Hello, Spring! As nature’s gearing up to bloom new life into the world this spring, so is Prague welcoming new cafés, clubs and restaurants. Our friends at WingHaus are set to open a beautifully massive sports bar in Žižkov at the end of the month (seriously, this place is going to be a labyrinth of fun, and amazing wings of course). And Moon Club has already begun making a name for itself in the midst of Dlouha’s party scene with its classy courtyard glass ceiling providing drinks under the stars. There’s also a new English-friendly Jára Cimrman play, The Act. Premiering on the 29th, this play featuring tales of the most famous Czech that never

existed, a beloved icon in Czech culture, is only the fourth to be translated into English. The Cimrman English Theatre only does a couple performances each month and they often sell out, so get your tickets early! If you’re just moving here it won’t take long before someone recommends Las Adelitas for amazingly authentic Mexican cuisine. Having just opened their fourth location near Náměstí Republiky, it’s hard to imagine this group of friends started by making and selling tacos out of their apartment. Likewise, Frankie of Le Pizze di Frankie serves up some of the best Neapolitan pizza from his apartment during

Mas Las Adelitas!
Local Mexican restaurant expands to their fourth location
When a group of Mexican friends began cooking their home cuisine in a small Prague apartment and delivering it throughout the city nine years ago, they were fueled by a craving for their native tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. What they didn’t realize was how much Czechs were craving it, too. A decade later, the group that once took orders through Hotmail has become Las Adelitas, one of the most successful and authentic Mexican restaurants in Prague. “From the day we opened, we’ve never stopped having people,” says Marketing and Brand Director David Zamorano, who grew up in Mexico City. A taste off the menu, and it’s easy to understand why. Each of the chain’s four locations serves everything from steaming enchiladas drowned in the spicy-sweetness of mole sauce to soft corn tortillas stuffed with sauteed prickly pear cactus or juicy beef flank and fresh pico de gallo. The flautas, or crisp-fried small tacos, are another crowd favorite, each smothered in just enough tart sour cream and chunky guacamole to offset the tortilla crunch. That’s not to mention the extensive margaritas menu, which offers the classic drink on the rocks or frozen in dozens (yes, dozens) of combinations, each with delicate presentation. If you go for the frozen option, don’t be surprised when your drink resembles more of an overflowing ice cream cone
complete with fruit toppings than an alcoholic beverage. It’s a far cry from the city’s often bland interpretation of Mexican cuisine into soggy tortilla chips, mushy black beans and heaps of string cheese, sometimes referred to as “Czech-Mex.” “Throughout the nine years, we’ve learned a lot,” Zamorano continues. “We’ve always tried to improve ourselves and our recipes, and we’ve always worked to separate ourselves as authentic.” In fact, everything about the restaurants scream authenticity—from the handmade “Talavera” tile imported from Mexico to the maracas-loaded music and the artwork on the walls. Although the group found themselves in Prague for different reasons - from coming here to study film to falling in love with the city after visiting a friend - this desire to authentically share their home culture brought them together. The friends have big dreams for their restaurant, which is named for Mexican folk song, “La Adelita,” which praises female military members of the Mexican Revolution. Recently, they’ve opened a brand new restaurant in New Town, conveniently located just a couple blocks from Náměstí Republiky and sharing the same vibrant Mexican culture as their other locations. The passion the group has is palpable not only
in the beautiful dishes they create, but also in where you can find them - their restaurants. The friends consider Las Adelitas their family and second home. “Las Adelitas is like my child,” says Executive Chef Rodrigo Flores. Flores spends his time preparing delicious meals at the Malé náměstí (Old Town Square) location and serving food at the many street festivals they take part in. Pop into any of the restaurants at lunch and you’ll likely find Zamorano, Flores, Director of Operations Patricio Ibargüengoitia and Director of Administration and Management Fernando Larios enjoying the dishes they’ve created. Don’t forget about their weekly specials! Wednesday nights are Ladies Night with 89Kč margaritas while Fridays bring Agave Night with specials on Tequila and margaritas. Plus, there’s happy hour every day from 3-6PM. Check out Las Adelitas at any one of their four locations: Vinohrady (orIginal) : Americká 8, Prague 2 Vinohrady: Lucemburská 6, Prague 3 Old Town: Malé náměstí 13, Prague 1 New Town: Petrská 23, Prague 1 March 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

At home with Le Pizze di Frankie
AC/DC blasting, origami swans hanging from the window, magazine cutouts of Sylvester Stallone and pin-up models covering the kitchen walls - it's probably not what you picture of a typical Italian restaurant, but this vibrant scene is home to one of the best pizzas in Prague, Le Pizze di Frankie. Francesco Gallucci, a.k.a. Frankie, runs this Neapolitan pizza haven out of his flat near Karlovo náměstí. Hosting Half Day Take Aways a couple nights a week, customers message him on Facebook and set up a time to pick up their pizza. While some simply pick up their pizza and head home for a delicious dinner, many end up eating their pizza there - the casual, lively atmosphere is enticing. People eat propped up in chairs around the room and crowded around the definitely-not big-enough kitchen table. No one seems to mind though, they’re too busy enjoying one of the nine pizzas Frankie offers. “The power of food,” says Frankie. “It is like an injection of magic.” From the classic Margherita and Salame Calabrese to Frankie’s favorite, the aptly named “Frankie,” featuring melt-in-your-mouth tuna, gorgonzola, cherry tomatoes, onion and mozzarella. The pizzas are in the Neapolitan style from the Italian city of Naples. “The slice has to bend, it has to be soft,” explains Frankie. “The edge has to have air, not flat - fluffy and empty.” Customers must order their pizza the day before since the dough needs 24 hours to prepare.
Once you arrive you’ll find a small, circular, portable oven settled on the counter. It may not look like much, but this modified oven is one of the main ingredients to making amazing Neapolitan pizza Frankie has been working on a new prototype for over a year now. “The secret of the pizza is a secret,” laughs Frankie. “It’s a secret, like in the show MacGyver, you don’t need to know!” Dressed in a grungy cut-off black leather vest with a collared t-shirt underneath and plastic wrapped around his biceps covering fresh tattoos from earlier today, Frankie is a whirlwind of focused energy. He constantly opens the oven to rotate the pizzas, then turns around to ask “Everything good? Anyone need water?” then whirls back around to spread sauce on another ball of dough, only to start discussing the intricacies of the doughmaking process with one of the customers, all while periodically yelling “just say fourth floor and open with the red button please!” as someone answers the ringing doorbell for him. Frankie serves about twenty people throughout the night, regulars and newcomers alike, greeting everyone with the typical Italian “ciao” paired with a “dobrý den.” Waiting to make the pizzas until the customer arrives for ultimate freshness, he is ready and prepared. He checks the notebook of names and orders nestled on a cabinet handle above his working space and starts the person’s request before they even make it up the stairs. “I am very precise,” says Frankie. “So there is no
overlapping and people don’t have to wait a long time.” Most people don’t mind a wait though. Frankie chats with everyone, asking how they’re doing and if they’ve had his pizza before. He even takes a moment to introduce us to the drummer of Czech band Mandrage, who quietly strolls in for a pizza (AC/DC ended up getting replaced with a crash course in Mandrage after this). Although he was destined to be a pizza connoisseur, this was not Frankie’s original plan. He actually studied law and worked in marketing after graduating from school, ending up in Prague for an internship-turned-job almost a decade ago. Flash forward five years and Frankie is making pizzas as a hobby for himself and friends, branching out to street festivals just a year later. A year after that, in 2016, he quit his corporate job and devoted himself to providing Prague with authentic pizza from his home country. On top of Half Day Take Aways, Frankie and a few friends still work the street festivals, but his main bread and butter is catering weddings and other events. This month, he’s representing the flour company, Polselli, in tastings and competitions in America, at the Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. Although he sees perhaps opening an actual restaurant somewhere in his future, for now he’s content to perfect his portable oven creations and host these casual Take Away nights. Lake Malawi One of the unspoken rules of being an expat is that you have to support - or at least know - the Eurovision band representing your now-home country. If somehow you've not heard of the Eurovision Song Contest (that would be you, non-Europeans), you definitely know some of its success stories. From Celine Dion, ABBA and Julio Iglesias to Domenico Mudugno's song “Nel blu dipinto di blu,” or “Volare,” talented artists have found fame through the olympics of song performances. For over sixty years, the competition annually features singers and songwriters from across Europe (and Australia). The competitors go through many rounds to finally reach the televised semi-finals. Some countries have an open vote for the public to decide who will represent them, while others elect a panel or jury to do the choosing. Instead of the focus remaining on the artist, the competition is more about the song and the message it shares since artists submit and perform only that one song. Only a participant since 2007, the Czech Republic does not have a long history in the competition, succeeding in qualifying only two out of seven times. Last year saw the country’s best success and first time in the top ten with Mikolas Josef’s song, “Lie to Me.” This year, we welcome the band Lake Malawi and their song “Friend of a Friend” to represent the Czech Republic in Tel Aviv. Elected partially by a public vote and partially by an international jury of previous Eurovision competitors, “Friend of a Friend” is about - you guessed it - friendship. The song explores how you can reach out to friends and then friends of friends and so on, potentially connecting with anyone in the world. It also touches on the importance of friendships that get left behind. “It's about people you tend to forget who may
have introduced you to the love of your life or may have said something that changed your life,” says Černý. “You may not be in touch with them directly now, but they were pretty important for you at a certain time in the past. So speaking of ‘she's only a friend of a friend,’ except for it being just an excuse, it's also a way of saying thanks to all my friends of friends I no longer see anymore.” Just six years old, the indie-pop band Lake Malawi consists of lead singer and guitarist Albert Černý, Jeroným Šubrt on bass, and Antonín Hrabal on drums. Černý wrote “Friend of a Friend” with Jan Steinsdorfer and Mikolaj Trybulec at the Songwriting.cz camp, his first experience co-writing a song. “I hate the idea of songs being manufactured like in a factory,” says Černý. “To me all songwriting is a very personal thing, a journey to my heart - and it will always stay the same. What I hadn't realized though, is that you can invite other people to join you on that journey. That's what happened here.” Černý was so inspired by the song, his girlfriend suggested they enter Eurovision. “I kept playing the demo in the car over and over again and my girlfriend said to me: ‘This song is special. When was the last time you were that excited about something?’ says Černý. “And she was right. So we applied…” Lake Malawi, whose name was inspired by the Bon Iver song, “Calgary,” is an indie-pop band with “80s influences, nice melodies and a frontman who grew up listening to Peter Gabriel and Sting.” Černý is also known for his first band, Charlie Straight, for which he won an MTV award and six Angel and Czech Nightingale Awards, both similar to the American Grammys. Forming the band when he was only fifteen after hearing ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay, Černý knew what he wanted to do from
a young age. For the band, Eurovision is an opportunity for their music to be heard all over the world, hopefully leading to a wider fanbase and future tours. “The ultimate wish is to soundtrack people's lives,” says Černý. “That's when your music gets bigger than you - when it doesn't matter what you put on Instagram, 'cause someone just proposed to their girlfriend listening to your voice and it makes so much sense to them in their lives, it's not in your hands anymore and that's beautiful.” On top of the massive international audience that awaits them, the band is looking forward to appreciating Israeli food and culture in Tel Aviv, where the competition is being held this year. “I don't know what to expect from the competition itself, competing in music is a strange idea,” says Černý. “Some people like a certain style and vocal expression, some don't. I like genuine artists like Bon Iver, James Blake or Phoebe Bridgers, but I also love some Ariana Grande tunes or Kendrick Lamar... I look forward to meeting new people at Eurovision and broadening my horizons and getting rid of old prejudices - opening my mind and seeing new possibilities in music and my dreams in music.” Besides shooting for a Eurovision victory, Lake Malawi has plans to release a new music video for “Friend of a Friend” and a new single sometime in the near future. “Music is a way of living,” says Černý. “To me, it’s like breathing.” Watch Lake Malawi perform in the semi-finals starting on May 14th at eurovision.tv and check out the band at lakemalawimusic.com and on Instagram at @lakemalawimusic. 55-year-old man in what appeared to be a dispute over the ownership of a shopping bag full of yogurts. Also in the second city, Blesk reported on Egyptian expat “Mustafa F. I. E.”, who faces up to 20 years in prison for allegedly plotting to kill his exgirlfriend and her new lover with an explosive belt. Bizarrely, three years ago the man was a contestant on talent show Česko Slovensko má talent (the Czech edition of Got Talent), delighting judge Lucie Bílá, who took part in his death-defying fakir act. “You’re likeable and you have a charming smile,” the singer told him afterward. “I knew that I was safe.”
Hollywood Ending
The quality of Polish groceries has been a Czech media obsession for years, and last month the tabloids had more than usual to chew on. A Polish TV report alleging that an abattoir in the northeast of the country had been handling sick cows has led to increased scrutiny of imported Polish beef across Europe, particularly the Czech Republic. Agriculture Minister Miroslav Toman made headlines on February 6 when he told a parliamentary committee that Prague restaurants had been passing off Polish beef as “Argentinean steaks”. Without naming names, Toman referred to a specific “high-end restaurant” that sold suspect meat for “a thousand crowns a portion”. As if setting a riddle, the minister added that the establishment in question had an Asian-sounding name but wasn’t Chinese. But at a press conference later the same day, Toman named the decidedly non-Asian-sounding U Moťáka in Prague 8-Karlín as one of the restaurants mislabeling Polish beef. The restaurant has angrily denied the minister’s claim, and told reporters from public broadcaster Český rozhlas that they plan to sue. Toman, whose father was a Communist-era Agriculture Minister, struck again on February 20, announcing that veterinary inspectors had found 700 kilos of Polish beef containing salmonella at Frost Logistics’ facility in Psáry, Central Bohemia, a few kilometers south of Prague. The Czech Republic immediately announced plans to test all imported
Polish meat and, at time of writing, an all-out ban was under consideration. In retaliation, Polish Agriculture Minister Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski angrily threatened to start testing all Czech beer exported to his country, though presumably not by drinking it.
Bad Seed Beef wasn’t the only food to come into question in recent weeks. The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority’s (SZPI’s) official Potraviny na pranýři (Food Pillory) website recently reported that Prague 6’s Sklizeno Dejvice store had been found to be selling poppy seed “containing morphine in quantities that can no longer be considered safe.” The bad news for readers looking to ease their pain is that the suspect seeds were removed from sale several months earlier. Courtesy TV Prima

Singer/actress Lucie Vondráčková, whose messy divorce from ice hockey star Tomáš Plekanec has preoccupied the Czech tabloids for months, was drawn into an unlikely scandal. Vondráčková made her English-language film debut in a movie called The Perfect Kiss last year and is now probably wishing she hadn’t. The romantic comedy, described by Los Angeles Times reviewer Kevin Crust as “so bad it’s … no, not good, just terrible,” appeared to have disappeared without a trace. That was until Moviezone.cz discovered that the film’s distributor had been contacting users of film site ČSFD.cz, effectively to accuse them of posting fake reviews. To add to the intrigue, it emerged that the president of 7 Art Distribution, the company responsible for the vaguely threatening messages, was Markéta Adamcová (aka Tina Adams), writer and director of The Perfect Kiss. Strangely, this underhand tactic doesn’t seem to have worked and, at time of writing, The Perfect Kiss rated a mere 11% on ČSFD.cz and just 3.4 out of 10 on iMDB. Finally, local Plzeň newspaper Plzeňský deník reported on an unexpected delivery at one of the city’s downtown bars: a baby. According to the paper, a heavily pregnant woman went into labor after stopping for a lemonade at the Jekyll & Hyde bar, and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. In a nice touch, the birth was assisted by two off-duty nurses, who were celebrating their friend’s bachelorette party at the pub. “To the boy who was born, I would like to say that in 18 years he has a free beer at our bar,” Jekyll & Hyde’s barman told the Plzeňský deník reporter. And if you're looking to go full Cuban, it happens to be located underneath Cohiba Atmosphere cigar bar. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.

Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1
levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman film of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
L’Fleur
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1
lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations

Schody Home Bar
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1
Recently opened bespoke cocktail bar and sister to one of our favorite cocktail places, Parlour. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret right on the steps leading up to the Prague Castle.
Tretter’s
V kolkovně 3, Prague 1
tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations.
Malkovich
Bar Martinez
With wallpaper that looks like your grandmother’s sofa, Malkovich is a comfy Bohemian paradise and beloved by locals. Just a few doors down from Bukowski’s, come for good music, signature cocktails and arguably the best Long Island you’ll ever taste. +420 721 311 021 for Reservations.
martinezbar.cz Original cocktails mixed with the freshest ingredients, paired with amazing Dim-Sum and other Asian specialties. Although the bar is underground the atmosphere is sleek and open, with an atrium skylight and giant palm trees. +420 702 123 040 for Reservations.

Meet Pat Peoples. Pat has a theory: his life is a movie produced by God. And his God-given mission is to become physically fit and emotionally literate, whereupon God will ensure him a happy ending--the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. (It might not come as a surprise to learn that Pat has spent several years in a mental health facility.) The problem is, Pat's now home, and everything feels off. No one will talk to him about Nikki; his beloved Philadelphia Eagles keep losing; he's being pursued by the deeply odd Tiffany; his new therapist seems to recommend adultery as a form of therapy. Plus, he's being haunted by Kenny G!

The Act
Cimrman English Theatre premieres original Cimrman play
In the past few years a group of inspired Englishspeaking actors have brought the beloved cultural icon, Jára Cimrman, to a non-Czech audience for the first time in his fifty year existence. This month they’re premiering their fourth translation, the original Cimrman play, The Act (Akt). “It’s absurd. The whole premise of it is just…” says Director Michael Pitthan as he shakes his head and laughs. “It’s all based on an absurd twist. It’s like kitchen sink drama, but with the weirdest story behind it.” The Act is a “farcical take on traditional family dramas” focusing on an artist and his wife and muse who are hosting a dinner party for three guests - a sexologist, a businessman, and a teacher. Throughout the hilarious evening you learn the connection the guests have to each other and their hosts. “There is a feeling that we’re going back to the beginning which is quite cool,” says Pitthan. “I don’t know how many more translations there can be, so it’s exciting for me that we’re going back to the start.” The Cimrman English Theatre (CET) came
to be just five years ago after Emília Machalová shared the Cimrman plays with British playwright and actor Brian Stewart as a way of helping him understand Czech culture. Inspired by the humor, Stewart, along with Machalová, decided to attempt the difficult task of translating a Cimrman play. After receiving approval from Cimrman co-creator Zdeněk Svěrák, they devoted over a year and a half to translating The Stand-In (Záskok) and tested their efforts in a reading to a live audience. To their relief, the audience was hooked, Svěrák approved and with support from the original Cimrman Theatre the Cimrman English Theatre was born. CET consists of six actors hailing from the U.S., Britain and Australia: Pitthan, Stewart (also known as Ben Bradshaw), Adam Stewart, Brian Caspe, Peter Hosking and Curt Matthew. Most of the company knew each other from other theater groups and events in Prague. They put on one show a month at the Jára Cimrman Theatre, rotating between The Stand-In, The Pub in the Glade (Hospoda Na mýtince), Conquest of the North Pole (Dobytí severního pólu) and now The Act. Cimrman plays are divided into two parts.
The first act is always given in a deadpan lecturestyle format, with explanations and insight of Cimrman’s work presented by experts deemed “Cimrmanologists.” Of course, it doesn’t take too much to recognize this as a classic comedy set-up, preparing the viewer for the absurdity which lies ahead. The second half of the play is the work itself - and always an adventure into the unexpected. It’s no mystery why it’s taken so long for Cimrman to find a foreign audience. With productions full of wordplay, double meanings and clever references, even those who study Czech for years find it hard to understand the sharp wit and linguistic nuances of the scripts. CET keeps their translations as close as possible to the originals, but the intricacies of the jokes make them incredibly difficult to adapt to other languages. “If you go for a literal translation it won’t make sense,” says Pitthan. “The humor is intellectual and poetic in the original. You can’t just say this joke works in Czech so it will work in English, you have to figure out an equivalent in English that makes March 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT
31
sense.” Svěrák leaves much of the translation approval to his daughter, Hanka Jelínková – Svěráková, who helped Brian and Dagmar Caspe translate The Act. “Even in rehearsals right now we’re still discussing the jokes,” says Pitthan. “Sometimes we don’t come to a resolution and we just have to wait and see - maybe there will be a laugh or maybe not.” While some of the humor is universal, CET often has to add context for non-Czechs to be able to understand the jokes. Sometimes new jokes even make it into the English translations. “Unfortunately some of the plays won’t be translatable because the jokes are so down to local references, local people and Czech history,” says Pitthan. “But it’s interesting and exciting to see the jokes that are original additions, the jokes that maybe wouldn’t work in Czech but we’re lucky they work in English.” Jára Cimrman represents Czech humor at its finest and epitomizes the quintessential Czech, often characterized as an underdog or unrecognized genius. Birthed out of the communist era when you couldn’t freely say what you thought, the humor is a bit dark, a bit self-deprecating and fully hilarious. In American and British terms, Cimrman has drawn comparisons to Forrest Gump and the dry absurdity of Monty Python. The plays’ intellectual jokes and blurred lines between reality and history may take you a moment to understand. “I think this is indicative of the fact that Czechs are well-read and they will work out the joke,” says Pitthan. “Svěrák always tells us to ‘slow down, boys,’ that the laugh is there we just have to give the audience a moment. We’re learning that, to slow down.”
The nature of the plays means not every member of CET can act in every show. Since all the members are multi-talented and experienced they take turns directing, with The Act marking Pitthan’s first time at the helm. “Besides not ruining a Czech treasure, we’re basically following the Cimrman model, not coming up with anything too new,” says Pitthan. “I’m of the approach that sometimes directors interfere too much.” Cimrman plays are put on by so-called “nonactors” whose performances involve incredibly flat humor that doesn’t always have the same hilarious effect for non-Czech audiences. CET members often have to act the parts a little more than their Czech counterparts do for the jokes to really hit home. “[The Act] is maybe not the easiest play for a non-Czech crowd to digest since it’s not as polished for theater,” says Pitthan. “So I’m steering the guys to come up with well-rounded, solid characters.” Compared to the previous three plays the company has put on, The Act is special because you can see how the Cimrman humor evolved over the decades and what elements were there from the beginning. “What’s striking is the characters created and the type of comedy that Cimrman is, you can see here in its embryonic form,” says Pitthan. “It’s interesting to look at Záskok and see how it all came together after fifteen plays. How they brought them all together with different stories and context.” The Act stands out because Svěrák originally wrote it alone - he and Smoljak each wrote one play by themselves before collaborating on the other thirteen (although Smoljak did help write some of the lectures in The Act). The play also has the unique
position of being the first one, so there was less pressure involved. “The absurdist choices are quite brave in this one,” says Pitthan. “I think that probably comes from a place of creative freedom because they didn’t have any expectations.” Walking into the rustic Jára Cimrman Theatre nestled on a quiet street in Žižkov, it’s not hard to feel the legacy of this cultural icon that never actually existed. The corridors lined with black and white photographs capturing Cimrman’s over fifty year history are still full of people every month both the Czech and English Cimrman shows often sell out. The CET performances attract both expats and Czechs, and have enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive response from both cultures. In the future the company hopes to do more than one show a month, on top of putting on private performances for some of the international schools. They are also looking for sponsors and would love to go on tour again. “We’d all like to perform more,” says Pitthan. “We say this, and none of us say it cause it’s the thing you say, but we are all completely honored to bring this to a wider audience. Cimrman is such a huge cultural gem.” Catch The Cimrman English Theatre's performance of The Pub in the Glade on the 15th and the premiere of The Act on the 29th at Jára Cimrman Theatre, Štítného 5 Prague 3. Tickets for further performances are available until the end of the season in June. Reserve tickets online at zdjc.cz.
The Beginner's Guide to Jára Cimrman: In late 1966, in the small northern Czech town of Liptákov, a mysterious chest was discovered after being buried in the countryside for nearly a century. And by an incredible stroke of luck, this monumentally important moment in Czech history was captured and broadcast on live radio to Czechs across the country. As listeners sat fixated to their radios, researchers at the scene narrated a seemingly

endless discovery of manuscripts, documents and other artifacts in the found chest detailing the incredi-ble and almost unbelievable life and work of a man that history seemed to have forgotten: Jára Cimrman. Cimrman, it appeared, was a universal genius of any and all disciplines. He invented puppet shows in Paraguay, established schools of criminology, music and ballet in Vienna, assisted Marie Curie with stud-ies that won her two Nobel Prizes, wired Thomas Edison’s first lightbulb and accommodated Gustave Eiffel in Paris. He invented the telephone long before Alexander Graham Bell, who found he had three missed calls from Cimrman upon his first connection. Traveling Switzerland, Cimrman came only seven meters away from the North Pole, almost becoming the first human being to ever reach the top of planet Earth. It would be one of the tens of dozens of “near misses” that plagued Cimrman’s life of genius. It’s somewhat hard to believe that
until that fateful day in Liptákov, the world had forgotten Jára Cimrman—especially considering that Cimrman had even chronicled many of his accomplishments through hundreds of plays he
The only known likeness of Cimrman is this bust, which was lost and used to fit hats due to it's perfect size.
authored over his lifetime. But of course it should be hard to believe— none of it is true. Any of it. Not Jára Cimrman, his accom-plishments, nor the town of Liptákov itself. Nonetheless, the moments that played out through the radio on that cool winter evening in 1966 would launch the life of Jára Cimrman, and the career of its creators. Like many stories of conception, Cimrman was born one late night over a bottle of vodka. Writers Zdeněk Svěrák and the late Ladislav Smoljak were imagining “the perfect Czech,” one-upping each other with potential virtues, accomplishments and endeavors if such a man existed. By the end of the night, he did. Over the years that followed, the two writers would dream up many mys-tical and far-fetched tales of the unsung genius. From the beginning, Cimrman was a lighthearted poke at Czech’s ever-present struggle into world-relevance and extreme national pride. Now, what started as a parody has become one of the most prominent facets of Czech culture and humor. Following the success of the original radio show (“Nealkoholická Vinárna U Pavouka,” or “The Non-Alcoholic Wine Bar at the Spider”), Svěrák and Smoljak assembled the first Cimrman performance troupe in 1967, deeming themselves experts in the field of Cimrman— or “Cimrmanologists”, as they would become known. The motley cast of mostly backstage hands, lighting and curtain operators had little to no acting experience, which Svěrák and Smoljak found endearing. Alongside Svěrák and Smoljak , Jiří Šebánek, Miloň Čepelka and Karel Velebný, put on the first Cimrman show, “Akt,” at Malostranská Beseda in October 1967. It wasn’t long before the troupe established a company solely dedicated to the study and staging of Cimrman’s “newly discovered” plays, promptly named the Theatre of Jára Cimrman, located in Žižkov. The shows gained a mass of popularity and interest among Czechs that is in full force today— the compa-ny has put on nearly 260 shows per year since 1967. And while there have been a few changes in the cast (including the death of
Zdeněk Svěrák and the late Ladislav Smoljak invented Cimrman during a night of drinking. Smoljak in 2010), the shows normally sell out months in advance. For Svěrák and Smoljak, their professional passions were split neatly into two disciplines: film and thea-ter. One never trumped the other, considering the success of the Cimrman Theatre and projects like the Academy Award winning 1996 film Kolja, in which the duo starred, and Svěrák wrote the screenplay. And just how big has Cimrman become? Cimrman's significance was officially recognized in 2005, when he was voted “The Greatest Czech” in history through a program inspired by the BBC’s “100 Greatest Britons.” Ultimately, Cimrman was disqualified for the minor technicality of his lack of physical exist-ence. That hasn’t weakened proof of Cimrman’s existence, though. A previous exhibition in the basement of Petřín Lookout Tower showcased some of Cimrman’s greatest inventions, including a broom meant for corners, a bicycle designed for
firefighters and a necktie brush. While the Petrin exhibit is closed, the more adventurous can head to the Cimrman Museum in the North, located in Příchovice, south of the Jizera Mountains. Curious to experience the comedic genius of Cimrman but unable to speak Czech? The Cimrman shows were considered virtually untranslatable until English playwright and actor Brian Stewart tackled the idea, alongside Emilia Machalová and Svěrák’s daughter, Hanka Jelínková. Thus, the Cimrman English Theater was born. Stewart isn’t a comedy newcomer, having starred in the original British “The Office” with Ricky Gervais and penned the award-winning play “Castro’s Beard.” As some of the original cast members enter their eighties, the Cimrman phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. In the words of the great Jara Cimrman, “Life is the best school of life.”

The novel explores the madness of war as a concept and wonders if the only way to deal with such idiocy is to either be, or fake being, an idiot. Czech director Karel Steklý directed the film and shot almost entirely in Prague. You can see here how the historical Charles Bridge looked
over 60 years ago. If you recognize the name Švejk, that’s because it’s become a common name for cafés, restaurants and shops across the Czech Republic in honor of The Good Soldier himself. Turkish photographer Bektash Musa fell in love with Prague at first sight. A fan of media, Musa also wanted to show the world the beauty of the city through the eyes of directors who filmed here, pairing photos of actual places with scenes from movies, television shows, documentaries and music video where they were originally shot.
