The perfect grounds for doing something good. Welcome to our second issue! We've had such incredible feedback from last month's edition. Thank you for your thoughts, ideas and contributions. Speaking of contributions, we want to formally welcome local writer Sam Beckwith to the fold. His website Prague Pig.com has been a source of entertainment for us for a while, and his wrap up of Czech Tabloids this month had us all giggling. This month we've also highlighted three cafés you can visit that give back to this beautiful community you call home - Mezičasy Cafe, Café AdAstra and the Skautský institut café. Plus, we dive into where to drink in Malá Strana. Yes, we know

that by now you've probably written off the district as forever full of tourists and the annoyances they bring with them, but even Malá Strana has its hidden gems. From Napa and Roesel Beer & Cake to the new Schody Home Bar, come have a drink with us! For over three years, we've published The Prague Visitor magazine, which is available in over three hundred locations across Prague - mainly hotels. We aim the magazine at visitors looking for real and authentic experiences, promoting only the best restaurants, bars and things to do. We vowed we wouldn't take advertisers with low ratings, bad reviews or bad reputations, and we've stuck
with that even if we sometimes have to turn away business. We crafted the magazine to be like having a local friend giving recommendations. Fast forward a few years and later and few friends and long-time Prague residents expressed their love for our magazine but asked us for less tourist-specific content. So, here we are. Our goal is to tell the stories of the people, places and events that make Prague such an amazing city to live, work and play. As we've developed the idea of this magazine, the one thing we've decided is that we want you, our reader, to be a part of it.

CU P Three local Cafés that are serving a good cause Here are three cafés you can grab an amazing cup of coffee from that give back to this beautiful city. Mezičasy Cafe cooperates with next door neighbors Život 90, an organization dedicated to making the lives better of Prague’s elderly citizens. The provide various services for the elderly and focus on improving their quality of life, so no person has to be ashamed of their age. Residents over the age of 65 make up about 15% of the country’s population and are covered under the national insurance free of charge. However, state-funded nursing homes and programs for long-term care are widely-regarded to be unpleasant and often suffer from insufficient capacity, with waiting lists reaching into the tens of thousands. Život 90 aims to solve this problem
by offering free care for the elderly to keep them as comfortable as possible in their own homes. Café AdAstra is the brainchild of Zajíček na koni, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the independence and self-confidence of people with disabilities. By providing a place to work and interact with others every day, Café AdAstra helps those with disabilities assimilate into society. While there are schools for the disabled to attend and learn various trades, there are not many opportunities in the workforce upon graduation, leaving many without options of what to do. Zajíček na koni aims to solve this problem and spread awareness of these issues through the café. The Skautský institut operates under Junák, the national organization of Czech scouts and the
largest educational NGO for youth in the country with over 60,000 members. Originally founded in 1911, the organization has been forced to disband three times – in 1940 with the start of WWI, 1948 after the Communist coup and again in 1970 after the Prague Spring. Despite being shutdown multiple times in its 100-year existence, Junák always reemerged within weeks of freedom returning to the country. This spirit of resilience and commitment to democracy is what the scouts represent to this day. Junák encourages children and youth to grow their intellect, morality and physical skills, and teaches them to care about the people and nature in the world around them. The Skautský institut shares these scouting ideals with the general public. February 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Mezičasy Cafe finds their purpose
Tucked away in a maze of winding streets in Old Town, Mezičasy serves coffee with a smile and a story. Located in the building where author Karolina Světlá grew up, the café is a warm and welcoming space, with tiny cacti in espresso cups decorating the tables and charming glass bottles filled with plants lining the walls. In the first room an espresso bar invites you to have a quick cup and go, but keep going and you’ll find a cozy room to slowly savor your coffee, appreciating the cobble-stoned streets through the lovely arched windows. The café boasts freshly baked cakes and pastries and daily made sandwiches with all fresh ingredients. Plus, there’s an ever-changing daily soup menu and a selection of wines and local beer. But the real story here is the coffee, and the non-profit it supports. “We know exactly who harvested, picked and washed it, from every farmer to every delivery guy,” says Jakub Seiner, Head Barista and PR Director for Mezičasy. “We know exactly what we are roasting and drinking.” Mezičasy’s roastery, Beansmith’s Specialty Coffee, is deeply connected to the raw nature of the bean. They select their coffee from mountainous environments for the best, mature flavors. Everything is hand-picked – no machinery taints the beans – and they roast it themselves at an old forge. Brand new machines at the café finish out the process and provide the perfect cup of coffee. “We want to not only serve amazing specialty 10
PRAGUE RESIDENT | February 2019
coffee, but also the story behind the beans,” says Seiner. “Right now we serve brand new coffee from Ethiopia. It’s not just coffee, not just brown beans – we approach it like you would a good wine or craft beer, sharing the story of the hard work behind it.” Seiner, who’s headed to the Barista of the Year competition this month, is Mezičasy’s coffee guru, training the baristas to care intensely about the specialty coffee they serve and the customers who enjoy it. “Our baristas are more trained than other cafés, we serve the best coffee we possibly can,” says Seiner. “We focus on the flavors and the service.” The result is a small team of baristas dedicated to creating the best coffee experience, not only caring about the story the coffee tells but also about making customers feel welcome. This has been a bit of a challenge, as Prague is not known for its friendly service and those who lived through the communism era are often wary of small talk. Mezičasy’s baristas want to make a connection with everyone who comes in, not just mindlessly serve them an impersonal cup of coffee. “You have to love coffee, then you can work on it and make it more visible and enjoyable for others,” says Seiner. “When you see the smiles when customers taste your latte, it warms up their heart, and yours.” About a year ago, Beansmith’s found this space next to the organization Život 90, which supports Prague’s elderly community, and realized the café and non-profit are a perfect fit – the café can share the stories of not only the coffee workers but
also Prague’s elderly, helping both. The café fully opened in the fall, with “specialty coffee and a social purpose.” Since the 90s, Život 90 has helped Prague’s elderly live better lives. They provide therapists, counseling on social and legal matters, and services 24/7 with an emergency call line. Volunteers support the elderly in their homes, helping them run the household, get food, and keep up with hygiene. This way the elderly can remain as independent as possible and continue to live in their own homes, instead of having to move to an unfamiliar place. Profits from Mezičasy help Život 90 host events, such as lectures, discussions and singing sessions. Recently the organization filled multiple floors with a special Christmas Market. Profits from the café also go towards providing healthcare and other necessities. The charming café attracts all ages, from supporters of Život 90 to those looking for a cozy spot to enjoy an amazing coffee. For Život 90, Mezičasy is a daily way to help people by spreading happiness. “A cup of coffee is a small part of your day you can share with your loved ones,” says Seiner. “They will remember those small moments forever.” Visit Mezičasy Cafe Monday-Friday, 8:00 - 21:00, and Saturday 9:00-21:00, and Sunday 9:00 - 18:00 at Betlémská 5.
AdAstra gives staff a big cup of confidence
Underneath the Vyšehrad Fortress and just a block away from the beautiful Vltava lies Café AdAstra. Meaning “to the stars,” AdAstra gives hope and confidence to people with physical, mental or sociocultural disabilities who cannot work comfortably in the regular labor market. “I have a seriously disabled sister,” says Šulcová. “So my other sister and I and colleagues from our organization were inspired to start the café in order to empower people with disabilities.” AdAstra helps the disabled to grow their independence and people skills on a daily basis. 28-year-old Zuzka, who is mentally challenged, started out nervous, shy and quite scared. In the past two and a half years she has found her home behind the bar, blossoming into a sweet and communicative woman. 30-year-old Petr has always loved communicating with and helping people, which the café now allows him to do professionally. Many employees have worked there for years, including 26-year-old Marie. Marie, who has Down syndrome, autism and a heart disease, has been a part of the café program since the beginning 8 years ago. “They experience a unique feeling of autonomy and independence that improves their lives, and ours,” says Šulcová. “There is no other business like this in Prague.” AdAstra’s wooden interior is instantly cozy and comfortable, complete with an old piano, centerpiece bar and an entire wall of shelves lined
with books and art. Enjoy a glass of wine at the bar, savor a coffee in the armchairs with a friend, or enjoy a meal in the giant window seats. The café serves freshly baked cakes and pastries, plus coffee, traditional Czech beer and a large wine and liqueur selection. It’s the perfect lunch destination with daily menus featuring various soups and delicious dishes ranging from Greek chicken with hummus and pita bread to potato gnocchi with cream and spinach. The café also host concerts and events and has a shop of products made by the employees. The space has a piano and various musical instruments for anyone to play, and plenty of toys and books for children. AdAstra currently has around 30 employees with a wide range of duties. “They serve guests, prepare tables, clean the café, help at the barista bar and in the kitchen, wash dishes, fold napkins, tear mint and other herbs and make things for the shop,” says Šulcová. “Everyone works according to their capabilities and abilities.” AdAstra is a part of Zajíček na koni, a nonprofit that focuses on improving the lives of the disabled through interaction with nature and financial support. When Zajíček na koni launched in 2004 they simply provided activities that clients specifically requested. Since then they have evolved into providing full annual programs. “Our first project was horse-racing for people with disabilities,” says Šulcová. “This was followed
by summer and winter camps and a volunteer service as a babysitter for children with disabilities. Our big project throughout the year collects money for various activities of children who suffer from poverty in the Czech Republic.” In 2011, Zajíček na koni had the idea to cooperate with cafés throughout Prague in order to give those with disabilities a job. Just four years ago they were able to open Café AdAstra with this sole purpose. Currently, the café does not make a profit, but as support for the café grows profits will go towards salaries for the employees and the summer camps. Besides having a delicious cup of coffee, you can also show your support by bringing supplies to the café such as A4 paper, pens, dishes and cutlery, and clothing. AdAstra provides a space for those with disabilities to feel important, useful and independent, boosting their self-confidence and self-esteem and truly allowing them to reach for the stars.
Visit Café AdAstra Monday through Friday 11:00 - 23:00 and Saturdays 10:0023:00 at Podskalská 8, Prague 2. Call or email Markéta Šulcová for more ways to get involved: +420 731 009 645, sulcova@zajiceknakoni.cz

Skautský institut is brewing something good
Most residents steer clear of Old Town’s tourist crowds and over-priced restaurants, but they’re missing out on one of Prague’s best hidden gems, the Skautský institut. Nestled next to the astronomical clock in the heart of Old Town Square, the space dates back to the 15th century. Find the entrance marked Prague Creative Center and head up the stairs for an amazing (and cheap!) cup of coffee that supports an important cultural space. Enjoy your drink in the beautiful multi-level courtyard or cozy up next to the many windows overlooking the square. Janek Rubeš, YouTuber, tourist-trap-fighter, and one half of the famous “Honest Guide” series, calls the café "a true paradise in an ocean of tourist bullshit" – and he’s absolutely right. The café serves coffee and wine, small toasts and snacks and freshly baked goods, all for amazing prices. Known for having the best cheap beer in the district, the Institute has become one of Únětice brewery’s biggest customers. They also have their own special unfiltered bottled beer, made by a local microbrewery. Newly expanded, the café is charmingly rustic with decorative branches and wooden furniture crafted by scouts and volunteers. Even the barista bar was constructed by caring volunteers. Behind the bar you’ll find a small team that fits together more like a family than as employees. “They put their heart into it,” says Jakub Ambrozek, the Institute’s Communications Director. “Every day at closing time you’ll find them all here hanging out together. The mantra isn’t so much to be professional but rather to foster a relaxed and open atmosphere.” While the amazing prices will lure you in, the friendly atmosphere will keep you coming back. “The spirit of scouting is here,” says Ambrozek,
a lifelong scout himself. “It’s informal, a little punk. Come spend some time here and you’ll feel how this emerged from the enthusiasm of a group of young people who didn’t see barriers but saw opportunities. When good people put their heads and energy together, wanting to do something for the public space, it works!” Originally hosting just one event a month at cafés around the city, the Institute worked with city hall to acquire the location in Old Town Square. Instead of becoming luxury apartments, the space became the home of the Scouting Institute and its café just four years ago. The café is just the tip of the iceberg though. “In 2018 there were over 500 events here,” says Ambrozek. “Around 50 every month – movie screenings, debates, seminars and lectures, even yoga.” Charming and cozy in the winter, the space is even more magical in the warmer months when they host film screenings outside in the courtyard. Profits from the café go towards hosting these events, almost all of which are free and entirely open to the public. “This morning we had the mayor here for an informal debate,” says Ambrozek. “We hope to reach more senior citizens, mothers and university students through breakfasts like this with interesting people.” The Scouting Institute operates under Junák, the Czech scout organization. Originally created to keep the memories of the scouts alive through archives, the Institute has grown exponentially in the past five years and evolved into a welcoming cultural space that fosters openness to ideas and the spread of knowledge and curiosity. “We’ve become a think-tank for the scouts,” says Ambrozek. “Scouting has a lot to say to the public.
We introduce those values through a system of informal, open education. We don’t just remain in the past, we create a space for meeting and debating. The opportunities are endless.” The building itself is a seemingly endless maze of lecture spaces, meeting rooms and a theater, with ceiling murals, unique views of the astronomical clock, and pianos and bookshelves lining the courtyard walls. You can even hang out in a tent constructed in a uniquely Czech design. In WWII there was a shortage of tarp for tents. They solved this by building a square base out of wood and connecting the tarp in tent fashion above that. This design stuck and is now a trademark of Czech scouts. Perfect for camping, the tent also makes for a cozy spot to enjoy a beer or two with friends. The space’s mini arches and countless doorways not only connect the historic buildings of U zlatého rohu and Dům U Minuty, but also various organizations. There are around 25 organizations here, including government departments and Charles University faculty. The Institute occupies only the first floor but collaborates closely with its upstairs neighbors. “This is what makes it all happen,” says Ambrozek. “The academics, NGOs, government and start-ups – the mixing and mingling is where it gets creative. The possibilities are limitless.”
Visit the Skautský institut Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 22:00, Saturday 10:0022:00, Sunday 10:00 - 18:00 at Staroměstské náměstí 1/4.

The month in Czech tabloids
In a new column, PraguePig.com editor Sam Beckwith sifts through the news nobody else wants to tell you.
Crime and snow dominated the headlines as 2019 began, adding to the somber mood across the Czech Republic, but the post-Christmas period wasn’t entirely fun-free. PraguePig.com’s most popular Facebook post of the past month involved an unusual Xmas wish. Like America’s Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Ježíškova vnoučata (“Ježíšek’s Grandchildren”) project specializes in making dreams come true—in this case, granting Christmas wishes for residents of old people’s homes. Brilliantly, those projects included an 80-yearold grandmother who wanted to see a male stripper in the flesh. “I wish I could see live what I’ve only ever admired on television,” Eva explained on the charity’s website. And sure enough, her wish was granted. “Rocky”, a male stripper from Ostrava, visited her Orlová, Moravian-Silesian Region rest home one December afternoon, to perform for Eva and around 20 other residents (including one man). “They were friendly and kind, but they also looked on me with curiosity,» he told news site Aktuálně.cz. His audience was a little surprised at first, he added, but eventually began to get into the swing of things, slapping his bottom and squeezing his biceps.
Into the white While Prague was spared the worst of the January snow, parts of northern Bohemia saw up to 40 centimeters (16 inches) of the fluffy stuff in one day. Worst hit was Boží Dar (“God’s Gift”), a ski resort
high in the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), where the I/25, the only road out of town, was closed for seven days. Fire crews brought in snow-clearing equipment from Karlovy Vary airport and were eventually able to re-open the road on January 16. Meanwhile, in what sounded like the premise of a bad Hollywood movie, authorities in nearby Jablonec nad Nisou drafted in six prisoners to help with snow clearance. As far as we know, there were no escapees and local residents seemed unfazed by the plan. “As long as they’re not thinking of running away, why not,” a passing pensioner told a TV Nova news crew. Further east, in the Orlické hory (Eagle Mountains), the Buková hora ski resort witnessed a different kind of drama on January 17 when a falling tree disabled a chair lift stretching 1.68 kilometers (1.04 miles), leaving around 70 people dangling in the air. In a delicate operation lasting three and a half hours, members of the fire service’s specialist mountain rescue teams were lowered from helicopters on harnesses and plucked the unlucky skiers to safety. “I’m frozen and I’m going straight to the pub for a stiff drink,” a grateful skier told Nova.
Police and thieves In a country where violent crime is rare, the news, just a few days after Christmas, that an armed man had taken eight people hostage at a Unicredit bank in Příbram, Central Bohemia was a big shock. Thankfully, the stand-off ended without injury to hostages or hostage-taker. Using the
sound of church bells to cover the noise of their stun grenades, the Czech police’s elite URNA rapid reaction unit, whose duties have included working in Kosovo and Iraq, stormed in shortly after 5pm. January brought apparent closure to another shocking crime. Six weeks after the murder of a female filling station attendant in Nelahozeves, Central Bohemia, two suspects were arrested. Along with the senselessness of the killing, the robbery was notable for one of the suspect’s having a noticeable limp. After studying CCTV footage of the crime, a police expert added to the mystery by putting forward the theory that the limping thief could be a woman. Thoughts of a Bonnie & Clydestyle partnership were banished, however, when the suspects were partially identified as David Š. and Ivan H.—two men living in the local area. Normal, sleepy service resumed a couple of weeks later, when the Prague police, in all seriousness, issued a press release appealing for witnesses to the theft of a coat from the Metropole Zličín shopping center. The suspect, in case you’re wondering, is a white male in his thirties with a nice new coat. Finally, for anyone struggling to stick to their New Year’s resolutions, former child star Pavel Horňák provided proof that it really is possible to reinvent yourself. Formerly a singer in ‘80s pop group Kroky Františka Janečka, 50-year-old Horňák was recently appointed a Czech Supreme Court judge. The spacious Café Pilot feels like your grandad’s study with leather upholstery, tables modeled after billiards and floor to ceiling bookshelves. Relax with the sounds of blues and jazz and enjoy heavenly cocktails from the bar’s mixologist – the best Vršovice has to offer. +420 739 765 694 for Reservations.
Crazy Daisy
Václavské náměstí 4, Prague 1
crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite almost a club, not quite a club hotspots. First Republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
Dandy
Anny Letenské 18, Prague 2
dandyprague.com With retro armchairs and sofas that look straight out of the 60s(?), this cozy gay bar has an extensive drink selection, plus amazing coffee and food plates. Hang out with the friendly bartenders while sipping on one of their creative signature cocktails, like the Dirty Daddy or Vegan Grindr. +420 605 827 981 or +420 725 565 401 for Reservations.
Edison Letná
Šmeralova 5, Prague 7
edisonletna.cz Newcomer to the scene, Edison’s serving up custom cocktails with a full menu of delicious international dishes. +420 223 002 503 for Reservations.
Elbow Room
Veletržní 40, Prague 7
This unmarked bar is a hidden favorite for a relaxing evening in Letná. With an extensive list
of signature cocktails, the subtle Latino music adds to the intimate vibe. From the same owner as the legendary Bukowski’s.
Hemingway Bar
Karolíny Světlé 26, Prague 1
hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway's Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 5, Prague 1
labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. And if you're looking to go full Cuban, it happens to be located underneath Cohiba Atmosphere cigar bar. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
L’Fleur
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1
lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Malkovich
Bořivojova 100, Prague 3
With wallpaper that looks like your grandmother’s sofa, Malkovich is a comfy Bohemian paradise and beloved by locals. Just a few doors down from Bukowski’s, come for good music, signature cocktails and arguably the best Long Island you’ll
ever taste. +420 721 311 021 for Reservations.
Martin’s Bistro Velehradská 4, Prague 3
The product of a husband and wife team, Martin’s is friendly, low-key and has an excellent weekly food menu on top of its classic cocktail selection. +420 774 100 378 for Reservations.
Parlour Krakovská 15, Prague 1
parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
Schody Home Bar Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1
Recently opened bespoke cocktail bar and sister to one of our favorite cocktail places, Parlour. Located right on the stairs (schody) leading to the Prague Castle, like Parlour it's also hard to find but well worth the search. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret and they're trying to keep it that way.
Tretter’s V kolkovně 3, Prague 1
tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations.

Silver Lining Playbook By Matthew Quick LAZARSKÁ 1, PRAHA 1
Meet Pat Peoples. Pat has a theory: his life is a movie produced by God. And his God-given mission is to become physically fit and emotionally literate, whereupon God will ensure him a happy ending--the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. (It might not come as a surprise to learn that Pat has spent several years in a mental health facility.) The problem is, Pat's now home, and everything feels off. No one will talk to him about Nikki; his beloved Philadelphia Eagles keep losing; he's being pursued by the deeply odd Tiffany; his new therapist seems to recommend adultery as a form of therapy. Plus, he's being haunted by Kenny G!

Our guide to drinking like a non-tourist in
Malá Strana
There's a good chance that past your first few months or even weeks in Prague you may have written off Malá Strana as beautiul but packed full of lost tourists, gimmicky shops and overpriced bars and restaurants. But don't worry, even this district has its hidden gems. This month, we're telling you about a few of our favorite "non-tourist trap" safe bets to grab a cocktail, beer or glass of wine. From the iconic Blue Light Bar to the latest hot spots including Parlour's sister bar Schody Home Bar or Roesel Beer & Cake, let's grab a round!
Roesel Beer & Cake
Mostecká 20
Vibe: Hipster Heaven They had us with beer AND cake. Charming café right next to but hidden away from the chaos of Charles Bridge. Weekly small lunch plates and a rotating selection of craft beer, including IPAs, from local microbrewery Clock. Enjoy your drinks in the quaint hallway courtyard, weather permitting. What we’ll have: Any of the Clock brews on tap (you can’t go wrong)!
Jo’s Bar & Restaurant Malostranské náměstí 7
Vibe: Lively restaurant and bar Our favorite burger place near the castle doubles down with a wide array of drinks and a great bespoke cocktail selection. The beautiful heavily wooded bar and friendly staff makes it one of our favorite places to grab a bite with a few adult chasers. What we’ll have: The fruity Mrs. Raspbee with rosemary and lime or a vibrant glass of Czech Frankovka.

Napa Bar and Gallery Prokopská 8
Vibe: The neighborhood local The name Napa Bar and Gallery may sound like a snooty wine bar, but really it’s just your friendly neighborhood local. A wide array of cheap drinks, multiple rooms with comfy sofas, a piano (and occasional live music), a pool table and a courtyard make it the perfect place to grab a drink with friends. Pro tip: Try the klobasa from the grill in the courtyard if they’re cooking (usually on a weekend). What we’ll have: Light, crisp lager Ježek from the Moravian Jihlava Brewery, a bottle of wine (which costs less than ten euros), or a classic cocktail – they’ve got it all.
Vinotéka U Mouřenína Tržiště 17
Vibe: Upscale atmosphere that's shockingly affordable Located next to the American Embassy, this cozy and elegant wine bar and shop features both local and French wines with excellent prices for the district, plus light snacks like cheeses, meats and charcuterie plates. Perfect for a late-night romantic glass of wine after a walk through Malá Strana. Fair warning, they close at 10 pm. What we’ll have: A local red from the Moravian region paired with a delicious cheese plate (our favorite is the peppered cheese)
Schody Home Bar Zámecké schody 8
Vibe: Cozy and Cool Sister to our favorite beloved cocktail bar Parlour, the fairly new Schody Home Bar is a cozy secret hidden right on the famous steps leading up to the castle. Hard to find but well worth the search, you’ll find yourself in an intimate, open-concept room decorated with classy dangling lights and a unique tile design. There's no sign, and when you think you've found it, you'll need to knock on the window to be let in. During the days, Schody is offering up amazing coffees as well. What we’ll have: Like Parlour, there's no drink menu, but the bartender will develop a bespoke drink based on whatever desire you can describe. FebruARY 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

U Staré studny Tržiště 3
Vibe: Cozy underground wine bar This wine bar has every wine, cognac, and champagne you can think of (it’s no wonder, their other business is wine distribution). Literally meaning “In the Well,” there is an actual ancient well in the bar. Located in a cellar, the bar is elegant and cozy. What we’ll have: With daily wine tastings, the wine of the day is always a safe (and amazing) bet.
Bar Bluelight Josefská 1
Vibe: Super cool dive bar This legendary dive bar boasts an extensive cocktail and wine selection and is known for its elite clientele, from actors and musicians to politicians. Every inch of the space is covered in drawings and signatures, while the bohemian assortment of pictures and beer bottle chandelier add to the eclectic atmosphere. Come for a drink, stay for the compelling conversation (but be prepared to yell, the bar gets packed). What we’ll have: The High Society with Gin, Campari, peach liqueur and pink grapefruit for the perfect blend of sweet and sour, mirroring the mix of the bar’s expat and elite patrons.

U Malého Glena Karmelitská 23
Vibe: Classic Jazz Pub U Malého Glena has been a part of the local bar scene since just after the Velvet Revolution. The Jazz and Blues club is packed almost every night. The bar, which translates to “Little Glenn” takes its name from American owner and one of Prague’s founding expats Glenn Spicker who is an avid jazz player himself. What we’ll have: If it’s a school night, we stick with a Guiness, but nothing goes better with jazz than a nice sipping whiskey.
Strahov Brewery Strahovské nádvoří 10
Vibe: Best brew with a view History, history, history. This brewery is located in a monastery that dates all the way back to the 12th century. It’s a bit of a hike up, but the stunning views of the entire city are worth it. Plus, the classic Czech food served in a traditional beer hall is a must-have experience. Pro tip: If you don't fancy the walk up the hill, you can take the number 22 tram from Malostranské náměstí to the Pohořelec stop. What we’ll have: Strahov's own pivo called St. Norbert in a classic Czech mug, duh.

BY Bektash Musa Good Soldier Švejk – Dobrý voják Švejk (1957) The Good Soldier Švejk is the abbreviated title of an unfinished satirical dark comedy novel by Jaroslav Hašek. Originally titled Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války, meaning The Good Soldier Švejk and His Fortunes in the World War, Švejk is a staple of the Czech cultural scene, often regarded, albeit ironically, as the quintessential Czech. The character is known for his absurd antics and bumbling, dimwit ways of surviving 30

WWI. The comedy is the most translated novel of Czech literature, having been translated into over 50 languages. Its original illustrations were drawn by famed Czech artist Josef Lada, with newer cartoons added by Olympic gold-medalist and illustrator Petr Urban. The novel explores the madness of war as a concept and wonders if the only way to deal with such idiocy is to either be, or fake being, an idiot. Czech director Karel Steklý directed the film and shot almost entirely in Prague. You can see here how the historical Charles Bridge looked
over 60 years ago. If you recognize the name Švejk, that’s because it’s become a common name for cafés, restaurants and shops across the Czech Republic in honor of The Good Soldier himself. Turkish photographer Bektash Musa fell in love with Prague at first sight. A fan of media, Musa also wanted to show the world the beauty of the city through the eyes of directors who filmed here, pairing photos of actual places with scenes from movies, television shows, documentaries and music video where they were originally shot.
