The beast inside
Wild animals and professional footballers loomed large in the Czech news last month.
By Samuel Beckwith, PraguePig.com The summer months are known as the “okurková sezóna” (“cucumber season”) in Czech media circles. It’s the time when Czechs supposedly retreat to their cottages to pickle cucumbers, real news stories become hard to find, and journalists turn to sillier features to fill their pages. It’s PraguePig.com’s favorite time of year. Stories in which a wild animal escapes from a private zoo are a common feature of cucumber season, so it wasn’t a shock to hear police warn the public that a big cat resembling a cougar had been spotted between the South Bohemian villages of Velký Ratmírov and Deštná. Eight days later, on 23 June, a similar creature was spotted more than 50 kilometers away, near Želiv in the Vysočina Region. PraguePig.com’s favorite animal story was less dramatic. In a tale reminiscent of a 1950s children’s book, a fire crew was called to Havraní, an abandoned Sudetenland village in the Liberec Region, after scouts found a badger trapped down a well. Local website Liberecká Drbna was happy to report that the badger was freed unharmed and released back into the wild. Another cute animal story came courtesy of Prague zoo, where Indian elephant Gulab was celebrating her 60th birthday. Among the guests at Gulab’s party was Tejesh Sharma, son of M.M. Sharma, the Indian businessman who had delivered the young elephant to Czechoslovakia in the mid1960s. According to zoo director Miroslav Bobek, the older Sharma travelled to Prague to negotiate a deal with Commie-era import/export agency Metalimex and was assigned a Czech secretary
(identified only as “Mrs. Kostníková” in Deník.cz’s report) to assist him during his stay. Upon departure, Sharma asked Kostníková if she wanted a gift from India and, in jest, she suggested an elephant. Panic ensued when it emerged that Sharma had kept his promise, and that Gulab would be delivered by boat to the Croatian port of Rijeka. Eventually, however, the junior jumbo was loaded onto a truck in the former Yugoslavia and found a new home at Prague zoo. Not to be left out, President Miloš Zeman contributed his own animal story, telling TV Barrandov that the lemming—a small Arctic rodent—was “a type of butterfly.” Evidence, perhaps, that Zeman’s much-vaunted wit and wisdom doesn’t extend to zoology.
Football crazy Real news hasn’t dried up entirely, of course. The massive demonstrations against Prime Minister Andrej Babiš made international headlines and, for Czech tabloids, there were two stories of far greater importance: the jailing of former footballer Tomáš Řepka and ice hockey legend Jaromír Jágr’s breakup with his girlfriend, Veronika Kopřivová. The twists and turns in Řepka’s story have been particularly fertile tabloid fodder. The one-time Sparta Praha, Fiorentina and West Ham hardman has been involved in a bewildering range of legal disputes in the last couple of years, and justice finally caught up with him on May 27, when he reported to the Prague 6-Ruzyně prison at the beginning of a two-and-a-half-year sentence. Řepka’s jail time is a combined punishment for two offenses: posting
fake sex ads in former wife Vlad’ka Erbová’s name, and trying to sell a Mercedes he didn’t own. Daily tabloid Blesk gave Řepka’s imprisonment the level of coverage you’d expect for a state occasion, down to details of what he was wearing when he entered the prison (“jeans, a black T-shirt, and a blue shirt”), the color of the doors he went through when he arrived (“purple”), and what his fellow inmates shouted to him from their cell windows (not really suitable for publication). Tomáš wasn’t the only soccer star making news off the pitch. Currently at unglamorous MFK Karviná, charismatic coach František “Franz” Straka gave a post-match interview that went viral after he failed to notice that his team had won their match. Speaking to a reporter from TV channel ČT Sport, Straka insisted that his team had drawn the first game of their relegation/promotion playoff with Vysočina Jihlava, 2-2, when, in fact, Jihlava’s late “equalizer” had been ruled out for offside. “I’m sorry, I didn’t register it,” Straka admitted. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Florin Niță’s attempts to buy a couple of post-season beers from a Kaufland supermarket made news when, according to Facebook user Jaroslav Homolka, a xenophobic cashier harangued the Romanian citizen for not speaking Czech, and demanded that he show ID, despite clearly being old enough to legally buy alcohol. Niță, however, isn’t any old Romanian expat. He’s Sparta Praha’s first-choice goalkeeper and an occasional member of the Romanian national team. Kaufland have since apologized. The
CAfé Addicts
Nightingale 9 Slavíkova 9, Praha 3 www.nightingale9.cz Monday - Friday 9am to 10pm Saturday and Sunday 10am. to 10pm
Nightingale 9 is an ode to caffeine and quirky science fiction. The café’s interior is filled with steampunk decorations: old cellos, antique suitcases, vintage radios, navigation tools, scales, alarm clocks, and bookshelves made of old piping. With seating for just around twenty people, Nightingale 9’s leather lined seating and giant model zeppelin ascending from the ceiling creates a cozy atmosphere. One of the most interesting interior elements is the thick perpendicular copper metal pipes playfully rising from the wall into the ceiling like church organs. There is no shortage of antiesthetic novelties to keep a customer’s attention.
The Caprese Croissant stuffed with mozzarella that is sourced from Prague’s own MozzarellaArt is warm, flakey, and buttery. Although the portion may be a bit small, the pastry comes with a small side salad and coffee. This special offer is not just limited to the Caprese Croissant as all breakfast specials (55kc to 110kc) include free coffee. There is also Lavazza coffee on tap, along with Espressos that are 45kc. The menu also has gluten free and health conscious dishes for those who are looking for something lighter. For instance, the Begata Sweet Goat sandwich features toasted baguettes with butter and honey, mixed lettuce, candied pear cognac, balsamic reduction, honey and nuts, watercress, and goat cheese (139kc). Not uncommon in Czech Cafes, Nightingale 9 features a daily dessert display with sweets made inhouse: cheesecakes, tiramisus, pistachio chocolate cups, and chocolate cream pops. (60kc -85kc). The tiramisu comes in a large portion, with a light texture, packed with its famous espresso flavor. Nightingale 9 is worth a visit for all meals. Aside from the breakfast and lunch assortment, there is also

Inside, attention is drawn to the coffee bar, which sits in the middle of the café, topped with a beautiful Spirit Triplette Espresso Machine. There are various seating options surrounding: small wooden tables and chairs, large plush chairs, and colorful couches. Separating many of the tables are wooden bookshelves filled with Czech and English books, while the overhead space is decorated with hanging plants. Framed paintings line the wall, adding to the overall aesthetic. There are also copies of the paintings on the menu with descriptions in Czech. There is a wide variety of coffee to choose from, ranging from the traditional Espresso (50kc) to specialty coffees such as the Ice Cube Latte named “Mount Everest” (115kc). The café can also make decaffeinated versions or

provide an almond milk substitute. One drink worth trying is the Caramel Latte (95kc), which was served with a side of extra caramel. The coffee beans are sourced from all around the world, then prepared locally in the Czech Republic. The menu was designed by Petr Vlasek- a member of the national Czech Cooking team. The menu provides an assortment of dishes, ranging from breakfast options: bagels, croissants, eggs, oatmeal, muesli ( 65kc – 145kc) to daily offerings: soups, salads, pasta, burgers (85kc – 375kc). There are also vegetarian and vegan options, as well as kid-friendly portions for pancakes and tortillas. Cakes prepared by dessert chef Ilona Tunkova include options such as cheesecakes and traditional lemon and honey cakes. We recommend the Lemon Cake (45kc) which has a flaky crust, thick lemon cream filling, toasted marshmallow topping, with sugared lemon cubes. Great for: Business Meet-ups, evening drinks, getting away from the studentheavy cafes.
Located on a corner in Zizkov, the small vintage styled café Zizkavarna offers a relaxing atmosphere that is great for destressing. The windows are lined with bench seating, perfect for curling up with a book from the bookshelves or to just sit and people watch. If the weather is nice, the outdoor seating would also be a great option– if you’re lucky one of their 3 tables will be open! During the week, the breakfast starts at 7:30am,weekends at 8:30am and lasts until 2:00pm. Even if you like a lie-in, you can still make it in time for the breakfast menu. All the options on the breakfast and brunch menu are under 100kc, with the exception of the Breakfast Burrito. Packed with eggs, beans, cheese, tomatoes, and ham, the burrito is still only 109kc. The remaining menu options start with Muesli (45kc) and work upwards in pricing: sandwiches (65kc), filled bagels (89kc), and an assortment of omelets (79-99kc). Since the café is small – it can fill up quickly, and they don’t take reservations, so be prepared for a possible wait or order s sebou (take
away). The tables are all 2 seaters, with the exception of 2 of the tables, which seat 4 people. The café is perfect for a party of 1 or 2, a convenient place to settle in for a while. However, if you come in a larger group, note that you might have to try to squeeze in to fit into a smaller table. The coffee is from the oldest fair roaster in Central Europe – Mama Coffee. Drinks are relatively affordablethe Americano is only 58kc. Once you order your drink of choice at the counter, go and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere while you wait. Overall, Zizkavarna is a great spot to visit and comfortable enough to stay for a while whether it is doing work on your laptop, or just relaxing by the windows and enjoying the weather. Great for: lazy days, solo visitors, people watching, not breaking the bank.

Manifesto market opens a Smichov pop-up location for the Summer. 19/7-21/7: Opening Weekend: Music and Beer pouring 24/7: Ahoy SmĂchov Grand Opening Party: 420PEOPLE and DJ Pierre Urban

PRAGUE RESIDENT | July 2019
By Natalie Hon Imagine walking down the street and you lay eyes upon a deserted square filled with dust, waste, and garbage. The space does not look particularly inviting, definitely somewhere you would not usually want to walk past. Now imagine walking past that same area, filled with vendors selling an assortment of food, the space brimming with visitors and a relaxed but vibrant atmosphere. That changed scenery is what Manifesto seeks to achieve with their projects. Manifesto believes in revitalizing areas in Prague that were previously desolate and empty by introducing marketspaces that provide high quality dishes and fun cultural events. The orginal Manifesto Market is located in Na Florenci, and the project has been praised by innumerous news outlets for its creativity and impact on the community and larger city alike. New York Times lauded Manifesto Market’s ability to “push for the innovative use of Prague’s cityscape while Stimulating the senses.” The invigorating energy and community that Manifesto has introduced to Prague cannot be understated as Lonely Planet, E15, and Denik have all commended Manifesto’s astronomical influence. Manifesto Florenc alone has introduced 180+ jobs and created a community with over 6 million users with the help of social networks. The market is also a great place for incubating new restaurants and testing out adventurous concepts as six restaurants now have brick and mortar locations after their involvement with Manifesto. Martin Barry, the creative driving force behind Manifesto, states that he wants Manifesto to be “enjoyable, inspiring, memorable, and surprising”, which are sentiments visitors share amongst each other after a trip to Manifesto Florenc. Barry aims to establish several new locations in the Manifesto chain by 2020. He will be starting with Manifesto Smichov, the second market, that is located in the unused yard of the Národní dům
communal building. This pop up will not be as long lasting as its Na Florenci sibling as it is geared more towards a summery atmosphere, so clear up your schedule to visit this gastronomical paradise before it relocates. The market, located on Namesti 14 Rijna square, will be easy to reach for anyone who wishes to enjoy all that Manifesto Smichov will offer. The market will be a few steps from Anděl transit, Nový Smíchov shopping mall, and is a 3-minute tram ride from Mala Strana’s Ujezd. Aside from enjoying this market, it is also walking distance from the river and Dancing House so you can enjoy both the food as well as the Prague cityscape. One of the most unique and technologically advanced features of Manifesto is their cashless policy. Manifesto will be launching two new important features that you should be on the lookout for during your visit. One is a Manifesto prepaid card, that will standardize the payment method and make it easier for customers and vendors alike to complete transactions. The other is a food delivery option through the application Wolt; Now you can order from all vendors with a single order. As one of Manifesto’s main missions is to beautify a previously desolate and avoided space, the market will feature a green labyrinth designed by the celebrated Czech architectural duo Chybik + Kristof. The ingenious duo seek to revive the historical layers of the building by taking advantage of the greenery and focus on the water installation to reflect the temporality of this pop up. Chybik states they want to create a summer oasis in the city that reflects 19th century façade, juxtaposed with the contemporary additions. Manifesto has collaborated with David Karasek’s design studio, mmcité, in the past and will continue this relationship through the introduction of Karasek’s new picnic benches named rauster. However, there will also be lounge chairs by the water feature to diversify the seating options along with a walkable deck. Enjoy this wonderous scenery with the various gourmet food options Manifesto
provides through their collaboration with both acclaimed fine dining options and delicious local dishes. Manifesto Smichov will be curating a Czech beer culture by combining Pilsner Urquell, a large traditional brewer with local microbrews. Pilsner Urqell will be hosting trainings and DIY experiences on pouring a perfect draught beer with celebrity bartenders joining these special events. The famous Pilsner Urquell beer will be a key feature, with an array of international bar foods on standby to provide the perfect beer tasting experience. But the gastronomical wonders don’t just end there. Manifesto Smichov will be collaborating with experts such as Zatisi Group and Sasazu to astound your taste buds, while also inviting you to enjoy some of the best dining options from Manifesto Florenc that will also be available at Smichov. There will also be a new pop-up kitchen by the pan-Asian restaurant as well as Prague’s hidden gem Nebu. However, Manifesto Market is more than just a food bazaar. Much like how Manifesto Na Florenci has organized over 200 free cultural performances and programs, Manifesto Smichov strives to provide the same high quality entertainment. Manifesto Smichov will be collaborating with Red Bull to provide the space with music and culture. There will not only be DJs, live musicians, and free concerts brought to you by the masterminds behind the legendary Rock for People festival, but also free film screenings. Manifesto Na Florenci is truly a sight to be beheld and an experience to be had, and Manifesto Smichov will surely not disappoint with their various new features that is unique to the second location. Whether you want to enjoy a quick Michelin quality meal or appreciate the beautified space, Manifesto Smichov is a mustsee location for residents and visitors alike. Colours of Ostrava
By Riley Keefe With Summer here and the warm weather settled in, the Czech Republic’s Music Festivals are ready to rock the stage once more. This year’s line up at Colours of Ostrava features world renowned artists like Florence and the Machine, The Cure, Rag ‘N’ Bone, and many more. Taking place at an old steel mill turned culture center from July 17th-20th, Colours of Ostrava is set for its annual debut. Founded in 2002, Colours of Ostrava hosts its festival against the backdrop of metallurgical works, mines, and ironworks. Prior to this location, the festival took place at the Silesian Ostrava Castle entertainment district, the eastern most point of the Czech Republic. However, this area became too small as attendance numbers steadily grew over the years with bigger names headlining the festival. The town of Ostrava reflects the technological advancements that would fuel the modern-day country we know today. Think of it as the Pittsburgh of the Czech Republic, producing coal, steel, and iron. Despite the rich history of industrial advancement, Ostrava made room for color, birthing the biggest music festival the country hosts today. Past shows have featured Led Zeppelin, lead singer and songwriter Robert Plant, EDM master Tame Impala, and many more which led to their first sold out festival in 2017. It was also in this year that the festival became more diverse in terms of genres and selection. “In 2017 we had quite a big jump in headliners. In terms of diversity it steadily grew”, says Juri Sedlak, PR manager for Colours of Ostrava Festival. Diversity became a source of inspiration in the coming years as stand-up comedy, theatre, workshops, and various other performances began taking the stage at Ostrava. “We have ten new
stages with discussions, workshops, for family and children. We have theatre as well.” A Music festival (despite the name) doesn’t have to be limited to just music, but rather a celebration of arts in its entirety. This is what Colours of Ostrava does best; unpack all there is to offer in artistic expression through music, poetry, theatre, and workshops for everyone to enjoy. In the past, the festival has headlined an eclectic grouping of artists from various genres. This not only diversifies the variety of music but also attracts a much bigger crowd. Even selections of jazz and classical have made an appearance at the festival. “Our big advantage is that we have a wide variety of people in terms of age.” says Sedlak. Just look at the lineup for this year alone; The Cure and Florence and The Machine. The former found success played across rock radio stations in the 80’s endlessly while the other arrived on streamed platforms like Spotify. In terms of reach, Colours of Ostrava has garnered a balanced crowd. Balanced crowd, though, means showcasing bands that aren’t as well-known as others. Local bands strive for success and aim at music festivals as the best method of exposure next to social media. “We try to support local and smaller bands and make sure they get a chance on stage.” Commercial success via music festivals can lead to fame; just look at Glastonbury and Reading headliners like Muse. “This is at the core of the Colours of Ostrava experience, ‘I didn’t know this band before, but now I do.’” Colours of Ostrava is one of the most diverse music festivals in all of Europe, showcasing a number of artists whose respective genres make for a weekend of musical, theatre and stand-up fun. Biggest piece of advice? “Not to sound too generalized, but just have an open mind.”

The long life of Roxy
For nearly a century, the Dlouha street venue has been a part of Prague By Riley Keefe Like the Czech Republic itself, Prague’s Roxy nightclub has led many lives since its opening in 1927. A renowned sense of freedom has given life into venues like this since the fall of the Communist regime in 1989. Since then, this nightclub, art hall, and concert venue has become the embodiment of Prague’s wild 90’s night scene that continues to thrive today. Originally opened as a cinema that was notable amongst Prague’s elite back in 1927, the venue fell quiet as nightlife during World War II was scarce. Not helped by being in a then primarily Jewish-neighborhood, the building was essentially abandoned after the war, until it found use as a film school during the tenure of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Over the years, the building fell into disrepair, and in 1989 after the fall of the Communist regime, it was set for demolishment due to structural damage. However, thanks a grant from the Linhart Foundation (which supports the arts), the building was saved and turned into an unground concert venue. Roxy would face a series of continued issues, with the flood of 2002 temporarily shuttering the club down and noise complaints from neighboring buildings as well as the mayor of Prague. But, since 1927 the loyalty and hope had kept Roxy alive, with its roots dug deep and having bear witness to some of the worst atrocities the Czech Republic has endured. In addition to being one of the hottest clubs in Prague, Roxy ventured into the arts, with
their experimental space for exhibitions as well as Café Nod, both venues promoting local and international art. Every six months the venue hosts its very own Roxy Visuals; a showcase of visually demanding pieces from artists in and around the Czech Republic. Combining this with the nightclub atmosphere makes for one of the most unique experiences you can immerse yourself in with friends. Versatile to say the least, as these shows highlight the skill and craft of highly talented artists. Previous shows have included one of the original artists to emerge from the Czech contemporary art scene: Pasta Oner. Roxy isn’t just any other club serving fancy drinks and playing music everyone can sing along to; it’s more than that. Its dynamic art gallery is the first of many layers that separate Roxy from the rest. The consistent and adamant level of loyalty as well as the exclusivity that comes with their art exhibitions and rooftop parties makes Roxy exceptional. People have been coming here for years, not just for the night life, but also for the historical significance attached to the building and name. “You can feel the history and vibe from all those years behind. That's why we try to keep the venue as it is, of course respectively to current highest technical and visual standards,” says Daniel Bacho, PR and communications manager of Roxy. The feeling of exclusivity make everyone feel like VIP guests attending the coolest rooftop party in Prague. Thanks to the Linhart Foundation that saved the building from demolition in 1992, Roxy has made every event feel like its last. Loyalty isn’t just limited to repeating club goers
and shuffle of art curators, it’s essentially part of their mission statement that the staff promote every day. Their defiance to adhere to mainstream pop culture demands allows them to invest in new and upcoming artists and genres. Sure, it’s a gamble but it’s met with a positive response from concert goers looking for new musical exposure. A rebellious attitude like this isn’t uncommon in Prague, as clubs like Roxy would have faced suppression during the communist regime. Think of it as the John Lennon Wall of nightlife. Roxy has continued to embody this contemporary attitude with every piece of art and band they showcase. The unique use of space combined with a welcoming atmosphere makes Roxy one of the most well respected and visited clubs in Prague. Its history and following has created an identity that has become synonymous with icons like the Charles Bridge and Vyšehrad. Look beyond the carefully decorated walls and the giant bone dangling from the ceiling (Yes, you read that correctly) for the authenticity imbued into the walls, nearly 100 years in the making. What awaits you in the galleries that dominate the upper and lower sectors of this venue will leave you starstruck. “The most important thing is the positive emotion people leave the club with. You have to feel welcomed and wanted and that's what we try to achieve. Of course, we want to entertain people and bring cutting edge performances, but what stays in people's minds and emotions. That's what we focus on.” July 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

(Political Prisoners) street. The neoclassicist building to the right is Petschkův palác (Petschek Palace). The palace was designed by architect Max Spielmann for merchant banker Julius Petschek in the 1920s and was one of the most modern buildings in Prague at the time. The space is most known, however, as the headquarters of the Gestapo during WWII. Many interrogations and torturings of the Czech Resistance happened here. At the end of the street you'll find the beautiful Prague State Opera building (Státní opera),
previously known as Smetana Theatre after famed Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. Opened in 1888, the opera hosted renowned composers and singers, such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Enrico Caruso. The opera is now part of the National Theatre and holds opera and ballet productions in the breathtaking performance hall. Turn to the right and you’ll end up at the newly renovated National Museum overlooking Prague’s vibrant Wenceslas Square.
