers and the audience,” she says. “Afterall, it’s really our show together.” February 2020 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

PRAGUE PIG
Pork or Pervatin?
A drug-dealing butcher, a confused kingfisher and a child with no name are some of the strange Czech news stories in this month’s roundup By Samuel Beckwith, PraguePig.com City life is full of surprises, and even the most ordinary scene can conceal an unexpected secret. For instance, employees and customers of the butcher’s shop on Biskupská street, Prague 1-Nové Město, weren’t expecting to be greeted by a crew from Nova’s Televizní noviny news show on January 15. And were probably even more surprised to learn that their favorite butcher was closed because the premises were being used to produce and distribute methamphetamine. According to cops, chemicals, and equipment sufficient for producing individual batches of more than 20 grams of the drug, had been found on the premises. A 30-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman have been charged, and officials from the state veterinary administration (SVF) were called in to destroy meat contaminated by chemicals.
Low-flying bird
For a pedestrian in Plzeň, walking along the west Bohemian city’s river embankment, there was a more pleasant surprise -- a kingfisher, stunned but still alive, lying in the street. “It was obvious that something wasn’t right and that it needed my help,” the unnamed passer-by told the Právo newspaper. “It was on its back, orange feet up, and its head was twitching.” The colorful bird was handed over to Karel Makoň of the local animal-rescue service, by which time it was already standing up and “shaking its head happily.” According to Makoň, the kingfisher had probably followed the Radbuza river into the city then accidentally flown into a shop window, knocking itself out. Because Plzeň is at the confluence of four rivers, such incidents are surprisingly common, he added, because birds use rivers to navigate. Makoň planned to release the kingfisher back into the wild when it had made a full recovery.
Give me back my name
Given names were in the news last month, with two stories highlighting the Czech Republic’s relatively strict regulations on naming your child. On January 10, local newspaper Klatovský deník published an interview with Eliška Gaja Fuxová. Now 18, Eliška became a cause célèbre as a baby after her parents -- followers of an “alternative” back-tonature lifestyle -- tried to name her “Půlnoční bouře” (“Midnight Storm”), after the weather conditions at
the time of her birth. Under Czech law, given names must be preapproved by the authorities, which, in practice, either means using one of the names listed in Czech linguist Miloslava Knappová’s book Jak se bude vaše dítě jmenovat? (“How Will You Name Your Child?”) or a foreign name that’s in use somewhere in the world. Since “Pulnoční bouře” didn’t meet either of those criteria, the parents were ordered to pick a new name. This was one of a series of disputes between the authorities and the baby’s parents, who refused to register her birth, didn’t have her vaccinated and reportedly only took her to the doctor once in the first nine months of her life. In April 2002, the local authorities saw this as grounds for removing the child from her home in the village of Šimanov, in the Plzeň Region, and taking her into care. The newly named Eliška Gaja Fuxová was allowed to return home after six weeks, following the registration of her birth and vaccinations. Her parents, however, still call her “Bouřka” (“Little Storm”) today.
Sadly, as Eliška recounts in the Deník interview, her story didn’t have an entirely happy ending. She describes her childhood as “messy,” and at the age of 14, voluntarily left home again and moved into a children’s home. Despite the uproar surrounding the “Pulnoční bouře” affair, dozens of Czech babies still go unnamed today, because of a loophole in the current law. After a child is born, both legal parents must register a child’s name but, reported Nova, in cases such as that of the Havlíček family of northern Bohemia, this can be a problem. Here, the mother separated from her first husband and conceived a child with a new partner before getting a divorce. Under Czech law, an ex-husband is legally the father of any child born up to 300 days after a divorce, so even though the new partner is the girl’s biological father, her name can’t be officially registered without the consent and cooperation of the mother’s ex. To resolve the matter, the Havlíčeks took the case to court, which ruled that the daughter would get to choose her own name -- but only when she reaches the age of 18.

Prague Comic-Con 2020 By Nicole Ely Prague Comic-Con was born when Pavel Renčín met Václav Pravda more than a year ago. Renčín, the marketing director for Active Radio, is an avid science fiction and fantasy fan as well as an amateur writer. Pravda, also a sci-fi enthusiast, had experience hosting several fan conferences throughout the region. “It was a perfect match,” Renčín says. The two teamed up to bring the world renowned comic-book and entertainment convention to the Czech capital for the first time. Prague Comic-Con will be held from Feb. 7–9 at O2 Universum. For three days, fans can enjoy non-stop programming and exhibitions featuring everything from video gaming and discussions with Hollywood actors to signings with comic-book authors and cosplay. “Since it’s the first event, we’re trying to be as colorful as possible and we’ll find out what people like the most,” Renčín says. Most of the program will be in Czech, however the highest profile events, like discussions with filmmakers or other foreigners, will be in English with Czech translation. Autographs and photos with actors are allowed with payment. “This community is a world community,” Renčín says. “We’re happy to bring so many fans together so they can share what they love and maybe discover something new.”
COMIC-CON MUST SEES RON PERLMAN
The star of Prague Comic-Con will be Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman. Perlman’s resume speaks for itself with more than 200 theatre, television and film credits dating back to the late 1970s. His career encompasses many genres from drama to sci-fi to thriller, but it was his collaboration with visionary director Guillermo del Toro on the “Hellboy” that solidified him in the mainstream. Now the actor is returning to Prague, where most of the comic book franchise was shot, for the city’s inaugural gathering of fanboys and fangirls. Present Friday 2.7 and Saturday 2.8
CASPER VAN DIEN
ANNA SHAFFER
Hopefully you’re aware of the 1997 cult classic “Starship Troopers.” If not, put this magazine down right now and find it streaming online. We’ll wait. While the satirical sci-fi movie also starred Neil Patrick Harris and Denise Richards, it also served as Casper Van Dien’s breakout role. The actor’s been in more than 60 film and television projects since then, but you know you really want to ask him what it was like battling those evil alien Bugs. Present Saturday 2.8 and Sunday 2.9
“The Witcher” was one of Netflix’s most anticipated fantasy series with rising star Anna Shaffer cast as the sorceress Triss. However, this is not Shaffer’s first bout with magic. Harry Potter fanatics will recognize the British actress as Gryffindor student Romilda Vane who doled out love potions and joined forces against the evil Voldemort. Perhaps she’ll have a few tips on how to defend yourself against the dark arts. Present Sunday 2.9
VLADIMIR FURDIK
The sci-fi comedy series “Red Dwarf” is close to many Czechs’ hearts as it was one of the first Western shows to gain popularity after the end of Communism, according to Renčín. One of the show’s most beloved characters will be making an appearance in Prague. Professional dancer and singer Danny John Jules portrayed Cat, a humanoid creature that evolved from the lead character’s pet feline. While he might’ve been mostly preoccupied with sleeping and self grooming on the show, we’re sure the talented star will be even more lively during his Comic-Con appearance. Present Friday 2.7 and Saturday 2.8
“Game of Thrones” fans will be happy to know that one of the series’ most chilling villains was played by a Slovak. While the Night King is Furdik’s most recent role, he’s also had a long career as a Hollywood stuntman, standing in for actors on films including “Thor: The Dark World,” “Skyfall” and “Prometheus.” If you see him, make sure to ask the leader of the White Walkers what it was like stunting for Nicolas Cage. Just don’t bring any dragon glass. Present Friday 2.7 and Saturday 2.8
DANNY JOHN JULES
BRIAN AZZARELLO Actors are great and all, but ComicCon is really meant for comic book fans. Which is why it’s a great opportunity to meet some of the creative minds behind your favorite graphic series, like Brian Azzarello. A best-selling author, Azzarello has penned stories featuring some of DC’s most well-known good guys and bad guys, including Batman, Superman, the Joker and many more. Present all days
BEN AARONOVITCH Television screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch is another good person to check out in between cosplaying and Q&A sessions. Aaronovitch used to work on the famous English series “Doctor Who.” Since then, he has created the popular urban fantasy Peter Grant book series, which focuses on a police constable’s dealings with the supernatural. Present Friday 2.7 and Sunday 2.9 O2 universum Českomoravská 2345/17 Tickets available at www.comicon.cz.

THE COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It’s always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).

BULLERBYN

anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile, the bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
SHRINK’S OFFICE
CASH ONLY BAR
shrinksoffice.cz AnonymouS’s smaller, more intimate sister. This cocktail therapy bar comes in the form of a hidden, calming cellar inbetween the bustling Wenceslas Square and Národní třída areas. After ringing a bell to get in, you will be given a Rorschach test which the mixologists will use to prepare your drink. +420 608 911 884 for Reservations.
cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like PinUp Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.

The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations

CAFÉ BAR PILOTŮ
barandbooks.cz Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the casual hangout in Mánesova and slightly more formal experience in Týnská). Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Reservations online.
The spacious Café Pilot feels like your grandad’s study with leather upholstery, tables modeled after billiards and floor to ceiling bookshelves. Relax with the sounds of blues and jazz and enjoy heavenly cocktails from the bar’s mixologist – the best Vršovice has to offer. +420 739 765 694 for Reservations.
hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway’s Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.

Žofín Restaurant
These days, it seems like anyone can be a food blogger. All it takes is an appetite, an opinion, and an Instagram account. But then there are good food bloggers. The kind who you think "if they only had a café or a restaurant...". Enter Petr and Gabi, whose Instagram account PG_foodies has over 17,500 followers, and earned them the title of Czech Food Bloggers of 2019. Their new project Etapa moves them from posts to pots and pans. Great coffee, excellent food, and chilled atmosphere.
When we heard that the iconic Stones Catering was chosen as the preferred caterer for events held at Žofín Palace, we were beyond excited. How could that get any better? Well.... then came the news they would also be opening a laid-back fine-dining restaurant inside this stunning palace. The chef Jirka Nosek (who we know from Zdenek’s Oyster Bar) is in charge of the cuisine. Žofín Restaurant is opening on February 3.

A Man's Guide for not messing up
Valentine's Day Although it's not a Czech thing, celebrating Valentine’s Day in Prague isn’t hard with a little planning (something us men aren't always great at). The city is a living fairytale (and sometimes we forget that). It only takes a glance at its stunning castles, charming cobbled streets, and baroque gardens to understand why. But if you’re head-over-heels and looking to amp up the romance even further this Valentine’s Day, we’re here to help. Whether your game is fancy wine bars, relaxing spa days or horse-drawn carriage rides, here’s how to kick your romantic side into high gear in Prague.
ENJOY A COCKTAIL
Alright, we’ll be the first to admit it—the best love stories often start with a little alcohol. But we’re not talking drunken hook-ups at the dive bar. Kick off the night with a handcrafted cocktail at Parlour, a classy, hidden, hushed mixology bar just a few steps from Wenceslas Square with a cozy interior, locals-only feel and no menu. If you want to grab a bit beforehand, we recommend Spejle just around the corner that features ala carte items stuck with a skewer (each skewer is 30kc). The restaurant also has a bad-ass Gin & Tonic menu. After all, it's owned by the same owner as Bugsy's. Romance meter says: ❤
HAVE A GLASS OF VINO (OR TWO)
If wine is your thing, you’re in luck. Prague is home to a number of quality wine bars like Vinograf, a tried-and-true venue with three locations and one of the largest selections of Moravian and Bohemian wines in the city (we’re talking up to 350 options). For a more casual setting, head to Na brehu Rhony, a cafe-like spot that focuses on Cotes du Rhone wines and is close to the Vysehrad fortress, another stop on our romance guide. Or, make a night out of your wine tasting with a visit to Bokovka, a hidden gem of a wine bar co-owned by a group of Czech filmmakers, which means it also offers—you guessed it—a private cinema. Romance meter says: ❤
HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDE
Romance means there’s no limit on the cheesiness factor. Don't be afraid to go all out and look like a tourist. Take ad horse-drawn carriage ride through Old Town (come on, you know you’ve always wanted to). Just be prepared to pony up the cash, no pun intended. Head to the carriages lined up near St. Nicholas Church for a 20-minute ride that’ll set you back 800 to 1,000 CZK. Thankfully, each carriage seats four—make it a double date to half the cost. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
TAKE A SPA DAY
few kilometers outside the city makes it a charming countryside getaway. Plus, we bet you didn’t know the zoo was originally intended to mark the marriage of the Crown Prince of Austria and the Princess of Belgium back in 1881. How romantic is that? Romance meter says: ❤
GO ON A STAYCATION
Keep in mind it's still low season here in Prague. Most hotels are offering amazingly discounted prices this time of year. Treat yourself and a loved one to a four star weekend without leaving town. Really, there must be a reason millions of people holiday here each year. Make sure you check the amenities and spa services at the hotel of your choosing (and ask if there's a local's discount). Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
TAKE A WALK
You deserve it. We recommend the Corinthia Hotel, where the upscale Apollo Day Spa on the top floor offers a panoramic view of Prague from an indoor pool. If you’re looking for something more...unusual...head to the beer spa located in Vinohradsky Dum. Yes, this actually does exist—here, you’ll bathe in in a special beer rich with microelements and vitamin B in a treatment known as balneotherapy. Finally, Aqua Palace is the spot for a more family-friendly venture. Drop the kids off at the water park and head to the “sauna world” and spa for a couple’s treatment. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
Going back to basics doesn’t have to be boring. Going for a walk in Prague is a romantic venture in itself, whether you’re hitting the historic Vysehrad fortress, panoramic Letna park, or the charming Naplavka river bank, where you can marvel at the white swans that dot the Vltava. For an extra dose of romance (or two), take a trip to Petrin Hill, where a miniature Eiffel Tower is surrounded by cherry tree gardens and a statue of romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha. Let’s just say there’s a reason couples line up to kiss in this park on May 1, Prague’s unofficial Love Day. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
GO TO THE OPERA OR SYMPHONY
Prague may be home to a wealth of interesting museums and exhibits, but why not buy a piece of art together? Our pick is Galerie La Femme, an intimate space on Bilkova street that showcases contemporary Czech art. And just think of how sophisticated you'll look. Romance meter says: ❤
You can’t go wrong with a night at the National Theatre, one of the most stunning destinations in the city. The more than 130-year-old venue is home to opera, drama, ballet and laterna magika, a multimedia style that combines digital technologies with live performance. Can’t get a ticket to the National Theatre? No worries. The theatre is also connected to the equallyromantic State Opera, Estates Theatre, Karlin Music Theatre, and New Stage, where laterna magika performances are held. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤
PRAGUE ZOO
Trips to the zoo shouldn’t be reserved for just kids. Especially in Prague, where the city’s zoo has been listed among the best in the world by the likes of Forbes and TripAdvisor. The Prague Zoo hosts nearly 5,000 animals and 650 species, so you won’t run out of things to see. Not only is the zoo a fun destination to marvel at penguins, tigers, giraffes, and other animals, but its location a

GET INSPIRED BY ART
SEND FLOWERS
Two rules for ordering flowers in Prague. First, on Valentines - don't wait until the last minute. Secondly - don't just Google it. Photos of flowers on websites are a lot like Tinder profile photos, and nothing says "I didn't try that hard," like having to explain why your bouquet doesn't look like you expected. Our recommendation is Cool Flowers. Trust us, they're the ones your girlriend wants and she' probably already following them on Instagram. And unless you know exactly what she likes, just let the Cool Flowers team suggest something. You can reach them at 775 683 780.
HAVE AN AMAZING DINNER
Don’t let Prague’s blossoming restaurant scene go to waste. Splurge on one of Prague’s many new fine dining options. Gallery 44 is nestled in Old Town and we can't say enough great things about it. The menu is fairly fluid, bringing in new Michelin-quality renowned chefs in every quarter on rotation. Set in a medieval cellar and decorated with art from the esteemed DSC Gallery and perfect lighting, this has to be one of the most romantic hidden spots we know of. You'll want to book now - there are only 44 seats in the restaurant. Book a reservation at 605 177 117. Žofín Restaurant is the newest restaurant offering from the famed Stone Catering (see our Openings page). If you're quick, perhaps you'll be able to get a table here since they just opened. It's hard to have a romantic dinner sometimes if you have kids. But hidden downstairs at the popular restaurant Food Lab, you'll find a variety of things to offer up children's entertainment, without sacrificing your romantic ambiance. There's a baby gym, toys, video game area - and best of all an attendant to keep an eye on your little ones. Meanwhile, upstairs you can enjoy the Valentine's Day Wine Pairing Dinner. It's a five course dinner for 799kc and wine pairings for 500kc, all inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Don't worry, there's no poison at the end. We also discovered one of our favorite new restaurants Avant Garde at Evropská 17 in Praha 6 is doing Valentine's Dinner as well, and we whole-heartedly recommend. The atmosphere is new and contemporary and every meal we've had there has been noteworthy. The six course Valentine's dinner for two people is 2600kc. Check our website at pragueresident.com for a list of several local restaurants we recommend for Valentine's Day, including several menus. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
